OFFICIAL: Jimbo Fisher Leaves FSU Football After Eight Seasons
December 1, 2017
STATEMENT FROM FSU PRESIDENT JOHN THRASHER
Florida State
University has one of the premier programs in college football and has had only two head football coaches in the past 40 years.
Today, Jimbo Fisher informed me he has accepted an offer to become the next head football coach at Texas A&M University. Coach Fisher did an exceptional job as both an assistant coach at FSU and in the challenging role of successor to the legendary Bobby Bowden. I believe Texas A&M is getting one of the best coaches in college football. We appreciate all he has done for our program and wish him and his family great success moving forward.
From the moment media reports began to circulate about our position, it became evident the job would attract great interest from a number of elite coaches, and we will move quickly to evaluate candidates from across the nation.
Our fans are the best in the country, loyal and passionate about developing student-athletes who are champions on and off the field. They’ve made Doak Campbell Stadium one of the most thrilling venues in all of college sports along with its storied traditions that represent the spirit and excellence of our distinguished university, athletically and academically. The excitement around Florida State is indisputable, and a tremendous opportunity awaits whoever is chosen as our new head football coach.
STATEMENT FROM FSU VICE PRESIDENT AND DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS STAN
WILCOX
“President Thrasher and I have worked together through this challenging period while Coach Fisher was making a decision, and I appreciate the cooperation, support and leadership he has
provided,” said Stan Wilcox, Florida State University Vice President and Director of Athletics.
In the interim, I have appointed associate head coach and defensive tackles coach Odell Haggins to serve as our head coach versus ULM.
As the president alluded to, we are extremely pleased by the quality of individuals who have already expressed interest in being the head coach at Florida State University. I am confident we will fill the position very soon.
I would tell our supporters and fans the same thing that I told our team: we will hire a head coach that will lead Florida State to
ACC and National Championships; one who will maintain our commitment to academic excellence; and one who will make you proud to be a Seminole.”

TALLAHASSEE, FL – After less than a week on the hunt, Florida State has its man.
FSU on Tuesday announced that Willie Taggart, the former coach at Western Kentucky, South Florida and Oregon, has agreed to become the next coach of the Seminoles’ football team.
A Bradenton, Fla., native who grew up a Florida State fan, Taggart is the 10th full-time head coach in program history and just its third head coach since 1976, when the legendary Bobby Bowden first took over in Tallahassee.
He succeeds Jimbo Fisher, who recently left after 11 seasons with FSU, including eight as head coach.
Taggart brings a 47-50 overall record as a head coach, but that mark includes massive rebuilding jobs at WKU and USF, as well as a quick turnaround at Oregon.
Western Kentucky, Taggart’s alma mater, had lost 20 straight games when he took over in 2010. But under Taggart’s guidance, the Hilltoppers went 2-10 in their new coach’s first season, then 7-5 in both 2011 and 2012.
Taggart’s stay in Tampa followed a similar script. He took over a team that went 3-9 the year before his arrival and, after a 2-10 mark in his first season, doubled the Bulls’ win totals in 2014 (4-8) and 2015 (8-4).
That momentum carried into a memorable 2016 campaign in which the Bulls set a school record with 11 wins and capped their season with a 46-39 victory over Southeastern Conference foe South Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl.
That was enough to catch the attention of the Oregon Ducks, who were in need of a rebuild after stumbling to a 4-8 record in 2016.
As he had at all previous stops, Taggart increased the Ducks’ win total in his first year in Eugene, leading them to a 7-5 mark that included wins over Nebraska, Utah, Arizona and Oregon State.
And the Ducks might have been in for even bigger things had they not lost starting quarterback Justin Herbert to a broken collarbone earlier this season. At the time of his injury, Oregon was 4-1 and ranked 24th in the country.
Away from the field, the 41-year-old Taggart has earned a reputation as one of the nation’s top recruiters, which ought to come in handy with the first ever early signing day looming on Dec. 20.
Taggart’s Florida roots – he was a few years behind Nebraska star Tommie Frazier at Manatee High in Bradenton – have helped him make strong inroads in the state’s prep football community.
The turnarounds at WKU and USF were both built on a new influx of talent, and he was in the midst of putting together a potential top-10 class at Oregon when FSU came calling.
Before becoming a coach, Taggart was first a quarterback. He was a four-year starter at the position at Western Kentucky, where he was coached by Jack Harbaugh and recruited by Harbaugh’s son Jim, who got his start in coaching on his father’s WKU staff while still playing in the NFL.
Taggart went on to become a two-time finalist for the Walter Payton Award, which is presented annually to the top player in the NCAA FCS, and he is one of only four players in the program’s history to have his jersey retired.
He later reconnected with Jim Harbaugh when Harbaugh hired him to coach running backs at Stanford in 2007. Taggart held that post for three seasons and helped Cardinal standout Toby Gerhart to unanimous All-America honors and a runner-up finish in the 2009 Heisman Trophy vote.
Taggart and his wife Taneshia have three children – sons Willie Jr. and Jackson, and daughter Morgan.

Missed Opportunities, Missing Magic Spoil Taggart Debut.
by Tim Linafelt
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In some ways, No. 19 Florida State’s 24-3 loss to No. 20 Virginia Tech on Monday night made all the sense in the world.
Teams that commit five turnovers, go 1 for 4 in the red zone and surrender 14 tackles for loss, as the Seminoles did, usually end up on the wrong side of the scoreboard.
But in other ways, what happened here at Doak Campbell Stadium defies explanation.
Because after nine months of optimism and renewed energy, spurred by talk of “Lethal Simplicity” and a return to the glory days, who would have predicted this result?
Not just a loss, but a loss like this?
No one wearing garnet and gold, it turns out.
That includes coach Willie Taggart, whose long-awaited debut was spoiled by the sharper, more opportunistic Hokies.
“It was not what any of us expected,” Taggart said. “The guys have been practicing really well, and I thought that they would come out and play well.
“We did not play a good game at all.”
Looking at the box score, it was hard to argue.
FSU’s offense moved the ball – the Seminoles actually outgained Virginia Tech, 327-319 – but sputtered in key situations.
Four drives reached inside Virginia Tech’s 20-yard line, but only one ended with points – a 22-yard field goal at that.
FSU struck for six plays of at least 20 yards, but often followed those big gains with procedural penalties or, worse, missed blocking assignments.
As a result, the Seminoles often found themselves playing behind the sticks and facing an uphill climb against veteran coordinator Bud Foster’s defense.
No surprise, then, that the Hokies sacked Deondre Francois five times, stopped 14 plays in the backfield and limited FSU’s vaunted rushing attack to just 3.4 yards per carry.
And even that number was inflated by a late, 85-yard scamper from Cam Akers.
That play and the sequence that followed might have best summed up the game.
Bottled up for most of the evening, Akers finally broke free down the left sideline for a run that woke up the 75,237 fans in attendance and gave the Seminoles a chance at a dramatic rally.
Akers’ run ended at the 6-yard line, and, with first-and-goal, a two-touchdown deficit and nearly 12 minutes still on the clock, the Seminoles all of a sudden had a chance to flip the script and put pressure on the Hokies.
Instead, FSU went backward again – a run for no gain on first down, a loss of four yards on second down and, finally, a fumbled handoff on third down that all but ensured the final outcome.
Virginia Tech took care of that for good a few moments later, when Josh Jackson connected with Eric Kumah for a 49-yard touchdown pass that provided the final margin.
“It seemed there was something different each time,” Francois said of FSU’s red-zone troubles. “Little mistakes here and there, missed assignments, bad execution by me.
“It seemed like we just took turns making mistakes.”
That was the last of several missed opportunities for FSU, any one of which might have made things look different had they gone the other way.
Midway through the second quarter, Nyqwan Murray appeared to break free for a 31-yard touchdown that would have made it 10-7. But officials ruled him down at the 1-yard line and, despite replays that suggested Murray actually scored, the play was never reviewed.
Still, with first-and-goal inside the 1-yard line, Taggart expected his offense to finish the drive. Instead, the Seminoles were flagged for a false start, then sputtered and had to settle for a field goal.
“We’re just not winning one-on-one battles,” Taggart said. “There’s no synergy up front on the O-line. One guy misses a block, the next guy misses a block. We never did get anything going.”
On FSU’s previous drive, long passes from Francois to Khalan Laborn and Keith Gavin had the Seminoles humming and the Hokies on their heels for the first time.
Just as quickly, though, the drive stalled after the Seminoles lost five yards on first-and-10 at the Virginia Tech 15-yard line.
“It comes down to the fact that we had too many self-inflicted wounds,” center Alec Eberle said. “A fumble. A pre-snap penalty … just missed communications, missed assignments. I think that’s what hurt us.”
Florida State’s defense, meanwhile, seemed to be a bit of a bright spot, although few felt like admitting as much during post-game interviews.
After a rocky start in which Virginia Tech marched 75 yards in 10 plays for an opening touchdown, coordinator Harlon Barnett’s group settled in and largely held the Hokies in check.
The Seminoles forced either a punt or a turnover on downs on nine straight possessions, a stretch that began late in the first quarter and lasted until midway through the fourth.
FSU posted three sacks and seven tackles for loss of its own and, in a painful twist, could have recovered four Virginia Tech fumbles. The Hokies recovered all four.
“We’ve got to come up with those balls,” said junior defensive end Brian Burns, who had 1.5 sacks.
The Hokies did their part.
Not only did they grab five turnovers – three interceptions and two fumbles – but they also seized control of the game late in the second quarter with a devastating play on special teams.
Trailing by only a touchdown and seemingly headed for a manageable halftime deficit, the Seminoles lined up to punt from their end zone with about four minutes left in the second quarter.
Virginia Tech’s Chris Cunningham surged in from the edge and got a hand on the ball, and Kumah hauled it in for an easy score.
Consider it a stinging nod to Frank Beamer, the former longtime Hokies coach whose trademark commitment to special teams earned the nickname, “Beamerball.”
Beamer was in attendance Monday night, serving as an honorary captain alongside FSU’s Bobby Bowden.
“We did exactly what we preached not to do,” Taggart said. “Turned the ball over and penalties and then get a punt blocked. It’s hard to beat a good team when you play sloppy that way.”
Near the end of his interview session, Burns was asked a question that’s likely on the minds of many Florida State fans, especially after watching last year’s team stumble to a 2-5 start and set in motion the events that brought Taggart to FSU in the first place.
Is this year’s team better equipped to handle adversity than its predecessor?
Burns didn’t hesitate with his answer:
“Yeah,” he said. Then again, “Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.”
“We don’t like losing,” Taggart said. “… We’ve got to get back to work and get that momentum back on our side. And the only way you do that is to go back to work and go win a ballgame.”

Noles Extract Taggart’s First Win With Great Escape.
by Tim Linafelt
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – On a night when Florida State honored the life and legacy of Burt Reynolds, the Seminoles paid perfect tribute to “The Bandit.”
The Seminoles had a few run-ins with “Smokey,” then, just as trouble seemed to close in from all sides, they turned a corner, dropped the hammer on that black Trans-Am and cruised to a great escape for Willie Taggart’s first career victory at FSU.
After trailing by as many as 13 points, and by five late in the fourth quarter, the Seminoles took their first lead with a five-yard touchdown pass from Deondre Francois to Tre’ McKitty with 4:03 to play.
A few moments later, Levonta Taylor added some style with a 63-yard interception return for a touchdown that sealed a 36-26 win and allowed the 72,239 fans in attendance to exhale on their way out of the stadium.
Florida State (1-1) improved to 24-0 against FCS/Division I-AA opponents and will look to even its ACC record next week at Syracuse (noon, ESPN).
“Good win for the Noles,” Taggart said. “I’m excited our guys found a way to win the ballgame. It wasn’t pretty, but it was good to see our guys find a way to come back and get a win.”
Taggart acknowledged the obvious: A late, come-from-behind victory against a team from a lower division – even a good team, at that – isn’t what most fans had in mind when they entered the stadium.
The Seminoles had too many penalties (nine for 69 yards), converted four of 14 third downs and, despite clamping down in the second half, surrendered 525 yards of total offense.
But for a program still early in its transition under a new coaching staff, “Pretty” can wait for another day. (Ask Nebraska, a loser in its debut under a promising new coach, if it would take an ugly win right now.)
“It’s hard to win a football game,” Taggart said. “It’s not easy at all. And I don’t care what kind of win you get, if you get a ‘W,’ you should be excited.”
Samford, ranked No. 9 in the Football Championship Subdivision Top 25, had 10 days to prepare for the Seminoles after opening its season last Thursday. And it showed on the Bulldogs’ first play from scrimmage – a 54-yard touchdown pass from Devlin Hodges to Kelvin McKnight dubbed “Spear.”
“(McKnight) has been wanting to run this double-move all year, and so we called it “Spear” for the Florida State Seminoles,” Samford coach Chris Hatcher said. “We practiced it all week and ran it on the first play and it worked pretty good.”
The Bulldogs missed the point-after attempt, but tacked on another touchdown that made it 13-0 and, for the next three-plus quarters, kept the Seminoles at arm’s length and dangerously close to their first ever loss against an FCS opponent.
Every time the Seminoles threatened to overcome their slow start, the Bulldogs had an answer.
When Tamorrion Terry scored FSU’s first touchdown of the season – on a beautiful, 27-yard pass from Francois down the left sideline – Samford tacked on a field goal that pushed FSU’s deficit back to two scores.
When Francois later kept the ball on a read-option play and waltzed easily into the end zone, the Bulldogs countered with another Hodges-to-McKnight connection, this one from 27 yards for a score.
“Words can’t even explain how frustrated we were,” McKitty said. “But we got it together.”
Terry’s second TD of the night made it 23-21 at halftime, and, despite signs that the teams might trade scores for the rest of the night, it stayed there until midway through the fourth quarter, when Samford added one more field goal that pushed their lead five points.
It would be the Bulldogs’ last scoring play of the night.
“I was impressed with our defense. Especially in the second half,” Taggart said. “I thought we made some adjustments that we needed to.”
Beyond that, though, the Seminoles had plenty to critique about their performance.
There were penalty flags that wiped out big gains, there was a pedestrian 3.8 average yards per carry for FSU’s rushing attack, and there were two missed field goals.
All told, there were a lot of the same things that led to defeat against Virginia Tech five days ago.
“It wasn’t a clean game at all,” Taggart said. “… We know, by far, that wasn’t our best in that game. We’ve got to play cleaner. We’ve got to play smarter.”
This time, though, FSU found its resolve and, as a result, found a welcome victory.
Staring at a five-point deficit and, in some respects, with their young season on the line, the Seminoles embarked on an 11-play, 82-yard drive that ended in McKitty’s go-ahead touchdown.
Along the way, FSU converted two third downs, overcame a bad snap that scored as a fumble and bounced back from a shovel pass that lost seven yards on first-and-goal.
When Francois’ third-and-goal pass found McKitty in the middle of the end zone, there was no hiding the relief.
“It was very satisfying,” Francois said. “That was a play that we worked on. ‘Coach T’ called it at the right moment, Tre’ ran a great route, the line blocked great. I didn’t even get touched the play. And we executed. That’s what we need to do.”
Francois threw for three touchdowns and ran for another while completing 31 of 46 passes for 320 yards.
He found a worthy counterpart in Samford’s Devlin Hodges, who threw for 475 yards and two scores.
But Hodges, who could become the FCS’ all-time leading passer this season, was also picked off four times – two from Kyle Meyers, one from A.J. Westbrook and one from Taylor.
“You can tell that (Hodges) has a great understanding of their offense, and he’s really accurate throwing the football,” Taggart said. “… And we knew going in that he would challenge us. I thought we would get to him more.”
Indeed, Florida State finished without a sack and had only three tackles for loss.
Increasing those numbers will no doubt be added to Taggart’s to-do list this week, but, for now at least, that same 24-hour rule that applied when FSU lost to Virginia Tech will be put to better use.
Enjoy a victory – even one that came harder than he would have liked – then get back to work on Monday.
“For us to play as bad as we did and find a way, I was impressed with our guys that they didn’t quit and they found a way to win a game,” Taggart said. “I thought it was a hell of a comeback. And for them to do that says a lot about them.”
Laborn suffers dislocated knee
Taggart confirmed that redshirt freshman running back Khalan Laborn suffered a dislocated knee when returning a kick in the first quarter. He did not offer a timeline for Laborn’s return.
“I hate it for Khalan,” Taggart said. “He worked really hard to help our football team.”

‘We’ve Got To Get Better’: Football Falls, 30-7, At Syracuse.
Tim Linafelt, Senior Writer
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After evaluating last year’s Florida State football team, Willie Taggart said he saw a group that didn’t respond well to adversity.
In the nine months since he became FSU’s head coach, fixing that problem – and creating a mentally-strong team in the process – has been one of Taggart’s top priorities.
The Seminoles will soon see just how far they’ve come. Because after a 30-9 loss to Syracuse on Saturday at the Carrier Dome, adversity is here.
FSU (1-2, 0-2 in ACC play) will look to get back on track at home next week against Northern Illinois.
“We all need to look within ourselves and ask ourselves, ‘What are we doing?’” Taggart said after the game. “Are we doing everything that we’re supposed to? Are we doing enough to help this football team?”
Those questions, Taggart said, applied to players and coaches alike. And, at least on Saturday, the answer was a painful and obvious, “No.”
Saddled by too many mistakes – including 11 penalties for 90 yards – the Seminoles’ offense struggled to find its rhythm against a Syracuse defense that had appeared vulnerable in previous weeks.
FSU’s defense did its part, but with an overwhelming disparity in time of possession, as well as overwhelming heat and humidity inside Syracuse’s Carrier Dome, coordinator Harlon Barnett’s group eventually wore down.
The Orange went into halftime holding just a 6-0 lead, but scored on four of five possessions in the second half.
Reserve quarterback Tommy DeVito, a redshirt freshman, engineered three touchdown drives after usual starter Eric Dungey left with an injury midway through the game.
By the end of the third quarter, the Orange had held the ball for more than 28 minutes and finished with a total possession advantage of 36:53-23:07.
“They played too much football tonight,” Taggart said of his defense. “If you play that much, you’re going to eventually break.”
The Seminoles managed 240 yards of total offense, 178 of which came through the air. Their first touchdown – a 1-yard run from quarterback Deondre Francois – cut their deficit to 24-7 midway through the fourth quarter and offered a glimmer of a comeback bid.
Syracuse, however, recovered the ensuing onside-kick attempt and then sealed the game with a 19-yard touchdown run a few moments later.
“Just not playing hard enough,” Francois said. “It’s not the coaches. It’s not the play-calling. It’s not the scheme.
“We’re prepared, we’re just not playing hard enough. Everybody is playing harder than us.”
Francois completed 18 of 36 passes for 178 yards and one interception, but he was also sacked four times, hit often and otherwise relentlessly pressured by Syracuse’s defensive front.
The Orange didn’t allow much on the ground, either, just 62 yards on 23 carries. FSU’s longest run of the night, a 21-yard scramble from Francois, came after a play had broken down.
“They took advantage of the things we didn’t do well,” Taggart said. “We’ve got to be much better up front. That’s where it all starts, and, right now, we’re not that good up front and we’ve got to get better.”
Taggart in that specific instance was talking about his offensive line, but, with exception to some positive moments from his defense, could’ve been talking about the team as a whole.
In his postgame press conference, Taggart was quick to admit that the Seminoles were not playing the way that they should, and said that they should be both upset and frustrated by it.
Same goes for an anxious fan base now looking ahead at FSU’s nine remaining games.
“Our fans have every right to be upset,” Taggart said. “There’s an expectation here. There’s a standard here. And we’re not living up to it.”
Not yet, anyway.
But Taggart also has no plans to stay stuck in neutral.
In all of his previous stops, Taggart has dealt with difficult starts. His first Western Kentucky team began its season 0-6 on the way to a 2-10 finish. At South Florida, Taggart started with four straight losses before finishing 2-10. Even in his one year at Oregon, Taggart had to navigate a 4-4 start before winning three of his last four games.
In each instance, Taggart weathered the early pain and frustration on the way to better days ahead. It was those better days that allowed Taggart to climb through the coaching ranks, and that eventually led him to Tallahassee.
Safe to say he knows a thing or two about dealing with adversity in his own right.
Asked how to do that, Taggart replied:
“Trusting the process and staying focused on what we’re doing. Staying focused, staying locked into the plan and not wavering.
“Eventually, the guys get it and things get going.”
In the meantime, Taggart has a message for Florida State fans.
“Don’t give up on this football team,” he said. “Please, don’t give up on this football team. If some do, we understand. And we’ll work our tail off to getthem back.”

Noles Start Fast, Pull Away For 37-19 Win Over NIU.
by Tim Linafelt
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Better hold off on those eulogies.
The Florida State football team, criticized all week and ridiculed on ESPN’s College Gameday preview show on Saturday morning, got off to a hot start and then pulled away late for a welcome, 37-19 victory over Northern Illinois at Doak Campbell Stadium.
While coach Willie Taggart will no doubt have plenty on his to-do list for next week’s practices, there was still a lot to like.
The Seminoles (2-2), stifled for much of last week’s tilt at Syracuse, flashed what was undoubtedly the most tantalizing glimpse of Taggart’s “Lethal Simplicity” offense yet: 473 yards on 89 plays and an ample number of big gains that kept the Huskies on their heels.
That includes a 78-yard touchdown pass from Deondre Francois to Tamorrion Terry which snuffed out NIU’s comeback bid early in the fourth quarter.
“I just think our players decided enough is enough,” Taggart said, “and that they were going to hold each other accountable to practicing better and to be better in meetings.”
“And it paid off.”
Did it ever.
Francois completed 23 of 31 passes for a season-high 352 yards and two touchdowns, while FSU’s running back duo of Cam Akers and Jacques Patrick combined for 120 yards and a score.
FSU’s defense, meanwhile, limited the Huskies (1-3) to just 221 total yards and only six yards on the ground.
Throw in what was likely FSU’s best special teams performance of the season – kicker Ricky Aguayo made all three of his field-goal tries, including a 50-yarder – and the Seminoles have a win that could perhaps turn into something of a turning point as they get to the meat of their ACC schedule.
“Offense, defense and special teams, we all feed off everybody’s energy,” senior defensive tackle Fred Jones said. “So when everybody’s up, we know we’ll stop them.”
It was clear from the Seminoles’ first possession that this game would be different than the ones that preceded it.
After receiving the opening kickoff, FSU was sharp and efficient in marching down the field for a 13-play, 75-yard drive that ended with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Francois to Patrick.
Better make that from Francois to Keith Gavin to Patrick. Francois’ pass was originally intended for Gavin in the middle of the end zone, but the ball deflected off of Gavin’s hands, took a big bounce across the field and landed in the waiting arms of a wide-open Patrick.
Never mind the details, FSU had a touchdown and its first, first-half lead of the season.
“I’m glad Jacques was there to make the play on it,” said Gavin, who finished with career highs in catches (six) and receiving yards (93).
“I didn’t really realize what happened at first. … But I saw it once I got up, and I was happy.”
Gavin and the 65,633 in attendance got even happier a few moments later. Because after the Seminoles’ defense forced a three-and-out on NIU’s ensuing possession, Francois and Co. were at it again with an eight-play, 70-yard scoring drive that made it 14-0.
This time, it was Cam Akers bouncing outside for a seven-yard touchdown, his first of the season.
“Those first two drives showed us what we can do and what we’re capable of,” Francois said. “So now that we’ve got those two drives in, and we know how to start fast, there’s no excuse for us not to start fast every game.”
FSU’s defense no doubt likes the sound of that.
Granted their first healthy lead of the season, coordinator Harlon Barnett’s group responded with a fast, physical and aggressive game that saw a number of heavy hits delivered to the Huskies running backs and receivers.
The Seminoles forced three-and-outs on each of NIUs first three possessions, limited the Huskies to only seven yards in the first quarter and finished the game with four sacks – two from blitzing cornerback Kyle Meyers.
“It was great,” sophomore defensive tackle Marvin Wilson said. “(The offense) came out strong, so that put a little ‘oomph’ in us, just to play harder. It made us play a bit looser, too. Not as tensed up, you’re not thinking as much.”
But whereas most of the first half could hardly have gone better for the Seminoles, the second left Taggart with plenty of talking points for when the team hits the practice fields again.
Because after setting the stage for a would-be blowout, FSU was slowed down by a collection of familiar foes: penalty flags, turnovers and a fierce opposing pass rush.
FSU fumbled five times, lost three of them, and threw one interception that had Taggart scratching his head.
Twice, those turnovers turned into NIU touchdowns, and what would have been third was wiped out when Huskies receiver Jauan Wesley stepped out of bounds before hauling in a pass in the end zone.
And, after being flagged just once in the first half, the Seminoles committed eight infractions in the second, bringing their season penalty total to 36.
“We’ve got to take care of the football better and play a cleaner ball game,” Taggart said. “Against a really football good team, you’re not going to win games playing the way we did today.”
Maybe not, but, in a sense, Saturday’s outcome might have been a perfect outcome for Taggart – a double-digit win, with plenty of room to improve.
The Seminoles will get another chance to take a step forward next week, when they’ll visit a Louisville team reeling after a 27-3 loss at Virginia.
“Wasn’t necessarily the best game, but it was a good win for our guys,” Taggart said. “Our football team got better today, something we needed to do.”

Comeback Complete! Football Storms Back For 28-24 Win Over UL.
by Tim Linafelt, Senior Writer
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After every unbelievable thing that happened here Saturday afternoon – after Louisville inexplicably threw a pass when a run might have sealed the game, after that pass ended up in the arms of safety A.J. Westbrook, and after Deondre Francois hit Nyqwan Murray for a 58-yard touchdown that erased a 14-point deficit and gave the Seminoles a 28-24 victory – FSU coach Willie Taggart was asked a simple question.
“Do you feel like you kind of stole a victory here?”
It was hardly unreasonable. The Seminoles seemed dead to rights multiple times on Saturday afternoon, never more so than when the Cardinals converted a short third down with a seven-yard pass to FSU’s 19-yard line with two minutes remaining.
Taggart, though, didn’t see it that way.
“I wouldn’t say we stole it,” he answered. “I thought we took a victory.”
And why not?
After all, even with Louisville’s decision to throw – one that will have its fans and media grousing all week – Westbrook still had to make the catch.
The Seminoles (3-2, 1-2 ACC) still needed to travel 81 yards in 1:56, Francois still needed to make a sharp throw over the middle and Murray still needed to complete the grab, shake off a defender and then outrace the Louisville defense.
And FSU still had to hold Louisville (2-3, 0-2) in check for 36 more seconds, which it did for good when Stanford Samuels III picked off Jawon Pass’ fourth-down throw.
An unlikely win? Given the circumstances, sure.
But a stolen win? No, not in Taggart’s mind.
“They turned the ball over, we had to drive the field to score,” he said. “We went down and got a victory. We won it.”
That’s not to say that he and the Seminoles weren’t surprised by how things played out.
With first-and-10 at the FSU 19-yard line, and about two minutes on the clock, virtually everyone inside Cardinal Stadium expected coach Bobby Petrino to run the ball, drain the clock – FSU had two of its three timeouts remaining – and, at worst, kick a field goal that would force the Seminoles to drive the length of the field in order to win.
That’s not what happened.
Instead, Pass pulled back a run-pass option and, looking for his tight end, threw a pass right into Westbrook’s chest.
“He threw it, and I was like, ‘Wow, he really threw it,’” Westbrook said. “I don’t know why he threw it, but oh well.”
“I was surprised and happy,” Taggart added. “I mean, I figured they were going to run the ball and make us use our timeouts and get out of there. It was great. I’m glad they did it.”
Petrino, for his part, said after the game he anticipated the Seminoles defending the run and hoped to catch them off guard.
“I look back on it, and I guess I should have run the ball,” Petrino said.
Five plays later, Francois hit Murray for a touchdown that quieted all but the section of Florida State fans in the corner of the north end zone.
It was the last of a career-high four touchdowns for Francois, who completed 16 of 27 passes for 294 yards. The redshirt junior wasn’t sacked and didn’t throw an interception for the first time this season.
“He was just locked in to what we had to do,” Taggart said. “And the receivers made plays for him.”
For nearly 45 minutes, this one looked to follow a similar script to FSU’s last road trip: An early deficit followed by a slow, frustrating march to a loss.
Louisville opened the scoring, took a 21-7 lead into the break and, despite sputtering in the second half, seemed mostly in control.
But that changed in a big hurry late in the third quarter, when Francois took a first-down snap, faked a handoff and threw deep to a wide open Tamorrion Terry.
Fifty-five yards later, Terry had his fourth touchdown of the season, and the Seminoles had a welcome surge of momentum.
That set the stage for all that madness that followed.
“That was big,” Taggart said. “… We felt like (Terry) could beat the corner over there. And, actually, the corner did a good job with the outside read. But he beat him with speed.”
Playing under some pressure for the first time since the first quarter, Louisville added a field goal that made it 24-14, their only points of the second half.
Francois wasn’t finished. He connected with Tre’ McKitty for a beautiful, 25-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline, and then again to Murray for the decisive touchdown.
Francois started 8 of 8 in the second half and threw for 214 of his 294 yards in the final two quarters. Murray, meanwhile, caught six passes for 114 yards and two scores, while Terry added 71 yards on three catches.
That includes a crucial grab in traffic that moved the chains on fourth-and-3 and set up McKitty’s touchdown.
“It’s a big win,” Terry said. “It’s a comforting win, too.”
Exactly what impact this win has on the rest of the season remains to be seen, although there were several positive signs. FSU cut down on its turnovers (one) and penalties (seven for 55 yards), and its offensive line had undoubtedly its best game of the year.
And while there were still some issues to address – the running game still couldn’t get going, and FSU converted just 3 of 13 third downs – the Seminoles are certain of this much:
Their looming road trip to No. 16 Miami looks much more inviting with this win in the books.
“Any time you’re going into a big rivalry game like this, you want to go in with some momentum,” Eberle said. “Going in at 3-2 is a whole lot better than going in at 2-3.
“The guys are excited. The team is focused. We’re locked in, ready to go down there and show the Hurricanes what we’ve got.”

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Even after a heartbreaking loss to the Miami Hurricanes, the latest in a series full of them, Willie Taggart saw clear signs of progress from his Florida State football team here on Saturday night.
And, for nearly three quarters, those signs were obvious:
An aggressive defense that had the Seminoles on the right side of the turnover margin. Improved special teams that accounted for a punt-return touchdown and two tough field goals. And a creative offense that was able to stay ahead of the chains and keep Miami’s defenders at bay.
It was perhaps FSU’s most encouraging stretch of the season, and the Seminoles were rewarded in kind with a 20-point lead that had a packed Hard Rock Stadium reeling in stunned silence.
“Our guys were playing well,” FSU coach Willie Taggart said. “Probably by far the best we played all year.”
But with progress sometimes comes pain, and there was plenty of that in the Seminoles’ locker room, too.
Because after building that lead and moving well on their way to what would have been a season-changing victory, FSU saw turnovers and penalties allow the No. 17 Hurricanes back into the game and, eventually, lead to a 28-27 loss.
After running off seven consecutive victories over Miami from 2010-16, FSU has lost consecutive games to the Hurricanes for the first time since 2004.
That’s also the last time Miami beat FSU in South Florida. The Hurricanes have won eight one-point games over the Seminoles, the first of which came in 1959.
“I guess that’s why it’s really frustrating, I did see signs of progress,” Taggart said. “But we didn’t finish. We came here to win, and we didn’t win.”
For much of the afternoon, Florida State perfectly followed its script for an upset.
The Seminoles had taken care of the ball, had made Miami’s freshman quarterback look like a freshman and got two important field goals from kicker Ricky Aguayo, including a 53-yarder at the end of the second quarter.
By the time D.J. Matthews took a punt return 74 yards for a touchdown early in the third, the Seminoles seemed headed for a lopsided victory that would have reverberated around the college football world.
But what took most of the afternoon to build took only a few minutes to unravel.
Thanks to two turnovers deep in FSU territory, one a strip-sack fumble and one an interception, the Hurricanes trimmed their deficit from 20 points to six in the span of just 42 seconds.
And – in what might be considered another sign of progress – the Seminoles at that time seemed to have an answer when they connected on a 42-yard double-pass from Deondre Francois to Matthews, and from Matthews to Keith Gavin.
Gavin, all alone down the left sideline, had an easy touchdown. But officials ruled that Francois’ first throw was a forward pass, which made Matthews’ throw illegal.
The Seminoles were penalized five yards, punted a play later and the Hurricanes took their first and only lead on their ensuing possession.
TV replays suggested that Francois’ pass was close enough to a lateral to merit a review, but Taggart said that he was told otherwise.
“He said it was in front of him,” Taggart said. “It wasn’t close enough (for review).”
Center Alec Eberle was so busy running downfield to celebrate with Gavin, that he didn’t even see the yellow flags on the field.
Right call or not, there was no denying its impact.
“It hurts,” Eberle said. “A touchdown would have helped a lot. But it is what it is.”
“I saw a touchdown,” added defensive end Brian Burns, who had three tackles for loss and forced two fumbles.
Despite that swing of events, there was still nearly 12 minutes to play when Miami moved ahead, and the Seminoles had three opportunities with the ball during that time.
But the Hurricanes’ second-ranked defense, which had looked ordinary for much of the first half, tightened up and forced three punts to effectively seal the game.
All told, FSU managed 200 yards of offense, 45 which came in the second half.
“We played a pretty solid game, pretty solid first half,” Eberle said. “We were moving guys off the ball. We just had little hiccups here and there.”
Maybe, then, it’s a good time for FSU’s bye week. The Seminoles went toe-to-toe with the No. 17 team in the country, felt like they should have won the game, and have several positives on which to build as they move into the second half of their season.
And Taggart’s agenda for the next two weeks is simple:
“Our guys know how to play football,” he said. “We have to teach them how to win again.”
But after another close loss to Miami, and after feeling emotions shared by FSU football players across multiple generations, there weren’t many in the Seminoles’ locker room that were ready for a week off.
They’ll have to wait until Oct. 20, when Wake Forest visits Doak Campbell Stadium.
“I wish,” defensive end Brian Burns said, “I could get out and play againÀHšH

No Homecoming Wake: Football Rips Deacs.
by Tim Linafelt, Senior Writer
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – It was only the first quarter and, given the final score, maybe it didn’t matter all that much.
But there’s no denying this: Wake Forest built an early 10-point lead that had mostly silenced the homecoming crowd at Doak Campbell Stadium and, after driving to the Seminoles’ 30-yard line, had a chance for more.
Rather than attempt a 47-yard field goal, however, Wake coach Dave Clawson kept his offense on the field. FSU defensive end Brian Burns then burst off the edge of the line, brought down Wake quarterback Sam Hartman for a 10-yard loss, and in an instant, changed the complexion of the game.
“That’s just what our team needed – for somebody to make a play for us,” FSU coach Willie Taggart said. “I think it all started with Burns’ play. It seemed like it kind of woke us up.”
And in a hurry. Six plays and 60 yards later, Cam Akers crossed the goal line for the first of 38 straight points that had the Seminoles well on their way to a 38-17 victory.
From there, there were plenty of big plays – including a 58-yard touchdown run from Akers, a 33-yard touchdown catch by Nyqwan Murray and the first scoring grab of freshman Tre’Shaun Harrison’s career.
But none were bigger than Burns’ sack.
“When he made it, the sideline became electric,” linebacker Dontavious Jackson said.
“Brian changed the whole momentum of the game,” defensive tackle Marvin Wilson added. “He came up on that big fourth down, the offense got the ball, came down and scored and the rest of the game was history.”
With their offense in gear, the Seminoles (4-3, 2-3 ACC) took advantage of an overmatched Wake Forest defense for season highs in points, total yards (485) passing yards (353) and average yards per rush attempt (4.6).
Quarterback Deondre Francois threw for 353 yards and two touchdowns, Murray added 131 yards on eight catches and Akers had his first multi-score game of the season.
The sophomore running back carried 13 times for 98 yards, 58 of which came via a long touchdown run on FSU’s first drive of the third quarter.
It was Akers’ longest run since an 85-yarder in the season opener against Virginia Tech.
“I think I needed that touchdown run a lot,” Akers said. “It helped me in getting the weight off my shoulders, just to break a long one. I am used to scoring touchdowns.”
But while there was plenty to like about the offense’s production, the day, in many ways, belonged to Harlon Barnett’s defense.
Not only did Burns turn things around with his sack, but defensive back Stanford Samuels III picked up his counterparts with an interception just moments after receiver Keith Gavin fumbled into the end zone following a long gain.
Samuels returned his second interception of the season to the Wake 9-yard line, and a few moments later Jacques Patrick plunged in for a two-yard, go-ahead score that just a few moments before had seemed awfully far away.
“I went to (Gavin) and told him I got him,” Samuels said. “He said, ‘Appreciate it,’ but he didn’t have to say anything. That’s my brother. … For me to be able to make a play for team after something tragic like that happened, it was big.”
After surrendering 10 points and 134 yards on Wake’s first three drives – and watching the Demon Deacons run an eye-popping 41 plays in the first quarter – the Seminoles made a stunning about-face.
Because after scoring a field goal that gave them a 10-0 lead, Wake’s next 11 possessions went like this: eight punts, two turnovers on downs and an interception.
With those first three drives from removed from its total, Wake (3-4, 0-3) mustered just 235 yards and 3.2 yards per play.
The change, Taggart said, came from a simple adjustment.
“We stopped substituting so much,” he said. “They were going up-tempo, and when we (stopped substituting), it allowed our guys to get set up and be in position to be able to make plays.”
Never mind that as the Seminoles largely kept their same group of 11 players on the field, Wake’s hurry-up offense ran a staggering 104 plays, the most ever by an FSU opponent.
“That’s when you’ve got to dig deep,” Samuels said. “That’s when that dog comes out.”
Deacons quarterback Hartman completed 47 percent of his passes before giving way to reserve Jamie Newman in the second half. Star receiver Greg Dortch, perhaps still limited from an injury suffered two weeks ago, was held in check for 24 yards on four catches.
With Wake sputtering, the Seminoles racked up six sacks – including two each from Burns and Josh Kaindoh, as well as one from Janarius Robinson and Emmett Rice – and nine tackles for loss. Twenty-four Seminoles recorded at least one tackle, with Samuels’ eight leading the way.
All told, it was a comprehensive ACC victory and one the Seminoles felt was especially important given what’s on the horizon.
FSU hosts No. 3 Clemson next week at noon. While the Seminoles were dealing with Wake Forest, the Tigers were busy throttling No. 16 North Carolina State, 41-7.
After that, FSU will travel to NC State, and then to No. 4 Notre Dame.
“We needed this,” Wilson said. “Right now, we’re like fifth in the ACC (Atlantic Division). So we needed that to pump us up. We’re trying to go the rest of the season and win out, so that was a big first step.”

Noles Stunned By Tigers’ Second Quarter Onslaught.
by Tim Linafelt
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Earlier this week, Florida State coach Willie Taggart acknowledged that Clemson is the class of the Atlantic Coast Conference and that, for FSU to return to prominence, it must first catch up with the Tigers.
The Seminoles now know exactly how far they have to go.
FSU played the No. 2 Tigers to a scoreless first quarter, but Clemson and star quarterback Trevor Lawrence quickly found their stride.
Lawrence threw for 314 yards and four touchdowns as Clemson used a 28-point second quarter to spark a 59-10 victory at Doak Campbell Stadium.
FSU’s 49-point margin of defeat is its worst at home and tied for its largest ever. The Seminoles (4-4, 2-4 ACC) have road dates at No. 22 North Carolina State and No. 3 Notre Dame up next, then will close out the regular season at home with Boston College and No. 9 Florida.
Despite the final score, the Seminoles had a few early opportunities to make this one look a little different.
FSU’s defense put forth an inspired effort in the first quarter and forced three punts from Clemson’s first three drives.
But a combination of dropped passes, snapping miscues and penalty flags ensured that the Seminoles couldn’t take advantage of Clemson’s slow start.
Fittingly, it was a Florida State penalty that allowed the Tigers to break through.
Moments after surrendering a 41-yard completion – Clemson’s first big play of the day – the Seminoles seemed to swing momentum back in their favor by holding the Tigers to a 40-yard goal attempt.
And the tide definitely turned FSU’s way when Clemson’s Greg Huegel pushed his kick wide right. But a roughing-the-kicker flag on FSU’s Stanford Samuels III – on a play in which Samuels didn’t appear to make contact with Huegel – gave the Tigers a first down at the Seminoles’ 12-yard line.
Two plays later, Lawrence found Hunter Renfrow in the end zone for the first of 45 consecutive Clemson points.
The Seminoles were penalized 15 times for 154 yards and punted 12 times.
Trailing 45-0, Ricky Aguayo got the Seminoles on the board with a 35-yard field goal late in the third quarter, and James Blackman later connected with freshman Keyshawn Helton for a 73-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter that provided the final margin.
Blackman took over late for starter Deondre Francois, who completed 17 of 36 passes for 180 yards and one interception. Running backs Jacques Patrick and Cam Akers combined for 24 yards on 18 carries, while Tamorrion Terry led the receivers with 55 yards.

Blackman Sparks Offense, But Football Falls At NC State.
by Tim Linafelt, Senior Writer
RALEIGH, N.C. – A new starting quarterback and a new play-caller gave Florida State’s offense a welcome and obvious boost.
Neither were enough to overcome North Carolina State’s Ryan Finley.
A fifth-year senior and perhaps the most NFL-ready quarterback prospect in the ACC, Finley threw for 240 yards and three touchdowns as NC State raced out to a quick lead and held off a brief FSU rally for a 47-28 victory at Carter-Finley Stadium.
After the game, coach Willie Taggart said he was pleased with his team’s effort, energy and engagement on the sideline – all of which were a step forward from last week’s loss to Clemson.
The next, biggest step, though, is for all of those things to translate to the scoreboard.
“I love this football team,” Taggart said. “I love our guys. They’re trying to do the things we ask them to do. …
“Our guys know how to play football. We’ve got to teach them to win.”
With offensive coordinator Walt Bell calling plays for the first time this season, sophomore James Blackman threw for a career-high 421 yards and four touchdowns in his 2018 starting debut.
And the Seminoles’ offense, despite not getting much help from its rushing attack, picked up a healthy 6.5 yards per play that was more than a full yard better than NC State’s 5.4.
Taggart said he handed play-calling duties to Bell in an effort to better serve the entire team – not just the offense.
And, “for the most part,” Taggart said, “I thought (Bell) did a good job.”
But aided by overwhelming advantages in average starting field position (plus-19 yards) and time of possession (37:30-22:30), NC State made sure it didn’t matter much.
Blessed with short fields for much of the afternoon, the Wolfpack scored on nine of their first 11 drives, including four straight to start the second half.
That turned what had been a relatively manageable halftime deficit – 27-14 – into a more lopsided affair throughout the second half.
NC State punted just twice, did not commit a turnover and enjoyed a combined 43.7-percent conversion rate on third and fourth downs.
“We have to play better ball on defense, Taggart said. “The plays are there to be made. They need to make a play on the ball.”
The Seminoles, meanwhile, hurt themselves with 13 penalties and two giveaways – a fumble that halted a promising early drive and an interception early in the second half as they were attempting a comeback.
Dating back to last week’s game against Clemson, the Seminoles have been flagged 28 times and are minus-three in turnover margin.
“Silly penalties and turnovers, you can’t have those things,” Taggart said. “Those things make you lose.”
With so many infractions, some were bound to come at big moments.
There were special teams penalties that led to poor field position. There were offensive penalties that wiped out big gains. And there were defensive penalties that extended NC State drives.
At one point, FSU defenders were called for pass interference in the end zone on back-to-back plays.
Some of those penalties were obvious. Others – such as a late-hit call on freshman Jaden Woodbey, when neither he nor the NC State ball-carrier seemed to have heard a whistle – had the Seminoles fuming.
“Penalties are draining,” Burns said. “I mean, you get a big play … you get the play called back. It just brings the whole team down.”
A bright spot for much of the season, receiver Tamorrion Terry continued to provide a silver lining with 142 yards and two touchdowns on just five catches. The redshirt freshman almost singlehandedly got FSU on the board in the second quarter, hooking up with Blackman for gains of 40 and 35 yards on back-to-back deep balls down the right sideline.
Seven of Terry’s 22 catches this season have gone for touchdowns.
Sophomore D.J. Matthews added 10 catches for 133 yards, including a late 31-yard touchdown that provided the final margin.
“I wish everyone played like (Terry),” Taggart said. “He made plays out there for us. It was good to see that.”
As for Blackman, Taggart said that he was pleased with the sophomore’s performance and was happy with the way he spread the ball around. Beyond that, though, Taggart wouldn’t make any declarations on whether Blackman or Deondre Francois would start next week at Notre Dame.
“I was encouraged by the way James threw the ball,” Taggart said. “He did a great job.”
With a 4-5 record and three games to play, FSU finds itself without much margin for error in its quest to make a 37th consecutive bowl game. The Seminoles visit No. 3 Notre Dame next week (7:30 p.m., NBC) and then will finish the regular season with home dates against Boston College and Florida.
It’s a difficult stretch, but one that Blackman expects the Seminoles to navigate – regardless of his role moving forward.
“You’ve got to come find a way,” he said. “It’s always about finding a way.”

Football Falls To Irish In South Bend.
by Tim Linafelt, Senior Writer
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – In 2003, the Florida State football team went to Notre Dame and dealt the Fighting Irish a humbling, lopsided defeat.
Fifteen years later, the Seminoles returned to South Bend and the Fighting Irish returned the favor.
Notre Dame running back Dexter Williams ran for 202 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Brandon Wimbush added three scores through the air as the Fighting Irish cruised to a 42-13 victory on a below-freezing night at Notre Dame Stadium.
Williams is the first running back to run for 200 yards against Florida State since 1982. And his effort overshadowed an otherwise encouraging effort from FSU’s Cam Akers, who had his best game in a month with two touchdowns and 63 yards on 12 carries.
“We came in and said we wanted to start fast,” coach Willie Taggart said. “And we didn’t.”
It wasn’t for lack of effort.
After winning the coin toss, the Seminoles chose to receive the opening kickoff – a departure from Taggart’s usual philosophy.
But rather than get the ball, march down the field and score a touchdown that might have silenced the 76,622 in attendance, FSU turned the ball over on its second play from scrimmage.
That happened when a pass from Deondre Francois bounced off of tight end Tre’ McKitty and into the arms of Notre Dame’s Nick Coleman. Coleman returned his interception 27 yards to the Florida State three-yard line and, two plays later Wimbush connected with Miles for a touchdown.
“(The interception) was a dropped pass, and they caught it,” Taggart said.
Things then snowballed quickly. The Seminoles went three-and-out on their ensuing possession and the Irish then embarked on a 14-play, 81-yard touchdown drive that made it 14-0.
And on Florida State’s very next play, Akers fumbled an exchange, the ball fell to the ground and the Irish recovered at the FSU 14-yard line.
The Seminoles’ defense held Notre Dame to a field goal, but, by then, the Irish had a 17-point lead before Florida State had a first down.
“We had an interception early in the game and a turnover early in the game on our side of the field,” Taggart said. “And against a good football team, you can’t do that. And for our football team, we definitely can’t do that right now.”
The game was Florida State’s third consecutive against a ranked opponent. And anyone who saw the first two would recognize the third:
A slow start on offense leads to a double-digit deficit. The deficit leads to pressing too hard in all three phases. The pressing leads to mistakes. The mistakes lead to a bigger deficit.
The Seminoles must flip that script if they’re going to salvage their season and reach a bowl game.
FSU now has no margin for error in that quest. At 4-6, the Seminoles must beat both No. 17 Boston College and No. 15 Florida at home to reach the postseason.
“It’s very tough,” sophomore defensive tackle Marvin Wilson said, “knowing that you’re going out there and putting your all into practice (and) coming up, not just short, but by a lot.
“I’m going to keep my faith in God and come back ready to work. Just like all my teammates, we’re going to get this fixed.”
Notre Dame’s victory is just its third in nine tries against Florida State. The Seminoles entered the game with a .714 winning percentage against the Irish, the highest ever for an opponent to face Notre Dame at least five times.
And the Irish mostly exploited FSU’s rush defense to get one back on the ledger.
Led by Jackson’s big day, Notre Dame racked up 365 yards on the ground, 224 of which came in the second half.
The Irish didn’t throw a single pass after the 8:04 mark of the third quarter.
“It’s very frustrating,” said linebacker Dontavious Jackson, who intercepted Notre Dame’s last pass attempt. “I know we’re better than that, than what we’re putting on the field.”
The Seminoles’ run defense is one problem.
The pass rush is another.
After hovering near the top of the national sack leaderboard a few weeks ago, the Seminoles have now gone three consecutive games without bringing down an opposing quarterback.
The official box score shows that Notre Dame’s Wimbush, making his first start in more six games, was hurried just twice.
“Teams are starting to scheme us really well up front,” Wilson said. “It’s something where we’ve got to get back in our bag, add some new moves, get better.”
The Seminoles intend to get better, both in that regard and many others.
Taggart knows it’s no small task, particularly with an upcoming game against a Boston College team that gave Clemson its toughest game in a month.
But the only way through is to go forward.
“No one needs to hold their heads down or anything,” he said. “We pick our heads up and keep working and try to find a way to get out of this storm that we’re in.
“And that’s what we’re going to do.”

Francois, Terry Lift Noles To ‘An Incredible Win’ Over BC.
by Tim Linafelt, Senior Writer
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Given the ball, 2:53 on the clock and the weight of a 36-year bowl streak on his shoulders, Deondre Francois looked to a pair of future Hall-of-Famers for inspiration.
“I just figured, ‘What would Tom Brady do in this situation?’” Florida State’s quarterback thought to himself. “‘What would Aaron Rodgers do in this situation?’”
The answer, it seems, is to throw it deep to the 6-foot-4 receiver.
With Francois channeling his inner Brady and Tamorrion Terry playing the part of Randy Moss, Florida State’s offense struck for a devastating, 74-yard touchdown pass down the middle of the field that lifted the Seminoles to a 22-21 victory over No. 22 Boston College at Doak Campbell Stadium.
As a result, Florida State improved to 5-6, snapped a three-game losing streak and gave itself a chance to extend its NCAA-record bowl streak to a 37th consecutive season.
All the Seminoles have to do is beat rival Florida, 8-3 and ranked 15th, for a sixth straight year next week at home.
“An incredible win for our guys,” FSU coach Willie Taggart said after leading the Seminoles to their first victory over a ranked opponent since the 2016 Orange Bowl.
“It means a lot to our program. Hopefully it’s the defining moment that we all knew could happen.”
Francois’ only touchdown of the night sealed a game that hung in the balance just moments before.
On the strength of a plodding running game and an offense that converted 7 of 19 third downs, the Eagles led for most of the afternoon, and held both the ball and a five-point advantage as time wound down on the fourth quarter.
But faced with a fourth-and-1 at Florida State’s 40-yard line, BC coach Steve Addazio left 6-foot, 245-pound running back AJ Dillon on the sideline and opted to punt.
The Eagles had already converted three of five fourth-down attempts, and, had they picked up one more, might have all but sealed the game.
Instead, BC gave the Seminoles the opening they needed.
“I smelled blood,” Francois said. “I was ready to go.”
Three plays later, following an eight-yard run from Cam Akers and a five-yard quarterback keeper, Francois went deep to Terry, who was one-on-one with a 6-foot-1 cornerback.
As he has all season, Terry made it look easy. He raced past his defender, caught the ball in stride then stepped over a weak tackle attempt before racing into the end zone.
And when he crossed the goal line, Doak Campbell Stadium roared as loud as it had in months.
“Every time I know it’s one-on-one, I think it’s a touchdown,” Terry said. “Nobody can guard me, and I know that for sure.”
Who would argue? Eight of Terry’s 32 catches this season have gone for touchdowns, including scores of 78, 74, 55 and 35 yards.
He already owns FSU’s record for freshman receiving yards, and with one more score he’ll tie Greg Carr for the school’s all-time mark in freshman receiving touchdowns.
“He’s done it week in and week out,” Francois said. “When it’s man-to-man coverage on him, that’s the guy that will go get the ball no matter where you put it. He has a second gear. He’s got a third gear.”
Asked after the game about his decision to punt, BC’s Addazio said that he regretted the outcome but not the choice.
“Your heart is like, ‘I should have gone for the first down,’” Addazio said. “But honestly, thinking about it, it really wasn’t the right thing to do.”
Francois finished with 322 yards, a touchdown and a pair of interceptions while freshman Keyshawn Helton, making his first start, caught a team-high six passes for 72 yards.
And running back Cam Akers continued his recent upward trend with a 14-carry, 110-yard night that put him over the 100-yard mark for the first time this season.
That includes a 55-yard scamper in the fourth quarter in which Akers broke a tackle, lost his balance and nearly went to the ground before steadying himself and making his way to the left sideline.
That play led to a 37-yard Ricky Aguayo field goal – one of three – that kept the Seminoles within striking distance.
“You’ve just got to keep faith, keep believing and keep playing,” Akers said. “At the running back position, it’s bound to happen — big runs, big plays. You’ve just got to keeping trusting and keep playing ball.”
Florida State’s defense, meanwhile, did a more than admirable job in slowing BC’s Dillon.
Yes, Dillon had 116 yards and two touchdowns. But it took him a season-high 37 carries to get there.
And seemingly every time Dillon touched the ball, there was an FSU defender – or two, or three or sometimes four – ready to meet him.
“That was the first time I saw our defense fly around to the ball,” Taggart said. “It wasn’t just one guy hitting him. It was two, three, four guys flying to the ball.
“To me, that’s Florida State football.”
Two other things that define Florida State football? Playing in bowl games and, more recently, beating the Florida Gators.
The Seminoles have played in the postseason in every year since 1981. And they’ve won every game against Florida since 2012.
Perhaps it’s only appropriate, then, that doing the latter next week will ensure that the Seminoles do the former later this year.
“We needed (a win) in the worst way,” Taggart said. “And we’ve got one more to go, against our arch-rival next week.”

Clock Strikes 12 On Streaks, Noles’ Football Season.
by Tim Linafelt
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – With two short sentences, Willie Taggart summed up his thoughts, the thoughts of his team and the thoughts of the entire Florida State fan base:
“Disappointing game. Disappointing season.”
There’s a lot more that can describe Florida State’s 41-14 loss to No. 13 Florida on Saturday afternoon, and the 5-7 season that it concluded.
But, to an extent, that says enough.
The Seminoles came into their regular season finale with designs on upsetting the Gators, securing a bowl bid and keeping alive hope for a winning season.
Those goals are all gone now, as is a campaign that not even three months ago had Florida State fans brimming with optimism.
FSU’s five-year winning streak against Florida is over. As is the Seminoles’ NCAA-record, 36-year consecutive bowl streak and their streak of 41 straight winning seasons.
And Taggart didn’t mince words when asked about what that meant.
“It’s unacceptable here at Florida State,” he said. “We’ve got a program that prides itself on winning, and we didn’t get it done. “Very disappointed, in just the way we performed today and throughout the year.”
Indeed, Florida State’s problems against the Gators were the same problems that hindered them all season.
The Seminoles committed 10 penalties, turned the ball over three times and allowed five sacks of quarterback Deondre Francois. Their penalties were as numerous as they were destructive.
One procedural infraction wiped out what would have been a 70-yard touchdown.
An unsportsmanlike conduct foul gifted the Gators a first down after the Seminoles’ defense earned a third-down stop.
And other flags simply kept the Seminoles’ offense behind the chains, limiting their opportunities to get in rhythm.
“We do things that cause you to lose football games like that,” Taggart said. “It’s third down, we were ready to get them off the field and then we’re not tough enough to walk away. … You look at some of the games we lost, and the way we lost is (that) we weren’t disciplined.
“That’s what good football teams do, and we didn’t do that.”
Even for all that went wrong, the Seminoles went into halftime trailing by only six points. And had that 70-yard touchdown counted – a pretty catch-and-run from Cam Akers – the Seminoles might have had the lead.
The Gators, however, unleashed a stunning second-half outburst that turned what had been a close game into a rout.
UF quarterback Feleipe Franks, a native of nearby Crawfordville, Fla., threw touchdown passes on three of Florida’s first four possessions in the second half, and running back Jordan Scarlett added another score late in the fourth quarter.
The Seminoles offered one answer – a four-yard touchdown run from Francois that made it 27-14 – but otherwise couldn’t keep up. Florida finished with advantages in total yards (536-293), first downs (24-15), third-down conversions (5-15, 1-14) and time of possession (36:02-23:53).
“I think they amped up the energy when they went down and scored,” Taggart added. “They gained a lot of momentum. And that’s what happens when you get momentum – it gets going. That was critical.”
That brought Taggart to another season-long theme. Too often, he said, the Seminoles didn’t respond well in the face of adversity. There are examples in each of Florida State’s losses this season, and it’s a problem that Taggart believes stretches back to at least last year.
Correcting it still remains near the top of his to-do list.
“We had times where we did (respond well) this year, and good things happened for us,” he said. “But there were other times where we didn’t, and it was just like the wheels fell off.”
Francois totaled 195 yards (151 passing) and two touchdowns, while receiver Tamorrion Terry added three catches for 78 yards.
Terry and senior Nyqwan Murray finished the season tied atop the team leaderboard with 744 receiving yards.
“(Florida) kept moving the ball. We couldn’t move the ball,” Francois said. “Then when we could, we would have a big play and then we’d get it called back by a stupid penalty. Which ultimately means that we’re undisciplined.”
That’s a painful reality, one of a few that the Seminoles must address in the weeks and months ahead.
Francois fought back tears as he discussed the season, saying that it was “cutting deep,” and that it hurts “to end the bowl streak with me being the starting quarterback.”
Taggart shares his quarterback’s frustration, but he’s also steady in his belief that the Seminoles will keep moving in the right direction.
That starts tonight, when he sits down to begin evaluating where the program stands after his first year on the job.
And it continues in earnest on Sunday, when Taggart and his staff turn their gaze to the recruiting trail.
There’s plenty of work to be done, and it’s all done with a singular goal in mind: Return the Seminoles to former glory, and one day make a disappointing game and a disappointing 2018 season feel like nothing more than a speedbump on the way there.
“We didn’t get it done,” Taggart said. “But we can grow from it. And we will grow from it.
“I was brought here to get this program back right and that’s what we’ll do.”
