December 12, 1984 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Randy Givens, an 18 time All-American track star at Florida State for the past four years, has won the 1984 Broderick Award for
Track and Field, as voted on by the country's women's athletic directors. The Broderick Company, manufacturers of women's apparel, each year chooses the best collegiate athlete in the nation in
each of the NCAA-sponsored women's sports. Those winners then become eligible for the Broderick Cup, given to the nation's top athlete. Givens won on the basis of her 1984 track season, one in
which she won four events in leading Florida State to the NCAA crown. She also went on to make the Olympic team and placed sixth in the 200 meters. In her career at FSU, Givens was an eight time
national collegiate champion. She presently holds three collegiate records. The Amityville, N.Y. native was presented with the Broderick award at the halftime of the Florida State-Florida
basketball game.

FSU women win NCAA track title.
EUGENE, Ore. – Marita Payne and Randy Givens won individual titles and the 400-meter relay team successfully defended its national championship as Florida State won its first NCAA track and field team title.
Florida State’s winning total was 154 to Tennessee’s 124 and Stamford’s 71.
“We’re ecstatic,” said head coach Gary Winckler, who was named coach of the year by the National Track and Field Coaches Association moments after his team finished 1-2-3 in the 200 meters. “If we could have set a scenario before the season of how we wanted things to go, it would have ended this way. The meet came down to the 200 and when you go 1-2-3 that about finishes it off.”
Florida State trailed Tennessee going into the 200 meters, the last event. But the rest of the country learned that speed kills as the Seminoles picked up 37 points on the 1-2-3 finish by Givens, Brenda Cliette, and Payne. Freshman Janet Davis also came in sixth in the race while Michelle Finn’s trials time was good enough for ninth. “I’ve never been so happy in my life,” said Davis, who was on FSU’s winning mile-relay team on Friday in addition to her 200 finish. Added Givens, “It’s fantastic. I’m so happy to end my career on this note.”
Givens won the 200 in 22.87 after finishing third in the country in each of her first three years at FSU. “It was something I was hoping for after I won the 100,” said the senior. Friday, Givens had won her first individual national title in the 100 meters.
Florida State’s third individual win came from senior Payne in the 400. The collegiate record holder in the event, she won it for the second time in her career after winning in 1982 in Provo, Utah. She finished fifth a year ago.
Texas El-Paso’s Charmaine Crooks, who finished second to Payne in Provo, appeared to be the early winner, passing the FSU senior at the 200-meter mark. But Payne waited until the straightaway to outkick Crooks and hit the tape in a Hayward Field-record 51.05.
“I just wanted to come back and win it after my performance last year,” she said. “I was injured before last year’s meet, so I really wanted to finish things off in first place this year.”
Payne had but an hour to prepare for the 200, where she finished third in 23.20, her highest finish in the event at the NCAAs. “After the relay, then the 400, I just keep feeling better so the 200 was easy,” she said.
Florida State opened Saturday’s events with its second consecutive national championship in the 400-meter relay, easily beating Tennessee 43.72 to 44.16. The time by the foursome of Finn, Cliette, Payne and Givens was the nation’s best of the year and also a Hayward Field mark. But it was almost a second off of FSU’s collegiate record of 42.94, run last year in Houston.
“We had a slight lead and I just got the stick and ran,” said anchor Givens. “I think our handoffs were good, and that’s what won it for us.”
Florida State also picked up three points in the high jump where Wendy Markham, who was second a year ago, finished tenth. She cleared the opening height of 5 feet, 9 inches, passed at 5-10 and cleared 5-10 ¾ on her second try. She missed three times at 6-0 ¼ and may have been affected when she slammed her head into the bar on her second attempt. Winckler, who is a graduate of Oregon State, was the overwhelming choice for coach of the year. After serving a year as assistant coach at FSU, he led the 1982 and 1983 teams to third- and second-place finishes, respectively, in the NCAA final.
Florida State’s five NCAA winners may be the most for women from one school in a single NCAA meet. But records to confirm it were not available at the meet. The men’s record of seven was achieved by Ohio State in 1936 when Jesse Owens won four individual titles.
For Florida State’s women’s program, it was the fourth national championship. The softball team won the title in 1981 and 1982 while the golf team was No. 1 in the nation in 1981.
Florida State’s men’s team finished 28th in the nation with 18 ½ points. Tallahassee native Leander McKenzie scored 11 of those points with a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles and an 11th-place finish in the 110-meter high hurdles. Senior high jumper Kenny Smith scored the other points with a tie for fifth in the high jump.
