Seminoles Start Indoor Season Strong At UF Intercollegiate Meet.
Florida State senior Greg Bolden became the fastest 55 meter runner in the nation with his time of 6.14 in the finals.
GAINESVILLE, FL - The men's and women's track and field teams competed in The Swamp at the UF Intercollegiate Meet on Saturday, January 13. This is the first meet of the indoor season for the Seminoles and both teams were healthy and came out looking strong.
Last season, three Seminoles provisionally and one automatically qualified in their respective events at the UF Intercollegiates. This year five were provisional qualifiers and one automatic.
In the finals of the men's 55 m dash, the Seminoles dominated the top four spots. Leading the way was automatic qualifier Greg Bolden, followed by Walter Dix (6.19), Michael Ray Garvin (6.23), and Cedric Nabe (6.24) who all provisionally qualified. Bolden's winning time of 6.14 was not only a personal best for the senior from Morrow, GA but it also made him the fastest indoor 55m runner in the nation.
"Overall, I felt that this is the best position our men's team has been in this early," Coach Bob Braman said. "Usually after the holidays you have to get back and shake a lot of rust off. We really looked as good as we ever did in this early meet. I'm really pleased with that, they had a great meet."
Garvin, a sophomore from Upper Saddle River, NJ, ran the 200m with a time of 21.50, just shy of provisional qualifying standard. Junior thrower Matt Wernke had a personal best in the weight throw with a distance of 58'10.0".
The women's team had only one provisional qualifier and that was senior co-captain Alyce Williams in the triple jump with 41'8.5". Newcomer Chalencia Seay nabbed a personal best in the women's weight throw with a 54'1/25" throw.
"Both of our high hurdlers, Kamilah Salaam & Valerie Flournoy, ran lifetime bests and PR'd, so that's really good," Braman said. "Dana Massiah did a good job in the 200m, Alyce did a good job in the triple jump, and Chalencia's PR in the weight throw is great for her."
Flournoy and Salaam ran personal bests in the 55m hurdles with their times of 8.17 and 8.28, respectively, and Massiah finished the 200 meters in the third spot with her time of 24.93.
"I have to say good job all around," Braman said. "We're way ahead of where I thought we'd be so obviously they did their homework over the holidays and that's what all the coaches were concerned about. We didn't have to shake too much rust off so that's good."
Staying healthy is always the number one priority for Florida State as they look forward into the season. With the rust apparently dusted off, the Seminoles prepare for the Clemson Multi Meet on
January 26 and 27.

Seminole Track and Field Wrap Up Day One At New Balance Collegiate Invitational.
Florida State's Greg Bolden remains the fastest 60m runner in the nation with a clock of 6.62.
Feb. 2, 2007
Florida State comes out with three of the five fastest 60m men in the nation as the first day of competition at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational comes to end.
Senior Greg Bolden (Morrow, GA) matched his national leading time with a finish of 6.62 in the prelims of the 60m dash while sophomores Walter Dix (Coral Springs, FL) posts the third fastest time with 6.63 and Michael Ray Garvin (Upper Saddle River, NJ) the fifth spot with 6.66. All three advance to the finals tomorrow while senior Cedric Nabe (Geneva, Switzerland) moves onto the consolation finals with his time of 6.77.
In the 60m hurdles, junior Drew Brunson (Snellville, GA) qualified for the finals in eight seconds flat. On their way to the men's 400m finals are junior Ricardo Chambers (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) who ran the fastest prelim time with 46.91 while freshman Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, VA) finished ninth overall with his time of 47.66.
In the field events, senior Charlie Cotton (Gainesville, FL) matched his personal best of 16'0.75" to place second overall in the pole vault finals.
On the women's side it was a big day for the freshman. Tiara Swanagan (Orange Park, FL) started her collegiate career off strong as she finished first in the high jump with her height of 5'6.0". Allyn Laughlin (Ambridge, PA) placed second overall in the women's shot put with her throw of 46'11.75" and Valerie Flournoy (Gainesville, FL) advances to the finals of the 60m hurdles with her time of 8.66.
"Overall it was a big day," head Coach Bob Braman said. "We're excited about our 60m guys after day one. One, three and five in the country is huge and of course having Charles Clark with us helps. Michael Ray Garvin's time of 6.66 has never failed to make it to nationals so that virtually assures him a spot. On the women's side we're really excited that's some of our newcomers, Tiara, Allyn and Valerie, did so well."
"Ultimately that's what we come here for, to run these lead marks and get people qualified for nationals."
Tomorrow will be the debut of Tom Lancashire (Bolton, England) and Andrew Lemoncello (St. Andrews, Scotland) in the 3K as well as Barbara Parker (Norfolk, England) who will be running in the elite
women's mile. Also on the agenda will be the finals for the sprints and hurdles as well as the men's 4x400m showdown with LSU who are the defending national champions in the relay.
The Seminoles come out with two automatic qualifiers and a new men's 3,000m school record.
Feb. 3, 2007
NEW YORK, NY - Florida State track and field closes out the New Balance Invite on Saturday night with more provisional qualifiers and a few personal bests. Greg Bolden (Morrow, GA) holds onto his title of fastest 60m runner in the nation while Ricardo Chambers (Palm Beach County, FL) becomes the fastest 400m runner.
"The point of this meet for us was to continue that march to nationals," Coach Bob Braman said. "So we did a lot of that in the 60m on Friday by getting the three guys qualified for nationals. That was big."
In men's action, senior Greg Bolden (Morrow, GA) once again finished on top in the 60m finals with his new personal best time of 6.61. A false start kept Walter Dix (Coral Springs, FL) from finishing and a sudden case of the flu prevented Michael Ray Garvin (Upper Saddle River, NJ) from competing today, but they still remain the third and fifth fastest 60m runners with their provisional times from Friday. Senior Cedric Nabe (Geneva, Switzerland) was able to finish in the 60m with a time of 6.80 for seventh place.
Walter Dix also competed in the 200m finals where his time of 21.13 not only gave him a first place finish and a personal best but also automatically qualified him for nationals.
In the men's 400m, junior Ricardo Chambers (Palm Beach County, FL) provisionally qualified with his first place time of 46.23, also making him the fastest in the nation. Also running in the 400m finals was freshman Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, VA) who placed ninth with a 48.20 clock.
In the distance events, seniors Andrew Lemoncello (St. Andrew's, Scotland) and Tom Lancashire (Bolton, England) both set new school records in the 3,000m with their times of 8:00.09 and 8:00.95, respectively. Andrew finished second just behind Abraham Ng'eitch of Iona while Tom placed fifth. Also finishing in the top twenty was junior Mark Buckingham (Huddersfield, England) in sixteenth in 8:15.99.
On the women's side, junior Abi Wilshire (Saltford, England) won the collegiate women's 3,000m with her collegiate best mark of 9:42.47.
Senior Barbara Parker (Norfolk, England) ran against some of the best runners in the country to place second overall in the championship mile with her collegiate best time of 4:46.69.
Sophomore Tori Allen (Indianapolis, IN) won her division in the pole vault with a height of 12'1.50".
Also competing for the women in the weight throw were the freshman three-some of Caila Coleman (Tallahassee, FL), Chalencia Seay (Polk County, FL), and Allyn Laughlin (Ambridge, PA). Coleman threw for 53'0.25", Chalencia had a 48'8.75" throw and Allyn finished just shy with a distance of 48'7.25". Freshman Valerie Flournoy (Gainesville, FL) ran in the 60m hurdle finals and placed 15th with a clock of 8.69.
"We're starting to come together but there are still a lot of things that need to be done in the next four weeks," Braman said. "There are only four qualifying weeks left. Next week at Arkansas and at Washington for some of the distance guys and then at the conference meet, which is a hard meet to qualify at, and then of course there's the Last Chance Meet."
"We didn't focus too much on the team score because we had to pull some people out and we rested others. So it was like any other meet for us, we're just trying to get qualifiers and things like that."
"Overall I think we did a good job. I'm pleased with the trip and now we know what we've got to do to be ready for the conference meet."

FAYETTEVILLE, AR - Competition at the Tyson Invite comes to an end with the Seminoles taking care of what they came to do by qualifying two automatically and seven provisionally for nationals.

Finishing just behind Baylor, the men's 4x400m relay finished with an ACC leading time of 3:08.26 to provisionally qualify and set a new Florida State school record, which was 3:08.67 and originally set in 1984.
"We got a lot of things done today," head coach Bob Braman said. "That is what we came here to do, we wanted to get as many qualifiers as we could. It was a really good day for the women with Alyce in the triple jump and the 4x400m relay. For the men we got Walter qualified and now he and Ricardo are the fastest in the nation. We also got a chance to see how the other teams are stacking up for nationals and I think we are looking pretty good right now."
Footage from the Tyson Invitational will air on ESPN2 tomorrow, Sunday, February 11, at 1:00 PM EST. The next stop for the Seminoles will be the ACC Indoor Championship from February 22 - 24 held at
Clemson University.
Ricardo Chambers runs 46.05 in the 400m finals to automatically qualify and holds onto his title of fastest in the nation.
Feb. 9, 2007
FAYETTEVILLE, AR - Florida State finished out the first day of competition at the University of Arkansas Tyson Invitational with two of the top times in the ACC as well as one of the fastest men in the nation.
Senior Barbara Parker (Norfolk, England) finished second in the women's championship mile with a personal best time of 4:40.97, making her the fastest in the conference and sixth in the nation.
"Barbara ran in the best collegiate mile there is and just missed winning it," head coach Bob Braman said. "She ran the second fastest time at Florida State, just behind Natalie Hughes, and beat out all of the women she will race against at nationals. It was a great race for her."
In men's sprints action, junior Ricardo Chambers (Palm Beach County, FL) held onto his title as the fastest 400m man in the nation by clocking in at 46.05 in the finals. Senior Greg Bolden (Morrow, GA) also remains untouchable in the 60m after winning his heat in 6.68 and moving onto the finals on Saturday. Junior Walter Dix's (Coral Springs, FL) time of 6.82 moves him into the men's finals where he will make his move for an automatic bid.
"Walt used the 60m prelims as a warm-up for tonight's finals," Braman said. "I doubt any of the college guys he is competing against in the finals can beat him."
In the men's collegiate mile, junior Mark Buckingham (Huddersfield, England) posted the fastest time in the ACC with his third place time of 4:05.34.
Tallahassee native, senior Matt Hurley, finished strong in the men's pole vault with his fourth place height of 17'0.75", another step closer to his ticket to nationals.
"It was a big day for us," Braman said. "The big highlights are definitely Barbara, Mark, and Ricardo's performances. So I would say overall it was pretty good for day one, but we still have a lot to get done tomorrow. We're hoping to get the men's and women's 4x400 meter relays qualified, or at least close to it, and we are going to see what we can do with the distance medley relay without Tom Lancashire."
Lancashire and Andrew Lemoncello are among the few distance runners competing in the University of Washington Husky Classic on Saturday. The seniors will try for a qualifying time in the 3,000m and 5,000m, which will shape the future at nationals.
Along with the relays, Saturday's action will also see Dix and sophomore Michael Ray Garvin (Upper Saddle River, NJ) compete 200m with hopes of qualifying.
"What we are really concerned about this week is getting qualified for nationals," Braman said. "That is what we remain focused on going into Saturday."
Saturday's competition will begin at 10:00 AM Central and live results can be found at HogWired.com or by visiting flashresults.com and clicking on the Tyson Invitational. Portions of the meet will be
aired on ESPN2 on Sunday, Feb. 11 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. EST.

Matt Frith Competes In The Heptathlon On Day One Of ACC Indoor Track & Field Championship.
The junior from Jacksonville, FL completes the first day of the multi-event in ninth place.
Feb. 22, 2007
CLEMSON, SC - The first day of competition kicked off with the men's and women's multi-events on Thursday, Feb. 22 at the ACC Indoor Championship hosted by Clemson University. The lone Seminole to compete today was junior Matt Frith who competed in the first half of the men's heptathlon. Matt's events today were the 60m dash, long jump, shot put and high jump.
Frith ran a 7.40 in the 60m, long jumped 20'10.75", high jumped 5'8.75" and threw 40'7" in the shot put to set a new personal best.
"I feel considering what happened at the first multi-event I competed in at Clemson this season," Frith said. "This meet went really well. Because I am strong in the pole vault I will be in a good position to score for the team tomorrow."
At last year's indoor conference meet, Frith earned 4,917 points in the men's heptathlon to finish in seventh place and add two points to the Seminole's overall team score.
"It is important to start the day off on a high note when competing in multi-events," Frith said. "I am hoping to do that by running well in the 60m hurdles and that will roll into the pole vault and keep the overall momentum going right into the last event, the 1,000m run. In the 1,000m, my plan is to try and maintain my position and not allow anyone to overtake me."
Frith will compete in the second half of the heptathlon on Friday, Feb. 23 in the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m run. Tomorrow also begins the prelims and finals for the field and running events.
Keep checking Seminoles.com for results or visit TheACC.com for complete conference championship information.
Senior Andrew Lemoncello and the men's distance medley relay both set new ACC meet records.
Feb. 23, 2007
CLEMSON, SC - The Seminoles qualified for the finals in six events for the men and seven for the women on the second day of competition at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Clemson, S.C. After day two, the men and women are in third place with 27 points and 16.50 points, respectively.
Men's one mile run prelims
As the multi-events continued, the first running event of the day was the men's mile run with Florida State's Tom Lancashire (Bolton, England), Mark Buckingham (Huddersfield, England) and Chris
Nickinson (Pensacola, FL). Lancashire qualified for the finals as he ran the fastest preliminary time of the day with his mark of 4:11.45 while Buckingham also qualified with a 4:12.39 clock.
Women's one mile run prelims

for Florida State.
Men's 60m dash prelims heat up
The men's 60m dash prelims were as exciting as ever as four Seminoles qualified for the finals on Saturday. Senior Greg Bolden (Morrow, GA), junior Walter Dix (Coral Springs, FL), and sophomore
Michael Ray Garvin (Upper Saddle River, NJ) all qualified for the finals tomorrow with their times of 6.61, 6.67, and 6.72, respectively. For the eighth spot in the finals, senior Cedric Nabe (Geneva,
Switzerland) and Clemson's Corey Brown each ran 6.77 and will compete head-to-head in a two section 60m final tomorrow afternoon.
Women's short sprints, hurdles and 800m prelims
Senior Alyce Williams (Palm Coast, FL) ran 7.55 to qualify for the finals of the women's 60m dash, senior Kamilah Salaam (Wilmington, DE) qualified for the finals in the 60m hurdles with her time of
8.58, and senior Dana Massiah's (Trinidad and Tobago) 55.60 mark earned her a spot in the 400m finals on Saturday. In the 800m, senior Barbara Parker (Norfolk, England) qualified for tomorrow in
2:10.88.
Men's 60m hurdle prelims and high jump finals
Junior Drew Brunson (Snellville, GA) qualified for the finals of the 60m hurdles in 7.90 while sophomore Javier Garcia-Tunon's (Miami, FL) time of 8.18 just missed the cutoff mark.
Brunson scored four points for the men as he jumped a lifetime best 6'9.75" in the high jump finals to place fifth.
Men's 200m dash prelims
Walter Dix didn't let Clemson's Jacoby Ford get by as he ran the fastest time today in the 200m prelim with 21.41. Also qualifying for Florida State were Michael Ray-Garvin, Greg Bolden, and Pat
Robinson.
Men's 400m dash prelims
Junior Ricardo Chambers (Palm Beach Gardens, FL), the fastest 400m runner in the nation, took it easy on the competition today as he qualified in third for the finals with a 48.55 clock. Junior Hubert
Mitchell (West Palm Beach, FL) and sophomore Tywayne Buchanan (Greater Portmore, Jamaica) also qualified in 48.78 and 48.97, respectively.
Men's 5,000m and distance medley relay break ACC records
Senior Andrew Lemoncello (St. Andrew's, Scotland) set a new ACC meet record in the 5,000m finals by crossing the line in 14:00.96 and scoring 10 points for Florida State. Also scoring some of the
first points for the Seminoles was senior Sean Burris (Rockledge, FL) whose time of 14:39.22 was good for seventh place and two team points.
In the men's distance medley relay, Mark Buckingham, junior Elliott Wood (Sydney, Australia), red-shirt freshman Stephen Wilson (Brandon, FL), and Tom Lancashire posted the new ACC record with their clock of 9:50.41, earning 10 team points to give the Seminole men 27 points at the end of day two.
Women score first points
Alyce Williams placed third overall in the women's long jump with her 19'9.75" jump to earn six points for the women and junior Debbie Huss' (Wyomissing, PA) 16:57.18 clock in the 5,000m finals added
a point for the Seminoles.
Sophomore Tori Allen (Indianapolis, IN) pole vaulted 12'5.5" to tie for fourth and earn 4.50 points for the women.
"We had an overall great day," Head coach Bob Braman said. "We didn't get all the points, but the ones we missed were very minor."
"On the men's side the high jumpers did a great job and we qualified really well in most of the sprint events. Andrew Lemoncello and the men's distance medley relay breaking the conference record were huge tonight."
"For the women, Alyce coming in third in the triple jump was huge, the women's distance medley and Tori Allen placed fourth and that is big as well. What we did well on the women's side is we outdid the incoming season projection and that puts us in a pretty good position and we have a real chance for the top five which separates the elite from everyone else."
The final day of the conference championship begins tomorrow, Feb. 24 and kicks off with the final of the men's mile run. Florida State will also compete in the men's and women's 3,000m finals as well
as the 4x400m relays.
The women's 4x400m relay finished first to propel the women into a fourth place finish.

jumped 39'8.75" to place seventh overall.
Men's and Women's 4x400m Relay Finals
A race which started out strong for the men of Florida State quickly went sour when a bump in the third leg of the relay caused sophomore Javier Garcia-Tunon (Miami, FL) to drop the baton and lose the
lead that sophomores Willie Gaines (West Palm Beach, FL) and Tywayne Buchanan fought hard to maintain. Freshman Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, VA) ran the anchor leg and finished the Seminoles with a
time of 3:25.89.

Florida State Track And Field Enter The Fight For First NCAA Indoor Title.
The men's squad enters the NCAA Indoor National Championships ranked second in the USTFCCCA and TrackWire polls.
March 8, 2007
FAYETTEVILLE, AR - The Seminoles make their second trip to the Randal Tyson Track and Field Center in Fayetteville, Ark. this season, but this time the men are there to fight for their first NCAA Indoor Championship title.
The men's team enters the championship on the heels of two successful meets, the ACC Championship and the Iowa State Last Chance meet. The Seminoles defended their indoor conference title for the fifth consecutive year while the women's team finished strong in fourth overall.
At Iowa State, freshman Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) punched his ticket after running 20.92 in the 200m dash. Senior Cedric Nabe (Geneva, Switzerland/St. Joseph Lycee) earned a spot in the 60m and sophomore Michael Ray Garvin (Upper Saddle River, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) will pull double-duty in the 60m and 200m.
For the men, ten Seminoles, including Clark, Garvin and Nabe, head to Arkansas. Juniors Ricardo Chambers (Palm Beach County, FL/Dwyer) and Walter Dix (Coral Springs, FL/Coral Spring) make their third consecutive appearances at the national meet. Chambers will compete in the 400m as well as run the third leg of the 4x400m relay with teammates Clark, Hubert Mitchell (West Palm Beach, FL/Palm Beach Lakes), and Tywayne Buchanan (Greater Portmore, Jamaica/Wolmer's Boys' School). Dix will double-up in the 60m and 200m dashes along with Garvin.
Rounding out the travel roster for the men are senior distance runners Tom Lancashire (Bolton, England/Turton) in the 3,000m and Andrew Lemoncello (St. Andrew's, Scotland/Stirling) in the 5,000m. This is the third trip to indoor nationals for Lancashire and the first for Lemoncello.
The women's squad sends two seniors to the indoor championship, Barbara Parker (Norfolk, England/Loughborough) and Alyce Williams (Palm Coast, FL/George Mason) Parker will compete in the mile run while Williams looks to take the gold in the triple jump. Florida State's men are ranked No. 2 on both the TrackWire 25 and the USTFCCCA polls. TrackWire predicts the Seminoles will score 43 team points, just three behind projected champion Wisconsin.
"The men are in a good position to win this thing," head Coach Bob Braman said. "We just have to focus and go in there and do the absolute best we can to put the points on the board."
The NCAA Indoor Championships begin Friday, March 9 at 10:00 a.m. EST with the men's heptathlon 60m dash. The event will be broadcast on Tuesday, March 13 at 2:30 p.m. EST on ESPN2. For complete

Junior Walter Dix runs 20.32 in the 200m finals, the fastest time in the world.
March 10, 2007
FAYETTEVILLE, AR - Florida State's men's squad ends the first day of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in a four-way tie for second with Auburn, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Those four teams collected 15 points while Wisconsin leads the way with 20.
Ricardo Chambers (Palm Beach Gardens, FL/Dwyer) tightened the grip on his title of fastest 400m runner in the nation when he finished in 45.64 in heat two of the prelims on Friday evening. That mark set a new personal best for the junior who makes his third consecutive appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend.
Chambers will compete in section two of the finals on Saturday against Erison Hurtault of Columbia, Michael Bingham of Wake Forest, and Aaron Buzard of Minnesota.
In the men's 60m dash prelims, junior Walter Dix (Coral Springs, FL/Coral Springs) ran 6.61 in heat one to beat out ACC champion Jacoby Ford of Clemson. Dix's time is just shy of his personal best but is his fastest this season. Making it to the finals with Dix on Saturday will be senior Greg Bolden (Morrow, GA/Albany State) who ran 6.64 in heat two of the prelims. Senior Cedric Nabe (Geneva, Switzerland/ St. Joseph Lycee) finished in 6.75 and sophomore Michael Ray Garvin (Upper Saddle River, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) ran 6.78 to finish seventh and eighth in heat two, respectively.
For the women of Florida State, senior Barbara Parker (Norfolk, England/Loughborough) competed in heat two of the women's mile run and finished second in 4:42.10. Parker led for all eight laps, but was overtaken just steps before the line by Duke's Shannon Rowbury. The Blue Devil took home the ACC title just weeks earlier and clocked in tonight at 4:34.94. Both ladies will face-off in the finals tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. EST.
Following the women's mile, things started to heat up as the men's 200m dash prelims got underway. Dix, battling in his second event, gave his best performance of the season, running the world's second fastest time of 20.40 in heat two. Joining Walter in the finals is freshman Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) who ran a personal best 20.83 in heat five to qualify. Garvin was slated to compete in the 200m, but would scratch after pulling up with a hamstring injury in the 60m prelims earlier in the night.
The Randal Tyson Track and Field Center has seen some amazing times in the men's 200 meter lately. Just last weekend, a former University of Arkansas athlete who turned pro, Wallace Spearmon, competed unattached in the Arkansas Last Chance meet, finishing the 200m in 20.39 and setting the nation's new leading time.
But all of that was about to change. When heat two of the 200m finals took off, Dix defended his indoor title by running a tremendous 20.32, claiming the world leading time this year, and earning his fifth indoor All-American honor (2005 & 2006: 60m, 200m; 2007: 200m). This time last year in Fayetteville, Ark., Dix ran his personal best 20.27 to take his first indoor championship.
"I've started to catch the reputation as the guy who shows up for the big meets," Dix said. "I don't think that's a big thing though. I always want the big meets and I always thrive on the big meets."
"I ran some great times today, but I wish I could have put a little more pressure on the 200 [meters], I was going for the record. But there is always next year and I have the outdoor season coming up."
"Our team may have had a couple of slip-ups tonight," Dix said. "But we are a team of champions so tomorrow we are going to come out here and focus on winning every event and take home the big win."
Clark, who finished fourth in the 200m in and incredible 20.75, set a new personal best and earned his first indoor All-American honor. The Virginia Beach native is one of three freshmen to run in the finals and was the highest scorer in that group.
At the end of the night, the Seminoles found themselves in a four-way fight for second, trailing predicted champion Wisconsin. But with a good handful of opportunities to score on Saturday, don't count Florida State out of the fight just yet.
"After tonight Walter Dix is looking really good," head coach Bob Braman said. "If he starts the 60 meter tomorrow like he started the 200m he will be first or second for sure. Wisconsin has Demi Omole and we have Walt, so it is really a four-point swing between us and them."
"Our freshman Charles Clark had a hurt foot and he still got fourth in the 200 meter and that was huge for us. We had hoped that Andrew Lemoncello would have scored at least three points for us and he
did not have his best race. On top of that, we lost Michael Ray Garvin with an injury so we lost about four or five points there, but Clark scored higher than we had anticipated so we may be a couple
down but we are still in a good position."
In the last event of the night, the 4x400m relay ran a season best 3:07.35 to finish fifth.
March 10, 2007
FAYETTEVILLE, AR - It all came down to the last event for Florida State's men's team who trailed meet favorite Wisconsin by nine points going into the 4x400m relay. Unfortunately, this was not the year for the Seminoles' first indoor NCAA title as they finished second, one spot ahead of last season, with 35 points.
The final day of championship competition for Florida State started with Barbara Parker (Norfolk, England/Loughborough) in the women's mile run finals. The senior hung back in the middle of the pack for the first half of the race before making her move for the first position on lap six. Unable to hold her spot, Duke's ACC Champion, Shannon Rowbury, took control of the race for the final two laps. Parker finished strong in fourth place with a clock of 4:45.97 behind Rowbury (4:42.17), UCLA's Allie Bohannon in second (4:43.36) and Nicole Edwards of Michigan who placed third in 4:44.89.
Junior Ricardo Chambers (Palm Beach Gardens, FL/Dwyer) took home the gold in the 400m dash, finishing in 45.65 and earning the first points of the night for the men. This is the first indoor NCAA title for Chambers.
Next up for Florida State, the men's 60m finals with junior Walter Dix (Coral Springs, FL/Coral Springs) and senior Greg Bolden (Morrow, GA/Albany State). Bolden ran a 6.63 to place fourth and contribute five points to the men's team. Dix, who ran 6.61 in the prelims last night, encountered some trouble out of the blocks tonight and was unable to recover causing last year's NCAA indoor champion to finish last in 7.09, earning one team point.
Clemson's Travis Padgett, Wisconsin's Demi Omole, another Clemson Tiger Jacoby Ford, and Ibrahim Kabia of Minnesota round out the top five.
Senior Alyce Williams (Palm Coast, FL/George Mason) was the second and final woman to compete for the Seminoles, finishing seventh with a 42'10.25" leap and scoring two team points. The women will finish in a four-way tie for 30 with Virginia Tech, Texas State, and Louisiana Tech, all with seven points.
In the men's 3,000m run finals, senior Tom Lancashire (Bolton, England/Turton) was unable to keep up with last evening's 5,000m champion, Wisconsin's Chris Solinksy, and Lopez Lomong of Northern Arizona. Lomong took the title after running 7:49.74, followed by Solinksy in 7:51.69. Lancashire was the last to finish in 11th with a clock of 8:10.85.
Following the men's 3,000m, Florida State found themselves in third with 31 points, trailing Texas in second with 34 and leader, and predicted team champion, Wisconsin with 40.
With Wisconsin's competition completed for the night, the chance for the Seminoles to win came down to the 1,600m relay. The original lineup of sophomore Hubert Mitchell (West Palm Beach, FL/Palm Beach Lakes), junior Tywayne Buchanan (Greater Portmore, Jamaica/Wolmer's Boys' School), Ricardo Chambers, and freshman Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) was switched-up a bit, adding 200m champion Walter Dix in place of Mitchell. In 2005, then freshman Dix was a last minute replacement 4x400m at the ACC Indoor Championships and the Seminoles would go on to win the title in 3:14.07.
"We decided to replace Hubert [Mitchell] with Walter [Dix] because Hubert was a little banged up," head coach Bob Braman said. "Plus Walt felt bad and after his stumble in the 60m earlier and he wanted to run the four by four. It was sprints coach Ken Harnden's decision to make the adjustment and it was a smart move since we led the event up until the final heat."
Leading off in heat one of three of the finals was Buchanan, followed by Dix, Chambers and Clark in the anchor leg. The Seminoles' time of 3:07.35 unfortunately was not fast enough to win, but was a season-best and placed them fifth with three team points.
At the end of the men's relay, the Badgers of Wisconsin came out victorious with 40 points and Florida State placed a spot higher than last year, in second, with 35. Rounding out the top five were Texas with 34, Stanford with 28, and Auburn with 25 team points.
"We lost by five points," Braman said. "It was just not meant to be. But we have always said we are a much better outdoor team, we train for the outdoor championships and we are more suited for the outdoor events."
"To be honest, it doesn't feel really good to finish second because you come here to win. I feel we could have scored 40 points, but we just did not hit on every event we entered."

Florida State Track And Field Successful At Walt Disney World Meet.
Sixteen men and women regionally qualified over the three-day event.
March 24, 2007
LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL - As the sun sets on the Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex, Florida State's men's and women's track and field teams head back to Tallahassee with almost two dozen regional qualifying marks and a handful of personal bests.
The final day of the Disney Track and Field Invitational added 13 more regional qualifying marks to the 11 the Seminoles picked up on Thursday and Friday. In total, 16 individuals in 12 events and three relays regionally qualified this weekend.
"I am pleasantly surprised at the intensity our athletes brought to this meet," Head coach Bob Braman said. "It wasn't the best collegiate competition, but the weather conditions were good and I am really pleased with how we performed."
For the women's squad, the Williams sisters each add another qualifying mark in the triple jump for Alyce and the 400m dash for Alycia. Alyce jumped 41'10.5"/12.76m to finish first and Alycia ran 23.70 to place fifth. The Palm Coast, Fla. natives have each regionally qualified in two events so far this season.
Senior Kamilah Salaam (Wilmington, DE/Penn State) just made the regional qualifying mark after running 13.92 to finish fourth in the 100m hurdle finals.
In the women's shot put, senior Sarah Reed (Port Charlotte, FL/Illinois) and freshman Allyn Laughlin (Ambridge, PA/Center Area) each earned regional qualifying marks. Laughlin's throw of 50'4.50"/15.35m was good enough for first place while Reed was the runner-up with her throw of 50 feet even.
The women's 4x100m relay team and the 4x400m relay team were both the meet champions finishing in 45.51 and 3:37.25, respectively. Running on the 4x100m was Kamilah Salaam, Alyce Williams, freshman Cinnamon Johnson (Tallahassee, FL/Florida High), and Alycia Williams. On the 4x400m was sophomore Hshkeni Richemond (Suffern, NY/Suffern), senior India Pettus (Cleveland, OH/Trinity), junior Kandia Batchelor (Hillsborough, FL/Hillsborough), and Alycia Williams.
The Seminole men had an equally successful day with five individuals and the 4x100m relay regionally qualifying.
In the men's 200m finals, freshman Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) and senior Greg Bolden (Morrow, GA/Albany State) each regionally qualified. Clark ran a personal best and national leading time of 20.57 to take home the gold while Bolden was the runner-up finishing in a personal best 20.88.
Senior John Fallone (Rochester, NY/Virginia Tech) grabbed his second regional qualifying mark in the shot put with a first-place and season best throw of 57'11.25"/17.66m. Fallone previously threw 56'8.50" at the FSU Snowbird Invitational on March 3.
Junior Drew Brunson (Snellville, GA/Tennessee) and sophomore Javier Garcia-Tunon (Miami, FL/Belen Jesuit) each posted regionally qualifying marks in the 110m hurdle finals. Brunson finished second in 13.94 and Garcia-Tunon placed fifth in 14.25.
The men's 4x100m relay took home the gold and grabbed a regional qualifying mark after running the national-leading time of 39.55. Running in the race was Bolden, junior Walter Dix (Coral Springs, FL/Coral Springs), Clark, and senior Cedric Nabe (Geneva, Switzerland/Lycee St. Joseph).
"As a team, I think we did a great job this weekend," Braman said. "We are fortunate that we are very healthy right now, which is not always the case coming out of indoor track. We had a lot of lifetime bests and a lot of regional marks. I didn't think that coming to a meet like this that they would really go for it like they did, so I am really impressed with how intense the men and women competed."
Day two of competition ends with ten Seminoles earning regional qualifying marks in seven events.
March 24, 2007
LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL - Florida State's men's and women's track and field teams finish off the second day of competition at the Disney Track and Field Invitational on Friday, March 23 with ten regional qualifiers. Those marks bring the total to 11 qualifiers to come from the meet so far.

Florida State Finishes On A High Note At FSU Relays.
Senior Matt Hurley regionally qualifies in the pole vault with personal best height.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The FSU Relays was just another successful meet for Florida State's men's and women's track and field teams. Regional qualifying marks and personal bests were earned on Saturday, March 31, the final day of competition.
From the men's team, senior pole vaulter Matt Hurley (Tallahassee, FL/Chiles) set a new personal record of 17'2.75" to win the event. That height is eight inches higher then his previous personal best and is makes Hurley a regional qualifier.
"It is big for anyone to get a regional mark at this point of the training phase we are going through," head coach Bob Braman said. "Matt Hurley did phenomenal in the pole vault. To regionally qualify and earn a personal best is just huge."
Also improving his performance today was sophomore Javier Garcia-Tunon (Miami, FL/Belen Jesuit) who ran a regional qualifying time of 52.23 in the 400 meter hurdles, bettering his time of 52.32 at the Disney Track and Field Invitational last weekend.
In the 4x400 meter relay, juniors Hubert Mitchell (West Palm Beach, FL/Palm beach lakes) and Ricardo Chambers (Palm Beach Gardens, FL/Dwyer), sophomore Tywayne Buchanan (Greater Portmore, Jamaica/Wolmer's Boys' School), and freshman standout Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) finished the race in first with a regional qualifying time of 3:09.74.
In women's action, senior thrower Sarah Reed (Port Charlotte, FL/Illinois) bettered her regional qualifying mark in the shot put and recorded a new personal best throw of 51 feet even. Reed had already met the regional standard at the FSU Snowbird Invitational on March 2.
Senior Alyce Williams (Palm Coast, FL/George Mason) improved on her regional time of 11.71 in the 100 meter dash today after she finished in 11.69 just behind former Seminole Cynthia Niako.
"We had a good weekend and accomplished what we wanted to," Braman said. "I think we had quite a few athletes looking ahead to the Texas Relays next weekend because it is the elite meet of the regular season for us."
"The relays this weekend was overall a great meet, it ran very smoothly. Something new to come out of it is that we have formed a high school coaches' committee to promote, organize, and execute the high school side of the FSU Relays in the future. That way they can run the high school portion in the way they feel is best. This is an exciting development and the local coaches are really looking forward to being a part of it. Right now, FSU Relays is a good meet and it can be a great meet and that is what we are focused on now."
In other Florida State track and field action, out in California at the Stanford Invitational, junior Debbie Huss (Wyomissing, PA/Vanderbilt) ran an impressive 33:56.38 in the 10,000 meter run to finish third overall. This is first time she has run the 10K and that time is an NCAA provisional mark.
"Debbie's time of 33:56.38 has never failed to make it to nationals so that is a huge breakthrough for her in her debut 10K race," Braman said. "Also performing well in the 10K was Laura Bowerman who ran 35:24.08 which is her second best time ever."
For the men out at Stanford, sophomore Javier Cruz (Miami, FL/Belen Jesuit) ran 29:56.46 to finish fifth in his heat of the men's 10,000 meter run. Finishing just behind him was newcomer and fellow Miami native Steeve Gabart in seventh place with a time of 30:08.56.
"Javier and Steeve ran very strong out in California," Braman said. "They ran some top conference times in the 10K. So at this point the Stanford meet has gone really well for both our men and women."

Seminoles Sweep Up Regional Marks At Texas Relays.
The men's 4x100 meter relay ran the nation's fastest time so far this season at the Texas Relays.
April 6, 2007
GAINESVILLE, FL & AUSTIN, TX - The Florida State track and field teams are stretched out across the nation this weekend, competing at the Texas Relays in Austin and the Florida Relays in Gainesville. After three days of competition in Texas, six individuals and two relay teams have met regional marks for the Seminoles.
The unstoppable 4x100 meter relay team of senior Greg Bolden (Morrow, GA/Albany State), junior Walter Dix (Coral Springs, FL/Coral Springs), sophomore Michael Ray Garvin (Upper Saddle River, NJ/Don Bosco Prep), and freshman Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, VA) ran a national-leading 39.24 in the prelims, improving on their regional qualifying time of 39.55 which was set at the Disney Track and Field Invite on March 24.
Dix, Bolden and Garvin were the top three finishers in the 100 meter dash prelims, each posting regional marks. Dix recorded an incredible national-leading time of 10.11 in his first 100 meter race this season. In second was Bolden who ran 10.30 and in third was Garvin, making his outdoor debut, finishing in 10.35.
"We had a very good couple of days so far in Texas," associate head coach Harlis Meaders said. "We had three out of four men advance to the finals in the 100 meters and the men's 4x100 relay had an excellent performance today and will compete in the finals on Saturday."
Another notable performance was junior Drew Brunson (Snellville, GA/Tennessee) in the men's 110 meter hurdle prelims. Brunson ran a regional qualifying and season-best 13.86 to finish second overall in the prelims.
Senior Matt Hurley (Tallahassee, FL/Chiles) had a good day on Thursday as he reached 17-feet 0.75-inches in section B of the men's pole vault.
"For the final day, we are looking forward to the women's 4x400 meter relay," Meaders said. "We also have the finals in the men's 100 meter dash and 4x100 meter relay as well as the men's 4x400 and 4x200."
At the Florida Relays on Friday three on the women's side ran lifetime bests. In the 400 meter hurdles, Gainesville native sophomore Shannon Stuckman ran a lifetime best 1:01.41 and just missed the regional mark. In the 400 meters freshman Kayann Chambers (Pompano Beach, FL/Pompano Beach) ran her best race in 55.43 and junior Keyla Smith (Daytona Beach, FL/Mainland) tied her lifetime best of 2:13.85 in the 800 meters.
On the men's side, senior Kenny Jesensky (Orlando, FL/Coastal Carolina) missed regionally qualifying in the 800 meters by one second after finishing seventh in 1:51.40.
"Shannon and Kenny both did a great job today and just missed those regional marks," Braman said. "Our team had a pretty good day in Gainesville today. We had a lot of athletes pretty much punch their ticket to the conference championships and we are really pleased with their performances."
Saturday is the final day for both meets with competition kicking off at 10:00 a.m. EST in Gainesville and at 11:00 a.m. EST in Texas. Complete results from Texas can be found at www.TexasSports.com
and for Florida you can log onto www.HalfMileTiming.com.
The inclement weather cut short Saturday's competition and prevented some events from being contested.
April 7, 2007
GAINESVILLE, FL & AUSTIN, TX - The weather in the final day of the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays was not a typical spring day as freezing temperatures and constant rain interrupted many events, including the finals of the men's 100-meter dash, at the Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium in Austin, TX.
While the men's 100-meter finals did not take place due to the weather, sprints coach Ken Harnden chose to not take any chances with his athletes' health and they did not compete in the relays today.
The only member of the top-ranked Seminole men's squads to compete on Saturday was John Fallone (Rochester, NY/Virginia Tech) in the shot put. The senior, who is already regionally qualified, threw 16.05m/52'8" to place fifth in the A-section.
On the women's side, the 4x200 meter relay and the triple jump were the only events Florida State competed in. The 4x200m relay finished fifth in 1:40.88 and was run by seniors Kamilah Salaam (Wilmington,DE/Penn State), Alyce Williams and Alycia Williams (Palm Coast, FL/George Mason), and freshman Cinnamon Johnson (Tallahassee, FL/Florida). Alyce was also the runner-up in the women's triple jump with her 12.43m/40'9.50" leap.
Over in Gainesville at the Pepsi Florida Relays, the weather was much more ideal for outdoor track and field. Junior Travis Dane (Naples, FL/Barron Collier) threw a personal record 53.59m/175'10" in the hammer throw and finished sixth.
This weekend overall was preparation for the ACC Championships in two weeks in College Park, Maryland. Florida State will host its final home meet, the Seminole Invitational, the weekend before the
conference meet on Saturday, April 14.

Seminoles Round Up Personal Records At Final Home Meet.
The Seminole Invitational produced over a dozen personal bests and regional qualifying marks.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The last home meet of the 2007 outdoor track and field season was one of the most successful for Florida State. Battling hot and humid temperatures paired with strong winds and a period of rain, the Seminoles were able to tally over a dozen personal and collegiate bests as well as regional qualifying marks.
Nine on the women's squad had their best performances on Saturday. Staring off in the women's hammer throw, Sarah Reed threw a personal best 176'2" and finished first in the event. The senior from Port Charlotte, Fla. also threw a PR in the shot put, 51'5.75", also a regional mark and good for first. Also in the shot put, freshman Allyn Laughlin threw a regional qualifying and collegiate best 50'10" for a second-place finish.
Rounding out the bests in the field events was another freshman, Gainesville, Fla. native Tiara Swanagan, whose 41'2.50" leap in the triple jump set a new collegiate best. The freshman was three-time high school state champion in the triple jump and her 42'8.75" distance is still the high school state record.
In the women's sprints, seniors Dana Massiah and India Pettus each had personal best and regional qualifying times in the 400 meter dash. Massiah ran 53.66 for first place and Pettus was the runner-up in 54.55. Freshman Keyla Smith dropped down from the 800 meters to run a personal best 54.92 and just miss regionally qualifying in the 400 meters.
For the women's distance events, junior Debbie Huss' first-pace time of 9:41.62 and senior Jessica Crate's third-place 9:52.01 in the 3,000 meters set new personal records for both.
Barbara Parker had a prosperous day in the 1500 meters. The senior won the race and finished with a personal best and regionally qualifying 4:18.86 clock.
For the men's sprints, senior Ronald Wright had a strong showing after coming off an injury. The Baltimore, MD native posted a personal best 21.08 in the 200 meter dash which was also a regional mark.
Freshman Stephen Wilson shaved over three seconds off his 800 meter time this season to regionally qualify by one one-hundredth of a second (1:50.39) and place first in the event.
In the men's field events, sophomore transfer Bryan Howard improved his best in the javelin by four feet with a regional qualifying 207'3" throw. Freshman Sean Conrecode and sophomore Tommy Beltz also had collegiate best throws of 172'7" and 150'2", respectively.
Newcomer to the team, Travis Whitfield, had an outstanding day in the hammer and discus throws. The freshman from Jay, Fla. threw a personal best 184'2" in the hammer, also a regional mark, and his 139'5" throw in the discus was also a PR.
Rounding out the regional qualifiers on the men's squad was seniors Matt Hurley in the pole vault with a height of 16'6.75" and John Fallone with a 55'9.25" throw in the shot put.
"We got a lot done today," head coach Bob Braman said. "One of the bright spots was Ronald Wright coming off an injury and performing so well in both the 100 and 200 meters. I feel he is two good starts away from being a potential national scorer."
"The outcome from this low-key meet was a little unexpected, much like the Disney meet last month. But I am really pleased with everything and both the men and women did a really good job today."

Seminole Men Win ACC Outdoor Track And Field Championships.
The men's 4x100 meter relay broke the ACC and Florida State school records.
COLLEGE PARK, MD - After three long days of tough competition, the men of Florida State take home their third straight Atlantic Coast Conference outdoor track title with 166.50 points. The men have won five of the last six outdoor titles. In the women's race, the Seminoles finished strong in third with 101 points behind champions Virginia Tech and runners-up Miami.
"We have now won nine of the last ten indoor and outdoor men's ACC titles in the past five years," head coach Bob Braman said. "So this was a big win for us today. I am really excited with the performances from the men's team, especially the non-scholarship athletes who really stepped-up to score big points."
"In the seven years I have been here, four as head coach," Braman said. "This is the best women's team we have had. We did a good job this week and we had a lot of depth. Unfortunately we couldn't get past Virginia Tech and Miami, but our ladies did a great job and fought hard."
First up on the track, the men's 4x100 meter relay tore-up the track with an awesome 38.78 first-place finish, a great start to the day for the Seminoles. Greg Bolden, Walter Dix, Michael Ray Garvin, and Charles Clark destroyed the Florida State and ACC records as they defended their title as the fastest 400 meter relay team in the nation.
The next event on the track was the 1,500 meter run featuring Susan Kuijken and Audrey Hand running for the women and the 2006 ACC Champion and current record holder for the men, Tom Lancashire. Kuijken finished fifth in 4:29.56 scoring four points while Hand's 4:40.55 time was good for 11-place.
Lancashire defended his ACC title with an impressive 3:44.08 finish, just seconds off his ACC record of 3:42.13 which he set on April 22 last year at Wake Forest.
In the men's 100 meter hurdles, junior Drew Brunson just missed his first ACC title finishing second in 13.63. The junior transfer from Tennessee shattered his personal best and posted the second fastest time in the nation.
Finishing third was another Seminole, sophomore Javier Garcia-Tunon in 13.88, a new personal record for the Miami, Florida native.
The women's 400 meter finals was exciting for Florida State as the Noles dominated the track with five ladies, Alycia Williams, Dana Massiah, Kandia Batchelor, Hshkeni Richemond, and India Pettus.
Williams was the first to finish for FSU in third with a time of 53.33 followed by Massiah (54.07) and Batchelor (54.45) in fourth and fifth, respectively. Rounding out the scoring was Richemond in seventh with a new personal best 54.62 and Pettus finished eighth in 55.20. The women contribute 18 points from the 400 meters.
The men of Florida State dominated the 400 with a first and third place finisher. Junior Ricardo Chambers ran his fastest time this season of 46-flat and defended his ACC title for the third consecutive year. Sophomore Tywayne Buchanan improved from his fourth-place finish last season to take home the bronze in 47.38, his second-fastest time this year.
The men were able to secure 14.50 points in the 100 meter dash which began with a false-start by Jacoby Ford of Clemson. Seminole senior Greg Bolden kept the Tigers from sweeping the race and finished second in 10.30. Fellow senior Cedric Nabe was one one-hundredth shy of third place, finishing in 10.54.
In the men's 400 meter hurdles, once again two Seminoles competed, junior Elliott Wood and Garcia-Tunon. Wood had an impressive third-place finish with his season-best 51.44 time. Garcia-Tunon also ran a best time this year, 51.62, good for fifth and four team points.
Moving over to the field events for the women, the Seminoles scored 27 combined points in the shot put and triple jump. Sarah Reed, who finished third at last year's outdoor conference meet, improved with a second-place finish on Saturday with a personal best 53-foot throw.
"Sarah performed great today in the shot put," Braman said. "If she can repeat her 53-foot throw at nationals she could become an All-American and look to score some points."
Freshman Allyn Laughlin also added points in the shot, throwing 49'10.50" to finish sixth.
In the triple jump, Florida State had two women on the awards podium with ACC Champion Alyce Williams and bronze medal winner Tiara Swanagan. Williams' leap of 43'0.50" is her season-best and sets a new Kehoe Track record. Swanagan jumped 41'7.75" which is also a new season-best for the freshman.
The next highlight of day three came with the men's 200 meter finals featuring Dix and Clark battling it out against Clemson's Travis Padgett and Ford. Dix once again defended his title with an amazing 20.19 finish, his fastest time this season as well as the fastest time in the nation. The ACC meet was the debut 200 meter race for the junior from Coral Springs, Florida and with his time sets a new ACC record and beats the regional mark by one second.
Clark, the freshman superman from Virginia, looked strong in his first outdoor conference meet as he took the silver to beat-out Clemson's Padgett in a season-best 20.57.
Moving over to the men's field events, senior Matt Hurley was the lone event champion from Florida State, winning the pole vault with height of 17'2.75", matching his previous regional mark this season.
"Matt Hurley did a great job today with his win," Braman said. "Hurley is a fifth-year senior and former walk-on who beat two All-Americans today, so that is really big for him."
The final event of the meet was the men's and women's 4x400 meter relays. The women's relay team of juniors Keyla Smith and Kandia Batchelor and seniors Dana Massiah and Alycia Williams fought to the end and claimed the title as well as set a new ACC record of 3:32.11.
The men's relay team of sophomores Willie Gaines, Tywayne Buchanan, and Garcia-Tunon along with junior Andrew Krumins finished fourth with a time of 3:12.32.
"We had some great individual performances at this meet which will set us up for nationals in June," Braman said. "Things we expected to happen did like Walter Dix in the 200 meters and Tom Lancashire in the 1,500 meters, and then performances from athletes like Charles Clark are beginning to become consistent from meet to meet."
"A few breakthroughs were the men's 4x100 relay breaking the school and ACC records and then the women's 4x400 relay broke the ACC record at the end of the day. I am also really pleased with Drew Brunson's performance in the 100 hurdles today. He is now in the top five in the country and we always talk about looking for new points and we are looking for guys like him and Clark to deliver."

Walter Dix Shatters Collegiate Record At NCAA East Region Championships.
The junior's time of 19.69 in the 200m finals broke the collegiate, Florida State and regional records.
GAINESVILLE, FL - The spectators at the NCAA East Region Championships witnessed history being made as Florida State's Walter Dix (Coral Springs, FL) smashed the collegiate record in the men's 200m after running 19.69. (The original record of 19.75 was set by Joe DeLoach of Houston nearly 20 years ago.)
"It was a good day," Dix said. "God blessed me out there. I didn't expect to run that fast and I didn't think I was going as fast as I was, but when no one came up to me I knew I would go at least under 20."
The finals showcased three Seminoles including Dix, sophomore Michael Ray Garvin (Upper Saddle River, NJ) and freshman Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, VA) grabbing first, second and fourth, respectively. Clark ran a collegiate best 20.56 while Garvin matched his regional qualifying time of 20.70.
Dix, who led the entire race, came in wanting to break the record and knew he would have to really push himself to do so.
"I knew I was going to have to push myself," Dix said. "I have wanted this all season and I just ran it like I always do; I ran my race tonight."
Men's sprints coach Ken Harnden knows that Walter Dix is something special.
"It's unbelievable," Harnden said. "He knew it was there and I felt like I knew it was there, but when you see it's just a whole different ballgame. It's amazing to see the entire field so far behind, Charles Clark got second and he's not even in the [photo finish]."
Earlier in the day Walter played a part in breaking another school record in the 4x100m relay. The Seminoles entered the race ranked No. 1 in the nation (38.78) with a top prelim time of 39.30. Senior Greg Bolden (Morrow, GA) led the relay in lane five and had a smooth hand-off to Dix followed by Garvin and in the anchor leg was Clark who crossed the line in a new national leading time of 38.71. That time is also a new school and NCAA East Region meet record.
Following the 4x100 was the 100m once again packed with three in the garnet and gold. Dix, Bolden and Garvin ran side-by-side throughout the race and finished in first, second and third, respectively.
Dix ran a career-best 10.05 to match current national leader Travis Padgett of Clemson and set a new Florida State school record. Bolden clocked in at 10.30 while Garvin nabbed another personal best of the weekend in 10.32. All three will advance to the nationals.
The excitement remained high in the 400m finals as junior and national leader Ricardo Chambers (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) took his third consecutive NCAA East Region 400m title in 45.17.
Men's & Women's 1,500m Finals
Senior Tom Lancashire (Bolton, England) grabbed the fifth spot last season in the 1,500m finals, but was unable to hold on in the last 100 meters and slipped to sixth with a time of 3:43.29.
Susan Kuijken (Nijmejor, Netherlands) had a nice day in the women's 1,500m finals. This is only the third race this season for the sophomore who ran a personal best 4:21.77 Saturday, good for the runner-up position and an automatic bid to nationals.
Men's & Women's 3,000m Steeplechase
Two Seminoles qualified for the national meet in the men's 3,000m steeplechase; senior Andrew Lemoncello (St. Andrew's, Scotland) and junior Luke Gunn (Forest Gate, England). Lemoncello ran the
fastest time of the night in 8:39.02 while Gunn came back from an injury to post the third best time of the night with his 8:44.92 clock.
Senior Sean Burris (Rockledge, FL) finished in the No. 23 spot with a 9:09.25 mark and junior Mark Buckingham (Huddersfield, England) placed 27th in 9:16.20.
In the women's race, senior Barbara Parker (Norfolk, England) broke the NCAA East Region record and garnered a new collegiate best with her second-place time of 9:53.23 and will advance to the national meet for the second year in a row.
Also competing, but not advancing, for the women's side was sophomore Lydia Willemse (Forest, Ontario) who clocked in at 10:32.42 for 13th.

Day One Of NCAA Championships A Success For Florida State.
The men advance in all events while the women move on in the 3,000m steeplechase.
June 6, 2007
SACRAMENTO, CA - The first day of action was packed for Florida State at the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif. In front of a crowd of 6,506, the men advanced all athletes in the 100m, 400m, 4x100m relay, and 3,000m steeplechase, while the women moved on in the steeplechase.
In the 4x100m semifinal, the three top-ranked teams in the country posted the fastest qualifying times. The national leading Seminole team of Greg Bolden, Walter Dix, Michael Ray Garvin, and Charles Clark ran 39.53, the third-best time of the day, behind Louisiana State and Tennessee.
Less than two hours later was the first round of the men's 100m dash featuring Dix, Garvin and Bolden from FSU. All three advanced to the semifinals.
In the 100m semifinals the top four from each heat plus the next fastest time advance to the finals. Bolden and Garvin ran in heat one with Bolden automatically advancing with his fourth-place finish time of 10.22. Dix won his heat in 10.13 while Garvin nabbed the ninth spot with his time of 10.24.
"It was a very relaxed race," Dix said. "It was a good win; made it a lot easier to get through the round."
The 100m finals will be Friday night and Dix feels confident going into the race this year.
"My confidence is there," Dix said. "Right now everything is clicking, it's there. We'll just have to wait and see.
"[Winning the 100m and 200m] is something I have been working on for the last three years. It's a big goal of mine; I want the records, I want the wins."
Also competing in a first round was junior Ricardo Chambers in the 400m. Chambers won his heat in 46.55 and advances to the semifinals on Friday.
"We did what we had to do today," head coach Bob Braman said. "We got the men's 4x100 through and our three guys in the 100m. Now we need to get [Andrew Lemoncello] and [Luke Gunn] through in the steeplechase tonight."
Lemoncello and Gunn did just that. Both Seminoles will compete in the finals of the 3,000m steeplechase after qualifying in 8:40.91 and 8:42.60, respectively.
Finally it was the women's turn in the 3,000m steeplechase with senior Barbara Parker representing Florida State. Parker finished second in heat one with a mark of 9:57.71 and will advance to the finals on Friday evening.
Also on the women's side was senior Alycia Williams in the first round of the 400m. Williams finished fourth in her heat in 52.74, but will not advance to the next round.
The excitement builds Thursday with Florida State's first event being the first round of the men's 200m at 3:30pm PST. Seminoles.com will post complete results as soon as they are available and live
results can be found at FlashResults.com.
The sophomore advances to the finals after running fastest qualifying time of 4:15.68.
June 8, 2007
SACRAMENTO, CA - It was a day of many ups and a few downs for Florida State at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Sacramento State. The men saw two runners advance to the finals of the 200 meters, while the women advanced to the finals in the 4x400m relay and 1,500m.
All three Seminoles advanced to the semifinals of the 200m on Thursday afternoon. The 2006 National Champion in the 200m, Walter Dix (Coral Springs, Fla.), and Michael Ray Garvin (Upper Saddle River, NJ) move on from heat two after running 20.91 and 20.97, respectively. Freshman, and indoor 200m scorer, Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, Va.) ran 20.85 to qualify in heat three.
The semifinal of the 200m took to the track a few hours later, with Dix and Garvin in the first heat and Clark in heat two. In this round, the top four finishers from each heat plus the next best time advances to the finals on Saturday.
Dix, who ran the 200m collegiate record of 19.69 at the regional meet in May, won his heat in 20.48 and will move on to the finals. In the same heat, Garvin crossed the line in the fifth-spot but missed qualifying with his time of 20.81. Clark ran the fastest qualifying time of the day, 20.38, to win his heat.
"The 200 was a good race," head coach Bob Braman said. "It was disappointing to not get Michael Ray through, but Charles running the fastest qualifying time more than made up for that.
"Now we're focused on scoring at least 30 points between the 100 and 200 meters. I feel good about our guys in the 100, I feel good about the 4x100 relay and I feel good about Ricardo [Chambers] in the 400. I also feel good about Andrew Lemoncello in the steeplechase and if Luke Gunn can add anything, it'll be a huge bonus."
The women had their turn on the track in the 1,500m semifinals featuring sophomore Susan Kuijken (Nijmejor, Netherlands). Kuijken ran a strong race and not only won her heat but also broke the Florida State school record with her clock of 4:15.68.
"Susan was unbelievable," Braman said. "She ran a two-second personal record. It was a prelim and I told her to ease up. She had no idea how fast she ran, she asked me what her time was and she was pretty shocked. The pace was solid and she ran smart and stayed out of trouble. I'm really, really pleased with her; it was a great effort."
The final track event for the women was the semifinal round of the 4x400m relay. The winners of the four heats plus the next four best times advance to the finals.
The Seminole team of Keyla Smith (Daytona Beach, Fla.), India Pettus (Cleveland, Oh.), Kandia Batchelor (Tampa, Fla.), and Alycia Williams (Palm Coast, Fla.) ran in heat two of four against Louisiana State, Arizona State, Western Michigan, and Oklahoma.
The team ran 3:32.55, the seventh-fastest time of the night, earning an at-large spot for the finals on Saturday afternoon.
The only field event on Thursday was the women's shot put prelims with senior Sarah Reed (Punta Gorda, Fla.) representing the garnet and gold. Reed threw 47'2.50" (14.39m) to place 27th, but will not advance to the finals.
The final event of the evening was the women's 10,000m finals featuring junior Debbie Huss (Wyomissing, Pa.) running solo for the Seminoles. Huss, who earned a provisional qualifying mark of 33:56.38 at the Stanford Invitational, ran 33:41.52 to finish 26th.
Competition resumes for Florida State on Friday with the 4x100m finals at 4:30pm PST. The men look to score the first points as they challenge Tennessee and LSU for the gold. CSTV will broadcast the
meet from 5:30pm to 8:30pm PST and live results can be found by following the link posted at Seminoles.com.
The race to the championship is close for Florida State who ends the day in first place.
June 8, 2007
SACRAMENTO, CA - The first points started to roll in for Florida State on day three of the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif. The men's 4x100m and 100m finals brought 25 team points and two national titles for the Seminoles. Overall, the garnet and gold racked-up 34 points to end the day in first.
The men got off to a great start with the finals of the 4x100m featuring the national-leading team of Greg Bolden (Morrow, Ga.), Walter Dix (Coral Springs, Fla.), Michael Ray Garvin (Upper Saddle River, NJ), and Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, Va.).
In a too close for comfort race, the Seminoles came out on top posting a new national-best time of 38.60, beating out Louisiana State by 0.25 seconds.
"I'll take you from the beginning," anchor Clark said. "I saw Greg Bolden get out pretty good and I saw Walter Dix get the baton and you could say it was a wrap from then on. Michael Ray did his thing on the curves and kept me in a good position. All I had to do was bring it home.
"[I had] a nice, comfortable position; didn't have to worry so much. Now we have that national title. We're pretty happy about that; we're proud of that. It was one of our main goals that we accomplished."
The excitement remained high as Dix, Bolden, and Garvin took to the track for the 100m finals. The collegiate record of 9.90 was what Dix was aiming for as he got out to a flawless start. Trindon Holliday of LSU was right behind Dix as they crossed the line, Dix at 9.93 and Holiday at 10.06. Dix now holds the fastest time in the nation in the 100m as well as the 4x100m.
"I am happy, it's nice to have the title back; it was a good win," Dix said. "I thought I could have run faster. I probably should have run through the line instead of celebrating a little early. I didn't get the [collegiate] record but I will get it eventually. I will go to worlds and try to break it.
"It was a good competition," Dix said. "I know the guy behind me was only at 10.06 but he ran great which helped me run great. I am glad I had that competition. He got out ahead of me. I needed that push and he gave it to me. That is exactly what I needed to run a good time."
The meet isn't over yet for Dix who will defend his title in the 200m finals Saturday.
"This is the longest week of my life," Dix said. "I had to make sure my legs were healthy because I had to run every day. That's why I took it easy in the early races. I have been here before and I know how to get the job done."
Also getting the job done in the 100m was Garvin who grabbed sixth with a 10.30 clock, while Bolden was just three one-thousandths of a second behind in seventh.
In the final scoring event of the evening, the 3,000m steeplechase, senior Andrew Lemoncello (St. Andrew's, Scotland) accomplished what he came to do with a runner-up finish in a new personal best time of 8:27.29, also a Florida State record.
"I feel really great," Lemoncello said following his race. "The race went almost exactly as I thought it would. I knew the four of us that broke away were the favorites to go for it and I prefer those races where it strings out early and goes hard from the start. As soon as Barnabas Kirui [of Mississippi] went with a few laps to go I knew I had to do something."
The last two seasons, Lemoncello placed fourth at the national meet.
"I got lucky and was able to hold off the other guys and got a personal record by three seconds," Lemoncello said.
"Today I was nervous for the first time in about four years. It was because this was my last race [with Florida State] and the last two years I placed fourth. I knew I had it in me. It's just strange to have this nervous energy in me all day long. But I feel great and did exactly what I wanted to and I really did the best I had in me."
A surprise in the steeple was junior Luke Gunn (Forest Gate, England) clocking in at 8:37.30 to secure a point in eighth.
"Luke is getting better and better with every single race," Lemoncello said. "This was exactly what we wanted today."
The women's steeplechase was also a big moment for the Seminoles and particularly senior Barbara Parker (Norfolk, England) who placed 16th at the NCAA Championships last season.
Parker got out to a good start and was able to maintain her position at the front of the pack. The ACC Champion was able to hold strong through the final hurdle and was the third to cross the line in a new personal best and Florida State record time of 9:48.82.
"I wanted to lead or at least be at the front for the start of the race because I don't like to hurdle behind people," Parker said. "I got caught up a bit in the middle and that's where I lack off. I just tried to stay with the two people who went past and I always work for it.
"I knew with 800 meters to go they were right there and I could get them. I just missed the British record. But I'm really pleased with my time and place. I wanted to break fifty and I wanted to get a medal, so I'm very happy."
In the semifinals of the men's 400m, junior Ricardo Chambers (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) posted 45.46, the second fastest qualifying time of the day. He will move on to claim his first national title in the event on Saturday.
Also moving on to the finals will be senior Alyce Williams (Palm Coast, Fla.) whose 43'5.0" leap in the triple jump was good for sixth in the qualifying round.
The Seminole men end the day in first place with 34 points, but on their heels is Auburn with 32 and LSU with 28.
Competition kicks off at 1:30pm EST with the men's 400m finals. The event will be broadcast live on CBS from 1:00pm to 3:30pm EST and live results can be found at Seminoles.com or

Championship performances in the 400m and 200m clinched the victory for the Seminoles.
June 9, 2007
SACRAMENTO, CA - Ranked first coming into the final day of competition at the NCAA Championships, Florida State's men clinched their back-to-back national team title after two stellar performances in the 200m and 400m.
Ricardo Chambers (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) ran solid in the 400m finals, getting out to a good start and holding his position through the first 200m. The race heated up in the final 50-meters as Chambers was approached by Southern California's Lionel Larry. At the line, Chambers took to the gold in 44.66, just four one-hundredths of a seconds ahead of Larry.
"I just wanted to go out there, win the race, and put my team in a spot to win," Chambers said. "I knew that Lionel Larry was going to come up hard on me. I just had to run my own race; I wasn't trying to beat him in the first 200. I tried to keep my composure and finish strong.
"It was a really good race and I am happy that I won it."
Next up was the event many had been waiting for, Walter Dix (Coral Springs, Fla.) in the 200m finals. Dix ran in lane six with fellow Seminole Charles Clark (Virginia Beach, Va.) in lane seven.
Dix had a great start and came tearing around the turn to maintain the lead for the final 100 meters and crossed the line in 20.48 to defend his title and clinch the team championship for the men.
"[Winning the 100m and 200m] is something I've been working on since my freshman year," Dix said. "So now I've got that out of the way. I still have the 100 meter record to get, but that's my next thing to do."
With the men's win secured, the women had chances to score in the 1,500m, 4x100m relay and triple jump.
Sophomore Susan Kuijken (Nijmejor, Netherlands) ran a school record 4:15.68 to qualify in the 1,500m on Thursday and came back to break her own time with a second-place finish of 4:11.34.
Keyla Smith (Daytona Beach, Fla.), Kandia Batchelor (Tampa, Fla.), India Pettus (Cleveland, Oh.), and Alycia Williams (Palm Coast, Fla.) took to the track in the 4x400m finals after qualifying seventh on Thursday. The ladies would finish in the seventh spot with a season-best time of 3:31.10, adding two points for the women.
The final points came from Alyce Williams (Palm Coast, Fla.) after her sixth-place finish in the triple jump (43'2.50"/13.17m) to bring the team score to 19.
The women finished No. 14 overall, the same spot as last season but this year they improved their score by one point.
