Basketball Defeats UNF 86-58 in Season Opener.

by Kennedy Knisley, Sports Information Student Intern

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Senior M.J. Walker scored a game-high 17 points and No. 18 Florida State (1-0) opened its 2020-21 season with an 86-58 win against North Florida (0-4) at the Donald L. Tucker Center. The Seminoles maintained a steady lead throughout the game in winning its 24th consecutive game at home. The win was the Seminoles' sixth consecutive in the series against North Florida.

The win upped Florida State's record at the Tucker Center to 66-3 since a victory over Notre Dame on February 7, 2015. The Seminoles have won at home at a 95.6 percent winning percentage in the last four seasons.

The Seminoles dominated the first half, as they closed it out with a 36-21 lead over the Ospreys. The Seminoles utilized eight players throughout the first half who all played eight or more minutes and had 12 players play within the first seven minutes. Before the halftime buzzer, North Florida was able to close in on their deficit with back-to-back 3-pointers by sophomore Jose Placer.

Florida State out-rebounded the Ospreys 21-12 the first half. The Seminoles also had six steals in the first half and 12 steals overall, surpassing their average of 7.9 steals per game last year.

Florida State continued to roll to being the second half on a 3-pointer by senior M.J. Walker, extending the Seminole's lead to 39-21. The Ospreys responded, closing the gap to 58-47 in the middle of the second half. This was the smallest gap between the teams throughout the game. The Ospreys leading scorer, Dorian James, totaled 13 points and six rebounds.

The Seminoles expanded their lead to a game-high 30 late in the second half.

Walker finished with 17 points, four rebounds, and two assists. He added to his total of 132 career 3-point shots made. Walker was recently named to the prestigious Jerry West Award watch list, which is annually presented to the top shooting guard in college basketball. This is his second time on the watch list for this award; his first was during his freshman season of 2018.

Freshman Scottie Barnes made his Seminoles' debut with eight points, six rebounds, and six assists. He led the team in rebounds and assists, and made a show-stopping behind-the-back dunk near the end of the second half. The five-star recruit's much-anticipated debut was pushed back a week after the postponement of the Garner-Webb game that was supposed to open the season for the Noles.

Barnes was named as one of the 20 candidates for the prestigious Bob Cousy award, which is awarded annually to the nation's top point guard in college basketball. He also earned spots on the Naismith and Wooden Award Watch Lists, both prominent awards that are presented to the top college basketball player in the nation.

Redshirt junior RaiQuan Gray and sophomore Balsa Koprivica also had notable performances against North Florida. Gray had four steals, coming just one short his career high of five against Murray State in the 2019 NCAA Tournament. He also added five rebounds to the Seminoles' total of 42 against the Ospreys, who totaled 27 rebounds. With a history of dominating against the Ospreys, Koprivica also had a good performance with 13 points and five rebounds. He also scored 15 points when the two teams met last season.

Reigning ACC Coach of the Year, Leonard Hamilton, has won his 24th opener in the last 26 seasons. Tonight's win also extends the Seminoles' second longest streak in the nation of 39 consecutive non-conference home games.

Noles Take Down Indiana 69-67 in ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

by Kennedy Knisley, Sports Information Student Intern

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Freshman Scottie Barnes scored the game winning basket with 1.8 seconds remaining to play in overtime to lift No. 20 Florida State to a 69-67 win over Indiana at the Donald L. Tucker Center in the 22nd Annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Barnes was stellar in his first career overtime game as he scored his first career 3-point field goal and then hit the winner to help the Seminoles earn their 10th consecutive overtime victory.

Barnes totaled nine points, five assists, four rebounds, and four steals to help the Seminoles improve to 2-0. The freshman opened and closed out the game with field goals in only his second game and second start in a Florida State uniform. Barnes is a candidate for the Bob Cousy award and has earned spots on the Naismith and Wooden Award watch lists.

Indiana moved to 3-2 on the season.

The win was Florida State's 67th in its last 70 games at home. The Seminoles have now won 25 consecutive home games and 40 straight non-conference games at home.

Florida State turned up the defensive pressure in the overtime period. After surrendering an old-fashioned three-point play to Indiana's Trayce Jackson-Davis to open the extra session, the Seminoles outscored the Hoosiers 7-2 over the final 4:38 of the extra session. The Hoosiers were unable to score from the floor and managed on two free throws in the final 4:38 of overtime.

Florida State snapped Indiana's 5-0 record advantage in this series including the Hoosiers' 80-64 win in Bloomington in the 2019 ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The victory marked Florida State's fourth ACC/Big Ten Challenge win in the last five seasons, improving its record to 7-5 at home in the challenge.

Sophomore Balsa Koprivica dominated the first half, tying his career high of seven rebounds and later surpassing that with eight rebounds to finish the game. He scored 12 points and has scored a total of 25 points in the first two games of the season.

Redshirt junior RaiQuan Gray also had a powerful first half adding to his total of five steals within the first two games. Gray scored 12 points and totaled nine rebounds falling just one rebound shy of his first career double-double.

Florida State finished the half with a total of four turnovers and closed out the first 20 minutes with a 33-31 lead over Indiana.

Jackson-Davis scored 25 points and pulled down 17 rebounds as he continued to enjoy a stellar start to the season. Sophomore Armaan Franklin added nine points and eight rebounds for the Hoosiers.

Florida State's defense limited Indiana to just 4 of 15 made 3-point field goals including just two after halftime and in the overtime period.

The Seminoles fell short on rebounds, totaling 35 while the Hoosiers had 43 rebounds.

Senior M.J. Walker closed out the night with a total of 19 points, one rebound, and one assist. His 19-point scoring effort marked the second consecutive game he has led the Seminoles in scoring. Walker was 5 of 6 from the free-throw line and added two more 3-point field goals to his career total of 134.

Basketball Tops Florida, 81-73.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - No. 20 Florida State extended its winning streak to seven over Florida with an 83-71 victory over the Gators at the Donald L. Tucker Center. The Seminoles have defeated the Gators in each of the meetings between the two cross-state rivals every year since 2014. The victory was Seminole Head Coach Leonard Hamilton's school-record 11th win against Florida and his 74th career win over a nationally ranked team.

Freshman Scottie Barnes led the team with a career-high 17 points including several highlight reel dunks. Barnes also had five assists, two rebounds, and one steal as he finished as the Seminoles' leader in assists in his first career game against the Gators.

The Seminoles improved to 3-0 while Florida moved to 3-1 on the season.

The win allowed the Seminoles to keep a number of impressive home court winning streaks alive. The Seminoles won their 26th straight home game, their 41st consecutive non-conference home game, and the fourth consecutive home game against the Gators. The Seminoles are now 68-3 (.958 winning percentage) in their last 71 home games dating back to a 77-56 win over Notre Dame on February 25, 2017.

The Seminoles recovered from an early eight-point deficit as they closed the first half on a 42-24 run to take a 45-35 lead at the break. Both Barnes (13 first half points) and Anthony Polite (12 first half points) scored in double figures for Florida State in the first half. The Seminoles utilized 12 different players in the first half with eight scoring at least two points.

Florida was led by Scottie Lewis who totaled 19 points, four rebounds and three assists. Lewis scored 13 first half points but was limited by the Florida State defense to just six second half points on just two made field goals. Sophomore Tre Mann scored 17 points to go along with eight rebounds and seven assists. Mann led the Gators in both rebounds and assists this game, helping the Gators outrebound Florida State by a 34-33 margin.

Polite's 14 points surpassed his career high of 13 points which came against Virginia last season.

Senior M.J. Walker scored 17 points to mark the third consecutive game to begin the season in which he has scored at least 17 points. He was a perfect 12 of 12 from the free throw line and became just the fifth player in school history to make at least 12 of 12 free throws in a single game. The program record for free throw perfection in a single game is 16 of 16 by Bob Sura against South Florida on November 29, 1994.

Florida State made 23 of 30 free throws in Saturday's victory - both season highs during the first three games of the season. In addition to Walker's performance of 12 for 12, senior RayQuan Evans was a perfect three of three and Tanor Ngom was two of two from the line.

Sophomore Balsa Koprivica totaled six points as did senior Tanor Ngom as the Seminoles received strong contributions from the post players. Koprivica and Ngom combined to shoot five of nine from the field and two of three from the free throw line.

by Kennedy Knisley

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Freshman Scottie Barnes scored a team-high 16 points to lead five Seminoles in double figure scoring and Florida State won their ACC opener with a 74-61 win over Georgia Tech at the Donald L. It was Barnes who gave the Seminoles some breathing room with a dunk at the 9:15 mark of the second half after the Yellow Jackets had closed the score to 51-50 on the heels of a 15-0 scoring run that nearly gave them their first lead since early in the first half. Following Barnes' dunk, the Seminoles outscored Georgia Tech 21-11 to take the victory.

In the Seminoles' first ACC matchup of the season, they continue to extend some impressive home winning streaks. They are now 69-3 in the last 72 home games since the end of the 2015-16 season. Gray Leads Basketball to Fourth Straight Win Over Louisville.

by Kennedy Knisley

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - RaiQuan Gray led the Seminoles to their fourth consecutive win against the Cardinals with 17 points and eight rebounds as FSU took down Louisville on the road once again, 78-65, on Monday night at the KFC Yum! Center. The Seminoles move to 8-2 (4-1 ACC) on the season and the Cardinals are 9-3 (4-2 ACC).

Gray had an outstanding all-around performance, adding eight rebounds and two assists to go along with his 7-of-12 shooting night. Florida State was efficient from the floor and handled Louisville's pressure with ease all game, shooting 50 percent (31-of-62) overall. FSU was also strong from beyond the arc, going 9-of-21 (42.9 percent) while Louisville shot just 25 percent (4-of-16) from downtown.

FSU's impressive bench helped get the job done against the Cardinals, out-scoring the opposition 29-7. Malik Osborne (12 points) and Scottie Barnes (10 points) both scored in double figures off the bench. Osborne added a Sportscenter Top 10-worthy play with 7:50 left in the game when he posterized a Louisville defender with a thunderous right-handed jam, making it 67-50 FSU.

The Seminoles got off to a double-digit lead early in the game when a Barnes 3-point field goal made it 17-7 with 14:29 remaining in the first half. The lead would swell to 24 points (40-16) on an old-fashioned three-point play from Osborne with 4:38 left in the first half. FSU would take a 42-28 lead into halftime after shooting 53.3 percent overall as well as from beyond the arc (8-of-13).

Wyatt Wilkes got the start nod and made a big difference in just over 16 minutes of action, scoring 13 points and adding three rebounds and two steals. RayQuan Evans chipped in with 11 points.

Despite Louisville taking a 12-2 run into the break and cutting the deficit to 14, FSU would not let the game get too much closer. The Cardinals cut their deficit to eight points with 11:34 remaining on a made free throw, but that is as close as they would get for the remainder. Over the next five minutes FSU would use a 12-2 run punctuated by a layup from Gray to take a commanding 69-51 lead with 6:27 left.

M.J. Walker, entering the game as the team's leading scorer, proved how versatile his game really is vs. Louisville. He doubled his career high with 10 assists on the night, helping FSU assist on 19 of its 31 made field goals.

Carlik Jones led three other Cardinals in double-figure scoring by totaling 17 points. Louisville's Jae'Lyn Withers played a big role too, leading the team with nine rebounds and contributing 14 points.

In a five-day stretch, FSU has played some of its most impressive basketball. It routed NC State, 105-73, on Jan. 13. The Seminoles then defeated North Carolina, 82-75, on Saturday followed by Monday's quick turn-around win over the Cardinals.

Basketball Defeats Miami, 81-59
Wins Fifth Straight ACC Game

by Chuck Walsh

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Redshirt junior Malik Osborne scored 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds and junior RaiQuan Gray scored 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in leading No. 16 Florida State to a 81-59 victory over Miami at home. For both Osborne and Gray the double doubles were their first as Seminoles. The double double marked the third in Osborne's career after earning two during his freshman season at Rice.

The Seminoles, who were named as the National Team of the Week on Monday by ESPN, won their school record 22nd consecutive ACC home game - tied for the second longest streak in ACC history.

Florida State is now 10-2 (6-1 ACC) and the Hurricanes are 6-9 (2-8 ACC). The Seminoles have now defeated Miami six consecutive times, matching the Seminoles' longest winning streak against the Hurricanes in the history of the season.

"Obviously tonight was a game that was very important to us," said Seminole Head Coach Leonard Hamilton. "There were times we played exceptionally well and areas we still need to work on. I thought we adjusted there in the second half. We've got some guys in there that were able to get some steals, blocks and change the pace of the game. We had two guys get double doubles tonight, (RaiQuan) Gray and (Malik) Osborne. Tonight, we showed that when we're not shooting the ball well from the perimeter, we can still find a way to get the win."

Florida State held Miami to 20 field goals, 37 percent shooting from the field and nine 3-point shots. The Seminoles blocked four shots and had five steals. With four Seminoles pulling down four or more rebounds, Florida State outrebounded Miami by a 45-23 margin.

Osborne, senior M.J. Walker, and junior Sardaar Calhoun led the Seminoles in scoring with 11 points apiece. Walker has scored at least 10 points in 10 of Florida State's 12 games this season.

The Seminoles went into the locker room at half leading the Hurricanes by a 35-23 margin. Walker led with seven points. Florida State led for 38:57 of the game and by 24 points in the second half after Calhoun's two free throws.

Florida State has led four of its last five opponents by at least 20 points (Clemson by 38 points, NC State by 36 points, Louisville by 24 points, and Miami by 24 points) and is averaging an 18.6 point margin of victory in the last five games.

Calhoun is now averaging 9.7 points in his last two games and has made at least one 3-point field goal in nine of the first 14 games of his career. The junior is a perfect seven of seven from the free throw line for the Seminoles.

Osborne is averaging 10.3 points and is a perfect six of six in his last four games. Gray is averaging 11.8 points in his last four games, scoring in double figures for his fourth consecutive game.

Freshman Scottie Barnes and senior RayQuan Evans led the team in assists with four each. Evans has scored 58 points and is averaging 11.6 points per game as a starter. He is shooting .611 (22 of 36) from the field and averages 4.3 field goals made per game as a starter.

Redshirt junior Wyatt Wilkes knocked down two triples and contributed one steal. This marks his eighth steal in the first 12 games of the season, tying his single-season career-high from last season.

Miami's Isaiah Wong led the Hurricanes with 21 points and three assists. Kameron McGusty and Anthony Walker had 13 apiece. Nysier Brooks led in rebounds with five and both McGusty and Wong led with three assists.

"I think that Florida State is really an outstanding team," said Miami Head Coach Jim Larranaga. "They're very deepand they're very talented; we were not able to stay with them in the first half until the very closing minutes. Wegot within 12, we had been down 20 and I thought we came out pretty well in the second half. We got them withineight and then we had a couple of easy shots that didn't go down for us and they ran off 10 straight points. Itwent from eight to 18 and we were never able to recover from that."

The Seminoles led by 13 in the first half, lost the lead to the Tar Heels then rallied, from five down midway through the second half to win the game in the final seconds. Florida State is now 16-5 (11-4 in the ACC) and North Carolina is now 18-10 (10-6 in the ACC). The Seminoles won their first ACC Tournament championship in 2012.

by Kennedy Knisley, Sports Information Student Intern

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Redshirt junior Anthony Polite scored a career-high 22 points in leading Florida State, the No. 4 seed in the East Region, to a 71-53 win over No. 5 seed Colorado in the second round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. The victory sends the Seminoles to the Sweet 16 for the third consecutive season and for the seventh time in school history.

Florida State will face Michigan, the No. 1 seed East Region, in the Sweet 16 round of the tournament at 5 p.m. on Sunday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Polite pulled down five rebounds, totaled a game-high four assists, and contributed a game-high four steals. Polite tied his career-high four 3-point field goals including two in the first four minutes of the game to send the Seminoles to an early lead.

The game was a tale of two halves for the Seminoles who led 24-20 after the first 20 minutes. The Seminoles exploded with 47 second half points as they shot .625 percent from the field (15 of 24) and made 15 of 18 free throws.

Florida State scored the first four points of the second half to open up a 28-20 lead before the Buffaloes cut the deficit to one point at the 11:51 mark. Florida State responded with a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 42-35 with 9:29 left. After another triple by Polite and a free throw by senior M.J. Walker, the Seminoles were up 51-41, grabbing the first double digit lead of the game with 6:19 left to play.

The Seminoles pushed their lead to 19 points at 69-50 with just over two minutes remaining in the game.

Osborne joined Polite as the Seminoles' only two double figure scorers with 11 points on four of eight shooting from the field. He was also two of three from the line to maintain his career-high .838 mark from the free throw line this season.

RaiQuan Gray, a redshirt junior, was one point away from double figure scoring with nine points. Gray led the team in rebounds with six and contributed one block for the Seminoles. He has blocked 19 shots in 24 games this season.

Freshman Scottie Barnes led the Seminoles with five assists and three steals. He totaled six points and was a perfect two of two from the line.
