Soccer Has Four All-Americans. May 13, 2021 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State soccer team had four student-athletes named the United Soccer
Coaches All-Americans as announced on Thursday afternoon. Jaelin Howell and Malia Berkely were named First Team All-Americans, Emily Madril was named a Second Team All-American and Yujie Zhao was
named to the third team. It was Berkely and Zhao's second All-American honor and Howell and Madril's first. Howell's first All-American honor makes her the Seminoles 21st First Team All-American in
program history and Berkely became Florida State's fifth two-time First Team All-American. With four All-Americans in 2020-21, FSU has earned 51 all-time All-American accolades. This marks the 12th
time that Florida State has had multiple All-Americans in a season. Howell has started in all 14 games for the Seminoles this season as their starting holding midfielder. She has helped anchor a
backline that has recorded nine shutouts in 14 games and has only allowed seven goals all season. Howell has also made her presence known on the offensive end as she has scored five goals to go with a
pair of assists. She was named the ACC's Midfielder of the Year and to the All-ACC First Team in the fall. Howell was announced as one of the three finalists for the MAC Hermann Award yesterday. The
MAC Hermann is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. Berkely started all 11 games in the fall for the Seminoles, helping them to their seventh ACC
Tournament title. She anchored the defensive backline from her center-back position that held opponents to six goals in 11 games. The Seminoles recorded seven shutouts in the fall, including shutouts
in the first four games of the season. Berkely was named the ACC's Defensive Player of the Year and to the All-ACC First Team in the fall. She became the first player in ACC history to win
back-to-back Player of the Year honors. Berkely was also named a MAC Hermann Trophy finalist yesterday. Madril has started in all 14 games this season for the Seminoles as their starting
center-back. She has played all but 10 minutes for the Garnet and Gold this season. Madril has helped lead the Seminoles defense to nine shutouts in 14 games. The Seminoles have only allowed seven
goals and 52 shots with 31 shots on goal. She has also helped the Seminoles on offense, scoring 2 of FSU's 40 goals this season. Madril was named to the All-ACC Second Team in the fall. Zhao has
played in all 14 games this season for Florida State, recording three goals and four assists. Zhao has created excitement for the Seminole offense as she has played in 746 minutes off the bench. Zhao
was named to the All-ACC First Team in the fall. May 21, 2021 KANSAS CITY, Mo. - United Soccer Coaches announced on Friday
the 2020-21 National Staff of the Year winners for NCAA Divisions I, II, and III men's and women's soccer. The Florida State Soccer staff, led by head coach Mark Krikorian was named the Division I

finished the season with a 13-1-2 record. Florida State won its seventh ACC Championship in the fall after going a perfect 11-0. Florida State was dominant all season, outscoring its opponents
41-8. They were also unbeaten through 15 games for the second time in program history. In the fall the Seminoles scored 34 goals against ACC opponents. That was six more than any other season in the
first 11 games against conference foes. May 27, 2021 ST. LOUIS, Mo. - More honors continue to come in for the Florida State soccer team as
the Missouri Athletic Club and United Soccer Coaches Association named FSU's Jaelin Howell the winner of the MAC Hermann Trophy, presented to the top female player in NCAA Division I soccer. Howell
becomes the second Florida State player to claim the top individual honor in women's soccer. She started in all 16 games for the Seminoles this season as their starting holding midfielder. She has
helped anchor a backline that recorded 11 shutouts in 16 games and only allowed eight goals all season. Howell also made her presence known on the offensive end as she has scored five goals to go with
a pair of assists. The Lone Tree, Colorado native was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region First Team and was named a United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American. Howell was
also named to the TopDrawerSoccer Best XI First team and was rated the No. 3 player in the country by TopDrawerSoccer in the end of season top-100. Howell was named to the All-ACC First Team in the
fall and the ACC's Midfielder of the Year. She was also named to the ACC All-Tournament team as she helped lead the Seminoles to their seventh ACC Tournament title. Runners-up for the women's award
were Florida State's Malia Berkely and North Carolina's Brianna Pinto. The MAC Hermann Trophy, a 10-pound crystal soccer ball awarded annually since 1967, honors the United Soccer Coaches National

Soccer Dominates Notre Dame on Opening Night, 5-0.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - In a game that was dominated from the opening minutes the Seminoles went on to take down the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 5-0 on the opening night of the season. Florida State improved to 15-1 on opening day under head coach Mark Krikorian and 9-0 at home on opening day.
The 5-0 win was tied for the largest first game win under Krikorian. Florida State was highlighted by performances from Yujie Zhao, Cristina Roque and Emily Madril, who made her first appearance in a game in over two seasons.
The Seminole defense was stellar against the Irish allowing only two shots and one on goal that was saved by freshman goalkeeper Roque.
It didn't take long before the Seminoles lit up the scoreboard as they scored their opening goal in the 20th minute. Zhao scored her first of two goals in the opener on an assist from Malia Berkely. Zhao fired one from the top of the 18-yard box showing her leg strength and giving the Noles the lead.
18 minutes later and in the 38th minute Madril gave the Noles a 2-0 lead. She dribbled down the right side of the field uncontested before cutting to the middle of the box and firing one on the ground into the bottom left corner. It was her second career goal and first since October 5th of 2017.
It only took 13 minutes into the second half for Florida State to find the back of the net once again as Zhao scored her second goal of the night on assists from Kristen McFarland and Clara Robbins. Roque booted one to center field on a goal kick and after a few quick passes Zhao launched one from deep over the Notre Dame keeper's head to give FSU a 3-0 lead.
The Seminoles piled on in the 68th minutes with Jenna Nighswonger's first goal of the season and then Jody Brown got in on the action as well getting her first career goal in the Garnet and Gold in the 79th minute to secure the 5-0 Florida State Victory.

Soccer Caps Off Opening Weekend with 1-0 Win Over Louisville.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Different score but same result, Florida State (2-0) had another dominating performance with a 1-0 win over Louisville (1-1) Sunday afternoon, possessing the ball for 69 percent of the game.
The Seminole defense remained dominant, keeping Louisville to two shots the entire game after the Cardinals scored three goals in their opener against Miami on Thursday. The backline led by first team All-American and redshirt senior Malia Berkely and redshirt junior Emily Madril along with freshman goalkeeper Cristina Roque held preseason All-ACC member Emina Ekic in check as she did not even get off a shot after scoring two goals on Thursday.
The Seminoles have outshot their opponents 44-4 in the first two games of the season, with only two of those four shots on goal.
Florida State stayed with the same lineup as Thursday, when they recorded four goals off the bench led by leading goal scorer Yujie Zhao who had two goals on Thursday. Today, the Seminoles did not need the bench scoring as they got their lone goal from starter and sophomore LeiLanni Nesbeth. FSU got off eight shots in the first half with four of those on target but could not get one to fall.
There were five more shots to start off the second half before the 14th shot of the game finally hit the back of the net. Nesbeth recorded her first goal of the season and just the second of her career. Nesbeth headed a ball into the box that was then deflected by Louisville's goalkeeper who came off her line. Nesbeth was able to get the rebound just left of the PK spot and knock it into the back of the net.
Nesbeth has started both games this season after only playing in 12 games a season ago with no starts.
"Her fitness, her discipline, her commitment to using her physicality is the difference," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "Last year she came in as a young player and a big star with her national team but had not played at the speed and intensity here. She has quickly learned to adjust her play and demands that are going on here. I thought she played well and I am happy for her to see her knock in the goal but I thought she played well all game."
Florida State had a couple of other looks on goal that would both go off the crossbar, including a free-kick from just outside of the box by sophomore Jenna Nighswonger and another by redshirt senior Clara Robbins.
The 1-0 shutout win marked the 211th shutout in the 374 games coached by Krikorian at FSU.

Soccer Remains Unbeaten Against Virginia Tech with 4-0 Win.
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The second-ranked Florida State soccer team (3-0) has still not lost to Virginia Tech (0-5) as they dominated the Hokies 4-0 on the road Thursday night.
The 4-0 win over VT marks the largest margin of victory over the Hokies in the 21 game series between these two schools. Florida State had never scored more than three goals against Virginia Tech until tonight and this marks the 14th shutout of VT.
It took a while for anything to happen in Blacksburg, Va. as the first Seminole shot was not recorded until the 36th minute by junior Jaelin Howell.
Earlier in the match, the Seminoles did have multiple opportunities coming off set pieces from sophomore LeiLanni Nesbeth. She took her first corner of the game in the 14th minute that would end up going off of the crossbar.
Florida State got off their second shot of the game in the 42nd minute on a shot from redshirt junior Emily Madril, but that would be saved by the VT keeper.
It wasn't until the 44th minute that either team would get on the scoreboard and it wasn't even from a recorded shot. Florida State would get the ball to Jenna Nighswonger on the right side of the box and she would cross it to the freshman Jody Brown in front of the goal. Brown would not have to do anything as it would hit off of a Virginia Tech defender into the back of the net for a VT own goal and a 1-0 FSU lead.
Florida State was more aggressive on offense in the second half, recording 15 shots and that would show on the scoreboard as they resulted in three Florida State goals.
It took until the ninth shot of the second half to convert for the Seminoles, as Jaelin Howell would record her first goal of the season and seventh of her career. The goal would come off of a header on a Nighswonger corner kick.
The Seminoles would strike again in the 76th minute off of another corner. Yujie Zhao would send one into the box that would be headed by Lauren Flynn and then chested into the back of the net by freshman Ran Iwai for the first goal of her career and a 3-0 lead for the Seminoles.
Florida State would complete their third shutout of the season, with their fourth goal of the game, this one coming from Brown on the second goal of her career. Nighswonger would take a shot from 25 yards out that would be deflected right to Brown with no one between her and the goalkeeper and Brown would convert, sealing the Seminole victory.
Offensive Explosion
With 10 goals in the first three ACC games, Florida State broke their previous record of nine goals scored in the team's first three conference games. Those 10 goals have been scored by seven different players, with both Brown and Zhao scoring two goals each.
Six of FSU's 10 goals have been scored from players coming off of the bench.
Unbreakable Defense
Through three games, the Seminoles have only allowed five shots, with two of those on goal. This marks the third time in program history that the Seminoles have recorded three straight shutouts to start ACC play and the fifth time they have recorded three straight shutouts to start the season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The second-ranked Florida State soccer team (4-0) has still not let up a goal through their first four games as they shut out Wake Forest (1-3-1) 4-0 in Winston-Salem.
The win gave the Seminoles their first-ever lead in the all-time series, as they now lead the Demon Deacons 13-12-5.
Florida State came out of the gates attacking, getting their first shot off two and a half minutes into the game and then scored their first of three first half goals in the sixth minute. The Seminoles continued to gets shots off early and often in the second half as they outshot the Demon Deacons 12-1 in the first half with eight of those 12 shots on goal.
It didn't take long for the Seminoles to extend their lead to 2-0 as redshirt junior Emily Madril would score her second goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 12th minute. Redshirt senior Clara Robbins was fouled inside the box as Wake Forest's Sophie Faircloth pushed her in the back as the Noles kicked in a high pass to Robbins.
Nine minutes later junior Kristina Lynch gave FSU a 3-0 first half lead on her first goal of the season on an assist from sophomore Jenna Nighswonger. Lynch would kick the ball along the ground just out of the goalkeeper's outstretched arms and into the bottom right corner.
There was not a lot going on in the second half until the 85th minute when junior Yujie Zhao put the fourth goal on the board for the Seminoles. It was her team-leading third goal of the season and came off of Nighswonger's team-leading third assist.
Florida State also had two good looks from freshman Jody Brown towards the end of the second half but Brown would not convert on either.

Soccer Remains Unbeaten With 4-1 Win over Pitt.
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The second-ranked Florida State soccer team (5-0) remains unbeaten through the first five games with a 4-1 win over Pitt (8-3) during a cold rainy night in Pittsburgh.
Florida State improved to 8-0 all-time against Pitt as FSU has outscored the Panthers 26-2 in their eight meetings.
For the second straight game, the Seminoles got on the board in the first 10 minutes. Sophomore LeiLanni Nesbeth hit one into the back of the net for the third time this season on a rocket from close to 30 yards out. After redshirt senior Malia Berkely dribbled the ball up the middle of the field she turned and passed it out left to Nesbeth. After making a move back towards the center of the field, Nesbeth launched one into the bottom left corner.
For the next 34 minutes, the Seminoles would get off seven more shots with two on goal and would get multiple other good looks. In the 27th minute, junior Kristina Lynch would get a good look after redshirt senior Clara Robbins crossed it into the box after fighting through traffic. Lynch's shot would go just high.
In the 38th minute, freshman Jody Brown had a good look to get her third goal of the season but could not convert as well. Redshirt junior Emily Madril kicked a long ball down the right side of the field to sophomore Heather Payne who then rolled a nice pass to Brown who was one on one with the Pitt goalkeeper. Her shot would go just wide of the right post.
Pitt would tie the game just before the half on a goal from Madison Clayton, assisted by Amanda West in the 45th minute. It was the first goal of the season let up by the Seminoles.
The Seminoles regained the lead in the 56th minute on a goal by Lynch after a lot of confusion by the officials. Malia Berkely kicked a nice ball over the Pitt defense on a set piece to the far post that Lynch was able to redirect with her head into the back of the net. Lynch was called offside originally but the ball hit off a Pitt player's head nullifying the call by the officials and resulting in the FSU goal.
Florida State expanded their lead to 3-1 in the 69th minute on Jenna Nighswonger's second goal of the season. Yujia Zhao played one into Lynch just outside the six-yard box who then passed it back out to Nighswonger at the PK spot and she took a quick strike into the back of the net.
Nighswonger would get the Seminoles on the board for the fourth time with her second goal of the night in the 80th minute. Gabby Carle bombed a pass from just around midfield that would end up at the foot of Brown who would be one on one with a Pitt defender who would make a nice save. Nighswonger would get the rebound at the top of the 18-yard box and chip it over the Pitt defense to give the Noles a 4-1 lead.
Offensive Explosion
With 18 goals in the first five ACC games, Florida State broke their previous record of 14 goals scored in the team's first five conference games. Those 18 goals have been scored by eight different players, with both Brown and Madril both scoring two goals each and Zhao, Nighswonger and Nesbeth all scoring three.
Nine of FSU's 18 goals were scored from players coming off of the bench.

Soccer Wins a High Scoring Affair Over No. 11 Virginia.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The second-ranked Florida State soccer team (6-0) stayed unbeaten after defeating No. 11 Virginia (5-2-1) 4-3 in a high scoring contest. It was a typical Florida State vs. Virginia game as it was decided by a single goal for the 18th time in 24 meetings.
It was Florida State's third win over Virginia in their last five meetings and ninth win in their last 16 meetings. It was also Florida State's second-ever win in Charlottesville.
Sophomore LeiLanni Nesbeth got things started for the Noles as it seems she has all season. She grabbed her fourth goal of the season in the 11th minute of the game. The goal came off of an assist from freshman Kaitlyn Zipay, the first of her career. Redshirt Senior Malia Berkely sparked the offensive possession with a deep pass down the right side of the field to Zipay who then crossed it from the baseline towards the top of the penalty box. Once the ball got to Nesbeth she showed her rocket leg and fired it into the top of the net.
Not even two minutes later the Seminoles extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal from redshirt senior Clara Robbins. It was her first career goal in 52 games played. Junior Jaelin Howell picked the ball up at midfield and pushed it up field before sending it to the middle of the box where Robbins would get a hold of it at the top of the six-yard box and send it into the right side of the goal.
Virginia would bounce back to bring the score within one with their first goal of the game in the 34th minute. The goal was scored by Alexa Spaanstra and was scored on a penalty kick. UVA was pushing the ball up field when senior Gabby Carle fouled Rebecca Jarret inside the 18-yard box resulting in the PK.
Florida State would strike back in the 42nd minute making it 3-1. The third goal of the game for the Noles was an own goal by the Cavaliers that came off of a Yujie Zhao corner kick.
Virginia pulled back within one in the 58th minute on a goal from Diana Ordonez. The goal was assisted by Lizzy Sieracki. It marked the first time this season that the Seminoles had allowed more than one goal in a game.
The Cavaliers tied the match in the 64th minute on a corner kick. Just like the Seminoles' third goal, Virginia's third goal came on a corner kick that resulted in an own goal by FSU.
The tie was broken in the 81st minute on yet another corner kick. Zhao bent one in perfectly from the left corner that would get kicked around a few times before it ended at the feet of Robbins once again. Robbins would find the back of the net for the redshirt senior's second career goal.
The Seminole defense would come through in the final 10 minutes as Florida State would earn their first ranked win of the season over No. 11 Virginia.

Soccer Takes Down No. 5 Duke With a Last Second Goal by Howell.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The second-ranked Florida State soccer team (7-0) stayed unbeaten on Thursday with a 1-0 win over No. 5 Duke (5-3-2).
"I thought our team was resilient," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "Duke came out and challenged us in all kinds of different ways. They created some good chances at our goal and they limited our chances at their goal. Fortunately, in the end, we had enough to get a goal to end the game. We are happy to win again with a shutout against a very good team."
The win over Duke ties the Seminoles second-longest winning streak to start a season with seven straight wins. With today's win, Florida State is now on its second-longest ACC win streak (11) dating back to last season. It is also Florida State's fifth shutout through seven games.
The game was tightly contested on both ends of the ball as it went scoreless until the 90th minute when junior Jaelin Howell scored her second goal of the season on a Yujie Zhao corner kick with 12 seconds left.
"I know our team is super resilient and we stay calm under pressure and that is what we have done all season," said Howell. "I know I believed in the team and the team believed in each other. Ultimately I was on the end of the ball but that was a whole team effort to grind out the win."
"It was a good serve in by Yujie and Emily competed for the ball," said Krikorian. "The ball bounced around and Jaelin got a touch on it and she got a good turn and finish. In those scrums, anything can happen and they could have easily cleared it. Fortunately, we had the right kid in the right spot to finish the chance."
Duke controlled the possession in the first half of the game as they had the ball for 54 percent of the opening half. That did not lead to anything for the Blue Devils as Florida State led in the shots category 7-3. Duke did get two shots on goal but the Seminoles' freshman goalkeeper Cristina Roque was able to come away with saves on both. Roque finished the game with a career-high three saves.
The second half was controlled by FSU as they finished with 55 percent of the possession and outshot Duke 12-1. Florida State came out firing in the second half with six shots in the first 15 minutes, with two of them on frame. Duke's keeper, Ruthie Jones did an impressive job of coming away with four saves on four good Florida State looks.
Florida State finished with 19 shots but only the last one mattered as Howell found the back of the net with 12 seconds on the clock.
Offensive Explosion
With 23 goals in the first seven ACC games, Florida State broke their previous record of 19 goals scored in the team's first seven conference games. Those 23 goals have been scored by nine different players, with Howell, Brown, Madril and Robbins all scoring two goals each and Zhao and Nighswonger both scoring three. Nesbeth leads the team in goals scored with four.
Nine of FSU's 23 goals have been scored from players coming off of the bench. Florida State has scored at least four goals in five of the first seven games this season.
Hot Start in ACC Play
Florida State has started ACC play 7-0 for just the third time in program history. This also marks the fifth time that Florida State has started ACC play unbeaten through the first seven games.
Sharing the Wealth
Through seven games this season, the Seminoles have had nine different players score a goal and 13 players record at least one point. This is the 25th time that the Seminoles have had at least nine different goal scorers in a season.
Shooting Gallery
Florida State has an unprecedented shot advantage over their opponents, as the Seminoles have out-shot their opponents 132-20 through seven games. Florida State has put 58 of those 132 shots on goal (.434) as their opponents have had 13 of their 20 shots on goal. This has led to a 23-4 goal advantage for Florida State.

PERFECTION! Soccer Finishes the Regular Season Unbeaten.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - On a perfect day in front of a capacity crowd, the second-ranked Florida State soccer team (8-0) finished the regular season undefeated with a 2-0 win over No. 3 Clemson (6-3). The win secures the Seminoles at least a share of the regular season ACC Championship.
"Clemson is a really good team," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "They brought a lot of quality to the game. When you are playing against top teams, you are not going to have chance after chance. You are going to get a few chances and when those chances come you are going to have to take advantage of them."
This is the first time in program history that the Seminoles finished the ACC regular season without a blemish as their previous best ACC regular season was in 2014 when the Noles went 9-0-1.
"Going through the ACC without losing a point in the season is a great accomplishment," said Krikorian. "Our kids played really well through the course of the season and to end with Duke and Clemson back-to-back it certainly speaks to the quality we have as well."
The first half was slow as there were only three shots combined by both teams, with all three coming from the Seminoles. All three of those shots were on frame as the Clemson freshman goalkeeper came away with three saves, a new career-high for her. Two of those saves came at the end of the half as freshman Jody Brown was one-on-one with the Clemson keeper but would kick it right at her. Sophomore Jenna Nighswonger would get the rebound and fire it back towards the net but Clemson's Halle Mackiewicz would make an incredible save.
Florida State came out pressing in the second half as they got off a shot just a minute and seven seconds into the half that lead to a corner kick. It would take seven more shots until Florida State found the back of the net.
In the 79th minute, Brown would convert in transition to give Florida State a 1-0 lead. Freshman goalkeeper Cristina Roque quickly threw the ball upfield to junior Yujie Zhao who played a beautiful ball over the Clemson defense to a streaking Brown who would beat the Clemson keeper one-on-one for the third goal of her career.
"She is pretty quick," Krikorian on Brown. "There are a lot of different elements to her game. Certainly, her quickness, her explosion and her speed are all part of it. She is much more than simply an athlete. Her quality to the ball and her ability to escape pressure and finish are pretty good too. We have a big talent in Jody Brown and she showed that today."
With just 30 seconds left in the game, Brown would strike again for her team high tying fourth goal of the season. After the ball bounced around in the middle of the field on an FSU goal kick, Clara Robbins got possession of it and played it to Brown with perfect pace past the Clemson defense. This once again put Brown one-on-one with the freshman Clemson keeper and she made her look silly going right past her and placing the ball in the back of the net.
Offensive Explosion
With 25 goals in the first eight ACC games, Florida State broke their previous record of 21 goals scored in the team's first eight conference games. Those 25 goals have been scored by nine different players, with Howell, Lynch, Madril and Robbins all scoring two goals each and Zhao and Nighswonger both scoring three. Nesbeth and Brown lead the team in goals scored with four.
11 of FSU's 25 goals have been scored from players coming off of the bench. Florida State has scored at least four goals in five of the eight games this season.
Dominant in ACC Play
Florida State finished ACC play without a blemish on their record for the first time in program history. The only other time Florida State finished the ACC regular season unbeaten was in 2014 when the Noles went 9-0-1.
Sharing the Wealth
Through eight games this season, the Seminoles have had nine different players score a goal, and 13 players record at least one point. This is the 25th time that the Seminoles have had at least nine different goal scorers in a season.
Shooting Gallery
Florida State has an unprecedented shot advantage over their opponents, as the Seminoles have out-shot their opponents 144-23 through eight games. Florida State has put 68 of those 144 shots on goal (.472) as their opponents have had 13 of their 23 shots on goal. This has led to a 25-4 goal advantage for Florida State.

They made it difficult for us and they had a lot of numbers behind the ball and a great compact defense. Fortunately for us, we got that first one just before halftime. Full credit to Notre Dame. We played them earlier in the year and we handled them pretty well. As I said to their coach before the game, they have done a great job of improving through the course of the season. I have a lot of respect for them and their program and their players."
With the win, Florida State is now 12-8-4 all-time in the first round of the ACC Tournament. FSU also improved to 13-8-5 in ACC Tournament games played in Cary, N.C.
Florida State dominated the first half, out-shooting the Irish 10-0 with three shots on goal. It was not until the 41st minute that the Seminoles got their first shot on goal from junior Yujie Zhao. It led to a corner and then another shot on goal from freshman Lauren Flynn.
Junior Jaelin Howell finally got the Seminoles on the board in the 45th minute with her third goal of the season. The goal came off of a corner from sophomore Jenna Nighswonger. Howell elevated over the Notre Dame defense to head the ball into the center of the net after the Notre Dame Keeper fell down.
"That is really significant if you can score that goal," said Krikorian. "It changes the feel for the game. It was a great service by Jenna and finish by Jaelin."
The second half was more of the same as FSU dominated on offense, outshooting Notre Dame 7-4. Florida State got off five shots at the beginning of the half with none of them on goal. In the 78th minute, FSU finally got their first shot on goal of the second half. Not only was it on goal it was in the goal as Clara Robbins found the back of the net for the third time this season.
The ball found Robbins at the top of the 18-yard box on a deflection from a Notre Dame defender. After settling the ball at her feet, Robbins fired one into the right side of the net, giving the Seminoles a 2-0 lead.
"Coming back in the second half I thought we controlled the game pretty well and of course Clara's goal from distance made it a little easier," said Krikorian.
Notre Dame would finish the game with a shot in the 88th minute, one of their four for the game, but none of them would be on goal.
The shutout victory over Notre Dame gives Florida State seven shutouts through nine games this season.

Soccer Advances to ACC Championship with 4-0 Win Over No. 6 Duke.
by Bret Clein
CARY, N.C. - The top-seeded Seminole Soccer team (10-0) advanced to the ACC Championship for the 12th time in program history with a 4-0 shutout win over fourth-seed and No. 6 Duke (7-4-2).
"The score was not at all a reflection of the way the game went," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "I thought Duke had a great game plan and fantastic execution. They disrupted our play and made it very difficult for us. In the first half, there was an intensity brought to the game that our kids didn't start with. Credit to our group for being able to hang in there and find a goal."
The Florida State offense exploded, scoring four goals in a game for the sixth time this season. All four goals came from four different student-athletes, with one each from Jody Brown, Jaelin Howell, Kristina Lynch and Jenna Nighswonger. Florida State has now scored 31 goals in 10 games.
The Seminole defense was stellar as well, led by freshman Cristina Roque in goal. The Noles recorded their eighth shutout of 2020. Roque came away with a career-high nine saves. Those nine saves matched the number of saves she had all season leading into the game. The defense was tested facing a season-high 13 shots and 10 on goal but proved why they are considered one of the best in the country by not allowing a goal.
"She is getting better and better and better and honestly we knew she was a talent but she has really grown through the course of the season," said Krikorian on Roque. "She has found a physical part of her game that I was not sure she had coming into the team. There is no one that is going to doubt her with the ball and her technical quality, it is really really good. She is now turning into a competitor which is turning her into a more well-rounded player. She had a very good game and was very competitive and helped us possess the ball."
Duke came out pressing to start the game, getting off an early shot in the third minute that required Roque to make the first of her three first-half saves. Three minutes later, Duke pressured the Seminoles defense but would not get anything from it.
Florida State showed their first threat on offense in the 15th minute when Kirsten Pavlisko passed it to Clara Robbins in the middle who then led LeiLanni Nesbeth perfectly before the Duke keeper got in the way. One minute later, Kristina Lynch made a nice run down the left side of the field before crossing it into the six-yard box, leading to a Kaitlyn Zipay shot. Her shot would be deflected in traffic leading to a Clara Robbins shot that would go over the net.
In the 26th minute, Duke had possibly their best look of the first half on a free kick from 25 yards out. The Blue Devils' Caitlin Cosme launched a shot into the bottom left corner that Roque had to make a diving save to keep out of the goal. Duke would get the rebound but their shot would be blocked by Lauren Flynn.
The Seminoles finally go on the board in the 31st minute on a goal from Jody Brown, the fifth of her freshman campaign. The goal came from a perfect pass from Jenna Nighswonger that led her to the right post. Jody showed her speed and outran the Duke defense and shot it across the face of the Duke keeper into the left side of the net. The play was started by a nice pass from Emily Madril to Nighswonger in the midfield.
Duke came back quick with a corner kick 18 seconds later but would get nothing out of it. In the 44th minute, Duke got off another good shot that had to be saved by Roque in the top right corner. It was her third save of the half, tying her career-high for saves in a game.
The Blue Devils came out pressing once again to start the second half but Florida State made adjustments to limit Duke's pressure. FSU got off a few shots early in the first half including a Howell shot to the bottom left corner of the net that was saved by Duke and another one that went just high.
In the 60th minute, Florida State broke through once again, this time on a corner kick. After not having a single corner in the first half FSU had three in a row, finally leading to a Seminole goal, this one by Howell. Nesbeth served in a nice ball that was deflected by the Duke keeper and wound up at Howell's feet and she was able to give FSU a 2-0 lead. It was her fourth goal of the season, all on corner kicks.
Florida State extended their lead to 3-0 in the 65th minute on a goal from Kristina Lynch. This goal once again came off of a corner kick by LeiLanni Nesbeth. She kicked in a ball to Clara Robbins who headed it back to the center of the six-yard box where Lynch connected for her third goal of the season.
The Seminoles capped off their 4-0 victory with their last goal in the 77th minute by Jenna Nighswonger, her fourth of the season. It was set up by a nice pass from Jaelin Howell to Heather Payne who passed it into Nighswonger just right of the PK spot and she was able to get it by the Duke keeper.
Duke had eight shots in the second half with seven of them on goal but the Seminole defense was stout in keeping them off the board all game.

ACC Champions! Noles Take Down No. 1 North Carolina 3-2.
CARY, N.C. - The top-seeded Seminole Soccer team (11-0) is ACC Champions for the seventh time in program history with a 3-2 win over No. 1 North Carolina (11-1).
Florida State would have five on the All-Tournament team - Clara Robbins, Jaelin Howell, Jenna Nighswonger, Malia Berkey and Cristina Roque. Clara Robbins was named tournament MVP as she finished with three goals and two assists.
Florida State is now 5-3-1 against North Carolina in the ACC Tournament under head coach Mark Krikorian. FSU is 5-1-1 against the Tar Heels in the tournament since 2011.
"There is no one out there that has more respect for what Anson (Dorrance), his staff and his school have done for the growth of women's soccer than I have," said Krikorian. "The opportunity to come in here, in Carolina and play against UNC again in a final is great for us. We were all treated to a very hard-working, competitive game between two good teams. Fortunately, we were able to come out and establish a couple of goals early in the game. Then came out in the second half and scored another goal. For me, I am proud of our team. I thought they played very well and brought the competitive spirit that is necessary to win championships. We feel great that as a conference we got to this point during the time of COVID."
The Seminoles were led on the afternoon by Clara Robbins and LeiLanni Nesbeth who were a part of all three Florida State goals.
The Seminoles jumped out of the gate on fire, scoring two goals in the first six minutes of the game, both by Clara Robbins. It all started one minute and 19 seconds into the game on a corner kick. Kristina Lynch got a hold of the ball in the first minute and pressured the Carolina defense, resulting in a corner kick for FSU just 44 seconds into the game. LeiLanni Nesbeth served in a perfect ball on the corner kick that was deflected by Kristen McFarland before getting to Clara Robbins who would knock it into the back of the goal, giving the Seminoles and early 1-0 lead.
Just four minutes later Robbins would do it again, this time from distance. It was all started by Gabby Carle who possessed the ball on the right side of the field near the midfield line. Carle passed it up the sideline to Nesbeth who cut towards the center of the field before passing it along to Clara Robbins about 25 yards from the net. Robbins would take a few steps before launching a rocket from 20 yards out off of the right post and into the back of the net, giving Florida State a 2-0 lead.
In the 13th minute, the Seminoles would get another corner that would end up on Robbins' head, this time the UNC keeper was able to catch it. North Carolina then pushed the ball down the field to Emily Fox, who would challenge the Florida State defense, eventually leading to a UNC corner kick. The Carolina corner would go off the head of one of their player and just over the right corner.
A few minutes later in the 21st minute, Florida State would get a free-kick from about 25 yards out that would lead to a deep shot from Malia Berkely that would end up right at the UNC keeper.
One minute later, UNC would get its best look of the first half again on a corner kick. Brianna Pinto would get a nice look and fire it into the left side of the net, but guess who was there Clara Robbins. She was able to get a foot on the ball and knock it away.
Florida State would have two more opportunities before the half. In the 39th minute, the Seminoles would get another corner kick that Jaelin Howell would get her head on but was deflected away by the UNC defense. In the 44th minute, Florida State almost made it 3-0 on a cross from Ran Iwai. Her cross rolled by both Jody Brown and Lauren Flynn going off the right post before getting cleared away by the Carolina defense.
The Seminoles came out quickly in the second half to extend their lead to 3-0. Florida State scored just a minute and 12 seconds into the half on a LeiLanni Nesbeth goal, assisted by Clara Robbins. Nesbeth passed it to Robbins who with a one-touch pass got it back to Nesbeth. LeiLanni squeezed the ball between the UNC keeper and the bottom right corner to get her fifth goal of the season.
North Carolina narrowed the FSU lead with a goal in the 59th minute. The goal came on a penalty kick by Rachel Jones after a Kristina Lynch handball in the box lead to the PK.
In the 89th minute, North Carolina would score again to narrow the Seminole lead to one, but that would not be enough as the Seminoles would win 3-2 and their seventh ACC Championship in program history.

Soccer Advances to Round of 16 With 3-0 Win Over Milwaukee.
CARY, N.C. - The top-seeded Florida State soccer team (12-0) opened play in the 2020 NCAA Tournament with a 3-0 win over Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon. The win advances the undefeated Seminoles to the Round of 16.
The first half was slow with the Noles having multiple opportunities taking seven shots at the goal. Three of those shots were on frame as the Milwaukee goalkeeper came away with three saves in the first half of the game.
Florida State came out pressing in the second half as they got off a shot just under two minutes into the half. It would only take one more shot until Florida State found the back of the net.
In the 49th minute, Kristen McFarland got FSU on the board with her first goal of the season on an assist from Cara Robbins.
It would take another seven shots on goal before the Garnet and Gold would get another point on the board. The first one was off a Jenna Nighswonger corner kick where Clara Robbins just missed the top of the net.
The Seminoles piled on in the final minutes of the game starting in the 76th minute as Gabby Carle scored off a Nighswonger corner kick. It was the first goal of the season for the senior and gave Florida State a 2-0 lead.
In the 79th minute, just three minutes after the previous goal, Jaelin Howell found the back of the net to secure the 3-0 Florida State victory over Milwaukee.

Soccer Advances to the Elite 8 With 3-1 Win Over Penn State.
CARY, N.C. - The top-seeded Florida State soccer team (13-0) advanced to the Elite 8 for the third straight season and 15th time in program history with a 3-1 win over Penn State (12-3-1).
Florida State is now 14-2-1 all-time in the round of 16 of the NCAA Tournament and 66-17-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
The Seminoles dominated the first half, outshooting Penn State 18-2 but the Seminoles trailed for the first time all season when the Nittany Lions scored in the 20th minute. Penn State took advantage of Emily Madril slipping as Frankie Tagliaferri put one in the back of the net off of assists from Ally Schlegel and Sam Coffey.
It took Florida State 13 shots but they finally converted in the 31st minute. Yujie Zhao served in a perfect corner kick that found Kristina Lynch then the back of the net to tie the game at one. It was Lynch's fourth goal of the season and Zhao's fourth assist.
Florida State got off four shots and two corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of the second half. The Noles then grabbed their first lead of the afternoon in the 62nd minute on a goal from Clara Robbins, her team leading sixth of the season. Gabby Carle entered the box from the left side and passed it to the top of the box where Robbins fired a shot into the right side of the net.
Seven minutes later the Garnet and Gold put the game out of reach after Gabby Carle scored her second goal of the tournament, this one on a penalty kick.

Soccer Advances to College Cup on PKs, 5-3, Over Duke.
CARY, N.C. - The top-seeded Florida State soccer team (13-0-1) advanced to the College Cup for the 11th time in program history after defeating ninth-seeded Duke (12-5-4), 5-3, in PKs.
"I thought Duke had a wonderful game plan and their kids executed it to perfection," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "It was clear that they were trying to minimize our opportunities at goal and they did a really good job at that. I thought our kids stayed disciplined throughout without giving much at our goal."
The Seminoles dominated possession of the ball the entire game but could not get a ball in the back of the net through 110 minutes of action. Florida State outshot Duke 14-2 and had possession of the ball for 74 percent of the game. Duke's only two shots came in the first seven minutes of the game and neither was on goal.
Sunday's game was the first time that Florida State played in a game that went into PKs since 2018 when FSU defeated USC 5-4 in PKs to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Seminoles went on to win the National Championship that season.
Duke had an early advantage over Florida State after the Blue Devils got off shots in the second and seventh minutes. That would be all for Duke as they would not get a shot off for the rest of the game.
Florida State got off their first of three shots in the first half in the 20th minute when Clara Robbins put a shot on frame. Again in the 25th minutes, the Seminoles got a shot on goal, this time from Yujie Zhao.
The Garnet and Gold took seven more shots in the second half with four on goal but Ruthie Jones of Duke continued to keep the Seminoles off the board.
FSU had chances in overtime with four shots between the two overtimes but again could not convert, sending the game into penalty kicks.
Freshman goalkeeper Cristina Roque came up huge in PKs, deflecting Duke's Taylor Mitchell in the first round. That was all FSU needed as they would convert on all five PKs, sending FSU to the College Cup.
"That was a big save," said Krikorian. "She guessed right and got to it and that was the difference. All of our shooters stepped up and finished their chances pretty well."

FSU Soccer Headed To The National Championship Following Another PK Shootout.
CARY, N.C. - For the second straight match, the top-ranked FSU soccer team was held scoreless for 110 minutes in regulation by an ACC foe. And for the second consecutive match freshman goalkeeper Christina Roque came up with a brilliant performance in net. The Winter Garden, Fla. native saved two Virginia PKs, and five shots in regulation, to send FSU to the College Cup final where it will chase its third national title in seven years.
For a team that was not shutout in any match during the fall 2020 campaign, FSU was held without a goal once again Thursday evening but just as it did versus Duke, the Seminoles were perfect from the spot and leaned on Roque to advance in the tournament. The Seminoles converted all three of the PKs they took and Roque made two saves to win the shootout 3-0. It was the seventh straight PK shoot out win for the Seminoles in the postseason who are now 9-1 in shootouts under Head Coach Mark Krikorian.
"She sure doesn't play like a freshman does she," said Krikorian about Roque. "I thought that when we needed her to stand tall and have those big moments she sure did. She did quite well with the penalties also but a couple big saves through the course of play and showed confidence and was reassuring to her teammates. I thought, again, she had a very good performance."
"Just knowing that my team is behind me no matter what, just coming out and playing the best I can and we train super hard," said Roque when asked about the success she is having as a true freshman. "We just have to show it on the field every time and I think we'll be successful."
After not playing a single overtime game all season, Florida State was forced into extra time for a second straight match Thursday. The Cavaliers held FSU to a season-low seven shots through regulation and FSU forced just one save from the UVA keeper in the first 90 minutes despite an 8-3 edge in corners.
Virginia had the edge in opportunities on goal throughout the first half. The Cavaliers had one dangerous chance off the underneath of the crossbar that just stayed out of the net and another that forced Roque into a diving save off a header lofted towards the upper 90 at the far post.
With just under 3:00 remaining in the half, UVA had another chance with a free kick from 20 yards out but once again Roque came up with the save on a low-driven shot right at the keeper. The Seminoles ended the first half with just one shot, its lowest total in the first half this season, compared to six for the Cavaliers of which four were on goal.
"All the credit goes to Swanny (Virginia Head Coach Steve Swanson) and the Virginia kids and their commitment to go and play and battle," said Krikorian. "I thought they really took it to us in the first half like no one else has this year. I thought we were fortunate to come out 0-0."
With just under a minute gone in the second half, Roque was called on once again to keep the game level. Virginia had an opportunity on goal off a turnover and once again drove a shot low to the far post but the freshman keeper was up to the task.
Florida State, following back-to-back corners, had one of its best opportunities of the match in the 57th minute. Kristen McFarland had a look at the net from the penalty spot but with the UVA defense closing in on her, the shot went just wide of the target. That was followed by another chance for the Noles off the foot of Clara Robbins but once again the chance was just wide of the net.
In the 65th minute Jody Brown created an opportunity for FSU as the Jamaican national made a run to the end line and sent a ball to the near post where McFarland was waiting but the redshirt-senior was unable to redirect the pass on frame.
In the 70th minute Yujie Zhao created another chance to break the scoreless draw. The junior worked her way from the wing into the 18 and fired a shot low to the far post but UVA's keeper was able to handle the chance as the Seminoles continued to apply pressure.
With under 14:00 remaining, Brown once again got around a UVA defender on the end line and put another dangerous ball in front of the net but nobody for Florida State was home to get a foot on the pass.
Virginia had one of its best opportunities to take the lead in the second half with just over 12:00 remaining in regulation. Rebecca Jarret, who had been a thorn in the Seminoles in the first 45 minutes, got a look on goal but once again drove a shot right at Roque who handled the chance.
In the first minute of the first overtime, Gabby Carle had a good look on goal from outside the 18 but was unable to put the shot on frame. Virginia had a chance of their own with just 2:00 gone in the second overtime as a header was put on frame forcing Roque to make her fifth save of the match.
Florida State will face the winner of No. 2 North Carolina and No. 11 Santa Clara for the National Championship. The College Cup final is scheduled for Monday at 5:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN2.
"I feel great to move on and have a chance to compete in the National Championship," said Krikorian. "Whether it's against (UNC Head Coach) Anson (Dorrance) and his legendary program or (Santa Clara Head Coach) Jerry Smith, so much history and so many great teams from Santa Clara. Whichever team it is, we know it's going to be a great game."

Clara Robbins received the ball at the top left corner of the 18-yard box and passed it to the top of the box to Yujie Zhao. Santa Clara rebounded to tie things up in the 84th minute. Kelsey Turnbow scored her 10th goal of the season after scoring from 11 yards out on a one-on-one opportunity with Cristina Roque. Turnbow received the ball after an FSU turnover.
