Everybody recruited Smith out of Apopka High in Zellwood, Florida. He possessed the coveted combination of size and blinding speed. While in high school, Sammie ran track played basketball and football. He was named a USA Today All-American and named all-state in football. He was also the 4A state champion 100-meter and 200-meter.

When Smith joined the Seminoles in 1986 it was the year that kicked off the unprecedented 14-year run of top five ranking and two national champions. The team finished 11-1 in both Sammie's sophomore and junior seasons and he was named MVP of the All-American Bowl and the 1989 Sugar Bowl. He rushed for 2539 career yards and 15 touchdowns and scored three more touchdowns receiving. Sammie finished his FSU career as the school's third all-time leading rusher to ever wear the garnet and gold.

But football wasn't Sammie's only talent. The two-sport athlete was also a star track athlete for the Seminoles. He won the Metro Conference 100 and 200-meter titles and also ran on the Metro Championship 400 relay team.

In 1989, Smith was selected by the Miami Dolphins with the 9th pick in the first round of the NFL draft. He played four seasons in the NFL.
