FSU takes wild opener 38-31.
It went down to the wire.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Behind 14-0 before 49,253 fans scarcely had settled in the seats, struggling Florida State came back again and again and again and…
Well, the Seminoles finally won an incredibly wild opening football game over Cincinnati here Saturday night 38-31.
Except for the early minutes and the heart-stopping last 90 seconds, Blair Williams seemed to perform exceptionally well for FSU in his first start at quarterback. With 1:10 to go, Cincinnati stood at the Seminoles' 19 with a chance to tie or win following a 56-yard runback of an interception by Antonio Gibson of a Williams pass.
Nothing came of it. But only in the last 20 seconds of this game were Florida State rooters able to feel they were home free.
Williams had a bit of a shaky start at quarterback. After Greg Allen returned the opening kickoff 28 yards to the 35, Williams soon lost 6 trying to pass. Another pass effort missed. Kelly Lowrey punted 45 yards, and Cincinnati began at its 28.
A pass to Allen Harvin got 10, but with linebacker Kim Mack leading a charge, FSU's defense held and forced a punt. Alphonso Carreker deflected that kick, and it traveled 24 yards to the FSU 29.
Then came big trouble. Hit by end Errol Cleveland as he tried to pass, Williams fumbled, and Cornelius Clark recovered the rolling ball for Cincinnati at the FSU 9.
On third down Barrett passed 3 yards to his tight end, Darryl Goosby, for the touchdown. He was wide open. Jim Fogler kicked a point for 7-0.
Greg Allen steamed from the goal line to the 43 with the kickoff.
A charging defender hit Williams' arm as he threw - and it was big trouble again. Cleveland intercepted the errant throw and raced 49 yards to a touchdown. Fogler kicked another point, making it 14-0.
Only six minutes were gone in the quarter.
FSU got nothing on its next series - but then, neither did the Bearcats. Lowrey backed up the visitors with a whopper of a punt 56 yards to the 12.
Four plays later, Phil Peckich dropped back to punt from the 20. Under a hard rush led by Warren Hanna, he thought better of even trying - and passed instead. Incomplete. FSU got the ball at the 20.
On first down, Ricky Williams took a pitchout, cut inside and danced 20 yards for a touchdown. Philip Hall kicked a point to cut it to 14-7.
On the kickoff, Lamont Patterson seemed to speed all the way to FSU's 15 on the return, but an illegal block rubbed it out, and Cincinnati was obliged to start at its 12. After gaining 9, Cincinnati lost yardage on three straight plays, two of them because of penalties, and finally punted from its 8. FSU got a crack from the Bearcat 41.
It came to fourth-and-two at the 33, and the Seminoles gambled. Williams passed to Ken Burnett, who dashed for 19 on the screen to the 14. On another screen, Greg Allen ran over a couple of people and picked up 8 to the 1-yard line. He scored on the next play. Hall tied it 14-14 with eight seconds remaining in the long first quarter.
There was still time, however, for Larry Harris to pick off a pass and set the Seminoles up at Cincinnati's 30.
A pass to Ricky Williams gained 14 to the 12. Greg Allen powered to the 9, and a foul placed FSU at the 3. Two plays later Greg scored his second touchdown from the 1, and Hall added a third point for 21-14.
Very shortly, a Harvey Clayton interception had FSU at the Cincinnati 25.
But a motion penalty nullified a running gain, and a pass missed. On fourth down, FSU faked the field with Lowrey, the holder, rising and passing to Zeke Mowatt - a yard short at the 16,
Barrett started finding the range with passes, but nothing came of a couple of completions that gained FSU's 46. On a tremendous play, punter Peckich saw the ball sail about 20 feet over his head. He raced back and recovered it and got off a punt to the Seminoles' 31.
On the next play Burnett fumbled as he picked up 14 yards, and the ever present Cleveland got it for Cincinnati at the 46.
Right away fullback Don Goodman got wide open down the sidelines as somebody missed an assignment, and Barrett hit him for an easy touchdown on a 46-yard play. Now it was a 21-21 tie after Fogler's conversion.
Florida State drove from its 31. Burnett, on a screen, dug for 19 to the Cincinnati 48. Soon Ricky Williams, on still another screen, slashed for 34 to the 12. Tony Johnson pulled in a toss from Blair Williams for a touchdown on a 12-yard play that, with Hall's point, brought it to 28-21 with about 2:40 left in the half.
Backed to its 20 after the second-half kickoff, Cincinnati got better position on a roughing-the-punter call. A clipping call by FSU on the return knocked the Seminoles back to their 8.
Runs by Ricky Williams and Burnett reached the 27, then Zeke Mowatt got 25 to Cincinnati's 48 on a screen pass. There the Seminoles stalled. Lowery punted to the 15.
Soon Peckich boomed a 50-yard punt, but Cedric Jones returned it 18 yards to the FSU 48.
Ricky Williams burst on a run for 28 to the 24. In two carries, Greg Allen gained the 8. But three more runs found the Seminoles at the 10. On fourth down, Hall kicked a 27-yard field goal for 31-21.
On second down, Deno Foster streaked behind defender Rocky Kinsey and scored for Cincinnati on a Barrett pass. The play covered 71 yards. Fogler kicked the extra point, and the score stood 31-28.
From the 21, Ricky Williams ran for 13. Mowatt's one-handed pass grab over the middle got 23 to the Cincinnati 40. The Seminoles were on the 14 as the quarter ended.
It came to fourth down, just short of the 8. Greg Allen, who might have been caught for a loss in the backfield, cut off tackle and scored easily. Hall booted another point, and it was 38-28.
Back came the Bearcats. Goosby took in a 15-yard pass at the 44, then Don Goodman ran for 13 to the FSU 43. Bill Booze collared a pass at the 20, and soon Goosby snared a first-down strike at the 10.
A pass missed, then Goodman pounded to the 1. Barrett got nothing on a sneak. On fourth down, Allen Harvin was nailed for a yard loss.
Three runs to the 8, and Lowrey punted 42, with Patterson almost away on the return - down to the 12. Three plays, however, lost a yard. On fourth down, with 5:37 to go, Folger kicked a 30-yard field goal that cut it to 38-31.
From their 36, the Seminoles pushed gingerly, trying to kill the clock but gambling with a clutch pass at times.
Incredibly, on third-and-seven, Williams threw a pass and Gibson intercepted the wide shot and scooted 56 yards down the sidelines to the 19. Manny Carballo, in at fullback, was the guy that caught him.
On first down, Barrett was smothered for a loss of 11 by the hard-charging Campbell. Then he threw three times into the end zone - all incomplete.
FSU took over with 19 seconds left. Blair Williams hit the deck once, then twice for losses - and the Seminoles' wildest opener was over.

It's the Pitts.
Panthers mob FSU in the second half.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The rain came - and Florida State went!
At halftime, all tied up 17-17, the Seminoles seemed to have much going their way, including a daring plan to confound Pittsburgh with the deep passes of one quarterback (Blair Williams) and the option trickery of another (Kelly Lowrey).
And then the bottom fell out. Literally. Seldom in history has Campbell Stadium been saturated with such driving rain during a football game.
Very soon a Florida State punt, deep in its own territory, went awry with a low snap, and a Pitt end picked up the ball for an easy touchdown that brought the score to 24-17.
From that point, it was pretty much all Pitt here Saturday night. The final score, before a drenched turnout of 56,236 (biggest crowd ever to see a football game in Tallahassee) was 37-17. The Panthers not only proved themselves far better mudders, but also a far better football team.
"We had to have an advantage, and we just flat didn't get it," said FSU coach Bobby Bowden. "When the rains came, it got cold. You ain't gonna believe it, but it was cold."
Bowden had hoped for a hot, humid night like those all week long, but a small afternoon rain and overcast skies had lowered temperatures just a bit before kickoff. Then came that second-half deluge, and the Seminoles' possible advantage in speed and familiarity with the heat went down the drain with that overflow from the field.
"They handled it better than we did," Bowden said. "They adjusted to our options, and when they shut that off, we were in no position to pass. It was just too wet. It was like trying to throw a brick."
Foge Fazio, the Pitt coach, seemed to agree. "The big factor in the game was the rain - unfortunately for Florida State," he said.
Florida State, which jumped out front early, 10-0, appeared to pull out all stops in a determined quest for an upset. The Seminoles outgained their high-ranked for, 357 yards to 309, including a surprising 237 rushing.
Dan Marino, the All-American passer, whom teammates call "Ice," played the cool game that the circumstances dictated. He was not dramatic, just quite efficient as he completed 13 of 22 throws for 133 yards and a couple of touchdowns.
Williams quarterbacked the Seminoles in front 10-0. Then when Pitt went ahead 17-10, Bowden switched to Lowrey and an option attack that had been plotted over the past two weeks and possibly longer. Lowrey directed the team to a tying TD his first crack out of the box.
But not a whole lot went right for the Seminoles in the offensive clutch during the final wet half. Eric Thomas, the sophomore, played the last couple of minutes at quarterback. Like Williams and Lowrey before him, he did well, too.
A 23-yard punt return by Cedric Jones to the Pitt 36 paved FSU's early touchdown, Greg Allen scoring from the 3. On the Seminoles' next possession, Blair Williams directed a movement from the 25 to a 29-yard field goal by Philip Hall.
On the ensuing kickoff, Pitt got a big return of 53 yards by Tim Lewis, down to FSU's 42. Eric Schubert cut it to 10-3 with a 39-yard field goal in the last minutes of the opening quarter.
Pitt drove 65 yards at the start of the second quarter, fullback Marion McIntyre scoring from the 3. That tied it.
On its next turn with the ball, Pitt moved 59 yards following a relatively short FSU punt. McIntyre scored from 4 yards out.
Then Lowrey came aboard, marshalling a 75-yard movement with key passes and options. Ricky Williams scored on a determined run from the 1, tying it 17-17 with a minute left in the half.
Despite the rain, Pitt pushed from the third-quarter kickoff on a fine drive from its 16 to FSU's 1 - where a pair of fumbles lost yardage before Larry Harris intercepted a Marino shot in the end zone.
A couple of minutes later Lowrey went back to punt after getting sacked at his 15. The snap was low, and he could not get a quick grip. After the ball shot straight up in the air, end Art Lowery grabbed it about the 5 and scooted in for the touchdown.
Florida State drove, but that effort played out when Cedric Jones was intercepted at the Pitt 10. The Seminoles had gained a first down at the 10. It was just about the Seminoles' last shot.
Marino directed another long push, this one 77 yards. He got the touchdown with a 16-yard pass to Julius Dawkins over the middle. And it was 30-17 with 8:54 left in the game.
Pitt's last touchdown, with 2:15 to go, was a gift following a futile fourth-down Lowrey pass from the FSU 17. Marino threw 3 yards to James Brown for the touchdown.
It was the first loss of a home game at night for the Seminoles since Houston five years ago.
"I definitely think Pitt should be No. 1, coming down here and beating us like that," said Bowden. "It takes quite a football team to do that."

Lowrey sparks 'Noles.
HATTIESBURG, MS - With a stunning passing game engineered by Kelly Lowrey, Florida State drove and drove and drove here Saturday night.
And the Seminoles pulled out a 24-17 football victory over Southern Mississippi in a hair-raising offensive struggle.
Going all the way at quarterback, Lowrey hit 22 of 35 passes for 286 yards and a couple of touchdowns. Never mind that Sam Dejarnette ran for a school-record 304 yards in 43 carries against FSU. The Seminoles did what they had to do to stop gifted quarterback Reggie Collier, and they took their chances with Dejarnette.
FSU busted a 17-17 tie with an 80-yard drive in the fourth quarter, Lowrey scoring the winning touchdown from 2 yards out on a fake field goal.
It was mildly surprising that Lowrey opened at quarterback for Florida State, but he came out passing.
From the 20, Tony Johnson caught a throw at the 36. Then Ken Burnett pulled in one at the 50.
Then Lowrey went long, and cornerback Bruce Miller intercepted for Southern at the 3.
On second down, Reggie Collier rolled out and sped to the 23. Soon the quarterback turned loose tailback Sam Dejarnette - the Auburn transfer - on several runs. His big gainer in a move to a first down at FSU's 33 was an 18-yarder to the Seminole 45. Collier led on to a first down at the 21.
There the Seminoles stiffened. Two runs were stopped at the 16, and a pass missed.
Steve Clark, going for his 13th straight field goal, missed the 32-yarder.
Lowrey, on second down, passed to Tony Johnson at the FSU 46, but the receiver fumbled when hit, and cornerback Miller recovered for Southern.
The running of Dejarnette led to successive first downs at the 36 and 26. Then linebacker Tommy Young trapped Clemon Terrel for a loss of 4.
When Clark tried a 48-yard field goal, Young whipped through to block it.
Ricky Williams popped for 12 yards before Johnson got 24 yards out of a pass down to the Southern 32. Soon an 18-yarder to Johnson gained the 11. But another Lowrey shot was tipped by Eddie Ray Walker then intercepted in the end zone by Scott Allen.
Southern could not move from its 20, and when Bruce Thompson tried to punt he was swarmed by Seminoles - Ken Roe blocking the ball and David Ponder picking it up and moving about 5 yards to the 6.
Lowrey was caught for a yard loss, but on third down he passed 3 yards to Zeke Mowatt for a touchdown. Philip Hall added a point for 7-0 with 1:13 left in the quarter.
From its 24, the Golden Eagles marched with some determination after the kickoff. The running of Dejarnette was the big instrument.
On the first play of the second quarter, the tailback broke up the middle for 41 yards to FSU's 15, and he ran his total to 114 yards in 11 carries.
Dejarnette followed that with four straight carries. It came to fourth-and-one at the 6, and he got the needed yard by perhaps a half-inch. On a keeper, Collier loped in for the touchdown. Clark kicked a point for a 7-7 tie.
The Seminoles drove from their 22.
Johnson and Mowatt caught passes for 15 yards apiece. Then Johnson grabbed a 17-yarder at the 30. Three plays later he caught a 16-yard toss at the 17. Greg Allen's running got a first down at the 3.
Then on an apparently busted play, Lowrey lost 8 yards. Next play, Walker intercepted his pass at the 1.
After three downs, Southern seemed stopped at their 10. But on the punt FSU had 12 men on the field, and Southern got new life at its 25. Three additional downs precipitated a punt that gave FSU the ball at its 32.
An 18-yard throw to Johnson gained Southern's 48. On the draw, Ricky Williams dashed to the 26. Soon Burnett, on a pass, got 14 to the 10. After Burnett reached the 5 on a run, Lowrey was sacked at the 19 on third down.
Hall kicked a 35-yard field goal for 10-7 with 42 seconds left in the half.
Pinned at its 8 following the kickoff, Southern ran out the clock.
At this midway point, the Seminoles had 243 yards, the Eagles 209. Almost all of FSU's yardage was on passes, with Lowrey hitting 13 of 18 for 202. And nearly all of Southern's was on runs, with Dejarnette scampering for 140 yards on 21 carries.
Johnson caught seven of Lowrey's tosses for 129 yards.
Collier had been restricted to three completions of eight passes for 23 yards and to 38 additional yards on eight runs.
On three straight runs after Southern began on its 20 at the start of the second half, Dejarnette bounced to the 35.
After a short pass attained the 43, Dejarnette popped up the middle and was suddenly clear on a 57-yard race with nobody to the end zone. The secondary was bunched close to the line of scrimmage. No defender had a shot after the tailback broke free in the first few yards.
Clark's kick made it 14-10.
FSU found itself in poor position at its 12 after the kickoff.
Burnett nursed it out to the 23 on a pair of passes. On successive pitchouts, Williams dug for 16 and 13 to the Southern 48. Then, after a pass to Johnson at the 28, a roughing-the-passer penalty gave FSU the ball at the 15.
Greg Allen swept to the 8, and Burnett ploughed to the 6. On a quick swing pass, Burnett scored easily. Hall kicked a point and FSU was back on top, 17-14.
With the aid of Ponder's sack of Collier, the Seminoles soon forced a punt and got the ball at their 39.
Two Williams runs almost immediately reached the Southern 46. There passes failed, with an official getting in the way of one completion.
When Brian Harlow went back to try his first punt, an illegal snap resulted in a 5-yard penalty against FSU. Then Harlow popped a 41-yarder to the 9.
After three futile plays, FSU regained the ball at Southern's 45 following a punt.
On a draw, Williams slipped to the 32, but Lowrey's following pass was intercepted by Allen at the 26.
A 12-yard pass to Louis Lipps attained the 39, but Florida State was confusing Collier with varying, shifting defensive tactics. Another punt was forced - and this one backed FSU to the 12 as the last quarter started.
Two incompletions were sandwiched around a 2-yard run. When Harlow went back to punt, FSU again was penalized for an illegal snap. Harlow finally got off a 38-yarder that Lipps returned inside the 10 - but a clipping call set Southern back to its 45.
Here came Dejarnette - on three pounding runs in a row - to FSU's 16. Collier got a first down at the 10. Dejarnette smashed to the 3. But Ponder stopped Dejarnette for no gain, and Collier was snagged by Larry Harris for a loss of 1.
It came to fourth down, and Clark kicked a 20-yard field goal, tying it 17-17.
Cedric Jones caught a 12-yard pass at the 32. Lowrey kept for 12 then for 4 to the 48. Johnson pulled in another at Southern's 35. A Greg Allen run keyed a first down at the 20. Mowatt grabbed a toss at the 9. On an option pitchout, Allen swept to the 2. But on two tries Allen got nothing more.
On fourth down, FSU lined up for a field-goal try - but it was a fake all the way. Lowrey, down to hold, took the snap, raised up and ran off tackle for a very easy touchdown. Hall added a point for 24-17 with 5:20 to play.
With Dejarnette, Southern got to its 32 but not much further. With 2:59 to play, a long punt trickled into FSU's end zone.
With Southern calling time outs, few seconds were expended as three plays lost 2 yards for FSU.
Harlow got off a punt that rolled well, 52 yards to the Southern 29 with 2:12 left.

Fantastic!
Seminoles
Upset
OSU
COLUMBUS, OH - The biggest football crowd in Ohio State football history didn't want to believe its eyes.
Continuing to shake down some surprising thunder, Florida State romped 34-17 on a steamy Saturday afternoon as Ohio Stadium's all-time record turnout of 89,491 mopped sweaty eyebrows.
The temperature was in the 80's, and FSU coach Bobby Bowden said he was positive it was around 100 on the artificial turf down there.
"Our hard work paid off for us," said Bowden. "We were ready for that heat."
You would perhaps number Seminole heroes by the dozen, but surely none was happier than Blair Williams - and maybe none, really, played a more vital role in this shocker.
A starter in the first two games but a bench-warmer last week as Kelly Lowrey took his place at quarterback, Williams moved into action for the first time late in the fourth quarter. Florida State nursed a slender 21-17 lead.
First shot, the Tallahassee senior directed an 80-yard scoring drive that gave Florida State breathing room. He passed 9 yards to Jessie Hester for that touchdown.
Next shot came almost immediately - following a Larry Harris recovery at the Ohio State 22 of Jimmy Gayle's fumbled kickoff return. Williams stayed on the ground and got a clinching touchdown in four plays, on Ricky Williams' magnificent 10-yard burst that saw him hit the middle and then cut outside.
Could anyone have written a script that would have turned out any better for Williams?
"I don't this so," he said. "I don't think it could have been any better."
Lowrey had quarterbacked splendidly, but he took a hard lick late in that third quarter and walked off with a bruised hip - bringing the decision for substitution. (Trainer Don Fauls later indicated the injury was nothing to worry about.)
Whether Williams arrived at an opportune time, with a weary Ohio State on the ropes, is a matter of conjecture. Whatever, school was soon out after he stepped onto the field for the first time. His execution seemed flawless.
The victory - second straight for the Seminoles on this historic old field - left Florida State in wonderful shape. Next come two home games - homecoming next week against Southern Illinois, then East Carolina. FSU's record is 3-1, and no out there would have dreamed that.
From the first play, when Tony Smith ran a reverse for 16 yards, Florida State asserted itself and dominated the Buckeyes with its attack.
But Ohio State got a 7-0 lead after backing the Seminoles inside their 10 with a punt. As FSU tried to get out of that hole, Ken Burnett fumbled and the Buckeyes got a shot from the Seminole 12. Tim Spencer scored on an 8-yard scamper with a pitchout.
Greg Allen whipped 35 yards with the following kickoff, out to the 40. Lowrey gat FSU close with Passes, including a 25-yarder to Tony Johnson at the 7.
On one of Bobby Bowden's familiar trick plays, Lowrey handed to Cedric Jones, who passed to Lowrey moving wide for the touchdown on an 11-yard play, tying it 7-7.
It was the first of three successive touchdown plays that saw extraordinary contribution from the versatile Lowrey.
Kelvin Lindsay's 75-yard kickoff runback soon set up Ohio State at FSU's 25, but all the Buckeyes got out of that was a 40-yard Rich Spangler field goal that boosted the first-quarter score to 10-7.
Early in the second period, Lowrey cashed an 80-yard scoring march with a 6-yard pass to wide-open tight end as the play flowed the other way. Allen's running was a considerable key in paving that score - one that put FSU on top to stay, at 14-10.
Soon Larry Harris got the Seminole in position at the Ohio State 30 with an interception and nifty 35-yard runback. Allen scored from the seven on a startling, last-split-second pitchout from Lowrey. That brought it to 21-10.
FSU was driving again but Ohio State covered a Mowatt fumble after a pass reception and moved from the Seminoles' 45.
By this time, Mike Tomczak, the sophomore who started at quarterback, was on the bench to stay. Brent Offenbecher, a junior, was in there the rest of the way.
A couple minutes before halftime Offenbecher cut the score to 21-17 as he hit Spencer in the end zone with a 31-yard scoring strike.
No one would have guessed that the home team was through scoring for the day. Bowden included.
He was thinking that the Seminoles could have recruited Offenbecher - a Massilon, Ohio, product - in a year that saw FSU sign a half-dozen heralded quarterbacks. FSU sort of backed off on Offenbecher, who signed with Wake Forest, later transferring to Ohio State. "And I'm thinking this guy we passed on may come out there and beat us," said Bowden.
Linebacker Tommy Young twice pulled off interceptions in the third quarter that discouraged Offenbecher and friends more than somewhat, but the Seminoles got nothing out of the opportunities.
Late in the quarter Ohio State pushed to FSU's 30. But on third down, Alphonso Carreker and Allen Dale Campbell sacked Offenbecher for a loss of 10 at the 38, putting Ohio State out of field-goal range.
Lowrey had been shaken up on the previous series, and it was at this point that Williams entered - following an Ohio State punt that rolled into the end zone.
From the first play, when he sent Greg Allen crashing for 20 yards on a draw, Williams seemed as poised as his predecessor.
"The heat was definitely a factor," said FSU's Bowden. "It's funny that we needed the weather against Pittsburgh and didn't get it - and we come up here and get a very, very hot day.
"I thought it really showed in the second half. We just couldn't get the final blow we needed to put the game away.
"Then Blair did an outstanding job coming in there in a tough situation. I was really proud of the way he played and the whole team played in that second half."
The Seminoles stacked up 476 yards, to Ohio State's 371, and controlled the football, 83 plays to 70. FSU got 294 of its total on the ground as the tailback tandem accounted for 181 - Ricky Williams getting 77 yards on 16 runs, Allen 104 on 18. Lowrey hit 14 of 23 passes for 130 yards, Williams 4 of 6 for 61, and Tony Johnson again was a top receiver with 5 grabs for 90 yards.
Bowden was unhappy with kick coverage and four lost fumbles. (Ohio State had five turnovers, four on pass interceptions.)
Saturday's success followed a memorable 36-27 victory here last year, and the last time Ohio State lost in successive years on this field to the same team was '63 and '64 to Penn State.

59-8.
FSU keeps Salukis on very short leash.
TALLAHASSEE, FL – Out of the blocks a little slowly, Florida State broke free in the second quarter and raced on to a 59-8 football victory over Southern Illinois here Saturday night.
It was only 3-0 after that first quarter, but a homecoming crowd of 51,233 just sat back and relaxed after the Seminoles had taken over 31-0 at halftime.
Mostly the 4-1 Seminoles did it with passes – and Southern Illinois mistakes.
Twice in the game’s first series Southern Illinois drew penalties for delay. When Rich Williams punted from the 15, Cedric Jones wheeled it back 31 yards to the visitors’ 19.
On third down at the 15, Kelly Lowrey seemed trapped for a loss when he fired to Jessie Hester at the 2. On second down, Greg Allen seemed to ram over from the 1 but officials ruled him down at the 1-foot line.
On a surprising call, Lowrey rolled out and was sacked at the 4. Philip Hall came on and booted a 21-yard field goal for 3.
The Salukis probed to their 42, mainly on a Rick Johnson pass to Pierre Pugh. Soon Williams got off a boomer of a punt, 55 yards and out of bounds at FSU’s 7
It took Ricky Williams two runs to reach the Seminole 38. Greg Allen ran for 10 then 5, after which he caught a Lowrey pass for 21 to the 26. On a 9-yard run, Ken Burnett got a first down at the 12. Two more runs attained the 5, but on a sweep Allen lost 4.
A fake field goal saw Lowrey, down to hold, rise and throw to Billy Allen for an apparent touchdown, but the play was rubbed out by a penalty – an illegal receiver downfield. The penalty also called for a loss of down, and Southern Illinois took over at its 14.
Unable to cut out a first down, the Salukis again punted, this time to the 50.
On a third-down pitchout, Allen scampered wide for 30 yards to the 15.
But a draw play lost 5, and a pass missed. On a fake reverse, flanker Dennis McKinnon stopped short, threw into the end zone – and a passing interference call got FSU a first down at the 1.
On second down, Lowrey sneaked over for the touchdown, and FSU was in front 10-0.
Southern struggled to a first down at its 35. Linebacker Ken Roe intercepted when Johnson threw a bad pass under pressure, and FSU was in business at the 33.
But nothing came of it. Allen lost 3 yards on a pitchout. Two passes failed. Mike Rendina missed a field-goal try from the 52-yard range.
A pass to Pugh lifted Southern to its 47, but soon a handoff was fumbled. Brian Williams claimed it for Florida State at the visitors’ 46.
Lowrey threw to Tony Johnson for 17, then found freshman Hassan Jones in the end zone with a 28-yard shot for a touchdown. Hall’s kick brought it to 17-0 early in the second quarter.
Soon Scott Merson grabbed a Tony Anderson fumble for the Seminoles at Southern’s 25. A holding call cost the home team 10. But on third down Dennis McKinnon got 22 to the 12 on a Lowrey throw. Cedric Jones slammed up the middle to the 2, and Greg Allen somersaulted into the end zone from there. The score jumped to 24-0.
A pass to Pugh, then an interference call on Harvey Clayton got the Salukis to FSU’s 45. Marvin Hinton immediately snagged a 30-yard toss at the 15.
Two passes missed before tackle David Ponder sacked Johnson for a loss of 12 at the 37. On fourth down, Allen Leslie failed on a 45-yard try for a field goal.
Blair Williams stepped in at quarterback. Three short plays reached the 41, but Williams then got sacked for a loss of 8. It came to fourth-and-two at the 49, and the Seminoles gambled – and lost, failing on an option run by the quarterback.
The Salukis penetrated to FSU’s 35. Then Harvey Clayton intercepted a Johnson throw and raced down the sidelines for an apparent touchdown return of 73 yards, but a clipping call nullified the touchdown. FSU, instead, started at Southern’s 47.
Two plays did it. Williams passed 27 yards to Ricky Williams, then 20 to Jessie Hester for the touchdown. Hall’s point made it 31-0 with a bit over a minute left in the half.
At this point, FSU led in yardage, 283 to 110. With 10 completions of 19 attempts for 177 yards, the Seminoles were most effective in the air.
Greg Allen sped 47 yards with the third-quarter kickoff, down to Southern’s 45. More runs by Allen led to the 19, where a fourth-down pass to Dennis McKinnon reached the nine. Three plays later Cedric Jones scored from the 1, boosting it to 38-0.
More pressure of Johnson brought another bad pass, and Roe picked it off for the Seminoles at Southern’s 40. Swarmed under on the play, Johnson lay there for several minutes before being carried off the field.
Three plays netted nothing. Brian Harlow went back for his first punt of the night, but it never happened.
The snap sailed far over his head. Harlow chased the ball, finally picked it up about FSU’s 20, retreated for some running room and was pushed into the end zone for a safety. That gave FSU a free kick and Southern position at its 47 following a 26-yard return.
A little later Florida State started at its 8 following a punt.
A 25-yard Lowrey pass to Allen at the 35 got FSU out of the hole.
On one play Lowrey was intercepted, and Southern had position at FSU’s 34 following Terry Taylor’s theft. And on the next play Rich Williams – in for Johnson at quarterback – fumbled when dogged by Allen Dale Campbell. Alphonso Carreker recovered for FSU at the 43.
Once Allen lost 10 yards and once Lowrey did, but in the end Lowrey fired to Hester for a touchdown on a 57-yard touchdown play. Now it was 45-2.
On a Blair Williams pass to Tony Smith for 23, FSU was knocking at Southern’s 42 as the quarter ended.
A couple of plays later Williams unleashed a bomb that Billy Allen tucked in just short of the goal, scoring on a 39-yard play.
From the Southern 48, following a punt, the Seminoles scored in four plays, with Tony Smith getting 28 yards on a run for a TD.
After the score reached 59-2, Harlow got off his first punt of the night, a 37-yarder that placed Southern at its 17.
With about six minutes remaining, Eric Thomas got a turn at quarterback. A fumbled handoff was recovered by Southern’s Jerry Allen at FSU’s 31.
Darren Dixon, third Southern quarterback of the night, shot a 21-yard pass to Rich Blackman at the 5. A falling Tony Anderson caught a pass in the end zone for a touchdown as Florida State fans cheered the effort with 4:06 to go. The point-after missed, leaving it 59-8.
Billy Allen steamed 61 yards with the following kickoff, and a facemask penalty on the tackle gave FSU the football at Southern’s 26. But four following runs by Allen left the Seminoles at the 20. Southern took over.
Four Dixon passes brought a first down at FSU’s 7. On third down – and the game’s final play – defensive back Tracey Ashley intercepted an end-zone toss and raced to midfield before getting hauled down.

Home teams get happy.
FSU flattens East Carolina.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Greg Allen scored four touchdowns and Florida State racked up a school-record 706 yards Saturday night in a 56-17 romp over East Carolina.
The 5-1 Seminoles led 14-0 after a quarter and 35-0 at the half.
Allen scored the game's second touchdown on a 24-yard pass from Blair Williams. He got the Seminoles' third, fourth and sixth TDS on short runs. A crowd of 46,283 saw East Carolina battle gamely, but two FSU quarterbacks - Williams and Kelly Lowrey - seemed to complete passes almost at will.
From the start, Florida State acted like a team in a hurry.
On the game's first play from scrimmage, Kelly Lowrey threw a bomb that Jessie Hester tucked in with a superb catch at the visitors' 28. The play covered 41 yards.
Two runs by Ricky Williams, including a 15-yarder, got a first down at the 10. Cedric Jones whammed to the three. But Greg Allen was halted at the one, and subsequent runs by Jones and Allen got nothing. East Carolina took over at its two.
ECU got three downs and a punt - a booming 46-yarder out of the hole by Jeff Bolch, to FSU's 46.
Lowrey skipped 16 yards on the option, to the Pirate 38. Then he hit freshman Hassan Jones over the middle at about the 20 and Jones dashed on to a touchdown. Philip Hall's point made it 7-0.
A Ken Roe sack of quarterback Greg Stewart for a loss of 9 discouraged the Pirates on the next series.
The teams swapped punts before Ernest Byner fumbled on a pitch and Roe recovered for FSU at the Pirate 30.
But Lowrey got swarmed under at the 44. Tony Smith got 12 back on a run, and a pass to Smith gained five more. On fourth down, after a time out, the Seminoles sent Blair Williams in at quarterback - and went for the first down.
A screen pass to Allen almost got it, but he was ruled out of bounds at the 21 and the Pirates took over there.
Stewart's third-down bomb was intercepted by Harvey Clayton at FSU's 31.
Allen popped for 15 on a run, and Tony Johnson snared a Williams pass for 30 at the Carolina 24.
On a flare pass from Williams, Allen cut up the middle and scored on a 24-yard play. Hall kicked: 14-0.
With 13 seconds left in the first quarter, safety Larry Harris picked off a Stewart pass and put FSU in business at Carolina's 26.
A 10-yard throw to Zeke Mowatt reached the 12. But, after a sack of Williams, it came to third down at the 16. Racing wide, fullback Jones threw into the end zone toward Johnson - and got an interference call there on a Carolina defender. FSU was awarded a first down at the one.
Greg Allen scored easily, and with Hall's kick made it 21-0.
East Carolina turned to the run. Byner and Stewart were the notable contributors in a series of chopping gains. A couple of offsides calls against the Seminoles helped in a 51-yard drive to a first down at FSU's 24.
On fourth down from the 22, Jeff Heath kicked a 390yard field goal, making it 21-3.
A Lowrey pass to Dennis McKinnon got 20 to the Pirate 48. On a nifty run, Smith danced for 29 to the 19. Lowrey got seven on a ball fumbled out of bounds, but clipping set the Seminoles back to the 26 on another Lowrey keeper, and then Clint Harris intercepted Lowrey's shot in the end zone.
A 67-yard Jeff Bolch punt backed FSU to its 11.
Lowrey promptly passed to Cedric Jones at the 23. Next he fired a bomb that Dennis McKinnon gathered in for a 67-yard gain to the 10. Jones smashed to the 5 and Allen dived over the line - dived the entire five yards, it seemed - to score. Hall booted another point: 28-3.
Tony Baker got 15 on a run, and Ricky Nichols 23 on a pass to place the Pirates at FSU's 24. But Clayton intercepted at the five, and returned 42 yards to the 47 with about 90 seconds remaining in the first half.
Smith carried for 11 and Jones for 14, before Lowrey fired to Jessie Hester for a 28-yard TD. Hall made it 35-3.
At this halfway point, the Seminoles had run up a staggering 426 yards - 277 of it passing. Lowrey had hit on 8 of 12 for 208, and Williams 4 of 5 for 69. East Carolina had 131 total, 109 of it running - and completed only one pass while getting three intercepted.
Soon Florida State was on the board again.
Early in the third period, Larry Harris intercepted and gave FSU a shot from the Carolina 30. A 29-yard Lowrey pass to Hester reached the three. From the one, Allen scored his fourth TD of the night. Hall kicked, and it was 42-3.
With Kevin Ingram moving in at quarterback, the visitors again got something going with the run. Mainly, it was two big gainers by Ingram on keepers that led to a first down at FSU's 27. From the 16, Byner bounced up the middle for the touchdown; two or three tacklers had good shots but missed.
Backed to the nine following a poor kickoff return and penalty, the Seminoles got out from under on a 26-yard Allen run to the 35. Smith tore away on a run to midfield. Williams sailed a pass into Johnson's arms at the Carolina 30, then hit Mowatt at the 18 - but the tight end fumbled when hit and the Pirates recovered.
Again, Ingram got the Pirates going with runs. His keeper sparked one key early first down. Scott Lewis banged 12 yards to the 50 for another, and crunching short-gainers on the ground led the way to the FSU 40.
Abruptly, on a draw play, Tony Baker sprung for 36 yards to the 6.
On the first play of the final quarter, Baker scored from the two on a pitchout, and the score was 42-17.
At the 12 after another poor kickoff return, Williams tried a bomb to Weegie Thompson, who dropped it just over the 50. Cedric Jones caught a short one at the 29. Then Hester pulled in a 40-yarder at the Pirate 31.
A holding call and a couple of futile passes left the Seminoles at the 30. On fourth down, Williams passed to Cedric Jones at the 19.
Three plays later Jones ran for 11 to the 5. From there, Allen had tow carries, fumbling the second, recovering at the two. Then Williams threw wide to Hassan Jones in the end zone for an easy touchdown, vaulting the score to 49-17.
At this point FSU had 635 yards - more than they had ever registered in any game in history, topping the 626 of a losing 28-26 game against Memphis State here in 1969.
Nichols' kickoff return had Carolina at its 42. But a fourth-down gamble at the 50 was a yard short. FSU took over.
Immediately, Williams threw to Allen for a touchdown on a play that covered 51 yards - but a clipping call nullified it, and FSU settled for a gain of 30. After an Allen run reached the 16, Williams whipped a throw to Weegie Thompson for the touchdown.
A Baker fumble and Gary Henry recovery gave FSU a chance from the Carolina 42.
Bob Davis got a first shot at varsity quarterback action with the Seminoles. Four runs, the last a keeper by Davis, got a first down at the 30. Four more downs found FSU at the 31, and East Carolina had another opportunity with a couple minutes to play.
Ingram, on a keeper, got to FSU's 46, then was sacked. The Pirates ran out of downs, and Davis came back in to run a couple of closing plays.

FSU bowls 'em over.
'Noles glory in 24-7 win.
MIAMI, FL - A longtime University of Miami football watcher paused as he slowly made his way toward a gate. He turned and said: "It has been a long time since anybody blew out a Miami football team like this."
And a losing coach minced no words. Florida State's performance, said Miami's Howard Schnellenberger, was the finest of any opponent in the Orange Bowl during his time. The score, he said, could have been worse.
If, from Florida State's standpoint, the game was not altogether what it might have been, it was indeed something. The Seminoles did what they most needed to do in a number of clutch situations and prevailed 24-7 Saturday.
"Our goal-line stand won it," said a happy Bobby Bowden in the Seminole dressing room just after.
A lot of things won it, but when the Seminoles shut the door on Miami just before halftime following a Miami first down at the FSU 4, it certainly made the task a great deal easier. Also, at that point, it preserved the Seminoles' 10-0 lead.
But many in the announced crowd of 54,962 on this warm, overcast afternoon thought that the play that sealed it came at the opening of the last quarter. Florida State stood at the Miami 24, fourth down and 4 yards to go.
On a fake screen pass, Kelly Lowrey threw to Orson Mobley over the middle, and the giant - 6-foot-5, 260-pound - tight end smashed on and over the goal for a touchdown that provided a 17-7 cushion.
School was about out when Gary Henry - playing strong safety after Larry Harris was sidelined on an early injury - intercepted a Mark Richt pass with 6:05 left.
The Seminoles killed the clock then got an insurance touchdown in the final minute. Brian McCrary set them up at the Miami 4 with his 45-yard runback of an interception. Greg Allen got the touchdown - his 12th of the season - from 2 yards out.
The victory lifted Florida State - ranked 12th nationally in the United Press International poll - to 6-1, with South Carolina, Louisville, LSU and Florida still to go.
It also burst Miami's 11-game home winning streak, gave Florida State a triumph in the Orange Bowl after three straight losses and propelled the Seminoles into the big-bowl picture.
Schools may start talking to bowl people Monday, but that means little. The day of determination is Nov. 20, the day FSU plays at LSU.
"We feel very fortunate to win this football game," said Bowden. "Miami has a fine team. The things we thought would go, they wouldn't let us have.
"They took the option away, for one thing, and we had to work back more inside."
Bowden tipped his hat to Mark Richt, the Miami quarterback who, time after time, got the Hurricanes out of holes with big third-down plays.
"He played a great game," said Bowden. "I mean, we had him trapped again and again - and here he gets out! Fantastic!"
The action started slowly - Lowrey was off target.
Bowden later tried to explain: "Kelly didn't have the … uh … the uh … whatever it is … early in the game."
So Blair Williams went in at quarterback and stayed there for almost half the game. Then Lowrey returned - steadier now - to mop up.
Lowrey said he was simply too nervous at the start.
On the game's first play, Ricky Williams got 24 yards for FSU on a fake reverse, but the Seminoles stalled. Harris set up FSU at the Miami 48 when he intercepted Richt's first-play pass. Again, FSU could not move.
A third opportunity, paved by Tony Smith's 32-yard scamper on a statue-of-liberty play, played out when Mike Rendina missed a field goal into the wind from 43 yards out.
Soon, however, Henry tipped a pass that enabled linebacker Tommy Young to intercept, and FSU once more had the ball in Miami territory, at the 43.
This time Philip Hall kicked a field goal from 36-yard range, and Miami had yielded its first opening-quarter points of the season.
Williams came in for Lowrey with the start of the second quarter with a 15-mph wind at his back. Miami threatened, but a defense led by tackle Alphonso Carreker forced a punt. The boot placed FSU in a big hole at the 8.
On second down, Allen swung wide for 14 yards to the 22. A bit later, a 36-yard penalty - pass interference - got FSU to Miami's 27. Weegie Thompson, on a pass, and Smith, on a run, got 10 each. Allen took it to the 3, then scored on the next play.
Miami drove from its 20. On third-and-seven at his 24, Richt seemed trapped but got loose and passed to Mark Rush at FSU's 47. More big third-down plays by Richt led on to a first down at the 4.
It came to fourth down and a foot to go. Here came Young over the top and Warren Hanna from the side to nail Rush for a small loss that was very big.
The Seminoles took over and nursed the ball up to the 28 before halftime came.
Miami had the ball in the third quarter for all except 13 plays. The Hurricanes, on their second possession, got a pass-interference call on Hanna that knocked off 46 yards to FSU's 22. On third down at the 18, Richt seemed surely in the grasp of Young but slipped away and scrambled to a first down at the 3. Three plays later, Keith Griffin scored from the 1 to make it a 10-7 game.
A little later Miami's Jeff Davis, kicking into the wind, missed a 45-yard try at a field goal that would have tied it. The boot seemed strong and accurate before the wind caught it and knocked it down.
In came Lowrey - and away went the Seminoles.
Hassan Jones grabbed a 17-yard pass at the 50, Tony Johnson a 10-yarder at the 30. Then Miami tightened, and it came to fourth-and-four at the 24 with Mobley pulling in that big one on the opening play of the final quarter.
Miami pushed to FSU's 49, where on fourth-and-one a defense again led by Young granted not an inch.
Lowrey soon found Jessie Hester with a 38-yard scoring bomb, but it was rubbed out by an offsides penalty. The Seminoles drove to the 17, where they ran out of downs.
Then came Henry's interception and a little clock-killing before McCrary's interception and Allen's closing TD. In the last seconds Miami drove to FSU's 7, but that was it.
Miami got off more plays in this game, 76 to 71, but the Seminoles averaged 5.56 yards for each of their shots as they ran up a total of 395 yards, including 219 rushing. Miami got 364, with 273 passing, but a whole lot of it was not very meaningful.
FSU got 159 yards from its tailback tandem, Williams getting 87 in 11 carries and Allen 72 in 17.

FSU flies past S.C. 56-26.
COLUMBIA, SC - Clamoring for a spot among football's Top 10 and some big-bowl attention, Florida State shook off its mistakes and swooped past South Carolina 56-26 before 62,821 chilled fans Saturday afternoon.
The third biggest home crowd in Carolina history - sitting in a recently expanded stadium on a sunny but rather nippy day - got an eyeful of Greg Allen.
The sophomore tailback, checking in as the nation's leading scorer, ran for four touchdowns and pushed his season total to 16, his point total to 96 - an average of 12 per game. Going in, Allen was second nationally in scoring.
Eleven different receivers, topped by gifted Jessie Hester, also left the crowd pop-eyed as Florida State accumulated 437 passing yards among a 536 total.
Quarterbacks Kelly Lowrey and Blair Williams simply butchered a highly vulnerable secondary with their throws. Hitting on 14 of 24 for a couple of touchdowns, Lowrey accounted for 269 yards. Blair Williams completed seven of 15 for 168 and one touchdown.
It could have been worse - much worse. Receivers dropped at least seven passes.
Dennis McKinnon had a showpiece catch - a late one from Williams for 83 yards and a touchdown. Weegie Thompson wrestled down one for a 48-yard payoff, and Tony Johnson scored on an 18-yard toss - both from Lowrey. Hester did not score but was a powerful and dramatic figure, once making successive catches for 22 and 57 yards that set up a TD at the Carolina 4. He caught only one other, another 22-yarder that led to another score.
What it all seemed happily to add up to for the 7-1 Seminoles was (1) a very probable ranking among the nation's Top 10, (2) much stronger consideration by the Orange, Cotton, Sugar and Fiesta bowls, and (3) just probably - with LSU's upset of Alabama - a network-TV date in Baton Rouge one week from next Saturday. There had seemed no chance of network TV of the LSU-FSU game, but Saturday's happenings may well change that, and it could be a national rather than regional date.
"It might have been a pretty good day for Florida State," said Bobby Bowden.
Not so for South Carolina.
"A great disappointment - a great frustration," said Richard Bell, the first-year coach whose Gamecocks are now 3-6. "It was a nightmare."
It was a game that may cause a little tossing and turning among FSU coaches as well. There were four blocked punts - two by each team - and 13 penalties, seven against FSU for 79 yards.
But the two that Florida State blocked were the most telling, coming on consecutive South Carolina series in the third quarter and turning a 28-12 lead into an insurmountable 42-12 with 7:20 remaining in the period.
Linebacker Ken Roe blocked the first boot and cornerback Warren Hanna the second. Roe's effort resulted in a punt that trickled 15 yards, giving FSU possession at the Carolina 49. It seemed to set the Seminoles on fire. Two plays later Thompson made a leaping catch of a medium-range Lowrey throw and scored on a 48-yard play. Moments later Hanna picked up the ball after blocking it and scoring on a 29-yard play.
Two of Florida State's final three games will be at home. Sandwiched around the Nov. 20 date at LSU are Louisville next Saturday and Florida Dec. 4 - both in Campbell Stadium. With a decision over Louisville the Seminoles take an 8-1 record into bowl-picking day on the 20th, not earlier than 6 p.m.
The two Brian Harlow punts that Carolina blocked led directly to 10 points, but early indications were that Harlow was not at fault - blockers were.
The first blocked punt resulted in a safety, and the second, with 4:58 remaining in the game, produced eight - a touchdown by Glenn LeGrande, who picked up the ball that Paul Vogel had blocked, and a two-point conversion on a pass from Bill Bradshaw to Ira Hillary.
Though the Seminoles long before had emptied their bench of reserves and had as many as six freshmen in the defensive lineup in the late going, there was another slight taint late in the game. Carolina got a final touchdown with 1:22 to go on a 6-yard toss from Bradshaw to Hillary, capping a 63-yard drive paved by an interception off Williams.
Three of Allen's touchdowns came in the first half, two on 4-yard runs, the other on a 5-yarder. He got a third-quarter TD on a 12-yard scamper. Interestingly, he ran only 10 times all day for 46 yards - nearly half of FSU's total 99 on the ground.
Florida State's defense played a bigger role than the score suggests.
An interception by Tommy Young - who, along with fellow linebacker Ken Roe, again played superbly - provided impetus for FSU's first points, setting up the Seminoles at the 50. Lowrey's passing was a key all the way, with his 18-yarder to Johnson providing a 7-0 lead.
With a strong running game, the Gamecocks quickly tied it 7-7, maneuvering 70 yards with the help of a pass-interference call against Harvey Clayton at FSU's 23 and scoring on a 7-yard run by Thomas Dendy.
All day long, however, when Carolina made a strong move, the Seminoles promptly countered it.
On the next series, FSU knocked off 83 yards in three plays - Lowrey hitting Hester for 22, then 57 at the 4, and Allen scoring from there.
Another interception - this one by Brian McCrary - set the stage at FSU's 40 early in the second period. Hester caught a vital 22-yard pass at the Carolina 24. Three plays later, Allen again got a TD from 4 yards out.
Carolina drove 80 yards to a 25-yard field goal by Mark Fleetwood, his 14th in 15 attempts this season, and that cut it to 21-10.
Soon after, it became 21-12 when somebody missed an assignment and Harlow had his first punt blocked - the line of scrimmage at FSU's 21. The ball rolled out of the end zone.
But the defense granted Carolina nothing on its next turn, and the offense moved 48 yards to a touchdown that brought it to 28-12 with 53 seconds left in the half. Tony Smith, Hassan Jones and Allen caught passes in a movement to the 6, and Allen again made scoring look easy.
It was tit-for-tat in the early going of the third quarter until Roe got a piece of that punt and Thompson made the over-the-middle grab that produced the 48-yard touchdown.
The Hanna made his big move on punter Chris Norman as the score jumped to 42-12. And a second McCrary interception, with a 43-yard runback to Carolina's 37, paved the way for more points in that prolific third quarter. On fourth-and-five, Orson Mobley hauled in a 20-yard pass at the 12, setting things up for Allen's last score.
Early in that final period, FSU was backed to its 17 following a penalty. Williams had a notion to get out of that hole in a hurry. He sailed a bomb into the hands of McKinnon at about Carolina's 35, and he outran the defense.
At this point, Florida State reserves were having an inordinate amount of fun, raising fists to the sky as they made big plays.
But after awhile they maybe got a little careless.
Florida State seemed to come out of the game reasonably well. Tailback Ricky Williams and end Garth Jax bruised some ribs. Defensive tackle David Ponder had a slight knee injury; Young, a bruised shoulder; defensive end Brian Williams, a sprained ankle; and fullback Manny Carballo, a mild concussion. Trainer Don Fauls said that list was not too bad for a game on artificial turf.
"I thought we did good overall," said Bowden. "South Carolina is a good team when they're consistent."
While the Gamecocks have been really consistent in a few positive areas, Florida State continues - one way or another - to produce points and yards like no previous team in school history.

Allen leads FSU to victory.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Bidding strongly for a big-bowl spot, Florida State rushed behind Greg Allen to a 49-14 victory over Louisville here Saturday night.
Scoring four touchdowns that ran his season total to 20, Allen ran 25 times for a staggering 173 yards.
Meanwhile, starting tailback Ricky Williams knocked off 140 yards in 10 runs.
The nation's leading scorer going in, Allen became the Seminoles' all-time high scorer for a single season with 120 points that eclipsed the 104 total of kicker Bill Capece in 1980.
Now 8-1, the Seminoles seem in prime position for an Orange Bowl invitation if they can get by Louisiana State next Saturday in Baton Rouge.
Bowl scouts from the Orange, Gator and Tangerine were on hand for a kickoff that came more than an hour later than normal to accommodate Turner Broadcasting System, which televised the game nationally.
While the Tangerine man said he presumed his event was out of the running, the Gator representative said his people would be happy as they could be if they could land the Seminoles.
Stan Marks, executive secretary of the Orange Bowl selection committee, indicated that Pitt and Florida State were the top teams under consideration to play the Big Eight champion, and he guessed that the bid might go to the higher-rated team of the two.
Greg Allen brought the opening kickoff back 35 to the 38, but Kelly Lowrey missed with his first two passes, and soon a punt plus a clipping call backed Louisville to its 13.
Ron Davenport, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound sophomore fullback, handled the ball six straight times for the Cardinals. His running led to the 25. Two Dean May passes for 10 and 16 gained FSU's 45. The Seminoles stiffened. A punt placed FSU at its 10.
And here came Greg Allen, ripping off 74 yards on his first five carries. A couple of clipping penalties rubbed out some of that yardage, however, and a pass-interference call at the Louisville 40 was a key in keeping the drive alive. On the next play Allen burst to the 7.
After two cracks, Allen had the ball at the 2. On a keeper, Lowrey scored easily. Philip Hall added a point for 7-0.
FSU kicked off short to the 31, trying to keep the ball away from Louisville's dangerous return man, Keith Humphries. A roughing-the-punter penalty on fourth down helped Louisville to FSU's 45.
Four plays later, when punter Phil Ellis tried again, he found Warren Hanna all over him - blocking the boot. Gary Henry picked up the ball about the Louisville 40 and raced down the sidelines for a Florida State touchdown. Hall made it 14-0.
For the third time in the opening quarter, Louisville moved across midfield. On a punt, Cedric Jones was nailed at the 2 as he tried to find running room.
A 14-yard screen pass to Ricky Williams helped get FSU out of that hole. Zeke Mowatt pulled in a 16-yard Lowrey toss at the 39. But again FSU was obliged to punt, and Frank Minnifield ran it back 15 yards to the Louisville 41.
Davenport fumbled on a first-down run, and Alphonso Carreker covered it for FSU at the Cardinal 43. The Seminoles got nothing. Allen twice was racked for short losses, and Lowrey was pressured on a pass so briskly that he threw incomplete.
Brian Harlow punted to the 16.
Led by the running of Lamar Cummings, helped along by a short pass to David Hatfield, Louisville moved quickly to its 48.
Suddenly, May uncorked a bomb that Mark Clayton tucked in at about the 5 - beating cornerback Harvey Clayton - for a touchdown on a 52-yard play, and with a point by Ellis it was 14-7 with 7:28 left in the half.
Tony Johnson and Jessie Hester caught passes for 12 and 13 yards, up to FSU's 46. Tony Smith popped wide on a run for 23 to the Louisville 30.
Allen slashed to the 16 - to the 11 - to the 3 - on successive runs. After Allen lost a yard, Smith scored from the 4, and it was 21-7 after Hall's boot.
Forty seconds before intermission the Seminoles boosted it to 28-7. From their 20, they moved on passes to Johnson and Zeke Mowatt to Louisville's 47. Soon Hester snared a 20-yarder at the 30.
An interference call on cornerback Roger Clay trying to cover Weegie Thompson presented Florida State with a first down at the 1. Allen got the touchdown from there.
Early in the third-quarter going, Hanna intercepted a deep May pass at FSU's 12. On a draw play, Ricky Williams broke it outside behind a block by Hester and scampered 48 yards to the Louisville 30.
In two runs, Allen reached the 11. Two plays later he scored on a wide run from the 7, and the score jumped to 35-7.
From the Tallahassee Democrat, November 14, 1982, other edition, page 11.
Louisville drove and scored on a 7-yard pass from May to tight end David Hatfield.
Staying on the ground, FSU rebounded immediately with eight consecutive runs that brought a TD - Allen scoring from the 1 - that jumped the count to 42-14.
Early in the final quarter, FSU took over at its 21 - and once again struck with a running game all the way en route to a score that made it 49-14. This time Allen went from the 4.
With Blair Williams nursing a case of flu, Rick Taylor came on late in relief of Lowrey at quarterback. Also sitting this one out were two key defenders, noseguard David Ponder and strong safety Larry Harris, both with knee injuries.
Florida State controlled the football, 84 plays to 69, in a game that had only two turnovers. Louisville lost a fumble and had one pass intercepted.
With Ron Davenport steaming for 101 yards in 20 carried, Louisville got 199 yards rushing among its total 355.
Florida State's passing game was not precisely sharp, as Lowrey hit on 10 of 21 for 127 yards. But Louisville's defense seemed to be a factor there.
Louisville had been the victim of three straight shutouts by Florida State. When the Cardinals got their first touchdown, it was their first points in 14 consecutive quarters against FSU.
Bowden was not terribly happy at halftime, and he told his Seminoles that they were not playing like a top 10 team.
"Our defense was not as tough as it should have been," he said. "They moved the ball pretty good at times."
The nation's second-leading team in both scoring and total offense going in, Florida State certainly should retain that position going into Saturday's big one at Baton Rouge.

Seminoles settle for Gator date.
Tigers trounce FSU 55-21.
BATON ROUGE, LA - The LSU Tigers, only slightly favored going into Saturday night's game with Florida State, turned the evening into a rout, defeating the Seminoles 55-21.
The Tigers scored first early in the first quarter, and although FSU tied it at 7-7 and 14-14, LSU led the rest of the way.
The win gives the Tigers a bid to play in the Orange Bowl New Year's Day. The Seminoles will play West Virginia in the Gator Bowl Dec. 30.
At the start of Saturday night's game, Florida State began at its 27 following the game-opening kickoff return by Ricky Williams. Two pass incompletions were sandwiched around Williams' 5-yard run. Brian Harlow's 35-yard punt placed LSU at its 33.
Two runs by quarterback Alan Risher helped the home team to its 39 but no further. It was the Seminoles' turn again after a punt to FSU's 29. Tiger defenders stopped Greg Allen and Cedric Jones cold on wide runs. Lowrey got 7 yards on a short pass, but that was all.
Harlow's 42-yard boot backed LSU to its 22. Dalton Hilliard's slippery running lifted LSU to its 39, but a penalty backed the Tigers to their 26. Clay Parker's 55-yard punt pushed FSU to its 16.
On a reverse, Allen to Jessie Hester, the wide receiver spun 30 yards to FSU's 46. A run by Williams led to the LSU 44. Soon Weegie Thompson snared a 20-yard pass at the 24. There it played out.
On third down, Lowrey got no protection as he faded to pass, and he fumbled when sacked by Jeff Dale. Al Richardson claimed it for the Tigers at the 24.
On third down, Risher hit tight end Malcolm Scott with a big 13-yard pass at LSU's 42. Next play Scott caught one at FSU's 46.
Then Hilliard got open over the middle, and Risher found him with about a 20-yard toss. The freshman skipped on, scoring on a 46-yard play. The extra-point kick brought it to 7-0.
LSU's kickoff was short, and Tony Smith brought it back to FSU's 44.
Cedric Jones pulled in a pass at the LSU 45. On third down, Jones caught another Lowrey shot at the 30. Apparently in trouble, Lowrey passed to Smith, who steamed to the 5 before getting cut down.
After a timeout, Allen dived over the middle, but Lowrey had retained the ball and scored easily on a rollout. Philip Hall kicked to tie it at 7-7 with 1:20 left in the quarter.
In the early moments of the second quarter, Florida State was on the move again from its 22. A big shot was a 28-yard Lowrey throw to Orson Mobley at LSU's 40. On a keeper, Lowrey reached the 34. On the next play, however, Lowrey was penalized for intentionally grounding a pass as he was swarmed, and the Seminoles were pushed back to their 49.
Zeke Mowatt pulled in a pass but fumbled when hit, and cornerback Eugene Daniel claimed the ball for LSU at its 38.
Risher fired to Eric Marin at FSU's 44. The running of freshman Garry James led to the 32. Risher kept to the 23.
Then Risher hit a streaking James in the end zone for a touchdown on a 23-yard play, and it was 14-7.
Reserve tailback Billy Allen gathered in the following kickoff and raced 47 yards to LSU's 30.
Trying to find passing room, Cedric Jones could not and lost 4 yards.
Then Smith, on a swing pass from Lowrey, picked his way across the field and abruptly cut up the middle for a touchdown on a 34-yard play. Hall tied it 14-14.
From its 38 following the kickoff, LSU got to Florida State's 36, mostly on runs by Risher and James. But Alphonso Carreker led a stand and forced a punt. It was a beaut - dead at FSU's 6.
On third down and needing a yard, Lowrey fumbled and fell on the ball at the 10 for a loss of 5.
That one may have been the turning point.
Harlow, from the end zone, got off a nifty punt up to the 50, but on a fake fourth-down punt at the 42, Tiger fullback Mike Montz took a direct snap and ran to a first down at the 38.
Hard running by Hilliard on successive carries brought a first down at the 3, and two plays later the freshman tailback scored from the 2 on a sweep. The kick made it 211-14 with 38 seconds left in the half.
Unaccountably, Tony Smith raced up to field LSU's short kickoff, fumbled the ball and the Tigers' Sean Moore claimed it at the FSU 34.
After a timeout, Risher promptly nailed Martin over the middle, and he broke away on a scoring dash into the end zone. Abruptly, it was 28-14.
At this point, LSU led in yardage, 281 to 238. One big difference: Florida State had three turnovers (all fumbles), and Louisiana State none.
Things were going LSU's way now.
Early in the third quarter, A swarm of Seminoles were around a Jesse Myles fumble - but the Tigers' Martin came up with it for a gain of 11.
Six straight times the dangerous Hilliard carried the ball. The first four times he banged for 11, 13, 10 and 12 yards - down to FSU's 14. It came to a first down at the 3. Three straight times Hilliard tried and came up short.
On fourth down, with the ball about a yard and a half from the goal, Hilliard swept wide for an easy six points, and the score jumped to 35-14.
It had been a time-consuming drive, eating up almost all of the first nine minutes of the quarter. On the 80-yard push, Hilliard carried 14 of 16 times.
Lowrey could get nothing going, and soon Harlow punted again.
Backed up on third down at his 30, Risher danced around, apparently looking for running room, then suddenly spotted a streaking Martin far downfield and lofted a bomb. It brought an easy touchdown on a 70-yard play, making it 42-14.
Florida State labored but could get no further than midfield.
Heavy fog started rolling in as Harlow punted once more with a bit over a minute remaining in the quarter.
As the last period started, Blair Williams replaced Lowrey at quarterback. On a sweep, Tony Smith sped for 20 to the FSU 49. Soon Williams caught a 21-yard pass at the 35. But a foul penalty and a sack of Williams knocked FSU back to its 39, and Harlow punted to the LSU 28.
Editors Note: With 7:57 to go in the game, Blair Williams threw a 20-yard TD pass to Jessie Hester and Hall made the point. LSU finished the scoring with 2:31 to go when Wickersham ran for a 12-yard touchdown. The PAT was missed and the final score was 55-21.

UF field goals win it 13-10.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Florida, playing it the way Florida State had hoped to, ran the Seminoles into the ground here Saturday night and won a 13-10 thriller.
Jim Gainey's 22-yard field goal won it, breaking a 10-10 tie with 3:32 showing on the clock.
But it was a strong running game, led by tailback Lorenzo Hampton, that was the game's decisive difference.
For the tie-breaking points, Florida drove on the ground from its 20 just after Philip Hall had missed a chip-shot field goal for the Seminoles from 26 yards out.
In the beginning, Florida State moved briskly.
The Seminoles won the coin toss and got a start from their 35 after a 34-yard kickoff return by Billy Allen. Ricky Williams popped for 4 yards, then 24 to the Florida 37.
An offsides call cost FSU 5. Then Greg Allen ran for 5, then 2, then pulled in a pass at the 24.
But two runs gained little, and another pass missed. On the throw, Hassan Jones seemed wide open, but Kelly Lowrey threw instead to Jessie Hester, who was well covered.
On fourth down at the 21, Hall kicked a 37-yard field goal to make the score 3-0.
The Gators took over. On third down from his own 24, Spencer Jackson seemed to drop Wayne Peace's pass at the 35, but officials ruled it complete. Next play, on a quick opener, Neal Anderson skipped all the way to Florida State's 27.
But on second down Warren Hanna caught Peace on a cornerback blitz for a loss of 12. A screen pass to Anderson reached the 25. On fourth down, however, Gainey was wide right with a 41-yard try for a field goal.
Then came trouble for FSU. After a procedure penalty of 5, Greg Allen was nailed by Roy Harris for a loss of 8 at the 12. Next play Lowrey was sacked at the 2 by Tim Newton. Then Ivory Curry intercepted Lowrey's throw at the 31.
For Florida, Anderson broke wide on a sweep but fumbled when hit. John McLean recovered for FSU at the 12.
Cedric Jones, trying to go wide, lost 4. Soon, Brian Harlow punted to the Gators at the Seminole 45.
Hampton's 10-yard run soon brought a first down at FSU's 30, but two procedure penalties in a row set Florida back to the 40. Two plays later Allen Dale Campbell picked off a Peace pass and gave Florida State a shot from its 45.
Blair Williams moved in at quarterback for the Seminoles. But FSU gained not a yard, and Harlow punted to the 17 on the second play of the second quarter.
For the first time, FSU defenders kept the Gators out of Seminole territory. Three plays gained just 5 yards. Ray Criswell got off a big punt that took a neat roll, to FSU's 25.
A penalty helped FSU to its 43. Then Williams hit Hester with a 22-yard toss and Tony Johnson with a 14-yarder that put FSU at the Florida 21.
With the blitz coming, quarterback Williams pitched out to Ricky Williams, who cruised to the 7. A penalty placed the ball at the 3. Greg Allen scored easily, and it was 10-0.
When Peace got the ball again, he tossed a 16-yard pass to Dwayne Dixon that moved the Gators to their 41. After Hampton rammed to the 47, a bad pitchout lost 6. Then tackle Brad Fojtik sacked Peace for a loss of 9 at the 32. But the punt, plus a clip, put Florida State in a hole at its 12.
Quickly, Ricky Williams broke on a run to the 25. He ran twice again and got to the 42. The bid played out at the 49, and Harlow's punt placed Florida at its 13.
It was at this point that rain started to fall.
Hampton snared a 19-yard pass at the 34. But Peace missed with more passes, and Ray Criswell's punt rolled out of bounds. FSU took over at its 23.
On a delay run, Greg Allen cut outside and bounced 36 yards to Florida's 40. It came to fourth-and-three at the 33, and FSU went for it. Williams pass was knocked down.
The Gators took over. On a first-down pitchout, Hampton sailed down the sidelines for 34 to FSU's 33. Another pitchout got Hampton to the 15. Then a third straight Hampton run got to the 8. But Gary Henry and Campbell stopped Hampton for a loss of 2, at the 10, on his fourth straight carry.
Bob Hewko, in at quarterback, called a timeout. Then he moved left and scored easily on a keeper as he suddenly cut off tackle.
Gainey's point after made it 10-7 with 1:18 left in the half.
Trying to bring the kickoff out of the end zone, Billy Allen was tackled at the 5.
Gingerly, Florida State stuck to the ground, but soon Greg Allen broke free on a 22-yard run to the 39.
After a timeout, FSU decided to throw - and Randy Clark intercepted at Florida's 47.
Florida had time for three passes - the last a 42-yarder from Peace to Dixon at FSU's 11 as time ran out in the half.
From its 20 after the second-half kickoff, Florida moved efficiently.
Three runs - two by Hampton - got 15. Then Dixon got 17 yards out of a Hewko pass, to the FSU 48. On third down, Hampton made a big catch for 17 at the 28.
From there Florida ran six consecutive times. On third down, Anderson came up 2 yards short at the 7. In came Gainey to kick a 23-yard field goal, tying it 10-10.
Quick stabs into the line by Ricky Williams lifted the Seminoles from their 20 to the 33 before a holding penalty slowed them. A couple of futile plays later, Harlow punted to the Gator 32.
Hewko got socked for a loss of 3, then failed on a pair of throws. FSU got the ball back at its 33 on a punt.
Tony Johnson pulled in a Lowrey pass at Florida's 47. Florida called a halt there, and Harlow punted to the 13.
On third down, Hewko's 11-yard toss to Hampton got a first down at the 26.
Five straight times Hampton got the football, on chopping runs to FSU's 46. Needing a yard for a first down, Anderson got nothing as Prince Matt forced a fumble with a hard hit. Ken Rose recovered for FSU at the 50.
Ricky Williams got 9, and Greg Allen made it to the 39. Two more plays, and Hassan Jones grabbed a 19-yard pass at the 18.
Bbut, after Cedric Jones slammed for 6 yards, Ricky Williams and Greg Allen were held to a yard each on successive runs.
Hall, who had gone 6-for-6 on his previous field-goal attempts, missed on a 26-yard effort. It was wide to the left.
Two Hampton runs, for 10 and 12, on successive plays vaulted Florida from its 15 to the 37.
With FSU tackle David Ponder and safety Gary Henry on the sidelines with injuries, Florida continued to move on the ground. Jones pounded for 10 to FSU's 49, and Anderson slipped loosed for 13 to the 36. On a big effort, Anderson got a first down at the 26 on a run for 7 three plays later.
Three more runs, and Florida was at the 15.
Safety Larry Harris nailed Hampton for a loss of 5, but on the following play Harris was called for interference against Dixon. Florida was awarded a first down at the 2.
Hampton got perhaps a yard. But twice Hewko came up short. Fourth down, and Florida called a timeout with 3:35 left. After a delay penalty, Gainey kicked a 22-yard field goal for 13-10.
Hester caught a 15-yard pass at FSU's 40. On third down, an interference call - Ivory Curry on Tony Johnson - gave FSU a shot from Florida's 43. With 1:32 to go, Hassan Jones pulled in a short throw at the 32.
Lowrey passed incomplete. Allen, on a surprise run, got just a yard. Again Lowrey missed with a pass. Under heavy pressure on fourth down, Lowrey scrambled and threw a pass up the middle - no good.
Florida took over with 52 seconds left and ran out the clock.

'Noles top Mountaineers.
Allens lead FSU to victory.
JACKSONVILLE, FL - Billy Allen scored on a 95-yard kickoff return and Greg Allen, the nation's scoring leader, tallied twice as Florida State overpowered 10th-ranked West Virginia 31-12 in the Gator Bowl football game Thursday night.
The unranked Seminoles, a slight favorite, turned the game into a rout on Blair Williams' 27-yard scoring pass to Dennis McKinnon with only 15 seconds left in the first half and on Greg Allen's two third-quarter scores, a 29-yard run and 1 1-yard dive over the Mountaineer line.
Greg Allen finished with 138 yards on 15 carries.
It was a bizarre game, most of which was played in light to moderate rain. The Mountaineers had a field goal and punt blocked and squandered several scoring opportunities, including one when Willie Drewrey raced 82 yards to the FSU 6 on the longest punt return in Gator Bowl history.
Both teams completed the season with 9-3 records, and the setback probably cost West Virginia its highest finish ever in the Associated Press poll.
WVU was ranked 10th in 1953, long before the AP began releasing a final poll after the bowl games.
In the beginning - almost 10 minutes later than scheduled - West Virginia started at its 29 following an opening kickoff return from the 4.
Soon Hostetler passed 17 yards to tight end Mark Raugh at the 49. The runs of tailback Tom Gray led to FSU's 32. Raugh pulled in a pass at the 21. But a run got only 2, and two passes missed.
When Paul Woodside tried a field goal from the 19, tackle Alphonso Carreker (official stats say it was Garth Jax) ripped through to block it. The ball rolled back to the 50. A roughing penalty presented FSU with a crack from the Mountaineer 35.
Sweeping wide on the wet field, Ricky Williams got 10, but three more plays netted only a yard. Mike Rendina, on fourth down, missed badly on a 40-yard try for a field goal.
Even with the help of an offsides call against the Seminoles, the Mountaineers could not cut out a first down. When Steve Superick punted, Warren Hanna and David Ponder (official stats say it was John McLean) tore in to partially block the ball. It died at West Virginia's 38.
Greg Allen grabbed a pass at the 23. Blair Williams was called for intentional grounding on second down, and the ball was moved back to the 28. Then Greg Allen dropped a pass from Williams at the 4. On fourth down, the Seminoles faked a field goal, with holder Kelly Lowrey retreating close to midfield and throwing futilely.
But on first down, Hosteller's pass was intercepted by Brian McCrary at midfield and FSU had still another shot - this time at West Virginia's 33.
A 10-yard pass to Dennis McKinnon soon had Florida State at the 18. Orson Mobley caught a short throw at the 13, then Cedric Jones pulled down a pass at the 3.
Allen slammed to the 1. Next play, Allen was decked for a loss of 2, back to the 3. Williams threw incomplete. On fourth down, Philip Hall kicked a 20-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.
The running of fullback Ron Wolfley spurred the Mountaineers from their 33 to the 50. On third down, Hostetler slipped up the middle on a big keeper for 9 yards and a key first down at FSU's 39. The Seminoles called a halt at their 32 on the first play of the second quarter.
On fourth down, West Virginia lined up - surprisingly - for an apparent punt. FSU called a time-out. After that, the Mountaineers decided to go for a field goal - and Woodside put it through from 48 yards out, tying the game 3-3.
Billy Allen tucked in the kickoff at the 5, whipped up to the 20 and slashed toward the sidelines. A couple of defenders found it a losing footrace from that point on. It was a 95-yard scoring return, a Gator Bowl record. Hall followed the touchdown with an extra-point boot that lifted the Seminoles to a 10-3 advantage.
Mickey Walczak popped on a sudden run for 13, from the 27 to West Virginia's 40. On third down, Hostetler again scrambled, for 14 to FSU's 42.
Defenders stopped the running again, forcing a punt that left Florida State in a hole at its 13.
A penalty after a 3-yard Ricky Williams run had the Seminoles back on the 9. A pass to Tony Johnson gained the 21.
Soon Brian Harlow got off his first punt, got a good roll, and it was a 39-yarder to West Virginia's 39.
With 7:09 left in the half, McCrary made a leaping interception of a Hostetler throw at the West Virginia 49 - first tipping the ball, then grabbing it as it came back down.
Three straight passes fell incomplete. Harlow's punt rolled into the end zone.
A pass to tailback Gray reached the 31. Gray and Wolfley spurred a push to the 42. Raugh caught a short pass at the FSU 49, and Wolfley pounded to a first down at FSU's 44. On third down, cornerback Harvey Clayton was flagged for interference on receiver Wayne Brown at the 23. But two runs got just 4, and Hostetler missed with a pass.
On fourth down, with 1:13 left, Woodside kicked a 34-yard field goal to cut it to 10-6.
On a reverse, receiver Hassan Jones passed in vain. Greg Allen broke for 16 yards on a run to FSU's 43. After a pass failed, Greg Allen dug for 14 to the Mountaineer 43. A pass-interference call at the 27, in favor of Hassan Jones, moved FSU close with 21 seconds left.
Under pressure, Williams fired to Dennis McKinnon, who made a tumbling catch at the goal line for the touchdown. The clock showed 15 seconds in the half as Hall kicked a point for 17-6.
West Virginia had time for a single run from scrimmage before the whistle blew.
At this halfway point, West Virginia had run 43 plays, Florida State only 27 from scrimmage. The Seminoles trailed in total yardage from scrimmage, 131 to 158. HSU had connected on just seven of its 18 passes while running the ball just nine times.
Also interestingly, West Virginia had the ball for 20:58 of playing time, FSU for 9:02.
Starting the third quarter, West Virginia tried an onside kick, but a Seminole claimed it at FSU's 44.
Third down at the Mountaineer 47, needing a yard for a first down, the Seminoles were hit with a costly holding penalty as Allen churned for yardage. The next play saw Williams sacked at his 37.
When FSU punted, Willie Drewrey gathered in the 41-yard effort and sprinted 82 yards to FSU's 7 before punter Harlow tackled him.
A run got a couple of yards, and a pass nothing. When Hostetler tried to throw again, Brad Fojtik nailed him for a loss of 11 at the 16.
When Woodside missed the 32-yard try for a field goal on fourth down, the Seminoles appeared to get a big lift.
Runs by Ricky Williams and Greg Allen soon gained the 44. Ken Burnett whacked to the Mountaineer 44 on a key pass. Two plays later Hassan Jones caught one at the 29.
On a sudden run, cutting quickly inside, Allen raced 29 yards for a touchdown. Hall's point brought it to 24-6.
West Virginia struggled up to its 40 before punting - and Cedric Jones returned the punt almost precisely to that line of scrimmage - but a clip nullified the return, and Florida State was placed at its 17.
A couple of plays later on a reverse, McKinnon sped 65 yards to the West Virginia 23. Greg Allen took it to the 8 on the next play. An interference call paved a first down at the 1. Greg Allen scored. Hall booted the point for 31-6.
Passing took the Mountaineers to midfield. An end-around by Gary Mullen picked up 29 to FSU's 23. Hostetler scrambled on to the 12. But, after a holding penalty, the Mountaineers failed to cross the goal line. Florida State took over at the 9 with 12 seconds left in the quarter.
Mixing a spot pass or two with running, Williams directed the Seminoles to West Virginia's 34 before a penalty set them back. Finally Harlow punted - a poor one to the 30.
With a bit over three minutes left, Steve Newberry intercepted a Williams throw at the West Virginia 4.
Kevin White replaced Hostetler at quarterback. The heralded Hostetler had hit just 10 of 28 passes for a mere 118 yards.
White passed the Mountaineers downfield. With 51 seconds left, he threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Darrell Miller, capping a 9-play drive from the 4. A passing try for 2 points missed, leaving it 31-12.
