FSU wins battle, loses Ward.
The Seminoles open a big lead and hold off hard-charging Montana, but, in the process, lose point
guard Charlie Ward to a dislocated shoulder.
By Steve Ellis
BOISE, ID - Florida State survived a scare from Montana on Thursday and will see if it can survive without point guard Charlie Ward on Saturday.
Ward, his dislocated left shoulder in a sling, watched from the bench as the Seminoles made eight straight free throws to turn back Montana 78-68 in the NCAA Tournament West Regional.
FSU will play Georgetown in Saturday's second-round game at 4:35 p.m. The Hoyas advanced by beating South Florida 75-60 Thursday.
Ward, who says he won't play Saturday, first exited with 4:33 remaining in the first half. He played the final minute of the half but missed the last 18 minutes of the game after reinjuring his right shoulder.
The Seminoles put together a 15-4 run immediately following Ward's exit, opening a 54-31 lead with 13:47 left.
It nearly slipped away.
The Seminoles led 72-66 with a minute remaining when Doug Edwards hit four straight free throws to seal the victory.
Yet Sam Cassell, who made four straight at the line prior to Edwards' streak, was FSU's most important player. He had a game-high 23-points and ran the offense with Ward out of the game.
The junior guard made three of five from 3-point range after making just one of seven in FSU's last game, an Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament loss to North Carolina.
"Cassell and their trap, that's what got them going," said Montana head coach Blaine Taylor. "One thing that surprised me is that they shot the ball well from the 3.
"The other thing that surprised me was we play a pretty physical brand in the Big Sky (Conference) and I think our kids were shocked by how physical the traps were allowed to be."
The Seminoles forced nine turnovers and led 37-25 at halftime.
"At the beginning of the second half, Coach told us to keep pressure on them and make our defense create our offense," Cassell said. "We knew they would make a run, we just wanted to withstand them.
"We tried to make out traps even harder. We created some turnovers out of our trap and it created some easy baskets."
FSU coach Pat Kennedy agreed the trap made the difference.
"Even when they had their run, we felt we had it under control," Kennedy said. "I thought we had things in hand.
"Montana had only 25 points in the first half. They could not get into their half-court offense (because of our traps). Somebody made the comment coming into this tournament that our trap wasn't active. Our guys heard that."
Five Seminoles reached double figures - Cassell, Chuck Graham (13), Bobby Sura (14), Rodney Dobard (14) and Edwards (12).

Sweet, Sweet 16.
Minus its quarterback and down 11 points to Georgetown, Florida State battles its way into the NCAA Sweet
16.
By Steve Ellis
BOISE, ID – Stop Alonzo Mourning. Florida State coaches surmised, and you defeat Georgetown.
They were right.
The Seminoles limited the All-American center to just 14 points, and rallied from an 11-point deficit for a 78-68 victory over Georgetown in the NCAA West Regional.
FSU, playing without starting point guard Charlie Ward, has advanced to the NCAA’s Sweet 16 for the first time since 1972. The Seminoles will play Indiana, an 89-79 victor over Louisiana State on Thursday.
“It’s the biggest win we’ve had since I’ve been her,” FSU head coach Pat Kennedy said. “We said the next step is to get to the Sweet 16 and it’s great that we’ve done it this year. This is what I dreamed about when I came to FSU.”
The Seminoles, who trailed by at least 10 seven times, were down 59-49 when Chuck Graham’s 18-foot jumper ignited the Seminoles with 7:49 remaining. From there, FSU made its jumpers and free throws. The Seminoles got a big break when the 6-foot-10 Mourning fouled out with 2:05 remaining and his team down by 2.
The Seminoles sealed the victory at the line, making five of their last six attempts. Rodney Dobard, who made just 63 percent of his attempts this season, made two to put FSU ahead 75-68 with 24 seconds left.
A change in zones on defense and a charge by Sam Cassell and Doug Edwards on offense sparked FSU’s 29-9 run in the final 8:02.
Edwards fouled out with 43 seconds left, but FSU had clinched the victory.
“It was just awesome the way we came back,” said FSU assistant coach Tom Carlson. “The biggest thing that happened in the second half was the defensive change we made.
“Our first-half strategy (of playing Mourning with a diamond-and-one defense) worked, but we were getting too many fouls and our defense wasn’t creating the offense we needed. We weren’t scoring.”
FSU produced its second-lowest point total of the season in the first half, and trailed 32-23.
“After looking at what happened on offense, we went back to our three guards, and a 2-3 zone. We were able to use our speed again, and it created some transition baskets.”
FSU was led by Cassell’s 19 points on six-of-15 shooting, including 9 during FSU’s final run. Coaches praised Cassell for the way he handled FSU’s offense in Ward’s absence, turning the ball over just two times.
In addition to Cassell, FSU got 15 points and a season-high 16 rebounds from Edwards. Dobard added 12 points and eight rebounds. Chuck Graham had 10 points.
Georgetown was paced by Joey Brown’s 16 points. Irvin Church added 14.
But again, it was FSU’s defense of Mourning that was so key.
When Mourning fouled out with FSU ahead 66-64 and 2:08 remaining, the Seminoles gained a decisive advantage according to Georgetown coach John Thompson.
“We lose him and it creates a psychological disadvantage for us,” Thompson said.
The game and the crowd turned totally in FSU’s favor when Mourning fouled out.
The Seminoles’ plan to shadow Mourning all afternoon worked to near perfection, especially in the first half. He scored just 1 point before halftime, on a free throw with 1:08 remaining. Mourning, who had two fouls in the first half, grabbed no rebounds.
“Going in, we believed everything revolved around Alonzo Mourning,” Carlson said. “The idea was to always have two people on him.”
The Seminoles added a twist to double-teaming Mourning by often having small, quick guards fronting him. While the 6-3 Bob Sura kept in Mourning’s face – or rather chest – FSU’s taller players guarded the space between Mourning and the basket.
Mourning became more active in the second half when Dobard and Edwards got into foul trouble. Still only 8 of his 14 points came on field goals.
“Playing that defense on Mourning took us out of our game because we couldn’t trap much and get steals,” said Sura, who started in place of Graham. “We made that change, and played great at the end.”

Indiana foils FSU.
For the second straight season, the Indiana Hoosiers crush the Seminoles’ NCAA Tournament dreams.
ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Four stitches in the chin, 24 points and a fist in the air after nearly dunking the defender – Eric Anderson did it all Thursday night to put Indiana into the NCAA West Regional final with an 85-74 victory over Florida State.
Anderson, a soft-shooting, muscle-rippling center, didn’t start the game, but he sure finished it once he got in with Indiana trailing the speedy Seminoles, 9-2.
Indiana coach Bob Knight never touched his bullwhip when his Hoosiers fell behind. All he had to do was turn to the bench, send in Anderson and watch him drill the ball from every angle on the court to lead No. 5 Indiana (26-6) into a showdown Saturday against the winner of the late UCLA-New Mexico State game.
Anderson, who averaged 10.6 points per game this season, scored 17 of his season-high total points iin the next 14 minutes before coming out with a bloody chin after he slammed into the court face-first chasing a loose ball.
The No. 20 Seminoles (22-10) looked as if they were going to run Indiana out of The Pit in the opening minutes when Sam Cassell’s 3-pointer started a nine-point run that put them up by seven. Florida State was eager to avenge an 82-60 loss to Indiana in the second round of the tournament last year, but the Seminoles had no one who could follow Anderson to the outside and seemed disorganized against Indiana’s tight man-to-man defense.
FSU trailed just 40-38 at halftime on Byron Well’s 3-pointer with 2 seconds left. But plenty of damage had already been done to the Seminoles, who committed 14 fouls to Indiana’s seven.
Forward Rodney Dobard, who missed nine minutes in the first half, had three fouls as did center Andre Reid and guard Sam Cassell.
Indiana converted 11 of 16 attempts, but it was Anderson who was the force behind Indiana’s first-half success. The senior made 6 of 7 attempts to score 17 points.
Graham led FSU with 9 points while Doug Edwards added 8 points. FSU made 51 percent of its shots before halftime.
The Seminoles didn’t pick up any first half points from Charlie Ward, who appeared timid in his first appearance since partially dislocating his left shoulder last week.
