Derrick Carroll, 6-6, 215, F, Columbia, S.C. - Should make an immediate impact even on Florida State's veteran team...was considered one of the nation's top recruits as a high school senior...excellent outside shot and ability to anticipate make him a natural scorer...very strong with the basketball on the inside...fine rebounder with long arms that help him defend in the paint...excellent speed and quick hands provide him with good defensive basics...scorer with versatility to play either of the forward positions...ideal for FSU when running a three-guard offense...attended Maine Central Institute which did not cost him a year of eligibility...originally signed with South Carolina but never enrolled...a Parade All-American following his senior season at Eau Claire High School in Columbia, SC...averaged 25.5 points and 9.4 rebounds per game during the 1990-91 season...led Eau Claire to back-to-back 4A state championships as a junior and senior...scored 1,887 points during his high school career...Columbia area player of the year as a senior...first team all-state and all-regior selection as a junior and senior...born August 31, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York...roommate is freshman forward Maurice Robinson.

Jonathan Kerner, 6-11, 230, C, Atlanta, Ga. - One of only two true centers on the Seminoles' 1992-93 roster...possesses all the tools to be a fine center...excellent size and good athletic ability point to a bright future...lacks only experience at the collegiate level to be effective...excellent rebounder and shot blocker who comes to Florida State already well schooled in the fundamentals of the game...moves well in the lane and can score around the bucket...provides much needed depth to Seminole inside game...gives coaches the ability to pit center-on-center in practice for the first time in two seasons...should free Rodney Dobard to concentrate more on playing forward position...quick learner who brings fine academic qualifications to Tallahassee campus...joins Augusta native Chuck Graham and Thomasville's Charlie Ward to make up a trio of Peach State natives on the FSU roster...starred at St. Pius High in Atlanta for Coach Mark Kelly...averaged 15.4 points and 10.4 rebounds per game as a senior...ranked among the nation's top 100 high school seniors by Bob Gibbons...second team all-city selection in Atlanta...led St. Pius to the state high school semifinal game last year...born June 6, 1974 in Atlanta, GA...son of George and Willetta Kerner...father played basketball at Niagara University...mother owns antique shop in Atlanta...chose the Seminoles over Wake Forest...roommate is classmate Scott Shepherd.

Maurice Robinson, 6-6, 235, F, Little Rock, Ark. - Extremely strong inside player who can muscle in the paint with the big boys...aggressive with the ball on the baseline...uses strength to get shot off against taller defenders...coaches would like to see him develop his 10-12 foot jumper...excellent rebounder with ability to get the outlet pass to a guard quickly...style of play reminds many of Southern Mississippi's Clarence Weatherspoon...comfortable in either a fast break or half-court offense...disciplined player who should adjust quickly to Florida State's system...good defender who can move people around in the lane...powerful move to the bucket...averaged 18.5 points and 11.2 rebounds last year at Park View Magnet High in Little Rock...earned first team All-Arkansas honors after shooting 69 percent from the floor as a senior...also earned Little Rock All-City honors...Parkview High saw all five starters sign basketball scholarships to Division 1 schools: Dion Cross (Stanford), Kenneth Taylor (Murray State), Jamal Lindsey (Samford) and Derek Fisher (Samford)...Gibbon's All-Star Sports ranked Robinson as the 33rd best high school recruit and reported that the signing of five players from one school was unprecedented for a non-boarding school...according to school officials, Robinson is the most heavily recruited basketball player in the history of Parkview...as a junior, Robinson connected on a school record 71 percent of his field goals...born November 25, 1973 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas...father (Maurice) played football at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff...roommate is Derrick Carroll.

Scott Shepherd, 5-11, 180, G, Carmel, Ind. - One of the nation's top point guards as a high school senior last year...very quick player who excelled in talent-rich Indiana...heady athlete with ability to run an offense...excellent shooter and fine ball-handler...makes great decisions on the break...exceptional defender with ability to stay toe-to-toe with opponents point guard...coaches were impressed with his ability to dictate tempo of games even in summer camp setting...finalist for the famed "Mr. Basketball" title in Indiana...comes from one of the Hoosier State's best known basketball families...named one of the top 25 players in the nation by USA Today following his senior year...led Carmel High to the state playoffs all four years at school...Street and Smith listed him as one of nation's top 15 players...first team All-State as a junior and senior as named by Hoosier Basketball magazine...one of Indiana's top 100 career scorers...selected the top guard in Indiana for all four years at Carmel High by Hoop Scoop...averaged 22.8 points, 5.2 assists and 3.0 steals per game as a senior...scored in double figures in 76 consecutive games...named all-Hamilton County four years...Carmel High's most valuable player his last three years of high school...played in 92 varsity games (started 90 consecutive) and 366 of 368 varsity quarters...1,777 career points is third on Carmel High all-time list behind father Billy (2,465) and uncle David (2,226)...led AAU team to 17-and-under national championship as a junior earning tournament MVP honors in the process...also named MVP at the Radford Five-Star Camp...averaged 19.3 points and 5.3 assists per game over his career at Carmel High...born May 12, 1973 in Indianapolis, IN...father (Billy) played at Butler University and later for three years in the ABA (Memphis, San Diego, Virginia)...grandfather played basketball and football at Butler University and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals...uncle David played basketball at Ole Miss and uncle Steve played basketball at University of Indianapolis...chose the Seminoles over: North Carolina, Notre Dame, Wake Forest, Indiana, and Purdue...father and uncle David were "Mr. Basketball" in Indiana...roommate is Jonathan Kerner.

Florida State regains its midseason form just in time for the NCAA Tournament, sending Evansville home in the process.

ORLANDO, FL - Say hello to the old Florida State and goodbye to a quick Seminole exit from the NCAA Southeast Regional.

By relocating its shooting touch, reviving a comatose Rodney Dobard, and playing superb half-court defense, FSU eliminated 14th-seeded Evansville 82-70 on Thursday at Orlando Arena.

The third-seeded Seminoles (23-9) next face their old Metro Conference rival, Tulane, on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for a chance to repeat last season's Sweet 16 appearance. It was the third straight season FSU has won its NCAA opener.

"This looks like the club that moved through the (NCAA) Tournament a little last year," FSU coach Pat Kennedy said. "All the little things coming into this game that we were concerned about we got squared away. The guys got their confidence back, we made the 3s and played good defense."

Evansville, despite 11 rebounds and a game-high 20 points from a better-than-advertised 7-foot-1 center Sasha Hapmann, trailed by double figures most of the second half.

The Seminoles, losers of three of their last four games, shot 53.7 percent, their best shooting since Feb. 10. Among starters, only Bob Sura did not reach double figures in FSU's half-court, motion offense which placed a rare premium on unselfishness. Sura took just nine shots and had 7 points to go with seven rebounds.

Sam Cassell led FSU with 18 points and Doug Edwards, who despite getting double-team treatment, finished with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Dobard contributed 13 points and six blocked shots. Point guard Charlie Ward looked in mid-season form with 15 points, five assists and four steals.

FSU also hit a season-high 53.7 percent (7 of 13) from 3-point range after making just 12 of its last 64 attempts.

Evansville's strategy was to double team inside, pressure FSU's best shooters, and dare Ward to shoot from the outside backfired. Ward made three of four field-goal attempts and sparked FSU's decisive 18-point run in the first half.

"We had great ball movement," Kennedy said, "our best all year."

"But it wasn't just offense. We made defensive pressure the key to winning today. We were really getting after it. Another key was getting Rodney going."

It didn't begin as Dobard's game, as he left Hupmann unguarded three times to help defend on the perimeter. Hupmann scored each time before FSU tightened its defense.

By the time Dobard, as well as Byron Wells, figured there was no place like home, FSU was in an 18-18 fight with 10:05 left in the first half.

Then FSU scored 18 straight points over the next four minutes for a 36-18 lead that ultimately decided the game. Two steals, some great passing from Sura, 3-pointers from Ward and Derrick Carroll sparked the run.

"We did a lot of good things during that run," Ward said. "We passed the ball around well and played great defense like we did all game. We had a run of 13-14 wins earlier this season and if we do like we did then, we'll have a great opportunity to go a long way."

FSU blows into Sweet 16.
Seminoles think big after routing Tulane.

ORLANDO, FL - Florida State shelved its playground philosophy for passes with a purpose, and Sam Cassell shot his way to a higher ground.

That combination on offense, plus a relentless man-to-man defense overwhelmed Tulane 94-63 in the NCAA Southeast Regional Saturday.

Those elements also launched FSU to their second straight appearance in the Sweet 16 and this time as a team to respect, maybe even fear.

The No. 3 seed Seminoles (24-9) will play No. 7 Western Kentucky (26-5) Thursday in third-round action at Charlotte.

"We're right up there with the best," FSU forward Doug Edwards said. "It's going to take a great team to knock us out of the tournament."

"They have all the ingredients to make the Final Four," Tulane coach Perry Clark said.

Maybe even the ingredients to win it all when you consider:

Sam Cassell's perfect touch from 3-point range (7 of 7) that set an NCAA Tournament mark and ignited him to a game-high 31 points plus five assists and five rebounds.
Three other Seminoles made the most of FSU's new-found unselfishness in a motion offense. Guard Bob Sura had 16 points, while Edwards added 22 (plus 12 rebounds and five assists) and Rodney Dobard scored 13 points.
FSU had just nine turnovers against a team whose opponents averaged 20.8.
FSU's front line held Tulane's starting big men to just 26.2 percent (14 of 49) from the floor and team leader Matt Greene had just 16 points. FSU also created numerous fast-break opportunities off four blocks each from Edwards and Dobard.
The Seminoles entire defensive play, after a switch from gimmicks to straight mad defense, is in a two-game groove that prompted Pat Kennedy to remark: "We played as fine a defense as we've played in two games back-to-back. Defense has won these two games for us and that's what the kids believe in."
And finally, FSU's knack for big runs is back as FSU put together two - one of which doomed a poor-shooting Tulane team early in the second half.

"The way we were playing, sooner or later, we knew we were going to have some spurts," FSU assistant coach Kennedy Williamson said. "If we could put together a run with them not shooting well, we knew it would be difficult to come back down 10 or 20 points."

The Seminoles' first run was nearly too much. Despite making only four of 13 layups in the first half, Tulane was in it 31-29 after Anthony Reed's layup, of all things, with 2 minutes left.

Cassell answered with a 3-pointer, two layups, a steal and no talk. Just like that, FSU was ahead 39-29.

"That run set up the second half for us," Cassell said. "We came out and played aggressively. Doug and Rodney killed them inside and the shot was there for me."

"You can't allow a letdown against a team as quick and athletic as Florida State," Clark said. "We enabled them to get a 10-point lead, then Sura hitting that 3-pointer at the start of the second half put a dagger in us. We could never recover."

FSU never put on another run in the final five minutes, but didn't need to. The Seminoles were bound for the Sweet 16 and maybe more.

FSU Climbs into Elite 8.
Seminoles need OT to shake Western Kentucky.

CHARLOTTE, NC - Florida State, surviving a missed 3-pointer at the overtime buzzer and a dreadful showing from the foul line, ended Western Kentucky's postseason ride Thursday night with an 81-78 victory in the Southeast Regional semifinals.

Senior forward Doug Edwards scored 19 points to lead third-seeded Florida State into the regional finals for the first time since the Seminoles lost to the Bill Walton-led UCLA Bruins in the 1972 national championship game.

Florida State (25-9) will meet the winner of the Kentucky-Wake Forest game Saturday for a trip to New Orleans and the Final Four.

The Seminoles took a 71-69 lead four seconds into the overtime on a layup by Edwards, and used 3-pointers by Bob Sura and Sam Cassell to stretch their lead to 78-74 with 2:13 left.

Florida State, which made only 18 of 38 free throws, did not make a field goal the rest of the way.

The Seminoles opened the door for Western Kentucky when Rodney Dobard was called for traveling with 21.1 seconds left with Florida State up just 80-78.

But Western Kentucky freshman Michael Fraliex, trying to pass to teammate Darius Hall down low, threw the ball out of bounds with 7.5 seconds remaining.

After Florida State's Derrick Carroll made one free throw with 5.6 seconds left to make it 81-78, Western Kentucky got the ball into the frontcourt and stopped the clock with four seconds to go.

When play resumed, Fraliex appeared to step over the center line, but no call was made, and he passed the ball to Cypheus Bunton in the right corner. Bunton's high-arching shot bounced high off the rim twice before falling away.

Darnell Mee scored 21 points for the seventh-seeded Western Kentucky (26-6), which had its eight-game winning streak snapped.

As expected, both teams came out running in the first half. The game's first four minutes were played at a furious pace.

Dobard, whose fractured bone near his big toe was a big concern to FSU, came out fast. By the first timeout for TV, FSU had a 16-13 lead and Dobard had 7 points. He scored on a spectacular alley-oop pass from Sura for a dunk, then tipped in a Cassell miss and slammed home Edwards' miss.

Western Kentucky countered early with the steady play of guard Mark Bell. On consecutive possessions, the 5-foot-8 senior hit 3-pointers. On the second one, he was fouled by Edwards and converted the 4-point play.

FSU forged a 7-point lead midway through the first half when Sura scored on a layup off a pass from Cassell, then turned a Dobard block at one end into a breakaway, reverse dunk at the other.

When Western Kentucky went nearly four minutes without a score, FSU extended its lead to 26-15. To conclude that run, freshman Derrick Carroll came off the bench to sink an 18-footer and a 12-foot baseline turnaround.

Those were the first two baskets the Seminoles got from the perimeter. Otherwise, they were able to either get fast-break layups or penetrate Western Kentucky's man-to-man defense with the dribble.

Just when it appeared that FSU would put this game away early, Western Kentucky went on an 11-2 run to pull within 32-30. During that run, Cassell missed his first 3-point attempt of the NCAA Tournament after making two against Evansville and a tournament-record seven straight against Tulane.

The teams played basket for basket until Western Kentucky finally tied it at 40 on two free throws by Mee. And that's how the first half ended with nothing decided.

FSU and Western Kentucky arrived in Charlotte via considerably different routes.

The Seminoles were heavily favored to defeat 11th-seeded Tulane. As expected, FSU stormed through the Orlando bracket with a 12-point decision over Evansville and a 31-point win over Tulane.

Western Kentucky entered the Southeast Region as the seventh-seed, but were actually underdogs to 10th-seeded Memphis State in the opener, then to second-seeded Seton Hall in the second round. The Hilltoppers struggled past Memphis State by 3, then stunned Seton Hall by 4.

On the surface, it appeared that Western Kentucky was this NCAA Tournament's Cinderella story. But the Hilltoppers closed out the regular season with a No. 20 national ranking, just nine spots behind FSU.

"They are not a Cinderella team," FSU coach Pat Kennedy said prior to the game. "They had wins at New Orleans and at Louisville. They're deep and use a lot of schemes, more like a Cincinnati even than a Kentucky. We developed a great deal of respect for them over the last couple days (of studying) tapes."

Wildcats are too much for Seminoles, 106-81.
Florida State provides a strong challenge but is left behind by the tournament's hottest team.

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Road to the Final Four ended one stop short for Florida State as the Seminoles crashed into a big Blue wall Saturday.

A 106-81 dismantling by No. 1 seed Kentucky in the NCAA Southeast Regional final ended FSU's second-most successful season on a rather dubious historical note.

The margin of defeat was the second-worst in Pat Kennedy's seven years and came despite third-seed FSU (25-10) giving Kentucky all it wanted by halftime, 54-46.

"We took the season as far as we could and we finally hit the wall," FSU assistant coach Tom Carlson said.

It ended as just another day at the office for Kentucky, which has won its seven SEC and NCAA Tournament games by an average of 31 points and is 30-3 for the season.

A 20-6 run, in which FSU scored just one field goal in nine minutes to give Kentucky an 86-66 lead with 6:12 remaining, left FSU in a total wreck.

"We just didn't have any juice left," Carlson said. "We missed our jumpers and couldn't even hit layups. It was all gone."

Kentucky ultimately wore FSU down inside - even the well-rested point guard Charlie Ward was tugging at his shorts throughout the second half.

The Wildcats outrebounded FSU 51-25 (22-8 offensively) and received 22 points and 11 rebounds out of surprise starter, 6-foot-9 forward Jared Prickett who made the most of a mismatch with 6-foot-5 Bob Sura before 6-foot-8 Derrick Carroll helped out.

FSU also gave second chances to a team too good for such generosity. Kentucky scored 29 points on second chances to FSU's 13 and, by midway through the second half, was ahead of FSU 20-5 in that category.

All that explained how Kentucky dismantled FSU despite getting just 12 points out of team-leader and NBA lottery pick Jamal Mashburn. Travis Ford added 19 points, 12 on bombs from the 3-point line, as the Wildcats made 47.9 percent (11 of 23) of their 3-pont attempts.

In contrast, FSU shot just 41 percent from the floor. Sura led the Seminoles with 17 points. Sam Cassell and Rodney Dobard each scored 16 points and Doug Edwards added 15.

"We played just seven guys and they kept throwing guys at us," Edwards said. "We just wore out. They were getting a lot of second shots and that hurt us more than anything.

"We were told to lay off Prickett because he wasn't really one of their key guys. But he just kept crashing the board."

By the time Edwards left the game with five fouls and two choice words of profanity for one of the referees - FSU had seen enough.

"You've got to give it to them," Edwards said. "In the first half, I thought we could play with them. We had a great game plan, but the just had too much."

Kentucky was prepared for Ward, FSU's starting quarterback, to test their defense with deep throws. Instead, Cassell hit Bob Sura three straight times to give FSU a 6-6 tie less than two minutes into the game.

The Wildcats, after opening with a 34-8 run in its victory over Wake Forest in the regional semifinals, never had the luxury in the first half Saturday.

"Give a lot of credit to Florida State, that was the best anybody attacked our press in a long time," Kentucky coach Rick Pitino said. "(FSU's defense forced) us to have someone other than Jamal and Travis step up."

FSU continued to find ways to break Kentucky's press, and then through great defensive effort, FSU led 27-26.

Cassell's steal led to an easy layup by Sura, then Ward took his own steal in for the FSU lead with 9:25 left.

When Kentucky immediately called a timeout, FSU players rushed to the bench awash in confidence.

"The feeling was we 'can beat them, we can beat them,'" Cassell said.

Yet with Edwards already on the bench with three fouls and Prickett beginning to have success inside, the pending reality was hard to ignore.

"Kentucky has just too much talent for us to lose Edwards to fouls," Kennedy said.

It also hurt that FSU missed some opportunities that would have made it close at the half.

"We had chances to take the lead at the end of the first half, but did not make good choices," Kennedy said.

Cassell added: "We weathered the storm in the first half, but couldn't keep it up."

Kentucky was just too good.
