Anthony Moss, 6-3, 215, OLB, Miami - 2nd team all-county after playing tight end...FSU coaches project him as an outside linebacker...an outstanding track athlete also as he was his school's MVP as a junior in that sport and as a senior recorded a 57-6 throw in the shot put...brother Winston plays for the University of Miami.
Chris Nicolas, 6-2, 220, LB, Clearwater - Played in only seven games as a senior since he was sidelined after suffering a cracked sternum in an automobile accident...still, he earned 2nd team class 5A all-state honors as well as first team all-Suncoast...will play in the Florida-Georgia all-star game...brother Scott played linebacker for the Miami Hurricanes and is now with the Cleveland Browns...good student, with a GPA above 3.0.
Bill Ragans, 6-3, 188, DB, Live Oak - Hails from just an hour east of Tallahassee...2nd team all-state on the 3A level at strong safety...considered a hard-hitting safety somewhat in the mold of FSU's Stan Shiver...recruited by smaller schools, the Seminoles are counting him as a sleeper.

Scott Schilbrack, 6-9, 255, DT, Lauderhill - The tallest player ever under Bowden at FSU...did not make any of the all-state lists but was a late selection to most school's recruiting lists...is strong (360 bench press) and runs a 5.1 40 yards...could be a sleeper for the Seminoles.
Lamar Williams, 6-2, 280, DL, Pensacola - Led his team to the state championship in football two years in a row and joins teammate Reggie Johnson at FSU...a member of the Florida Super 24 team and a USA Today honorable mention All-American...has won the state heavyweight weightlifting championship the last two years...won this year with a 425 lb. bench press...also throws the shot put and discus...will certainly get a look at noseguard at FSU.

FSU blanks Toledo 24-0 in opener.
TALLAHASSEE, FL – Clinging tenaciously to the shirttails of it defense, Florida State hung on and settled for a 24-0 victory over Toledo here Saturday night.
It was not pretty on this wet Campbell Stadium evening as the Seminoles committed six turnovers.
Still, it was not really close as the crowd of 53,891 saw the Seminoles carve out a 17-0 halftime lead.
With FSU errors, Toledo was in Seminole territory much of the evening – consecutively penetrating to the 13, 25, 48, 29, 44, 30, 29 and 38.
But a tough defense granted nothing.
For Coach Bobby Bowden, it was his 10th consecutive first-game victory at sites ranging from Syracuse to LSU.
In a steady rain, Toledo got the good start in this one.
Renza Hughie tucked in an opening kickoff at his 5 and sped 41 yards to his 46 before Derek Schmidt, the kicker, tackled him.
Two passes were futile, and a run got little. Toledo’s first punt stopped at the FSU 19.
Tanner Holloman got 21 out of an opening Chip Ferguson pass. Third down at the 48, and Victor Floyd fumbled on FSU’s first run of the game. Dexter Clark covered it for the Rockets at the 49.
An 18-yard pass, Bill Bergan to Jeff Burns, soon gained FSU’s 28.
After a first down at the 18 on a short throw, Toledo came up short at the 13. On fourth down, a 30-yard attempt for a field goal went awry on a bad snap. FSU took over at the 22.
Darrin Holloman sped 33 yards to the 44 with a pass, and soon Tanner caught a 12-yarder at the 30. Herb Gainer pulled in another Ferguson shot at the 22.
But Clark tipped a pass and teammate Harold McGuire intercepted, getting a 13-yard runback to the 19.
When, three plays later, Toledo punted, Deion Sanders fumbled and Burns got it for the visitors at FSU’s 42.
Three straight passes missed, and a punt went into the end zone.
A 20-yard pass to Gainer and a 10-yarder to Carter reached Toledo’s 48.
On fourth and 2 at the 40, FSU went for it – springing Darrin Holloman on a reverse as Parrish Barwick threw a powerful block that keyed a 10-yard gain.
On a pitchout, Keith Ross sailed to the 1. But Ferguson was stopped on a sneak, and Ross nailed by Clark at the 8 on another pitchout. After a pass failed, Derek Schmidt kicked a 24-yard field goal for 3-0.
A pair of Bergan passes got the Rockets just over midfield. On a Kelvin Famer run, Fred Jones caused a fumble on his tackle – and teammate Paul McGowan recovered at FSU’s 49.
Ross dug for 9. From the 36, fullback Dayne Williams hit the middle, appeared stopped, but put one hand on the ground and spun out of trouble. Suddenly, he was free on an all-the-way scamper that put Florida State up 10-0.
Offside on the kickoff, the Seminoles had to boot again – and got into difficulty. Brent Jones fumbled after a 21-yard runback to the 37, Hughley picking up the ball and moving on to FSU’s 45.
A pass gained FSU’s 32. The Seminoles held, with tackle Eric Krohn stopping a run for a 3-yard loss. Bruce Nichols’ try for a 46-yard field goal missed.
Carter’s 10-yard catch started a movement. Strong running by Sammie Smith led on to the Toledo 34.
Darrin Holloman grabbed a 14-yard toss.
From the 13, David Palmer got 2 on a run, 4 on a pass, then a touchdown on a 7-yard romp up the middle to extend it to 17-0.
With 6-foot-3 A.J. Sager moving in at quarterback, the Rockets got going on passes, including a 19-yarder to John Perry that reached FSU’s 48. FSU stiffened, forced a punt – to its 13.
Three Smith runs attained the 43 before time ran out.
At this point, Florida State led 310-112 in yardage. FSU had split it almost evenly, 160 rushing as Smith got 63 in 10 carries, and 150 passing. Ferguson had hit 14 of 21 and Carter had caught four for 42.
Stout running from the 35 stamped early FSU action of the last half.
Floyd figured five straight gains – a screen pass for 5 to midfield, then runs for 4, 7, 6, and 10.
That led to a first down at the 17. But on third down at the 13, Randy White fumbled on a reverse and Keith Dunbar recovered for the Rockets at the 24.
Spurred by a Terry Warren sack, FSU defenders forced a punt and FSU started anew at its 41.
Three plays later Jim Marquard intercepted a Ferguson pass at the Toledo 39.
With short passes, Bergan moved Toledo across midfield to a first down at the 38. But Florida State checked a running game, and took over on downs at the 28.
Three runs left FSU perhaps a half-yard short, and the Seminoles took a surprising gamble.
On the fourth-down pitchout, Ross failed to make it and Toledo had another opportunity inside FSU territory.
On first down, receiver Bob Wasczenski was racked by Stan Shiver as he pulled in a pass, bringing a fumble that Martin Mayhew claimed for FSU at the 38.
Nothing came of that either – except Louis Berry ended up punting for the first time in the game.
It was a beauty and well covered. Toledo was stuck at its 14 after a 49-yarder.
Soon came a punt that Sanders returned 32 yards to the Toledo 36.
In came Peter Tom Willis at quarterback, as Ferguson went to the bench with 17 completions of 28 throws for 176 yards, with two interceptions.
The redshirt freshman hit his first pass, a 9-yarder to Gainer. Toledo granted no more.
On fourth down, following a holding call, Schmidt tried a 54-yard field goal. He missed.
When the Rockets again punted, FSU moved, behind Willis, from its 32.
Darrin Holloman got 20 on a reverse, to the Toledo 49. Clipping, on another Holloman reverse, knocked FSU back to its 41.
But Darrin Holloman tucked in a 20-yard pass at the 38.
Pass interference brought a first down at the 23.
Gainer caught a Willis pass at the 12, and on the following play made a nifty one-handed grab for a touchdown. The score became 24-0 with 8:33 to play.
Another Toledo punt, and a 21-yard runback by Sanders to the Rockets’ 42.
Three straight Willis completions – the last a 21-yarder to Tanner Holloman – gained the 15.
Clipping cost the Seminoles, but Willis got back to the 15 on a pass to Pat White.
It came to fourth down, with Schmidt entering for a field-goal snap. But the snap was errant. When holder Louis Berry tried to pass under heavy pressure, he was intercepted at the 17.
With two minutes left, another punt gave FSU the ball at its 44 and a chance for Danny McManus to quarterback for the first time since last year’s Auburn game.
Three times he handed off to Floyd for runs, once passing to Scott DiMare for nine before the clock caught FSU at the 25.
It was the Seminoles’ first shutout since Tennessee-Chattanooga 37-0 in 1984.

A Taylor-made defeat.
Husker QB shreds FSU.
LINCOLN, NE – Controlling the football all the way, Nebraska finally wore Florida State’s football team down here Saturday 34-17.
In its first night game ever, Nebraska struck behind the gifted quarterbacking of sophomore Steve Taylor.
Florida State had plenty going for it – including a dazzling 57-yard scoring run on a fake reverse by Sammie Smith – but could not handle Taylor.
At halftime, on Smith’s run, Florida State led 14-10. Soon, on Derek Schmidt’s 46-yard field goal, it became 17-10.
That was it. Nebraska choked off FSU’s offense, and opened its attack full-throttle.
Ten minutes before the kickoff, the rain – which had suddenly ceased around 3 p.m. – returned and drenched a bundled-up crowd in Memorial Stadium. The temperature stood at 55, and the wind seemed relatively mild at 10 miles per hour.
Starting at its 26 after the kickoff, Florida State got stopped cold on two runs.
Third down, needing 12, and the Seminoles crossed-up defenders with a draw, Victor Floyd went to the 40, then fumbled. The ball rolled forward on the artificial turf and Mark Salva claimed it for Florida State at the Nebraska 43. It was, officially, a 33-yard Floyd run.
A Chip Ferguson pass to Darrin Holloman got 13.
Two plays later, Ferguson hit Floyd over the middle for six points on a 30-yard play. Derek Schmidt’s kick provided a 7-0 lead.
On a keeper, quarterback Steve Taylor got Nebraska off and running with a 15-yard scamper to his 48. Three more runs left it 4th-and-1 at the FSU 43.
As Nebraska gambled, linebacker Paul McGowan caught Keith Jones a yard short on the run, but the tailback broke free and struggled to a first down at the 41.
A couple of plays later, Jason Gamble caught a Taylor pass, but fumbled when racked by Fred Jones, and Deion Sanders recovered for Florida State at the 29.
Herb Gainer caught passes for 13 and 10 yards, sandwiched around a running loss of two. Nebraska stiffened, and Louis Berry punted to the 29.
With Taylor running three times out of five, the Cornhuskers moved methodically to a first down at Florida State’s 41. A pass to Von Sheppard got 12 more.
Nebraska drew a 5-yard motion penalty on a play where players stopped, and Taylor passed to Ray Nelson in the end zone in meaningless action.
On a particularly big third-down play, Sanders put pressure on a sweeping Jones, bringing a 4-yard loss.
Dale Klein was short on his 49-yard try for a field goal.
The Seminoles got just five, on a Floyd run, in three downs. Berry’s 44-yard punt left Nebraska at its 23 shortly before the quarter ran out.
Running lifted the home team to its 37 before a clipping call knocked it back to the 23.
On a bomb, Taylor seemed on target to a streaking Rod Smith, and the crowd bellowed for an interference call on defender Martin Mayhew who seemed responsible for failure to connect. No flag fell, and it was just an incompletion.
Soon a punt gave FSU good position at its 45. But it was to bring trouble.
A swing pass to Williams got good yardage. But it came to fourth down and a foot to go at Nebraska’s 47.
Gambling, Florida State dealt the ball to Ross on a pitchout – and he got nothing.
After three downs, however, Nebraska was at its 46 following an incompletion, a run for just three, and a penalty against Taylor for throwing after running past the line of scrimmage.
A punt placed Florida State in a hole at its 11.
One pass failed, and another lost two. A draw got just one.
Following Berry’s 41-yard punt, and a 3-yard loss on an attempt to return, Nebraska was again at its 46.
Twice Taylor missed on passes.
Dropping to pass again, he stood there for a moment – then tore away on a run. After 34 yards, Taylor was stopped by Sanders’ shoestring tackle at the 20.
On the following play, Taylor scored easily with a keeper off the left side. Klein’s kick tied it 7-7.
From its 28 after the kickoff, FSU got nine on a pass to Pat Carter. On his first run of the night, Sammie Smith crunched out two for a first down.
The Seminoles appeared stymied, however. One play, a Ferguson pass, found an official signaling a Nebraska interception after the ball had bounced on the turf. Fortunately, the play was nullified by offsides against the Huskers.
When Berry went back to punt, he had trouble handling the snap and the effort was short, to the Nebraska 39.
The runs of Jones led to midfield. Dana Brinson’s short reception keyed another first down at FSU’s 39.
On a third-down reverse, Sheppard was hemmed up for a loss that would have put the Huskers out of field goal range. But when noseguard Tom Harp grabbed the runner’s facemask, it was ruled a flagrant violation – and a 15-yard penalty placed the Seminoles at their 21.
After two plays, FSU’s grudging defenders had granted nothing to runs. On third down, Ken Kaelin scrambled to the 16.
Editor’s Note: Nebraska kicked a 33-yard field goal which was not included in this article. On the kickoff return, Ross got a face-mask call and a 15-yard penalty that placed Florida State at its 43 with 46 seconds remaining.
Then Florida State sprung the play it had worked on so hard.
It was a fake reverse by Darrin Holloman with the ball going to Sammie Smith on a pitch, keeping it, instead of handing off, and sweeping around end. Slashing brilliantly through the secondary, getting a big block from Gainer, he turned on the burners and was gone on a 57-yard scoring run that put Florida State up 14-10.
A shocked Nebraska had time for little more before time ran out in the half.
At this point, Nebraska had a small lead in total yardage, 194 to 175. On seven of 12 pass completions, FSU had 84, and on 34 runs Nebraska had 165. Taylor had accounted for 98 running on 13 keepers.
Nebraska had held the ball almost two thirds of the time with its ground game, 19 minutes to FSU’s 11.
On an opening last-half series, from its 24, Nebraska got no further than its 30. A punt put Florida State in good position at its 38.
But first-down motion as Smith sped for good yardage with a pass cost FSU 5.
When Berry soon punted, Brinson got loose on a good return of the long boot – but fumbled when hit by John Hadley. And Tallahasseean Brian Davis recovered for FSU at the 35.
A Ferguson keeper got 5, and a pass to Pat Carter was judged a foot short. On a fourth-down bid, FSU was flagged for illegal procedure.
With the ball back at the 30, Schmidt kicked a 46-yard field goal for 17-10.
Sheppard’s 35-yard kickoff runback got Nebraska in business at its 37.
On successive runs, Jones got 3, 9 and 12 yards to FSU’s 39.
McGowan’s big hit of Kelly for a yard loss had the Huskers at the 33.
But the gifted Taylor ripped loose on fourth-and-4 to a first down at the 31.
This time it came to third-and-8 at the 19. On a Taylor pass, a late flag came and Eric Williams was judged interfering on a defensive play. That brought a first down at the 6.
Taylor needed just one play – a keeper to the right – for the touchdown that tied it 17-17.
More trouble followed.
Two plays following the kickoff netted nothing from the 24. Clipping set the Seminoles back to the 12, and a sack of Ferguson left them at the 3.
Berry’s punt from deep in the end zone was a beaut – 47 yards to the Huskers’ 49.
Kaelin quickly got the home team to FSU’s 34 on a pair of runs. Jones led on to the 22. Pass interference on Martin Mayhew brought a first down at the 12.
Quickly, Taylor hit Todd Milligan for a touchdown – the first of his Nebraska time for the sophomore quarterback.
As the quarter closed, FSU was in difficulty at its 28 following a second-down sack of Ferguson.
A personal-foul call on an out-of-bounds hit as Ferguson threw gave FSU some room at its 44.
Smith ran for 5, but the rest was futility, as Smith lost 1 and Ferguson was again sacked.
Berry’s punt, partially blocked by Cleo Miller, went 25 yards to the 33.
Staying on the ground, with Jon Kelley leading the surge, the Huskers moved to midfield.
A 13-yard Taylor pass got Nebraska going again following a penalty.
Pretty soon Sheppard sprung open and Taylor connected with him on a 46-yard pass play that brought a fourth Nebraska touchdown and made the score 31-17.
Now the Huskers were applying extraordinary pressure to Ferguson. Only a roughing call off that pressure kept the Seminoles moving – the penalty bringing a first down at their 45.
When Berry punted, Nebraska nearly blocked it again. The boot stopped at the Husker 31.
Taylor and Kelley, running on FSU’s weary defenders, soon had Nebraska at the Seminole 40.
Note: Article ends here but Nebraska made a 38-yard field goal with 1:23 to go in the game.

Tangled up in blue.
Seminoles get stuck in a 10-10 Tar Heel tie.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Dick Crum maybe phrased it best.
"You don't like ties," said North Carolina's head coach, "but it was kind of a screwy ball game,"
Crum came out of Campbell Stadium's 90-degree heat on Saturday afternoon with his knee torn up following a sideline collision with linebacker Fred Jones.
And Florida State emerged with its pride ripped by these underdog but unbeaten (2-0-1) Tar Heels in this 10-10 outcome.
The play on which Crum got hurt was indicative of a hatful that did not quite go Florida State's way - with Jones almost intercepting before crashing out of bounds. An interception would have provided opportunity deep in Carolina territory shortly before the half.
"You don't know whether to be happy because you did not get beat, or disappointed because you did not win," said FSU coach Bobby Bowden, who hardly seemed happy at all.
On the game's next-to-last play, a crowd announced at 57,611 - fourth largest in FSU history - was primed for celebration, as Derek Schmidt lined up, the ball squarely in front of the uprights at the North Carolina 20, to kick the sort of 37-yard field goal that had always been almost automatic for him.
It was close - Schmidt thought he made it for sure, and holder Danny McManus thought he might have - but officials said it missed.
Much of FSU's problem all afternoon was the North Carolina defense.
"From tackle to tackle there, they may be as good as Nebraska," said Bowden. "They got some first-round draft choices on that defensive front."
Four times in the first half Carolina sacked quarterback Chip Ferguson - each time on first down - in succession, at UNC's 31, FSU's 31, UNC's 33 and 37.
"Man, you ain't supposed to get sacked on first-and-10!" said Bowden. "You're doing something dumb."
He said lots of it was the quarterback not getting the ball away soon enough. "Chip just had a rough time," said Bowden. "I don't know if it was playing against North Carolina - in his home state - or what."
Last year Ferguson sparked the winning rally over the same foe.
FSU turned to redshirt freshman Peter Tom Willis for the final series of the first half - and the remainder of the game. Ferguson finished 6 of 13 for 86 yards and no interceptions. Willis was 8 of 12, 109 yards, one interception and was once sacked. Bowden said that he used Willis, rather that junior Danny McManus, because the latter had not had a good week of practice and he felt he was not quite ready.
North Carolina jumped in front 7-0 the third time it got the ball.
Florida State had slammed quickly into UNC territory on Tanner Holloman's surprising 20-yard burst. Immediately, Ferguson was sacked by tough safety Norris Davis for a loss of 13. Sammie Smith, who in his first start got 64 yards on 14 runs, rambled to the 30.
Two plays later Schmidt, who later said he had been bothered during the week by back spasms, was wide on a 45-yard try for a field goal.
When North Carolina punted, Deion Sanders seemed loose on a 70-yards-plus runback to the 10 - but a clipping call canceled it, placing FSU back at its 10.
Louis Berry's 43-yard punt - one of his shorter ones in a phenomenal game that saw him average 48.9 on eight efforts - gave Carolina a shot at its 45.
A 35-yard Jonathan Hall pass to fullback James Thompson, as Sanders overshot him on an early tackle attempt, was the play that paved it. On third down, Hall passed wide to split end Eric Streater for an easy touchdown.
Ferguson overcame his second sack with a pass to Darrin Holloman that netted 38 to Carolina's 29. A procedure penalty hurt. On fourth down, Schmidt missed a 44-yarder.
Following a UNC punt ruled dead at the FSU 3, the Seminoles struggled. Defenders fought off North Carolina as the running of big Derrick Fenner led to the FSU 29. After three futile passes, a fake field goal went awry, with holder Mark Maye - moving back to pass - getting mobbed by Felton Hayes and John Parks.
But when FSU moved, on a 25-yard pass to Phillip Bryant, to Carolina's 33, Ferguson fumbled when again sacked - Davis recovering for Carolina at its 42.
When, after a Sanders interception, FSU got a shot at Carolina's 48, Ferguson was once again sacked. It was deemed time for a change.
Sanders popped up with a second interception at FSU's 19 on the last half's opening series. Whereupon Carolina deemed it time for a change to Maye at quarterback.
A 58-yard Berry punt backed Carolina to its 5.
After a Gerald Nichols third-down sack of Maye at the 2, a Ken Miller punt was blocked by Felton Hayes. The ball flew out of the end zone for a safety - providing no chance for an FSU end-zone recovery that would have meant a touchdown - and Carolina's lead was cut to 7-2.
Sanders returned the ensuing free-kick punt 26 yards to the Carolina 42. T. Holloman banged for 9, then Smith for 12, and the Seminoles were quickly at the 18 - but Smith fumbled when hit hard by Mitch Wike, Carolina recovering.
Florida State came right back. T. Holloman got 31 yards, to the Carolina 29, out of a screen pass. Next play, freshman Ronald Lewis out-leaped a defender in the end zone for FSU's lone touchdown on a 29-yard play.
A two-point play, Willis passing to Herb Gainer, put FSU up 10-7 in the final three minutes of the third quarter.
Promptly, Carolina drove to a tie - going 67 yards on 12 running plays. A 15-yarder by Brad Lopp, and a reverse for 11 - that a Sanders tackle perhaps saved from all-the-way damage - led to the 28. Fenner soon got 10 more to the 15, before FSU called a halt as linebacker Paul McGowan threw Lopp for a 2-yard loss on a vital third-down play.
Lee Gliarmis tied it with a 23-yard field goal with 12:14 to play.
That was the only time Carolina got into FSU territory in an odd last half that saw the Tar Heels somewhat control the ball, 37 plays to 25.
On an 18-yard pass to Bryant, FSU dug to the Carolina 35, but on second down, Willis got sacked back at the 47.
Then FSU got to Carolina's 36 - but Derrick Donald intercepted at the 14 with 6:30 to go.
After a punting swap, Carolina maneuvered to its 46. But Maye got sacked trying to pass on third down, and Nichols claimed the fumble at the 27.
As the fans whooped, Victor Floyd ran to the 20, but was stopped cold on its next carry.
Schmidt entered, and all seemed well. It was not.
FSU might have tried another play before using its single remaining timeout. "It seemed right," said Bowden. "With the ball in the center there, and the sort of field goal we make all the time. If we had passed, and there had been an interception, we would never have forgiven ourselves."
His team, now 1-1-1, on its own field barely outgained Carolina, 271 yards to 217. Next Saturday, for the first time, it plays on mighty Michigan's field.

Err FSU.
Stout defense is wasted in 20-18 loss to Michigan.
ANN ARBOR, MI - Florida State defenders dreamed of serving Michigan up on a tarnished silver platter at its own Homecoming.
And for oh-so-long there, that defense had the Wolverines right where they wanted them.
But Michigan slipped away 20-18.
A crowd of 105,507 - biggest ever to see any State of Florida football team in action anywhere - left rather quietly on this gray Saturday afternoon, perhaps thankful to have escaped such a trap.
It was a trap primarily constructed by Fred Jones, Paul McGowan and their defensive ilk.
It was as close as 20-18, and it was not. "We're about as good as they are," said FSU Coach Bobby Bowden, "but they won. I'd like to play them in Tallahassee."
Trailing 13-10 with nine minutes left, Bowden's Seminoles stood poised at their 40 - but a third interception of a Chip Ferguson pass, the second by alert Ivan Hicks, crushed the chance.
Taking advantage of a dog-tired FSU defense, Michigan did what it needed to win - taking full advantage of a turnover, just as it had for its first touchdown.
The Wolverines killed 7:08 off the clock in striking for the score that made it 20-10, getting the 53 yards in 12 deliberate plays. The capper, with 1:18 left, was Tom Wilcher's 7-yard scoring run.
Then came critically-needed offensive drama for the Seminoles in the form of junior quarterback Danny McManus, who looked hardly the worse for 18 pounds lost to the flu earlier in the fall.
In six plays - all of the passes - FSU got the touchdown. That payoff came on a 20-yard toss to Herb Gainer. With a 2-point McManus pass to Herb Gainer, it became 20-18. But that, with 16 seconds left, was it after an ensuing onside kick failed.
It had been 10-10 at halftime, staying that way until a 32-yard field goal by Pat Moons ate up the third quarter.
For proud Michigan, it was the 18th straight homecoming victory in the coaching time of Bo Schembechler, who in 50 regular-season games against non-conference foes now owns a record of 40-8-2.
"We played pretty well," said Schembechler. "It was a pleasing victory - beating Florida State - I have great respect for them."
For the Seminoles, it was somewhat of an echo - if a ringing one - of earlier action when an often red-hot defense had been cooled as on frustration after another confronted the offense. In this game, Michigan had the ball for almost 12 more minutes: 35:52 to 24:08. Also 12 more plays, 72 to 60.
Rain that threatened in the morning went away, leaving the teams to battle on damp artificial turf under cloudy skies. "The weather was excellent," said Bowden, "and so was the field."
Both teams ran the ball better on the other than perhaps neither had expected. In the late going, Michigan effectively sprung a fresh runner in Tom Wilcher, who churned 53 yards in 9 carries, well complementing the charges of Jamie Morris, who got 99 in 19.
Similarly, FSU surprised with 75 yards by Sammie Smith in 13 runs - almost all coming in the first half when for a time it seemed he would break this game wide open. But Smith was checked first by the aggravation of a pulled groin he had received in practice on Wednesday, and when he tried to go again in the last half a charleyhorse got him.
"Their cut-back hurt us badly in the first half," said Schembechler, "but once we stopped that, our defense was able to shut them down."
Bowden saw it a little differently. "Our backs were cutting back a lot on their own," he said. "They were running to daylight. They're beginning to learn to do that."
Victor Floyd did some key pounding in picking up 58 of the Seminoles' 145 yards on the ground during a game that saw them total 285 yards, or 47 fewer than Michigan.
Jim Harbaugh, the Heisman-hopeful quarterback of the Wolverines, was not the overpowering factor he has been so often. He got 122 yards passing on 9 completions of 16 throws.
Meanwhile, Ferguson, sacked only once all day, had some problems with receivers dropping passes. The FSU quarterback finished with just six completions of 19 attempts for 73 yards. Plagued by sacks in other games, he was nailed just once in this one. "There must have been five drops in the first half," said Bowden. "No telling what would have happened except for that."
Michigan made as though to run away from the Seminoles early, moving from the opening kickoff to the 16, where Pat Moons missed a 35-yard try for a field goal.
Right away, a first-play-from-scrimmage fumble by Smith presented Michigan with a chance at the FSU 17. Gerald White, out of Titusville and one of 10 Floridians on Michigan's roster, put the home team up 7-0 with a 2-yard touchdown run with a pitchout.
FSU quickly retaliated with Derek Schmidt's 31-yard field goal after Smith's strong running led to the 10. Later Schmidt would miss a 49-yarder, and Moons a 52-yarder.
On a time-consuming drive into the second quarter, Michigan made it 10-3 when Moons was good with a 26-yarder. On the preceding play, safety Greg Newel had averted a sure touchdown by batting around a Harbaugh pass to an open receiver.
The Seminoles tied it 10-10 on a 70-yard push in 10 plays, highlighted by Smith's early running and Floyd's late toting.
From the 7, Tanner Holloman got the touchdown on a screen pass from Ferguson as Mark Salva paved the route with a vital block.
"Florida State is a talented team," said Schembechler. "Excellent defensively."
Bowden said he would have loved to run the football more.
"But we were forced into a passing game," he said.
He hinted that too many holding penalties forced FSU to throw more often than it wanted.
Clearly unhappy over eight penalties for 84 yards, Bowden shook his head when questioned. "I won't even comment on that," he said. "I'm too upset."
Michigan was also heavily penalized - 9 for 88 yards.
Schembechler thought Wilcher definitely a key to his team's second-half success.
"His fresh legs picked us up," he said. "He came in and sparked us on that scoring drive in the fourth quarter.
"But we probably scored too soon. We scored on second down. We should have scored on fourth."
The coach, happy in victory, was making jokes.
While McGowan led FSU's defense with 11 tackles, according to a pressbox accounting, several were intensely involved, notably including Jones in the late going. Terry Warren twice sacked Harbaugh, and Shelton Thompson had a couple of tackles for losses.
One surprise move saw FSU start Anthony Williams, a freshman, at noseguard over Tom Harp, who had a pinched nerve in his neck. Harp later came in, Williams playing perhaps a third of the game.
Summarizing his thoughts, Bowden's emotions were decidedly mixed.
"I really felt good about some things," he said, "I couldn't have been more proud.
"But I sure hated to lose."

Riding a Wave.
FSU surges in second half to win 54-21.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Rusty at the start, Florida State raced away like a greased locomotive and ran over Tulane 54-21 here Saturday night.
A crowd of 53,701 saw the 2-2-1 Seminoles rip from a 14-6 halftime lead to a succession of last-half points that seemed to come with almost ridiculous ease.
In contrast, the early going seemed ridiculously difficult.
In the beginning, Tulane moved downfield as though it were nothing.
A 17-yard pass, Terrence Jones to Mario Ballestrasse, started it. Marvin Allen ripped off 12 yards with a pitchout, and Rodney Hunter followed with a 10-yard run. A 19-yard pass to Larry Route gained the FSU 17.
But tackle Eric Hayes - soon to exit the game with a pulled hamstring - stopped a run for no gain, and Terry Warren collared Jones for a loss of 2.
On fourth down, Dan Guirl missed a 36-yard try for a field goal.
FSU got nothing going, and Tulane maneuvered from its 34. An FSU offside helped Tulane mount a drive, leading to a first down at the 42. But Tulane soon punted into the end zone.
Floyd's 7-yard run on second down was all FSU could do. Louis Berry's punt was short, to the Tulane 41.
Once again FSU defenders held, forcing another punt.
Finally, the Seminoles extracted a first down - on a 12-yard pass, Danny McManus to Darrin Holloman, at the FSU 32.
That was to be the only first down of an opening quarter that soon ended.
Sammie Smith had come in to spell Floyd at tailback, but swarming Tulane defenders stopped him short as they had Floyd.
A 46-yard Berry Boot backed Tulane to its 22.
Short passes to Michael Pierce soon had the Green Wave at its 34. It was the fourth straight series Tulane had moved the ball with at least some success.
From the FSU 24, following a Tulane punt, Pat Carter caught a 7-yard pass. But Smith slipped on a run and lost 3.
Herb Gainer pulled in a first-down toss at the 37. But again Smith lost yardage - this time 2.
A 17-yard throw to tight end Tom O'Malley got the Seminoles into Tulane territory for the first time, at the 48.
Smith went wide for 8. But Tanner Holloman got nothing on third down, and it came to fourth and two at the 40.
Coach Bobby Bowden made the decision to go for it.
Smith got it, on a pitchout, with a determined off-tackle run for 5.
Soon freshman Ronnie Lewis snared a 14-yard pass at the 21.
Floyd got just 3 on a pass, Darrin Holloman only 2 on a reverse. But Holloman caught a third-down pass to keep things goings at the 10.
A pass missed, but Floyd cracked up the middle to the 1.
With 5:03 left in the half, McManus sneaked the final yard for the touchdown.
On the 76-yard drive, McManus had completed three vital passes on third down. Additionally, Smith had sun for a big 5 on fourth down.
Quickly, the iced was broken.
On the kickoff return, Tulane got backed to its 8.
When Jones threw on first down, outside linebacker Felton Hayes intercepted, and raced into the end zone for a touchdown on a 20-yard play.
In 15 seconds of playing time, FSU had gone in front 14-0.
A roughing penalty against Florida State on the return provided Tulane with position at its 37. Three short gainers, including a 12-yard pass to Marc Zeno, led to FSU's 40.
A poor pitchout lost 4, but soon a holding call again made it first down at the 40.
A pass to Hunter reached the 19 but a penalty moved the action back to the 24.
Then Jones found Zeno with a 24-yard scoring pattern as Florida State's secondary got mixed-up on coverage.
Mike Parker missed the point-after kick, leaving it 14-6 with 1:28 to go.
From the 34, McManus hit Gaylon White with passes of 8 and 13 yards in a quick move to Tulane's 39. But when he threw deep, Kevin Tate intercepted at the 2.
Jones kept for one play before time ran out in the half.
At this point, Tulane led in yardage, 154 to 133, in first downs, 13 to 8. Jones had completed 12 of 19 passes for 132 yards, McManus 11 of 17 for 91.
Remarkably, both teams had run an equal number of plays, 33 each.
From its 33, following the second-half kickoff, Florida State came running.
On second down, Tanner Holloman burst up the middle for 22 to the Tulane 38.
Two plays later, Lewis grabbed an 18-yard pass at the 18.
Soon, Victor Floyd moved wide on a run, 13 to the 3. Two plays later, Floyd scored on a 3-yard run, and it became 21-6.
For the first time all evening, Tulane got stopped as Allen was racked by Fred Jones for a 2-yard loss on a first-down run. A couple of plays later, FSU had position at Tulane's 48 following a 26-yard punt.
A good Floyd run was rubbed out by a holding assessment. From the FSU 42, Floyd ran for 8 and O'Malley caught a pass for 12. On fourth and one at the 39, Floyd struck for 14.
Then Floyd ran for 9, 5, 5 more and 3 to a first down at the 2.
T. Holloman scored from there, and it became 28-6.
Suddenly, Tulane was at FSU's 25 on a sensational one-handed Zeno reception of a Jones bomb that defender Eric Williams had deflected.
The Jones took over, soon scampering 15 to the 3 on a quarterback draw, then keeping on the option for an easy touchdown. An interference call on Williams provided another try after a futile pass for two. This time, Jones kept, again dancing across the goal. The two points narrowed the score to 28-14.
A 23-yard catch by Floyd moved Florida State quickly to Tulane's 38. A 17-yarder to Herb Gainer reached the 16. Runs by Smith and David Palmer gained the 8, but a fumble lost 6.
On the second play of the fourth quarter, Schmidt kicked a 36-yard field goal after his first effort - also good - was cancelled by a five-yard penalty against FSU.
Keyed by Warren's second sack of Jones - this time a 9-yard setback to the 9 - Florida State forced a punt from the Tulane `13.
A punt presented a chance from the Green Wave 46.
Pretty soon Smith slid wide on a run and raced 32 yards to a touchdown that made it 38-14.
A 14-yard sack of Jones by Tallahasseean Brian Davis, back to his 8, brought on another Tulane punt.
This one was blocked by John Parks, with Chris Scott - the punter - falling on the ball in the end zone for a safety.
On Tulane's ensuing free-kick punt by the luckless Scott, Keith Ross sped 73 yards on the runback for a touchdown. The score now was 47-14.
With 8:24 left, Peter Tom Willis got a quarterbacking turn for Florida State. McManus bowed out with 16 completions of 25 passes for 171 yards.
After Willis was sacked for minus-15, Berry punted to Tulane's 34.
Jones was not through. He lofted a bomb that tailback Allen hauled in for a 65-yard gain to the 1. Two plays later, Jones scored from there, and it was 47-21.
Willis hit Pat White with a 22-yard pass, and Scott DiMare with a 16-yarder, down to the Tulane 16 following a futile onside kick by the visitors.
Soon, freshman Dexter Carter scored on a 19-yard run.
With something over two minutes left, Chip Ferguson became FSU's quarterback, starting after a punt at the Tulane 43.
With Ross contributing a 17-yard run, FSU drove inside the 15, staying on the ground, content with what it had as the clock ran out.

Shock-proof.
FSU routs Wichita State 59-3.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Rolling to a 38-0 halftime lead, Florida State cruised on to a 59-3 victory here Saturday night.
Wichita State was never close to being in it.
After Danny McManus had quarterbacked that huge halftime advantage, passing for three of the touchdowns, he took a spot on the bench the remainder of the way.
Florida State cut loose defensively as well. In one early series, outside linebacker Terry Warren twice sacked Brian McDonald. Just a little later, a hard Warren tackle put McDonald out of action for the evening.
As a crowd of 56,222 applauded, Florida State moved its record to 3-2-1. Rarely has victory come easier.
It took all of one minute and 28 seconds for Florida State to get on the scoreboard in this one.
The first play - a surprising one - saw McManus roll on a bootleg for 22 yards to his 46. Two short passes led to the 40.
On the fifth play, McManus, with all day to throw, hit Ronnie Lewis with a 40-yard scoring pass.
Derek Schmidt kicked his 100th consecutive extra point, and Florida State led 7-0.
On a draw play, David Smith popped for 20 yards to the Wichita 40. The visitors got only five more, and soon punted.
In nine plays, the Seminoles covered 67 yards to grab a 14-0 lead. A 14-yard pass to Herb Gainer was an early key. A pass-interference call, as McManus threw to Lewis at the goal line, soon had FSU in position at the Wichita 26. On a reverse, Lewis sped for 14. Two plays later, Victor Floyd scored on a 13-yard run.
When, on the Shockers' next series, Dave Armagost tried to punt, cornerback Eric Williams whipped in to block it. Teammate Terry Warren picked up the ball and ran for 8, but a clipping call on that run set FSU back to the Wichita 32.
Florida State got nothing out of that. Unable to move, the Seminoles called on Schmidt for a 48-yard try for three. The field goal was wide.
Warren caught quarterback Brian McDonald for a loss of 7. But, following a 10-yard pass to Stan Wahlmeier, Wichita got to its 40. Running on fourth-and-one, Wichita got it. On second down, Warren came up with his second sack of the series - a loss of 6 for McDonald to the 32.
A 44-yard bunt backed FSU to its 28, Gainer's diving catch of a McManus bomb placed FSU at the Wichita 28.
On the following play - last of the opening quarter - Gainer pulled in a 23-yarder at the 1.
David Palmer got the touchdown from there a couple of plays later, and it was 21-0.
Hit hard by Warren as he threw incomplete, McDonald was helped off the field, and David Kruse replaced him at quarterback. A sack by Deion Sanders for a huge loss was nullified by an FSU lineman offsides.
A couple of short Keith Ross runs, coupled with a face-mask penalty for 15, got FSU to the Wichita 44. Terry Anthony, a freshman, snared his first pass of the season, an 18-yarder.
Three following passes found no one, and Schmidt kicked a 41-yard field goal for 24-0.
Backed to their 15 following the kickoff, the Shockers got out of the hole on six straight runs by David Smith - the last for 13 yards to the Wichita 49.
But when Kruse pitched out to Smith, for a seventh straight run, the back fumbled. Odell Haggins recovered for FSU.
Floyd slipped wide for 12, stumbling over a teammate. Offensive pass interference soon cost FSU 15, and soon Florida State punted for the first time.
Noseguard Tommy Harp caught Valasco Smith for a 7-yard loss at the 13. Stymied, then penalized two straight times as it tried to punt, Wichita eventually booted the ball after getting backed to its 5.
FSU got a start from the foe 30 following Sanders' 9-yard return. After a couple of runs reached the 19, McManus threw to a streaking Gainer for an easy touchdown, and it became 31-0.
Valasco Smith was again slammed for a loss, this time for 5 by Haggins. Next play, John Eaford intercepted a Kruse pass, providing FSU a shot from the Wichita 28.
McManus got the touchdown that made it 38-0 on a 22-yard pass to Scott Dimare.
With 17 seconds left in the half, Wichita got inside FSU territory for the first time, helped along by a Valasco Smith run for 13, then later a personal-foul assessment against FSU.
Four tries from there got nothing. Brad Fleeman missed a 51-yard attempt for a field goal on the final play of the half.
The Seminoles, halfway through, had outgained the Shockers, 295 yards to 91, with McManus passing for 201 of it on 11 completions of 19 efforts.
Immediately, FSU went to freshman Peter Tom Willis at quarterback in the third quarter.
In three plays, the Seminoles got a touchdown - Tanner Holloman for 17, Pat Carter catching a 21-yard pass, then Lewis taking a 30-yard throw for the touchdown.
Hemmed up at its 13 after the kickoff return, Wichita four downs later was at its 8. A punt gave FSU the ball at the Wichita 41.
A 12-yard pass to Tom O'Malley and a 12-yard run by Palmer led to the 2, where Palmer scored. It became 52-0.
On a delay run, Valasco Smith tore away for 35 to FSU's 30. Four plays later Fleeman missed on a 42-yard shot at a field goal.
Chip Ferguson became FSU's quarterback with a bit over five minutes left in the third quarter.
A swing pass from Ferguson to Dexter Carter got 32 yards to midfield. Carter's running spurred a first down at the 32 as the quarter ran out.
But Ferguson, playing behind reserve linemen, got sacked.
When Louis Berry punted, he seemingly made no attempt to get the ball off after receiving the snap, and was buried by tacklers for a 14-yard loss. Wichita State took over at FSU's 49.
A 22-yard pass to Anthony Hardy gained the 25.
David Smith's strong running spurred the visitors to a first down at the 1.
At this point, FSU had its first defensive unit back in action.
Paul McGowan and Warren caught David Smith for a loss of 1. A halfback pass by David Smith failed. Then Kruse got sacked at the 11 by Stan Shiver.
On fourth down, Fleeman kicked a 29-yard field goal for 52-3 with 9:14 left.
With Willis back in at quarterback, a pass was fumbled by Lewis and Wichita claimed the ball at the FSU 19.
Valasco Smith, on three runs, got 9, 1 and 4 yards to reach the 5.
But a poor pitchout lost 13.
A 35-yard Fleeman field goal was wide.
In the late going, a Smiley Elmore fumble was recovered by FSU's Bruce Heggie at the Wichita 27.
In came freshman Alan Stewart, a freshman option operator at quarterback. On a slick keeper, Stewart moved wide and scored on a determined run that brought the score to 59-3 with 1:51 to go.
That, mercifully, wrapped it up.

FSU runs away from Louisville 54-18.
LOUISVILLE, KY – Howard Schnellenberger had spoken of playing Florida State “in our back alley.”
And a pretty dark alley it was for just a little while here Saturday night, but the Seminoles recovered quickly from a 7-0 deficit and raced past Louisville 54-18.
Danny McManus misfired on his first pass attempt of the evening, then connected on eight straight – including three for touchdowns – to spur the Seminoles to a 37-18 halftime advantage.
FSU quickly extended it to 44-18 five plays into the second half on a 9-yard McManus run.
It was FSU’s ninth victory over Louisville in 10 tries, also its ninth straight.
The triumph, before a rain-soaked crowd of 22,822, boosted FSU to 4-2-1 and left Louisville at 2-5.
For the first time all season, Louisville won a coin toss – and chose to reserve its option, going on defense at the start.
From the 20, Victor Floyd reached the 32 in two runs.
Three more runs gained the 42, but Floyd then fumbled on the wet field. Calvert Cole recovered for Louisville at FSU’s 47.
Hard running by John Adams, a 220-pound fullback, led to the 37.
Suddenly, Larry Stricklin struck left on a delay run – 33 to the 4.
On third down, Rodney Knighton, a 200-pound fullback, scored from the 1 and Louisville led 7-0 after a point kick.
Keith Ross gave FSU good position with a kickoff return to FSU’s 39. Two plays later, Floyd got 15 on a draw, to the Louisville 46.
Herb Gainer caught a 10-yard pass at the 33.
On third and nine following an offside, Darrin Holloman made a diving first-down catch of a throw at the 21.
As the cornerback slipped and fell, Gainer two plays later caught a touchdown pass on a 20-yard play to tie it 7-7.
Continuing to run well, Louisville cut out a first down at its 40.
Whereupon, Jay Gruden, the sophomore quarterback from Tamps, went deep with a pass that James Howard, a 6-foot-1 freshman from Key West, plucked 53 yards downfield at the FSU 8.
But on third down, Deon Booker let a touchdown pass go through his hands, and Louisville settled for a 21-yard Danny Cerione field goal for 10-7.
From the 23, Pat Carter started the Seminoles moving with an 11-yard reception, On two runs, Sammie Smith got 13 and 9, to the Louisville 39. Soon, Gainer grabbed an 18-yard pass at the 20.
On the first play of the second quarter, a late hit following a Smith run vaulted FSU to the 8.
Third down at the 6, and McManus passed to Gainer on a slant for the touchdown.
But following 108 successful extra-point attempts during his Florida State time, Derek Schmidt kicked one low and it was blocked. The score stayed 13-10.
With linebacker Fred Jones making a key tackle on a screen pass, FSU defenders bottled up Louisville at its 22.
Deion Sanders wheeled the punt back 18 yards to the Louisville 43.
After gaining 5 on a run, Smith lost 6.
But McManus found Darrin Holloman wide open at about the 5 and hit him with a bomb for an easy touchdown, the play covering 44 yards.
In short order the score jumped from 20-10 to 27-10.
When Gruden passed to Booker at about the Louisville 35, the receiver was rocked by a Paul McGowan tackle, producing a fumble that safety Stan Shiver plucked out of the air. Shiver ran 29 yards to the 6 before getting pulled down.
Dayne Williams scored on a 6-yard burst up the middle.
A sack of Gruden, with Gerald Nichols and Tom Harp leading the charge, discouraged the Cardinals on the next effort.
Two 12-yard runs, by Floyd, then Reno Fells, spurred the Seminoles just inside Louisville territory.
On fourth down at the 42, Florida State faked a punt, with the ball going to fullback Williams, who got the first down by inches at the 38.
Fells ran to the 14, and Tom O’Malley got 21 out of a pass to the 3.
On a pitchout, Floyd got the touchdown easily.
Eric Vaughn’s 28-yard pickup with a pass got Louisville to FSU’s 37, but Fred Jones sacked Gruden back at the 44.
With 52 seconds left in the half, Louisville called a timeout, then went for it on fourth and 17. A scrambling Gruden found Vaughn with a throw at the 18.
Howard pulled in an over-the-middle pass for a touchdown. Going for 2, the Cardinals got it following an FSU offside on the first endeavor on a Gruden keeper, and it became 34-18.
John Parks claimed Louisville’s short kickoff, placing FSU in business at its 48. On a run, Smith spun for 16 to the Louisville 36 with 14 seconds left.
After two futile passes, Florida State brought in Schmidt with the clock showing three seconds, and the junior put through a 53-yard field goal as time ran out in the half to make it 37-18.
At this point, Florida State showed 299 yards of offense, with 156 of it running as Floyd led with 62 on 13 carries. McManus had thrown only 13 times, but hit eight for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Gainer has pulled in four for 54 and two touchdowns.
Louisville had stacked up 184 yards, with 130 passing as Gruden connected on seven of 14.
But much of the starch came out of Louisville with a fumble at the Cardinal 31 on the second-half kickoff, resulting in a recovery by the Seminoles’ Rick Tuten.
Williams slammed up the middle twice, to the 15. On third down at the nine, McManus bootlegged to his left for an easy six points.
Three Louisville plays, and FSU got the ball back at its 30 after a punt.
Williams led to midfield, then Floyd took over on a series of runs, capped by Floyd’s 16-yarder to the 17.
Following a holding penalty, FSU settled for a 36-yard field goal by Schmidt that boosted the count to 47-18.
A 13-yard pass to Knighton and a 30-yarder to Danny Thomas quickly got Louisville to FSU’s 27. Two runs reached the 11. Third down at the 8, and Florida State ushered back its first-team defenders. A blitzing Deion Sanders pressured Gruden into a hurried throw. Then Martin Mayhew broke up a fourth-down throw.
Backed up, Florida State brought in Peter Tom Willis. After an incompletion, Willis turned Smith loose on a run for 11, then Palmer with a toss at the 29. A bit later Palmer caught another short pass at the FSU 48, but on a following run Smith fumbled, and Mike Minogue got it for the home team.
A couple of plays, and FSU’s Dedrick Dodge got it back with an interception at the 23.
On a fake reverse, Smith shot through for 19 to midfield. Following a holding penalty, Florida State punted for the first time – with 13:19 left in the game, and Louis Berry’s effort rolled 41 yards away into the end zone.
With a 16-yard pass to Calvin Davis, keying a drive, Louisville moved deep. A Curtis Thomas interception was nullified by a roughing-the-passer call, but Shiver soon swiped another to give FSU the ball back at its 8.
Chip Ferguson took a turn at quarterback and moved the team out of the hole with a pass.
The Seminoles got a final touchdown with 1:18 left when Dexter Carter tore away on a 30-yard scoring run, capping a 57-yard drive in seven plays.
But the rest was mostly tit-and-tat.

Testavertigo.
Hurricanes spoil FSU’s dream 41-23.
MIAMI, FL – Florida State had it going as few thought it could. Then the improbable dream became a nightmare.
Ahead 17-14 with 7:49 left in the first half, the Seminoles lost their quarterback and a football game to No. 1 Miami 41-23.
With Danny McManus abruptly sidelines, his throwing-hand thumb severely sprained, the magic was gone. Florida State struggled on, leading 20-14 at the half, hanging on by a 23-21 thread going into the final quarter. But it was over.
Florida State could not move the football, and Vinny Testaverde was zeroing in on a tiring, overburdened defense.
Late in the third quarter, the Heisman Trophy favorite guided an eight-play, 85-yard drive capped by a 20-yard touchdown strike to Brian Blades, and Miami was ahead for good, at 27-23 with 12:26 to play.
Then it became fun time for the 8-0 Hurricanes – a 20-point eruption in that fourth quarter as Testaverde finished the day with three TDs passing, and two running, completing en route 21 of 35 throws for 315 yards.
“You can talk about O.J. (Simpson), and all of ‘em, and you take this guy here – he is unbelievable!” said FSU coach Bobby Bowden of Testaverde.
But as an Orange Bowl crowd of 62,834 – biggest ever to see a game of this series – and a national CBS-TV audience watched, Testaverde ad seemed vulnerable enough in the early going.
What they saw in the first half, with McManus in there, was a Florida State team pretty well running the show – leading Miami in yardage at intermission, 186 to 148, with Testaverde just 7-for-14 with 85 yards and sacked four times.
And what they saw in the last half of this tingle was something else.
Florida State in that last half ran just 24 plays, holding the ball for a little more than 10 of the final 30 minutes. The Seminoles got 56 last half yards, 28 of which came on a meaningless last series.
Meanwhile, as Miami ran 43 plays over the last two quarters, Testaverde was going 14-for-21 and 230 yards, suffering only one more sack.
“I was a little frustrated because I wasn’t really on,” said Testaverde of his early going. He had sprained a foot in Miami’s last game two weeks ago, and was perhaps favoring it.
“I wasn’t pushing off well off my back foot,” said Testaverde. “I was hurting. But there was no way I wouldn’t play if it was at all possible.”
And there had seemed no way on this hot, fair, breezy afternoon these teams would not go toe-to-toe until the final gun.
McManus, who would hit eight of 15 throws for 85 yards, took Florida State to a 7-0 lead at the start, on a nine-play, 80-yard drive highlighted by three straight opening completions. But after the latter one, a 20-yarder to the Miami 32, tailback Sammie Smith was helped off the field – never to return – with a battered shoulder after making the catch. Strong running by Keith Ross and Tanner Holloman took FSU on down, with Holloman scoring from 6 yards out.
Back came Miami to tie 7-7, Alonzo Highsmith running hard, Warren Williams getting the TD on a run from the 4. For the game, Miami would have Highsmith, Williams and Mel Bratton run for 51, 53 and 59 yards. The net rushing was 128, which was an upset. In all of the previous three games between these two, Miami had netted just 58 yards on the ground.
Late in that first quarter, Rod Carter’s hard tackle of Ross precipitated a fumble that Miami’s Bain Tolbert covered at the FSU 23. On third down, Testaverde worked around, and finally threw to an open Highsmith for a TD and a 14-7 lead on a 23-yard play.
Then came the dazzler of the day.
Ross fielded the kickoff 5 yards in the end zone, then brought it out – as FSU fans shuddered – to about the 10, where he stopped short while Miami tacklers converged. Suddenly, Ross whipped the ball across field to freshman Dexter Carter, who caught it after a perfect bounce and streaked down the left sideline for a touchdown that tied it 14-14. Officially, it was a 100-yard play.
“we had been working on that one about two weeks,” Bowden said later.
A second quarter unfolded that might well have produced 21 points for Florida State, but did not.
Deion Sanders wheeled a punt 30 yards to the Miami 40. Short McManus passes led to the 21. The Seminoles settled for the first of three Derek Schmidt field goals, a 36-yarder.
When Miami punted again, Alphonso Williams raced in to block it, the Monticello sophomore chasing the ball toward the goal – finally, at about the 10 – an official ruled it the 6 – trying to flip it over the goal with a hand. That move brought a 15-yard penalty, providing FSU with a start at the 21 following the turnover.
Three plays got 2 yards. On fourth down McManus, down to hold on what was a fake field-goal play, reared up, looking for receivers, found non – and ran to the 11. He was six inches short of the first down.
That was the play when he hurt his hand, he would say he had no idea how he hurt it.
“We were not going to sit on a lead,” said Bowden of the fake. “We were going for the points. We felt we had to have them.”
It seemed to matter not so much when on Miami’s first scrimmage play, Deion Sanders made a flashy interception and ran it back 31 yards to Miami’s 17.
That was the third straight opportunity inside Miami territory – a chance at the 40 followed by one at the 21, then the 17.
“Yeah, we squandered some opportunity,” said Bowden. Miami, however, is one of the nation’s best defensive teams, as well as offensive teams.
Peter Tom Willis, in at quarterback, had a shaky start. A fumble that lost 5 was followed by a sack that cost 8. Finally, Schmidt kicked a 36-yard field goal for 20-14.
“We would have won anyway, with McManus in there,” said Miami coach Jimmy Johnson. “I told our players at halftime to have fun.”
Miami did.
On an opening series, Testaverde was big on third-down plays as the Hurricanes drove 76 yards to a 21-20 lead. From the 8, Testaverde surprised with a bootleg run for the score.
“Penalties were one thing that hurt us,” defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews said later. “Those that were called, and those that were not. On that bootleg run, their man tackled Eric (cornerback Williams).”
FSU was penalized seven times for 75 yards, Miami four for 37.
A personal-foul penalty on a following kickoff nullified a big return by Ross.
Florida State found opportunity at the Miami 36 later in the quarter following a Tracy Sanders interception. FSU squeezed out a first down at the 25, but that was it. Schmidt’s 45-yard field goal gave the Seminoles a 23-21 lead, but it was all too brief.
Miami promptly went 85 yards to a 20-yard touchdown pass to Blades.
A pass over the middle to Floyd for 19 got FSU to midfield, but that was the Seminoles’ last real shot as the drive stalled and Louis Berry punted to the 7. In 10 plays, the gifted Testaverde brought the score to 34-23, scoring on another bootleg – from the 1 – after a 27-yard pass to Michael Irvin had gained the 4. The dangerous Irvin pulled in seven passes for the day and got 95 yards out of them.
Florida State appeared to have magnificent defensive contribution from several. Noseguard Tom Harp had three of the five sacks – Eric Hayes and Sheldon Thompson accounted for the other two. A press-box accounting had linebacker Paul McGowan in on a game-leading 11 tackles, with eight outright. Free safety Greg Newell was credited with nine.
In the last four games of this series, FSU has sacked great Miami quarterbacks – Bernie Kosar and Testaverde – a total of 24 times, but lost three of the four.
Now 4-3-1, Florida State faces its final road game Saturday at South Carolina. McManus does not figure to be able to play.
“We’ve lost to the No. 1 team in the nation,” said Bowden, “and we’ve lost to the No. 2 (Michigan), as well as the one that was No. 3 (Nebraska).
“And all on the road.”
Miami, too, faces its final road game, at Pittsburgh.
“Great teams don’t doubt they will win,” Testaverde was saying, “and we are a great team.”
No one was arguing.

FSU: 29 for a quarter.
Third period is Gamecocks’ 45-28 undoing.
COLUMBIA, SC – Shaking down the kind of thunder it had not known in awhile, Florida State stormed back here Saturday afternoon.
And so did Chip Ferguson.
Down 15 points in the second quarter, the Seminoles slammed home 29 third-quarter points and won 45-28. It was an outcome that makes some sort of bowl bid all but certain should Florida State, in a Homecoming game next Saturday afternoon, get past Southern Mississippi. FSU is now 5-3-1.
“Chip was the key man,” said Coach Bobby Bowden, “and, boy, did he do the job! What we saw today was the Chip Ferguson I remembered.”
As he hit 15 of 22 passes for 228 yards, the sophomore indeed looked like the tough-and-dangerous quarterback of the Gator Bowl, and not at all like the vulnerable one of a particularly difficult early season. Ferguson had chafed after being demoted to third string, behind Danny McManus and Peter Tom Willis. One thing, he had better offensive-line protection than earlier.
“Not too much os different,” insisted Ferguson in the dressing room. “They (offensive linemen) are young like everybody else on our team, and they’re learning.
“I think our line blocked great today. When we got the run going, it opened up the passes, and then the passes opened up the run.
“It feels good to get back. I worked my butt off.”
A mostly partisan crowd of 71,689 worked its enthusiasm off in the early going, and found little to cheer about as Florida State dramatically reversed things on this warm (85 degrees) afternoon.
“It looked like,” said Gamecocks coach Joe Morrison, “We had the halves switched around on us.”
Precisely.
While seeming to score much as it pleased, Florida State simply would not let Carolina have the football after intermission. The run-and-shoot offense, so capably quarterbacked by gifted freshman Todd Ellis, got just 96 last-half yards after totaling 231 in the first two quarters. For the day, Ellis hit 20 of 33 passes for 267 and two touchdowns, but was sacked twice and intercepted three times.
“Don’t let ‘em on the field,” said FSU defensive assistant Chuck Amato slyly, “and the run-and-shoot becomes a walk-and-pop.”
Florida State let Carolina’s offense on the field for just 20 last-half plays. Over-all, the Seminoles controlled the ball, 81 plays to 61, and held the ball almost 12 minutes more, 35:58 to 24:02.
Running themselves for 279 yards, as Victor Floyd got 115 in a workhouse 24 carries, the Seminoles totaled 546. Floyd had a superb day, catching four passes and scoring three touchdowns.
But, in truth, many Seminoles had superb days.
“I told them at halftime that if we won,” said Bowden, “no play would be more important than Randy White’s 43-yard catch in the first half.”
Down 14-3, backed to their 7, the Seminoles got out of the hole on White’s hot catch of a Ferguson strike at midfield. But there were so many big plays, including a 49-yard kickoff return by Keith Ross that ignited that second-half fire, and a 23-yard gain by Darrin Holloman on a reverse when there was no way not to lose 5.
Willis had started for the Seminoles and, first opportunity, took the team smoothly downfield to the Carolina 14, where he got shaken up trying to pass. Ferguson came on briefly for the first time, and FSU settled for Derek Schmidt’s 33-yard field goal.
Then a Doug Philpott interception off Willis started the Gamecocks crowing. A 38-yard Ellis pass to Sterling Sharpe followed an interference call – the Seminoles drew 11 penalties for 95 yards – paved an Ellis 3-yard run for the touchdown and 7-3. Soon after, Willis was intercepted again, at the FSU 32, but naught came of it as Scott Hagler missed a 43-yard try for a field goal.
From that point on, Ferguson quarterbacked.
It became 14-3 on a 34-yard Ellis pass to 6-foot-3 Ryan Bethea, who hurt his knee after he came down with the ball that had seemed well-defended by Martin Mayhew.
At that point, FSU got backed up following a penalty, and White caught the long 43-yard pass. Floyd led on to the 17, and Schmidt booted a 33-yard field goal. “At that time,” said Bowden, “any points at all were very important for us.”
Back came Carolina on Ellis’ passing, a 10-yarder to Danny Smith bringing the TD and a 21-6 lead.
And the rest was all FSU, though no one would have believed at the moment.
A 25-yard Deion Sanders punt return staked FSU to Carolina’s 45. A 29-yard Ferguson pass to Floyd cut it 21-13. With time running out in the half, tackle Gerald Nichols covered a fumble at the Carolina 21. Terry Anthony caught a pass at the 11.
Darrin Holloman slipped on a reverse, getting 8 to the 3, and a pass to an open man was too low. With four seconds left, Schmidt missed a 29-yard field goal shot. Bowden was hot, and is rumored to have imparted the fact to the team at halftime.
“The consensus of all our coaches was that we were not hitting,” Bowden said. “Kids were standing around.
“I told them if they thought South Carolina was out-hitting them now, just wait until the second half!”
All season long, South Carolina has had a reputation of being a strong second-half team. All season long, Florida State has had something of a counter reputation.
And then the third-quarter explosion.
“I think the first drive of the third quarter set the tone for Florida State,” said Carolina linebacker Gus Robinson. “They just tried to shove the ball down our throat. It seemed like everything they did worked, and then it was just the steamrolling effect.”
Floyd’s running, coupled with a 28-yard pass to Gainer, got FSU close on that opening second-half drive, and Floyd got the touchdown from the seven. Whereupon, Pat Carter caught a Ferguson pass for two points that tied it 21-21.
Then FSU marched from its 14, the Holloman reverse preventing a stall, the rest of it a chopping, sustained drive. Floyd scored from the 3 after Ferguson had got a first down there – by all of an inch – on a fourth-down bid.
After which, tackle Bart Schucts intercepted Ellis as Fred Jones applied heavy pressure, providing FSU with a shot at the Carolina 25. Dayne Williams scored from the 1.
Then it was Ellis fumbling, Jones recovering for FSU at the Carolina 28, with Williams soon after busting 14 yards up the gut for an easy touchdown that completed the four-touchdown third quarter.
South Carolina made a little noise after Philpott pulled his second interception, getting a touchdown on Harold Green’s 1-yard run that capped a 64-yard drive. That made it 42-28, and the natives stirred when FSU was obliged soon after to get off its only last-half punt.
But a Tracy Sanders interception of Ellis stilled remote hopes, clinching a 2-6-1 record for the home team.
Schmidt got another field goal, from 34 yards out with 1:56 left.
“It’s been our trademark all year,” said Morrison, “but today it was Florida State that took it to us in the third quarter.”
FSU defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews said a “little old bitty change” was made at halftime. Essentially, a blitzing strategy was adjusted.
“It was probably the best we’ve done this year – the offense and defense playing together,” said Andrews.
Bowden seemed to agree.
“I don’t think I can remember a third quarter when our team turned it around so big so fast,” he said.

Good ol' Southern Missmatch.
49-13 win assures FSU a bowl.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Rolling early, coasting late, Florida State's football team flexed more late-season muscle here Saturday.
And with a 49-13 flattening of Southern Mississippi on a sunny Homecoming afternoon, the Seminoles virtually assured themselves a fifth straight bowl game.
Best guess: the All-American in Birmingham at 8 p.m. on New Year's Eve.
Scheduled for a WTBS telecast, the All-American will pay at least $800,000 - more than FSU got from the Gator Bowl last year, more by $200,000 than the Hall of Fame in Tampa, more probably than 6-3-1 Florida State will be offered by any bowl.
"I'd be disappointed if we didn't get them," said Bill Oakley, the bowl's representative here Saturday, "but life would go on."
FSU may not officially accept a bid until 6 p.m. Saturday, but prior negotiations are permitted and most arrangements will be cut and dried well prior. Three other bowls - Peach, Hall of Fame, Florida Citrus - had sc outs here Saturday, and additional ones are known to have some interest in Florida State, including the Sun and Liberty.
Bowls might want to check things out with Jim Carmody.
"We played perhaps the best team we played this year," said the Southern Mississippi coach, "including Texas A&M and Alabama. They have a fine team, and it looks like they are getting better."
Bobby Bowden seemed to agree with the latter thought.
"We made strides in the Miami game," said the FSU coach, and in each game since. If we can just make strides one more game.
"This game today never was in doubt once we got rolling."
Behind the smooth quarterbacking of Danny McManus, the Seminoles zoomed to a 28-0 halftime lead. Much of the rest was mop-up work, notably including Sammie Smith on a 62-yard run for the last touchdown of the day.
McManus was in for only the first last-half series. He completed 11 of his 16 passes for 149 yards.
As FSU won its 30th of 39 Homecoming games, and its 11th straight during the Bowden years, a high-scoring tradition before the Old Grads continued. Only once at Homecoming has a Bowden team scored fewer than 30 points - beating South Carolina 27-7 in '79.
The Seminoles have scored more than 40 points in five of their last six starts.
In a sticky first quarter, McManus showed his merit.
Backed to the 6-yard line when Southern Miss punted out of its opening series, McManus hit Pat Carter with a telling third-down pass for 20, then steadily directed a 13-play drive of 94 yards that Dayne Williams capped with a 9-yard run.
Next time FSU got the ball it was at its 13. Some good Victor Floyd running - 12 carries, 65 yards for the day - led out of the hole, before McManus found Herb Gainer with an 18-yard pass. A punting swap put the Tribe in position at midfield. Following a 48-yard pass to Randy White, FSU got the touchdown on a 3-yard Floyd run for 14-0 early in the second quarter.
"McManus did an excellent job," said Bowden. "If you know what he was trying to do, and what he actually did, you would be amazed."
Carmody had some idea. "They executed extremely well on offense," he said.
McManus and Chip Ferguson hit 10 different receivers with passes. The Seminoles also used Peter Tom Willis and Alan Stewart at quarterback in the late going, but neither threw a pass.
The game became 21-0 when Dedrick Dodge intercepted an Andrew Anderson pass, and zipped 47 yards for the touchdown.
One of Southern's better plays came when punter Billy Knighten, fielded a low snap, dodged a rush by stepping to one side, and boomed a 42-yard kick.
But FSU replied with a 61-yard drive, McManus twice passing to Reno Fells to get it started, and Keith Ross scoring from the two.
Southern threatened with time running out in the half, penetrating to FSU's 23. But Eric Williams intercepted an end-zone pass to abort the bid.
Southern got a touchdown following an odd kicking sequence in the third quarter.
FSU downed a Louis Berry punt on the Southern 2. Soon, Knighten punted out of the hole - but Deion Sanders could not get a handle on the ball as he tried to field it, Southern recovered his muff at the FSU 13 in a 76-yard reversal of position.
Anderson got the touchdown on a 7-yard run.
Behind Ferguson, the Seminoles quickly went back up by 28, at 35-7, an 11-play drive of 62 yards topped by a 14-yard scoring pass to Tom O'Malley.
Then quickly it jumped to 42-7 as Williams flagged his second interception, steaming 52 yards on this one.
Southern surprised with a 52-yard scoring pass, Anderson to Lyneal Austin.
"I think other than careless, we played pretty darn good," said Bowden. "That long pass, and messing up on that punting exchange - we can play better than that."
When Willis came in at quarterback for Florida State, his first move was the day's most efficient.
He simply dealt the ball to Sammie Smith, who found running room to his left and outran everybody - 62 yards for the only scoring behind the closing quarterbacks.
As the Seminoles stacked 443 yards of offense, 136 came running, Smith leading with 74 on just four carries. Southern was restricted to an even 300 total yards, with 165 passing.
"That might have been the best first half we played all year," said Bowden. "I hope we haven't peaked. We want to peak in two weeks.
"McManus, you know, might be pretty doggone good. He starts and he finishes - we win! That's the way it's been."
At 7 p.m. here on the 29th, FSU closes against rival Florida. Both teams have open dates this week.
After four straight victories over Florida, FSU has now lost five straight.
"Disregard anything I've said the last five years," said Bowden to writers. "It ain't come close to working.
"We've tried everything.
"I got a feeling you got to be the better team to beat them."

Oh, that Florida reign.
Gators leave Seminoles mired in the 17-13 muck.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Impaled by its own mistake, and the gritty endeavor of an old rival, Florida State's football team fell 17-13 here Saturday night.
As a record Campbell Stadium crowd of 61, 303 watched on a rainy, sloppy evening, Florida took it away with 3:05 showing on the clock, the Gators' sixth straight victory in the series.
An 18-yard pass from Kerwin Bell to Ricky Nattiel was the decisive difference.
Florida had led 7-0, but Florida State fought back to a 10-10 halftime lead, then took the lead 13-10 on Derek Schmidt's short field goal.
Multiple FSU opportunities were gobbled up by penalties and a rugged Florida defense.
In the beginning, on the mushy field, Florida got poor position on a kickoff return.
From the 15, three plays lost yardage. James Massey got just a yard. As big Jeff Zimmerman jumped offside, Florida was penalized 5 - then 5 more when for delay as Kerwin Bell petitioned an official for relief from the crowd noise.
After Massey got just 2 on a run, Jamie McAndrew punted.
As Deion Sanders tried to return the 35-yarder, roughing on the tackle cost Florida 15, and Florida State had a start at Florida's 27.
And pretty soon, in a stunning turnaround, Florida State found itself at its own 9.
On first down at the 27, Keith Ross on a fake reverse lost 8. Victor Floyd got 5 to the 30 after a pass missed.
But Derek Schmidt appeared to get a bad hold as he tried for a 46-yard field goal, and missed.
Unable to move beyond the 37, Florida punted again - to the FSU 32.
Floyd lost 2, then 2 more - and a clipping penalty knocked the Seminoles back to their 14.
Whereupon illegal procedure cost 5 more, to the 9. Two runs reached the 14 before Louis Berry punted 43 yards to the Florida 43.
On first down, Deion Sanders intercepted Bell's underthrown pass at the FSU 32.
But a Floyd run got just 3. One pass missed, and a second Danny McManus effort was overthrown - and Ricky Mulberry intercepted at the FSU 40.
Octavius Gould ran for 5. On a following run, Dwayne Ferguson fumbled but teammate Satcey Simmons covered the rolling ball for an 11-yard gain to the 24.
Whereupon, Gould got 5 more. Bell hit Anthony Williams with a pass at the 8. On a run to his right, Gould scored the touchdown and Florida led 7-0.
On a striking runback of 71 yards with the kickoff, Keith Ross dodged and broke tackles to stake the Seminoles to a shot from the Florida 20.
Dayne Williams pounded to 5, but Floyd was stopped short. Again, a procedure penalty cost FSU 5.
On fourth down, Schmidt's 36-yard field goal narrowed it to 7-3.
Here came Florida again, marching through the rain from its 31.
An 18-yard Bell toss to Simmons started it. Offside against FSU as a pass fell incomplete on third down kept it going. Massey runs led on to the FSU 35.
With rain falling heavily as the second quarter started, Frazier caught a 9-yard pass. Then Florida turned back to the ground - Massey carrying six straight times, until it came to fourth down at the 3.
Jeff Dawson made an 18-yard field goal for 10-3.
In came Sammie Smith, running for 7 to the FSU 34 on his first try.
Then, with 8:50 left in the half, McManus fired a 16-yard pass over the middle to Tom O'Malley at the Florida 49. That was FSU's initial first down of the game, also its first completion.
Four straight Smith runs reached the 31.
On third down, McManus again hit his tight end O'Malley, for 11 at the 20.
Third down at the 15, and Ross on a pitchout spun to the 8 to keep the drive moving.
But a delay penalty, then a fumble lost a yard - before Smith, on a pitchout, sailed 13 yards to the 1. On third down, he scored easily off the right side. Schmidt's kick tied it 10-10.
FSU mistakes continued. A personal-foul call, as Anthony Williams got stopped on a first-down run, lifted Florida to its 43.
Soon, FSU forced a punt that Sanders hustled back to midfield, but a flag had fallen - and Florida State was penalized to the 10 on a clipping call.
With time fading in the half, McManus dealt the ball to Smith on three short runs. With three seconds left, Florida had time for a play from its 49 following a Berry punt. Bell scrambled out of bounds on the last play of the half.
At this point, Florida led in yardage, 109 to 93, with the Gators owning 70 on the ground and Florida State 66. On 11 runs, Smith had 51 yards. McManus had hit just two of six passes, Bell four of eight.
In the early going of the last half, Smith swept for 14 to the FSU 40. Then he got 6 more.
Two plays later, Smith tore wide and suddenly was free for what seemed a 52-yard scoring run - but holding was called on the play.
Runs by Keith Ross led to Florida's 39. But a fine defensive play by Adrian White caught Ross for a loss.
On fourth down, needing 2, FSU faked the punt, with the snap going directly to fullback Dayne Williams, who fumbled the ball and was quickly swarmed by tacklers for a 5-yard loss at the Florida 43.
The Gators got nothing. On third down, defensive back Dedrick Dodge had a full head of steam as he zeroed in on a Bell pass - but dropped an interception that surely would have brought a touchdown had he held on.
After a punt, O'Malley pulled in a 12-yard pass at the FSU 41.
On a reverse, Darrin Holloman dug to the Florida 46. Smith added 7, and a personal foul vaulted the Seminoles to the 24. Tanner Holloman ran for 8, and Smith got a first down at the 10.
Florida tightened. Fourth down at the 4, and Schmidt kicked a 21-yard field goal for 13-10.
As Florida punted from its 35 after gaining just 6 yards on the heels of the kickoff, Florida State was offside - and the Gators got a first down at their 41.
Unable to throw, Bell scrambled for 10 yards to FSU's 47.
A short pass to Ricky Nattiel left Florida just short of a first down. On fourth and inches, Bell tried a sneak over the top - and officials ruled he got nothing.
Florida State took over, promptly got penalized back to its 23 for a clip as the quarter ended.
Smith got 9, then 9 more before Berry punted - 38 yards to Florida's 20.
A second-down pass to Nattiel lost 5, and Florida soon had to punt from its 15. McAndrews got off a good one, 44 yards to the FSU 37.
T. Holloman got 12. Floyd, on two runs, reached the Florida 41. Holloman got 8 more, and Smith 9 to the 24.
After Holloman got just 2, Smith lost 8 trying to find running room. Williams got only a yard.
Schmidt again tried a 46-yard field goal in the slop. The ball got nowhere - never seemed to rise above the level of anyone's head.
Florida took over at the 40 - and drove.
Surprising running by Wayne Williams keyed it. First he got 11, and the 9 to the FSU 39. And soon it was Williams again, up the middle for 14 to the 22.
Third down at the 18, and Bell passed to Nattiel over the middle for a touchdown that put Florida up 17-13 with 3:50 left.
From the 20 after the kickoff, FSU could not move. Berry punted to Florida's 22 with 3:03 showing on the clock.
With the help of an offside on third and one, Florida State got a return punt, conserving time by calling timeouts.
With 1:38 to go, Florida State had a last chance from its 42.
McManus threw four straight passes. All incomplete.
Florida happily killed the clock.

Ringing it in with a win.
Smith's running leads FSU 27-13.
BIRMINGHAM, AL - Clinging to the shirttails of swift Sammie Smith, Florida State toppled Indiana 27-13 here Wednesday night.
In somewhat of an uninspired farewell to the old year, FSU won the 10th All-American Bowl in rather routine fashion. Except for Smith.
Gaining 205 yards in 25 carries, the second-year freshman scored twice, on runs of 4 and 9 yards.
Ahead 20-3 early in the last half, FSU withstood an Indiana challenge led by scrambling quarterback Dave Kramme.
Amid colorful pageantry and fireworks that appeared to frighten Renegade, the Seminoles steed, the 10th All-American Bowl moved under way on a cold, 41-degree evening.
Right away Indiana found itself in a hole, at its 10 following a penalty on return of the opening kickoff. Three running yards and two pass completions later, FSU got a splendid shot from the Hoosier 45 following a punt.
FSU faltered, missing on an opening pass, then flagged for holding as Sammie Smith spun away for about 15 yards before fumbling - the ball rolling out of bounds.
Two futile passes, and Louis Berry's first punt left Indiana at its 22.
A personal-foul call as Anthony Thompson ran got Indiana to the 40. Ernie Jones' 11-yard pass catch got 11, and Andrew Powell added 12 to the FSU 37 on a run. Clipping on a Thompson run knocked the Hoosiers back to the 49.
A 16-yard pass, Dave Kramme to Dane Lilja, soon had Indiana at the 28. On fourth-and-one, a Kramme sneak got the first down at the 27.
Three more crunching runs reached the 18, where on fourth down Pete Stoyanovich kicked a 35-yard field goal for 3-0.
Keith Ross was a step away from going the distance as he returned the kickoff 44 yards to the FSU 45.
Hard running by Smith, the last time after a short pass, led to the Indiana 41. Gainer got 18 on a pass, and Smith ran for 14 to the 4.
Next play, Smith slipped quickly left, scoring easily. But a poor snap contributed to a blocked extra point by linebacker Van Walters, leaving it 6-3.
Scrambling, Kramme on third down ran for 8 to start a movement for Indiana. Again on third down - this time from the shotgun formation - the quarterback again scrambled out of trouble, and passed 28 yards to Lilja, at the FSU 31. As a long quarter ended, Indiana was looking at third-and-eight at the 29.
Kramme threw long, and errantly, into the end zone. On fourth down, Stoyanovich was short on a 47-yard try for a field goal.
Up the middle went FSU's Smith for 25. Then he ripped for 10 to the Indiana 35. On to the 25, and a 16-yard Danny McManus pass to Tom O'Malley at the 9.
Once again Smith slashed up the middle, scoring easily from 9 yards out. With a Derek Schmidt point, it became 13-3.
On the running of Thompson and the scrambling of Kramme, Indiana spun across midfield - but was slapped back by a holding call to its 33, then a delay penalty. A third-down pass to Stacy Dawsey for 23 gained FSU's 49.
But successive sacks by Stan Shiver and Paul McGowan slammed Kramme at the 50, then his 40. A 12-yard Deion Sanders punt return provided FSU opportunity at its 34. But on second down Smith, breaking free, fumbled and Alex Green claimed the ball at the FSU 49.
Thompson popped up the middle past defenders - 26 yards to the 23. Still running strong, Thompson had the Hoosiers at the 5 a few plays later.
But a procedure penalty cost 5. Whereupon, Terry Warren sacked Kramme at the 25. And Stoyanovich missed a 42-yard field goal.
FSU had time for little from its 25 before time ran out in the half.
At this point, Smith had run nine times for 85 yards, Thompson 15 for 71. Interestingly, the Hoosiers led in total yardage, 178 to 136.
Very quickly, Smith was over 100.
From the 26, following the second-half kickoff, he hot 9. On a reverse, Darrin Holloman whipped for 36 to the Indiana 27.
Smith, on two runs, reached the 15. In came Tanner Holloman, getting 7, then on the next play dashing off tackle for 8 and a TD that made it 20-3.
On a pair of passes to Dawsey, Indiana moved 23 yards to midfield. Third down at the 39 following two hard runs, and Tony Buford caught a big pass at the 27.
But Shiver caught Thompson for a loss of five. Passes failed, and Stoyanovich missed another field-goal attempt, this one from the 49-yard range.
FSU got nothing. Smith was caught for a 4-yard loss, then could not quite come up with a deep McManus pass.
Once more on third down, Kramme connected - to Buford for 20 yards at FSU's 37. Sticking to the ground, Thompson in the fore, Indiana cut out successive first downs, to the 14.
It came to fourth down and inches just short of the four, and Kramme got the inches on a quick sneak.
With 1:27 left in the quarter, Powell got the touchdown from the 2, and it became 20-10.
From the 22, Smith ran four times, and FSU overcame a 5-yard penalty in pounding to the 50 in the early moments of the last quarter.
The Seminoles probed on to the Indiana 39, but Alex Green intercepted a McManus shot at the 30.
Overcoming a penalty, Kramme hit Dawsey with a 12-yard pass at the 40, then scrambled 15 to FSU's 44.
Suddenly, Thompson broke free, Greg Newell finally bringing him down after a 25-yard dash to the 19.
Three runs got just 6. Stoyanovich kicked a 30-yard field goal for 20-13 with 7:09 left.
Stymied after two plays from the 31, FSU got a key third-down catch from Pat Carter for 11 at the 43. Smith sliced to the Indiana 46. After a procedure penalty, Smith on the draw popped for 13 and a first down at the 35.
Two plays later, Smith cut to his left for 21 to the 10. T. Holloman then burst up the middle for his second TD for 27-13 with 2:56.
