Football Falls 16-13 In Opener.
by Chuck Walsh
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Georgia Tech outscored Florida State by a 16-3 margin in the second half and earned a hard-fought 16-13 win over the Seminoles in the season-opener for both teams at Doak Campbell Stadium. Despite three blocked kicks by the Seminoles' special teams unit, the debut of first year head coach Mike Norvell was spoiled by the Yellow Jackets' come from behind effort.
Georgia Tech (1-0, 1-0 ACC) outgained Florida State (0-1, 0-1 ACC) 438-307 in total yards including a 175-123 margin the second half. The Yellow Jackets scored the final nine points of the game.
James Blackman who started his 24th career game was 23-of-43 passing for 198 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore running back La'Damian Webb rushed for 39 yards in his Florida State debut while redshirt sophomore running back Jashaun Corbin caught eight passes for 55 yards in his debut as a Seminole.
Throughout the nine-month build-up to his first game as Florida State's head coach, Mike Norvell preached special teams and defense. In his introductory press conference on December 8, 2019, he declared that special teams play would be the backbone of his philosophy at Florida State.
The Seminoles' special teams unit blocked two Yellow Jacket field goal attempts (both by All-American candidate Marvin Wilson) and one extra point attempt (by fifth-year senior Janarius Robinson) and the defense earned two interceptions (both by defensive back Asante Samuel, Jr.) in certainly one of the most unusual football games in school history.
Not only was the game played during a worldwide pandemic in front of only a mandated 17,538 fans, but it featured two weather delays - one before the game began - for a total of 1 hour and 48 minutes.
Norvell was looking to become just the fifth coach in the storied history of the Florida State program to win his Seminole debut joining Don Veller (1948 vs. Cumberland), Bill Peterson (1960 vs. Richmond), Larry Jones (1971 vs. Southern Miss) and Jimbo Fisher (2010 vs. Samford). His personal season-opening day record is now 4-1.
"Congratulations to Coach (Geoff) Collins," said Norvell. "His team earned a hard-fought victory. It's very disappointing and I'm hurting for our guys. We missed out on some opportunities tonight; we struggled defensively. Obviously, our special teams I thought did some really good things with the blocked kicks; they did a nice job with their coverage and had a couple of opportunities to impact the game. Collectively, as a football team, we are not consistent enough. We missed out on some opportunities to get them off of the field which allowed them to convert on 50 percent of their third-down and extend some drives.
"We had miscommunication on things that you absolutely cannot have in all phases. We had some critical penalties, some dropped passes and obviously the three turnovers that hurt our football team throughout the course of the game. It was not the way we wanted to begin. I thought our guys came out with a great deal of energy. We were able to move the ball early then through the course of the game we really struggled to sustain drives."
The first Seminole touchdown of the Norvell era came on a 3-yard pass from Blackman to wide receiver Keyshawn Helton. The touchdown reception was the fifth of Helton's career. The scoring pass from Backman to Helton was the culmination of a 52-yard drive on which Blackman was a perfect three-for-three for 34 yards including a 27-yard strike to tight end Camren McDonald. Parker Grothaus added the first extra point of his career to give Florida State the early 7-0 lead.
Florida State's first score was set up by an interception by Samuel - the second of his career. His return of 38 yards allowed Blackman to begin operating the Seminole offense near midfield at its own 48.
Samuel secured his second interception of the game midway through the second quarter as he stepped in front of an errant Jeff Sims pass and returned it 31 yards. It marked the first time that a Florida State defender totaled multiple interceptions in a game since Kyle Meyers earned two against Samford on Sept. 8, 2018.
"Film study and determination to win," said Samuel of his two-interception night. "I've been watching those same plays on film and when I saw them I just had to react and make a play."
Samuel also spoke about the play of the defensive backs as a unit.
"We could have done better as a defensive backs (unit)," said Samuel. "It's really not on the offense or the coaches; we just have to do better, make tackles and make more plays. I feel like we prepared for every moment that was brought up to us. We have to execute the play and the situation. We were prepared for everything that was brought to us; nothing phased us. We've just come to come out victorious."
Florida State increased its lead to 10-0 following a weather delay of 1 hour and 19 minutes on a 37-yard field goal by Grothaus. It was the first made field goal of his career on his first career field goal attempt. The field goal came at the end of an 11-play, 61-yard drive which included two rushing attempts for 23 yards by Blackman and the first catch of the season by All-American candidate Tamorrion Terry.
Terry finished the game with six catches for 52 yards.
The Seminoles' special teams unit, with a time-honored tradition of blocking kicks, kept the Yellow Jackets off of the scoreboard in the second quarter as Wilson blocked a 22-yard field goal attempt by Jude Kelley. For Wilson, who played in his 34th career game as a Seminole, the blocked field goal was the first of his career and the first by the Seminoles since Nov 18, 2017 against Delaware State.
"We didn't get the job done," said Wilson. "During the night, I hope everybody on our team will want to watch film. We have to respond better in our next game when we go on the road in two weeks. We have to get our first win of the season. We have to respond and get better."
A second blocked kick by Wilson later in the second quarter continued the Seminoles' early defensive dominance. This time, Wilson sent back a 38-yard attempt by Kelley. Wilson's two blocked field goals marked the third time in school history that a Seminole blocked two field goals in a game. He became the first to accomplish the feat since B.J. Ward blocked two field goal attempts against Duke on Sept. 27, 2003.
"On those two plays, our backs were against the wall," said Wilson. "They hadn't scored and we were trying to keep them from scoring. Somebody had to step up and make a play and I was fortunate enough to step up and make that play. I wish I would have gotten the last kick to be able to keep the game tied and go into overtime. On the d-line we are going to have to play a lot better; we've got to get a whole lot better."
Georgia Tech scored its first touchdown of the season on a 19-yard end-around run by Jordan Mason to cut Florida State's lead to 10-7 with 6:13 remaining in the second half. The Yellow Jackets' score highlighted a 14-play, 80-yard drive. Mason rushed for 24 yards on three carries while Sims completed three passes for 32 yards on the scoring drive.
Florida State increased its lead to 13-7 on a 53-yard field goal by Grothuas with 1:04 left to be played in the third quarter.
Georgia Tech tied the game at 13-13 with 13:17 remaining in the fourth quarter on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Sims to Malachi Carter on a pass that was underthrown but still caught for the score. The Seminoles stellar special teams play continued blocking Kelly's extra point. Janarius Robinson came from the left side of the defensive line, broke through the Yellow Jackets' offensive front and earned the first blocked kick of his career.
Kelley gained a bit of redemption with a 32-yard field goal from the left hash to give Georgia Tech its first lead of the game at 16-13 with 8:56 left to be played.
Georgia Tech's defense forced a Florida State fumble and then held the Seminoles on downs in their final two offensive drives of the game.

Football Falls To Miami.
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - Florida State lost for only the second time in nine games at Hard Rock Stadium as No. 12 Miami gained a 52-10 victory over the Seminoles. The Seminoles were without first-year Head Coach Mike Norvell who returned a positive result for the Covid-19 virus and watched the game from his home in Tallahassee. Deputy Head Coach Chris Thomsen handled the in-person coaching duties in Norvell's absence.
Florida State (0-2, 0-2 ACC) fell to 0-2 for just the third time since 1989. Miami (3-0, 2-0 ACC) improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2017.
Florida State quarterback James Blackman completed 16-of-26 passes for 120 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Reserve quarterback Jordan Travis totaled seven rushes for a team-high 52 yards while true freshman Tate Rodemaker played the entire fourth quarter as Florida State's signal-caller as he earned playing time for the first time in his career.
The Seminoles' defense surrendered just 14 points and 184 total yards of offense in the second half after giving up 38 points and 333 yards of offense in the first 30 minutes.
Redshirt sophomore Amari Gainer led the Seminoles with eight tackles - the second consecutive week he has led Florida State in tackles. He totaled 10 tackles in Florida State's season opener against Georgia Tech in its season opener.
"I want to congratulate Coach (Manny) Diaz and the Miami football team," said Norvell. "I thought they did an extraordinary job tonight; really dominated in all phases, had a good plan and was able to execute that at a high level. Obviously, disappointed for our football team. It completely falls on me. I've got to do a better job of putting our guys in the best position possible to go out there and play a better brand of football. We've got to play more disciplined, more physical and obviously more consistent from top to bottom in all three phases. To have 12 or 13 penalties throughout the course of the game, things that definitely hurt us in a lot of areas, we've got to get that corrected.
"Throughout the course of the week, we've got to do a better of emphasizing that as a staff. It starts with me in all phases. We did not play to the standard of what we want to do and I am definitely grateful for our team, our staff and all the things some guys had to overtake with me not being there and I appreciate all the work that went into that but, obviously, we've got to perform at a higher level and it starts with me. We are going to continue to work, we are going to continue to emphasize those little things it takes to play winning football and we've got to better. That's something we are absolutely committed to and I know it's going to happen here as we move forward."
Miami scored first as it capitalized on a methodical 75-yard drive off of the opening kickoff and scored on a 24-yard touchdown pass from D'Eriq King to tight end Brevin Jordan. King was 8-of-10 passing for 67 yards on the Hurricane's scoring drive. Miami extended its drive as it converted on a fourth-and-three to move into Florida State territory as it drove to take a 7-0 lead.
Florida State answered quickly on a 68-yard drive which was culminated by a 26-yard field goal from Ryan Fitzgerald - the first field goal on the first field goal attempt of his career. The Seminoles' first drive of the night included 26 yards passing on 4-of-5 completions by Blackman and 20 yards rushing on four attempts by Jordan. The Seminoles took the ball down to the Hurricanes' 1-yard line before a fumble and a penalty forced the Seminoles to kick a field goal for their first score of the game.
Miami increased its lead to 14-3 on its 28th offensive play of the first quarter - a two-yard touchdown burst by running back Cam'Ron Harris. Harris rushed three times for 13 yards on the drive and scored his team-leading fourth rushing touchdown of the season.
Harris increased the Hurricane's lead to 21-3 with 12:36 left to play in the second quarter on his second rushing touchdown of the first half - this time on a 12-yard run. His second scoring run of the night came on a three-play, 57-yard drive that was extended by two Florida State penalties.
A 40-yard touchdown pass from King to Dee Wiggins increased Miami's second quarter lead to 28-3.
Miami made it five touchdowns on its five first half drives as Donald Chaney, Jr., scored from two yards out to increase the Hurricanes' second quarter lead to 35-3 with 3:37 remaining before halftime. Borregalas increased their lead to 38-3 with a 30-yard field goal at the conclusion of the first half.
Blackman led the Seminoles into the end zone for the first time in the game on the opening drive of the second half as he connected on a 12-yard pass to Camren McDonald. It was McDonald's first career touchdown reception and Blackman's 43rd career passing touchdown. Blackman ranks 10th in school history with 43 career touchdown passes.
"At halftime, Coach (Chris) Thomsen talked to us about playing the next play," said McDonald. "The only play that matters is the next play so we can't have one play that's going to make up the difference in the game. But one play, after the next play, after the next play and slowly but surely we'll be able to cut into the lead. I think we just had a one-play mentality coming out at half and that helped us."
After Florida State's defense held Miami scoreless in the third quarter, the Hurricanes upped their lead to 45-10 on a 5-yard scoring run by Chaney, Jr., with 14:57 to play in the final quarter.
"Coach Norvell is our leader," said McDonald. "Every time he is not here is significant but I wouldn't say that's anexcuse for guys losing control of their emotions. I think, for the most part, guys handled their emotions pretty wellon the sideline today. Coach Norvell not being there is significant because he is our program's leader and he is agood source of energy on the sideline in the way that he conducts himself. You always feel that the situation isunder control when Coach Norvell is there. It was significant (him not being on the sideline) but it wasn'tinsurmountable. We could have overcome it."

Football Takes Down JSU 41-24.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Redshirt sophomore quarterback Jordan Travis directed five consecutive touchdown drives in the second and third quarters to lead Florida State to a come-from-behind 41-24 victory over Jacksonville State at Doak Campbell Stadium. The win was Florida State's first of the 2020 season and first under first-year head coach Mike Norvell. The Seminoles outscored the Gamecocks by 24 points in the second half after trailing by a 21-14 margin at halftime.
Travis completed 12-of-17 passes (both career highs) for a career-high 210 yards and one touchdown. He also totaled a career-high 11 rushing attempts for 48 yards and one touchdown. Freshman running back Lawrance Toafili totaled 12 rushes for 99 yards and one touchdown while Ontaria Wilson caught a career-high seven passes for 86 yards.
"It was a special feeling," said Travis. "I give thanks to the man upstairs and all of my teammates; I couldn't have done it without them."
Travis entered the game in the second quarter in relief of true freshman Tate Rodemaker. Rodemaker earned the first start of his career and completed 8-of-12 passes for 58 yards and one interception before giving way to Travis.
"It was a great feeling," continued Travis. "I've just got to keep working; keep getting better every single day. That's my main goal - to get better throwing the ball. That's my weakness right now. I've got to keep getting better and keep working."
Travis was very confident entering the game in the second quarter.
"Just go play football; go have fun and play football," said Travis about the advice he received from Coach Norvell and Offensive Coordinator Kenny Dillingham. "That's all you have to do is go out and have fun. If you are not having fun, if you are uptight, the game's not fun. I just went out there and tried to have a good time and do whatever I could do to help my team win."
Five different Seminoles scored at least one touchdown in the victory - Keyshawn Helton (one receiving touchdown), Travis (one rushing), La Damian Webb (two rushing), Toafili (one rushing) and Jashaun Corbin (one rushing).
"It was great to be back on the sideline with them," said Norvell. "The first quarter didn't necessarily start off like we envisioned. We told the team throughout the course of the week: ‘There's only so many moments that come along during the course of your career that you really look back to, where you see a moment where you decided to make a change. You decide to let that be a defining moment.' Tonight, down 21-7, we had that opportunity. It didn't go like we necessarily wanted to in the beginning but it did when we needed it to. To see our team respond, to see them have impact plays, I'm really proud of our guys.
"It was great to be in the locker room with them after the game. When you see the joy and the excitement of winning the game … it's been a challenge for these guys. They've been through a lot."
The Seminoles outgained the Gamecocks by a 531-307 margin in total yards; gained 200 yards more rushing (263-63) and passed for more yards than the visitors (268-244).
The Seminoles' defense was also able to get itself off of the field more often as it limited Jacksonville State to 3-of-10 third down conversions (30 percent). In addition, the Seminoles punted only three times on Saturday - after punting seven times in their first two games.
Jacksonville State struck first as Kolbi Fuqua intercepted Rodemaker's second pass of the day and returned it for a 13-yard touchdown.
Following a Florida State punt, the Gamecocks added to their lead on a 36-yard touchdown run by Josh Samuel for a 14-0 Jacksonville State lead. The touchdown run was the final play on a six-play, 69-yard touchdown drive.
Florida State, on the strength of a 41-yard touchdown pass from Travis to Helton at the 7:15 mark of the second quarter, cut the deficit in half. Travis found Helton sprinting down the middle of the field for his first career touchdown pass as a Seminole. Helton, who caught his second touchdown pass of the season, utilized his athletic ability to get behind two Jacksonville State defenders and muscle his way into the end zone.
Jacksonville State immediately answered with a 60-yard scoring drive of its own to increase its lead back to 14, at 21-7. The Gamecocks' six-play, 60-yard scoring drive was capped by a two-yard touchdown run by Zerrick Cooper.
The Seminoles scored on their second consecutive drive as Travis crossed the goal line on a 1-yard rush to cut the deficit to 21-14. Travis engineered a 13-play touchdown drive which was aided by two pass interference calls against the Gamecock defense. The two pass interference penalties cost Jacksonville State 28 yards during the Seminoles' 75-yard drive.
Florida State took the second half kickoff and scored its third touchdown of the game, and tied the game at 21-21.
Running back La'Damian Webb scored on a 15-yard run, the first touchdown of his career, as Florida State scored on its third consecutive drive. Travis was 2-for-2 passing on the drive for 53 yards - including a 48-yard strike to Tamorrion Terry for his longest catch of the season.
Terry caught six passes for 77 yards in his best performance of his redshirt junior season. His 48-yard grab to begin the third quarter allowed him to become the 15th Seminole in school history with 2,000 or more career receiving yards. Terry now ranks 14th in school history with 2,061 career receiving yards.
The see-saw battle continued as Jacksonville State answered immediately with a nine-play, 71-yard drive that resulted in a 21-yard field goal by Karajic - his second of the game - to give the Gamecocks a 24-21 advantage with 9:57 left to play in the third quarter.
Florida State took its first lead of the game on 13-yard scoring run by Toafili to give the Seminoles a 28-24 lead at the 5:41 mark of the third quarter. The run-dominated drive, which consumed 78 yards on 12 plays, saw 11 rushing attempts for 69 yards including Toafili's first career touchdown to put the Seminoles on top. Toafili rushed twice for 37 yards on the scoring drive.
Florida State increased its lead to 34-24 on a six-yard scoring run by Webb - his second of the quarter. Webb entered the game with 39 yards on 13 carriers in one game as a Seminole. He totaled 43 yards on seven carries in Florida State's first win of the season to go along with his first two touchdowns.
Running back Jashaun Corbin closed out the Seminoles' highest scoring game since a 49-12 win over Alabama State on Nov. 16, 2019 with a bruising two-yard scoring run with 2:18 left to play. Corbin's touchdown allowed him to become the fifth different Seminole with a touchdown against the Gamecocks.
Fittingly, the Seminoles' defense turned Jacksonville State over on downs for the final margin of victory.
Following the win, Helton spoke about his QB.
"He's electric," Helton said of Travis. "He's been doing that week-in and week-out for us. He approaches the work the same each and every day. I'm proud of him; he deserved everything he got today."

Football Battles Notre Dame in 42-26 Loss.
by Chuck Walsh
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Quarterback Jordan Travis threw for 204 yards and ran for a career-high 96 yards in the first start of his career, but No 5 Notre Dame outscored Florida State by a 42-26 margin in the first meeting between the Seminoles and the Irish as members of the ACC at Notre Dame Stadium.
Florida State (1-3, 0-3, ACC) totaled three touchdowns by three different players, scored on three touchdowns on four trips into the red zone and committed only one turnover. Notre Dame (3-0, 2-0 ACC), which is playing as a member of a conference for the first time in the history of its program, won its second ACC game following a season-opening victory over Duke.
Travis completed 13-of-24 passes for 204 yards as he surpassed the 200 yard passing mark for the second consecutive week. He threw for a career-high 210 yards in Florida State's victory over Jacksonville State on Oct. 3. His 96 yards rushing surpassed his previous career-high of 94 rushing yards against Boston College on Nov. 9, 2019.
"I did alright (tonight)," said Travis. "There's a lot of room for improvement once again; I made mistakes that I have to correct and we are going to get back to work this week and try to correct them and see how this week goes."
Wide receiver Tamorrion Terry caught a season-high nine passes for a season-high 146 yards and his first touchdown of 2020. Travis led the Seminoles in rushing with his career-high 19 carries. La'Damian Webb gained 59 yards on 13 carries and scored his third touchdown in the last two weeks.
Florida State's defense held Notre Dame to seven points and 189 total yards (113 rushing and 76 passing) in the second half after surrendering 35 points and 365 total yards (240 rushing and 125 passing) in the first half.
"Congratulations to Notre Dame, they did a really good job tonight," said Seminole Head Coach Mike Norvell. "They made the plays necessary to be successful in the game. You are disappointed with the outcome. I thought our guys battled to the end. A lot of work goes into each and every game that we have the opportunity to play and it's unfortunate that we weren't able to apply some of the things throughout the course of the game to put ourselves in the best position to be successful.
"We struggled to stop the running game. We failed to convert on third downs offensively. Missed a couple opportunities throughout the course of the contest, but I thought our guys did battle. I was very proud of them, even there at the end - down 16, Notre Dame had the ball down at the goal line and the guys continued to fight to keep them out of the end zone so we could get another possession and another opportunity."
Norvell was pleased with Travis' performance.
"I thought he (Travis) played extremely tough," said Norvell. "He had a lot of different looks; a lot of things that were thrown his way. I thought he made some really good decisions and there are some things that he'll be able to learn from. It was a gutsy performance. He carried the ball a good number of times throughout the game. I thought he definitely provides a great dynamic for us. I thought Travis played hard, prepared well and continued to grow."
Florida State scored first as it took advantage of an early Notre Dame fumble (which was recovered by Asante Samuel, Jr.) to take the first lead of the game on a 42-yard field goal by Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Notre Dame countered on the next possession to take the lead with less than five minutes having been played. Following the kickoff, Irish running back Kyren Williams ripped off a 65-yard run to give his team field position on Florida State's 10-yard line. Notre Dame scored on an eight-yard pass from quarterback Ian Book to tight end Michael Mayer.
Following a Florida State punt, Notre Dame increased its lead to 14-3 on a 46-yard touchdown run by Williams for his second touchdown of the first quarter. The ensuing extra point gave Notre Dame an early 11-point lead. Williams' touchdown came at the end of a five-play, 76-yard drive that took all of 2:19.
Opportunistic once again, Florida State capitalized on a second Notre Dame fumble (this time on a Florida State punt) to close its early deficit. Travis scored on a designed 4-yard run for his second touchdown of the season. After taking the ball over on Notre Dame's 19, Travis took the Seminoles to the end zone on just three plays to cut the deficit to 14-10.
Florida State capped off a wild, high-scoring first quarter and took its first lead of the game on a 48-yard touchdown pass from Travis to Terry to put the Seminoles up 17-14. Terry got loose down the sideline for his first touchdown reception of the season and the 18th touchdown catch of his Seminole career. He moved into a tie for 13th place in school history with Travis Rudolph (2014-16) and Craphonso Thorpe (2001-04) for career touchdown receptions at Florida State with the scoring catch.
"He (Tamorrion) had a great game," said Travis. "I gave him the ball and he made great plays every single time."
Williams found the end zone for Notre Dame for a second time at the 12:27 mark of the second quarter to put Notre Dame up by a 21-17 score. He scored on a 1-yard end around for his fourth rushing touchdown of the season.
Notre Dame increased its lead to 28-17 on its longest scoring drive on the night - 81 yards on four plays - with a 45-yard touchdown scoring run by Williams. It was Williams' second rushing touchdown of the game.
After a 26-yard field goal by Fitzgerald cut Florida State's deficit to 28-20, Notre Dame closed the half with their fifth touchdown - a 6-yard pass from Book to Braden Lenzy.
Travis engineered a strategic 7-play, 75-yard touchdown scoring drive on Florida State's first possession of the second half to pull the Seminoles to within 35-26. The drive was highlighted by a 30-yard reception by Terry, two catches for 24 yards by wide receiver Ontaria Wilson and was culminated by a seven-yard rushing touchdown by running back La'Damian Webb. The touchdown was Webb's third of the season. Florida State attempted a 2-point conversion but Travis's pass to Terry fell incomplete in the back of the end zone.
Book matched Florida State's offensive execution on Notre Dame's first drive of the second half. He led the Irish on an 8-play, 73-yard touchdown drive to put Notre Dame up, 42-26. Book called his own number and scored his first rushing touchdown of the game.
"This football team is continuing to grow," said Norvell. "We are continuing to work our way through our process and I definitely believe in what the future holds. We just have to do a better job in all aspects - players, coaches, everybody - in applying the lessons that we are learning and the things that we are implementing throughout the course of the week. When you play good opponents you have to apply that for 60 minutes. There were some bright moments, but obviously we didn't get the job done.
"At the end of the day, this is about going out there and competing to be the best that you can possibly be in all aspects.
Travis agreed with Norvell's assessment of the outcome.
"There is always room for improvement," said Travis. "We've just got to get to work this week and get better. We just have to go out every single game and play football. We've got to correct our own mistakes once again. It's the little things that matter and we've got to get back to work. I'm learning that I have to get down and protect myself. I have to do a lot better because there were hits that were unnecessary today that I didn't have to take and I could have gotten down and I have to work on that.
"We should have these expectations, we should be winning. We are a good team. There are little things that matter over and over, we make little mistakes that matter so much and it cost us a couple of touchdowns today. Starting from me - there are mistakes that I made that need to be corrected."

Football Takes Down No. 5 UNC.
by Chuck Walsh
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - This was just what Florida State and first-year Head Coach Mike Norvell needed.
The Seminoles took a 31-7 halftime lead and earned a hard-fought 31-28 win over No. 5 North Carolina - the Seminoles' first win over a top-five ranked team since a 31-27 win over No. 5 ranked Notre Dame on October 18, 2014. The win was Florida State's first over a ranked team since a 22-21 win over No. 22 Boston College on November 17, 2018.
The Seminoles' victory marked the first time since October 16, 1965 that an unranked Florida State team beat a top-five ranked team in Doak Campbell Stadium (10-3 win over No. 5 Georgia).
Florida State (2-3, 1-3 ACC) gave Norvell his first career ACC win and gave North Carolina (3-1, 3-1 ACC) its first loss of the season. The Seminoles' victory also kept Florida State alumnus Mack Brown winless over the school where he played collegiately as a running back in 1972 and 1973 (0-10).
Quarterback Jordan Travis completed eight passes for 191 yards and one touchdown and ran 16 times for a career-high 107 yards and two touchdowns. Running back La'Damian Webb rushed 12 times for a career-best 109 yards.
It was Florida State's defense that saved the day and the victory. The defense stopped North Carolina on downs on its final drive of the game to secure the victory. Florida State limited the Tar Heels to 184 yards rushing - only 34 yards rushing in the second half. North Carolina entered the game averaging 245 yards rushing yards per game and had scored nine rushing touchdowns in its first four games. The Tar Heels managed just one rushing touchdown in Saturday's game.
"I'm so very proud of our football team," said Norvell. "There has been plenty of adversity that has shown up throughout this year, throughout the course of the early part of the season but these guys believe in what we are doing. Coming off of last week, we saw moments, we saw flashes, we saw a team that was playing harder and really trying to work to play together. This week, we challenged them throughout the course of the week because we needed to see that consistency show up. I thought this was our best week of preparation.
"To go out there against a top-five opponent I thought we started incredibly fast. Our guys had tremendous energy, really fueling off of each other on both sides of the ball."
Florida State scored first following a blocked punt by Ja'Khi Douglas after the Seminoles' defense forced North Carolina to a three-and-out on its first possession of the game. Travis scored in a 23-yard keeper on their first play from scrimmage to give Florida State its first lead in the first quarter of a game for the third time in its first five games.
With another blocked punt later in the game, the Seminoles lead the nation with five blocked kicks.
"The two blocked punts really set the standard of how we wanted to play and how aggressive we wanted to be," said Norvell.
Florida State extended its lead to 10-0 on a 24-yard field goal by Ryan Fitzgerald.
Florida State moved to a 17-0 on a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Travis - his second score of the night. Travis directed a nine-play, 75-yard drive with 3:29 left to play before halftime to allowed the Seminoles to comfortably take their largest halftime lead of their first five games of the season. He completed two passes for 43 yards to Keyshawn Helton on the drive including a momentum-gaining 39-yard completion that gave Florida State a first down at North Carolina's 12 yard line.
"Jordan is an incredible competitor," said Norvell. "He made some unbelievable plays tonight. He got limited a little bit later in the game; we tried to be smart with what all we were asking him to do. He led this offense. I think there is a great deal of confidence in the job that he does and honestly, how he was able to extend some plays tonight and what he did as a runner, and decisions (he made).
"He's a great leader for this team."
Travis has now scored four rushing touchdowns this season with at least one coming in three consecutive games.
"I feel 100 percent, I feel great," said Travis following the victory. "There is no one who could have kept me off the field. I was going in with my boys. They were fighting for me, so I've got to fight for them. I'm very thankful we got the win.
"I feel very comfortable but I couldn't feel comfortable without the guys in front blocking. That's where it starts. It starts in the trenches. They gave me all day to sit back there and make plays and the receivers are making great plays. There is no reason not to be comfortable in this offense. I've got my guys behind my back, pushing me and telling me that they trust me. It's a great feeling. I've got to keep them moving, that's the main thing, to keep them moving and getting more comfortable. Because there is still room for improvement in every aspect. I've just got to keep working and getting better."
Joshua Kaindoh turned in what can be considered the biggest defensive play of Norvell's first season at Florida State as he intercepted a Sam Howell pass and returned it for a touchdown and a 24-0 Seminole lead. The interception was the first of Kaindoh's career.
"On the pick-6, when they had four strong and one on the backside, I kept getting caught on that play early in the game," said Kaindoh. "On the sideline, I was talking with one of my coaches and I knew it was coming up when I saw them lineup like that. Instead of running and trying to rush, the quarterback threw the ball and I just ran."
Kaindoh also spoke on the difference of the Seminoles' defense against North Carolina as compared to earlier in the season.
"It started in practice," said Kaindoh. "We came back after Norte Dame and we just made up our in our minds that we would practice harder."
North Carolina got on the scoreboard on a 1-yard rushing score by Javonte Williams with just 1:02 remaining before halftime. His touchdown brought the Tar Heels to with 24-7.
Travis, though, wasn't finished with his first half magic.
Growing more and more comfortable with each play during his third career start, Travis directed a five-play, 75-yard yard touchdown scoring drive which he finished with a 12-yard touchdown pass to tight end Camren McDonald. Travis rushed twice for 30 yards and completed a 33-yard pass to wide receiver Warren Thompson as he surgically moved the Seminoles down the field. His first touchdown pass of the night came as he extended the touchdown scoring play with his legs before finding McDonald in the back of the end zone with a perfectly placed pass. The touchdown was McDonald's second receiving touchdown of the season.
Florida State's 31 points were the most in a first half since scoring 56 first half points in a 77-6 thrashing of Delaware State on November 18, 2017. It was the Seminoles' most points in the first half of an ACC game since scoring 38 in the first two quarters of a 59-3 win over Syracuse on November 16, 2013.
North Carolina pulled to within 10 at 31-21 as it outscored the Seminoles by a 14-0 margin in the third quarter. The Tar Heels scored two touchdowns on a pair of Sam Howell scoring passes. His first touchdown pass of the night was a 38-yard pass to Javonte Williams (coupled with a two-point conversion) and his second was a 33-yard scoring pass to Beau Corrales (the two-point conversion was stopped by the Seminole defense).
The Tar Heels closed the gap to just three on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Howell to Dyami Brown to cut the Seminoles' lead to 31-28. Howell completed just three passes on the 80-yard drive but his final two completions on the drive were for 34 yards and the touchdown for Brown.
North Carolina had one last chance to tie or take the lead as they started their final drive with 2:30 on the clock on their own 22 yard line. The Heels drove the ball down to the FSU 41 but three consecutive incompletions sealed the win. The fourth down incompletion marked the third-fourth down the Noles successfully defended in the game.
"It was the greatest feeling I've ever felt in my life to see the defense come up like that," said Travis.
"It went down to the last play," said Novell. "I'm so honored to coach this group and to see the response that they had because it's been challenging. It's been challenging in every aspect. They just continue to respond and I'm really proud of those guys. To see that reaction (after the game) and to see them in the locker room, the celebrations - that was pretty special."
Defensive back Jaiden Lars-Woodbey was happy for his teammates in earning the win.
"Tonight was very rewarding," said Lars-Woodbey. "We came out and we did what we had to do. I think that says a lot about us as a defense. It's real simple, we came out here and we did what we have to do. It was everybody doing their job and playing together. That was one of the main things we talked about all week - playing together and everybody making sure they do what they need to do."

Football Drops One On The Road To Louisville.
by Chuck Walsh
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville scored on its first five possessions of the game and held Florida State under 26 points scored for the first time in four games as the Cardinals took a 48-16 win over the Seminoles at Cardinal Stadium. Florida State limited Louisville to just 17 second half points but was unable to recover from a 31-14 halftime deficit.
Florida State (2-4 overall, 1-4 ACC) was led by quarterback Jordan Travis who threw for 118 yards and one touchdown and three running backs - Lawrance Toafili, La'Damian Webb, Jashaun Corbin - who all rushed for more than 60 yards. Louisville (2-4 overall, 1-4 ACC) won its first ACC game of the season and defeated Florida State for just the third time since joining the ACC for the 2014 season.
Travis completed 14-of-32 passes for 141 yards and one touchdown in the third start of his career. He threw for one touchdown and ran for one touchdown - the fourth consecutive game he has accounted for both a running and a throwing touchdown in the same game.
Freshman quarterback Chubba Purdy made his first appearance as a Seminole as he entered the game in the fourth quarter in relief of Travis.
Linebacker Emmett Rice led the Seminoles with eight total tackles, one tackle for loss, a quarterback hurry and one pass break up.
"We got off to a good start early," said Head Coach Mike Norvell. "We couldn't consistently put together drives. Defensively, we gave up way too many explosives; some missed tackles, some explosive runs, and a couple of plays in man-to-man coverage. That's a talented and explosive offense that we faced and we didn't do much to slow them down today. On special teams - we needed that to be a big impact for us and we weren't able to get our return game going. Not a performance that's reflective of what we, what I expected, and obviously we've got a lot of work to do within our program. We have to continue to learn from these lessons, these opportunities."
Florida State scored a touchdown on its first drive for the third time this season as Travis directed a 7-play, 65-yard yard drive following the opening kickoff. Travis completed one of three passes on the drive but it was a 30-yard catch and run by Camren McDonald that got the drive started. From there, it was Travis using his legs with two carries for 24 yards including a 15-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 Seminole lead.
Louisville answered on its first drive to tie the game at seven. The drive was highlighted by a 66-yard reception by Tutu Atwell on a pass over the middle from quarterback Malik Cunningham. Javian Hawkins scored on a nine-yard run to tie the game.
Following a Florida State punt, Louisville took a 14-7 lead as Hawkins scored his second rushing touchdown in the first quarter. He took a handoff, reversed field and found daylight for a touchdown 70-yards downfield. Hawkins' rush was the longest of the season against Florida State's defense.
Cunningham led Louisville on a third consecutive touchdown scoring drive to give the Cardinals a 21-7 lead with just under three minutes to go in the opening quarter. He found tight end Ean Pfeifer for a 13-yard score for his second receiving touchdown of the season.
Louisville upped its lead to 28-7 on a 58-yard pass from Cunningham to Hawkins - marking the fifth time this season the pair has hooked-up on a touchdown scoring pass - with 12:47 to play before halftime.
"We knew that this team (Louisville) had big-play capability," said Norvell. "If you let them get into space there's a chance that they could really make you pay. Obviously, that happened with some missed tackles. It did not allow us to play the way that we were capable of. We are a team that is a continued work in progress; we understand what it is to play winning football. We've seen it. We've seen flashes of it. We've seen moments. Right now we are not playing consistent enough to be able to sustain that. We've got to continue to work and learn lessons and it's got to show up on game day."
Florida State cut its deficit in half as Travis took to the air and found Ontaria Wilson on a 4-yard touchdown pass to pull the Seminoles to within 28-14. The touchdown catch was Wilson's first of the season and second of his career. Travis marched the Seminoles 76 yards on 15 plays on a drive that culminated in a touchdown on a fourth down play. Webb totaled 35 yards on three rushing attempts on the scoring drive.
"It's all about us," said Travis. "We made a lot of mistakes today. We've got to correct them and get back to work. We've got two weeks to get back to work and get better. That's what we have to do.
"We've got to get better. It's not about Louisville or anybody that we play. It's about us. We've got to get more consistent, starting from me. We have to get back to work this week. We've got to work on our confidence; I feel like our confidence isn't there. We have to be consistent, that's the main thing."
Norvell has confidence in his quarterback.
"Jordan was a little banged up this last week," said Norvell. "He did a good job of practicing and working through that. Obviously, as someone that is as dynamic with his legs as he is, and to be able to extend plays during those opportunities, we want him to be smart, we want him to get what he can get and keep that playmaking ability that he has. But that was part of today.
"We challenged our guys this week to go out there and push themselves to improve in all aspects. The same things that have shown up early in the season are still showing up. We've got to reevaluate the way that we are holding the guys to that standard of what we expect. Obviously, I didn't have the team prepared to play to the level that they are capable of today. That goes on me and it will be corrected and we will continue to grow."
Norvell continues to expect improvement.
"I want to see growth," said Norvell. "I want to see application of lessons. At the end of the day, there are going to be mistakes that show up. When you have a point of emphasis on something, it needs to get corrected; you have something that you've seen and you've lived that keeps you from being successful and playing to your capabilities, there needs to be a change. I can tell you that we are working our tails off at practice every day and in meetings and addressing things individually and collectively as a group. In the moment, with all the right intentions, we have got to make sure that we are playing the game the way it's supposed to be played and that's with passion, that's with discipline, that's with unbelievable effort and we've got to trust the techniques and the fundamentals of what is being taught."

Football Final: FSU 17 Pitt 41.
by Chuck Walsh
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State showed flashes of brilliance early in taking a 14-3 first quarter lead, but Pitt outscored the Seminoles by a 38-3 margin over the final three quarters and took a 41-17 win at Doak Campbell Stadium. The Seminoles lost Jordan Travis, their starting quarterback at halftime, and were unable to keep up with the Panthers' defense in the second half.
Florida State fell to 2-5 overall (1-5 ACC) while Pitt improved to 4-4 overall (3-4 ACC).
Travis scored a rushing touchdown for the school-record fifth consecutive game and completed 11-of-18 passes for 106 yards and totaled 83 yards on 14 rushes. Freshman Chubba Purdy completed 12-of-28 passes for 38 yards in the first extended playing time of his career. Camren McDonald caught a career-high seven passes for a career-high 61 yards to lead nine different Seminoles caught at least one pass.
"I thought going into the contest, we got off to a good, early start," said Florida State Head Coach Mike Norvell. "We were able to establish the run and hit some big plays early. I thought our defense came out playing with a lot of energy but unfortunately, we had a couple of guys that went down during the contest. We kind of got overwhelmed a little bit by their defensive forcing unit. They did a good job of creating pressure and we weren't able to get anything established there in the second half."
Pitt's defense was credited with seven sacks, five quarterback hurries and three interceptions as they harassed a trio of Florida State quarterbacks throughout the game.
"We were not able to re-establish the run game (in the second half) and they did a good job sending their pressure packages with how they were attacking us," said Norvell. "I felt good being able to get points going into halftime, but unfortunately, we weren't able to get anything started. We put the defense in some really bad situations tonight with field position and some turnovers that we committed."
Pitt broke on top on the first drive of the game with a 51-yard field goal by Alex Kessman to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
Florida State answered quickly to take a 7-3 lead as Travis engineered a 75-yard scoring drive that culminated in a one-yard scoring run by tight end Wyatt Rector. For Rector, a transfer from Western Michigan, it was the second carry and first touchdown of his career. The drive covered 75 yards in 10 plays and included two rushes for 15 yards and three-of-four passing for 33 yards by Travis.
Travis put the Seminoles ahead 14-3 on an 88-yard touchdown run - the longest of his career. On a designed run for the redshirt sophomore, he followed a huge hole through the left side of the line and outran the Pitt defense from one side of the field to the other. It marked the fifth consecutive game that he earned a rushing touchdown - a record for consecutive games with a rushing touchdown by a Seminole quarterback.
For Travis, the 88-yard touchdown scoring run was the longest by a quarterback in school history and longest by a Seminole since a 94-yard touchdown run by Dalvin Cook against Wake Forest in 2015.
"I thought Jordan was playing well," said Norvell. "They got some pressure on him in the second quarter and we had some negative plays that showed up. That was the challenge. We knew coming into the game that we had to stay ahead of the chains, keep manageable situations. We missed out on a couple of third and a couple of fourth down opportunities that ended up being really big in the course of the game."
Following an interception by A.J. Woods, Pitt closed its scoring gap to 14-10 with a 1-yard run by reserve quarterback Nick Patti. The Panthers had to go only 32 yards on four plays following the interception.
"I thought he (Jordan) did some good things early," said Norvell. "Made some throws, obviously a couple of dynamic plays as a runner. I thought he played solid but some negative plays really kind of tacked up against us."
Pitt re-took the lead midway through the second half on the second rushing touchdown of the game for Patti. He scored on a 2-yard run as part of a goal-line package that gave the Panthers a 17-14 advantage.
Kenny Pickett, the Panthers' starting quarterback, increased Pitt's lead to 24-14 on a 10-yard scoring run just over two minutes before halftime. Pickett found a running lane over the right side of his offensive line for the third rushing touchdown by a Panther quarterback in the first half.
Florida State's Parker Grothaus closed out the scoring in the first half with a 47-yard field goal to bring the Seminoles to within 24-17.
Pitt increased its lead to 31-17 following its second interception of the game on Florida State's first possession of the second half. Running back Vincent Davis capped a two-play, 2-yard drive with a 4-yard rushing touchdown.
Pitt upped its lead to 34-17 on a 19-yard field goal by Kessman.
The Panthers were held to a field goal on the drive following a stellar goal line stand by the Seminoles' defensive line. Florida State stopped Pitt's offense on three consecutive plays from inside the 1-yard line to stay within striking distance.
"I was pleased with our defense on the goal line stand to force them into a field goal," said Norvell. "I thought our defense continued to have good energy throughout while trying to do everything they could to make that play and give us that boost."
Chubba Purdy relieved an injured Travis and played the majority of the second half at quarterback for the Seminoles.
"I was actually really calm, trying to go through my reads and making sure my alignment and my assignments were perfect and just making sure I was going in there and doing my job," said Purdy. "I was trying to go through my reads at first and I felt pressure. They (Pitt) were doing some twist game and doing what they usually do. I was trying to make plays.
"Ever since I started playing football, my dad and my family taught me to be a leader. Whatever I am going to do or how my body language is that's going to feed off to my teammates and how they are going to play. I was trying to be positive and really trying to be an upbeat person in tonight's game."
The Seminoles were led on defense by defensive back Jarvis Brownlee who totaled a career-high eight tackles (six solo) and one tackle for loss. Linebacker Amari Gainer, Florida State's leading tackler on the season totaled seven tackles.

Football Falls at NC State.
by Chuck Walsh
RALEIGH, N.C. - Florida State quarterback Chubba Purdy threw for 181 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start and wide receiver Ontaria Wilson caught a career-high seven passes for 117 yards but Florida State fell to NC State, 38-22, at Carter Finley Stadium.
Florida State fell to 2-6 overall (1-6 in the ACC) and plays host to Clemson on Saturday at 12:00 at Doak Campbell Stadium. NC State improved to 5-3 overall (5-3 in the ACC).
Purdy helped the Seminoles outscore the Wolfpack by a 19-17 margin in the second half. He threw for two second half touchdowns and ran for 54 yards as Florida State's primary quarterback for the first time in his career.
"I'm proud of our team, the way they competed to the end," said Head Coach Mike Norvell. "There were a lot young guys with some who were getting their first major experience throughout the year. The energy that was on the sideline, the belief of continuing to go out there and continuing to compete. It was great to see them make a little rally at the end. The guys on that sideline believed we were going to find a way to come back and put ourselves in position to be successful."
After spotting NC State the 14-0 first quarter lead, Florida State got on the scoreboard via a 48-yard field goal by Parker Grothaus. The field goal for Grothaus was his third in four attempts and second of 48 yards or more this season.
NC State upped its lead to 21-3 on a four-yard touchdown run by Bailey Hockman with 1:32 remaining in the first half. The third scoring drive in five possessions for the Pack covered 65 yards on eight plays in just over two minutes.
The Wolfpack increased its lead to 28-3 on an 18-yard scoring run by Zonovan Knight at the 10:34 mark of the third quarter.
Florida State cut into the deficit on a 28-yard rushing touchdown by Jashaun Corbin with just over five minutes left to play in the third quarter. The scoring run came out of the Wildcat offensive package. Florida State was unsuccessful in the two-point play to make the score 28-9.
Thomas earned his second receiving touchdown of the night on a 24-yard catch and run on Hockman's 24th completion of the game to up NC State's lead to 35-9.
Following the first career interception by Jarvis Brownlee, Florida State and Purdy utilized a quick-strike offense to begin to climb back into the game. Purdy connected with Wilson on a 69-yard touchdown pass to bring the Seminoles to within 35-16. The touchdown pass was the first of Purdy's career while the scoring catch was the second touchdown of the season for Wilson.
"We were able to complete a couple of explosives there late," said Norvell. "Chubba competed extremely hard. He was able to make plays not only with his arm but with his legs. You can see him really starting to grow up. It was one of those games that was a challenge especially when we got behind.
"You can see the confidence he (Chubba) has with each rep continuing to grow … the way that he is communicating, the way that he is working to manage the offense. He's going to continue to grow. I thought Chubba did some nice things especially there late."
NC State closed out its scoring on a 32-yard field goal by Christopher Dunn to increase its lead to 38-16. The five-minute drive kept the Seminoles rejuvenated offensive off of the field and ran the game clock to below five minutes remaining to be played.
Florida State closed out is scoring on Purdy's second touchdown pass of the game - a 24-yard completion to Warren Thompson who displayed his athleticism to pull the ball in for the score.
"In the second half, I feel like we started opening up a lot of our plays that we were doing during the week," said Purdy. "I feel like in the second half we really let it loose."
Purdy was pleased with earning the first starting assignment of his career.
"It felt good," said Purdy. "It felt really nice to go in starting fresh and knowing this game depends on me. However I play, and my team plays, that's what the outcome is going to be."
With three weeks remaining in the regular season, Norvell continues to see improvement in his team.
"We are going to continue to work, we are going to continue to get better; I believe in these guys," said Norvell. "I see some guys that are growing up; I see some leadership emerging within our team. We have to get better in all aspects."

Noles Explode For 56 In Win Over Duke.
by Stephen Stone
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Churning up 324 yards on the ground, Florida State Football got back to its winning ways with an impressive run game as it ran past Duke, 56-35, on Saturday night in its final home game of the season at Doak Campbell Stadium.
The Seminoles (3-6, 2-6) delivered 524 yards of total offense, as quarterback Jordan Travis proved to be the catalyst with 192 yards passing along with two TDs while adding 90 yards on the ground and another rushing score. Lawrance Toafili led FSU's ball-carriers with 117 yards rushing, which was highlighted by a game-breaking 73-yard touchdown run in the second half.
Six of FSU's eight touchdowns scored came on the ground, with running back Jashaun Corbin tacking on three scores along with 72 rushing yards. Treshaun Ward added another TD.
Ja'Khi Douglas broke lose in the receiving game, adding 77 yards with two touchdowns. In FSU's most productive outing of the year on offense, the Noles averaged 8.2 yards on 64 plays.
FSU will look to close out the season with some momentum when it travels to Wake Forest for a matchup on Saturday, Dec. 19, at Truist Field in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Seminoles came out of the second half making the proper adjustments as they out-gained Duke 109-30 in the third quarter. Momentum swung in FSU's favor on Duke's first drive of the second half when quarterback Chase Brice scrambled to the sidelines and fumbled on a big hit, which was recovered by FSU's Amari Gainer at the Duke 29. Travis rushed up the gut two plays later for a 27-yard score, making it 35-21.
Another score was tacked on when Corbin rushed for a three-yard touchdown on FSU's next drive. A resurgence in FSU's defense led to an extended Duke drive downfield that resulted in no points, and the quick-strike offense of the Seminoles struck again early in the fourth when Douglas parted the red sea with a 68-yard scoring grab from Travis to help FSU to a 49-21 lead with 13:15 left in the game.
Following a score by the Blue Devils, the Seminoles came right back when Toafili took a hand-off and raced down the middle of the field for a break-away 73-yard TD run, which was FSU's final score and the touchdown that put the game out of reach.
Florida State opened the scoring on the first drive of the game, as Douglas got into the end zone on the receiving end of a seven-yard pass from Travis. The seven-play, 75-yard drive was highlighted by a 25-yard run from Travis on the game's first play to get the Noles to midfield quickly.
FSU's next drive was capped by a 2-yard touchdown plunge from Corbin. Duke's subsequent possession ended with a tip-drill interception from senior defensive back Hamsah Nasirildeen, returning the ball to Duke's 14. The next play resulted in Corbin's second score of the game, a 14-yard gain into the end zone to help create a 21-0 lead.
Nasirildeen would end up leading the Seminoles with nine tackles.
A wild first quarter ended with the Seminoles holding a commanding 28-7 lead, punctuated by 26-yard touchdown run from Ward.
Things went back and forth a bit in the second quarter, but Duke was able to bust a long touchdown run when Mataeo Durant broke loose for a 64-yard score to cut the Blue Devil deficit to a couple TDs. Duke then forced back-to-back turnovers on the Seminoles and capitalized with a 12-play, 85-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run by Duke's Deon Jackson, continuing to chisel away at the FSU lead at 28-21 with 5:14 left in the second quarter.
While the score was close at the half at 28-21, FSU's second-half explosion on the offensive end was too much for the Blue Devils (2-9, 1-9) to handle. Durant led the Blue Devils on the ground with 127 rushing yards and a score, averaging 9.8 yards per carry.
