FSU gets down to business after Kennedy's Departure.
FSU begins the process of looking
for a men's basketball coach.
The day after Pat Kennedy's sudden departure to DePaul, the Florida State men's basketball program was getting down to the business of moving on.
But today the process of finding a new coach and helping players cope with the change must fit around the naming of a new women's basketball coach. Wisconsin assistant coach Sue Semrau will be introduced during a noon news conference.
About the time Semrau was traveling to Tallahassee on Thursday, Kennedy was speaking of DePaul's commitment to basketball in a Chicago news conference. FSU players such as point guard Kerry Thompson were trying to deal with Kennedy's departure as well as come to terms with the word "commitment."
"It's about loyalty," Thompson said. "I don't understand why he gets up and leaves us. We just won 20 games. A lot of guys are upset. I'm not really upset with him, but he could have gone (about it) a better way.
"This might be for the best and it might not."
Throughout Kennedy's past two seasons, there were reports that FSU athletics director Dave Hart never got used to Kennedy, and vice versa. Hart, who is big on image, was upset about how Kennedy handled certain situations, including his pursuit of a job at St. John's University. He suspended Kennedy for one game after he was ejected from a Clemson game two seasons ago.
Hart was publicly unhappy with Kennedy's ACC record. Kennedy was concerned about Hart's commitment when his contract wasn't extended this year after he directed the team to the championship game of the National Invitation Tournament. Hart doesn't believe his relationship with Kennedy was the catalyst that prompted Kennedy to take a pay cut, reportedly as much as $200,00 a year, to take the DePaul job.
"There was never a lot of reality to that," Hart said. "The relationship was fine. He said (he left) for an opportunity to accept a new challenge.
"Pat did a lot to move this basketball program forward during his 11 years and he should be commended and thanked for that."
In his news conference in Chicago on Thursday, Kennedy gave four reasons for taking the DePaul job: DePaul's academic reputation, its basketball tradition, its proximity to recruiting hotbeds and its commitment to basketball.
"It's no secret to the media that Florida State is a football university," Kennedy said. "We left the cupboard full there and I leave a program where I have lifetime of friends."
Hart met collectively with FSU players on Thursday morning. He met individually with others, including junior Randell Jackson. FSU players said Jackson was the most upset over Kennedy's departure.
Although they did not do so Thursday, FSU players plan to recommend a new coach to Hart, Thompson said. Marsh will be the name they gave him. Marsh, who completed his first year as a full-time coach at FSU, made an immediate impact as a coach who gets the players' attention on disciplinary and academic matters.
"It's just that it would be a very good choice," Thompson said of Marsh. "We're comfortable with him."
Hart said Thursday he has a short list of no more than six names. There is speculation that Hart, who has full authority to hire a coach without a search committee, is interested in hiring a black coach.
"We're going to hire the best coach we can at Florida State … no matter the race," Hart said. "I look at that short list; there are certainly some minority coaches on it."
The most prominently mentioned black coach is Tulane's Perry Clark. But according to Tulane spokesman, that school has not been contacted by Hart. Clark, 45, has put together a 146-97 record in eight years since taking over a program that had been disbanded because of a gambling scandal.
Rice's popular coach, Willis Wilson, is another black coach whom Hart may pursue, according to sources. Hart reportedly had Rice's women's basketball coach on his short list for the job Semrau will get.
Another coach that promises to be tied to the FSU job is Old Dominion's Jeff Capel. In addition to his reputation as a solid coach, there's something else that might interest FSU. His son Jason is an outstanding basketball prospect, and Ronald Curry, regarded as one of Virginia's best-ever football and basketball prospects, is a close family friend.
Capel said Thursday he hasn't talked to anybody from FSU. Other possible candidates include Mississippi coach Rob Evans and Tulsa's Steve Robinson.
Two coaches who have been previously mentioned - Virginia assistant coach Ricky Stokes and Oklahoma coach Kelvin Sampson - probably can be scratched from the list of prospective candidates because of commitments at their schools.
Although Hart has not revealed the names on his short list, Tallahassee Community College coach Mike Gillespie is not on it, according to sources.
"I would love to have the opportunity to meet with Mr. Hart and chat about the job," Gillespie said. "I think I'm a worthy candidate."
Those same FSU athletics department sources warn not to exclude a high profile coach such as Rick Majerus of Utah because of the appeal of coaching
in the ACC.
Robinson cruises into Florida State adventure.
It's been his dream
to find a place in the ACC. And with his dream fulfilled, the basketball coach is ready to make FSU his own.
Florida State has its basketball coach, a known disciplinarian.
Now, Steve Robinson gets the opportunity of a lifetime. After playing at Radford (Va.) University in the 1980s, he has made it to the Atlantic Coast Conference.
"I always dreamed of playing basketball in what I call the best conference in the country," Robinson said. "I had a lot of heroes that played in the ACC, and I remembered going out into the parks where we used to play on those makeshift goals.
"I was always one of those guys that was an ACC star. Reality set in when I became a bit older … but I still had dreams."
Robinson, 39, became the Seminoles' sixth coach in the program's 50-year history Tuesday, signing a five-year contract that will pay him around $500,000 a year. He resigned his position as Tulsa's head coach on Monday.
Robinson's base salary will be $110,000 a year. The contract includes a buyout clause that would require Robinson to pay for each year remaining should he decide to leave FSU before the deal expires.
His contract is comparable to that of Pat Kennedy, who made $490,000 last year. Kennedy resigned last month after 11 years at FSU to accept the coaching job at DePaul. He led the Seminoles to five NCAA Tournament appearances and a second-place finish in this year's National Invitation Tournament.
Robinson inherits a team that finished 20-12 overall and 6-10 in the ACC. The Seminoles have a solid nucleus with four returning starters - Randell Jackson, Corey Louis, LaMarr Greer and Kerry Thompson - to fit into Robinson's hustling, up-temp style of play.
FSU's players will be expected to be more disciplined on and off the court, something guard Geoff Brower welcomes.
"If there were two missing ingredients, 80 percent of it was discipline," Brower said.
Robinson issued a warning to players about his expectations off the court.
"I told the group this morning, nothing good happens when you get a phone call at 3 a.m.," he said. "I don't like those kind of phone calls because nobody's calling me to say, 'Have a good day.'"
Robinson developed his coaching skills during a seven-year stint as an assistant coach under Roy Williams at Kansas from 1988 to '95. Williams praised Robinson in a release distributed at the news conference.
Robinson is the school's first black head coach in any sport. He's the second black coach in ACC history, following Maryland's Bob Wade (1986-89).
FSU athletics director Dave Hart, who interviewed Washington coach Bob Bender, said hiring Robinson wasn't about setting a racial precedent at the university. Hart said he wanted to elevate FSU's basketball program among the nation's elite.
Robinson downplayed the significance of his being the first black coach at FSU. His immediate plans are to hire assistant coaches and begin recruiting next week.
"I am not Coach Kennedy," Robinson said, occasionally cracking one-liners during the announcement. "I'm not going to try to be. I think he accomplished a lot with this basketball program. But that's just the end of that era, the end of that chapter. We need to now look to open a new book."
Robinson wouldn't commit to keeping Donnie Marsh, a Kennedy assistant who was interviewed for the job and is popular among FSU players.
Robinson resigned from Tulsa despite signing a seven-year deal three months ago. That contract had no buyout clause. He led the Golden Hurricane to a 46-18 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances.
He had removed his name from consideration for the FSU job last week. But the lure of coaching in the ACC - and Hart's persistence - proved too much to pass up.
"Thank heavens Dave is persistent," Robinson said. "He called back and said, 'Are you sure?' When I kept looking at it, I was saying, 'You've got a chance to coach in
the ACC. Are you crazy to tell that guy no?'"

FSU to NCAA Tournament: We belong
The No. 12 seed Seminoles prove their point with an upset over No. 5 seed Texas Christian in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
By Steve Ellis
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Just in case the basketball world had missed the point, LaMarr Greer screamed it for all the doubters to hear.
"You don't want us here, but we're here. And you can't do anything about it.
"We belong."
Greer, in the final minute of the NCAA Midwest Regional, shouted so that Billy Tubbs and his stunned No. 5 seed Texas Christian bench could hear.
But really the message was for those who did not believe No. 12 seed FSU should have received an at-large bid. It was also for the Daily Oklahoman columnist who predicted a 30-point Texas Christian blowout and for the ESPN analyst who confused FSU with Wake Forest.
In a frenetic game that left players and 13,349 fans in the Myriad breathless, FSU silenced the critics with a resounding 96-87 win over TCU, the No. 1 scoring team in the country. Interestingly, it was FSU that scored 96 points - TCU's average.
It was the Seminoles' first win over a ranked opponent since beating Arizona in December. The Horned Frogs (27-6) are ranked 13th.
The Seminoles are headed to a Sunday 2:20 p.m. game against No. 13 seed Valparaiso (22-9), which stunned No. 4 seed Mississippi in the early action Friday. FSU (18-13) will play for a third Sweet 16 appearance in three NCAA trips since 1992.
"You start thinking about all that was said, being called Wake Forest by a television announcer," FSU coach Steve Robinson said. "Always reading something about TCU and very little said of us, I think our kids had something to prove.
"We believed we belonged in this tournament. We're a good basketball team."
Terrell Baker, more miffed than most by the critics, said: "It just made us more determined. We were confident. We figured victory."
FSU lost six of its previous games and another loss was certainly possible as long as TCU's sensational center, Lee Nailon, was in the game. He fouled out with 4:14 remaining, but not before scoring 32 points. His replacement, James Penny, missed two leaners in the final minute.
"Until Lee fouled out of the game we were going to win the game," Tubbs said.
"There's not a better team than us," Nailon said. "They just were today and that's when it counts. We could beat them. The biggest problem was mainly rebounding. They just got a lot of offensive boards and we didn't."
Five Seminoles scored in double figures. Randell Jackson produced 20 points, 16 in the second half. Backup forward Ron Hale added 17 points. FSU shot 53.8 percent from the floor, its best shooting in five weeks, and scored a season-high 96 points.
"It just kills you inside for critics to tell you you don't belong here," Jackson said. "They were supposed to win by 30 points and we sort of laughed at that. They are the WAC conference and we're the ACC. I don't think we'll get beat by 30 by anybody in that conference."
Three players overcame illness or injuries that could have kept them out of the game. Corey Louis had trouble breathing because of a chest cold, but breathed new life into FSU time after time with crucial tip-ins and rebounds. He scored a season-high 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
"We knew we were going to have to get up and down the court," Louis said. "We talked all week that we were going to have to get the ball down low and have to outrebound them.
"This win was huge for us. It feels so good, even better than Sunday (when the bid was announced). It doesn't stop here."
Point guard Kerry Thompson sustained bruise ribs when he chased a loose ball and collided in mid-air with Mike Jones with 3:45 remaining in the first half. He came back with a coast-to-coast layup to open the second half, breaking a 46-46 deadlock. He finished with a season-high 17 points and had nine assists to five turnovers.
FSU committed 19 turnovers, but that could be seen as excusable against TCU, which challenged FSU.
"No way I wasn't going to play," Thompson said. "I would have played with broken ribs. We saw a ton of defenses - trapped us, full-court pressure, man, zones. But we stayed under control."
Baker, playing with a slightly separated shoulder, had just two points. But the points, scored at the free-throw line with 1:06 left, gave FSU a six-point lead.
"We showed a lot of character and poise today," Robinson said. "I think our guys did a tremendous job of taking care of the basketball and getting the shots we were looking for."
Hobbled as it was in the backcourt, FSU showed it too could play Billyball. TCU's fast-paced tempo suited FSU's athleticism and speed of its big men perfectly.
FSU also did a solid job of shooting from the free-throw line, making 22 of 32 attempts, including key ones down the stretch. FSU struggled from 3-point range, going 4 of 11, but not like TCU - which made just 2 of 12.
FSU matched TCU at its own game, scoring 19 points off 16 TCU turnovers. TCU produced 21 points off 19 FSU turnovers.
"Today we got them in a running game and they are probably a better running team than we are," Tubbs said. "You could kind of see it coming when you looked at tape of them. I thought across their front line they're pretty good.
"They are a team that if they get hot like they were early in the year, they could do (something)."

Song's over
The Seminoles' trip to the NCAA Tournament ends with an 83-77 overtime loss to Valparaiso.
By Steve Ellis
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - They had suffered a separated shoulder, bruised ribs and a broken nose in their quest for a berth in the Sweet 16.
This was real pain.
It dropped Corey Louis to his knees and doubled over LaMarr Greer. It left both seniors motionless for what seemed an eternity as Valparaiso players danced nearby and kept the pumpkin out of sight for at least one more game.
Cinderella stuck out her leg and FSU fell hard, and right out of the NCAA Midwest Regional.
Two days after showing it belonged in this tournament, FSU was defeated 83-77 in overtime Sunday by a Valparaiso team that demonstrated that it also belonged.
"It definitely gives you a sour taste in your mouth," said FSU's Terrell Baker, playing with a separated shoulder, "It hurts but I don't think it puts a damper on the season."
Louis said simply: "This loss is the toughest."
FSU was playing for its third trip to the Sweet 16 this decade and first since 1993. It was trying to win two straight games for the first time since mid-January when it defeated Georgia Tech and Wake Forest.
Valparaiso (23-9) will be touted as the NCAA Tournament's luckiest team after Bryce Drew made a buzzer-beater against Mississippi in first-round action on Friday the 13th. The Crusaders won their 13th straight on Sunday to become the first 13th seed to make the Sweet 16 since 1988. They will play No. 8 seed Rhode Island, which knocked off No. 1 seed Kansas, Friday in St. Louis.
Sunday's win over 12th seed FSU had nothing to do with luck. It had everything to do with the Crusaders' Drew, and FSU's missed opportunities and missed offensive rebounds. The Crusaders scored eight crucial second-chance points to FSU's four. That is why FSU finished 18-14 - and a free-throw shy of the Sweet 16 - under first-year coach Steve Robinson.
With 31 seconds left in regulation, FSU's Kerry Thompson missed the front end of a one-and-one with the Seminoles ahead 75-74. A second later, Valpo's Bill Jenkins was fouled by Randell Jackson in pursuit of the rebound. Jenkins made one free throw to tie the score and set up one more chance for FSU with 24.8 seconds remaining.
During the timeout FSU drew up a play that called for either Louis or an outside shot by Baker. But an errant pass by Jackson helped send the play awry to force overtime.
"We had to kind of force it up and that put Kerry in a tough situation," Baker said.
The loss left more than just FSU players and fans wondering what could have been for the Seminoles.
"Florida State could have won and Steve Robinson could have been playing Roy Williams," said Rhode Island coach Jim Harrick, whose team defeated Williams' Kansas Jayhawks later Sunday.
Instead, both Kansas and FSU were sent out of the Midwest Regional. Reeling in pain.
