FSU finds a quarterback in 38-12 win over Tulane.
NEW ORLEANS, LA - Swatting away well early - and better later - Florida State won a football game over Tulane 38-12 here Saturday. Perhaps bigger, it found itself a quarterback.
Danny McManus, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound sophomore starting his first game, shrugged off the groin injury that had plagued him most of preseason practice and played with the presence of a veteran.
He passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more. But there was more.
He was 15-for-19 with passing that got 191 yards, but there was more. Eleven of his first 14 passes were complete, and the score was 31-12 before he experienced his only interception of the day, but there was more. In difficult circumstances, he successfully improvised with quick thinking and execution.
Anything less than a strong effect at quarterback, and it could have been Upset City here again.
Tulane was ready. Tulane had a good plan. But Florida State would not cooperate, somewhat to the disappointment of the majority of 27,478 fans who were not given that much inspiration to make the Superdome a maddening den of sound.
"We feel fortunate," said Coach Bobby Bowden. "We had some apprehension about fumbling this game away because of the injuries we had, the way rain had hampered practice, and our lack of timing.
"I was very pleased with the play of Danny McManus and our football team."
With a date at Nebraska on Saturday, the Seminoles may have found this an expensive victory. Hassan Jones, the hot senior wide receiver, went out in the first senior wide receiver, went out in the first quarter with a shoulder injury that will sideline him two or three weeks, possibly longer. Cornerback Eric Williams sprained a foot and is questionable for Nebraska. Tailback Sammie Smith received bruised ribs, and received Randy White a pulled groin muscle.
On the artificial turf of the Superdome, FSU displayed an offense that racked 416 yards and a defense that racked 416 yards and a defense that restricted Tulane to 218.
Tulane netted 50 running. Odds are it would have netted nothing - but for FSU's early aggressiveness in putting a rush on passer Ken Karcher. Smartly, Tulane took advantages of that with trap plays. Also smartly, FSU quickly adjusted. About all Tulane got the rest of the game was short passes and good statistics that were deceptive - 21 completions on 30 throws for 168 yards.
"They were mostly inconsequential," said Bowden. "Our defense was determined not to give up any cheap ones - and that was a tremendous plus over the last time we were in this place."
The last time here Tulane sprung a memorable 34-28 upset.
Darrin Holloman, the sophomore receiver, founf the place much to his liking, pulling in six passes for 84 yards. Cletis Jones, the senior fullback, ran for 81 yards on just 13 bursts. There was also good running from sophomores Chuck Wells (7-38), David Palmer (5-33), and Victor Floyd (4-19). Sammie Smith, the heralded freshman tailback, gained 25 yards on 9 carries while having some problem hanging onto the ball.
"The way our offensive line was handling them up front in the last half," said Bowden, "we could have run on and on."
"I thought had we not fumbled away some early chances, we might have gotten control sooner."
At the start, Florida State did take control.
A shanked punt in the early moments gave FSU the ball at the foe 41. Promptly, McManus shot a 26-yard pass to Hassan Jones. Next play, he threw 15 yards in the end zone to a wide-open Phillip Bryant for the touchdown.
Tulane countered with a 76-yard scoring drive, running the traps, throwing a few short passes. Rodney Hunter scored from the seven on a swing pass as a defensive back missed the tackle, and tied it 7-7.
The Green Wave pretty well controlled the ball in the opening quarter, hogging it for 12:26 of the 15 minutes, but FSU probed from its 14 to the Wave 11 in the second period, before Wells got stripped of the ball by rugged linebacker Burnell Dent - the game's leading tackler with a pressbox credit of 17 stops - and Tulane claimed the fumble.
Soon, FSU drove again, this time to the 7 - where Cletis Jones fumbled, Tulane recovering.
"That sort of thing," said Bowden of the two lost opportunities, "would have killed us against Nebraska."
Pretty soon, McManus uncorked a 22-yard pass to Holloman for a 14-7 lead.
The defense, significantly, had not permitted Tulane to work out of the holes after those fumbles.
In the fading minutes of the half, a misplayed punt rolled to the FSU 13. Smith fumbled a pitchout. As Tulane players tried to fall on the rolling ball in the end zone for a touchdown, McManus alertly got to it, pushed it out of the end zone for a safety that narrowed the score to 14-9.
In the final 10 seconds, Tulane got a 52-yard field goal from freshman kicker Wayne Clements, making it a scary 14-12.
But Florida State took charge immediately in the last half, driving 72 yards to a touchdown, as Jamie Dukes & Co. started moving out defenders. Holloman got 19 on a reverse, caught short passes for 14 and 12. Jones scored from the 14 with an off-tackle slant.
On fourth-and-three at the FSU 46, Tulane tried a fake punt - but Florida State read it all the way, and Martin Mayhew stopped runner Curt Baham well short.
Had Tulane made good on the gamble, it could have made things sticky again.
From that point, Florida State soon moved to make it 24-12 on Derek Schmidt's 49-yard field goal.
In the final quarter, McManus capped an 81-yard drive with a fourth-down rollout from the 1 for a touchdown that boosted it to 31-12.
An interception by linebacker Felton Hayes gave the Seminoles an opportunity from the Tulane 26. McManus again scored from the 1.
Hayes was one of a number of defenders who played well. Along with Darryl Gray and Stanley Scott, Hayes registered a sack.
Florida State ran 70 plays, Tulane 59 as the Seminoles controlled the ball. One of the more surprising figures was only 10 yards in Tulane penalties. FSU drew 52.
The Seminoles punted only twice, as big an indication as anything of their dominance as the won their ninth straight opening game in Bowden's time.

Husker shuckers!
Defense is key to FSU's 17-13 upset.
LINCOLN, NE - On the hottest day for football this state ever knew, Florida State got the defense, kicking game - and whatever else was required for lightning to strike twice.
With it all, the Seminoles chilled mighty Nebraska 17-13 here Saturday, and probably vaulted into the nation's top 10.
A crowd of 75,943, the 137th consecutive sellout in Cornhuskers history, saw a game much like the one in 1980 when Florida State uncorked one of the great upsets, 18-14, on this same field.
But few games anywhere ever have been played in such brutal heat. It was 93 degrees before the kickoff, 96 at halftime, and the heat on the field's artificial turf was measured at more than 130 degrees.
The final score was on the board at halftime, but no one would have believed it at the time. In the heat, the offenses of both teams seemed to suffer most.
Just as in 1980, the Seminoles turned over the ball not once. Nebraska lost it three times. Just like 1980, Florida State capitalized on remarkable punting as Louis Berry, averaging 39.7, punted the ball dead at Nebraska's 7, 4 and 12.
And just like 1980, this game had its unlikely heroes. Among them was Kirk Coker, who came in at quarterback and did what was demanded when starter Danny McManus went out with an injury in the first moments of the last quarter with the Seminoles backed inside their 10. McManus was apparently just shaken up and is expected to be OK.
And now Florida State stands 2-0 with an open date ahead before facing Memphis State at home on Sept. 21.
At the start, it seemed Nebraska would blow the Seminoles away as fullback Tom Rathman tore away on the game's fourth play for 60 yards and a 7-0 Huskers lead.
But right away, the Seminoles started making Nebraska's defense - the nation's best last year - look a little silly.
Mixing passes with runs, McManus directed a 79-yard movement that tied it 7-7 on Darrin Holloman's 15-yard catch over the middle.
FSU led 10-7 in the early moments of the second quarter, settling for Derek Schmidt's 20-yard field goal after driving 67 yards to the 3.
On its next possession, Nebraska went 64 yards and took a 13-10 lead when Doug DuBose went wide with a fourth-down pitchout after the defense had held three times within the 3. But the snap on the point kick was mishandled by the holder, providing no chance for an extra point.
The winning points came with 3:27 in the half.
A bad snap forced punter Dan Wingard to try a run, and Florida State got the ball at the Nebraska 7.
Another break - in the form of a penalty against the Huskers for having 12 men on the field as Cletis Jones dug to the 4 - helped the Seminoles to the 2. Jones scored the touchdown from there.
Florida State racked up 290 yards, most of it in the first half, including 176 passing as McManus connected on 15 of 27 for 172.
DuBose gained 129 yards on 21 carries, and Rathman got 113 on 12 as Nebraska totaled 412 yards, including 372 rushing. The Huskers are not much with the forward pass, and seldom have been.
Sammie Smith, the freshman, got in some damaging late runs, totaling 73 yards on 12 carries. Tony Smith also ran and caught effectively. Holloman again led the receiving with eight catches for 63 yards.
Tackle Stanley Scott, seemingly big in the defensive picture when he claimed a fumble at the Husker 39. On the first play of the final quarter, Nebraska was knocking at the FSU 31 when Rathman fumbled after a good gain and safety Stan Shiver, another conspicuous defender, claimed it at the 8>,P. A bit later Nebraska's Dale Klein missed a 31-yard try for a field goal that would have narrowed it 17-16.
But the biggest play of the game was perhaps Paul McGowan's interception after Nebraska had moved quickly from its 20 to midfield.
After that, the Huskers had just one more chance. And the defense called a halt at midfield, handing the ball back to the offense with 1:03 to play. On Nebraska's last play, the ball bounced harmlessly off the head of center Bill Lewis, and fell to the ground.
Coker continued to do his protective thing, three times falling on the ball for losses.
Bowden said he thought he might give the game ball to the defense.
"No, I think I'll keep it myself," he said, laughing.
"We gave three cheers after the game," Bowden added. "One for the defense. One for Derek Schmidt, and one for Berry's punts."
FSU's hottest previous game was in 1980 when it was 90 for the Sept. 20 kickoff with Iowa. Lincoln had not had a day of 100-degree heat since last Saturday and since then it had had nothing else.
Winning the coin toss, Florida State reserved its option until the second half and kicked off to Nebraska, which drove 82 yards for a 7-0 lead.
On Rathman's 60-yard run, he popped up the middle, cut back, got an inadvertent screen block from an official and dashed for a touchdown.
On FSU's first possession, a short run by Holloman, on a reverse, and Tony Smith's 5-yard pickup with a shovel pass got FSU from its 21 to 32. On a pass, Holloman got 15, and Smith ran for 10 more, to the Nebraska 47. Three more Smith runs led to a first down at the 26.
On third down at the 28, Chuck Wells took a swing pass to the 15. Two plays later, McManus passed over the middle to Holloman for an easy touchdown, and Schmidt tied it 7-7 with his point kick.
Late in the first quarter, the Seminoles began driving toward a field goal and a 10-7 lead.
On first down at the FSU 30, McManus overthrew a wide-open Holloman on a bomb that surely would have brought six points had the pass been a little shorter. After a penalty, Smith caught a 20-yard pass to the 43. Holloman grabbed an 11-yard pass and Wells ran for 5 to the 40 as the quarter ended.
Pat Carter snared a first-down pass at the 34. Next play, Gaylon White pulled in a 29-yarder at the 5.
Smith lost a yard on a pitchout, a Smith run up the middle got 3, and a pass to Holloman was well defended. On fourth down, Schmidt's 20-yard field goal put Florida State up by three.
But the Cornhuskers came back with a 69-yard touchdown drive. Again, the Cornhuskers got good position on a kickoff return as Von Sheppard, on a reverse, ran for 31 to the 31. On fourth down and about a yard, Nebraska gambled with a DuBose sweep that picked up 9 to the 50.
Soon McCathorn Clayton, the alternate quarterback from Orlando, spun clear on a keeper, and Deion Sanders ran him down at the 3 following a 43-yard gain.
It came to fourth down, inches to go. A good fake to the fullback, and a pitchout to DuBose got an easy touchdown as he swept wide untouched. But the point kick was bobbled by the holder, and it stayed 13-10.
The Seminoles then moved to the Cornhusker 43, and Berry punted out of bounds at the 7.
Four plays later, a bad snap on a punt attempt forced Wingard to run, and he was downed at the seven, setting up Jones' 2-yard touchdown run.
On a keeper, Nebraska's Clayton got loose again, for 18 to his 41. But on the next play, Dana Brinson of Valdosta fumbled on a reverse, Scott recovering for FSU at the 39.
A sack of McManus killed the threat.
On the last play of the half, DuBose popped from the Nebraska 25 to the 50 before FSU tacklers and the clock caught him.
At halftime, Nebraska had 224 yards, with 214 of it running as DuBose got 82 on 13 carries. Of the Seminoles' 195 yards, McManus had passed for 137 on 10 completions of 17 attempts.
Three runs from the 20 got FSU just seven after the second-half kickoff, and again Nebraska had good position - at its 40 - following a punt.
DuBose promptly got 12. But that was it. When Wingard punted, he got off a poor one - 8 yards to FSU's 37.
Tony Smith got 10 out of a pass. McManus was getting more intense pressure, however, and soon Berry punted. He angled a 42-yarder out on the 4.
Hurt by an illegal procedure penalty and swarming defense, Nebraska got no farther than its 9. Wingard punted up to his 47.
Hobbled a bit by an offside penalty, FSU again could not move. Berry's punt this time was dead at the 12.
DuBose, on a pitchout, sped for 7, but an offensive pass-interference call set Nebraska back to the 10. Wingard's rolling 54-yard punt backed FSU to its 30.
Holloman caught a first-down pass at the 42. Sammie Smith broke for 13.
It came to fourth and one at the 36. Jones hit the middle and was short. Nebraska took over with 2:08 left in the quarter.
On third and 10, Clayton got 11 on a rollout keeper. On the last play of the quarter, Sheppard took a pitchout and sailed 31 yards down the sidelines before stepping out of bounds at the 14 on the final play of the quarter.

FSU rides defense to victory.
Memphis State beaten 19-10.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Rey Dempsey went to the heart of the matter.
"They came on very strong," said the Memphis State coach. "They made it very tough for us."
Behind 10-0 early, same as last year, Florida State's surprising defensive forces checkmated every Memphis State move the rest of the way here Saturday afternoon.
And that was the name of that tune as the Seminoles won 19-10, with Derek Schmidt booming four field goals - including three king-sized ones - and Kirk Coker slipping a 13-yard pass to Darrin Holloman for a touchdown.
Under a gray, humid September sky, a Campbell Stadium crowd of 54,887 feared pestilence and famine were riding again - about to unseat unbeaten Florida State from its No. 6 national rank.
But here the Seminoles stand 3-0 for the fifth time in nine-plus seasons under Bobby Bowden, who also registered his 40th triumph in 51 home games.
"Winning is the bottom line," said Bowden, not totally thrilled with the close encounter, but philosophical. "I've played a lot of great games, and lost,"
In several respects, however, this game had unusual examples of excellence, if not greatness.
Look at two 51-yard field goals by Schmidt, plus a 46-yarder, and there in the final minutes a 24-yarder that nailed it down.
Look at punter Louis Berry, and his average of 45 on six boots. In the early going, as the offense sputtered, nothing was bigger.
Look at Memphis State going 84 yards in 12 plays to a touchdown the first time it touched the football, as quarterback Denny Sparkman went 5 for 5 with his passes for 69 yards. And then look at these Tigers struggling for 124 yards on 46 plays the remainder of the game - and Sparkman going 8 for 21 on his remaining passes, for 69 more yards.
But, mostly, look at Memphis State getting only one first down in the last half, until the meaningless closing seconds when it got another.
Of their total 208 yards, the visitors gained 156 in that first half. Linebackers Paul McGowan and Fred Jones seemed most conspicuous in the putdown.
"Gosh, our defense did a great job of adjusting after they got out in front," said Bowden.
FSU's offensive effort, under difficult circumstances, may have been generally underrated. Going against a team that last year was fourth nationally in pass defense, 10th in overall defense, the Seminoles were confronted with a rugged band led by outside linebacker Tim Harris - No. 97. "Our kids were ready to play," said Demsey.
Once again, it was senior Coker to the rescue at quarterback as sophomore starter Danny McManus was knocked out of the game on a clean, hard hit late in the first half. Under heavy pressure, but also seemingly off his normal game, McManus completed just five of 15 first-half passes for 68 yards. Coker, going all the way after McManus was hurt, hit seven of eight for 54.
Hassan Jones, not expected to play, caught two key third-down passes.
Coker was big on vital third-down plays, converting four of his first six in the last half and finishing with six of 11 after intermission, as the team went 9 for 20 overall in the category.
Another key offensive factor was ball control, 76 plays to 58 for Memphis.
Of FSU's 308 yards, 188 came running, with tailback Tony Smith scampering for 96 on 18 carries. Both of the top two tailbacks, Tony and Sammie Smith, were out of late action with bruised ribs.
It was 10-6 at halftime. FSU went ahead for the first time at 13-10 on the touchdown that came late in the third quarter.
As though it were a prom, Memphis pranced from its 15 into the Florida State end zone on its first possession as the 6-foot-2 Sparkman hit passes of 12, 12, 22, 12 and 8 yards - the latter to cousin Ricky Sparkman for the touchdown.
Near the end of the quarter, Memphis drove from its 26 to a first down at FSU's 42. After Martin Mayhew made a key third-down tackle for a loss, Don Glossom kicked a 52-yard field goal. Following that second play of the second quarter, Memphis led 10-0.
Along about there, the Florida State defense decided to "retire" the Memphis offense for the remainder of the day.
FSU drove to a first down at the Memphis 30 but Sammie Smith - playing with sore ribs all season - fumbled it away.
From its 46, FSU got a first down on a Hassan Jones catch at the Memphis 25, but offensive interference soon cost 15. Fourth down at the 35, and Schmidt's 51-yard field goal made it 10-3.
Jerry Harris fumbled the kickoff, stripped by Bruce Heggie, and Martin Mayhew got the ball for FSU at the 29. On fourth down, Schmidt kicked a 46-yard field goal - but FSU was penalized 5 for procedure. Whereupon, Schmidt calmly put through his second 51-yarder with 34 seconds left in the half.
On FSU's second possession of the last half, Coker directed from the 15, heavily using Tony Smith on runs. On thid-and-13 at the Memphis 43, Coker hit Hassan Jones with a 23-yarder on the 20. Three plays later, Holloman grabbed Coker's 13-yard toss for the touchdown.
An interception by Monticello's Alphonso Williams provided FSU with an opportunity at the Memphis 37. Schmidt's 46-yard field goal brought it to 16-10 ad the third quarter ran out.
Soon a 28-yard punt return by Deion Sanders to the Memphis 36 provided another field-goal shot. This time Schmidt missed from 47-yard range.
Memphis remained backed up. FSU started from the Memphis 35 following a late punt. Gingerly, the Seminoles drove, Victor Floyd carrying five times.
Finally, Schmidt booted the chip-shot field goal that made it 19-10 as the clock showed 50 seconds to go.
Bowden noted a number of offensive mistakes, including 65 penalty yards and poor pass protection. "Men, I don't use this as an alibi," Bowden told writers later, "but we're playing eight sophomores on offense. And they're showing it."
There is an asterisk for the bottom line.
Once upon a time Memphis State whipped the Seminoles six straight games. But this was the fifth triumph over these tough Tigers in Bowden's time, and now the series is even for the first time, at 7-7-1.

Chip shot.
Late rally behind freshman quarterback leads unbeaten Seminoles past Kansas.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Down by 10 going into the final quarter, Florida State rallied behind freshman Chip Ferguson for two lightning touchdowns and slipped past Kansas 24-20 here Saturday night.
A third-down scoring pass of 68 yards to fellow freshman Phillip Bryant provided the big lift.
That made it 20-17.
One Martin Mayhew interception, and four plays later, the Seminoles got the winning touchdown, on Victor Floyd's 6-yard scamper.
A bit over 10 minutes remained but Kansa never seriously threatened after that.
There at the end it was Eric Williams doing a happy flip after his interception choked off the Jayhawks' last shot. The clock showed 1:14 to go.
Much of the way Florida State was on the ropes as Mike Norseth, a brilliant passer, completed shot after shot.
Norseth completed his first 12. Then the Seminoles pretty well shut him down. He finished with 29 completions of 44 attempts for 308 yards and two touchdowns. But the Seminoles sacked him three times, and - bigger - pulled off four interceptions. Norseth had thrown 175 passes without a theft.
Ferguson had come in with time running out at the start of the fourth quarter.
Interestingly, he threw only three times, but completed two for 78 yards. The threat of his pass on his second possession opened up the running game, and Florida State made the most of it. Kirk Coker hit on 14 of his 28 passes for 191 yards and a single touchdown.
But the Seminoles, behind 10-0 early, were hamstrung by their own mistakes, a surprisingly poor kicking game, and inability to move the ball in clutch circumstances.
Whatever, a crowd of 57,145 whooped it up as the high-ranked Seminoles moved their record to 4-0 and left Kansas 3-1.
At the start, Kansas moved downfield with rapid efficiency.
From the 20, Norseth opened with a pair of short pass completions, then scrambled for 10 yards to his 41.
Four more plays and the Jayhawks had a touchdown. Passes of 16 yards, to Willie Vaughn, and 25, to Sandy McGee, were sandwiched around a draw play for 11. That put the ball at the 7.
On first down, Norseth passed neatly to Sylvester Byrd for the TD.
For the third straight game, the Seminoles found themselves trailing a foe 7-0.
From a double-tight-end alignment, Tony Smith swept for 13 yards to the 36 as FSU opened a drive. Hassan Jones pulled in a Kirk Coker pass for 16, then 23 as the Seminoles quickly slashed to t first down at the Kansas 15. And two Tony Smith runs made it first down at the 4.
Whereupon, fullback Cletis Jones fumbled just before crossing the goal line, and Travis Hardy recovered for a Kansas touchback - bringing the ball out to the 20.
On the draw, Mark Henderson sped to midfield - fumbled, recovered. A couple plays later Norseth threw deep to Johnny Holloway, who fumbled when hit by Martin Mayhew at the FSU 10. Deion Sanders recovered for FSU.
On third down, however, John Randolph intercepted Coker's pass and put Kansas back in business at the 9.
Two runs up the middle lost yardage, as linebacker Paul McGowan spurred a stand. A pass got just 3.
On fourth down, Jeff Johnson kicked a 26-yard field goal for 10-0.
With Tony Smith sweeping for 23 on a pitchout and taking a shovel pass for 16 more, Florida State soon was knocking at the Kansas 35. A bit later, Tony Smith took another pitchout and sailed 23 yards to the 3. But Cletis Jones got nothing and Victor Floyd only a yard as the quarter ended.
On a keeper, Coker struggled into the end zone for an apparent TD - but flags were all over the field. Offsetting penalties - illegal procedure on FSU, holding on Kansas - nullified the play. Tony smith burst up the middle, but was pulled down at the 1.
Derek Schmidt kicked an 18-yard field goal for 10-3.
Mixing his plays now, running a quarterback draw for a key first down and getting 12 with a shovel pass on the following play, Norseth directed a movement that soon had the Jayhawks at FSU's 41.
Norseth had hit 12 straight passes before a throw went through the hands of McGee with 10:37 left in the half.
With that, Florida State held at its 39, bringing a punt that died at the Seminole 7.
Tony Smith popped up the middle for 11, and Hassan Jones caught a pass at the 30. Two plays later Victor Floyd got 18 to the 45. Hassan Jones grabbed a pass at the Kansas 42. Phillip Bryant caught a 17-yarder at the 21.
Next play Coker passed off the middle 21 yards to Bryant for the touchdown that tied it 10-10. The clock showed 7:57 left in the half.
From his 10 on third down, after a Gerald Nichols sack for minus-10, Norseth hit Richard Estell with a 23-yarder.
A swarming defense called a halt at the 42. A punt was shanked out near the 50, but Kansas got another chance on an offsides call against Florida State.
This time linebacker Brian Davis rolled into the punter, trying to block the ball - bringing a 15-yard penalty and a Kansas first down at FSU's 38.
Third down, and a swing pass to Lyn Williams got 12 to the 24.
Two plays later Willie Vaughn caught a 22-yard pass over the middle for an easy touchdown. The visitors jumped back up 17-10 with 1:53 left in the half.
Hassan Jones' 22-yard reception lifted FSU to its 48.
With 25 seconds left and it fourth-and-two at the Kansas 44, Hassan Jones got the pass at the 36.
After two passes failed, Schmidt tried a 52-yard field goal with eight seconds left. It was short and wide.
At this point, Coker had hit 11 of 19 passes for 164 yards, Norseth 17 of 22 for 193. Florida State led in yardage, 300 to 251, with 136 running as Tony Smith got 98 on just 13 runs.
Opening the last half, FSU got a single first down on Smith's running before Louis Berry punted for the first time, from his 44 to the Kansas 20.
Moments later, Norseth's string of passes without an interception came to an end as Greg Newell swiped a bomb at the 26.
But FSU misfortune continued. A clipping penalty set the Seminoles back to the 13 on the interception.
Next play Derek Berry intercepted a Coker pass at the 29.
Third-and-goal at the 3, and Mayhew deflected a ball off a receiver's chest, into the happy hands of teammate Fred Jones in the end zone.
With that interception, Coker tried to generate something from the 20. Hassan Jones snared a third-down throw for 13 yards at the 36. Struggling on to the 47, FSU vaulted to the Kansas 34 with the help of a late-hit penalty as Tony Smith was tackled.
But a first-down blitz cost Coker 6. Passes missed. Berry's punt was short, out of bounds at the 22.
Norseth's 20-yarder to Estell, and a Williams scamper of 16 on the draw moved the Jayhawks to FSU's 42. Third down at the 38, and Williams brightly skipped to the 20 with a pitchout as Stan Shiver missed a tackle that wound have checked him early.
Williams pulled in a pass at the 7. Florida State's defense stood stoutly for three downs. With the ball at the two, Johnson booted an 18-yard field goal. It was 20-10 in the final minute of the quarter.
Unable to move beyond its 30, FSU punted again, to the Kansas 38. Norseth was sacked for a loss of 6 by Garth Jax. After two passes fell harmlessly, a punt left FSU at its 18.
Chip Ferguson, the freshman, moved in at quarterback, throwing a first-play pass to Pat Carter at the 29.
Third down, a timeout, and Ferguson connected with Bryant on a 68-yarder for a touchdown, and the Seminoles were within 20-17 with 12:44 to go in the game.
Promptly, from his 20, Norseth uncorked a 42-yarder that McGee pulled in over double coverage at FSU's 38.
This time on third down, Mayhew picked off a Norseth pass and returned it 21 to the FSU 38.
Up the middle popped Cletis Jones for 18. Wide, on a delay, went Floyd for 32 yards to the 11.
Cletis Jones slammed to the 6. Wide, again, on a pitchout came Floyd, scoring easily from the 6. FSU led 24-20 with a bit over 10 minutes remaining.
A 9-yard pass to Holloway got Kansas to its 33. A keeper by Norseth led on to the 46.
Then linebacker Terry Warren caught the quarterback for a loss of 4. On third down, Jax nailed Norseth for minus-10.
A punt, and clipping on the return put Florida State at its 19 with more than six minutes left.
Tony Smith sped for 14. Cletis Jones whammed for 6, then 9 for a first down at the 48.
There the Jayhawks held. With just under three minutes left, Berry punted poorly, out of bounds at the 28.
After three incompletions, Norseth ran on fourth down for 13 to the 41.
Then, with the clock showing 1:14, Norseth threw under tremendous pressure by Terry Warren - and Eric Williams plucked the interception for the Seminoles and got back to the FSU 43.
And Florida State ran out the clock.

Oops!
Auburn’s furious finish crushes FSU 59-27.
AUBURN, AL – With 6:21 to go, the scoreboard read 31-27.
For Florida State, being that close that late proved some sort of cruel illusion. In those last minutes, Auburn was not only a Tiger that could not be held but also one that ripped away vigorously if even approached.
Scoring four easy touchdowns in a bit over five minutes, Auburn prevailed by a final 59-27 here Saturday afternoon before a mostly exhilarated crowd of 75,000.
As both teams emerged 4-1, Auburn looked very much like a team with a shot at final No. 1 acclaim. And Florida State, the score notwithstanding, looked much like one with a chance for something big – if maybe not as much as it had hoped.
Biggest of all, Bo Jackson looked every bit the part of the college game’s best running back.
He tore through Florida State’s defense with scoring runs of 53 and 35 yards on a day that Auburn got 468, including 412 on the ground.
“It was a pretty good ball game,” said Bobby Bowden, quite accurately, “until the dam broke.”
The dam-breaker was fullback Tommy Agee, tearing away for 68 yards to FSU’s 12 as Florida State braced for Jackson on the first play after closing to within four points on Derek Schmidt’s 46-yard field goal.
“Yeah, that was it,” confirmed Bowden on the Agee run. “That was the dam-breaker.”
Freddy Weygand scored quickly on a 13-yard reverse.
Then – bam – Kevin Porter dashed into the end zone on a 33-yard runback of an interception, making it 45-27 with 4:26 left. After which – double bam – came Ron Stallworth with a 22-yard touchdown run with an interception. And – final bam – an 8-yard TD run by Demetrius Threatt following a fumbled snap by freshman quarterback Chip Ferguson that Auburn recovered at FSU’s 27.
The quarterback position was a continuing problem for FSU, though there were big, bright moments.
Starter Danny McManus had to leave the game in the first quarter with the score 7-7 because of dizziness.
FSU had pushed to a first down at the Auburn 8. But the chance ran out when McManus fumbled a third-down snap, losing 4 yards, and Derek Schmidt missed a 29-yard field goal.
“Up until then, we had about five busted plays – or signals that he had not got right,” said Bowden. “With the fumble, that was it.
“I asked him how he was. He wanted to stay in. He finally said he was a little dizzy.
“You can’t be a little dizzy, and beat Auburn. You gotta be no dizzy.”
But the coach praised the work of McManus, whose problem he felt came from the hits he took in earlier games, and successor Eric Thomas, who wrought much drama though he finished with six completions of his 16 passes, and had three interceptions. He got 165 mostly sensational yards out of the ones he hit.
The first interception that Auburn took in for a score made it 45-27.
“For us,” said Bowden, “that was when the fat lady sang.”
Ball control was one of numerous Auburn assets. The Tigers had it for 33:48 of playing time, over seven minutes more than Florida State which got 405 yards, with 266 passing.
Auburn averaged a big 6.67 yards per play, FSU a vigorous 6.14. But Auburn, last in the SEC in turnover ratio going in, got five FSU turnovers – including four interceptions. FSU got a lone interception from the Tigers. Eight penalties for 60 yards vs. Auburn’s five for 40, did not help FSU’s cause.
But, indeed, Jackson was the most formidable factor of all as he churned toward a Heisman Trophy.
“I cannot believe how good he is,” said Bowden. “When he wants to do it, he can do it.
Pat Dye called it one of the biggest wins of his coaching time at Auburn. “I had no idea it would turn out like this,” he said. “This game was (a better) indication of what kind of football team we are than anything this year.
“There were some tired souls in our locker room, but some happy ones.”
Auburn had struck quickly on its first possession as Jackson broke tackles and raced away on his 53-yarder.
McManus brought FSU right back, with Tony Smith getting big yardage on a screen and a draw. Darrin Holloman got the touchdown on a 4-yard reverse, tying it 7-7.
FSU’s defense checked Auburn, giving the offense big position at the FSU 48 following a punt. McManus hit a couple of passes in the drive to a first down at the 8. But there it ended as Schmidt missed the field goal.
Moments later, however, Eric Williams put FSU up 14-7 as he took a Pat Washington pass, batted it in the air before getting a handle on it, and scored on a 17-yard run with the interception.
Auburn drove 80 yards in 15 plays – all on the ground – to tie it 14-14 on Reggie Ware’s 4-yard run about halfway through the second quarter.
In came Thomas, cutting loose a bomb that Phillip Bryant hauled in 50 yards downfield at the Auburn 30. Four plays later, Schmidt booted a 42-yard field goal to make it 17-14.
With Weygand getting 55 on a reverse, Auburn got to FSU’s 5, but settled for a tying 23-yard field goal by Chris Knapp.
Thomas soon hit Hassan Jones with a 25-yard throw inside Auburn territory. But Schmidt missed a 40-yard try for a field goal just before time ran out in the half.
A 36-yard kickoff return by Keith Ross gave FSU good third-quarter position at the start. But soon a pass sailed through the hands of Hassan Jones, and Porter intercepted at the Tiger 38.
With that one, the Tigers caught the smell of blood in the air.
Washington completed three passes in a drive and Brent Fullwood scored from the 1.
Soon it was 31-17 as Jackson got off his wide scoring run of 35 yards.
Then came FSU’s most stunning play.
Flor Florida State, it came to fourth and two at the Seminole 40. With brilliant fakes into the line – and with run-blocking, rather than pass-blocking, by linemen – Thomas slipped back and threw 48 yards to Hassan Jones at the Auburn 12. Holloman dug to the 2 on a reverse, and Tony Smith scored easily from there to put FSU back in the game 31-24.
Early in the last quarter, Auburn drove to FSU’s 11 but Jackson was stopped on a fourth-and-one plunge.
Florida State took over, and rapidly Thomas quarterbacked the Seminoles to a first down at the Auburn 21. Auburn’s defense rose up. On fourth down, Schmidt kicked the 46-yard field goal that cut it to 31-27.
And 10,000 Florida State fans in the crowd whooped it up for more.
But for Florida State, there was no more. Only Auburn.
“Auburn is a lot better football team than I thought,” said Bowden.
The 59 were the most points ever scored on an FSU team, topping the 58 Southern Mississippi got in 1981.
“Florida State had a good plan for us,” said Dye. “It was not easy to get yardage. I was impressed. Florida State is going to win a lot of football games this year.”
But a big one Florida State and Bowden badly wanted slipped away on the tough, green turf of Joran-Hare Stadium.

Reign of terror.
FSU tramples Tulsa 76-14.
TALLAHASSEE, FL – Turning Tulsa every way but loose, Florida State stomped to a record-breaking 76-14 football victory here Saturday night.
The Seminoles first softened the visitors with the run, then tore ‘em apart with the pass.
Deion Sanders, the freshman, polished it off with a 100-yard runback of an interception – topping the 99-yarder that Fred Biletnikoff got against Miami in 1963 when he played defense as well as offense.
Chances are big that the impressive victory, coupled with Miami’s upset of Oklahoma, locked up a national-TV date on ABC here two weeks hence. Bet on a 3:30 p.m. kickoff time for that FSU-Miami game.
Campbell Stadium never saw anything like this one Saturday. Back in ’49 FSU whipped Whiting Field 74-0 but the NCAA does not count that one. In ’79 Memphis State fell here 66-17, the closest real approximation to this one.
At the start, Florida State kicked off on the soaked field after winning the coin toss. A thunderstorm had struck 40 minutes prior to kickoff, and as a brisk rain continued, the stands remained half-empty.
Running well, Tulsa whipped into Florida State territory in five plays, Gordon Brown leading the charge.
But outside linebacker Darryl Gray applied pressure, forced a fumble that Tulsa recovered for a 5-yard loss. Two plays later, a punt placed the Seminoles at their 23.
Soon, three straight Tony Smith runs lifted FSU from its 29 to 49.
Cletis Jones slammed for 11, Smith for 16. On the next play, Smith broke on a 24-yard scoring run, but a procedure penalty nullified the touchdown.
Tulsa then stopped two runs cold. A pass missed.
Derek Schmidt’s 46-yard field goal put FSU up 3-0.
Bruce Heggie’s tackle on the kickoff return hemmed Tulsa in at its 13, but Rodney Young soon popped on a 13-yard run to the 38.
On successive plays, Stan Shiver and Garth Jax sacked Steve Gage, for losses of 2 and 8 – back to the 18. Then, Deion Sanders wheeled 34 yards with a punt runback to the Tulsa 26.
Promptly, Eric Thomas faked a handoff, then passed to tight end Pat Carter for a touchdown on a 26-yard play.
Schmidt’s extra point was his 57th straight, breaking the school-record 56 by Grant Guthrie.
After a Gage run reached the Tulsa 34, Shiver intercepted the quarterback’s deep pass at FSU’s 35.
On third and five, Smith sailed, behind a Pete Panton block, 44 yards to the 16 with a Thomas pitchout.
Two Victor Floyd carries got a first down at the 2. From there, Floyd scored untouched behind a Jamie Dukes block. The score jumped to 17-0, and the rain had stopped.
A personal-foul penalty on the heels of a Gage keeper vaulted Tulsa to FSU’s 48. On a quick-opener, Young whacked to a 32 as the quarter ended.
Runs by Brown and Gage led to the 14. From there, Young broke free on a touchdown run, and a point-after narrowed the score to 17-7.
From the 16, FSU stuck with its ground game. Four runs gained the 49. On a pitchout, Floyd ripped off 26 to the 25.
A penalty and a missed pass, blunted a touchdown bid, and FSU settled for Schmidt’s 40-yard field goal that made it 20-7.
Defenders halted Tulsa at its 21. Sanders grabbed a 35-yard punt and maneuvered 37 yards to the 19 on the return.
Jones got 13 up the middle, and Smith scored easily from the 6 on a wide run.
Gerald Nichols sacked Gage for minus-5, and then Shiver intercepted a Gage throw to put FSU in business at the Tulsa 20.
After a pass was well defended, Smith took a handoff and raced 20 yards for a touchdown that made it 34-7.
Once again Tulsa was checked without a first down.
FSU began at its 38, and in five plays reached the Tulsa 33. From there, Thomas hit Hassan Jones in the end zone with a pass that jumped the score to 41-7 with 30 seconds left.
A mishandled kickoff placed Tulsa at its 1-foot line – but the clock ran out before greater damage could occur.
At this point, FSU had stacked 321 yards, 248 running as Smith got 147 on 15 carries. Thomas had thrown a mere seven times, hitting three for 73 yards and two touchdowns. Tulsa had 110 yards – none passing. Not only had Gage missed on all five efforts, but two had been intercepted.
Keith Ross, the freshman tailback, dashed 80 yards with the second half kickoff before getting run down at the 20. Next play, Chip Ferguson threw to Hassan Jones in the end zone, and the 20-yard pass made it 48-7.
From the FSU 41, following a poor Tulsa punt, the Seminoles got going on a Floyd run of 12. This drive was capped by Ferguson’s 15-yarder to Phillip Bryant, and it was 55-7.
When sophomore linebacker Paul McGowan scooted 31 yards with an interception for another TD, it was 62-7 with more than seven minutes remaining in the quarter.
FSU got the ball at the 50 when Tulsa apparently lost track of the downs and ran, instead of punting.
A pass to Darrin Holloman got 35.
Fourth down at the 9, and Ferguson shot a pass to Bryant for a touchdown. It was 69-7.
Just before the quarter expired, Young spun away on a 41-yard run to FSU’s 39. A Brown 22-yarder helped key an eventual first down at Florida State’s 1.
After Brown got tossed for a loss of 3 trying to run wide, Deion Sanders plucked a Gage pass and ran a school-record 100 yards for a touchdown that brought it to 75-7.
With a bit over eight minutes left, the Seminoles moved J.P. Connally, a sophomore, in for his first quarterback action.
Three rather uneventful plays later, Louis Berry came in for his first punt.
From its 19, Tulsa moved against FSU reserves, mixing its plays well, and notched a first down at FSU’s 11. On the game’s last play, following a timeout, the Golden Hurricane got a touchdown on Richie Stephenson’s 16-yard pass to Eric Brown.

Tar Trek.
FSU Overcomes sticky Heels and slippery fingers, 20-10.
CHAPEL HILL, NC – For nearly three quarters there, Florida State looked much like a football team about to self-destruct.
Its defense had other ideas.
North Carolina, ahead 10-0 going into the last half, was not thereafter permitted a first down until Florida State tied it 10-10, and scarcely more than eight minutes remained.
Lifting the offense by the seat of the pants and pointing the way, that defense would not budge in the decisive final half as Florida State rallied to take it 20-10.
And that drained the happy-Homecoming color from the faces of most in a sellout crowd of 50,132 on this pleasant, sunny Saturday afternoon, leaving dominant, perhaps, the school color blue.
As Florida State escaped with a 6-1 record – for the fourth time in the 10 seasons of Coach Bobby Bowden – the stage was set for next Saturday’s Campbell Stadium headliner against Miami, also 6-1. ABC will televise it nationally, starting at 3:30 p.m.
Six turnovers – three in the first quarter, five in the first half – put the Seminoles in much trouble.
“You lose four fumbles,” said Bowden unkindly, “you don’t deserve to win.”
Unless the defense won’t let you lose.
A Tracy Sanders interception provided an initial prod. That placed the ball at Carolina’s 20. Four plays later Derek Schmidt kicked a 23-yard field goal. Only 1:30 remained in that third quarter.
An embarrassed offense finally got something on its own, freshman Chip Ferguson collaborating with Hassan Jones on a 49-yard pass to the Carolina 28. Four plays later, Jones collared a 10-yarder from Ferguson for the tying TD with 9:14 left in the game.
Soon the offense ran, ran, ran – nary a pass completion – from its 10 to the Carolina 34, and on fourth down Schmidt walked away from a 51-yard field goal like it was nothing. Had he not made it, the Seminoles perhaps would have got nothing.
It put FSU up 13-10 with 2:22 to go.
Then the Tar Heels managed a couple of first downs, one on a pass-interference call.
Soon, however, Martin Mayhew turned out the lights with an interception of a Kevin Anthony pass. Maneuvering down the sideline on a 62-yard runback, graciously accepting Tracy Sanders’ escort service, the Tallahassee sophomore scored with three seconds left.
FSU worked Anthony for four interceptions, and Mayhew had two. “He has improved as much in one year as any defensive back I’ve been around,” said proud defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews. “He is really playing exceptional.”
On the game’s last play, Anthony completed a meaningless 23-yard pass. Save for that one, Carolina would have finished with fewer than 200 yards of offense. Its total was, finally, 209, just 94 rushing as heralded freshman tailback Derrick Fenner got 78 on 22 carries, 10 more on six pass catches. Earl Winfield, the dangerous receiver, caught just two all day, for 14 yards.
In three successive games, FSU has now scored four touchdowns on interception runbacks – a school record.
“Biggest thing, we were only 10 down at halftime when we were lucky to be in the game,” said Bowden.
“If we had 10 great plays today, eight of ‘em were on defense. Boy, they played great.”
Linebacker Paul McGowan, who had an early interception, and tackle Isaac Williams – who on successive plays tossed Fenner for losses – were among the obvious standouts.
But it took awhile for the defense to get cranked. In the end, FSU had 295 yards of offense, but only 85 came in that miserable first half.
“All Carolina did different,” said Bowden, “was whip us up front early, which was an upset. Our defensive line had a rough time there for awhile.
“Dick (Carolina Coach Crum) did a great job of getting his team ready. Nobody has stopped us on third-and-short all year. They sure did.”
FSU, a 10-point favorite, slammed behind quarterback Eric Thomas, to Carolina’s 45 the first time it got the ball – but a Tony Smith fumble was covered by Carl Carr, and the home team got its first shot from the FSU 44.
The defense forced a punt. A fumbled exchange between center and quarterback brought another fumble. Carolina got this one at FSU’s 18.
Four plays later, Winfield pulled in Anthony’s 6-yard touchdown pass.
A punt backed FSU to its 5. When Thomas threw, Larry Griffin swiped it for Carolina at the Seminole 46.
That opportunity was capped by Kenny Miller’s school-record field goal of 54 yards, and it was 10-0 in the opening quarter.
As Ferguson moved in at quarterback for the remainder of the half, McGowan’s interception brought a chance at Carolina’s 33. Trying to pass on third down, Ferguson unaccountably dropped the ball. Carlton Bailey covered it for Carolina.
The rest of the half was not much, but might have been. On a Carolina fake field goal, there was a wide-open receiver deep but Brad Lopp threw badly.
Spectacular punting by Lois Berry was assisting FSU greatly. Punting five times in that first half, he averaged 49 per, including boots of 56 and 54 yards. He finished with a 46.3 average as FSU punted twice in the final half.
The last half started as the first ended, with an interception of a Thomas throw giving Carolina an early crack from the FSU 20.
The came what many saw as the turning point as: On fourth down, Lee Gliarmis missed a 29-yard field goal that would have made it 13-0.
“I thought our defense kept a lot of turning points away from them,” said Bowden. “Credit our defense with a lot of turning points.”
But without the Gliarmis miss, at this particular time, the others might not have mattered so much.
Ferguson returned and right away, lost 10 yards on two screen passes that Carolina defensed well.
But things began to go better for the offense. Floyd – leading FSU runner for the day with 80 yards in 14 carries – was credited with a 21-yard pickup when after fumbling, the ball rolled forward, and teammate Tim Hebron alertly knocked it out of bounds. That play, too, was a turning point of sorts. Though no points came of the drive, a punt backed Carolina to its 14.
Promptly, Sanders got his interception – and that kicked off a decisive late parade of points.
Ferguson finished with 15 completions of 23 tosses for 124 yards, while Thomas connected on just one of four and suffered two interceptions.
The Seminoles drew seven penalties for 69 yards, Carolina only three for 20.
“This is the third time this year we’ve been down and come back to win,” said Bowden. “There is no bigger test than to come from behind.
“I don’t think we were looking ahead to Miami. What I hope is we can correct some problems.”
One problem in the offensive line may be difficult to immediately correct. Pablo Lopez, starting tackle, was sidelined early with a apparently severe ankle injury (Hebron replaced him). The Seminoles were short, too, because of the absence of guard Mark Salva following the death of his mother. Teammates dedicated the game to Salva.
“Hebron was about all we had to back up guard and tackle,” said offensive coordinator Wayne McDuffie. “We were flat as a pancake. Just didn’t have that intensity.”
To Bowden, many of the assorted turnovers and mistakes were mental.
“But also,” he said, “You got to give North Carolina credit.”

Miami whammy.
Hurricanes storm past FSU 35-27 with hot second half.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Bobby Bowden called it a heck of a football game, and Jimmy Johnson said it was a "great, great football game."
But, for Florida State partisans, the scoreboard there with 58 seconds left may have described it better than either of the coaches.
That scoreboard read "TILT."
Ahead 24-14 at halftime, Florida State got outscored by Miami 21-3 in the stretch Saturday afternoon, including 14-0 in the decisive fourth quarter, and fell 35-27.
Very simply, Miami won because it had Vinny Testaverde and Florida State lost because it did not.
The 6-foot-5 junior quarterback shrugged off seven sacks by FSU defenders to hit 23 of 41 passes for four touchdowns and 339 yards - more than Miami's net offensive total of just 321.
An astonishing fact was he showed halftime figures of only 9-for-19 for 127 yards and two touchdowns.
"Overall, I thought the last half was fantastic," said Miami's Johnson.
"Overall, from the vantage point of 7-1 Miami, the coach is altogether correct.
With scouts from eight bowls among a record Campbell Stadium crowd of 61,250 on a dry, overcast afternoon, Miami won its eighth straight road game - since a loss at Michigan early last year - and vaulted into enviable position for a New Year's Day bowl. A loss that left Florida State 6-2 almost assuredly cost FSU the bigger bucks of a New Year's Day bowl. South Carolina and Western Carolina remain before bowl-picking day, then Florida afterward.
"You have to give Miami a lot of credit," said FSU's Bowden. "They came out there and won the football game."
In that last half, Miami applied more pressure than Florida State was able to withstand. As Testaverde got hot, Florida State's offense, behind freshman first-time starter Chip Ferguson at quarterback, generated far from enough to keep Florida State's rugged defense from being overburdened.
"I thought he played well for a freshman," said Bowden. In the end, Ferguson, going all the way, connected on 14 of 38 passes for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns. But in that blistering, conclusive last half, he was a mere 4-for-13 and 59 yards.
Florida State just could not keep up.
Its first series of the last half was ominous - an illegal-procedure penalty, a holding penalty, a slip by Ferguson for a 4-yard loss.
And then a punt followed by quick Miami movement - 77 yards in eight plays, starting with a 32-yard pass to Brian Blades. Willie Smith, the tight end, made a couple of big catches, and soon there was a first down at the 2. Alonzo Highsmith scored a touchdown from there that cut FSU's lead to 24-21.
FSU struggled to get out from under poor field position - successive starts at its 18, 19 and 25 - but it was three-downs-and-punt, with the FSU defense scrambling to keep Miami at bay. Miami had the good position at its 38, 44, 34 and 36.
Briefly, the offense came alive after getting backed to its 13. Philip Bryant hauled in a 41-yard pass at the Miami 34. Four plays later Derek Schmidt booted a 44-yard field goal for 27-21.
That was it.
J.C. Penny wheeled 48 yards to FSU's 48 with the kickoff. On third down, Michael Irvin grabbed a 22-yard pass at the 30. Next play he tucked in a 30-yarder for a touchdown that put Miami ahead to stay 28-27 with 9:55 to play.
Unable to move from its 23, FSU punted and Miami marched 77 yards to a finishing TD. This, after Testaverde was sacked at the 13. A 32-yard pass to Irvin started it. On third and three, Smith snared a 36-yarder at the FSU 12. It came to fourth down at the 2 - and Testaverde hit Brett Perriman with a wide pass for the touchdown that made is 35-27 with 3:05 remaining.
Florida State had two more offensive shots, but it was all futility - the last opportunity culminating in a Ferguson fumble. To Many, it seemed that Ferguson was down when he lost the ball - that it was not really a fumble - but it seemed scarcely to matter.
Miami was intense enough early, gambling on fourth down, a yard to go, at midfield on its first series. FSU held, but the offense got nothing out of that chance.
Louis Berry, who punted nine times for a 47.8 average, booted his first into the end zone. When, four plays later, Miami lined up to put, a too-low snap resulted in kicker Jeff Feagles falling on the ball at the 8.
On second down, Ferguson threw to Hassan Jones for an 8-yard touchdown, and FSU led 7-0.
In a span of 17 playing seconds, Miami went up 14-7.
A 39-yard Mel Bratton kickoff return provided a start at the Miami 46. Blades, who caught five Miami throws for 129 yards, pulled in a big one at the FSU 28, and soon Testaverde hit Blades with a 10-yard scoring strike.
FSU's next scrimmage play saw Tolbert Bain intercept Ferguson at the FSU 38.
Promptly, Testaverde passed to Blades for a 38-yard touchdown.
When Miami had to punt for the second time, it found trouble again.
Jesse Solomon tore through to block it, Bill Richardson recovering for an apparent touchdown - but the play was killed by a flag signaling delay-of-game against Miami.
Bingo! As Feagles tried again to punt, John Hadley blocked it - and Brian Davis fell on it in the end zone for a touchdown that stood. It was tied 14-14 late in the opening quarter.
An aroused defense started swarming Testaverde. Once, Darryl Gray sacked him for a 21-yard loss.
From its 28, FSU drove behind the running of Victor Floyd. On fourth down at midfield, it was a fake punt that saw Cletis Jones speeding wide for 30 yards to the 22. Floyd led to a first down at the 10, but losses came on the following three plays. Whereupon, Schmidt hit a 37-yard field goal that provided FSU with a 17-14 advantage.
But FSU could not run consistently, finishing with 12 ground yards among its total 300 as Floyd led with 72 in 14 carries.
With 2:39 left in the half, FSU capped an 83-yard drive in six plays with Ferguson's 26-yard TD pass to Pat Carter.
But that 10-point lead proved not enough.
Among other things, Miami controlled the ball, 80 plays to 67, and had no turnovers. Florida State lost the ball three times, twice on interceptions. Additionally, the Seminoles were socked with eight penalties for 70 yards, verses Miami's six for 45.
Asked later about officiating, Bowden said: "Well, I better not comment."
It was Miami's eighth victory in 10 Tallahassee games in a series that has been dominated by the visiting team.
"No way I can fault my players," said Bowden. "Testaverde was unbelievable."

FSU runs over Gamecocks.
Floyd gains 212 in a 56-14 romp.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Run right at them.
That was the essence of a Florida State plan, and it was all the spur that Victor Floyd needed.
Racing for 212 yards on just 15 carries, the Pensacola freshman was a key to the unlocking of a big door as the Seminoles ground South Carolina 56-14 here Saturday night in a wild-and-long game.
The victory, lifting FSU to 7-2, assured a berth in somebody's bowl game. And the Dec. 30 Gator Bowl is a strong possibility, but the Dec. 21 Cherry seems to be pushing hard, too.
"We are very, very interested," said Muddy Waters, executive director of the Pontiac, Mich., bowl that guarantees a payoff in excess of $740,000 and projects a $1.4-million possibility.
But much is speculation until Nov. 23, when teams may officially accept bids.
Saturday's game - including scouts of the Peach, Citrus as well as Cherry and Gator bowls among the 54,121 in Campbell Stadium - was to an astonishing degree no contest.
The 13th of a series was terribly unlucky for South Carolina, as FSU won for the 10th time, as Bobby Bowden won his 80th Florida State game in his 10th season here.
Somebody wanted to know of Bowden if the Seminoles have a trend of crushing an opponent following a loss.
"If that's a trend, I hope we lose next week," cracked the coach, "and you can quote me on that."
FSU plays Western Carolina in a Homecoming game here next week. The next, and last, opponent: Florida there Nov. 30.
Pounding out 409 yards running of its 542 total, Florida State got a big contribution from another freshman tailback - Keith Ross. He had 163 yards in 23 carries.
"There is no two ways about it," said Joe Morrison, the South Carolina coach, "Florida State is a good football team.
"They are more aggressive defensively than I can recall them being last year."
Chip Ferguson, the freshman quarterback, guided FSU to a prohibitive lead early in the second half, and FSU mopped up with Kirk Coker, Eric Thomas, and J.P. Connally. Throwing just 10 times, Ferguson completed eight for 106 yards and three touchdowns.
And the Seminoles, who had nine turnovers in a 38-26 loss at South Carolina last year, suffered just one turnover all evening - a fumble.
Sometimes lashing out in frustration perhaps, the Gamecocks drew 18 penalties for 154 yards - more than any FSU opponent in history. The game also saw more total penalties that any in FSU history as the Seminoles were flagged 13 times for 110 yards.
Bowden said he did not know why the game was so sloppy that way, saying there was no animosity by his Seminoles following last year's defeat. He said he told Morrison his turn to win might come next year.
"I thought our offensive line had a great game," said Bowden. "The defense played well - and kicking was super. If we could have gotten any coaching, we would have been all right.
"We knew we had to run the ball on them, and that was really the difference. We had a game plan.
"Floyd was amazing."
FSU, generally, was amazing in this one, early and late.
On an early series, Ferguson uncorked a 45-yard pass to Hassan Jones that paved a 3-yard payoff toss to Pat Carter. Just a little later, Floyd tore away on a 56-yard run, and Tanner Holloman scored from 10 yards out.
It became 21-0 early in the second quarter - an astonishing 97-yard drive in seven plays capped by Pete Panton's 7-yard touchdown catch of a Ferguson pass. Again, Floyd's running set it up.
Soon Ross broke on a 53-yard scoring run.
With 2:19 left in the half, Floyd took a 14-yard Ferguson pass for a TD that jumped it to 35-0.
Only then did South Carolina move, getting on the board just before halftime with a 9-yard trick pass, halfbak Kevin White to quarterback Mike Hold.
In two third-quarter plays from the 20, Floyd got a touchdown - the first a 19-yard run, the second a 61-yarder.
An Eric Williams interception set up Florida State at the 1, and Ferguson scored from there on a first-down busted play.
In the closing quarter, South Carolina scored again as a scrambling Hold passed 55 yards to Gary Prater.
Ross got a final Florida State touchdown on a 5-yard run with 8:03 remaining.
Hold threw 40 passes trying to make something work and completed 16 for 225 yards and a single touchdown. Three times he was sacked.
Florida State's offense averaged 7.63 yards per try. With the running game turned on, the offense gave the defense rest for a change. FSU had the ball for 32:12, Carolina for 27:48.
The flood of penalties and the first-ever telecast of a Florida State game by ESPN stretched the game to three hours and 20 minutes.
"I have always believed you play like you practice," said Bowden, unhappy last week with rain that hampered workouts before the Miami game.
"This time we practiced good."

The Cats' meowwwww.
FSU celebrates Homecoming with a Catamount rout.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Chopping out a rather matter-of-fact victory over outmanned Western Carolina here Saturday night, Florida State vaulted - very probably - into the Gator Bowl.
A crowd of 52,778 watched as Bobby Bowden won his 10th straight Homecoming game. Ahead 19-0 at halftime, the Seminoles romped on 50-10.
Tommy Gay, representative of the Gator Bowl, said firmly that Florida State is the No. 1 choice for the game, Dec. 30 at 8 p.m.
That should do it. Financially, the Jacksonville bowl, with its $900,000 payoff, is clearly the Seminoles' best option. Officially, bids cannot be extended and accepted until next Saturday.
The start of the game was delayed 10 minutes or so following pre-game ceremonies highlighted by the presentation of a Ford Country Squire station wagon to trainer Don Fauls, who will retire at season's end. Burt Reynolds, here for a reunion of the '54 team, turned the keys over to Fauls.
On a 9-yard keeper by quarterback Kenny Edwards, Western Carolina got a first down at its 32 but three plays later punted to FSU's 31.
Almost exclusively on the running of Victor Floyd, FSU drove, in eight plays, to a first down at the visitors' 19.
But when quarterback Chip Ferguson moved to throw his first pass, he was sacked for an 8-yard loss by big end Clyde Simmons.
On fourth down at the 19, Derek Schmidt kicked a 36-yard field goal for 3-0.
Two third-down passes by Edwards took the Catamounts to the 50. Tyron DeLapp pulled in a 16-yarder, and then Todd Curie grabbed one for 18.
A penalty set the Cats back. After a punt, FSU started anew at its 26.
With Keith Ross swinging wide for 13 and 11 yards, the Seminoles pounded out running plays to the for 31. Cletis Jones ran to the 20 as the quarter ended.
After Ross was stopped for a 1-yard loss, Ferguson threw his second pass to Hasan Jones for 14 at the 7-yard line. Two plays later, following a penalty, Jones pulled in a 10-yard touchdown catch. The score jumped to 10-0 as Schmidt kicked his 80th consecutive extra point.
Mike Pittman then took a kickoff and ran 59 yards down the sideline to FSU's 41.
After a deep pass missed, Edwards was sacked by Paul McGowan for a loss of 7. Then delay cost the Cats 5 more. Two plays later a punt put FSU at the 21.
Three plays got nothing, as a long pass to Phillip Bryant was a little short. Then a run and shovel pass failed.
Louis Berry's first punt placed the Cats at their 36.
A bit later Steve Kornegay's 48-yard punt backed the Seminoles to their 11.
Just after Ross got loose for 8, Ferguson hit Darrin Holloman with a 47-yard pass at the opponent's 35.
Four plays later, Ross headed up the middle with a handoff, cut to his left, and went 22 yards for a TD.
On the extra-point try, a too-high snap resulted in holder Kirk Coker attempting to throw. Pat Carter made a game, diving try for the pass but failed.
At its 20, Western Carolina could not overcome a procedure penalty. A punt from the 14 gave FSU position at the enemy 41.
On second down, Miles Nicholson intercepted Ferguson's pass and ran it up 9 yards to his 35.
DeLapp caught a pass at midfield.
A couple more plays, and a deep Edwards pass was stolen by Eric Williams at the FSU 16.
Cletis Jones ran for 9 yards and fumbled. Ferguson recovered. Ross picked up a first down at the 34, and on the following play ran wide for 26 yards to the Carolina 41. Herb Gainer grabbed a 25-yard Ferguson pass at the 16. But Ferguson got sacked, and two passes were futile.
Schmidt's 38-yard field goal made it 19-0 with 1:22 left in the half.
A 19-yard pass to Vincent Nowell got Western Carolina to its 42, but Edwards ran into a Stanley Scott sack on the next play, and that was it for the first half.
At this point, Florida State led in yardage, 280 to 75, with 177 rushing. Ross showed 99 yards on just 12 carries. Ferguson had hit on just five of 14 passes for 103 yards.
The visitors showed minus-3 yards rushing, plus 78 passing with Edwards completing six of 18.
From their 19, after the kickoff, the Seminoles renewed their running.
Tony Smith led a charge up to the 39. As Ferguson tried to throw, Simmons sacked him but grabbed the quarterback's face mask on the tackle. The penalty vaulted FSU to the foe's 46.
Rambling wide, Smith got 28 to the 18, and soon 8 more yards to the 4. Two plays, and he scored from the 2. A Schmidt boot, and it was 26-0.
Kornegay's 52-yard punt provided FSU with another turn, at its 22. Promptly, Ferguson threw long to Hassan Jones - a 57-yarder to the 21.
Two more throws in Hassan's direction were futile. Chuck Wells, on a Statue of Liberty handoff, was nailed for a loss of 9.
Schmidt's 48-yard bid for a field goal was wide.
Bryce Cantrell's fumbled pitchout was quickly claimed by Martin Mayhew, and FSU had a new shot from the 26.
On third down, Ferguson evaded a rush and threw 22 yards to Hassan Jones at the 3. Ross scored from there, and it became 33-0.
Soon, it was a drive from the FSU 28. On successive plays, Smith got 17 to the Carolina 46, Tom O'Malley caught an Eric Thomas pass at the 33, and Chuck Wells pounded up the middle for 30 to the 3.
Editors Note: Wells scored from the 1 and Schmidt kicked the extra point to make the score 40-0.
On the first play of the final quarter, Bill Richardson's interception placed FSU in business at its 49.
But, as Thomas overthew Pete Panton, the pass was intercepted by Ronnie Perry who sprinted 64 yards to a touchdown that cut the score to 40-7.
A fumbled pitchout to Tony Smith was claimed by Wayne Parker for the visitors at the Carolina 48.
In rapid succession, Jesse Solomon intercepted an Edwards throw, the Floyd's fumble was claimed by Kendall Rycroft, and finally Solomon recovered a Catamount fumble. Kirk Coker replaced Thomas at quarterback for FSU.
On third down, Coker hit Phillip Bryant with a 21-yard pass. Next play, Bryant pulled in a 22-yarder at the 6. The score was 47-7 after Floyd scored on a 5-yard run.
Richardson's second interception gave Florida State possession at the Carolina 28.
It came to fourth-and-two at the 5, and Schmidt kicked a 21-yard field goal for 50-7 with four minutes remaining.
With a minute left, Kirk Roach kicked a 38-yard field goal after the Cats got inside the FSU 10 on a 45-yard pass, Willie Perkins to Pittman.

BELLted.
Gators burn FSU 38-14 on Bell's passes.
GAINESVLLE, FL - Another mighty lick, and another awesome promise.
The University of Florida's football team pounded Florida State for the fifth straight year, as a record crowd of 74,461 at Florida Field rubbed its eyes on a warm Saturday afternoon.
The promise, in the extraordinary throwing arm of sophomore Kerwin Bell, is that there is more to come.
"Remarkable," said Bobby Bowden. "He has everything it takes."
Completing 14 of 22 passes, Bell hit on touchdown tosses of 82, 75 and 14 yards among his 343 yards.
That shot his two-season total for TD passes to 37 - one more that Steve Spurrier threw during his entire Heisman Trophy-winning career at Florida.
It wasn't just Bell. It was all the Gators.
"They dominated us again," said Bowden. "I thought it would be a close game.
"Florida is too - they're good, man. I got a feeling they're plain better."
To most, Florida made its superiority perfectly clear as it stretched its Florida Field record over the last five years to 27-1-2 and notched its second straight 9-1-1 season.
A proud Galen Hall is now 17-1-1 in his time, and that's a record not matched by any SEC coach in history over the span of his first two seasons.
"I don't think enough can be said about what the seniors on this team have accomplished," said Hall. "I hope we can finish in the top five. I think we are deserving."
He gets no argument on that point from any Seminoles here Saturday.
Averaging 6.46 yards a play, the Gators stacked up 478 yards and controlled the ball - and the game - 74 plays to 63.
Moreover, Florida had no turnovers while Florida State continued its recent self-destructive tendencies in this series. FSU had six turnovers, including four interceptions of Chip Ferguson's passes.
The freshman quarterback played every down. "He learned a lot of football today," commented Bowden.
Ferguson hit 18 of 37 passes for 230 yards, but he headed an offense that was about as futile as any time in recent history. Florida's 14th-ranked defense was a big reason why.
"We wanted to do some things," said Florida linebacker Alonzo Johnson, "to make him make mistakes. I think it worked.
"The defense said that we were going to have a squad meeting there at the football - have a roll call. And if you're not there, you got to run after the game. We said after we get the ball, you've got to holler out your name. Nobody wanted to be standing way back there when everybody looked around."
Offensively and defensively, Florida took control early, and FSU trailed 14-0 with barely nine minutes gone in the game. At halftime it was 28-0.
The game-opening series was, at the very least, a tempo-setter as Florida ran on its first seven plays - including a penalty on one. What it did was run effectively enough to bring adjustments in the FSU defense, perhaps about the time Bell opened up with his passes.
A crusher was Bell's 27-yarder to swift Ricky Nattiel at the FSU 31 - the first of his five catches, for 161 yards. Then John L. Williams got 25 yards out of a pass. After which, Neal Anderson ran wide for a 6-yard touchdown.
Running 23 times, tailback Anderson got 95 hard yards, fullback Williams only 20 in his 20 efforts.
Victor Floyd lost a fumble on the Seminoles' first series, presenting Florida with opportunity at the FSU 45. After Anderson rambled for 19 to the 15, Bell got the Gators to the 3 on a pass, and Anderson ran wide again to make it 14-0.
Early in the second quarter, Deion Sanders provided Florida State with a dramatic lift when he ran a punt back 34 yards to the Florida 33.
But the Seminoles got nothing. On fourth down, Derek Schmidt was short on a 47-yard try for a field goal.
Florida drove - and Jeff Dawson was wide on a 44-yard try for three.
Florida intercepted a deflected Ferguson pass at the 10. A punt found Sanders on a 13-yard return to the Gator 39 - but a holding call nullified it, and a second punt set FSU back on its 27.
Maybe a pretty big penalty.
Two plays later Ferguson's deep pass was intercepted by Vernell Brown. And then, on a fake reverse, Bell threw to Nattiel for a TD on a 75-yard play.
There was time for Florida to push the score to 28-0 before time ran out in the half, moving from its 38 following a punt. Nattiel snared a 48-yard throw - and then a 14-yarder. As simple as that.
Florida State cut it to 28-7 as Sanders - on a dazzling return - went 58 yards with a Ray Criswell punt early in the second half.
A bit later, on their only drive of note all day, the Seminoles struck from their 25. A 43-yard pass from Ferguson to Hassan Jones at the Florida 20, was the key. Then Darrin Holloman grabbed a throw at the 4, and Ferguson on a keeper scored easily from there.
Notions that Florida State might make a game of it were promptly stilled. Just two plays later, Bell uncorked one to Frankie Neal at the FSU 40 and the receiver raced on to a touchdown that made it 35-14 - an 82-yard play.
There was more than 18 minutes to play, but it was over.
Schmidt missed a 53-yard field-goal attempt, and Dawson a 41-yarder. With 2:50 to go, Dawson put through a 40-yarder that made it a final 38-14.
Had Florida State had a couple more like Fred Jones on defense, it might have made some difference. The big junior linebacker, according to a pressbox accounting, led players on both teams with 11 tackles, making nine outright.
On the offensive line, the Seminoles lost tackle John Ionata - that line's top performer last season - in the early going when he was kayoed.
Had he used every trick he had to win this game, Bowden was asked?
"No," he replied. "We got so far behind, tricks would not have worked. They were waiting on those. We were not gonna fool 'em at that point.
"You get 14 points down against Florida and it's not healthy."
Closing the regular season with an 8-3 record, the Seminoles await a Dec. 30 Gator Bowl date against Oklahoma State.
"We wish them the best of luck in the Gator Bowl," said Galen Hall.
Alonzo Johnson said it was disappointing not to go to a bowl.
"But I don't think anything could happen better than this," he said.

FSU ropes Cowboys.
Seminoles passing wins Gator Bowl.
JACKSONVILLE, FL - With freshman Chip Ferguson throwing all the way, Florida State ripped out an emphatic 34-23 victory over Oklahoma State here Monday Night in the 41st Gator Bowl.
It was 13-0 at halftime, and 27-3 in the third quarter before the Cowboys struck for two quick touchdowns that cut it to 27-17.
But early in the final quarter, Ferguson directed a 55-yard drive in nine plays, scoring himself from the 1 to ice it. The Cowboys scored with 10 seconds left in the game.
As Bobby Bowden wrapped up his 10th season of coaching Florida State, the Seminoles won nine games under him for the fifth time. A final 9-3 record should assure the Seminoles of final rank among the nation's top 15. Oklahoma State wound up 8-4.
All the way, it was as though Florida State's receiving corps was not depleted.
Bowden had firmly made up his mind he was going with the young Ferguson, and throw the ball like Florida State seldom has.
"And there ain't gonna be none of this waiting to third down to put it up," he had promised.
A shocked Oklahoma State was the victim of a plan that worked throughout.
Oklahoma State at the start chose to lead with its 14th-ranked defense after winning the coin toss - kicking off to Florida State.
From its 22, FSU came out doing what it planned to do. Throw.
On the first play, freshman Chip Ferguson uncorked a 45-yard bomb to sophomore Randy White at the Cowboy 33.
Next play, White caught a pass at the 22.
On the third play, Ferguson underthrew Herb Gainer, and Mel Gilliam intercepted in the end zone.
Whereupon, from the 20, Oklahoma State started doing what it planned to do. Run.
Three whacks left the Cowboys a yard short, however. A punt was returned `` yards by Deion Sanders to the FSU 43.
A pass to Gainer got 13. Twice more Ferguson threw but to no avail. A shovel pass to Tony Smith lost 4. Another overthrow. Then Ferguson, trying to pass for the seventh straight time, was sacked back at his 45.
A 16-yard pass, Ronnie Williams to Hart Lee Dykes, gained Oklahoma State's 38 following a punt.
A short pass, coupled with a roughing penalty on the play, carried the Cowboys to FSU's 40. On third-and-11, Thomas raced outside on the draw - 12 yards to the 28.
Williams kept for five, but Thomas lost two and a pass missed.
Joey O'Donnell missed a field-goal try of 42 yards, but FSU's Terry Robinson was penalized for running into the kicker. Following a 5-yard penalty, O'Donnell missed again, from 37 yards, giving FSU the ball at its own 20.
Gainer promptly collared a 28-yard Ferguson pass to place FSU at its 48. Third down at the 50 saw Pat Carter snare a pass at the Cowboy 39. Then Gainer grabbed one at the 28. On a delay, Smith took a handoff and broke wide for 14 yards to the 14. A roughing-the-passer call on the next play gave FSU a first down at the 7.
A pass failed. Cletis Jones lost a yard. A reverse by Randy White got stopped by Warren Thompson for a yard gain when it might have gone for more.
Derek Schmidt then kicked a 23-yard field goal for 3-0.
On successive passes, Williams hit Curtis Looper for 12, then Dykes for 20 to FSU's 38 as the quarter ended.
Thomas got just a yard on a run. Two passes missed. Whereupon, a Rich Thompson punt put FSU in a hole when downed at the 2.

On second down, Thomas hit the middle, picked his way outside, then turned it on for 24 yards to the 39. A short pass, coupled with a face-mask penalty, gained FSU's 49. But a pass failed, a reverse got nothing, and Williams was sacked by Isaac Williams and Stanley Scott. A punt put the Seminoles on their 11.
Smith's running and a 10-yard pass to Carter got the ball to the 28. Berry punted to the Cowboys' 30.
Two incomplete passes and a 4-yard loss by Thomas when tackled by Gerald Nichols had the Cowboys at their 26 when it came to punting time. A short boot, for 27 yards, gave FSU the ball at its 47.
Nothing came of the chance. Smith was short on a run. Two passes failed. A punt gave the Cowboys another turn, at their 20.

At this halfway point, Florida State had stacked up a rather astonishing 319 yards, with 215 passing as Ferguson hit 12 of his 26 shots. Randy White and Gainer had caught four each.
Of 99 net yards rushing, Smith had 90 on just 10 carries.
Thomas, meanwhile, had been limited to 55 on 13 runs and the Cowboys restricted to 143 yards, 86 of it passing.
From its 21 after the second-half kickoff, Oklahoma State moved for 12 yards on three Thomas runs.
Dykes got a 17-yard pass at midfield, and Thomas netted 10 more on a throw, to the FSU 40.
Nichols racked Thomas for minus-3, but pass interference on Deion Sanders soon gave the Cowboys a first down at the 28. A short pass, and a Thomas run gained the 18.
Thomas got just two to the 16. On third down, Dykes, defended by Martin Mayhew, dropped a touchdown pass in the end zone.
Brad Dennis booted a 33-yard field goal, and it was 13-3.
A screen pass to Smith for 12 quickly had FSU at its 39. A third-down throw to Gainer for 25 reached the Cowboy 37. Pete Paton, at the 23, caught a 12-yarder. After two passes failed, Smith sped up the middle on a draw for 21 to the 2.
A fumble cost a yard loss, and a pass fell to the ground. Again on third down, a surprise play - Cletis Jones moving easily on a run off the right side for a touchdown. Schmidt's point made it 20-3 with 6:02 left in the quarter.

Working the ball to their 39, the Cowboys slammed into FSU territory on a 26-yard pass to Bobby Riley.
Soon after, a screen pass to Thomas saw the tailback break on a 29-yard scoring run that cut it to 27-10.
More trouble soon came.
When, at the 27, Ferguson dropped back for a third-down pass, he fumbled when sacked. Gilliam claimed the ball at the 12.
On the first play, Williams slipped wide after handing off the Thomas, who then threw to the wide-open quarterback for the touchdown. Suddenly, the score was 27-17.
