Soccer Takes Care of TCU with a 2-0 Win on Opening Day.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Coming off a national championship a season ago, the top ranked Florida State soccer team (1-0-0) took care of business at home with a 2-0 win over TCU (0-1-0).

"That was our first game against a strong opponent and we have to feel good," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "That TCU team is going to go on to win a lot of games and I thought, for the most part, our kids did a great job of containing the threat on goal."

In front of 1,500 fans at the Seminole Soccer Complex, the Noles controlled the game for all 90 minutes, outshooting the Horned Frogs 21 to 3 en route to their opening day victory. It improves head coach Mark Krikorian's record at home during the opening game to 9-0-0.

The ball floated around the field until TCU got the first shot off in the 15th minute. The ball was then possessed mostly by Florida State until the 18th minute when freshman Heather Payne recorded her first career goal on her first career shot after a free-kick from senior Deyna Castellanos.

"Her goal was a fantastic goal," said Krikorian. "The background she has is as a forward. When she had her moment she capitalized. It was a great finish."

With a goal in her first career game, she is the first Seminole freshman to do so since Deyna Castellanos did in 2016 against Texas A&M.

Shortly after TCU retaliated with their second of three shots, this one saved by redshirt senior Caroline Jeffers.

Coming out of the second half, the Noles continued to maintain possession with two early shots by freshman Jenna Nighswonger who played 82 minutes and recorded three shots.

The TCU defense could hold no longer when Castellanos recorded her first goal of the season and 37th of her career in the 58th minute. Castellanos is now three goals away from moving into a tie for third in goals in a career at FSU.

"Dayna played like a pro today," said Krikorian. "She managed the game and helped us in so many ways besides scoring a beautiful goal. The maturity she is starting to show and getting prepared for the next level is great. She has come in and worked hard."

The Seminole defense wrapped up the game, constricting TCU to just one shot in the second half for their first shutout of the season.

Soccer Improves to 2-0 After an Overtime Win Against the Badgers of Wisconsin.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In a physical battle, the top-ranked Florida State soccer team (2-0-0) came away with a 1-0 victory over the No. 16 Wisconsin Badgers (1-1-0). Redshirt Junior Malia Berkely came away with the golden goal with just over a minute left in the first overtime.

"You really hope you're going to be in midseason form in the first weekend of the year, but you know you're not going to be," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "Part of it was the quality of Wisconsin. I don't know if there are any teams in the country that are more organized or better coached than they are."

The Noles maintained possession for 71 percent of the game but Wisconsin came away with eight shots, including four on goal. The Badgers took advantage when they had the ball outshouting Florida State four to three in the first half. Redshirt senior Caroline Jeffers came up big on those four shots, recording three saves and keeping the game scoreless.

"Caroline is a steady kid. I've said it from the beginning," Krikorian said. "She's steady in goal, she's in the right positioning, she follows her script and she does all the little things properly and makes it a little easier for the rest of her team."

The Garnet and Gold picked up the offense in the second half, getting off 11 shots, including three from sophomore Yujie Zhao and three from freshman Jenna Nighswonger. Even with all of those shot attempts, it was not enough as the game was tied at the end of regulation.

Just over eight minutes into the first overtime, Berkely had enough and launched a shot from around 25 yards that landed in the back of the net to give Florida State their second win of the early season. Her goal was assisted by freshman Heather Payne, for her first assist of the season after scoring a goal in the game against TCU on Thursday.

"I'm not sure there's anyone in the world who wouldn't claim that for their own goal," FSU head coach Mark Krikorian said. "That was a top-class strike."

Soccer Falls 2-1 to No. 4 UCLA.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Florida State (2-1-0) suffered their first loss of the season to No. 4 UCLA (34-0-0) 2-1 on Thursday night at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles.

"I thought in the first half we didn't compete well enough," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "They are a really good team that has a lot of good and clever players. If you let them dictate the tempo of the game, it could be a long game. In the first half, we didn't bring our A-game and if you don't bring that to any game I am not sure you deserve to win. Credit to them for doing what they needed to do to score the goals and win the games."

UCLA came out of the gates hot shooting eight shots in the first half to Florida State's one. Those eight shots resulting in two Burin goals.

Early in the first half UCLA got an early header on goal and followed that up with a quick shot right after, both saved by FSU redshirt senior Caroline Jeffers. Six minutes later in the 13th minute UCLA connected getting their first goal of the half.

UCLA got another good look on goal in the 29th minute but Jeffers came up big denying the shot on the free-kick. Five minutes later in the 34th minute, UCLA's Jessie Fleming connected on her second goal of the match.

The Noles came out firing in the second half with an early shot by sophomore Jaelin Howell. FSU came up with a good look in the 55th minute as freshman Jenna Nighswonger led senior Deyna Castellanos right of the middle but she could not handle the ball in the six-yard box.

"We talked about making sure we put our finest effort out," said Krikorian. "We have a lot of good players too and these games are going to be won and lost by technical ability as well as mentality. In the second half, our kids competed a little more favorably and fought a little harder and gave us a chance to get back in the game."

Nighswonger followed that up a minute later with a shot of her own that was on target and led to a Castellanos corner kick that was kicked around close to the goal but resulted in nothing.

In the 61st minute, UCLA had another good look but Jeffers made one of her 9 saves in the match.

Florida State finally got on the board in 75th minute on a strike from Howell. Nighswonger passed it in from just at the 18-yard box as Howell turned and fired it into the left side of the net to make it 1-2.

UCLA had another great chance in the 82nd minute but Jeffers made a save and junior Gabby Carle cleared it before the Bruins could get to it.

Florida State could not make anything happen in the final eight minutes as UCLA went on to win 2-1.

Soccer Falls in Overtime 3-2 to No. 5 USC.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Florida State (2-2-0) earned their second consecutive loss in California as they fell 3-2 to No. 5 USC (4-0-0) in overtime.

The Seminoles fell behind early after a USC goal just 34 seconds into the game. Florida State had the ball on the kickoff before turning it over leading to a USC fast break and their first goal of the afternoon.

"I don't think we came out well either day this week," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "Against UCLA they imposed themselves early in the game and today we let up a goal in the first minute of the game on our own kickoff. That is something I need to look at and we need to fix. We can't be giving up goals on our kickoff in the first minute of the game. I thought we responded really well. At the end of the day, USC is a really good team and they are going to win a lot of games. They were better than us today."

USC threatened just a minute later before redshirt senior Caroline Jeffers jumped on the ball to stop the USC run. The Noles then began to maintain possession as sophomore Yujie Zhao got shots off in the fourth and sixth minute.

Florida State got on the board in the 11th minute after freshman Jenna Nighswonger, a California native, got her first career goal off an assist by senior Deyna Castellanos.

Seven minutes later USC took back the lead after Tara McKeown earned her second goal of the match. After that, the two teams exchanged possessions with not much happening before halftime.

USC had some early chances in the second half but Jeffers earned a diving save in the 49th minute and Castellanos broke up a one-on-one in the 56th minute.

Four minutes after that Castellanos hit the equalizer from way outside as she fired a rocket into the top left corner of the net for her second goal of the season.

The two teams continued to exchange possessions as regulation came to an end and the game headed to overtime. Florida State came into the game with a 1-0-0 record in overtime after defeating Wisconsin at home a week ago.

Things would not end the same as the Trojans would get the game-winning goal in the 98th minute of the first overtime.

"If you don't come to play 90 minutes or more against a good team you are probably not going to win," said Krikorian. "No matter who it is that you play, your opponent deserves your best effort. We have great upside and we are going to get better but we still have a way to go."

Florida State Earns a 2-1 Thrilling win over Florida.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - In front of 3,154 people, the fourth-largest crowd in program history, the No. 6 Florida State soccer team and the Florida Gators put on a thrill for the crowd.

"Today was more about coming out fully prepared and ready to compete against a really good team and I thought we did that," FSU head coach Mark Krikorian said. "That was the number one goal because I thought against UCLA and USC, we didn't do go out and compete as well as we need to. I thought tonight we brought it very, very well and overall, I think it was a good performance start to finish with limited hiccups here and there."

For the third straight season, the Seminoles (3-2) took down the Gators (2-3) to tie the all-time series at 13 apiece.

"Any time you're playing a group like Florida and you win, it's a great feeling," Krikorian said."They're a very, very good team. They're going to win a lot of games and it was a hard-fought contest."

Florida State had some early attempts on goal as Deyna Castellanos and Yujie Zhao got shots off in the first five minutes but could not connect.

In the 25th and 27th minutes, Florida had corners but nothing came out of them. Coming out of the water break, Jaelin Howell fired a shot on a good look but was just a little bit high.

With under 30 seconds left in the first half Jenna Nighswonger got a great look on goal but once again was just high as the ball landed in the top of the net.

Coming out of half Florida took a 1-0 advantage with a goal from Tess Sapone in the 53rd minute.

The Seminoles bounced right back with a goal just over four minutes later. Kristen McFarland scored her second goal of the rivalry as she scored the game-winning a season ago. The Florida goalie stopped playing as the ball was live and McFarland got control and put it in the back of the net for the equalizer.

"McFarland's a warrior. She comes out and competes, does her best every time," Krikorian said. "She's the kind of kid that every coach loves because you know you're going to get the best effort and she was rewarded with hard work again today."

The Seminoles had a few more chances with a free-kick from the corner by Castellanos in the 60th minute and a Castellanos shot off a Zhao corner in the 66th minute.

Florida State took their first lead of the match in the 71st minute on Zhao's first goal coming off of Jaelin Howell's first assist of the season.

Things got interesting in the 80th minute after there was a red card on FSU goalie Caroline Jeffers, leading to a Florida Penalty Kick. Brooke Bollinger came into the game cold of the bench and made an amazing save laying out to her right.

"It was a lot of chaos at first, a lot of nerves," Bollinger said of her thought process in the hectic situation. "But as soon as I got in, I was confident and just ready."

For the next 10 minutes, the Seminoles played keep away not allowing the Gators to tie it up. With the win, Florida State tied the all-time series at 13.

Soccer Takes Care of Business Winning 6-0 Over Samford.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - After a battle Friday night against in-state rival Florida, the No. 6 Florida State soccer team (4-2) took care of business on Sunday afternoon with a 6-0 win against Samford (2-2-2).

"We came out and had a good start to the game," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "We had a good level of concentration throughout the whole game and scored some good goals. We played some pretty good soccer today and gave everyone a chance to play today."

The Seminoles last scored six goals in 2015 when they defeated UNC Greensboro 6-0 on the road. Of those six goals today, five of them were scored by different Seminoles, including two by Jaelin Howell, her second and third of the season.

Florida State came out firing with a Deyna Castellanos shot under two minutes into the game. The two teams then exchanged six fouls before FSU had a corner kick in the 14th minutes.

Clara Robbins got a shot off but once again Samford's goalkeeper, Morgan McCaslan, earned her second of five saves.

The Garnet and Gold got off three more shots before they finally landed one in the back of the net in the 22nd minute. For the second game in a row, Kristen McFarland scored, coming off assists by Clara Robbins and Yujie Zhao.

Kristina Lynch expanded the Seminole lead to two with her first goal in the 25th minute and Abbey Newton followed that up a minute later with her first goal of the season to make it 3-0.

Jaelin Howell earned her first of two goals this game in the 28th minutes coming off an assist from Castellanos, her third of the season.

Florida State came out firing in the second half as well, scoring in 50th and 51st minute of the game.

Castellanos was first scoring an unassisted goal for her third of the season. Howell scored one just over a minute later for her third of the season as well, both team highs. Castellanos assisted on both of Howell's goals, giving her a team-high four assists.

The Seminoles held Samford without a shot for all 90 minutes as they recorded 18 shots of their own. FSU played 19 of 20 active players in today's game, all earning double-digit minutes.

Soccer Pulls Out A 3-2 Win Over No. 24 Colorado in Overtime.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - In a very physical game that saw over 20 fouls, eight yellow cards and a red card the Seminole came away victorious, 3-2, with their second ranked win of the season over No. 24 Colorado (6-1-0).

Freshman Jenna Nighswonger came away with two goals to lift the Noles to their fifth victory of the season.

"We know that Jenna is a special talent," head coach Mark Krikorian said. "All through the recruiting process, the thing that we really liked about her was that what you saw tonight is what we saw in the recruiting process. When the game is on the line, she's the one that's going to change the game. She stepped forward today in a big moment and buried the very good finish at the end."

Colorado got a few early yellow cards with one in the 22nd minute and one in the 25th minute. The yellow card on Kayleigh Webb in 25th minute caused the Colorado bench to erupt, resulting in a yellow card on their head coach and a red card on their assistant.

The Seminoles (5-2-0) then fell behind midway through the second half after Taylor Kornieck's first of two goals. Stephanie Zuniga fired in a corner kick in from the right side and Kornieck won the battle in the air heading it into the top of the net.

Just three minutes later Kristen McFarland got fouled in the box resulting in a Deyna Castellanos penalty kick. Castellanos converted for her fourth goal of the season to tie the match at one.

Coming out of the second half the Seminoles got their first lead of the game in the 60th minute, once again on a penalty kick. This time Gloriana Villalobos got fouled inside the box. Nighswonger got the chance on the penalty kick this time converting on her second goal of the season.

A Heather Payne foul in the 65th minute resulted in another penalty kick, this one for Colorado and Taylor Kornieck. She got her second goal of the game to tie it up at two.

The Buffaloes got their sixth yellow card of the game in the 70th minute. Castellanos followed that up with a shot in the 71st minutes and then a Colorado shot in the 76th minute.

Florida State got off five more of their 27 shots but could not convert as they went into their third overtime game of the season.

In overtime, the Seminoles came out firing with three shots in the first six minutes. In the 100th minute, the game was still tied as Gabby Carle made a run into the box and dropped it off to Nighswonger for her third goal of the season and first game-winner with 12 seconds left on the clock in the first overtime.

Soccer Caps Off Non-Conference Play with Shutout of Villanova.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - No. 6 Florida State soccer (6-2-0) wrapped up non-conference play Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 win over Villanova (3-3-1).

"I thought overall it was a good solid game for us," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "We played against a really well coached organized team that played some really attractive soccer. For us coming on the road and finding a win to end the non-conference segment of the season is good. We will now turn our attention to the ACC."

For the second time, this season the Noles put at least five on the board with the 5-0 shutout of the Wildcats. FSU outshot Villanova 27-5 with 12 of their 27 shots on goal.

The Noles got their first shot off in the seventh minute as Malia Berkely got one on goal but it was saved. 30 seconds later the Seminoles were fouled in the box resulting in a penalty kick taken by Abbey Newton. Newton converted for her second goal of the season to get the Seminoles on the board.

Over the next 15 minutes, FSU got six shots off but could not convert. They finally capitalized in the 22nd minutes on Yujie Zhao's first of two goals, this one assisted by Jenna Nighswonger.

Florida State came out with two shots in the first two minutes of the second half before converting on their third goal in the 53rd minute. Deyna Castellanos got her team-leading fifth goal on assists from Abbey Newton and Jenna Nighswonger.

In the 62nd minute, Zhao put the Noles up 4-0 with her second goal of the afternoon. It was her third of the season and made her the third Seminole to have a multi-goal game in 2019.

Malia Berkely scored her second goal of the season in the 74th minute to cap off the Seminole scoring fest.

The Seminoles have now outscored their opponents 14-3 in their last four appearances.

Soccer Lights Up Scoreboard Against Boston College to Begin ACC Play.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - No. 6 Florida State soccer (7-2-0, 1-0-0) began ACC play with a thrilling 5-4 win over Boston College (7-1-1, 0-1-0).

"In the end, it proved that we are reasonably resilient," FSU head coach Mark Krikorian said. "Our kids fought hard and found a way to come away with a win. Credit to Boston College. They took advantage of mistakes that we made and generated enough attack to score four goals. Coming in here and scoring four goals against us is pretty good."

The Seminoles were highlighted by Jenna Nighswonger and Deyna Castellanos on the attack. Nighswonger came away with two goals for her second multi-goal game of the season, while Castellanos earned three assists to tie a school record.

"She has so many wonderful, special qualities," said Krikorian on Castellanos. "Every time she's on the ball, something exciting could happen. She could score a fantastic goal, a simple goal or she could create for one of her teammates like she did tonight."

Boston College struck first in the 11th with a goal by Sam Smith coming off of a corner kick. That came after the Seminoles were being outshot 3-1 early in the game.

FSU came back firing taking eight straight shots before Castellanos fired a long ball down the center to Kristen McFarland for the first goal of the game for the Seminoles in the 27th minute. It was McFarland's third of the season.

The Seminoles then took their first lead of the match in the 38th minute on Makala Thomas's first goal of her career, coming off assists from Gabby Carle and Leilanni Nesbeth.

Two minutes later the BC tied it back up with a goal by Gianna Mitchell coming off of another corner kick.

Coming out of the half the Noles hit the back of the net again in the 54th minute on Nighswongers first of two goals. Once again Boston College countered with Sam Smith's second goal of the game in the 62nd minute.

In the 68th minute, Gabby Carle scored her first goal of the season and third of her career coming off of Castellanos' second assist of the game to make it 4-3. Two minutes later Nighswonger extended the lead with her second goal of the game to tie the team-high with five goals this season.

BC clawed back with a goal in the 86th minute to make it 5-4 but couldn't get the equalizer as the Noles went on to win their ACC opener.

Soccer Wins Top-10 Battle at No. 9 Clemson.

CLEMSON, S.C. - The No. 6 Florida State soccer team (8-2-0) defeated No. 9 Clemson (7-1-1) 2-1 in Clemson, S.C. in a top-10 battle on Thursday night.

"I thought that our effort was outstanding today," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "We combined some really good soccer at times with a really good mentality. We came out and competed hard against a really good team that is very competitive and it was a hard fought win."

The Noles were led offensively by Deyna Castellanos and Yujie Zhao, both recording a goal and assist of their own. Castellanos' stellar offensive performance recording one goal and one assist moves her into third all-time at FSU with 103 points.

The Noles got off their first shot of the game in the second minute on a Jenna Nighswonger shot that was blocked. Their next shot was their first goal. It came in the 11th minute from Yujie Zhao, her fourth of the season. Malia Berkely and Deyna Castellanos recorded the assists.

Six minutes later the Garnet and Gold made it 2-0 on Castellanos team leading sixth goal of the season on assists from Zhao and Abbey Newton.

Clemson finally got some offense put together at the end of the half with two corners and three shots resulting in their first goal of the game in the 44th minute. The goal scored by Maliah Morris was unassisted and came off a scramble after a corner kick.

Not much was going for either team in the second half as neither team really threatened on the offensive end FSU finished with two shots in the second half, while the Tigers only recorded one.

Clemson made a run in the 83rd minutes that was broken up by Gabby Carle leading to two straight Clemson corners. Those corners were cleared by the Noles.

The Noles held off the Tigers for the remaining of the second half leading to their third ranked win of the season and first over a top-10 season.

Soccer Takes Down Syracuse 1-0.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The No. 6 Florida State soccer team (9-2-0) defeated Syracuse (2-6-2) 1-0 in New York on Sunday afternoon.

"Syracuse had a very good game plan and they executed it very well," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "They made us rush and we missed too many passes and didn't finish our chances. If that is going to be the case it is going to be hard to score goals. We will go back and keep working at and hopefully, we will get a little bit better."

The Seminoles squeezed the Orange in Syracuse, possessing the ball for 70 percent of the game. Florida State recorded just one goal, but that was all they needed to come out of Syracuse with a win.

Deyna Castellanos recorded her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 75th minute to give her 43 in her career, one shy of moving into a tie for second place at FSU. The goal came on an assist from Yujie Zhao, her third of 2019.

Florida State had control the whole game as they maintained possession for 70 percent of the game. The Noles outshot the Orange 23-2 with all eight corner kicks in the game.

In the first half, the Seminoles had 11 shots with five of those on goal. Jaelin Howell led the Seminoles' first-half charge with four shots, two on goal. Malia Berkely was not far behind with three shots of her own and two on goal.

Brooke Bollinger made her third start of the season and fourth appearance. She has not allowed a goal in all 281 minutes she has played in 2019 and for 390 minutes dating back to last season. She recorded two saves this afternoon to tie her season-high that she had against Villanova.

Soccer Takes Down Pittsburgh, 1-0, at Home.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 6 Florida State soccer team (10-2-0, 4-0-0) took down Pitt (3-6-3, 0-2-2) 1-0 at home during the annual Paint-it Pink game.

"We come out against all these ACC teams and they are good teams," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "They are well-coached and have good game plans. They did a great job of executing it and fortunately, we were able to score an early goal and we were able to control a lot of the game. We gave up a couple of chances that we should not have given up. Overall, it is three points and now we get ourselves ready for Virginia Tech."

The Seminoles got on the board early, scoring 1:35 into the game. Kristina Lynch got fouled inside the box leading to a penalty kick. Abbey Newton stepped up and connected firing it into the right side of the net for the game's only goal. It was Newton's third of the season.

The Seminoles dominated the first half, taking 13 shots to Pittsburgh's one but the Noles could only get one to fall. The Seminoles had a chance in the seventh minute after Malia Berkely got a shot deflected, leading to a Kristen McFarland shot that was saved.

In the 25th minute, Jenna Nighswonger got off another good shot for the Garnet and Gold on a free-kick but it bounced off the left post. The Noles had a few more shots to round out the first half but only had three on goal.

Nothing much was going for either team in the second half as the Noles dominated time of possession, holding onto the ball for 72 percent of the game. Pitt had their best chance of the game in the 62nd minute on a shot from Anna Rico that was saved by Caroline Jeffers. Jeffers held the Panthers off the board for the ninth shutout of her career.

Soccer Downs No. 20 Virginia Tech in Overtime.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The No. 5 Florida State soccer team (11-2-0) improved to 5-0 in the ACC with their fourth-ranked win, this time over No. 20 Virginia Tech (9-3-1) in Blacksburg in a double-overtime affair, 3-2.

"It is exactly what we expected from Virginia Tech," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "They are very organized and very hard working. They have a lot of good players and we feel very good to come on the road and come away with three points here in Blacksburg. It is not easy coming here and winning, that is for sure."

The Noles surrendered the first goal for the fifth time this season but that did not matter as they would go on to win 3-2 in overtime on their way to their 11th win of 2019. Deyna Castellanos put the Noles on the board first with her eighth goal of the season and the 44th of her career. Makala Thomas gave the Noles their first lead of the game in the 57th minute on her second goal of the season but Leilanni Nesbeth sealed the deal for the Noles in the 106th minute on her first career goal.

Florida State got two early corners in the 5th minute but could not get anything out of them. Virginia Tech came back down the field to score their first goal of the game in the 10th minute on an unassisted goal from Molly Feighan.

The Garnet and Gold bounced back getting several good looks on goal but did not convert until the 18th minute. Castellanos recorded the 44th goal of her career to move into a tie for second all-time at FSU. The goal came off of a cross from Yujie Zhao that was then headed by Thomas to Castellanos.

FSU got several other looks but went into the half tied 1-1 with an advantage in shots and corner kicks.

Florida State was not messing around in the second half, coming out with two early shots by Malia Berkely and Castellanos. In the 57th minute, the Noles broke the tie with Thomas's second goal of the season. It came off of a Kristen McFarland drive from the right side and a pass across the box.

Virginia Tech would tie the game back up with a goal in the 78th minute from Allyson Brown on a cross from Grace Sklopon. Neither team would be able to break the tie as the game would head to overtime.

The Noles dominated possession in the first overtime but only got off one shot. In the second overtime, FSU took three shots, with the last one being the winner. It came in the 106th minute from Leilanni Nesbeth, the first of her career.

Soccer Falls to No. 1 Virginia In Overtime.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 5 Florida State soccer team (11-3-0) dropped their first ACC game of the season on Sunday afternoon as they fell to top-ranked Virginia (11-0-3) 1-0 in doubles overtime.

"I thought that both groups competed very favorably," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "We had two really good teams out here on a really warm day and both teams brought their best effort but at the end of the day, Virginia made one more play than we did and they scored the goal. Credit to them. They are a good team and I have a lot of respect for them. Good for them for coming in here and winning the game, but we will come back and reevaluate things and hopefully be better."

The two teams were evenly matched the entire game as the Seminoles maintained possession for 54 percent of it. FSU also led in shots with a 14-10 advantage. None of that mattered at the Cavaliers came away with the win in the second overtime on a goal from Meghan McCool, her ninth of the season.

"I thought that our quality around the goal was not good enough," said Krikorian. "There were enough times that we picked up balls in dangerous spots and if we were a little more efficient we probably could have gotten ourselves a goal. In fairness to Virginia, they got themselves some pretty good looks around goal as well. We are going to have to button that up a little more in terms of our defending but overall we just have to be a little better."

The two teams both came away with three shots in the first half as Caroline Jeffers came away with two saves on those three shots. The second half was a lot more of the same as Jeffers came away with three saves on six shots for one of her top performances of the season.

"I thought Caroline was quite good today and made a lot of very good saves," said Krikorian. "She was called upon to do a little more today than she typically has been but that is why you have the goalkeeper there. She had a very good game today."

The Noles had a few good looks on goal throughout the game as Jenna Nighswonger finished with three shots, all on goal, and Yujie Zhao finished with five. In overtime, the Noles had opportunities but could not convert. Virginia, with the only shot in overtime by either team, was able to put one in the back of the net in the 104th minute for the game's only goal. The goal was scored by Meghan McCool and was assisted by Anna Sumpter and Courtney Petersen on a corner kick.

Soccer Shuts Out Miami, 3-0.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 6 Florida State soccer team (12-3-0, 6-1-0) took care of business against in-state rival Miami (4-7-2, 1-5-1) at home on Friday night. The Seminoles earned their seventh shutout of the season with the 3-0 win in the rain.

"I thought that, overall, our composure and patience with the ball was quite good," FSU head coach Mark Krikorian said. "A lot of good build-up play, good attacking play. Maybe with a little bit better finishing, the game would have come easier to us."

Florida State was led by a host of players on offense as the Noles got goals from three different players on three different assisters.

Yujie Zhao got things started for the Noles with her fifth goal of the season coming in the 10th minute. Her goal came off of a rebound on a Kristen McFarland shot.

The Seminoles kept taking shots as they got shots from Deyna Castellanos and Jenna Nighswonger in the 14th and 15th minute. Florida State finished the half with seven shots to Miami's one taking their sixth lead into the half this season.

The Garnet and Gold are now 8-0 when scoring first this season and 6-0 when leading at halftime.

Florida State came out firing in the second half getting off seven shots in the first 20 minutes after having seven in all of the first half. The Seminoles 15th shot of the game then hit the back of the net. The goal came off of a Malia Berkely corner kick that was headed into the six-yard box by Jaelin Howell and then put away by Heather Payne. It was Payne's second goal of the season and first since the first game of the year.

Five minutes later FSU extended their lead to 3-0 with Kristina Lynch's second goal of the season coming off of an Abbey Newton assist.

The Seminoles held Miami to just three shots making it the seventh time this season that the Noles have held their opponent at five or fewer shots or fewer. This game was also the Noles fourth win by more than one goal this season and first ACC game decided by more than one goal.

"From a defending point of view, we really limited the opportunities at our goal and that's certainly always the goal," Krikorian said.

Soccer Falls to No. 3 North Carolina.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In a Physical battle, the No. 5 Florida State Soccer team (12-4-0, 6-2) fell to No. 3 North Carolina (14-1-1, 7-0-1) 2-0 in Chapel Hill.

"We lost to a team that was better than we were," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "I thought that they played harder and were more prepared. At the end of the day, they did the things that were necessary to win the game. Congratulations to Carolina, good win for them. We will go back and regroup and hopefully, we will get better."

The first half was a dog fight as neither team could get on the board. The Seminole backline was tested as UNC got off five shots to the Noles two. It was the second-fewest shots FSU has taken in a first half this season.

In the 13th minute, UNC's Pinto got off a shot that went over Caroline Jeffers' head and hit the crossbar. Four minutes later FSU would get off their first shot of the half as Jenna Nighswonger crossed it to Yujie Zhao but the shot was wide.

In the 20th minute, Carolina would get off another good look, this one a header that would go off the post. In the 23rd minute, Jeffers would make her first and only save of the first half to keep it scoreless.

The second half was a stalemate until the 76th minute when Carolina would break the scoreless tie. It started with a Deyna Castellanos shot just nine seconds into the half. UNC would get off their first shot in the 48th minute and it would be the third one to hit the post.

The Noles would get a couple of good looks on passes by Nighswonger to Heather Payne and Zhao but neither could convert. In the 76th minute, Ru Mucherera would get her third goal of the season on an assist by Lotte Wubben-Moy. Seven minutes later, in the 83rd minute, North Carolina would put it out of reach with a goal by Brianna Pinto, her ninth of the season, to make it 2-0.

Soccer Wraps Up Road Trip with 2-1 Win Over Wake Forest.

WINSTON-SALAM, N.C. - The No. 5 Florida State soccer team (13-4-0, 7-2-0) wrapped up their road trip in North Carolina with a 2-1 win over Wake Forest (6-7-4, 1-5-3). The win secured that the Seminoles will host the first round of the ACC tournament at home on Sunday, November 3.

"Going on the road and coming up here to play Carolina on Thursday and Wake Forest today is a tough order of business," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "For our kids to go down a goal but bounce back to equalize and then find the game-winner is a good sign of the character of the group. We will now get back home and finish our regular season at home on Thursday against Duke."

The Seminoles had their second fewest shots this season with just six but that did not matter as the Garnet and Gold were very efficient. The Seminoles had three of six shots on goal, resulting in two goals for the Seminoles.

Wake Forest opened the game with some early pressure resulting in a quick first-half goal. Just over five minutes into the game the Demon Deacons took the ball from the Seminoles and broke free getting a shot on goal that resulted in a Caroline Jeffers diving save. Ryanne Brown of Wake got the rebound and passed it off to Giovanna DeMarco for the first goal of the game.

After a few opportunities by the Seminoles, they finally got on the board in the 30th minute. Kristen McFarland hit the equalizer on assists from Kirsten Pavlisko and Jenna Nighswonger. The Noles went right through the middle as McFarland chipped it over the Wake goalkeeper.

The goal puts McFarland fourth on the team in goals with four after converting her first since the game against Boston College (Sept. 19). It was Pavlisko's first assist of the season and Nighswonger's fourth.

Florida State finished with just two shots in the first half for the second straight game. A tie for the second-fewest in a half this season.

The Seminoles broke the tie in the 62nd minute on a penalty kick. The Garnet and Gold were pressuring the Demon Deacons in the 18-yard box before Carla Robbins was fouled, leading to a Deyna Castellanos penalty kick. Castellanos converted her second penalty kick of the season to give the Noles a 2-1 lead. The goal was her ninth of the season and the 45th of her career. She has moved into solo second place in all-time goals at Florida State.

Wake Forest had one of their best chances in the 73rd minute on a run by Mia Albery down the left side of the field. She got off a shot across the net but Caroline Jeffers made a diving save, one of three saves on the day.

Wake got another great look in the 87th minute on a free-kick. Madison Hammond got the ball as Jeffers dove for it and fired one at goal knocking it off of the post as the Seminoles would retain possession and hold on for their 13th win of the season, seventh in the ACC.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 5 Florida State soccer team (14-4-0, 8-2-0) took down No. 9 Duke (8-2-7, 3-1-6) 1-0 on Senior Day with outstanding performances from both seniors Deyna Castellanos and Caroline Jeffers.

In a game in which was scoreless for 78 minutes, the Noles hit the game-winner on a Deyna Castellanos strike from around 30 yards out in the 79th minute, fittingly on Senior Day. After the goal, Castellanos ran to celebrate with her mom, who was in Tallahassee to watch her play at FSU for the first time. Her goal was assisted by Jenna Nighswonger and Malia Berkely.

"It was pretty exciting," Castellanos said of her mother being in attendance. "She thought I wasn't going to score today, but that almost never happens when she's watching."

"It's a storybook ending, right?" FSU soccer coach Mark Krikorian said after the match. "Big-time players make big plays and she sure did. That was a great strike at the most-needed moment in a very tight game. Obviously, the difference in the game was Deyna's strike."

The Seminoles struggled to get good looks in the first half, only getting off five shots and two on goal. The Noles maintained possession nearly the entire game as they held onto the ball for 73 percent of the game, resulting in 15 shots to Duke's three.

Duke did have some good looks on goal though as Jeffers had to make one great save as she came way out of goal in the 37th minute in a one on one with Duke's Emmy Duerr. She also broke up a few Duke crosses to keep the Blue Devils off of the scoreboard for the eighth Seminoles shutout of the season and fifth for Jeffers.

The win over Duke handed the Blue Devils their first loss in ACC play as they previously had seven ties, including 0-0 draws with No. 1 Virginia and No. 3 North Carolina.

With the win, Florida State assumed the No. 2 seed in the ACC Tournament and will play seventh-seeded Clemson in the first round of the 2019 ACC Tournament on Sunday, November 3 at the Seminole Soccer Complex.

Soccer Advances to ACC Semifinals With 2-1 Win over No. 22 Clemson.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 5 Florida State soccer team (15-4-0, 8-2-0) took care of business in the first round of the ACC Tournament, defeating No. 22 Clemson (11-6-1, 5-5-0) 2-1 to advance to the semifinals on Friday in Cary, N.C.

"Clemson caused a lot of problems for us today," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "We didn't get a whole lot of good chances on goal and that is certainly a credit to them. At the end of the day, we found a way to score a couple of goals and move on."

Deyna Castellanos and Jaelin Howell took over the match, both recording a goal while Castellanos had one of two FSU assists on the day. With the goal and assist Castellanos moved into solo second place in all-time points at Florida State with 114.

"Deyna is one of the all-time greats to ever play here at Florida State," said Krikorian. "Great players make great plays. The corner kick, I don't know if she did it on purpose but if she listened to me she would take full credit. Her assist to Jaelin (Howell) was top quality as well."

Clemson got things started with a nice header in the second minute that was saved by Caroline Jeffers but would not get many more good looks as they would have just three more shots with one on goal.

Florida State would get their first shot off in the 15th minute with a high shot by Jaelin Howell. Florida State would then line up for a corner in the 18th minute as Castellanos fired one to the back post that would go untouched for her 11th goal of the season. It was the second straight game in which she scored.

Not much would happen for the rest of the half as the Noles would go into halftime with a 4-2 lead on shots and control of the ball for 68 percent of the half.

The Noles would get three early shots off in the second half but none on target. In the 64th minute, Clemson would hit the equalizer on Lauren Bruns' first goal of the season. It was assisted by Renee Guion and Mackenzie Smith.

That would be the fourth and final shot for the Tigers as the Florida State defense stepped up for the rest of the game.

The tie was broken in the 77th minute on a nice set-up from Malia Berkely and Deyna Castellanos. The two exchanged passes before Castellanos struck a beautiful cross to Jaelin Howell who headed it into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

The FSU defense would hold on to the one goal lead for the final 13 minutes helping the Seminoles advance to the ACC Tournament semifinals.

"We talk a lot about managing a game down the stretch and I thought there some really good things that we did," said Krikorian. "There were other things we may need to adjust a little. Overall, it was a good solid performance after a tough game on Thursday against Duke."

Soccer Falls to No. 1 Virginia 2-1 in the ACC Tournament Semifinal.

CARY, N.C. - The No. 5 Florida State soccer team (15-5-0, 8-2-0) fell No. 1 Virginia (16-0-3, 6-0-3) 2-1 in overtime of the ACC Tournament semifinal. It was their second overtime loss to the Cavaliers this season.

"It was two pretty good teams out there playing and competing," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "Virginia made the extra play to win the game and congratulations to them. We will get to back to Tallahassee and get some rest."

"They are a very well-coached team and have a lot of very good players," said Krikorian. "Against good teams, it is going to come down to that special moment and they had two and we had one."

The first half was a defensive battle as the Noles and Cavaliers exchanged three total shots and went into the half tied 0-0. Virginia got an early look in the eighth minute by Meghan McCool as she had an open shot on goal but Caroline Jeffers came up with her only save of the first half.

The Noles got off two shots but could not get one on goal. The Seminoles best look of the first half came on one of their four corner kicks as Deyna Castellanos served one up to Jaelin Howell, who's header would go just high.

Not much was going for the first 20 minutes of the second half until the 67th minute when Virginia got three straight corners. The first one was cleared behind the net and the second one was deflected out of the end line on a blocked shot. Virginia finally converted on their third straight corner. Alexa Spaanstra served in the corner and it was put away but Zoe Morse on a header.

Florida State tied up the match in the 82nd minute on Kristen McFarland's fifth goal of the season. Castellanos fired a corner in from the left side to Howell at the top of the 18-yard box. Howell headed it towards goal as McFarland bodied it into the net right past the UVA keeper to tie the match at one.

"I thought tying it up was a good sign of being resilient," said Krikorian. "During the course of the game there were a lot of really good moments for us but we were not dangerous enough. We are going to have to become a little more lethal when we around the box."

Castellanos would get a free-kick from inside the box with 17 seconds on the clock but would kick it high of the net sending the game to overtime. It would be the second overtime game against No. 1 Virginia in 2019.

In the 97th minute, Rebecca Jarrett of Virginia ended the game with a golden goal on an assist from Alexa Spaanstra after a save from Jeffers.

Soccer Advances to NCAA Second Round with 2-0 Win Over South Alabama.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State soccer team (16-5) defended their home turff in the first round of the NCAA Tournament with a 2-0 win over South Alabama (16-4-2).

The Noles improved to 19-0-1 all-time in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and 45-1-1 at home in the NCAA Tournament.

The Seminoles got out of the gate hot scoring in just four minutes and 44 seconds with a Kirsten McFarland goal coming off of assists from Jaelin Howell and Yujie Zhao. It was McFarland's sixth goal of the season and came off a beautiful ball by Howell that led Zhao behind the defense. Zhao was then able to drop it off to McFarland for her first of two goals on the afternoon.

The Seminoles would go on to take seven more shots in the first half with multiple of them being blocked by the Jaguars defense before the ball could get to the net. Florida State had a good look on goal as Deyna Castellanos attempted a bicycle kick in the 39th minute that would go just wide.

The second half started with a shot launched by Castellanos right off the kickoff that would be saved by South Alabama. The Seminoles would take seven more shots before they finally got another one to hit the back of the net.

McFarland earned her second goal of the night on another Seminole double assist. Florida State attacked the middle of the Jaguars defense as Abbey Newton passed it to Zhao who earned her second assist of the night as she passed it along to McFarland for her second goal.

Soccer Advances to NCAA Third Round With a 2-0 Win Over Brown.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State soccer team (17-5) took care of business in the second round of the NCAA Tournament earning a 2-0 win over the Brown Bears (14-2-3).

Kristen McFarland scored her fourth consecutive goal for the Seminoles in the first half to give the Noles an insurmountable 1-0. She scored her second goal of the game in the 88th minute for her second straight two goal game to seal it for the Seminoles.

Brown got off an early first shot less than a minute into the game as Sara Bermudez fired one wide. Florida State would not get off their first shot until the 20th minute.

It would not take long after that as nine minutes later McFarland would hit the back of the net for the eighth time this season. The goal was set up after a Jaelin Howell shot got saved by the Brown keeper leading to a corner kick.

Deyna Castellanos stepped up for the corner and dropped off a short pass to Malia Berkely who quickly passed it back to Castellanos. She would then cross the ball across the box to Abbey Newton who headed it over to McFarland for the goal. It was Newton's fifth assist of the season and Castellanos' 11th.

The Seminoles would head into the half with an 8-3 shot advantage including four of those shots on goal. FSU also maintained possession for 72 percent of the first half.

In the second half the Seminoles got off nine shots but Brown's keeper came up with four impressive saves showing why she entered the game sixth in the country in goals-against average, only allowing five goals all year.

It took until the 88th minute for the Seminoles to get their second goal. The Brown keeper went to clear the ball out of their box before McFarland had a great effort play to get in the way. The ball ricocheted off of McFarland's back and into the goal putting the game out of reach.

Soccer Advances NCAA Elite 8 With a 2-1 Win Over USF.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State soccer team (18-5) advanced to the NCAA Elite 8 with a physical 2-1 win over the USF Bulls (16-5) in Tallahassee on Sunday afternoon.

"We were tested in a lot of ways today," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "I thought our kids responded very well, especially after going down an early goal. We came out and were very composed throughout the 90 minutes and found a way to win the game."

USF came out hot getting their first and only goal in the fifth minute. The goal came after three early fouls and on USF's first of four shots in the game. Katie Kitching flicked one into the middle of the box to Aubrey Megrath who finished for her fifth goal of the season.

This was the 11th time this season that Florida State's opponent scored first. It would also turn out to be the sixth time in 2019 that FSU would come back to win after surrendering the game's first goal.

"I don't think you can ever get comfortable going down by a goal," said Krikorian. "Our players know with resilience we can come back. We have done it before. In the next round, we are certainly not trying to spot anyone a goal and then trying to work back."

The Seminoles could not find the back of the net until the 45th minute when Jaelin Howell earned her fifth goal of the season coming off of a Heather Payne assist, her second. It was the Noles fifth shot of the game and came because of Payne's great hustle. After being challenged on the right side of the box, Payne regained control and passed it off to Howell right outside of the six-yard box. Howell redirected the ball for the equalizer.

"I knew that they would have the momentum going into the second half if we did not score a goal," said Howell. "Getting the goal and the equalizer before the second half was huge and I thought that my teammates were composed and stayed composed throughout the first half in order to get that goal."

There were two early fouls in the second half by USF before Brianna Blethen fouled Gabby Carle in the box to force a penalty kick. Deyna Castellanos stepped in to take the PK and buried it to give the Noles a 2-1 lead that they would go on to maintain for the rest of the game.

It was Castellanos's 12th goal of the season and 20th career game-winning goal, giving her the most in program history. Castellanos now has 48 career goals and 118 career points, both second all-time at Florida State.

"It is always great to win," said Castellanos. "Today we had a very good game collectively and followed the game plan."

Florida State would dominate on the offensive side of the ball outshooting USF 16-4 with 10 corner kicks to USF's zero. USF set a season-high for fouls with 29 to go along with six yellow cards on the afternoon.

Soccer Season Comes to an End With Loss to UCLA in the Elite 8.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State soccer team's season came to an end on Friday afternoon with a 4-0 loss to second-seeded UCLA at home. It was the first NCAA Tournament loss at home for Florida State since November 27, 2009.

"I'm really proud of the effort our team put forward today," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "I don't know if we executed at our best or our finest, but full credit to UCLA. They came in here and were the better team. They outplayed us; they deserved to win and they deserved to go forward to the College Cup. As I said to the team after the game, the hardest part is of course saying goodbye to Deyna and Caroline, and realizing what great careers they've had here and what a great contribution they made to the program. I look forward to watching Deyna as she goes on and takes her skills to the next level, and goes on to have a great career in the next phase. It's hard, it's never easy losing at this stage, especially after the joy everyone felt last year. Today, I think we can feel okay knowing we lost to a better team."

The Bruins got out quick scoring their first goal in the eighth minute with a Chloe Castaneda goal coming on an assist from Mia Fishel. Ten minutes later, the Bruins would tack on another one with Castaneda's second goal of the day and fifth of the season coming off an assist from Anika Rodriguez.

UCLA capped off the first half with their third goal of the game, this one coming from Mia Fishel, her 13th of the season. UCLA outshout Florida State 7-2 in the first half and recorded five corner kicks.

Florida State came out with a quick shot just a minute into the second half from Jenna Nighswonger but the shot was blocked. UCLA would then control the rest of the game getting their fourth goal in the 54th minute. It was Mia Fishel's second of the afternoon and 14th of the season.

Florida State would not be able to catch up to the Bruins as the surrendered four goals for the first time since 2012 and suffered their worst loss since they lost 5-0 to Stanford in the 2010 College Cup.

This game was also the end of an era for two Seminoles as Deyna Castellanos and Caroline Jeffers wrapped up their careers in the Garnet and Gold.

Castellanos will go down as one of the greatest soccer players in Florida State history as she ends her career ranked in the top-2 in program history in Goals (48), Points (118), Shots (343), Shots on Goal (166) and Game Winning Goals (20). Castellanos was a three-time First Team All-ACC member and a two time Second Team All-American.

Jeffers would end her career ranked seventh in FSU history in wins with 21. She will forever be remembered for coming in during the ACC Championship game a season ago and leading the Seminoles to their second National Championship, capping off the season with three straight shutouts.
