Florida State Athletics Begins National Search For Head Women's Soccer Coach.
March 29, 2022
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford announced Tuesday that a national search for a new head women's soccer coach will begin immediately.
"Coach (Mark) Krikorian has done a remarkable job over his tenure here and all Florida State alumni and supporters deeply appreciate not only what he has accomplished in terms of championships, but the caliber of graduates he has produced," said Alford. " We all wish him and his family well.
"We have the best women's soccer program in the country and we will identify and pursue the best coach for our program. We have committed resources that are second to none and will continue to invest in the student-athlete experience."
Florida State President Richard McCullough also praised the Seminoles' legendary head coach.
"We're saddened that Coach
Krikorian will be leaving FSU," said McCullough. "He is one of the most successful coaches in collegiate women's soccer history, and we are grateful for his years of service, his dedication to our
student-athletes, and the glory he brought to our university. We wish him all the best in the future as we look forward to our soccer program's continued success."
April 25, 2022
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford named Tennessee head coach Brian Pensky as FSU women's soccer head coach on Monday. Pensky, who led the Volunteers to the 2021 SEC Championship, and has won National, ACC and SEC Coach of the Year honors, will take over the Seminoles after coaching Tennessee for the last 10 years.
"Florida State's soccer program is regarded as one of if not the best in the country and rightfully so," said Pensky. "The opportunity to be a part of this great program with the remarkable tradition is an honor. What Mark (Krikorian) did here over the last 17 years is unparalleled in our game. Simply put, he has been the best in the business."
"But it is more than just the soccer program that attracted me. The status of the university as a top tier public institution academically is just as impressive as the athletic history. And, I have coached in the ACC and I know the strength of the league is second to none in the country.
"I take over the program with endless humility and understanding of the task at hand."
Tennessee's SEC Championship this year highlighted a season in which the Vols finished with a 20-3-0 record and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16. Pensky was named the SEC Coach of the Year following the season and the entire UT coaching staff was recognized as the Southeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year.
"After getting a great deal of input from our soccer student-athletes, we set out to attract the very best coach in the country to lead what has become the premier program in the country. I am very pleased to announce that in Brian Pensky we have found the person whose talent and drive match our consistently high expectations for FSU soccer.
"Coach Pensky is a proven winner both in the ACC which we consider the nation's best conference and the SEC. He has built programs and sustained consistent, high-level success proving his abilities time and time again.
"I am excited about the future of our program under Coach Pensky and we welcome him and his family to Florida State."
Pensky guided the 2018 Volunteers to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time in program history. Tennessee finished 16-3-3 overall and recorded the highest winning percentage (.795) and fewest losses (3) in a single season in school history. The Vols earned consensus top-10 status following the historic campaign.
"Our soccer program has not only brought three national championships to Florida State University, but they have produced outstanding leaders who are dedicated students," said FSU President Richard McCullough. "In short, they represent the very best of what intercollegiate athletics is all about.
"Our team members and our program deserve a coach who has been highly successful both on and off the field and we have found that in Coach Pensky. I will be first in line cheering the team and Coach Pensky on next season."
Over the last five seasons, Tennessee has won an SEC title, finished second in the league three times and third once while reaching the NCAA Elite 8 and Sweet 16. Pensky's overall record in 10 years in Knoxville is 118-58-25.
Prior to taking over at Tennessee, Pensky was the head women's coach at the University of Maryland for seven seasons.
In 2010, Maryland earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, and Pensky was named both National Coach of the Year by Soccer America and ACC Coach of the Year. He served as Maryland's head coach from 2005-11 and posted a 67-52-20 overall record. While at the helm in College Park, Pensky led the Terrapins to their most successful three-year run in program history, with a 44-14-9 record and a .724 win percentage over the last three seasons.
Pensky guided Maryland to NCAA Tournament appearances in each of the last three seasons, including Sweet 16 appearances in both 2009 and 2011.
In 2010, Pensky led Maryland to its best season in program history with an 18-2-3 (.848) overall ledger and a school-record 7-2-1 mark in the ACC.
Playing in the highly competitive ACC, Pensky guided the Terps to their second-ever ACC Championship match in 2011 and the Terps advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 that season.
Before guiding the women's team, Pensky served as an assistant coach with the Maryland men's program, helping those Terrapins to three consecutive College Cup berths (2002-04). Working with head coach Sasho Cirovski, Pensky helped the Terps to a 57-14-3 record (.791 win percentage). The men captured the ACC Tournament title in 2002 and the regular-season crown in 2003. In 2004, CollegeSoccerNews.com named Pensky one of the top assistant coaches in the nation.
Before working under Cirovski for three seasons, Pensky was an assistant at Loyola College in Maryland for one season after serving as an assistant coach with the women's team at George Washington the previous three seasons.
Pensky, whose overall record as coach at Tennessee and Maryland is 185-111-45, earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Emory University in 1991. He has an "A" license from the United States Soccer Federation as well as an NSCAA Premier and NSCAA goalkeeping diploma.
Contingent on the successful completion of a background check, Pensky takes over an FSU program that will be defending National Champions in 2022 and has reached the national title game in three of the last four seasons.
Pensky and his wife, Abby, have three children - boy-girl twins Will and Alex and their youngest son, Ben.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - No. 1 Florida State (0-0-1) played to a scoreless draw after 90 minutes of action at No. 12 South Carolina (0-0-1).
Florida State is unbeaten in its last 14 season openers and junior goalkeeper Cristina Roque remains unbeaten in her career with a record of 27-0-7.
Jenna Nighswonger got things started for the Noles with two early shots, one in the ninth minute and one in the 10th minute that led to the first of seven corners for FSU. Soccer Earns First Win of the Season, 3-1, Over Georgia.
ATHENS, Ga. - No. 1 Florida State (1-0-1) earned its first win of the season and first win under head coach Brian Pensky after a 3-1 win over Georgia (1-1-0).
Cristina Roque improved to 28-0-7 in her career and the Noles improved to 46-16-10 on the road since 2013. The win also marked FSU's first win against Georgia in Athens.
The Noles came out firing in the first half against Georgia, with seven shots, five on goal and three goals. Beata Olsson got off the first shot for the Noles in the fifth minute after a nice turn when receiving a throw-in by Clara Robbins. After the goal kick that followed resulted in a turnover, Florida State scored its first goal of the season in the sixth minute. Ran Iwai brought the ball up from the back and passed it to Jenna Nighswonger in the center of the field who dropped it off to Onyi Echegini in the top right corner of the box. She shot it from the top of the 18-yard box into the bottom right corner of the net for her first goal as a Seminole.
Three minutes later, Echegini had another great look from the right side that clanked off both posts but was cleared by the Georgia defense. In the 12th minute, Cristina Roque made her first save of the game diving to her right.
14 minutes later, the Seminoles took a 2-0 lead after Jenna Nighswonger scored her 14th career goal. She intercepted a Georgia pass at the top of the 18-yard box and struck a bending ball into the bottom left corner of the net.
Two minutes later in the 28th minute, Georgia cut the lead in half with a goal scored by Dani Murguia in the bottom left of the goal off an assist by Madison Haugen.

Olsson's shot was deflected out and led to an FSU corner kick. The Noles would convert on the corner kick in the 34th minute as Alagoa sent the ball into the front post. Bissell then headed the ball towards the back post and into the net for her second career goal, giving FSU a 3-1 lead into halftime.

Three minutes later in the 53rd minute, the Noles had a corner kick that went in off the head of Echegini but was called off because of interference. The Garnet and Gold had two more shots in the 54th and 56th minutes by Robbins and Nighswonger both saved by the UGA keeper.

Soccer Ties Auburn 1-1 in the Home Opener.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 2 Florida State soccer team (1-0-2) tied No. 16 Auburn (2-0-1) 1-1 on Thursday after a two-hour lightning delay at the Seminole Soccer Complex.
Heather Payne scored the solo tally for the Seminoles, marking her third career goal. Cristina Roque improved her unbeaten career record to 28-0-8. Dating back to 2011, Florida State is 113-7-8 in the last 128 matches played at home.
The Seminoles came out eager in the opening minutes, registering three shots in the first 14 minutes, two of which came from Beata Olsson and one from Clara Robbins. The Seminoles were inches away from the opening goal when Jody Brown nailed the crossbar with a shot on the receiving end of a cross from Ran Iwai. Emma Bissell attempted to clean up the rebound when she was fouled by a Tiger defender resulting in a penalty kick for the Seminoles. Payne slotted the ball from the penalty mark, giving FSU a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute.
The Seminoles entered the locker room at halftime with the lead, 70 percent of the possession, and five shots to Auburn's three. In the 47th minute, Lauren Flynn sent a pass down the left side to Brown and then Brown quickly redirected it to Jenna Nighswonger in the midfield. Nighswonger's shot missed by mere inches, hitting the goalpost once again.
Auburn responded in the 62nd minute, scoring off a set piece with a header from Sydnie Thibodaux. The Seminoles attempted to regain the advantage many times, coming up short every time. In the 83rd minute, Nighswonger sliced a ball past the Tiger defense, finding Brown on an island. Brown took the keeper on one-on-one and shot just wide on the right side. The Seminoles' last quality chance came in the 88th minute once again by Brown. This time the Tiger's goalkeeper came up big with a save leading to a Seminole corner.
Florida State ended the match with 17 shots and 10 on goal compared to Auburn's six shots and three on goal.

Soccer Defeats Florida, 5-0, in the Sunshine Showdown.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 10 Florida State soccer team (2-0-2) took down the University of Florida (2-4), 5-0, in Gainesville on Sunday night. With the win, FSU has now won each of the last five meetings, tying the longest winning streak in series history.
Florida State is now 47-16-10 on the road since 2013 and the Noles are unbeaten in their last 13 games, dating back to the last game of the regular season in 2021.
Florida State was the aggressor in the first half scoring one goal on nine shots, while the Gators only got off one shot. In the 12th minute, the Seminoles had a great chance on goal after a handball 19 yards out led to an indirect free kick. Jenna Nighswonger took the shot but hit the net's left side. Two minutes later in the 15th minute, the Noles had another good look, this one by Beata Olsson. Jody Brown made a run from the right side to the center of the field and slid a pass to Beata Olsson but the UF defense blocked her shot.
One minute later, Florida State would get on the scoreboard with Jenna Nighswongers' second goal of the season. Clara Robbins passed the ball to Olivia Garcia down the left side of the field. Garcia then would give it to Nighswonger at the top of the 18-yard box and she would one time it into the back of the net.
The Noles would get their second goal early in the second half. Olivia Garcia scored her first career goal in the 48th minute. Sophia Nguyen dropped it off to Jody Brown at the right side of the 18-yard box, Brown then crossed it across the face of the goal to Garcia who made it 2-0.
FSU expanded its lead in the 57th minute with Jody Brown's first goal of the season. She received a pass from Nighswonger just inside the 18-yard box and snuck it right past the UF keeper, giving the Noles a 3-0 lead.
The lead grew to four in the 68th minute on a Florida own goal. Nguyen crossed the ball from the left side and a UF defender went to clear the pass but kicked it right into her own goal.
Beata Olsson capped things off in the 87th minute with her first goal of the season on a header that came off of a cross by Emma Bissell.

Soccer Defeats Florida Gulf Coast 5-0.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 8 Florida State soccer team (3-0-2) took down Florida Gulf Coast University (2-4), 5-0, in Tallahassee on Thursday night. Tonight's win marks win 183 wins at home since 2005.
In the month of September, the Seminoles' all-time record is 140-56-11 with 58 wins in the last 70 matches played. Since 2005, the Seminoles are 96-20-8 in September since 2005 with 69 shutouts. The Seminoles boast an impressive .901 win percentage at home since 2005.
Cristina Roque earned another clean sheet and a win with the shutout over FGCU. Roque is a combined 29-0-8 in her career. She has been a key part of the Seminole defense, extending the unbeaten streak to 14 games, dating back to the last game of the regular season in 2021.
The offense has proven to be best in the second half with four or more goals in the second half of the last two games. Despite firing off 11 shots in the first half, the Seminoles were unable to find the back of the net. After halftime, Florida State came out and scored two minutes into the second half. Clara Robbins scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Jody Brown. Robbins received the pass from Brown in the middle of the 18-yard box and finished it with one touch between the defender's legs.
Eight minutes later, freshman Olivia Garcia added another tally for the Seminoles. Jenna Nighswonger beat FGCU's outside right defender and sent the ball into the box, forcing the keeper to come out and deflect it. Garcia was in the right place at the right time, finishing the deflection with one-touch into the lower left corner of the goal.
The Seminoles came back and scored another goal in an even shorter amount of time, tallying the third goal only two minutes after the previous one. Sophia Nguyen sent in a cross from the right side to Garcia on the far post. Garcia collected the cross and laid it back to Robbins at the same spot as her first goal. This time around, Robbins had enough time to take a touch and curl it into the upper right corner, leaving the FGCU keeper with no chance of saving it.
Emma Bissell scored the fourth goal of the match in the 82nd minute. Bissell collected a clearance from Heather Gilchrist deep in the Seminole defense at midfield. In a valiant solo effort, Bissell dribbled down the field, fending off FGCU defenders before striking the ball into the lower right corner of the net from the left side of the 18-yard box.
In the final minute of play, Olivia Lebdaoui scored her first career goal. Maria Alagoa sent the ball over the Eagle's defense into space for Lebdaoui to run on to. Lebdaoui cut the defender to the left and finished it in the upper left corner of the goal.

Soccer Dominates Boston College in the ACC Opener.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The No. 12 Florida State soccer team (5-0-2) dominated Boston College (4-2-3), 6-0, in the ACC opener. With the win, the Seminoles are unbeaten in the last 16 games, good for the third-longest unbeaten streak in school history. FSU also improves to 7-2-2 in ACC openers since 2012. The garnet and gold have outscored their last four opponents 21-0 with four straight wins of five goals or more.
The Florida State offense struck early in the first half, thanks to the Seminole defense. Two steals in the Boston College final third led to two scores by Onyi Echegini. The Seminoles' defense stifled the Eagles, allowing just six shots and one shot on goal, leading to Cristina Roque's 30th career win, improving her career record to 30-0-8.
Just one minute and four seconds into the game the Seminoles took an early lead thanks to Echegini's third goal of the season. After stealing a Boston College throw-in, Echegini worked her way to the left edge of the 18-yard box and fired one into the top right corner of the net across the BC keeper's face.
10 minutes later, Echegini struck again with her second goal of the game. Jody Brown stole the ball on a Boston College pass about 30 yards away from the BC goal. She passed the ball to the left to Echegini who would score her second goal of the game from eight yards out. She became the fourth Nole this season to record two goals in a game.
Echegini almost scored her third goal of the game in the 21st minute on a header off a corner kick but she was called for a foul inside the 6-yard box. She converted on her first career hat trick in the 55th minute. Jenna Nighswonger took the ball up the middle of the field and passed it off to Clara Robbins who split two defenders with the pass to Echegini. One-on-one with the goalkeeper, Echegini converted from seven yards out.
Four minutes later, Nighswonger extended the lead to four with her third goal of the season. She took the corner kick from the left corner and bent it into the back post. The ball ricocheted off the post and into the back of a Boston College defender before finding the net.
Sophia Nguyen expanded the lead with her first career goal in the 75th minute. After throwing the ball in to Olivia Garcia, Nguyen got the ball back towards the left sideline and bent one into the goal between a Boston College defender.
Kaitlyn Zipay capped things off in the 84th minute with her first goal of the season as well. Zipay played a give-and-go with Emma Bissell and popped out behind the BC defense and slid her shot past the Eagle's goalkeeper.

Soccer Takes Down Louisville 5-1 at Home.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 7 Florida State soccer team (6-0-2) defeated Louisville (4-2-2) in the Seminole's ACC home opener 5-1 on Thursday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex. Tonight's match was dedicated to honoring suicide prevention month and promoting the normalization of mental health.
For the fifth consecutive game, the Seminoles scored at least five goals, outscoring their opponents 26-1. Florida State has proven to be a second-half team with 20 of their 30 goals scored this season in the second half. At home, the Seminoles are a dominant with 246-46-16 all-time record. Jenna Nighswonger led the offense with a career-high five points consisting of three assists and one goal. Mia Justus remains unbeaten this season with a 3-0 record.
Tonight's win marked the ninth consecutive victory over the Cardinals and a perfect 5-0 at home against Louisville. Prior to tonight's match, Louisville had only allowed four goals in seven games before letting up five to the Seminoles. Florida State wasted no time gaining the lead in the second minute with a penalty kick from Nighswonger. Jody Brown earned the penalty for the Seminoles when she was dragged down inside the box by a Cardinal defender.
Beata Olsson doubled the lead in the 13th minute with her fourth goal of the season. The play leading up to the goal started in the midfield with LeiLanni Nesbeth. Nesbeth found Heather Payne deep on the right side behind the Cardinal defensive line. Payne one-touch slotted the ball directly to Olsson's feet, finding the back of the net.
The Cardinals scored their only goal against the Seminoles in the 32nd minute on a penalty kick by Maisie Whitsett. The penalty kick was awarded after a scramble and a handball in the box from Florida State. Mia Justus chose the correct side but could not get behind the shot enough, resulting in the first goal she let up this season.
As usual, the Seminoles were successful on the offense in the second half, resulting in three more goals. Nesbeth got things rolling with a header off Nighswonger's corner kick in the 50th minute. Nighswonger sent the ball bending into the box from the right corner with her left foot and Nesbeth got just enough on the ball to redirect it around the keeper.
Onyi Echegini scored her sixth goal of the season in almost the same exact manner as Nesbeth. Once again, Nighswonger sent the ball in from the corner on the right side, but Echegini was there to send it in with her head in the 58th minute.
Less than a minute later, Clara Robbins scored the night's final goal. Payne found herself in a familiar position, receiving the ball on the right side from Nesbeth deep in the middle. Payne sent the ball into Nighswonger at the top of the penalty box who dropped it off to Robbins in the middle. Robbins one-touch finished it in the lower left corner. Robbins now has three goals on the season.

Soccer Takes Down No. 12 Duke 5-1.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 4 Florida State soccer team (10-1-2) defeated No. 12 Duke (10-4) 5-1 at the Seminole Soccer Complex Thursday night in Tallahassee. The Seminoles tallied their sixth game with five or more goals to take the lead in ACC conference play with a record of 6-1.
Jody Brown and Jenna Nighswonger led the Seminole offense with seven points combined. Brown tallied her third career game with two goals and sits at second on the team with 17 points. Nighswonger leads with 18 points after three assists on the night. In her seventh season, Clara Robbins has become only the seventh Seminole to appear in 100 games and tallied one assist on the night. Cristina Roque extended her unbeaten career record to 33-0-8, holding the Blue Devils to only one goal with four saves.
Brown earned her fifth goal of the season in the 23rd minute with an assist from Nighswonger. The goal effort started at midfield with a combination between Robbins and Nighswonger. Nighswonger turned and chipped the ball over Duke's defensive line into Brown's stride. Brown collected the ball with a touch and then slipped it past the keeper to the left side of the net. The Blue Devils responded four minutes later, getting the final touch on a scramble in the box.
After going into the locker room at halftime with a 1-1 tie, Florida State was hungry for more. Once again, Brown put the Seminoles back on top with a screaming shot to the far side of the net in the 50th minute. Onyi Echegini controlled a 50/50 ball in the midfield before penetrating Duke's defensive line. Brown made her supporting run down the right side and received the ball from Echegini just inside the 18-yard box. With plenty of time and space, Brown struck the ball in for her second goal of the night.
Four minutes later, Beata Olsson added another goal with her fifth of the season. The Seminoles earned a free kick in the midfield from a Duke foul and Nighswonger stepped up to take it. Nighswonger bent the ball into Olsson, who was wide open in the box. Olsson connected her head to the cross and redirected it in past the keeper.
LeiLanni Nesbeth scored her second goal of the season off a corner kick from Nighswonger. Nighswonger sent the ball in from the left side, causing a scramble among both teams. Nesbeth found just enough space to poke the ball into the goal amongst the chaos in the box.
The final tally for the Seminoles came in the 80th minute from Olivia Garcia. Garcia scored the second header of the night off a cross from Maria Alagoa. Much in the fashion of Olsson's goal, the play started with a free kick around the same spot. Alagoa and Sophia Nguyen combined on the set piece before Alagoa sent the ball into Garcia in the box. Garcia has tallied three goals on the season so far.

Soccer Falls to No. 2 North Carolina 2-1.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 4 Florida State soccer team (10-2-2) dropped a hard-fought 2-1 match at home against No. 2 North Carolina (13-3-0) on Thursday night in Tallahassee.
Florida State took the lead early in the first half just four minutes and 10 seconds into the game, scoring the fastest goal that North Carolina has let up all season. The build-up started on the right side with Jody Brown as she took on her defender and found Jenna Nighswonger wide open in the middle. Nighswonger fed the ball into Onyi Echegini as she made a run across the 18-yard box. Echegini fended off the Tar Heel defender and slotted her shot into the net.
North Carolina tied it up in the 32nd minute with a penalty kick from Tori Hansen. The penalty kick came after a Florida State handball inside the box. The Seminoles went into the locker room at the half with the edge in shots, 7-5, and the sole corner of the half.
The second half consisted of missed opportunities with shots hitting the post and going just wide of the net. Beata Olsson had the best looks of the half in the 57th minute when she hit the left post on a shot and then missed wide with her head on the next play. North Carolina responded quickly, scoring their second goal of the match on an unassisted effort by Ally Sentnor in the 58th minute.
The Seminoles had most of the possession and more chances on goal throughout the game but could not connect in the final moments. Cristina Roque tallied six saves on the night, her second-highest in a game so far this season.

Soccer Defeats No. 20 Pitt 1-0 on the Road.
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The No. 4 Florida State soccer team (11-2-2) took down No. 20 Pitt (12-4-1) 1-0 on the road on Sunday afternoon. The Seminoles bounced back after a 2-1 loss to No. 2 UNC on Thursday night.
The Seminole defense was strong all game, allowing only four shots on goal, resulting in four saves for Mia Justus and the eighth shutout of the season for the Seminoles.
The first half was an uneventful one for both teams as the score was tied at zero after 45 minutes. The Seminoles had a 9-3 shots advantage but only two shots on goal. FSU had its best look with less than a minute to go as Olivia Garcia scored what she thought was the fourth goal of her freshman campaign, but she was called offsides.
In the 64th minute, Jenna Nighswonger had a great look from the center of the box after a cross from Clara Robbins. Robbins ran the ball into the right corner and sent it right to Nighswonger who struck the ball right at the Pitt keeper in the center of the goal.
The 0-0 tie was broken in the 67th minute by LeiLanni Nesbeth on FSU's 14th shot of the day. Heather Payne ran the ball to the end line and crossed it into the box. A Pitt defender headed it out but right to Nesbeth who let the ball bounce before striking an absolute rocket from 16 yards out into the left side of the net.
In the 88th minute, Pittsburgh thought that they received a penalty kick after a Nesbeth foul near the edge of the 18-yard box, but after review, it was determined that the foul was just outside the box. The proceeding free kick went off the crossbar.

Soccer Closes Regular Season with 4-1 Win Over Virginia Tech.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 5 Florida State soccer team (12-2-2) closed off their regular season with a 4-1 win at home against Virginia Tech (10-6-2) on Thursday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The Seminoles finished the regular season tied in points for first place in the ACC and will be a top-two seed at the ACC Tournament. FSU earned a share of its fifth ACC regular season championship.
Florida State wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, scoring 61 seconds after the first whistle. The Hokies fouled Jenna Nighswonger about 30 yards out from the goal. Nighswonger stepped up to take the free kick, sending a lofted ball into a mass of players. Virginia Tech's keeper was able to get a piece of the initial ball but failed to collect it, rebounding it to the foot of LeiLanni Nesbeth. Nesbeth redirected the rebound into the back of the net, scoring the second-fastest goal of the season for the Seminoles.
Only two minutes later, Florida State knocked in another set-piece goal, this time with Onyi Echegini on the receiving end. The foul took place in roughly the same spot as the first free-kick, but instead of sending the ball directly into the 18-yard box, Nighswonger played it to Heather Payne in the right corner. Payne crossed the ball to the back post where Echegini had the vertical advantage, putting it past the keeper with her head.
The Seminoles notched two more goals in the second half while the Hokies scored their lone goal of the match. After 70 minutes without a goal, Echegini came back for seconds. Clara Robbins earned an assist on the night with a pass into Echegini in the 18-yard box. Echegini gathered it with two touches and beat the keeper near post.
Virginia Tech responded in the 83rd minute with Emmalee McCarter scoring a goal from the right side, assisted by Gabby Johnson. Seven minutes later and with 48 seconds left, Florida State continued to put on the pressure, forcing the keeper to foul Beata Olsson inside the 18-yard box. Soccer Advances To The NCAA Second Round With A 3-0 Win over FGCU.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 1 Florida State soccer team (14-2-3) defeated Florida Gulf Coast (12-6-2) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament Friday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The Seminoles blanked the Eagles for the second time this season, with a final score of 3-0.
Florida State improved its first-round record to 21-0-1 with tonight's win. The Seminole defense was the difference maker in the matchup, with the game-winning goal coming from Lauren Flynn. Cristina Roque did her part and kept the Eagles out of the net for her 24th career shutout.
The first half consisted of a handful of good chances offensively, but FGCU's keeper Katie Sullivan tallied three saves to keep the Seminoles off the scoreboard. Florida State had the advantage in shots with 11 and 72% of the possession in the first half.
Flynn sparked the Seminoles in the 52nd minute with a gritty solo effort and her third career goal. Flynn ventured up into the Eagles' 18-yard-box, navigated through the chaos of FGCU defenders and placed her shot in the lower left corner.
10 minutes later, LeiLanni Nesbeth scored her 12th career goal and 5th of the season in the 62nd minute. The build-up began in the midfield with the ball at Clara Robbins' feet. She slotted it in on the right side of the 18-yard-box to Jody Brown. Brown found Nesbeth at the top of the box, playing the ball to her right foot. Nesbeth took the shot with one touch and thanks to a fortunate deflection, she put the Seminoles up 2-0.
The final goal of the night happened in the 76th minute by Kaitlin Zipay. In typical Florida State soccer fashion, the goal was a finish off a corner kick from Jenna Nighswonger. Nighswonger sent the ball in from the right corner into the six-yard box. Zipay was in the right place at the right time, redirecting it into the goal with her right shoulder. Zipay has scored two goals in her career, both of which were this season.

by Jordyn Rolli
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The top-seeded Florida State soccer team (17-2-3) defeated third-seeded Arkansas (13-4-5) 1-0 on Saturday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex in front of 2,667 people, the largest postseason crowd in FSU history and sixth largest crowd at the Seminole Soccer Complex. Tonight's win sends the Seminoles to their 13th College Cup appearance in program history and fourth in the last five years.
The Seminoles improved to 11-4-2 all-time in the Elite Eight and 55-2-1 at home in the NCAA Tournament. Cristina Roque led the Florida State defense, shutting out the Razorbacks with five saves. On the offensive side, Jenna Nighswonger created chances for the Seminoles ultimately leading up to the lone goal of the match.
Tonight's contest was relatively even on paper, with the Seminoles gaining an edge in shots with 13 compared to the Razorbacks' 11. In the first half, Arkansas led with 52% of the possession and the Seminoles led in the second half with 54%. Both teams finished the game with five corner kicks apiece.
The lone goal of the match came from none other than a corner kick off Nighswonger's left foot. Nighswonger sent the ball into the near post from the right corner and a failed clearance attempt from an Arkansas player resulted in an own goal. Even though Nighswonger doesn't officially get credit for creating the goal, she has been a threat on the field this season tallying three goals and six assists off set pieces and corners.
