No. 21 FSU Soccer Wins NCAA Opener For Third Year In A Row.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - For the third straight season, the 21st-ranked FSU soccer team (12-6-3) won its opening game at the NCAA Tournament defeating Ole Miss (13-5-2) 2-0 Friday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The victory raised the Seminoles record to 12-0-2 at home on Friday night's since head coach Patrick Baker took over the program in 1999. The Seminoles now move into the Round of 32 where they will face Auburn (15-4-2) Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for the right to advance to the program's second Sweet 16 in three years.
The Seminoles used a stellar performance from 2002 All-ACC first teamer Cindy Schofield, keeper Kerry York and the entire defense Friday night. The Florida State defense, which recorded three shutouts all season before Friday, now have two shutouts in their last three NCAA Tournament games.
"We have been preaching defending for a good while now and I am very pleased for Kerry (York), Meredith (Jones), Katie (Beal), (Kristin) Boyce, (Ashlee) Fontes and T (Teresa Rivera) to step out just like we did in the first round last year and defend well for 90 minutes and keep them off the board," said Baker.
"They are very organized in the back," said Mississippi head coach Steve Holeman. "Their back four did a great job of eliminating us and their keeper did a great job."
The Florida State defense once again rose to the occasion in the NCAA Tournament. After allowing seven goals in their final three games, the FSU back four helped to record the team's fourth shutout of the season and they have now allowed just one goal in the last 270 minutes of NCAA postseason play shutting out an Ole Miss squad that had only been blanked once in 19 matches prior to Friday night.
"A lot of people stepped up and when you get to this point you have to defend well and that is why I thought Meredith (Jones) and Katie (Beal) were our co-MVP's tonight", said Baker. "They did a wonderful job doing the little things. All those things added up. We stayed diligent, we worked hard and tonight it paid off."
"I think sometimes we felt flustered as a unit," said Jones. "We'll make one little mistake and get countered. I felt that it was imperative to put forth a better effort tonight. This will boost our confidence knowing we can get a shutout versus a good team in the NCAA Tournament. Our entire team defended very well from top to bottom. It wasn't just the back four and our goalie."
York, a sophomore goalie from Severna Park, MD, was stellar in the net as she has now gone 180 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal in the NCAA postseason. She made five saves Friday night and came up big when she was called upon just as she did versus Auburn and Clemson in 90 minutes of work in the 2001 tournament.
"We have worked really hard on defense all week, focusing on the little things," said York. "Collectively the players in front of me were so good tonight from top to bottom.
"A lot of us talked before the game about how confident we were coming into tonight's match. I am so comfortable behind all of our defenders and tonight everything felt like it was clicking perfectly for us as a unit."
Schofield, a two-time All-ACC first team selection, had the best night of her career in the NCAA Tournament as she recorded a goal and an assist driving Florida State to its 10th multi-game goal in the last 15 matches. Her 42nd-minute penalty kick also gave FSU a goal in its 20th-straight game dating back to the second game of the season. Schofield's goal and assist moved the striker into the top two best single season marks for goals, points and assists in the history of the program.
Despite their success, the Seminole offense found it tough early on against a stellar Ole Miss defense. The Rebels came into the match allowing an average of just one goal a game and they showed up early holding the Seminole attack at bay for the first six minutes of the match and FSU didn't seriously challenge the Rebels until 10 minutes in.
"Ole Miss is a very good soccer team and they made it very difficult for us to play the way we are capable of playing," said Baker. "I give them credit for that because they made it difficult at times for us. They came out with wonderful energy to start the game.
"I thought across the board, their defense gave a wonderful effort tonight. I thought the Ole Miss defense did a great job of neutralizing our wide players from getting around the outside. They came in with eight shutouts so we knew it was going to be difficult."
In the 10th minute, the Seminoles started to find their rhythm and began to penetrate the Ole Miss backline. All-ACC Rookie Team member Leah Gallegos attacked the Rebels and sent a pass into the box that was deflected right back to her. She took off with the ball at her feet and beat two defenders. As soon as she worked herself into space, she fired to the back post but her shot bounced off the post just narrowly missing putting FSU in front.
Moments later, senior midfielder Jenny Garcia found Jez Ratliff out wide. The sophomore one timed the pass into the box and right on to the head of Schofield who was about 10 yards out. The senior's header just went inches wide of the Rebel goal.
"I thought after Ole Miss' initial energy started to wear off, we started to take control of the game a little bit more," said Baker. "That probably wasn't until about 20 minutes into the half. Then we put together a string of 15 to 20 minutes where we started to do some nice things. We started to play and knock it around like we are capable of. Maybe that was our opening round jitters or just being disappointed our last two times out at home."
After FSU's second serious chance of the night, an Ole Miss counter produced the Rebels best opportunity for a goal on the evening. Anna Sanders slid in behind the FSU defense and received a pass that put her in the box on the right side all alone with York. The 2001 Maryland Gatorade Player of the Year charged the senior and made a huge stop on the midfielder's shot.
"I don't remember how she got through but I remember she was coming at me on my left side. I made sure I was in position and went she went to strike the ball I just attacked," said York. "Luckily on that play I did things right.
"An early save like that makes a huge difference mentally for me and the team. I think it gave the team confidence that I was playing well and personally it made me feel good."
In the 28th minute Gallegos once again came inches away from putting FSU on top. The freshman dribbled down the center of the pitch and to the 18 yard box. She then ripped a shot that beat Mississippi keeper Brittany Gillespie (13-5-2) but caught enough of the underside of the crossbar to force it straight down where the ball bounced and was cleared off the line.
With time winding down in the first half, FSU looked for the go-ahead goal. Beal, who was stellar all night defensively, almost recorded her fourth assist of the season when she picked off a pass in the center of the field and immediately started to drive an FSU counter attack. She sent a high-arching ball from just inside midfield to the backpost and right onto the foot of junior Amber Tollefson who had run behind the Ole Miss defense. Tollefson collected the pass and was just unable to get the shot off before Ole Miss got back into position.
Florida State would get on the board just minutes later. Junior midfielder Summer Corum lulled the Mississippi defense to sleep as she slowly brought the ball into the penalty box before blowing past the defender marking her. In a last ditch attempt to stop the run, Corum's legs were taken out from under her and FSU was awarded a penalty kick at the 41:26 mark. Schofield drove a low shot into the side netting that Gillespie got a hand on but had no chance of stopping putting FSU up 1-0.
"That penalty kick was all due to Summer (Corum). She was unbelievable," said Schofield. "She took the girl to the outside, got her stuck in and if she wasn't taken down, it could have been a goal for her just as easily. In tournament time, games sometimes come down to PK's so we have worked on that."
"Summer's individual ability to unbalance a defender or a defense is pretty special," said Baker. "With Summer and Jez (Ratliff) in the game at the same time, they are like bookends. They can really run at people and Summer is pretty explosive. We told her she needed to make those types of runs and it paid off in a goal for us."
"They have tremendous speed on the outside and Jez Ratliff was a handful for us tonight," said Holeman. "She is very fast and she got in behind us. We felt we did a pretty good job of containing their athleticism but that was definitely an asset for them tonight."
In the second half, Mississippi look to capitalize on one of the few errors in the back by the Florida State defense as Kristin Chapman picked off an errant pass in FSU's third of the field. She found SEC Rookie of the Year Kelly Renie open about eight yards in front of the goal as the Carmel, IN native looked to tally her 19th goal of the season. The forward just got under the shot and sent it over the crossbar preserving the FSU lead.
Florida State put the game away in the 72nd minute. Garcia sent Schofield down the center of the pitch as FSU broke out in a three-on-two. The senior had Camie Bybee running on her right and Ratliff on her left. As both Rebel defenders closed on Schofield, the All-American candidate slide a perfect pass to Ratliff inside the box. Gillespie charged but the sophomore dribbled around her and stuck the ball into the empty net setting new career highs with her sixth goal and 17th point of the season.
"Jenny (Garcia) won a ball in the middle and sent the ball into Cindy (Schofield)," said Ratliff. "The defenders converged on her and she sent a great through ball. I was able to beat the keeper to it and find the net."
"We had a defensive miscue, they got behind us and finished. That is what great teams do," said Holeman. "Florida State is a great team."
Beal set FSU up with one last chance as she sent another great ball into the box. Gillespie came out to try to punch out the lofted service but Bybee got to the ball first. With her back to the goal, the sophomore flicked the ball backwards and over the keeper but the attempt just missed the goal.
With Auburn's 2-o win over UCF earlier in the day, the Seminoles and Tigers will now meet again in the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season. Auburn won the SEC regular season title this year and is led by stellar keeper Megan Rivera (13-3-2). The Miami native came into the NCAA Tournament with the 22nd-best GAA in the nation and lowered her 0.76 GAA with a shutout Friday.
"Auburn is having a wonderful year. You don't finish first in the SEC without doing some wonderful things," said Baker. "They are good up top, they are solid in the back and they have some individual skill players in the central midfield.
"One of the most evident things is Megan Rivera who is the back-up keeper on our U-19 National Team. Last year we snuck one past her on a great misdirection with Camie (Bybee) at the backpost. That's what it takes to get one past her. You have to do something pretty special to beat her and I just hope we get enough chances Sunday."
Florida State is 3-1-0 all-time versus the Tigers and this is the second-straight year the Seminoles have met a team twice in-a-row in the NCAA's with a chance to advance to the Sweet 16. In 2000 and 2001, FSU faced Clemson in South Carolina once with a trip to the Elite Eight on the line and last year with a Sweet 16 berth awaiting the winner.

FSU Soccer Headed To Second Sweet 16 With 2-1 Win Over Auburn.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Although she isn't on the Hermann Award watch list or wasn't voted ACC Player of the Year, FSU striker Cindy Schofield is one of the most special college players playing the game today and in the 2002 NCAA Tournament she is proving that. For the second straight game, Schofield scored a game-winning goal and assisted on an FSU goal as No. 21 Florida State (13-6-3) downed SEC regular season champion Auburn (15-5-2) 2-1 and advanced to the program's second Sweet 16 in three seasons.
"I am very excited for our players and our program," said head coach Patrick Baker. "We tried to get to this point (Sweet 16) last year after going in 2000 but came up a little short. It is just an unbelievable feeling to get back to the round of 16 and know that we are one of the few teams that gets to continue to play."
"This is unbelievable. I am still shaking. It is a great feeling," said Schofield. "We were there (Sweet 16) in 2000 and came close last year but to finally get there again it is amazing. This team can do so well when we play to our capabilities. I am so happy for everyone because we have all worked so hard from the first day of preseason to now."
The Seminoles controlled most of the game possessing the ball in the Auburn half for long stretches attempting to break down a very tough Tiger defense and one of the nation's best keepers in Megan Rivera (13-4-2). The Tribe out shot Auburn 10 to 3, put eight shots on goal compared to just two for the Tigers and forced Rivera into six saves compared to just one for FSU starter Kerry York (13-5-3).
"We wanted to come out with a win today. That's the way you have to do it. You have to dominate the other team as best as you can," said freshman forward Leah Gallegos.
"I think we put a premium on possession today. I think physical play is a part of the game but possession is something we take great pride in," said Baker. "All of our players are technically sound. We want to put the ball on the floor, move it and create movement off the ball. At times we felt Auburn was a little direct and played into our hands because we would get the ball, possess it and try to put the pressure on them. We didn't get the final ball in as much as we would have liked but we got the one that matter there at the end to spring Cindy (Schofield)."
After playing most of the first seven minutes of the game in Auburn's half, FSU had its first crack at Rivera. Defender Katie Beal served a long ball straight into the 20 mph wind that landed at the backpost. After an attempted clearance on a Tiger header, sophomore Camie Bybee won the ball in the air and headed her shot on frame but Rivera came up with the save.
The Seminoles capitalized on their next chance with just over 18 minutes gone in the game. Freshman Leah Gallegos was making a run into the Tiger box when she was pulled down on the right side about 22 yards out. Schofield sent a low free kick diagonally to the left post where Bybee and Jez Ratliff were making a run.
"We have never worked on that particular set piece in practice," said Schofield. "We had a lot of time because someone was fixing their shoe. The wall lined up and there was such a huge gap. I was trying to signal to Jez (Ratliff) that I was going to try to do that. They way the defense was parted it set itself up. The angle was just there. I don't know how Camie (Bybee) knew what I was planning to do but she made a great run to the backpost."
Bybee saw the same thing Schofield saw and timed her run perfectly meeting the ball about eight yards away from the net and then slotting the ball just inside the post putting FSU up 1-0. It was Bybee's second NCAA goal versus Auburn after scoring the game-winner last year in the opening round.
"I didn't come into today thinking about the goal I scored against them last year because that has nothing to do with this year's game," said Bybee. "Cindy (Schofield) slotted an unbelievable ball and I am just happy I was able to step up and put it in."
The Seminoles almost went into the half with a 2-0 lead if it weren't for the efforts of Rivera, the back-up keeper on the US U-19 National team. Junior Amber Tollefson put a perfect pass down the middle and behind the defense which landed right at Gallegos' feet. The freshman put a move on two defenders and fired a point blank shot over the Auburn keeper. Rivera was just able to fist the ball over the crossbar and preserve the lead.
With a 1-0 lead, the Seminoles continued to attack Auburn at the start of the second half. Just one minute in, Schofield found Ratliff running on the right side of the box. Ratliff got in with Rivera but she was so far towards the right side of the goal that Rivera was able to come up with the save.
In the 60th minute FSU had a flurry of activity inside the Tiger box. Bybee played a great ball to Tollefson just inside the left side of the box. Tollefson served the ball to two waiting teammates in the center of the box but the defense got a touch and cleared it right back to Tollefson. The wide midfielder served the ball right back into the box but Rivera snatched the cross almost off of Schofield's head.
Auburn had one serious threat in the half and the Tigers made it count. In the 64th minute Sarah Steinmann made a run down the far left sideline and then launched a pinpoint service into the FSU box. Christina Culver was making a run and collected the ball between two defenders and just tapped the ball to the backpost to even the match.
"I think they deserve credit for that goal because they created a chance and they stuck it," said York. "I was personally so upset because our defense had worked so hard and even seconds before that shot both myself and (Katie) Beal saw two girls at the backpost. We were trying to get ourselves re-organized but they played the ball into the perfect spot."
"The breakdown occurred earlier on that goal," said Baker. "We lost our shape in the back and Jez (Ratliff) was having to defend Steinmann. She got around the corner and sent a great ball in behind us. We know what Culver is capable of and she hit a great first time ball."
The goal was the first allowed by York in her NCAA Tournament career. Before Culver's equalizer, the sophomore from Severna Park, MD had gone more than 243 minutes in NCAA Tournament play without allowing a goal.
"Our defense starts in goal and works out from there to our back four," said Baker. "I could tell it was going to be a good week for York because of some of the comments she made after the NCAA selection show. She talked about how she wanted to perform and make sure she gave everything she could so our senior class could get back to the Sweet 16. That set the tone."
On top of the play in goal by York, the FSU defense has been stellar in the NCAA Tournament over the last two seasons. In four games, the Seminole backline has allowed just two goals in 360 minutes. They limited Auburn to its lowest shot total of the season and held them to their fewest shots on goal of the year also.
"We did such a good job of containing them today. I think the only time Yorkie (Kerry York) was called upon was on set pieces," said Baker. "We did a great job of keeping everybody in front of us and neutralizing Culver and Steinmann. They are good players and Steinmann was the SEC Player of the Year. She created a good chance that they stuck but once again our defense was great today."
"Everything starts with our defense," said Schofield. "Our defending has been unbelievable this weekend. They just picked it up a notch. It starts in the back and with York in goal. We are defending well and when you do that it is easy to score goals."
After the tying goal, FSU didn't get another serious attack until almost 18 minutes later. After controlling possession most of the game, the Tribe entered the final 10 minutes tied with the prospect of overtime staring them in the face.
"I thought the Auburn goal changed the complexion of the game and gave them a huge shot in the arm," said Baker. "After the next eight minutes when things calmed down, we really started to assert ourselves again. To be honest with you, I never really thought about overtime. In fact I didn't think, up until the point that they scored, that we were going to lose."
With eight minutes remaining in the game, FSU looked like they would be able to avoid overtime as Gallegos and Schofield once again combined to produce a dangerous opportunity. Schofield played Gallegos into the box on the right side. The Los Angeles native got in one-on-one with Rivera but the stellar keeper once again was able to punch the ball away preserving the tie.
"That was a beautiful save. There was nothing I could do about that. She deserves all the credit for making the play," said Gallegos. "I was really hoping that was going to give us the win.
"With 10 minutes remaining I was telling myself that we would and could win that game. With five minutes left, I got a little bit shaky but I was still confident we could pull it out."
In the 85th minute Florida State looked as if had netted the game-winner. Senior midfielder Jenny Garcia sprung Schofield inside the box and straight on with Rivera. The forward was able to beat the keeper and fire the ball into the open net but Auburn junior Sandy Carnes blocked the ball out of the air and kept Auburn alive.
"I thought that was in. I was cheering already," said Schofield.
"When we sprung Leah (Gallegos), I thought that was the one," said Baker. "We really hadn't got behind them too much and then we finally sprung her behind the defense. Then Cindy had another chance. We talked about how to beat Megan and that was to get balls in behind the defense. pull the keeper off the line and tuck it. We felt the game-winner was coming though. Even the players on the bench kept screaming that it was coming."
A minute after Schofield's near miss, the Tribe attacked again. Garcia sent another phenomenal ball down the center of the pitch that hit Gallegos at the top of the 18. The freshman took one touch and slide the ball into Schofield who was making another well-timed run.
"Everything happened pretty quickly," said Gallegos. "As the ball was played, I saw Cindy (Schofield) out of the corner of my eye and I knew she could get the goal."
The touch pass was perfect and Schofield slipped the ball in at the near post giving FSU a 2-1 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
"Jenny (Garcia) played Leah (Gallegos) a great ball and both defenders drew to her," said Schofield. "They just converged on Leah and I saw her with her back to goal and she knew I was there. She played an unbelievable ball. It was a perfect touch and I was wide open. I got in the seam and slotted it."
"Leah (Gallegos) is a dribbling queen but she can also make things happen for others. Two players went to her because Auburn was trying to double team her all game and she realized what was happening and slipped a great ball in. It was beautiful execution. Jenny (Garcia) has been instrumental in two of our three goals this weekend and she did a great job helping set up those scoring opportunities for us."
The game-winner was Schofield's second of the weekend as she also scored the first goal in Florida State's 2-0 win over Ole Miss. In two games in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, Schofield now has six points on two goals and an assist. It was also the 22nd time in her career that she has recorded three or more points in a game. She now has 103 points in her career and is the only player in FSU soccer history to ever record more than 100 points.

Seminoles' Run Ends In Sweet 16 With 1-0 Loss To UConn.
STORRS, CT - For the first time in 22 consecutive games dating back to August 30, 2002 the Florida State soccer team (13-7-3) was held without a goal as they fell in the Sweet 16 1-0 to Connecticut (21-2-1) Sunday. The 21st-ranked Seminoles, after giving up a goal just a minute into the game, limited the fourth-ranked Huskies to only one shot on goal over the next 88:50 while out shooting UConn 10-8, placing six shots on frame compared to just two for UConn and taking four corners compared to Connecticut's two.
The Seminoles created numerous scoring chances but just couldn't sneak one past All-BIG EAST first team keeper Maria Yatrakis (21-2-1) despite heavy pressure throughout the second half. After their early goal, the Huskies countered on the rare occasion and did their best to keep everything in front of them as FSU turned up the heat in frigid Storrs, CT.
"First off I like to congratulate UConn on a great game and advancing to the quarterfinals," said head coach Patrick Baker. "I thought today was everything I imagined it would be but I obviously never thought we were going to lose. We weren't over confident but I never expected this game to be decided in the first two minutes."
Just 1:10 out of the gate the Huskies would put FSU back on its heels. Redshirt freshman Jennifer Sullivan sent a ball over the top to freshman Brittany Barkat inside the 18 to the right of the goal. The Texas native chipped a shot over keeper Kerry York (13-6-3) who was charging out and put UConn in front 1-0 before FSU even knew what hit them.
"We knew they were capable of striking a bigger ball. We had seen that on film," said Baker. "We didn't read the service and get the cushion we wanted to. In these types of games, it's the little things. It was a great play by them too so give UConn credit."
"This is the Sweet 16. We weren't going to fold after giving up an early goal," said Cindy Schofield. "We know that you have to play to the end and play all 90 minutes. We were confident we could score goals because we have been doing that all year."
After the early score, Florida State showed they wouldn't fold and controlled the next 15 minutes of the match allowing the Huskies to get across midfield on very few occasions. The Tribe had its first serious opportunity in the 14th minute. Sophomore Jez Ratliff won the ball in the middle of the field and she sent a long diagonal pass to senior All-American candidate Cindy Schofield on the left side. The striker, who was in behind the defense, served a dangerous ball through the box that the Connecticut defense had to knock over the crossbar to end the threat.
Two minutes later the Seminoles almost drew even off a corner kick. Junior defender Kristin Boyce beat Yatrakis to the service knocking the ball out of the keeper's grasp. Boyce then located the loose ball and fired a shot on goal that was blocked off the line by the UConn defense before it could get into the net.
"I thought we responded well right after they scored," said Baker. "We really had some wonderful opportunities, chances and half chances to change the complexion of the game but give their defense and goalkeeping credit as they kept us off the scoreboard."
Florida State thought it would have a chance to even the game in the 35th minute via a penalty kick. Junior co-captain Amber Tollefson worked her way into the UConn box and as she got within 10 yards of the goal mouth she was chopped down on a hard tackle but no foul was called.
Just moments later FSU once again challenged Yatrakis and the Huskie defense. This time it was central midfielder Camie Bybee that sent a great ball down the center of the pitch. Freshman Leah Gallegos was in one-on-one with the keeper but Yatrakis came out of her box and was just able to beat Gallegos to the service, clearing it out of play.
Coming out of the half, Florida State turned up the pressure on the Connecticut backline and totally dominated the half. The Seminoles out shot Connecticut 9-3 in the second frame, took five shots on goal compared to just one for the Huskies and forced Yatrakis into five saves.
"We talked at halftime about trying to test the keeper because we really hadn't forced her into many saves in the first half," said Baker.
Just seconds in to the second period, Florida State pressured UConn in search of its first goal. Gallegos got herself free at the top of the UConn 18 and fired a low drive to the far post that just sailed wide by a matter of inches.
Later into the half Gallegos and Boyce combined on the left sideline freeing the freshman from Los Angeles inside the penalty box on the left side. Gallegos located Schofield in the middle and played the ball in to her. The senior, who had her back to the goal, was being closely marked and played the ball backwards but FSU was unable to get a clean shot off.
UConn's one dangerous chance in the second half almost resulted in a 2-0 lead. Salla Ranta used her size to get free on the right side of the Florida State penalty box. She got around York and fired on the vacated goal but senior Meredith Jones was there to keep the ball out of the net and allow the Seminoles to continue to play for the equalizer.
The Garnet and Gold countered Connecticut's best opportunity of the half with one of their own, this one the result of a set piece. Sophomore Katie Beal took the free kick from about 30 yards out and to the right of the goal. She served a brilliant ball to the backpost where Bybee attempted to latch on to it. The cross sailed just in front of her attempted header and still almost caught the backpost completely beating Yatrakis.
"I wanted to get to that ball so badly," said Bybee. "I wasn't concerned about what run I was making because I was just focused on trying to find the ball. I just couldn't latch on to it."
It was just two minutes later when FSU came within inches of drawing even. Bybee sent a great ball behind the defense and to sophomore Jez Ratliff. The wide midfielder dribbled across the top of the box and fired over the top of the Huskie keeper who had charged off her line. Yatrakis was just able to get her fist on the shot and knock it up into the air. With 20 minutes remaining in the match, Florida State added Ratliff to the frontline as they played with three front runners in an attempt to get the equalizer.
"We put a premium on possession. It is tough because we usually force tams to change their system and do something they don't characteristically do. Then with 20 minutes left we had to go for it and change our system to a 3-4-3 to try and create some chances," said Baker. "We got some chances we just couldn't put it away."
Schofield started to take matters into her own hand as the Seminoles went to a three front. The program's most decorated player began to cause trouble for the UConn defense despite the fact she was held without a shot for the first time this season.
"I don't think they focused on shutting me down because we have too many weapons. If a defense focuses on me, Leah (Gallegos) will get them and vice-a-versa," said Schofield. "The same goes for Camie (Bybee) and so many other players on this team. We just have too much firepower to focus on one player."
In the 77th minute Bybee set Schofield free in behind the defense but she was too deep in the Huskie box. She attempted to get the cross to Gallegos at the far post but the speed of the UConn defense closed in on her.
"I saw Leah (Gallegos) running backpost and I probably should have played it first time," said Schofield. "The defender was just too quick and she got back giving us a corner kick. I didn't have a really good angle so I decide to try to get it in to Leah after Camie played that great ball."
With five minutes left in regulation, Schofield and the Seminole offense launched one attack after another on the Connecticut net. Schofield won a loose ball in the midfield. She played a perfect ball into Ratliff about 14 yards out from goal but Yatrakis once again just had a step on the forward and got to it just before Ratliff could take the shot.
Florida State's best two chances in the closing moments came from Bybee. The Oklahoma native looked as if she had finally solved the UConn keeper when she settled a rebound at the top of the 18 and fired a low shot to the backpost. Once again Yatrakis was able to come up with a save as she made a sprawling dive to her left and corralled the shot.
With just moments remaining in the match, freshman Teresa Rivera almost became the hero with her corner kick service. The Parkland, FL native served a first rate ball to the backpost where Bybee had once again put herself in perfect position. The cross landed directly in front of Bybee but Yatrakis charged the sophomore and was able to smother the attempt before it could find its way into the back of the net.
The loss marked the end of five senior's careers at Florida State. The group, who came to Tallahassee on the heels of four losing seasons in five years and no wins in the history of the program in the ACC or NCAA Tournament, reshaped the program into a national power. With their second Sweet 16 trip in the last three years, FSU's five seniors accomplished something less than five percent of the 287 schools playing Division I soccer have. They played for an ACC Championship, became the first class to leave with a winning record versus Florida, went 21-3-0 over four years against in-state competition and established the best four-year record in program history.
"This senior class has changed the complexion of our program," said Baker. "Four years ago nobody wanted to come to Florida State to play women's soccer. Now we have been in the Sweet 16 two of the last three years. We've had three consecutive Top 25 recruiting classes. Ten years from now you will look back at this period of time and know something special happened and it is Cindy and the four other seniors that really changed everything."
Schofield ends her record setting career as the most prolific offensive player to ever wear the garnet and gold. She owns every career and single season record, she owns every postseason and ACC record at FSU and she put together the two best seasons in the history of Florida State soccer. The two-time All-ACC first team selection re-wrote FSU soccer history in her four years as a Seminole.
"Cindy is arguably one of the best goal scorers in the country," said Baker. "There is a difference between a goal scorer and a forward. She is a very good forward but she finds the net no matter who we face. She finds the net and scores goals for us in the conference, in the NCAA Tournament and everywhere else. She is one of the best players I have ever been allowed to coach. She and all of our seniors will be sorely missed."
The 2002 seasons was another record-breaking campaign for Florida State. The squad equaled the 1996 team's mark for the fewest losses in program history and that squad never played in an NCAA Tournament. The Tribe had the third-most wins of any Seminole team, they finished in the top half of the ACC standings for the second straight year and they won their third straight opening round match in the NCAA Tournament.
