FSU offense to the rescue.
Seminoles answer Raider threat 40-16.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Considering the buildup, it was not exactly what Florida State had in mind.
But considering the first half, the Seminoles will gladly take it.
FSU beat Texas Tech 40-16 on Saturday night in its season opener at Doak Campbell Stadium. It's a season many expect to be one of FSU's best, due largely to a defense that's been billed as overpowering.
It was simply overpowered in the first half, as the Red Raiders offense moved with ease. The only thing that stopped them was two fumbles. That was all the edge the FSU offense needed.
After a sluggish preseason, the Seminole offense was unstoppable as it built a 30-16 halftime lead. Considering the caliber of opposition, the 30-minute scoring show will stand up to most in the school's high-powered history.
Quarterback Danny McManus passed for 185 yards in the first half, and sophomore tailback Dexter Carter did a bang-up job filling in for Sammie Smith and Victor Floyd, both of whom missed the game with knee injuries.
Another guy who did an admirable job filling in was Texas Tech quarterback Scott Toman. His crisp passing and running had FSU reeling in the first half.
The second half was an altogether different story. Sparked by a blocked punt, FSU took over and turned the offensive cavalcade into a defensive slugfest.
Texas Tech never came close to scoring after halftime, while FSU punched across 10 more points to send the partisan crowd of 52,893 - including Burt Reynolds, who threw down the pregame spear - home with a victory that at least sounded one-sided.
The biggest testament to the flavor of the first half was that neither team had to punt.
When they finally had to start kicking on fourth down, the game's outcome began to crystallize.
After being stopped on its first drive, FSU's Rick Tuten made his first appearance of the season after his bout with tuberculosis this summer. His 33-yarder gave the Red Raiders possession at their 18-yard line.
That's when FSU's defense showed its first sign of life, stopping Texas tech on three plays to force a punt. The crowd, which had endured more than enough Texas Tech offense to suit its tastes in the first half, gave the FSU defense the loudest ovation of the night.
It got really excited one play later when Stan Shiver led an FSU blitzkrieg on punter Jamie Simmons. Shiver blocked the punt and teammate Bill Ragans recovered it at the Texas Tech 13-yard line.
Four plays later, Dayne Williams scored on a three-yard run to give FSU a 37-16 lead with 8:21 left in the third quarter. With that kind of lead, it became a question of whether FSU's defense could start living up to its preseason hype, something it didn't come close to doing in the first half.
Maybe Reynolds' pregame spear routine did something to the Seminoles. They certainly came out in the right frame of mind offensively.
Starting at their own 33-yard-line, the Seminoles' first play of the 1987 season was a 23-yard pass from McManus to Gainer. If you think that was greedy, you should have seen the next play. McManus heaved it into the end zone 42 yards away, but the only guy with a chance to catch it was Texas tech's Lemuel Stinson.
It slipped off his outstretched fingers, which just delayed the inevitable. Williams gained 11 yards on a draw, then McManus hit Gainer on a post pattern for another 20 yards. That put it at the Red Raiders' 11-yard line and set up the season's first highlights-film catch.
McManus lofted an alley-oop pass deep into the right corner of the end zone. It looked as if it was headed toward Texas Tech's Eric Everett, but Lewis snagged it from him before falling out of bounds.
Schmidt's kick made it 7-0 with 14:05 left in the first quarter.
Texas Tech started at its 28-yard line, moving to its 9 when Deion Sanders was called for a personal foul. One play later Toman then rolled right and threw long to a streaking Wayne Walker, who had gotten behind Sanders on the sideline.
He was brought down at FSU's 1-yard line, and tailback James Gray bounded over for a touchdown two plays later. Scott Segrist's extra-point made it 7-7 with 11:13 left. The fun was just starting, folks. Florida State immediately responded, though its second drive took a bit more than the 55 seconds it took on the first.
The Seminoles' 10-play, 78-yard march started with a 14-yard run by Dexter Carter, followed by a 14-yard pass from McManus to Pat Carter. The Seminoles worked the ball to Texas Tech's 30-yard line, where they faced a fourth and one. Dayne Williams rushed through the line for a 5-yard gain, and there was no stopping the drive from there.
Williams got free for a 15-yard gain from McManus to take it to the 11-yard line. Gainer caught a 9-yard pass, then Williams plowed over from the 2-yard line.
That set up Schmidt's chance to break the school's scoring record. One thing you can almost always take for granted is Schmidt's extra-point ability. But Everett broke through to block it. The score remained 13-7 with 7:24 left in the first quarter.
Was Texas Tech ready to admit defeat? Hardly. It came right back with its own 85-yard drive. A combination of Gray's running and Toman's passing made the Seminole defense look almost impotent.
Gray scored from the 3 on the drive's 14th play, but Segrist then did Schmidt one better by missing the extra point to keep the score 13-13.
Dexter Carter, looking good in his first start at tailback, got FSU's ensuing drive off to a quick start with a 16-yard reception. The drive would eventually die at Texas Tech's 28-yard line, which brought on Schmidt.
This time he didn't disappoint the fans, nailing a 44-yard field goal to give FSU a 16-13 lead with 13:07 left in the first half and giving himself the school's scoring record.
FSU then got the game's first major break. Toman fumbled at this 28-yard line and Eric Hayes recovered for FSU. Carter gained 17 yards, Williams gained a yard, and then McManus scooted 6 yards around right end, diving into the end zone for the touchdown. Schmidt's kick made it 23-13 with 11:20 left in the first half.
You got the idea that eventually somebody was going to start playing defense. Nobody did.
The Red Raiders romped downfield for a 41-yard field goal by Segrist to cut the FSU lead to 23-16. FSU then counter-punched with a 37-yard touchdown pass from McManus to Gainer to make it 30-16 after Schmidt's kick.
There was still 4:19 left in the half. That was time for another three or four scores the way the offenses were playing.
Texas Tech looked ready to move in for another touchdown, but Clifton Winston fumbled and Eric Hayes recovered again at the Seminoles' 31-yard line.
There was 1:14 left in the half, and FSU tried a couple of long passes that were futile. The half finally ended, and the statistics were enough to frighten any defensive coordinator.
FSU had 286 yards total offense and 18 first downs. Texas Tech had 272 yards and 14 first downs.
There was still a half to play, and no defense in sight.

Smith runs over Pirates.
His big night sparks FSU to a 44-3 win.
GREENVILLE, NC - He became a father on Monday night, but some said Sammie Smith really delivered here Saturday night.
Running for 244 yards - second only in Florida State history to Greg Allen's 322 in 1981 against Western Carolina - the swift sophomore tailback scored FSU's first touchdown on an 83-yard scamper.
The defense did much of the rest as the Seminoles romped 44-3 over East Carolina.
Smith was out of action for FSU's opener last week because of a knee injury; his wife, Angie, presented him last Monday with a baby girl, Janay Chantelle.
"They (East Carolina) came out there with great enthusiasm and really played us step for step," said FSU coach Bobby Bowden. "I mean they really got after us in the first half.
"We had planned to really throw the ball against them, but the rain made it awfully scary. We did pass some late in the game, just because I wanted to look at some things. Overall, I was pleased with the way we played. East Carolina fought hard, but we were just a little too much for them, man to man."
FSU led only 16-3 at halftime, but Smith had 166 yards at that point and FSU was on its way.
Now 2-0, the Seminoles play Memphis State in Tallahassee next Saturday night.
On a warm, humid evening following afternoon showers that left the field of Ficklen Stadium a little damp, Florida State got first turn with the ball after the home team won the coin toss.
From the 23, Dexter Carter swept for 10 on the first play. Three snaps later Ronnie Lewis caught a 14-yard pass at the Pirates 47.
On two carries Dayne Williams slammed to a first down at the 35. Then, stopped cold to his left, Williams tried to find running room, but was swarmed over as he retreated. He fumbled, with Ricky Torain recovering for East Carolina at FSU's 49.
Three runs gained yardage to FSU's 37. On third down, quarterback Travis Hunter was racked by Dedrick Dodge when he tried to run, and Terry Warren got the fumble for the Seminoles at their 25.
Interference on a Danny McManus pass to Carter got 12 yards. A short pass to Lawrence Dawsey followed by Carter on the draw for 11 reached the Pirates' 40.
Quickly, Carter ran again - to the 28. But three downs netted only 4 yards, and Derek Schmidt kicked a 41-yard field goal for 3-0 just before a light rain began.
Two third-down passes by Travis, the second to Don Gaylor for 13, led Carolina to its 47.
An option pitch to Reggie McKinney by Travis as he was hit got 16 yards to FSU's 33. After a holding setback, it came to third-and-11 at the 34.
On a screen pass, Anthony Simpson sped for 26 yards to the 8. A fumbled snap netted nothing, and Greg Newell broke up an end-zone pass. Offside against FSU moved Carolina inside the 5, but an option pitch lost a yard. Lining up for a field goal, East Carolina intentionally delayed to draw a 5-yard penalty and obtain a better kicking angle. FSU declined the penalty.
On the first play of the second quarter, Chuck Berleth got the field goal, a 23-yarder that tied it 3-3.
Leroy Butler returned the kickoff 35 yards to the 37, and FSU brought in much bigger backs - Sammie Smith and Marion Butts.
Smith got 9, and Butts 5 more in a swift move to Carolina's 49. On his next three carries, Smith got 7, 6 and 8 yards to lead FSU to a first down at the 23. Soon holding cost FSU 10, back to the 28.
On a fake reverse, Carter got 9 yards. Rain had started to fall harder.
On fourth down at the 19, Schmidt kicked a 36-yard field goal to make the score 6-3.
After a first Richie Andrews kickoff trickled out on the 1-foot line, FSU was penalized 5 to its 35, and Walter Wilson sped to the 50 with a second effort, with Andrews bringing him down.
But linebacker David Palmer, playing a big first half, stopped Hunter cold. Paul McGowan broke up a screen pass. A punt to FSU's 17 followed a faulty exchange that lost a couple of yards.
On a pitchout, Smith cut back into the line and seemed stopped cold as three tacklers hit him. But the big tailback churned through and was away on an 83-yard touchdown run that brought the score to 13-3.
It was the second longest scoring run from scrimmage in FSU history, surpassed only by Larry Key's 96-yarder in 1976 against Virginia Tech.
Just after that, John Hadley pounced on a fumbled East Carolina kickoff return, giving the Seminoles a shot from the Pirates' 20.
Smith slipped on first down. Two more runs left FSU at the 12.
Schmidt kicked his third field goal, a 29-yarder, that lifted the score to 16-3.
Again Andrews kicked out of bounds, and again East Carolina got a good return - to its 43. A 5-yard Tim James run, coupled with a face-mask penalty, got the Pirates to FSU's 41. FSU defenders granted only 4 yards. A punt placed FSU at its 11.
Illegal procedure rubbed out a 44-yard McManus pass to freshman Edgar Bennett.
Three downs left FSU at its 11. Rick Tuten punted out of the end zone, and East Carolina had a crack from FSU's 46 with a little over one minute remaining in the half.
Third down saw Hunter scamper, on a quarterback draw, for 14 yards to FSU's 30. The clock showed eight seconds. A 47-yard try for a field goal by Berleth was short.
Smith, on a fake reverse, rambled 41 yards before getting stopped at the Carolina 29 on the last play of the half.
On 11 runs, Smith had gained 166 first-half yards.
That accounted for all save 90 of FSU's 256 offensive sum at this point. McManus had passed only five times, completed a couple. Carolina had 139 yards, 94 of it running.
The Pirates lost a yard on their opening series of the last half, and punted from their 23 to FSU's 44.
Similarly, the Seminoles gained but a yard on their first endeavor.
As Tuten punted well, a fair-catch endeavor saw FSU's Alphonso Williams rack the return man, and the penalty gave Carolina a start at its 33.
Newell stopped Willie Lewis for a yard loss on a key third-down run, and Deion Sanders wheeled the following punt 17 yards to FSU's 42. Dayne Williams pulled in a McManus pass at the Pirates 41. Two plays later Dexter Carter got 14 to the 24 on a McManus pass. Two runs got but 4, and a pass missed. Schmidt was wide on a 36-yard try for a field goal, leaving it 16-3.
Two plays, and FSU had the ball again as Eric Williams forced a fumble as Hunter ran. Paul McGowan recovered for FSU at the Carolina 24.
Smith whammed to the 19, then the 7 on successive runs up the middle. On a third straight carry, the tailback dug to the 1. But on the fourth play, it was Dayne Williams running off the right side for an easy touchdown. Schmidt's point brought the score to 23-3.
Keeping from his 23, Hunter spun for 20 on a keeper. James, on a 12-yard run, reached FSU's 45.
Hunter was on target with a bomb to a streaking receiver at the 5 - but Alphonso Williams tipped the ball away on a big last-second move. On the next play Hunter fumbled when hit by Newell and Eric Hayes, and it was Felton Hayes recovering for the Seminoles at their 47.
FSU got nothing going, and Tuten punted to the 18. Three plays, and Carolina kicked back - to the FSU 41.
Promptly, McManus went long to a streaking Randy White, who gathered the ball in at the 19 and scored on a 59-yard play. Schmidt's point boosted it to 30-3 as a record home-opener crowd of 33,937 started heading for cars.
Dodge's interception of a long pass at the FSU 22 soon provided another Seminole chance.
Nothing came of it, and the teams traded punts as the quarter ended, FSU gaining the ball at its 33.
On another fake reverse, Smith got loose for a 52-yard ramble to the East Carolina 15.
With Chip Ferguson in at quarterback, FSU reached the 5 and a first down on three short plays. Whereupon, Dexter Carter found daylight and scored on a 5-yard run.
An Anthony Simpson fumble found Eric Hayes claiming the ball for FSU at ECU's 32.
But, following a foul penalty, a Ferguson pass was intercepted.
Carolina moved across midfield, but a McGowan sack of Brad Walsh slapped the Pirates back.
Ferguson directed an 82-yard drive in 13 plays, scoring on a 10-yard run, and the score became 44-3. On the drive, Scott DiMare caught five passes for 54 yards.

FSU gets messy but wins.
Memphis State makes it tough in mud and rain.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - In front 21-0 after three runs with the football, Florida State fought off Memphis State - and its own errors - to win 41-24 here Saturday night.
Dexter Carter, accounting for 105 rushing yards in the first quarter alone, scored three touchdowns.
The sophomore tailback had 311 all-purpose yards - running for 135 in 13 carries, catching four passes for 63 and returning four kickoffs for 113.
Six turnovers contributed mightily to it being somewhat more of a challenge then FSU anticipated. Sammie Smith, such a hero after 244 yards last week against East Carolina, fumbled three times.
At the start, Memphis State received after winning the coin toss on a wet evening that followed relatively heavy afternoon rain.
From the 24, two runs lost 2, and a pass got little, Memphis State's first punt had FSU at its 32.
Right away defender Tory Epps ripped through to sack Danny McManus at the 25. But a screen pass to Dexter Carter dot 25 on the next play.
Pat Carter grabbed a 10-yard pass at the Tiger 40.
Soon, another screen - to Dexter Carter - netted 12 to the 28.
After two passes missed, a draw play - Dexter Carter carrying - surprised the visitors, picking up 23 to the 5. Then Dexter Carter scored from the 4 on a pitchout.
Following a kickoff return to its 22, Memphis again was short after three plays, and punted to FSU's 28.
FSU overcame a holding call with a 13-yard pass to Pat Carter, followed by gains of 6 and 19 by Dexter Carter - the latter on a McManus pass.
After failing on two passes, McManus found Ronald Lewis with a 36-yarder at the 1.
Dayne Williams got the touchdown, and it was 14-0.
Memphis State changed quarterbacks - switching from Rusty Trail to Tim Jones - but again it was three downs and out as Paul McGowan and Eric Krohn spurred a defensive charge - the latter sacking Jones for minus-2 on third down.
Deion Sanders sped 63 yards to a touchdown on the punt return - but it was nullified by clipping, and FSU started at its 25.
Second down there, and Carter seemed trapped after taking a pitchout to the right, but he struggled loose, cut left, got a block from McManus, and raced 74 yards to the 1 on a spectacular play.
Again, Williams got the touchdown and it was 21-0.
At last the Tigers got a first down - on an interference call against Stan Shiver at the Memphis 38. Three plays from there netted only a yard, and once more the Tigers punted.
From the 25, Sammie Smith - in the game for the first time - got 12. Three more Smith runs reached the Memphis 49 as the quarter ended.
But after Tom O'Malley grabbed a pass at the 36, Memphis defenders stacked up Smith and Marion Butts on successive runs.
A 16-yard Gerald White run got Memphis to its 40. Sammy Seals caught a 15-yard pass, and White runs led to a first down at the 33.
But McGowan caught Jones for a loss of 6.
On fourth and 12 at the 35, John Butler tried a 52-yard field goal. He missed, but got a second chance as FSU jumped offside. Whereupon, Butler missed from 47 yards.
A first-down McManus pass - apparently tipped by a teammate - was intercepted at the 33 by Troy Myer.
A third-down pass for 15 gained FSU's 18. Three passes got nothing, with Eric Wiliams breaking up a third-down throw at the goal line. Butler's 35-yard field goal made it 21-3.
Carter wheeled the kickoff 35 yards to FSU's 44. Lewis was open deep as McManus started with a bomb, but the ball was overthrown.
Smith fumbled after gaining 9, and Marlon Brown covered the ball for Memphis at its 47.
It came to fourth and one at FSU's 44. Wayne Pryor was stopped just short as Alphonso Williams and Sheldon Thompson led the defensive charge.
Rain that started earlier in the quarter was falling steadily now.
Smith soon got 13, and Butts 8 in a quick move to the Memphis 29. But again Smith fumbled, and again Memphis recovered - this time at its 25, with Mike Nettles covering.
A Jones keeper led to the 50.
As safety Greg Newell fell, Charles Wilson - the Tallahassee Godby grad - pulled in a Jones bomb for a touchdown. The play covered 50 yards, and suddenly it was a 21-10 game.
Pn another fine runback, Carter returned the kickoff 25 yards to FSU's 39. A pair of 8-yard passes, yo tight ends Pat Carter and Reggie Johnson, keyed a move to the Memphis 35. An interference call, as McManus threw to Randy White at the goal line, gained the 20.
On third down, Randall Cooper - the guilty guy on the interference call - broke up a touchdown pass to Lewis, tipping it away. Schmidt's 36-yard field goal made it 24-10 with 22 seconds left in the half.
With five seconds left, Eric Williams intercepted a Jones pass at the FSU 21. Carter got 14 running on the half's last play.
Abruptly, it got sticky in the third quarter.
A second-down McManus pass, following the kickoff, skipped off the hands of Lewis. Nettles intercepted and raced 41 yards for a touchdown that narrowed it to 24-17.
Ill turns continued.
Carter returned the kickoff 39 yards - but fumbled, and the Tigers' Kenny Duffy recovered at the 50.
Two runs reached FSU's 39, but defenders called a halt there. But Jeff Fite's punt left FSU in a hole at its 1.
Three runs left the Seminoles inches short at the 11. Rick Tuten punted 49 yards to the Memphis 42.
Backed to its 31 after holding, Memphis got out on successive penalties - one for roughing the quarterback, another for grabbing a face mask.
At the 50, Eric Hayes forced a fumble out of quarterback Jones with a hard tackle, and Kevin Grant claimed the ball for FSU at the Memphis 43.
Lewis caught a pass at the 30, but two plays later Smith fumbled for a third time. Reggie Dubose got this one for the Tigers at their 25.
But Memphis passes were futile. Sanders returned the punt to midfield, but a personal-foul assessment knocked FSU back to its 37.
An 18-yard pass to Lewis followed by a 17-yarder to O'Malley placed FSU at the 30. Then Herb Gainer caught one at the 19.
Williams pounded to the 10. After Carter was caught for a yard loss, Williams got the first down at the 7.
On a pitchout to the right, Carter broke a couple of tackles and got a touchdown that made it 31-17 with 3:19 left in the quarter.
On the running of Jones, Memphis got a pair of first downs, to its 43. But a hard rush by Krohn enabled Shiver to sack the quarterback on third down. That brought a punt, and a new FSU beginning at its 23 as the quarter ended.
Williams runs led to the 44. On third down, Lewis snared a 30-yard McManus shot to the 26.
Memphis held, and FSU settled for a 41-yard Schmidt field goal. The scoreboard read 34-17.
Helped by a personal-foul call, Memphis probed to its 44, where it came to fourth-and-one. On a pitchout, White lost 3. FSU started at the Memphis 41.
Chip Ferguson, on his first at quarterback, passed to Lewis at the 30. Two plays later, Pat Carter caught a 17-yarder at the 9.
After losing 5 on a run, Carter collared a 14-yard scoring pass from Ferguson, and the score became 41-17 with 8 minutes remaining.
Memphis State got a touchdown in the final seconds on Elgin Perkins' 5-yard run with a pitchout that followed a 28-yard pass to the 4.
It was the Seminoles' fifth straight game on a wet field and, in a sense, easily the messiest.

Solid-gold avalanche.
Seminoles pour it on Spartans.
EAST LANSING, MI - It was about Tuesday that Bobby Bowden delivered a short oration to the troops.
"Get that danged reverse cranked up," he told his Florida State coaches and players.
The Seminoles put that reverse in high gear here Saturday, but it was spectacular defense that put them in overdrive. And Michigan State - the same crew that ran over Southern Cal (27-13) on this field in an opener - fell 31-3.
It was not as easy as that. Michigan State's own unusual defense, designed to stop anybody's running game, put a chokehold on the nation's No. 1-ranked offensive unit much of the early way.
"You cannot run the ball on Michigan State," praised Bowden. "As good as they play that thing, you better be able to make them slow that pursuit down a little bit - or you're in trouble."
The reverse - that some say is Bowden's very favorite play - was called on the game's first play. Lawrence Dawsey swept for 23 yards. On an early play of the last half, Ronnie Lewis ran it for 56 and a touchdown that opened the gates.
"I hope I never see that defense of theirs again," said Bowden. He will. Michigan State plays in Tallahassee next Sept. 24.
This was a game FSU led by a bare 7-3 at halftime.
Then FSU's defense, on four of five possessions from the start of the second half, got the ball back at the Michigan State 25, 11, 44 and 48, sending a message: "See what you can do with that, offense!"
Well, actually, the offense got just three points out of that, but Lewis on that 56-yard reverse had managed that touchdown after the Seminoles started at their own 44. Once again, quarterback Danny McManus scored a telling block on a scoring run.
All of that made the score 17-3. Later, FSU whacked out two more touchdowns - and maybe partially because Michigan State defenders were keeping an eye peeled for those reverses.
So it id that Florida State is 4-0 for the fifth time in Bowden's 12th season. In the 70th road game of his time, Bowden's record for these became 44-24-2. A Big Ten team has never played in Tallahassee, but never mind - Bowden has beaten representatives of this vaunted league four out of five times.
It mattered not much that a Florida State team that had led the nation with a 500-yards-plus average got 367 here.
What mattered more was Lorenzo White, who just might really be the college game's best runner, was checked on 84 yards in 22 carries as the Spartans netted just 215, and didn't really hurt anybody.
"Contain - contain - contain!" was the repeated word in FSU workouts, and a defensive plan focused on containing slippery quarterback Bobby McAllister and White, not allowing neither to get outside, an area where each is awfully dangerous.
"McAllister has great speed, and he does have a strong arm," said defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews. "But we noticed he was not nearly as effective a passer when he was not on the run. We tried to keep him inside."
Apparent leaders of a big defensive endeavor were noseguard Odell Haggins (11 tackles) and linebacker Paul McGowan (9). Three times Haggins caught runners for losses, and McGowan twice had tackles for losses. Six times the Seminoles sacked Spartan quarterbacks - once each by Haggins and McGowan, once each by tackles Eric Hayes and Eric Krohn, by linebackers David Palmer and Terry Warren.
Remarkably, for all of that, Michigan State controlled the football, running 77 plays to FSU's 65, and had the ball approximately 9 ½ more minutes than Florida State. In the early going, there seemed a risk of FSU's defense being overly burdened.
And now comes a showdown here Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in a nationally televised CBS game - a key matchup with powerful Miami.
"I can't tell, I can't tell," protested Bowden when pressed on the question of how good his team may be. "We got a ball game coming up that will tell us something."
But many Michigan Staters had seen enough. Thousands among the 76,787 fans - roughly the population of this almost-picturesque little city - who packed Spartan Stadium left early. Maybe to pick some of the cherries, apples, plums and blueberries that abound around here.
"We got beat in the running game, and we got beat in the passing game," said losing coach George Perles.
"We got beat by a better team - that is how simple it is. I said before the game Florida State has the best collection of athletes. They were a lot better than us today. We knew their whole team was quick. They could be a great team at the end of the year."
Despite Dawsey's neat opening run, Florida State looked not so great on its first several possessions. As the second quarter opened, with the score 0-0, Florida State found itself backed inside its 2 following a Greg Montgomery punt - he was punting all day, averaging 41 yards on 12, not counting the one Eric Williams blocked.
Rick Tuten, who averaged 35, got FSU out of that hole with a 46-yard boot, and two penalties quickly slapped the Spartans back to their 29.
Right after that, a thing or two started happening. On Montgomery's next kick, Deion Sanders wheeled it 53 yards to the Spartan 38. Sanders had a dandy afternoon - returning seven punts 99 yards and intercepting a pass.
In five plays McManus had the Seminoles ahead 7-0. A pass to Lewis for 17 was followed by one to Dexter Carter - 20 yards to the 1. Dayne Williams scored easily.
Michigan State moved on passes, including a couple to tight end Mike Sargent, and got a 35-yard field goal out of John Langeloh.
Andrews' suggested defensive plan pretty well turned the tight end free, with the Seminoles focusing on bigger game. "He wasn't going to beat us," said Andrews. And neither was any aspect of Michigan State's passing game on this day. On four completions of 21 efforts, sandwiched around six sacks and an interception, the home team got just 43 yards.
An early opportunity to expand that 7-3 lead came in the first half when Haggins forced a fumble out of McAllister, and Sheldon Thompson recovered at the Spartan 25. Nothing came of it as Todd Krumm intercepted an unwise McManus pass over the middle.
But next time FSU got the ball, McManus dealt it to Lewis on the reverse, gave him the big block at the corner, and after the 56-yarder, it was 14-3.
It became 17-3 on Schmidt's 21-yard field goal after Eric Williams blocked a punt that set up the Seminoles at the Spartan 11.
In the fourth quarter, FSU moved on a smooth 68-yard drive to a touchdown that came on an 8-yard McManus pass to Lewis.
A Sanders interception soon had the Seminoles knocking again, at the Michigan State 38. A screen pass to Sammie Smith did the trick, getting 25 yards and a final touchdown with more than 7 minutes remaining.
Though FSU managed 174 rushing yards, Michigan State virtually neutralized the dangerous tailback tandem of Dexter Carter (28 yards) and Sammie Smith (19 yards) as each ran nine times. One thing the Spartans were doing defensively was giving big tackle Pat Tomberlin heavy attention wherever he lined up.
"It is amazing how bad you can play when your defense is good," said Bowden, forgetting for the moment the merit of Michigan State's own defense as he indicated some displeasure with an attack that, going in, had led the nation.
As many came up rosy for the Seminoles, they came off the artificial turf with no apparent injuries of significance.
"We're going to need all the healthy bodies we can get," said one coach.

Kick Yourself, FSU.
Seminoles' missed conversions and Miami two-pointers settle it
26-25.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Florida State played Miami better than the world of football thought it could.
It also played Miami in ways that were worse than anybody thought.
Florida State's good kicking game went crazy. Its spectacular defense turned suddenly vulnerable.
And Miami, behind the poise and passing of sophomore quarterback Steve Walsh, dealt a stinging 26-25 defeat to the Seminoles in broad Saturday daylight before a record Campbell Stadium crowd of 62,561 and millions in a national-television audience.
Behind 10-3 at halftime - and 19-3 with 2:45 left in the third quarter, Miami offensively came alive on lightning assaults by Walsh.
First he hit Melvin Bratton with a 49-yard touchdown pass over the middle, then Michael Irvin with a 25-yard scoring strike over the middle, then - finally, with 2:22 to play - Irvin again on the sideline with a throw that he turned into a 73-yard payoff.
All three came on third-down plays.
After the first two touchdowns, Walsh threw two[point passes to Brian Blades, then Warren Williams, tying the game 19-19 with 11:39 remaining. After the final touchdown, Greg Cox kicked the point that proved decisive.
"We played a heck of a football team," said Miami coach Jimmy Johnson. "But I was proud of our guys - they would not quit!"
It was so. All of it.
Brent Musburger of CBS had asked Johnson prior to the game about the possibility of a two-point play should it come to a question of kicking for a tie.
"I told him we were not very good at two-point conversions," said Johnson.
Few teams are. But on this day Miami was.
In the final moments, Florida State drove 83 yards in eight plays, scoring on Ronnie Lewis' splendid 18-yard catch of a McManus pass. Forty-two seconds remained.
After first indicating a bid for a tying kick, Florida State called a timeout and went for two. The pass failed, as McManus appeared to underthrow tight end Pat Carter.
"I wish I hadn't, but I did," said Coach Bobby Bowden later of his decision to go for two. He saud he changed him mind because kicker Derek Schmidt had already missed two relatively short field goals and an extra point.
In a 31-game series that FSU now trails 18-13, Miami won for the ninth time in 10 Tallahassee tries. It was, moreover, the fifth time Florida State has fallen to Miami by a single point.
In a battle of the nation's third- and fourth-ranked teams, Miami had entered the game a three-point favorite. Not so many thought FSU could move the ball on Miami's acclaimed defense.
But move it Florida State did. All day.
With tailback Sammie Smith starting, and pounding for 189 yards in 30 runs, FSU lashed Miami defenders for 426 yards. Held to just 82 at halftime, Miami finished with 306, including 254 on Walsh passing. Though he hit on just 13 of 29, you could write a book after his three big ones.
One of the game's most astonishing facts was that FSU controlled the ball, 84 plays to 53, and it had possession of the ball more than 40 of the 60 minutes. But, in that stunning sequence that started in the third quarter, Miami ate up the yards like a hungry giant.
Miami's chance for such a fantastic flurry came after some startling FSU developments - otherwise, the Seminoles would have this one socked away.
An ill wind blew - literally - and Schmidt, the nation's most productive kicker entering this season, had trouble all day. Bowden said the wind blew on-course Schmidt kicks outside the goalposts.
"If you had told me they were going to beat us on the kicking game," said Bowden, "I would have said you were out of your mind."
It was not Schmidt. Miami took an early three-point lead after Marty Riggs, the snapper on long kicks, snapped before quarterback Danny McManus, the holder, and Schmidt were ready for a field-goal attempt from the Miami 23. Riggs said he thought he heard the "set" signal for the snap and responded. The ball sailed 52 yards, giving Miami position at the FSU 26. Cote soon booted a 29-yard field goal for a 3-0 Miami lead.
Except for that 51 yards - credited as a rushing-game loss - Florida State's offensive total would have been more impressive.
Florida State recovered quickly from that small deficit, driving 80 yards as Smith broke a 54-yard ramble to the Miami 17.
At that point, Smith had 103 yards on 11 runs.
On the first play of the second quarter, Dayne Williams scored from the 1.
A 17-yard Deion Sanders punt return put FSU in position at Miami's 48. Florida State worked the ball down to the 20, and settled for a 10-3 lead on a 36-yard Schmidt field goal.
On FSU's first series of the last half, a drive to the Miami 12 went awry when Schmidt's 29-yard try for three was wide right.
But when Miami punted, Martin Mayhew ripped through to block Jeff Feagle's boot, and Alphonso Williams picked it up at about the 5 and scored an easy touchdown.
Whereupon, Schmidt missed the extra-point kick, leaving it 16-3.
A 34-yard Sanders punt return placed FSU at the Miami 44. A roughing-the-passer penalty on outside linebacker Danny Stubbs helped FSU to a first down at the Miami 12.
With 2:45 left in the quarter, Schmidt kicked a 25-yard field goal that made it 29-3.
It seemed over.
But in a 76-yard, six-play drive, accomplished in less than two minutes, Miami cut it to 19-11 after Walsh hit Bratton with the 49-yarder and Blades with the two-pointer.
When McManus, on the first series of the last quarter, threw a screen pass, Stubbs moved in for an interception that gave Miami the ball at FSU's 40.
"He made a great play," said McManus. "The screen was there. We would have got a big gain out of it."
Six more plays, and Miami had it tied following Walsh's 26-yarder to Irvin and the two-pointer to Williams.
Again, Florida State drove - 59 yards to the 14 - but Schmidt's 31-yard attempt for three was again wide right.
Here came the Seminoles again, slashing to the Miami 16 - where a faulty exchange from center resulted in a fumble at the 11.
Given that reprieve, Miami moved to what proved its winning touchdown, the 73-yarder to Irvin.
Still time for a final Florida State move that came up a point short.
"We threw away more chances." Said Bowden, "then we have in a very long time."

The Big Easy.
FSU runs over Southern Miss to win 61-10.
HATTIESBURG, MS - Southern Mississippi, a proud sort of football team, started playing the game 70 seasons ago, in 1917.
Never had it lost a game like it lost Saturday - to Florida State 61-10. And a sad Homecoming it was, for so many in the crowd of 25,803.
More than 10 years ago, these Golden Eagles lost one 48-0 at East Carolina, but in the years since only one team - Florida State - had really blown it away. Only a dozen teams in all of major-college football had won a higher percentage of games than Southern Mississippi over the last 50 years.
A 65-6 victor at Louisville only a week ago, Southern had won 12 consecutive home games.
"We were hot, and things went our way some," said FSU coach Bobby Bowden.
When someone mentioned it was Southern's worst-ever loss, Bowden said: "Well, they once gave us one of the worst ones we ever had, didn't they?"
It was so. In 1981, a Southern team, led by Reggie Collier, slammed the Seminoles in Tallahassee 58-14.
But that was FSU's lone loss to Southern in Bowden's time, and he has beaten this sturdy-enough opponent seven of eight times, including four in Hattiesburg.
It was 14-0 on this pleasant sunshiny Saturday with the game not five minutes old, 31-10 at the half, and 45-10 with a quarter to go. The explosive Seminoles ran up 602 yards, 388 of it rushing against a foe that figured pretty good stopping such.
Ranked No. 6 nationally last week, FSU moves toward Saturday's game against Louisville with a 5-1 record. Then comes an open date before Homecoming against Tulane.
Florida State took charge at the start, moving 76 yards in nine plays to a 7-0 lead. After Danny McManus picked Southern with passes, Sammie Smith tore up the middle on a draw play for 30 and a touchdown.
Three times FSU scored on the draw. Dexter Carter got a second on a 39-yarder, Victor Floyd another on a 20-yarder. Three scoring draw plays from three different tailbacks!
They do have some talent," commented Jim Carmody, the losing coach.
Florida State might have scored on the game's first play. But the "Bowden-rooskie" did not go.
"The play was for Danny McManus to fake to Sammie going off tackle, then hide the ball before throwing it to Ronnie Lewis. "Looked like it would have worked. But they had a corner-blitz called. And you would never expect a corner-blitz in that situation. Danny was lucky to be able to throw the ball away on the play."
McManus came right back with three completions that paved Smith's scoring burst up the middle on the draw.
"We felt they played running games pretty well, and we had to open up with some passes," said Bowden.
A whole lot of opening-up, for pass or run, once again came from a tough corps of offensive linemen, generally led by the two Pats, tight end Carter and tackle Tomberlin.
"The big difference in this game was our offensive line dominating," said Bowden. "Wayne McDuffie is doing a great coaching job getting the execution out of this group." And the defensive coaching staff is doing a great job, among other things, of intimidating opponents about every time they try to punt.
It became 14-0 when freshman linebacker Kelvin Smith blocked Southern's first punt, and Bill Ragans covered it in the end zone for a touchdown. In the second quarter, FSU blocked another - Smith and Allen Stewart each getting a piece of the ball - and that led to a field goal following position at the Southern 9.
Florida State might have put this one out of sight early. Stan Shiver came up with the first of his two interceptions on a day the Seminoles swiped five. (Tracy Sanders, Deion Sanders and Corien Freeman each had one.)
But nothing came of the first interception opportunity, and soon Southern stirred the crowd with a 69-yard scoring run by Reginald Warnsley.
"Somebody went to sleep," said Bowden. "He cut outside. It should have been no gain."
A couple of clips briefly stymied the Seminoles - accounting for 30 of the 85 penalty yards they drew for the day.
But late in a long opening quarter McManus mounted another drive. A 40-yard Dayne Williams run helped. The touchdown came on a 6-yard McManus toss to Pat Carter.
Williams ran a half-dozen times for 54 yards, Dexter Carter eight for 74 and Smith 16 for 142.
In the early going of the second quarter, Southern cut it to 21-10 on a 44-yard field goal by Chris Scroka.
At about this point, Florida State moved steadily away.
After Carter's 39-yard draw for a TD, it was 28-10.
And on Schmidt's 21-yard field goal that followed a second blocked punt, it was 31-10. With two field goals and seven extra points, Schmidt moved closer still to a national scoring record.
In the third quarter, after the defense held on fourth and one at its 42, FSU scored again, this time on Floyd's 20-yard draw.
When Floyd fumbled a little later, Southern Miss had a shot from FSU's 20 - then the 5, following a penalty. An interception at the 1 by Tracy Sanders stopped that.
Whereupon, FSU drove 99 yards to a touchdown that came on Williams' yard run.
A 46-yard Schmidt field goal soon raised the score to 48-10.
Then Chip Ferguson was in to direct a push capped by a 14-yard scoring throw to Floyd.
Peter Tom Willis followed Ferguson, passing 12 yards to Herb Gainer for the final touchdown.
Among FSU defenders, Paul McGowan, in on a dozen tackles, was among the stickouts.
But on a day when FSU ran 89 plays - 18 more than Southern - it was much like a track meet, with a whole lot of Seminoles having their good moments.

Semi-Tough.
Louisville makes the Seminoles sweat a little for a 32-9 victory.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Shaking off an erratic start, Florida State whacked out 32-9 victory here Saturday night.
In a mildly surprising turn of events, Louisville used the strong passing of quarterback Jay Gruden to control the ball much of the way.
That, coupled with FSU's tendency to err, had 53,144 Campbell Stadium fans looking at one another in consternation.
With the notable assistance of a blocked punt by Alphonso Williams, the Seminoles managed an 18-3 halftime lead. But Louisville didn't do a whole lot of punting in this game.
At the start FSU was a little jumpy - Louisville gaining a first down on an opening series when an outside linebacker leaped offside as the Cardinals lined up to punt.
But FSU defenders granted not an inch on the subsequent series, and Louisville punted to the Seminole 28.
Six straight runs, including three in a row by Dayne Williams, reached the Louisville 45.
On a fake reverse, Sammie Smith broke an early tackle, streaked down the sideline, cut back at the 5, and got the opening touchdown. Derek Schmidt missed the kick, leaving it 6-0.
Jay Gruden's pass to Deon Booker for 16 led to the Louisville 40.
When the Cardinals punted, Deion Sanders lost it, and David Miller recovered for Louisville at FSU's 27.
George Williams' reception for 14 yards, coupled with a face-mask penalty, quickly propelled the visitors to the 6.
A run and two passes netted a yard. On fourth down, following an offside penalty, Ronnie Bell kicked a 27-yard field goal for 6-3.
Dexter Carter's kickoff return gave FSU position at the 35. But FSU's odd jerkiness continued, with a faulty exchange on first down resulting in a 2-yard loss. Two plays later, Rick Tuten's punt placed Louisville at its 26.
Three runs got 15. On third down, Gruden hit Anthony Cummings with an 18-yarder at FSU's 41. Promptly, Chad Fortune gathered in a 28-yard throw at the 13.
An FSU offside moved the ball to the 8. But linebacker Paul McGowan stopped a run, and two passes missed.
Lining up for a fourth-down try for a field goal, following a procedure penalty, Louisville faked it, with holder Eric Lawton rearing up, then throwing an end-zone pass to Williams - who dropped the ball.
On the opening play of the second quarter, Florida State got its first pass completion - a 6-yarder to Herb Gainer for a first down at the 27.
That was it, however, as more McManus passes failed. Tuten's 44-yard punt left Louisville at its 32.
Consecutive 13-yard passes to Rodney Knighton and Williams attained FSU's 40. Two plays later Hamilton caught a 14-yarder at the 20.
Terry Warren tore through to sack Gruden at the 27. On third down Hamilton grabbed a pass and sailed to the 3 - but a holding call on Mike McKinney nullified the shot. Another futile pass, then a punt into the end zone.
A 16-yard McManus toss to Gainer gained some room. Three more plays and Ronnie Lewis caught a 26-yarder at Louisville's 43. Dexter Carter ran for 10 and Marion Butts for 8. Carter's running got 8 more, to the 18.
On fourth down, Schmidt's 34-yard field goal made it 9-3 with 6:06 left in the half.
On a Louisville punt soon after, Alonso Williams ripped in to block it, and FSU had a crack from the Cardinals' 26.
One play boosted it to 15-3, McManus finding Gainer with a 26-yard pass in a corner of the end zone. Going for two points, FSU failed on a pitchout to Smith.
Gruden's 24-yard pass to Williams reached the Louisville 45. A fourth-down sneak by Gruden got another first down, at FSU's 45.
John Hadley's interception of a Gruden pass gained the ball again for FSU, at its 42.
Short passes to Edgar Bennett and Gainer reached the 34. On a draw, Smith slipped to the 21.
After three passes got nothing, Schmidt kicked a 37-yard field goal for 18-3 with 16 seconds remaining in the half.
With representatives from seven bowls - Sugar, Cotton, Fiesta, Citrus, Hall of Fame, Gator, Peach - on hand, the Seminoles had perhaps impressed few at this point. While Florida State had 218 yards, Louisville had only 20 less, with 164 of its 188 yards on 29 Gruden attempts that brought a dozen completions.
FSU came out running in the second half, with Smith bouncing for 11 to the 33 on the first play. Hard running by Dayne Williams led to a first down at the Louisville 36.
It came to fourth and two, with Smith popping for 15 to the 15.
Taking a pitchout, Dexter Carter got the touchdown from 9 yards out. Schmidt's kick brought it to 25-3.
A 21-yard toss to Cummings got Louisville to its 48. Williams grabbed a 12-yard pass at the 36. On fourth down at the 32 Louisville could not connect on a pass.
Gainer hauled in a 20-yard pass just over the 50. A short toss to Gainer, coupled with a Williams run, gained the 34.
With Lewis, on a reverse, losing 10 yards, FSU soon punted.
Three straight Gruden completions, totaling 31 yards, got Louisville to the FSU 49 as the last quarter started.
Pass interference called on Martin Mayhew got 15 more for the Cardinals.
Third down there, and outside linebacker Kevin Grant dogged Gruden and sacked him at the 50 - a loss of 15.
Strong running by Floyd overcame a 15-yard illegal-block penalty, moving FSU and the ball from the 18 to 35. Terry Anthony caught a 15-yard pass at midfield.
After Bennett got 12, Floyd ran three straight times - to the 17.
On a pitchout, Floyd scored from the 13. Schmidt's kick made it 32-3.
On the drive, Floyd carried eight times for 63 of the 82 yards.
Gruden's 46-yard bomb to Eric Broomfield reached FSU's 36. On the next play, Fortune took an 18-yarder at the 18.
Whereupon, Gruden threw four straight incompletions as FSU defenders aggressively covered receivers.
With Chip Ferguson in at quarterback, FSU swept across midfield, with Floyd's 18 yard scamper a key. FSU drew a holding penalty, but Ferguson regained it with a 32-yard throw to Anthony.
A third-down pass was swiped, however, by Louisville's Patrick Fitzgerald at the 19.
With 1:07 left, Louisville got a touchdown following a 39-yard punt return by Hamilton. A foul penalty helped the Cardinals to FSU's 36.
Gruden hit Fortune with a 21-yard pass at the 15. Then the quarterback kept and ran to the 3. Deon Booker got the touchdown.
After a try for two failed, it was 32-9.

Riding a Wave.
FSU celebrates Homecoming with a rout of Tulane.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Scoring on nine of 10 series in one stretch, Florida State's hard-charging football team clobbered Tulane 73-14 here Saturday night.
Now 7-1 for this increasingly interesting season, the Seminoles moved into an apparent national-television date - CBS, 2:30 p.m. - at Auburn next Saturday.
In this 41st Florida State Homecoming, a turnout of 53,210 in Campbell Stadium saw their Seminoles win one of those old-grad affairs for the 31st time - including 12 under Coach Bobby Bowden.
Never had any team scored this many points on Tulane. The previous high was 63.
By the grace of Florida State fumbles, the Green Wave, now 4-4, preserved a lengthy scoring record. This made it 112 straight games Tulane has managed at least some points.
"I just hope we can keep up with them," Bowden had said during the week. Tulane had gone in with a 34,7 scoring average, with the nation's 14th-ranked offense.
Only in the early going was there any doubt. Tulane took a 7-0 lead after Sammie Smith fumbled a pitchout on the Seminoles' first scrimmage play.
With Tulane's porous defense apparently concentrating on stopping FSU running, Danny McManus cut the visitors into bits with his passes.
McManus retired halfway through the third quarter, with FSU in front 59-7.
For Bowden, this one was the 170th victory of his career. With 97 at Florida State, he has a chance to hit 100 with the Seminoles this season.
Tulane opened this game with one of Bobby Bowden's favorite tricks - a reverse, with Maurice Nelson breaking for 13 yards from the 20. A sort pass to Marc Zeno, coupled with a pair of runs, brought another first down, at the 46.
Quarterback Terrance Jones found too much defense on a run, then a pass. A Tulane coverage man kicked a punt that might have died inside the FSU 5 over the goal line, and FSU got the ball at the 20.
On the first play, Sammie Smith fumbled a pitch, and Tulane's Troy Wetzel covered it.
Second down at the 17, and a broken play - with Zeno wiggling free in the end zone, and pulling in a Jones toss for a touchdown that put Tulane up 7-0.
With Smith stopped cold by Tulane defenders on his next two runs, FSU punted - short to the Tulane 43.
In two slashing runs, Tulane got in position at FSU's 36. Whereupon, Odell Haggins ripped through to sack Jones for a loss of 8. A screen to Maurice Allen got 9. On fourth down, Todd Wiggins tried a 52-yard field goal that was short.
Danny McManus promptly put a 25-yard pass into the hands of Pat Carter at the Tulane 39. Dexter Carter slipped through for 9, and Dayne Williams led on to the 25.
Soon Herb Gainer grabbed a 19-yard pass at the 3. Two plays later Williams scored from the 1, and it became a 7-7 deadlock.
On a slick last-second pitchout, Mike Pierce got 16 yards to Tulane's 36. Three more plays netted not enough, and the Green Wave punted to FSU's 25.
Marion Butts, on a pass followed by a short run, got 15 shortly before the quarter closed.
On a screen pass, Smith shot through, weaving around defenders, and sped 57 yards to a touchdown that put FSU up 14-7.
On Tulane's next play from scrimmage, Jones had the time, but Eric Hayes had the answer - tipping a pass that linebacker David Palmer intercepted at the Wave 32.
Hitting Ronnie Lewis rambling down the sidelines, McManus made it two touchdowns on successive plays, and FSU led 21-7 after the 32-yard payoff.
Jerome McIntosh fumbled after a 20-yard reception, but Zeno was there to recover and place Tulane at FSU's 44.
Alphonso Williams stopped a runner cold on a pitchout, and Tulane could not penetrate.
When Wiggins tried a 46-yard field goal, FSU's Alan Stewart appeared to tip the ball, and the endeavor failed.
Three straight turns by Smith with the ball gained 20 yards to the 50.
A 28-yard pickup by Dexter Carter on a McManus pass reached the 16.
Third down at the 20, following a clipping call, and McManus hit Herb Gainer in the end zone for a touchdown and a 28-7 lead.
Pass interference, called on Deion Sanders, got Tulane to its 40. But outside linebacker Kevin Grant was all over Jones, forcing a poor pitchout - with Paul McGowan recovering that fumble for FSU at the Tulane 38.
On a reverse, Lewis zipped to the 10.
From the 1, on third down, fullback Williams powered over for his 10th touchdown of the season.
One scrimmage play later, Sanders intercepted a Jones pass, returned it for 14 to the Tulane 26.
Smith pulled in a pass at the five, but fumbled when hit, Lonnie Martz recovering for Tulane.
Three plays later, a David Palmer tackle brought a fumble that teammate Shelton Thompson got at the 12.
A holding assessment cost 10, and that series ended with a 33-yard Derek Schmidt field goal, and now it was 38-7.
A 42-yard Jones bomb to Pierce reached FSU's 26.
But no more. Hayes sacked Jones on second down, and that pretty well closed out the half.
At this point, Florida State had stacked 329, with all save 80 coming on passes as McManus hit on 13 of 16 shots for 249.
Tulane showed 186, with Jones connecting on 10 of 18 for 128.
One last-half scrimmage play and the score jumped to 45-7.
Dayne Williams had wheeled 19 yards with a short kickoff, to the FSU 45.
Smith took a pitchout, popped away from a couple of would-be tacklers and streaked 55 yards for a touchdown.
Hemmed up at its 3, following hot defensive work by Palmer and a 17-yard Bart Schuchts sack of Jones, Tulane faked the punt, with Deron Smith running for not enough.
Taking over at the Tulane 15, FSU scored in two plays - the second an 8-yard run by Smith.
Appearing almost helpless now before a swarming FSU defense, Tulane punted - and Sanders returned it 49 yards for a touchdown, and it became 59-7.
Helped by a 15-yard penalty and a 16-yard Jones scramble, Tulane maneuvered across midfield. Nothing came of it.
With McManus retiring for the night, with statistics of 14-of-17 for 256 yards and three touchdowns, Chip Ferguson came in at quarterback.
Fifteen plays from the 20, mostly runs by Carter and Smith, brought more points with Dayne Williams getting his third touchdown of the game from the 1. Mercifully, the movement consumed about half the minutes of the third quarter.
That made the three-game record of McManus against Tulane 44 completions of 61 passes for 588 yards - with five touchdowns passing, three running.
On the last play of the quarter, Sanders fumbled a Tulane punt, and the visitors had opportunity at the FSU 38.
A Jones run for 8, coupled with a foul penalty, led to the 10. Following another penalty, Adams scored from the five, and the score in the early moments of the final quarter was 66-14.
From the 29, FSU continued to move. A short pass to Randy White led over midfield, and a Marion Butts run for 25 led to the 20. But Schmidt was wide on a 37-yard try for a field goal.
With the assistance of a Lawrence Dawsey reverse for 25 yards, FSU got into position for a late touchdown, Dexter Carter scoring on a 16-yard run with a bit over a minute left.

How 'Bout A Fiesta?
Seminoles take Auburn for a 34-6 cakewalk.
AUBURN, AL - A piece of cake.
And call it double chocolate, with whipped cream - just what Bobby Bowden would have ordered for his 58th birthday today.
In charge early on, his Florida State team slapped around previously unbeaten Auburn 34-6 here Saturday in a manner that few thought was possible.
A packed stadium of 85,170 witnessed Auburn's destruction.
So, too, did millions viewing a CBS national telecast - a most fitting audience as Derek Schmidt became the leading scorer in all the glorious, 100-years-plus history of college football.
With two field goals and four extra points, the senior raised his career total to 370. That broke the 368 mark set by Luis Zendejas at Arizona State three seasons ago.
"We played good," said Bowden simply.
The football world will so testify, most notably including scouts from 10 bowls.
With the victory, the 8-1 Seminoles assured themselves of a big-bowl invitation. Now 8-1, FSU plays Furman in Tallahassee next Saturday, then closes at Florida on Nov. 28 - a week after the bowls may officially extend bids.
The Fiesta Bowl continues to look like the best bet, but surely the Seminoles enhanced their chances of getting a bid to the Cotton of Sugar. The Fiesta bid is apparently there for the Seminoles, if they want it.
"I hope we are in the picture," said a smiling Bowden, "and I guess we are."
Auburn's uncharacteristic turnovers - six for the day (three fumbles, three interceptions) - simplified matters more than somewhat.
Auburn had gone into the game leading the nation in turnover ratio.
"If they helped us a little, it was about time," said Bowden, recalling his team's earlier luckless endeavors against a foe that still leads the series 2-12-1.
But this was a game in which FSU helped its self magnificently - the offense chopping out 362 yards against the nation's No. 2-ranked defense. Word was out: "You can't run on Auburn." Well, the Seminoles ran for 223 - Dexter Carter getting 67, Edgar Bennett 53, Sammie Smith 46, Dayne Williams 40.
But it was defense that paved multiple scoring opportunities and restricted a team ranked 10th nationally in scoring to six small points.
"They did a good job of 'collisioning' our receivers," said Auburn coach Pat Dye.
FSU defenders, led again by linebacker Paul McGowan, did a good job of "collisioning" any Tiger that had the ball. Terry Warren was there to recover Auburn's first two fumbles, forced by Sheldon Thompson and Paul McGowan.
Jeff Burger, the heralded Auburn quarterback, hit 19 of 34 passes, but most were dinky. Subtract a 50-yarder to Lawrence Tillman on blown coverage, and Burger's yardage total would read 137 , on 18 completions. And Auburn netted just 40 yards rushing among its 227 total.
This was one that saw Florida State score the first time Auburn got the ball.
On the game's opening play from scrimmage, Duke Donaldson fumbled when pounded by Thompson after taking a Burger pass, and Warren got the ball at Auburn's 37.
Smartly, quarterback Danny McManus did his thing - which on this series was hand the ball to Smith on half of the six plays it took. With the tailback knocking off 22 of the 37 yards, the ball was positioned at the 2, and Dayne Williams scored from there.
Mixing it up throughout, McManus completed 12 of his 27 passes for 139 and three of the Seminoles' four touchdowns.
Pat Carter, the big tight end, gathered in seven of those passes, for 79 telling yards and one touchdown. Herb Gainer caught just two all afternoon - but both were for touchdowns.
"In my opinion, Pat Carter is the best tight end in the United States," said Bowden. "He is just a natural. They don't keep statistics on his blocking."
In the eight previous games, Carter had only 17 catches, so busy was he with tasks like manhandling Miami's Danny Stubbs.
The score was 17-0 on this sunshiny afternoon before Auburn managed a first down.
But Florida State seemed in big early trouble on its second possession when Smith lost 20 yards, back to the FSU 11, trying to reverse his field. Soon, Rick Tuten was punting out of his end zone - a whopping 50-yarder that placed Auburn at its 38. Punting only four times, Tuten averaged 43 for the day.
FSU marched 64 yards in a dozen plays to make it 14-0.
Ronnie Lewis started it with an 18-yard reception - but Dayne Williams kept it going when, on fourth and four at the Auburn 40 the ball went to the fullback on a fake punt.
"We thought the fake punt would go," said Bowden. "Credit Wayne McDuffie (offensive coordinator). On Monday I asked him what he thought about it, and he said: 'The fake is there.'"
Williams got 6, to the 34 on the run. Pat Carter caught a 15-yard pass, and again Smith was effective in heavy traffic - with runs that led on to the 4, where McManus whipped a pass to Gainer for the touchdown.
Soon after, McGowan forced a fumble that Warren again got, this time at Auburn's 22. On the first play of the second quarter, Schmidt kicked a 36-yard field goal for 17-0.
Auburn made a move, knocking off 50 yards on the pass to Tillman. Closely covered by Deion Sanders most of the way, the touted receiver caught only two other passes.
The Tigers got a 32-yard field goal out of Win Lyle.
When Donaldson fumbled a Tuten punt, Marty Riggs - the snapper - was there to present FSU with a lovely opportunity at the Auburn 13.
But that went awry when Alvin Briggs intercepted a third-and-six McManus pass and skipped up to the 30.
A 19-yard Sanders punt return soon had FSU in good position again, at its 41. A 13-yard pass to Pat Carter and a 19-yard scamper by Lewis on a reverse got things going. The Seminoles settled for a 27-yard Schmidt field goal, for 20-3.
Quickly the defense set up another chance - this time a Stan Shiver interception at the Auburn 37. Two plays were all it took for McManus - an 18-yard pass to Pat Cater, then a 29-yarder to Gainer for the touchdown.
And when Schmidt kicked the extra point, for 27-3, that was the one that broke the record.
With 1:40 to go in the half, there was some question on how high the score would mount.
Briefly, at the start of the third quarter, Auburn hopes flared as Briggs picked on McManus for a second interception.
From its 34 Auburn moved, helped along by a pass-interference penalty - first flag on the Seminoles all day. With that, it took 14 plays against a grudging defense for Auburn to squeeze out a second field goal. Lyle's 31-yarder.
It became 34-6 with 12 ½ minutes to go.
The defense had backed Auburn to its 7, bringing a punt to FSU's 42.
Bennett picked his way wide for 20 yards. Dexter Carter slashed for 9 more. Soon an 18-yard Bennett run had FSU at the Auburn 5. After a yard loss, it was time for Pat Carter to catch another pass - a 6-yarder for the touchdown.
One yardstick of FSU's dominance was the way it hogged the ball - 79 plays to 57. If you would judge that in time consumed. FSU had the ball for almost exactly 15 more minutes.
"You just have to take the good with the bad," said Burger. And for the Auburn quarterback and his mates there was plenty of "bad" to go around. Odell Haggins and Eric Hayes sacked Burger on a day when FSU defenders stressed coverage more than the rush.
For Bowden it was victory No. 98 at Florida State. With two regular-season games and somebody's bowl left, he has a fair chance of reaching 100 in this 11th season.
But Bowden was looking for no special icing on this big birthday cake.
When somebody asked him if this game got the monkey off his back. Bowden had a quick reply.
"Well, for this week," he said.
"But the big monkey is down in Gainesville."

FSU rolls by Furman 41-10.
Paladins play pesky for awhile.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - There were no serious casualties at Florida State on Saturday night.
Considering the mismatch that was supposed to take place, bloodshed was one of the worries going into the game. Nobody in his right mind imagined Furman would actually give FSU a hard time, much less beat the Seminoles.
Well, the Paladins didn't beat them. But they sure managed to bother them before losing 41-10.
The win improved No. 4 FSU to 9-1. Furman, which isn't ranked in the latest Division 1-AA poll, dropped to 6-4.
The outcome was never in doubt, though there was a notable uneasiness running through the crowd at the start of the second half.
FSU had built a 20-7 halftime lead and hadn't exactly blown the Paladins away in the process. Furman took the second-half kickoff and drove it downfield behind the authoritative running of tailback Dwight Sterling.
The Paladins got as far as FSU's 1 yard line, where on fourth-and-one quarterback Keith Moore pitched back to Kennet Goldsmith. He was met by FSU's Greg Newell and a bunch of his FSU teammates at the 5-yard line.
Furman had come within 1 yard of making it 20-14. One play later, it was 27-7 in favor of FSU.
The Seminoles got the ball and Danny McManus pitched back to Sammie Smith. He veered left and picked his way down the line of scrimmage, then suddenly burst through a mass of bodies and took off up the sideline. Ronnie Lewis screened off Furman's Julius Dixon between the 30- and 40-yard lines, and Smith was in the clear.
In future years, the 95-yard run will be remembered as the second-longest in FSU history. People will probably forget how it broke open a game that nobody figured would be tight.
Maybe the Seminoles were looking back on last week's Auburn game or looking ahead to their game with Florida in two weeks. Or maybe, the Paladins weren't the 1-AA cupcakes most figured would be.
They may not have had the athletes that some of FSU's opponents have had, but the Paladins ran one of the most precise option games the Seminoles have encountered. Sterling was a demon to bring down, and Furman's defense gave Smith a harder time than quite a few Division 1-A teams have managed this season.
Thanks mostly to the 95-yard run, he managed to gain 176 yards and move into third place on FSU's single-season rushing list. The redshirt sophomore ended the night with 1,114 yards. He has one more game to surpass Larry Key's 1977 total of 1,117 yards and Greg Allen's 1982 total of 1,134.
Smith's 95-yard run is second in FSU history to Key's 97-yarder against Virginia Tech in 1976.
FSU added a 12-yard touchdown run by Marion Butts and a 26-yard pass from Chip Ferguson to Terry Anthony to complete its scoring.
That FSU fell behind early was no real surprise. The Seminoles spotted Tulane a touchdown a couple of weeks ago, then proceeded to win by 59 points. If the Green Wave could do it, why not the Paladins?
The surprising thing was the ease which they rolled upfield. FSU received the opening kickoff and promptly punted after three lethargic plays. Furman took over at its 43, and on the second play Moore pitched out to Sterling, who streaked 39 yards before Deion Sanders ran him down at FSU's 13-yard line.
The Seminole defense apparently was awakened by the play, but the damage had been done. The Paladins moved it the rest of the way, thanks largely to a pass-interference penalty which gave them a first down on FSU's 1-yard line.
Sterling plunged in two plays later, and Mike Wood's kick made it 7-0 with 10:20 left in the first quarter.
So much for the shutout.
The Seminoles responded, but not with the fervor one might have expected. They methodically moved 46 yards in 10 plays, but the drive died at the Furman 19-yard line and Schmidt kicked a 36-yard field goal to make it 7-3 with 5:35 left.
One could just imagine the shock and laughter that first-quarter score elicited when read at might games around the country. It didn't stay that way long, however.
FSU forced the Paladins to punt, and promptly drove it 52 yards for the go-ahead score. The final 20 came on a quick bolt up the middle by Smith. Schmidt's kick made it 10-7 with 57 seconds left in the quarter.
Furman was again forced to punt, giving FSU the ball back at its 20-yard line. McManus, who had been scattering his passes all over the field, started finding his receivers. He hit Ronnie Lewis for 20 yards and Herb Gainer for 19, but the drive ran out of steam and FSU settled for another Schmidt field goal, this one from 41 yards, to make it 13-7.
It was becoming obvious that Furman wasn't willing to fulfill its expected role as FSU's designated flunky - at least not yet. The Seminole fans who came to see an amusing little massacre were cheering with a little more emotion than they probably figured would be necessary. Then they really got into the game, thanks to perhaps the most bizarre series of plays FSU has been involved in this season.
Furman had the ball at FSU's 42-yard line. It was third-and-one. Furman decided to try the option play that had worked with reasonable effectiveness throughout the first half.
Moore tried to pitch out, but Stan Shiver wrapped him up and forced a fumble which FSU's Eric Hayes appeared to recover.
Many thought it was FSU's ball. Or was it?
An official had inadvertently blown his whistle during the play, which meant it had to be run again. That got Bowden fairly fired up, and he gave the officials an earful.
FSU fans, following the lead of their beloved coach, cranked their cheering level up a few noisy decibels when the Paladins lined up for their second third-and-one attempt.
The noise was so stifling that Moore turned around and asked the official to call a timeout. The back official simply pointed toward the line of scrimmage, telling Moore in so many words that the play must go on.
His teammates couldn't hear his signals, however, and two of them jumped offside to turn the third-and-one into third-and-six.
Furman coach Jimmy Satterfield got so excited by the little event that he ran about 20 yards onto the field and started jawing at the official. That earned Furman a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Third-and-one from the FSU 42-yard line had become third-and-21 from the Furman 37. Perhaps seeing things were going into the toilet, Furman decided a little trickery might solve the mess and tried a quick kick on third down.
Moore pitched back to halfback John Bagwell, who took a step and tried to punt. He swung; he missed; the crowd exploded in laughter and FSU recovered at the Furman 35-yard line.
FSU scored seven plays later on a 4-yard run by Dayne Williams. Schmidt's kick made it 20-7 and ended the scoring in the first half that didn't go as anyone really expected.

From the Tallahassee Democrat, November 29, 1987, page 25, by Bill McGrotha.
The End.
Seminoles bring down the curtain 28-14 on a six-year
Florida run.
GAINESVILLE, FL - Aloha, there!
Which as they say it in Hawaii, means both hello and goodbye - and about the way it was here Saturday as Florida State met Florida for the 30th time.
Behind 14-3 in the first moments of the second quarter, Florida State emphatically slammed its defensive door shut, opened its offensive door wide.
And won 28-14.
Goodbye, it was, to a six-game losing streak against this tough rival.
Hello, it was, to a 10-1 record, and an increasingly interesting date against Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl, where perchance a national championship awaits.
Goodbye, it was, to a hatful of old records on both teams, some of which seemed to matter little.
Hello, it was, to Bobby Bowden's 100th Florida State coaching victory - he's lost 37, tied 3.
And goodbye, before a crowd of 74,613 on this pleasant-weather day, to a bit of Florida Field luster. The Gators, ranked among the nation's best in recent years, had since 1981 gone 35-4-2 in this place. In 18 tries, FSU has won just four here - three of those, interestingly, with a seven association - 1967, 1977, 1987.
"They did what they had to do against us," said Florida coach Galen Hall. "I think the turning point came when we couldn't make first downs in the second and third quarter.
"I think that got them in control. I hoped they would come back and keep throwing the ball around, but they came back and hammered the ball at us - which I was afraid of all along."
Did Florida State ever hammer!
Against a team that led the Southeastern Conference in every defensive category, and had yielded an average of 116.5 yards rushing to 10 opponents, the Seminoles ran for 279 yards.
Among other things, that enabled No. 3-ranked FSU to reel off 26 more plays (76 to 50) and hog the ball more than 17 minutes longer. One of the more striking facts was that Florida had the ball for 9:58 of the first 15 minutes - and only 11:55 of the final 45.
FSU's offensive line, led by tackle Pat Tomberlin and tight end Pat Carter, spurred the overwhelming job of this splendid unit.
Fierce blocking enabled Sammie Smith to break for 116 yards in 17 carries, running his season total to a record-breaking 1,230, passing the 1,134 mark of Greg Allen.
And Dexter Carter, in 19 runs, got 111. "I feel like every game this year our offensive line has dominated - even against Miami," said Carter. "It leaves us to take on the free safety and gain a lot of yards. All we had to do was execute."
There was, too, exceptional execution by the defense.
"If you asked the difference in this game and the past six against Florida, the answer is simple," said a happy Bowden. "It is defense. Can you imagine what Florida would have done to us with an early 14-3 lead in the past?
"They would have killed us."
Linebacker Paul McGowan again seemed to lead the charge, with notable help from tackle Eric Hayes (two stops for losses), plus noseguard Odell Haggins, strong safety Stan Shiver and outside linebacker Kevin Grant, who each had a sack.
Florida netted just 207 yards, much of it late - about half FSU's total 411. Emmitt Smith, the dandy freshman tailback got an even 100, on 20 carries - setting a Florida single-season rushing record of 1,341.
Much of Smith's work came on Florida's first play - just after the Gator's won the coin toss and, rather surprisingly, elected to attack. On a opening pitch, Smith swept right for 43 yards before Deion Sanders ran him down.
But Shiver's 10-yard sack of Kerwin Bell put the Gators out of field-goal range.
Bell threw 21 times, hit 12 for 114 yards, did no real damage. But he checked out with 7,585 career yards - the most in SEC history. "I wanted so bad to win my last game at Florida," said the senior. "FSU is a very physical team and they came at us all day long. They have a shot at the national title. So we didn't lose to any old football team today."
Florida State moved from its 11 to a 3-0 lead on its first possession. Danny McManus opening with a 23-yard pass to Herb Gainer, soon followed with a 47-yarder to Ronnie Lewis. Throwing just 16 times all day - only three in the last half - the quarterback hit nine for 132 yards.
When Florida checked FSU at the 9, Derek Schmidt kicked the first of his four field goals, this one a 26-yarder.
On FSU's next possession, Ricky Mulberry intercepted a McManus pass deflected by teammate Gerald Dickens, and the Seminoles suddenly were breathing hard at their 37.
Time after time Bell funneled the ball to Smith, who scored from the 5, and it was 7-3.
Things went awry on the Seminoles' following series. After Huey Richardson sacked McManus, another Richardson big play following - the blocking of a Rick Tuten punt. Florida got possession at FSU's 9.
"It was a high snap - our punter had to reach way up there," said Bowden. "Now, their guy did a good job and I don't want to take away from that."
On the first play of the second quarter Smith scored from the 4, and it became 14-3.
Thereupon, school was out. But no one dreamed it.
FSU marched from its 17 to a 38-yard Schmidt field-goal try. Wide right.
But Haggins sacked Bell, leading to a punt, and FSU started anew from its 37. Mixing up running with a key 14-yard pass to Lawrence Dawsey, McManus moved the team to the 7, where Schmidt shortened things to 14-6 with a 23-yard field goal.
With time running out in the half, it was again punting time for Florida - this one to FSU's 42. FSU scratched out yards to Florida's 36, and on the last play of the half Schmidt was true on a 53-yard field goal that made it 14-9.
"Oh, that one was big," said Bowden. "I think it kind of told us that Florida was giving out of gas about them. There in that second quarter when we began to drive - that said something, and then we got the 53-yarder."
From its 18, at the start of the last half, FSU moved. Smith broke on a 39-yard run to Florida's 40, where Oliver's tackle saved a touchdown. On fourth and one at the 31, McManus bootlegged to the 22.
Soon Schmidt - the leading scorer in the history of major-college football - made his fourth field goal, from 37-yard range, and it was 14-12.
Again it was three-downs-and-out for Florida, and interference on Sanders' fair catch of the punt gave FSU position at Florida's 41. Edgar Bennett led to the 20, where McManus hit Lewis with a 17-yarder at the 3. Dayne Williams got the touchdown from the 1. FSU led 20-14 after Bennett whammed up the middle on a surprising 2-point run - the Seminoles had three wide receivers in the lineup.
Still, Florida was offenseless. A punt near the end of the third quarter placed FSU at its 40.
Fourteen plays took FSU 60 yards, with Dexter Carter runs contributing greatly. On fourth and two at the Florida 28, Dayne Williams slammed for 4 and the first down. Smith's 8-yard run soon led to the 1 - and Williams got his 15th touchdown of the season from there.
The final score was on the board with 10:36 to play.
FSU's Corian Freeman recovered a kickoff fumble, providing a shot from Florida's 27. But Florida defenders shut off FSU running bids, and Schmidt was short on a 46-yard try for three.
Bell got most of his passing yardage on a closing drive to the FSU 12, where a final-play throw failed.
"Give FSU a lot of credit," said Clifford Charlton, the superb outside linebacker from Tallahassee. "They're a heck of a football team. They can do it all, and I wish them the best for their quest for the national championship."
Now 6-5, Florida is headed for Hawaii's Aloha Bowl and a Christmas date with UCLA.
Paul McGowan, like many others, saw this as the biggest victory of his time at Florida State.
"I'll tell you one thing, this is going to be a fun year for me now," he said. "I'll remember this forever."
Headed out of the dressing room, McManus paused.
"These guys are amazing - the whole team," he said. "When we were down like that (14-3), all we were hearing was 'OK, let's go!'"
And FSU went as it seldom has in such binding circumstances - another mark of what very probably is this school's best football team ever.

Flying Fiesta Finale.
Seminoles play skyball to beat Nebraska 31-28.
TEMPE, AZ - Big defense. Big drive. Big play.
And with a 15-yard touchdown pass on fourth down, Florida State's football team dramatically won the Fiesta Bowl here Friday 31-28 over Nebraska.
"Amazing," said FSU coach Bobby Bowden, echoing the word of 71,112 in packed Sun Devil Stadium and perhaps as many as 30 million more watching on NBC-TV.
The last pass of Danny McManus as a Seminole was surely his best.
Not only the most valuable player of this game but one of the most valuable in Florida State annals, McManus threw more times (51) for more yardage (375) than any Fiesta Bowler ever. In the first instance, he broke Vinny Testaverde's record, and in the second he surpassed the 347 total that FSU's Gary Huff got in the first Fiesta Bowl of 1971.
"Just another boring Fiesta Bowl," kidded a happy committeeman whose bowl has a reputation for football fireworks.
Ronald Lewis, one of 10 receivers McManus utilized for 28 completions, caught the winning pass. The clock showed just 3:07 left.
Down 14-0 early, the Seminoles rebounded with three second-quarter touchdowns for a 21-14 halftime lead. Nebraska tied it with an opening movement of the last half, then shot in front 28-24 near the end of the quarter after Derek Schmidt kicked a 32-yard field goal.
It seemed over when, with about seven minutes to go, Nebraska was poised, second down and goal at FSU's 2.
"I thought we had had it," said Bowden.
As Tyreese Knox ran into the FSU middle, noseguard Thomas Harp went under him, raised him high, and vulnerable to linebackers Paul McGowan and David Palmer. The ball popped out, and tackle Eric Hayes got it for FSU at the 3.
Then came the magnificent drive, 95 yards to a first down at the 2. But Nebraska's defense and a personal-foul penalty against Dexter Carter - who lashed out with a foot as a defender twisted his ankle - slapped FSU back to the 18. Pat Carter caught a 3-yarder, before McManus - following a timeout - socked it to the swift Lewis for victory.
Thus it was Florida State finished 11-1, its only loss of what will be generally hailed as its best season to date that one-pointer to Miami (26-25) on Oct. 3.
It was a show that surely will bring Florida State's highest final rank ever. The Seminoles were No. 3 going in.
Though oddsmakers had made the Seminoles a 3-point favorite in this one, the course of the game was hardly predictable.
"No, I didn't think they'd throw that much," said Nebraska coach Tom Osborne.
"Well, it looked like they were just determined to take the run away from us and make us pass," said Bowden, who had gone into the game with high concern.
"I had a feeling Nebraska wanted this game more than we did - that our team was a little lax, and the coaches, too," he said.
"A lot of things we planned today we couldn't do. I never thought it would be like this. I thought it would be a low-scoring game.
"They stopped our running, but we were able to throw the ball - including inside a lot, and much of that was due to the speed of our receivers.
"Danny is such a winner. He is a streaky passer sometimes, but he streaked at the right time today."
When it was over Florida State outgained Nebraska and its formidable option game, 457 yards to 384. Against one of the nation's tougher defenses, McManus had made good on nine of 17 third down conversions. Nebraska managed effectiveness on only four of 11 such.
But turnovers, poor punts and worse punt coverage put Florida State in an early hole. Rick Tuten averaged just 29,5 yards on four punts, one a 5-yarder off the side of his foot that put Nebraska in mid-field position for its final touchdown.
"It was unfair of us to ask him to punt after he got sick," said Bowden. "It just caught up with us."
The punter on Miami's national-championship team of 1983, Tuten was stricken by tuberculosis during the summer, and the season was perhaps a bigger struggle for him than any Seminole.
Bowden was critical of punt coverage that was primarily responsible for Nebraska's first two touchdowns.
"Wayne (offensive coordinator McDuffie) had warned me our punting team was not ready to play," said Bowden. "I told them Thursday night 'you guys are gonna win or lose this game.' Danged if they didn't believe me!"
FSU's start was very shaky - two fumbles on a game-opening series. After a McManus bootleg for 21 yards paved a first down at the Nebraska 42, a Dayne Williams bobble was grabbed by Nebraska.
The defense held, but a punt put Florida State at its 7. When Tuten punted out, Richard Bell spun a 27-yard return to FSU's 18. Keith Jones got the touchdown from the 3 after setting it up with a 17-yard run with a pitchout.
Dexter Carter's 42-yard kickoff return got FSU to midfield, and McManus passing led to a first down at the 18. On the next play, McManus threw badly under pressure, and Brian Washington intercepted.
There followed another punting exchange, and on Tuten's second effort of the game, Dana Brinson - a wingback burner from Valdosta, Ga. - sailed 40 yards for a touchdown with the return, and Nebraska led 14-0.
Little was going right for FSU. On a following series, the Seminoles drove to the Nebraska 18, but after Herb Gainer dropped an end-zone pass, Derek Schmidt missed a 43-yard field goal.
McManus would miss on six of his first seven second-quarter passes, but things started going FSU's way when Deion Sanders intercepted quarterback Steve Taylor's pass, presenting opportunity at the Huskers' 40.
Gainer made two big catches, the second a 10-yarder for a touchdown.
Now the Seminoles were cranking.
On one of the game's more significant plays, cornerback Eric Williams forced a fumble out of Taylor, with McGowan recovering at the FSU 25.
Six plays brought a touchdown. It started with a McManus bootleg for 19, ended on Dayne Williams' 4-yard run for a touchdown that tied it 14-14.
Tough defense once more checked Nebraska, and when John Kroeker punted poorly - he averaged just 35.5 on his four - the Seminoles had a shot from their 45.
Seven plays brought a 21-14 Florida State lead at halftime. Lewis caught a key 17-yarder at the Nebraska 28, and 44 seconds before halftime Gainer caught a 25-yard scoring pass.
On that big second quarter, FSU seemed poised for a rout. It had controlled the football, 48 plays to 26, had held it for 18:10 of the 30 minutes while running up 272 yards to Nebraska's 112. Gainer had pulled in five passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns, and though he would catch no more, his second-quarter effort would stand as a memorable factor in this outcome.
Nebraska had not completed a pass, and FSU had drawn no penalty.
But, on the opening series of the last half, Taylor struck with a big pass - a 48-yarder to tight end Tom Banderas at the FSU 19. On a draw, Brinson sped to the 2, and Taylor kept for the touchdown that tied it 21-21.
After Keith Ross returned the kickoff 32 yards to FSU;s 42, the Seminoles scored on their fourth straight possession - the Schmidt field goal that again put FSU in front, 24-21.
On its last turn in the third quarter, Nebraska moved, following the 5-yard punt, 52 yards in 9 plays for a 28-24 advantage. Again a Taylor pass - a 23-yarder to Morgan Gregory - was the key. On fourth-and-one at the 4, Knox slammed up the middle for an easy touchdown.
And on its first series of the final quarter, Nebraska was ready to wrap this one up with a pretty ribbon. It drove 71 yards in 13 plays to a first down at the FSU 2.
With the start of the drive, FSU drew its first penalty of the game, a 5-yarder for offsides. It would receive only one other all day - the late 15-yarder on Dexter Carter. Nebraska was flagged nine times for 78 yards.
"I couldn't believe how the game was called today," said Neil Smith, the Nebraska tackle acclaimed the game's most valuable defender. All of the officiating crew was from the Southwest Conference, and there seemed inconsistency with puzzling delays in calls for both teams.
Eating up the clock on that drive at the 2, Taylor kept FSU jumping with his effective keepers. But the Knox fumble ended it all.
McManus - throwing, throwing, throwing - found Terry Anthony at the 10, Lewis at the 18, Dexter Carter at the 34, Anthony for 21 at the Nebraska 45. And then Dexter Carter for 43 at the 2.
But Williams lost a yard, and Dexter Carter was stopped on the play that brought the penalty and place FSU at the 18. Pat Carter got just three on a pass over the middle.
Fourth down - and timeout!
Then the golden throw and golden catch by Lewis that capped Florida State's golden season.
Not that Nebraska was through. A 56-yard pass, Taylor to Gregory, reached FSU's 2 - but a flag had fallen, and the play was voided.
"our tight end lined up on the wrong side of the field," said Nebraska coach Tom Osborne. "I don't know what happened. Guess he didn't hear the signal. That hurt us badly."
Nebraska probed to the FSU 43, but was set back to its 34 following an illegal pass. Another penalty followed, and it came to fourth-and-40.
And perhaps not even the Seminoles could have overcome that.
