Greg Allen |
Pat Carter, 6-4, 230, TE, Sarasota - He's one that could come in and play early, according to FSU coaches...it may be even more realistic to say that they need Carter to perform like they think he can to strengthen the tight end position...caught 21 passes for 303 yards and three TDs as a senior...it's his blocking that has FSU coaches most excited though...has 4.6 speed in the 40 and benches 300 pounds...teammate of placekicker Derek Schmidt at Sarasota High School.
Brian Davis, 6-0, 195, LB, Tallahassee - One of three Tallahassee linebackers to sign with FSU...he and fellow FSU-recruit Mike Hittinger played side-by-side at Lincoln High...named to the first team 3A all-state squad and also named Big Bend Player of the Year by the Tallahassee Democrat...also picked up USA Today All-American honors...139 tackles as a senior and 349 in his career...high school coach Steve Harden calls him "a Willie Lanier type-a destroyer"...has 4.6 speed.
Dwayne Denson, 6-1, 220, TB, Norristown, Pa. - Heads the list of the blue chip running backs in the nation...named to the Parade and Adidas All-America teams although he missed three games with an injury...rushed for 1,200 yards in nine games...in the first game of his senior season he rushed for 235 yards in 21 carries and added five touchdowns...has 9.6 speed in the 100-yards...was the most coveted back in the nation on Nebraska's recruiting list as well as many other schools...has been promised that he will get a shot at tailback at FSU although he has fullback size-according to Chuck Amato, who recruited him, "most people who saw him on film think he's a franchise".
John Eaford, 6-2, 204, LB, Miami - Although his name doesn't appear on many state or regional lists, he did make the Parade All-American team as well as the USA-Today All-American team...has 4.6 speed in the 40 and has bench pressed 380 pounds...coaches expect him to round out at about 220 pounds once he gets in the program...best game of his senior year came against Killian High School when he recovered three fumbles and intercepted a pass...a good student with a 3 + grade point average.
David Etheridge, 6-2, 170, WR-P, Auburndale - Third team 4A all-state as a punter...with a redshirt year, he'll have two years after current punter Louis Berry graduates...punted for a 40.5 average as a senior but his preferred technique-minus shoes-is not allowed in Florida high school football...signed at FSU as a two-sport athlete and has permission to miss spring football to participate in track and field...high jumped 7-0 as a junior and 6-9 as a senior...father played basketball at the University of Florida.
Victor Floyd, 5-11, 180, RB, Pensacola - "The best natural athlete I've ever signed and that includes eight players off of Georgia's 1980 national championship team that I recruited" says offensive coordinator Wayne McDuffie...first team 3A all-state as well as honorable mention Adidas All-American and Orlando's Sweet 16 list...rushed for 1,500 yards in 176 carries as a senior, including games of 230 and 298 yards...that was his first year in football as his debut as a junior was set back with a dislocated shoulder...runs a 9.6 100 yards and a 21.6 220 yards...a .450 hitter in baseball.
Steve Gabbard, 6-5, 260, DT, Concord, N.C. - Has a lot of room to grow once he joins the FSU program...has great leg strength (515 pound squat press), good speed for a big man (4.8) and good jumping ability (28-29 inches)...was overshadowed by highly recruited Chuck Tabor, his partner on the line at defensive tackle, who chose Missouri...originally from Dayton, Ohio...wants to major in accounting with a law career in mind.
Terry Griggley, 5-11, 180, DB, Clearwater - A Parade All-American at running back although FSU coaches have indicated he'll be a defensive back...also made the Orlando Sentinel-Star's Sweet 16 list...had somewhat of a disappointing senior season after a super junior season...broke his thumb in the pre-season...Griggley's first decision was not what college to attend, but what sport to play...was the starting point guard on the Team Florida AAU team that won the national title in the 1983 summer...he can dunk a basketball easily although he's only 5-11...was named to the Sweet 16 basketball list also...has great speed (4.5)...one of his best friends is FSU receiver Hassan Jones, who played with him two years at Clearwater.
John Hadley, 6-5, 200, DB, Orlando - "Has speed, terrific range. He can cover twice the ground as the average guy can. And he likes to hit. We've never had a giant back there that can do all those things" says Jim Gladden, who successfully recruited the 6-5 player...was a third team 4A all-state pick and an honorable mention Sweet 16 player...runs a 9.9 100 yards, a 21.9 220 yards and high jumps 6-6...also was named to the Top 20 forwards list in the state...was also Evans' MVP in track...cousin Edmund Nelson plays for Pittsburgh Steelers...former teammate of Jamie Dukes at Evans...originally from New York.
Ed Harden, 6-2, 268, DT, Milledgeville, Ga. - Played several defensive positions in high school and may be best suited for noseguard at FSU...named one of the top four defensive linemen in the state of Georgia last year...attended same high school as senior linebacker Henry Taylor.
Felton Hayes, 6-1, 220, LB, Brandon - Made the third team on the state's 4A list for linebackers...also excelled in wrestling with a 10-2 record as a junior and second team all-state honors as a senior...former teammate of FSU tackle Stanley Scott...nominated for Mr. Brandon High School honor...nickname is "Darth Vader"..."he's muscular and will remind you of Henry Taylor" says recruiter Billy Sexton.
Mike Hittinger, 6-2, 220, LB, Tallahassee - Picked Florida State along with fellow Lincoln linebacker Brian Davis...was a first-team all-state selection after picking up 100 tackles...also made the Orlando Sentinel Star's Sweet 16 list...strong player with a 460 pound bench press that coaches say remind them of Dick Butkus...fractured a foot in the off-season running the stadium steps at FSU.
Joey Ionata, 6-2, 245, OL, Dunedin - Joins his brother John, a starting offensive tackle, at Florida State...can play both offense and defense but coaches will probably try him out on the offense first...has 4.7 speed...named second team 4A all-state as a defenseman...made the all-county team both on offense and defense.
Anthony Johnson, 6-4, 290, DT, Jacksonville - Biggest player inked by the Seminoles this year...although he didn't reap the honors some other offensive linemen did, coaches believe he's a sleeper...they'd like him to lose some weight and report in at 260...moves well for a big man (5.0) and is very strong (420 in the bench press)...if he comes in at a lower weight, some coaches have already said they think he'll be an early contributor.
Jason Kuipers, 6-2, 235, OL, Winter Haven - His signing gave FSU four players from Winter Haven on its roster...made third team all-state in the 4A category...will first have a shot at offensive line when he arrives on campus...may have the best fundamentals of all the offensive linemen FSU recruited...has thrown the shot put 56-61/2 and was the only junior to place in the 3A state meet his junior year...plans to major in pre-dental curriculum.
Paul McGowan, 6-1, 215, LB, Winter Park - This young man comes to FSU with a trail of honors...named first team all-state, All-South, USA-Today honorable mention All-America, Orlando Touchdown Club's Defensive Player of the Year...when he doubled on offense as a wingback, he carried 40 times for 400 yards...runs a 4.7 40-yard dash and ran on Winter Park's sprint relay...also won state championship with a 365 bench press in the 220 pound category...high school coach says he is the strongest player to come out of Winter Park...teammate of fellow FSU signee Mark Salva.
Tom O'Malley, 6-3, 225, TE, Darien, Conn. - After playing fullback and linebacker, O'Malley was switched to tight end as a senior...has good speed, running under a 4.7 40-yard dash, and has good hands...with more weight he could warrant a position switch, maybe to the interior line...also an excellent baseball player, he planned to spend the summer in Tallahassee playing semi-pro baseball.
David Palmer, 6-2, 212, LB, Tallahassee - Versatile athlete who became the first player ever to win the Tallahassee Quarterback Club's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year award in 1983...averaged 18 tackles a game on defense and also ran for 1,083 yards...picked up first team 2A all-state honors as well as All-Big Bend honors and honorable mention Sweet 16...has 4.7 speed...played at Florida High with redshirt freshman Martin Mayhew and is a long-time friend of FSU signee Stan Shiver of Tifton from Little League baseball days...an outstanding 3.9 student...father won the state championship in powerlifting's super heavyweight division in 1971...member of FCA.
Terry Nettles, 5-10, 187, CB, DeLand
Mark Salva, 6-2, 244, OG, Winter Park - Teammate of Paul McGowan at Winter Park where he earned second team 4A all-state honors...good speed for a big man and fundamentally sound...could also play offensive line where he would make a good pulling guard...second in state heavyweight weightlifting competition with a 350 pound press...played in North/South all-star game...heritage includes Phillipine, Brazilian, Russian and Polish.
Tracy Sanders, 6-1, 175, QB, Bradenton - May be FSU's quarterback of the future and could step in immediately and play as he fits perfectly into the new "freeze option" offense...high school defensive coordinator Mike Knowles says "he's got great speed, he's strong and can scramble. He's built exactly like Nebraska's Turner Gill"...in fact, he was headed to Nebraska before visiting FSU..gained 1,000 yards rushing and 1,200 passing and accounted for 25 TDs...named MVP of the state championship game...picked up honors that included quarterback of the All-South team, first team 4A all-state, Adidas honorable mention All-America and USA-Today honorable mention All-America...runs a 9.7 100-yard dash and can throw the ball 70 yards in the air...led his basketball team to a 23-2 record and the regional championships in 1983 and 1984.
Derek Schmidt, 5-11, 175, KS, Sarasota - Although he hit just six of 12 field goals his senior year, Florida State wanted him badly...most of those he missed were outside the 50-yard range...hit all of his 28 extra points and has never missed one in his career...named second team 4A all-state...his longest field goal was 49 yards...has reportedly kicked 69 yarders in practice...has had only two field goals blocked in five years of kicking...recruited by Ohio State, Nebraska and Miami...played in the Florida North/South all-star game...member of FCA.
Carlton Scott, 5-7, 165, WR, Chiefland - A barn-burner, Scott was the fastest man in the state the last two years...state 100 yard champion in 9.6 clocking...was recruited for both football and track and will miss spring practice each year...also has run a 22.1 220 yards and long jumped 24-91/2...made the first team 2A all-state team as a utility player...played QB for Chiefland, throwing for 680 yards and rushing for 710...named the Gainesville Sun's Player of the Year.
Stan Shiver, 6-2, 190, DB, Tifton, Ga. - He's a late bloomer that came on his senior year...Wayne McDuffie, who recruited him, says "he's one of the most vicious tacklers I've seen in high school football"...although he now lives in Georgia, his family lived in Tallahassee for 12 years before moving...it was then that he became close friends with fellow recruit David Palmer while playing Little League baseball...has 4.7 speed in the 40...has two brothers who have played on the college level; one played on last year's Northeast Oklahoma Junior College's national championship team while another plays baseball for Georgia Tech.

Stunning.
Seminoles overwhelm Pirates with tough defense and offense.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Striking swiftly and incredibly well, Florida State ripped out a stunning 48-17 success over East Carolina in its opening football game here Saturday night.
As 54,211 fans - fifth-largest turnout in Campbell Stadium history - looked on, the Seminoles moved smoothly with new quarterback Eric Thomas at the helm.
Thomas completed 12 of 19 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Greg Allen ran 17 times for 113.
In Bobby Bowden's 45th game in this stadium, his Seminoles presented him with victory No. 36 at home. It was also the eighth straight opening-game victory for Florida State in Bowden's time.
Tenacious in-the-clutch defense blunted East Carolina's attack, and also presented FSU's offense with golden opportunities. Among other things, Brian McCray and Eris Riley came up with key early interceptions. Later, Joe Wessel blocked a Pirate punt.
On an opening drive from its 20, Florida State jumped in front 3-0 on freshman Derek Schmidt's 26-yard field goal.
Allen sped wide for 9 yards on his first run of the season. Soon Thomas uncorked a 14-yard pass to Pete Panton. Pounding up the middle, Cletis Jones got 18 a couple of plays later, to the Pirate 28. Allen's running led to a first down at the 17.
But Allen lost 3 trying to go wide. A pass missed. Thomas got 10 on a third-down keeper. Then Schmidt came in for his first college kick ever, making good.
On East Carolina's second play from scrimmage, 225-pound Reggie Branch hit the middle, the rambled toward the sidelines - 28 yards to FSU's 38.
The defense stiffened smartly, linebacker Fred Jones grabbing the quarterback for a yard loss on third down, leaving the Pirates at the 35 following three runs. Whereupon, Jeff Heath put through a 52-yard field goal, tying it 3-3.
From their 17 after the kickoff, the Seminoles got quickly to the 42 on runs of 8 and 14 yards by Allen, But no more.
Louis Berry punted 45 yards - and an illegal-block penalty backed the visitors to their 7.
At the 13 on third, Darryl Gray sliced in to nab the quarterback for a loss of 5.
Florida State was positioned at East Carolina's 49 following a punt. In two carries, Tony Smith reached the 30. Jessie Hester hauled in a Thomas pass at the 17. Two runs by Smith, another by Rosie Snipes got a first down at the 6. From the 5, Snipes ran wide and scored easily. Schmidt's point made it 10-3.
Once again East Carolina had little trouble penetrating FSU territory, as Jimmy Walden sped 13 to the Seminole 46 on an option. But a personal foul set the Pirates back to their 39 on the last play of the opening quarter.
When quarterback Ron Jones threw, safety McCrary moved in for an interception, placing the Seminoles at their 48.
In four plays FSU reached the 16, with Allen's 13-yard run and an 11-yard pass to Darrin Holloman the biggies. Two plays later Holloman, on a reverse, scored easily from the 13.
FSU seemed in trouble when speedster Henry Williams fielded a kickoff, with an avenue ahead of him, but he bumped into a teammate, fumbled - and the Seminoles' Bruce Heggie recovered at the 14.
An errant pitchout lost 6 yards. Smith got just 3 on a run. But Thomas sailed a pass into the hands of Hassan Jones in the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown that, with Schmidt's point, brought it to 24-3.
From its 22, East Carolina crunched out a first down at its 33.
But Riley timed a deep pass perfectly and intercepted at the Seminole 32.
It was easy now.
Cletis Jones, on a pass, rolled for 22. Two Allen runs netted 15 to the 31. Then Hester snared a Thomas pass and scored on a 31-yard play.
The scored leaped to 31-3 with the second quarter not half over.
From its 23, East Carolina now moved methodically, getting the steady yardage on the ground until it reached Florida State's 40. Then it turned to passes. Three incompletions - and a punt to Florida State's 8.
Snipes ran for 1, then 6, then 15 to the 30. Herb Gainer caught a pass for 12.
About two minutes before halftime the Seminoles drew a 5-yard penalty for illegal procedure - and the significance of that was it was the first yardage stepped off on the Seminoles all evening. For an opener, they were playing a remarkably error-free game.
Berry soon got off his second punt, a nifty 55-yarder to the 7. The Pirates struggled up to their 40 before intermission caught them.
At this point Florida State showed 317 yards of offense with 198 running, including 78 by Allen on 11 carries. Thomas had completed 7 of 12 passes for 119 yards and a pair of touchdowns. East Carolina had completed one pass, out of 7 tries, and had had two intercepted.
East Carolina, in an opening third-quarter bid, needed about a foot on third down when it tried an option deep in the backfield and got tossed for a loss.
A punt - plus a clip on the runback - had the Seminoles in a hole at their 7. Out popped Allen to the 21.
That effort played out at the 37, as the Pirates - who often seemed to be keying on Allen - stopped the FSU star short. Berry punted 43 yards, to the 21.
On a busted play, quarterback Robbie Bartlett abruptly tore loose - 59 yards to FSU's 20.
It came to fourth down at the 16. On a fake field-goal try, holder Jeff Bolch reared up, rolled right and threw across the middle to a wide-open Jeff Patton at the goal line. Patton stepped happily into the end zone for the touchdown. Heath booted an extra point, cutting the score to 31-10.
An onside kick - following a penalty against FSU on the first effort - did not go far enough, and the Seminoles got a start from their 45.
A third-down pass for 12 to Hester gained the 37. Three chopping plays attained the 26. Third down at the 19, and Thomas passed to Panton at the 3. Sweeping wide, Allen dived over tacklers when confronted and got the touchdown that made it 38-10.
East Carolina maneuvered around in its own territory until punting time came. In ripped Joe Wessel to block the kick. And the Seminoles had another shot, from the Pirate 45.
A pass to Hassan Jones got 15. Two more runs reached the 9. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Holloman skipped away again on the reverse, scoring his second touchdown of the evening, bringing the score to 45-10.
With 11:40 left in the game, Kirk Coker moved in for his first quarterbacking action with the Seminole varsity. Allen got 12 - to go over 100 yards for the night. On his first carry, Cedric Jones broke away for 26 to the Pirate 43.
A few plays later, on fourth down at the 28, Schmidt kicked a 44-yard field goal, and it was 48-10.
Behind Ron Jones, the Pirates drove to the FSU 21. Garth Jax slipped through to sack the quarterback, but Jones came back with a 20-yard pass to Stefon Adams at the 8. Two plays later Walden took a pitchout and scored easily from the 5. Heath's point kick left it 48-17 with 3:34 left.

Jayhawks tomahawked.
LAWRENCE, KS - Before the kickoff Bobby Bowden had said this was a game in which Florida State's football team needed to take care of its own knitting.
If his Seminoles played their game, the coach was implying, no great need to worry.
Despite some improbable and mildly scary moments, Florida State attended to its knitting well enough here Saturday to throttle a poor University of Kansas team 42-16. It could have been worse. Easily.
And tailback Greg Allen, looking like a bona fide Heisman candidate despite a cut hand that hindered him, did some uncommon knitting.
As he ran 16 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns, the Milton senior checked in as Florida State's all-time leading rusher with a total of 3,044 yards, all-time leading scorer with 248 points, and all-time leader in all-purpose yardage with 4,271. (Dave Cappellen held the scoring record, while Larry Key had owned both the other marks.)
Moreover, Allen registered his 12th 100-yard rushing game with the Seminoles.
Now 2-0 with 3-1 Miami ahead in the Orange Bowl next Saturday, the Seminoles in the beginning were about as cool as the Kansas weather - 64 degrees at kickoff.
An estimated crowd of 38,600 sensed blood as their Jayhawks drove from the kickoff to a 3-0 lead on Dodge Schwartzburg's 31-yard field goal.
But on offense Florida State played a patient game throughout. By the end of the quarter FSU had slashed out a 7-3 lead that it never yielded.
Soon after it was 14-3.
But with Florida State poised - first down at the Kansas 4 - to make it 21-3, a fumble set the home team on fire. Behind tall, fast quarterback Mike Norseth - a splendid passer on occasion - the Jayhawks drove from that point and were within 14-10 range at halftime.
From the start Kansas made its intentions clear - throwing on the first play from scrimmage.
Big was a 28-yard toss from Norseth to John Holloway at the FSU 39 on the fourth play of this sunny, cool afternoon.
A pair of 11-yard passes keyed a first down at the 10. There a pass missed, a run got just 4, and linebacker Henry Taylor on third down ripped through to sack Norseth on the 15.
Schwartzburg, a senior place kicker from Ocala, booted a 31-yard field goal to put Kansas up 3-0.
From its 27 Florida State got just across the 50 as Greg Allen popped for 15 and Hassan Jones snared an Eric Thomas pass for 9.
But a penalty cost 5 yards, and the Seminoles could not recover. On third down Thomas could not find an open receiver and got sacked for a loss of 16 at his 30. A Louis Berry punt placed Kansas at its 24.
A pair of runs got the Jayhawks to their 48. Norseth, trying to pass, decided to run instead and found uncommonly wide room as he knocked off 30 yards to the FSU 28.
The defense came alive. A run was stopped cold. A pass failed. When Norseth threw again, linebacker Darryl Gray intercepted and returned 5 yards to the 30.
Chopping short runs by Cletis Jones and Rosie Snipes led to midfield. Jones carried twice more, to the Kansas 36. When things got sticky, Thomas, on a keeper, ran on third down to the 29 for a first down. On another big third down play, needing 10, he pitched out to Snipes for 11.
From the 15 - again on third down - Thomas passed into the end zone to Hassan Jones for an easy touchdown. Derek Schmidt kicked the point for a 7-3 Florida State lead.
A big run by Norseth - 22 yards - got Kansas to the 50 as the first quarter ran out.
Norseth threw a bomb that tailback Robert Mimbs was all set to grab at about the 10 when linebacker Henry Taylor did the expedient thing under the circumstances and interfered - an action that would have drawn a 15-yard penalty. But Kansas was holding on the play. Penalties offset each other.
Soon, however, Norseth popped a short pass over the middle for a first down. Then Holloway caught one for 25 to FSU's 15 before Eric Riley pulled him down. Otherwise, it would have been a touchdown.
The Jayhawks got no farther than the 11, on a first-down run. Two passes were futile. The Schwartzburg missed on a 28-yard try for a field goal, leaving it 7-3.
In six plays the Seminoles made it 14-3.
An 11-yard pass to Jessie Hester and an 18-yard delay run by Greg Allen reached the 50. Three plays later Cletis Jones shot up the middle, cut right and outran the defense - 40 yards for a touchdown. Schmidt again kicked a point.
From its 19, the home team got just five yards in three tries. A punt placed FSU at its 38.
Third down at the 45, and Thomas threw long to Hassan Jones - 51 yards to the Kansas 4.
On a pitchout, Snipes fumbled - and David Smith claimed the ball for Kansas at the 3.
With some heady work by Norseth, the Jayhawks worked the ball patiently up to their 30. Then the quarterback threw wide to Holloway.
Suddenly, the receiver was loose and rambling on a 70-yard scoring run. Billy Allen made a hard try but couldn't catch him. The clock showed 2:24 remaining in the half.
Florida State got a poor start, at its 15, following the kickoff.
The running game gained the 27. A pass to Greg Allen reached the 37 with 23 seconds to go. But FSU got little more, and at halftime a lead that might have been 21-3 was a close 14-10.
Interestingly, Kansas, at this point led in yardage, 280 to 265 with Norseth hitting 11 of 19 passes for 184 yards. Florida State had 166 on the ground, including 82 by Jones in nine carries.
Quickly, in the third quarter, Greg Allen's running lifted FSU from its 20 to the 43. A 16-yard throw to tight end Pat Carter reached the Kansas 35.
Two penalties, coupled with a sack of Thomas, blunted the bid. Berry's punt was a good one, placing the Jayhawks at their 10.
In four plays - two of them passes - Norseth had the Jayhawks at the 35. That effort played out at the 50.
When the punt came, Darrin Holloman got clobbered trying to catch it - and Kansas was penalized 15 to the 30 for interference.
Allen ran wide, for 18 to the 48. One play later a personal foul vaulted FSU to the Kansas 38. Thomas kept for 8, and Jones got a first down at the 26.
Third down at the 19, and Holloman, taking a pass at the 10, dodged tackling to scramble to the 1. Cletis Jones pounded across for the touchdown. Schmidt kicked another point, and it stood 21-10.
A 10-yard Gerald Nichols sack of Norseth had Kansas in a hole at its 16.
A couple plays later it came to 3rd and 16 at the 20. Norseth completed a short pass that was fumbled following the reception. The ball rolled forward, and Robert Mimbs recovered for Kansas at the 38.
There the passing game failed, and a penalty cost 5 yards. When Tom Becker went back to punt, he could not get a grip on the ball, and was buried at the 15.
But as Holloman ran a reverse, a flag fell and an illegal block set the Seminoles back to the 30. Two runs got FSU back to the 23 as the third quarter ended.
On a delay draw, Greg Allen hit off the left side toward the sidelines and scored easily on a 23-yard run. Schmidt made it 28-10.
Kansas couldn't move from its 20, as Nichols again sacked Norseth.
When Becker went back to punt, Joe Wessel ripped through to block the ball. Bruce Heggie picked it up and danced into the end zone on a 7-yard touchdown run.
Another Schmidt kick boosted it to 35-10.
A bit later Jerome McCoy's interception of a Norseth pass was rubbed out. Florida State had been offsides on the play. Two more Seminole infractions - one a personal foul - helped Kansas to FSU's 43. Mimbs on a run, reached the 26. A pass to Lyn Williams got 12 to the 14. Then, on a pitchout, Williams scored.
Norseth retreated deep, then threw into the end zone in a quest for two points. The ball fell harmlessly to the ground as the crowd screamed for an interference call that never came. The score was 35-16 with 9:30 left.
FSU started at the Kansas 48 following a futile onside kick.
On third-and-16 Thomas passed to Carter for 27 at the 25. On two runs, Allen reached the 11. Jones smashed to the 5, and Allen went wide for the touchdown.
Schmidt's boot brought it to 42-16.
The embattled Jayhawks started from their 9 following a penalty on the kickoff runback.
On fourth0and02 at the 28, with five minutes left, Kansas tried a run for the first down - and got nothing. FSU got a shot from there.
Kirk Coker, on a quarterback keeper, rolled to the 12. A face-mask penalty put the Seminoles on the 7. But a fumble on the following play was claimed by Jayhawk Jeff Anderson at the 9.
Kansas moved to midfield. With a bit over two minutes left, Billy Allen intercepted a pass at the FSU 29. Coker stuck to the ground. With 34 seconds left, Berry punted to the Kansas 17.
The game's last play saw Martin Mayhew, the former Florida High star, wheel 19 yards into Kansas territory following an interception.
Then Florida State started celebrating another 2-0 beginning under Bowden.

Stack, Sack & Sly.
Savage and clever, FSU rips Miami 38-3.
MIAMI, FL - Jimmy Johnson on Friday declared his University of Miami team had enjoyed its best practice week of the year, and that he would be shocked if it did not play its best game of the year.
Johnson was shocked, and the whole of the college football world along with him as Florida State took the defending national champions apart 38-3 here Saturday afternoon.
All the king's men could not begin to put those champions together again. At least not for a while.
The rain came early, cutting a sellout crowd in the Orange Bowl from more than 75,000 to 62,210 as many with tickets stayed home and watched on television.
That rain left just before the kickoff, but no manner of weather would have affected the outcome of this one. Florida State was better prepared for this football game, perhaps, than any in a very long while.
"If they shut down our offense, they got one heck of a defense," FSU Coach Bobby Bowden had said quietly on Saturday morning.
Miami shut down nothing. The Seminoles did the shutting down.
Running for 284 yards, employing the reverse maybe as effectively as any major team of recent times, Florida State rolled up 478 yards, Miami got just 247, only 10 of it running.
And the Seminoles - playing absolutely magnificent defense - sacked Bernie Kosar six times, sending him to the bench long before it was over. Additionally, his replacement, Vinnie Testaverde, was sacked twice.
Kosar completed 11 of 19 passes for 154 yards, but few were damaging. His ace receiver, Eddie Brown, never caught one. Testaverde hit seven of his 15 throws after coming on late in the third quarter with Florida State leading 24-0.
It was 9-0 at halftime.
Florida State scored the first two times it got the football in each half.
Derek Schmidt, the freshman kicker, gave the Seminoles an enormous early lift with a school-record field goal of 54 yards. Later he kicked ones of 40 and 38 yards.
Eric Thomas executed well a Florida State game plan that called for Greg Allen to be a decoy. The tailback ran just 10 times for 65 yards. Meanwhile, Thomas crossed Miami up with reverses and with passes - nine completions of 15 for 151 yards.
Jessie Hester pulled in five passes for 116 yards and got 102 additional yards on reverse runs.
The Seminoles, who come home to play surprising Temple next Saturday night, now are 3-0 and apparently a team with which the nation must reckon.
Once again, the Seminoles played a game free of major errors - no fumbles lost, no passes intercepted.
FSU's offense was simply devastating, averaging 8.1 yards per play. Many would say the Seminole defense was in the same league as Miami, now 4-2, averaged just 3.7.
For Miami, coming home after four straight games on the road, it was only the third Orange Bowl loss in more than five seasons. Bobby Bowden teams have administered two of those setbacks in that span, the last one 24-7 in '83.
On the game's first scrimmage play, Alonzo Highsmith seemed to fumble on a run, and Florida State appeared to recover but officials ruled the ball dead when it got away from the back.
Two Kosar passes, for 8 and 19 yards to Stanley Shakespeare, overcame a holding penalty and lifted Miami to its 42. Then the quarterback was frustrated - two misses plus a Billy Allen sack that cost him 10 yards. The first punt of the game left Florida State at its 33.
Faking to Greg Allen, Eric Thomas threw a bootleg to Jessie Hester 25 yards to the Miami 42. Two runs got just three, however, and Thomas failed with a throw.
With the wind going for him, freshman Derek Schmidt came on - the ball at the 38 - and kicked a 54-yard field goal that put the Seminoles up 3-0.
It was a school record, topping the 53-yarder Grant Guthrie kicked against Miami in '69.
A draw play saw Warren Williams dash 24 yards for Miami to its 46. Under heavy pressure from Garth Jax, Kosar ran wide and got sacked by linebacker Fred Jones at the 34. Two plays later Miami punted to the FSU 18.
Up the middle came Cletis Jones, getting 15 to the 33. Three more plays, including a short pass to herb Gainer, reached the 44.
On a reverse, Jessie Hester scampered for 25 to the Miami 31. Three runs later Florida State was short, at the 23.
Fourth down, and back came Schmidt to boot a 40-yard field goal, making it 6-0.
A pass to Shakespeare got 10, but three plays later Miami was back at its 20 following a sack of Kosar for a loss of 11. Offsides on a first punt cost FSU 5, but the Seminoles got the ball back at their 44 after the second.
On the final play of the quarter Thomas got sacked as he faked and dropped back. That set the Seminoles back on their 39.
It came to third down at the 39, with Thomas faking brightly, then running the other way, finally throwing to Hester for 19 yards and a first down at the Miami 42.
After a holding penalty, it came to third down at the Miami 39. Under pressure, Thomas missed with a pass. The punt of Louis Berry trickled into the end zone when it might have been downed on the one.
From the 20, Kosar's third-down pass to Williams attained the 35. But two runs got little, and when Kosar tried to throw again Stanley Scott swept in to sack him for a loss of 13 at the 27. Rick Tuten's fine punt placed FSU at its 21.
On the reverse, Hassan Jones suddenly pulled up and threw long - 43 yards to Hester at the Miami 36.
On third down at the 27 came a fake to Allen up the middle as Thomas threw toward a streaking Hester in the end zone. Hester could not hang on to the throw. It mattered not. Florida State was judged to have an illegal receiver downfield on the play. The penalty meant a loss of down. Taking a deliberate 5-yard delay penalty to give Berry more punting room on fourth down, the Seminoles got the effort they wanted - a boot to the 9.
Runs by Darryl Oliver vaulted Miami to its 30. But when Highsmith swung wide, Len Chavers stripped him of the ball, and linebacker Henry Taylor claimed it for the Seminoles at the 34.
On a pitchout, Allen ripped for 12 to the 22. But it came to fourth down at the 21 after Thomas got sacked.
Kicking into the wind now, Schmidt hit the field goal from 38 yards out, and it was 9-0.
From the 26 after the kickoff Oliver moved wide for 11 to the 37. Two plays later a pass over the middle to Oliver picked up 31 to FSU's 25.
On third down, a pass to Shakespeare got a first down at the 10. But Billy Allen decked Oliver for a loss of two on a run with 1:52 remaining and officials calling timeout because of a stadium clock that was not working properly.
Highsmith got only a yard or so. Then when Kosar threw, Eric Williams made a diving interception for the Seminoles at the 5.
Killing the clock, Florida State ran three times. Berry's punt and a clipping call against Miami left Miami with time for one play from the 50.
Kosar faded to pass - and was sacked for the fifth time in the half. Isaac Williams did the honors here.
At halftime, Florida State had 178 yards, with 107 passing, and Miami 121. Kosar showed just 99 air yards on seven completions in 13 attempts. The reverse had accounted for a significant part of FSU's yardage, with Hester getting 25 on a run off it and 43 on a pass from it.
With Miami's last-half kickoff going out of the end zone on the fly, Florida State, under a new rule, got a start at its 30.
Allen got nothing, and Thomas lost 7.
Abruptly, Hester took a pitch from Thomas on a reverse, cut upfield and raced 77 yards to a touchdown. Going for two, Thomas got them with a pass to Hassan Jones, and it was 17-0.
Shakespeare pulled in a 14-yard pass at his 35. Kosar got no further on that drive. A Tuten punt backed the Seminoles to their 18.
Tight end Pete Panton snared a 22-yard pass at the 41. Swinging wide, Allen got loose on a 39-yard ramble to the Miami 21.
Jones pounded for 5. Thomas kept for 10, to the 7, then got 3 more to the 4. On a pitchout, Rosie Snipes took a dive off the left side for the touchdown. Miami was offside as Florida State got a bad snap on a conversion attempt that sent holder Kirk Coker in a futile scramble. Then Schmidt kicked the point and it was 24-0 with 9:08 left in the quarter.
On the second play of the final period, Greg Cox kicked a 36-yard field goal to cut the score to 24-3.
Editors note: FSU scored two additional times in the fourth quarter: a 25-yard pass from Thomas to Hassan Jones and a 3-yard run by Rosie Snipes to make the final score 38-3.

Fast start.
Two quick scores enable FSU to trample Temple.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Again displaying enormous versatility, Florida State hacked out a 44-27 victory here Saturday night over tough Temple.
And that provided the Seminoles with their first 4-0 start for a season since 1979 when they went 11-0.
Florida State, playing before 56,892 on a hot and humid evening, did it with a little bit of everything.
Joe Wessel, the surprising backup defensive back, took considerable early starch out of the Owls when he blocked two kicks - leading to a 14-0 lead.
Greg Allen, with another running night of more than 100 yards, got the first on a 43-yard draw play. Eric Riley scored the second when he picked up the field goal Wessel had blocked and romped across the goal line.
Moving from its 23 after the opening kickoff, Temple got to the 38 on a 10-yard pass from quarterback Lee Saltz to Greg Pronko. Three more plays gained not a yard, and a punt placed FSU at its 29.
Two Greg Allen runs got just 2, and a delay penalty cost the Seminoles 5. When a pass failed, Louis Berry punted 37 yards to the Temple 38.
A 17-yard pass to Willie Marshall reached FSU's 46. On a run, Paul Palmer fumbled but recovered for a 16-yard gain to FSU's 30. But holding cost the Owls 10. Soon, linebacker Fred Jones sacked Saltz.
A punt seemed to place FSU in a hole at its three, but an illegal-procedure call cancelled the big boot. And when Kip Shenefelt punted again, Joe Wessel ripped through to block it at the Temple 44. It was Wessel's third blocked punt of the season.
An Eric Thomas keeper for 12 led to a first down at the 24. Next play Thomas was sacked for minus-8. Hassan Jones scrambled to the 10 on a pass but holding nullified that move. Back at the 42 now, Allen lost a yard.
Then came Allen again, on a draw play, cutting right after about 15 yards, picking up a block and going 43 yards for a touchdown. Derek Schmidt's point made it a sudden 7-0.
The Owls got close to the 50, following a good kickoff return to the 34 and solid running by Brian Slade. But tackle Gerald Nichols sacked Saltz at the 39, and a punt soon followed, to FSU's 22.
Allen's runs reached the 40, but that was it.
After a Berry punt, Temple struck from its 26. In at quarterback on the series, James Thompson, the former Leon High star, soon lofted a 43-yard strike to Willie Marshall at the FSU 31.
Three more plays, however, netted only a yard. When Jim Cooper tried a field goal, from 46 yards out, Wessel shot through again to block the football. It rolled toward the Temple goal. On the run, cornerback Eric Riley picked it up at the Owl 34 and ran it in for a touchdown. Schmidt's point-after brought it to 14-0 early in the second quarter.
When it reached fourth down for Temple at its 24, it punted - but FSU was offsides, and a penalty left the visitors about a foot short of a first down. Temple gambled with a Slade run, and the 225-pounder got it at the 31.
A bit later the Owls punted again, from their 39. It was a good effort that Darrin Holloman fielded at the 7. Apparently hemmed up, he somehow maintained his balance for 29 yards before finally falling.
Slashing to his right, Allen knocked off 25 yards to the Temple 36. Promptly, Thomas found a streaking Jessie Hester open over the middle at the 10, and it was easy cruising into the end zone on a 39-yard scoring pass. Schmidt swung his leg for 21-0.
Temple's offense could generate nothing. A penalty pushed the Owls from their 20 to the 10. A third-down punt for 52 yards gave Florida State a shot from its 39.
But it was opportunity time for the Owls when Allen fumbled, Doug Davis recovering for the visitors at FSU's 41.
Slade slipped loose for 15, on third down, to FSU's 20. The next play saw Shelley Poole, a 220-pound sophomore from Norcross, Ga., slam to the 1. Slade crossed from there. When Cooper missed the point kick, the score remained 21-6.
From the goal line, Holloman dashed to the 46 on the kickoff return.
A penalty rubbed out a Cletis Jones run for 9. On second down, however, Hassan Jones snared a 27-yard Thomas pass at the Temple 29. Following another holding call, it came to third down at the 29. On a pitchout, Allen rambled to the 14. That gave him 103 yards for the evening on 11 runs.
Third down at the 10, and Hassan Jones grabbed a Thomas pass in the end zone for the touchdown. William Wright, the defender, seemed to latch onto the ball at about the same time. Ties in such circumstances go to the offense. Schmidt's boot brought the score to 28-6 with 47 seconds left in the half.
At this midway point, Florida State did not show a whole lot more offense than Temple - just 212 yards to 155. But the four of nine passes that Thomas had hit for a mere 75 yards had been devastating, with two going for touchdowns.
Bigger, of course, were the pair of blocked kicks from Wessel. On 19 of 28 plays from scrimmage, the Seminoles had run, for 137 yards.
Early in the last half, the Seminoles could not move and Berry's 49-yard punt was returned 12 to the Temple 37. On a keeper, Saltz skipped for 22 to FSU's 41.
Isaac Williams blunted that charge with a 5-yard sack of Saltz. A hot punt left Florida State in trouble, however, at its 2.
Hitting the middle twice, Cletis Jones got the first down at the 12. Temple's aggressive defense called a halt there.
This time Berry punted 56 yards, and again Temple got a start at its 37 after a short runback.
Slade could not handle a first-down pitchout, and nose guard Todd Stroud claimed the ball for FSU at Temple's 33.
Once more Temple granted nothing worth mentioning. Thomas lost 3, Allen got just 4 and a pass missed.
But in came Schmidt, who has not missed. The freshman put a 49-yard field goal through, raising the score to 31-6.
Florida State got into difficulty just a little later when the Owls punted from their 34.
Holloman fumbled at FSU's 35, and a Temple man fell on it. Immediately, Palmer threw a halfback pass to a wide-open Russell Carter at the 2 for the score. A running try for two points was stopped by Eric Riley, leaving it 31-12.
A 20-yard pass on third down to Hassan Jones got FSU to Temple's 45. Two plays later Herb Gainer collared another 20-yarder, at the 27. Holloman, in at tailback for Allen, led with his running to a first down at the 15 as the quarter ran out.
Third down at the 11, and Thomas threw to Hester for a touchdown. A pass try for two failed, leaving it 37-12.
A 15-yard pass to Marshall gained Temple its 37. Whereupon, freshman Eric Williams intercepted a following throw by Saltz at FSU's 23.
Editor's Note: Temple scored a touchdown on a 7-yard run and after the kick the score was 37-19.
A futile onside kick provided the Seminoles with a chance from their 49. Three runs took it to the Owls 34. Hassan Jones grabbed a third-down toss for 19 at the 14. Allen slashed to the 2, and a late-hit penalty put the ball on the 1. Holloman scored on a pitchout.
With 5:20 remaining, Martin Mayhew's interception of a Thompson bomb gave FSU the ball at its 32. Kirk Coker entered at quarterback. Three runs, and Berry's punt left Temple at its 29 after a penalty was assessed against FSU on the play.
A Thompson pass for 15, followed by another personal foul on FSU, got Temple to the Seminole 36. With 31 seconds to go, Thompson hit Palmer with a 20-yard scoring pass. On a keeper, Thompson got two on a run, making it 44-27.
And Florida State was at the visitors' 30 when it ended.

All tied up.
Late field goal salvages 17-17 tie for FSU.
MEMPHIS, TN – On the game’s last play, Derek Schmidt kicked a 42-yard field goal that brought Florida State from behind to a 17-17 tie with Memphis State that it was lucky to get Saturday night.
And perhaps to settle with, under the circumstances.
It was the first tie of Bobby Bowden’s long and successful coaching career. It was a most timely one.
From start to finish, little went right for the Seminoles on this rainy night as they ran into a fired-up bunch of Tigers.
In the beginning, with a light rain falling, Florida State went on defense – after winning the coin toss and choosing to kick off.
Immediately, Florida State found big trouble as Jerry Harris raced 74 yards with the kickoff to the FSU 26 before Billy Allen got him.
Offsides against FSU, coupled with two runs for 11 yards by Russ Clayton, gained the 10. But a defense led by linebacker Fred Jones allowed Memphis to penetrate no further than the 5. On fourth down, Don Glossom booted a 22-yard field goal for 3-0.
A high bouncing kickoff was too hot for the Seminoles to handle, and they ended with poor field position at their eight. Two runs and a futile pass netted just 2 yards. Louis Berry punted 50 yards and the Tigers started at the 50 following a 10-yard return. A third down pass from the Tiger 49 found Punkin Williams for the first down at the 37. Clayton popped for 7 and Jeff Womack for 10 on a draw, to the 20.
Quarterback Denny Sparkman’s keepers led on to the 10. Second down there, and he threw to Enis Jackson in the end zone for the touchdown. A point kick by Glossom and the Seminoles trailed 10-0.
From the 20, Eric Thomas found Hassan Jones with a pass at the 34. Three runs left FSU two feet short at the 43. A fourth-down gamble saw Cletis Jones burst through for 5 and the first down. Third down at the 50, needing eight, and Greg Allen rambled on the draw to the Tiger 40. Two carries by Cletis Jones reached the 28.
With the aid of two offside penalties against the home team, Florida State moved to a first down at the 14 as the second quarter started. Two plays later, Allen scored on an option play covering 10 yards as Thomas pitched out at the last moment. Derek Schmidt’s point cut it to 10-7.
From its 20, Memphis lost yardage on an offensive-interference penalty and Henry Taylor’s sack of Sparkman for minus-5 at the 12.
A punt out of that hole gave Florida State a shot from the Tiger 44. But nothing came of it. Three plays later FSU replied with a Berry punt that rolled into the end zone.
Second down at the 20, and Jerome McCoy intercepted Sparkman’s pass, giving FSU a nifty chance from the Memphis 28.
Allen, on a sweep, was out of bounds at the 10. Two plays later a poor pitchout lost three, to the 11. Rolling out, Thomas hit Hassan Jones with a pass in the back of the end zone for the touchdown. Schmidt’s kick put FSU up 14-10.
On the first scrimmage play following the kickoff, Sparkman threw long over the middle to a streaking Harris. When defender Eric Riley mistimed his jump at about the FSU 45, the receiver had an easy catch – and clear sailing – for a touchdown on a 79-yard play. A Gossom point kick had Memphis back in front 17-14.
A brisk wind appeared to assist that pass in its long flight.
Three runs from the 20 left FSU at its 29, and Berry booted a 53-yarder dead at the Memphis 18. Memphis moved not at all from there as Stanley Scott got through to sack Sparkman for a loss of 3. A Tiger punt gave FSU the ball again, at its 47.
On three straight carries, Tony Smith got 8. 5 and 13 to the 27.
It came to fourth down just short of the 17. Going for it, Thomas seemed never to get control of the snap, and the fumble was claimed at the 17 by the Tigers’ David Boothe with 54 seconds left in the half.
After a first-down pass was deflected, the Tiger were content to run out the clock and take a 17-14 lead into the dressing room.
From its 24, following the second-half kickoff, Florida State came running. Two Allen runs got 15 in a push up to the 46. Third down, needing 8, and Thomas pitched out to Allen for 11 to the Memphis 42.
There the Seminoles stalled. Among other things, Jessie Hester found Tigers’ Tim Harris waiting and ready as he swept on a reverse. The play lost eight. And Berry punted again.
A 20-yard run by Punkin Williams lifted Memphis to its 42. FSU defenders tightened, forcing a punt that Darrin Holloman fielded at the 15.
On a delay run, Allen skipped for 22 to the 37. But on third down at the 42 Thomas tripped and fell for a loss of seven as he tried to pass.
Again Florida State defenders limited the Tigers to three downs following a punt. And when Wally Hatfield punted, his short, 22-yarder gave FSU the ball at its 45.
Allen ran for 11. But two following runs resulted in a net loss of 1 yard. Then Thomas overthrew Hester in the end zone.
Another Berry punt, and Sparkman’s 18-yard pass to Punkin Williams had Memphis at its 41 as the quarter ended.
A 22-yard throw to Jackson vaulted the home team to FSU’s 37. But on third down Taylor sacked Sparkman at his 45, bringing another punt.
This one was a beaut, leaving the Seminoles at their 1.
Cletis Jones ran twice, to the four. On a pitchout, Allen got the first down at the 12.
But there was no third-down magic at the 17 as Thomas stumbled again on the wet field, eluded a charge, then threw incomplete.
An 8-yard return of a Berry punt set up Memphis at its 46.
Running right, Williams knocked off 10. On the same play, he dashed 23 to the FSU 19 on the following play.
Womack’s running brought a first down at the seven.
Editor’s Note: Eric Williams intercepted a pass in the end zone. FSU eventually punted to Memphis State.
A punt left Florida State at its 31 with 2:26 to play.
But on second down Thomas lost 13, back to the 21. On a surprise draw call, Allen gained little.
On a fourth-and-15 pass, interference was called as cornerback Donnie Elder nailed Hester before the ball’s arrival. That provided a first down at the FSU 42 with 1:10 remaining.
A third-down pass to Hester reached the Memphis 40.
With 39 seconds to go an interference call on Trell Hooper brought Florida State a first down at the 25. He was impeding Hassan Jones at the goal line.
Holding knocked FSU back to the 35 as Thomas threw out of the end zone.
A short pass to Hester got FSU to the 25.
On the last play of the game Schmidt kicked a 42-yard field goal.

Lost in the wild one.
Time runs out on FSU’s unbeaten record.
TALLAHASSEE, FL – As a record crowd of 58,671 literally shook Campbell Stadium, Auburn rallied for a touchdown with 48 seconds left and took an unbelievable 42-41 football victory from Floida State here Saturday night.
Brent Fullwood got the TD from 3 yards out. A 35-yard Pat Washington pass to freshman Freddie Weygand set the stage. And a fourth-and-four run for 6 by Washington at his own 30 made all that possible,
Seldom has a Florida State football team played so poorly and played so well.
In the end, its own mistakes were much its undoing.
Apparently, Florida State made a big mistake in this one before the start.
Auburn won the coin toss and declined the option. With the option, FSU chose to kick off. That meant Auburn could also receive the last-half kickoff, if it chose.
On the first play from scrimmage, at the Auburn 29, Pat Washington rolled on a run to his 45. And on the second play Washington threw 51 yards to Freddie Weygand at the FSU 4, as the ball got deflected in flight by cornerback Eric Riley.
Two runs gained the 1. A surprise pass missed. On fourth down, Brent Fullwood dove over the right side for an easy touchdown. Robert McGinty booted the point for 7-0.
Eric Thomas hit his first two passes – short ones – to Hassan Jones and Darrin Holloman, spurring the Seminoles from a start at their 21, to the 38. Another Thomas toss – to Jones fro 11 – soon gained the Auburn 47.
After Greg Allen tore loose on a pitchout for a pickup of 17 to the 30, the Seminoles were stopped at the 23. On fourth down, Derek Schmidt kicked a 40-yard field goal, narrowing the score to 7-3.
FSU was kicking off short, trying to keep the ball away from the dangerous Fleetwood, and Auburn got good position at its 37 following a 10-yard runback.
Two runs gained the 49, but when Washington turned to the pass he missed with a pair. A Lewis Colbert punt left FSU at its 12. Cletis Jones popped up the middle for 9. Thomas kept for the first down, with a penalty aiding the Seminoles to the 30. Three plays later Thomas kept for 10 yards, to the 45.
Third down at the Auburn 47, and Auburn defenders charged the middle in anticipation of what came – an Allen run. Slammed hard by that assault, Allen fumbled, and Jim Bone claimed the rolling ball for Auburn at FSU’s 40.
Two runs got stopped, but a personal-foul assessment moved the Tigers to the 23. Collis Campbell promptly ripped to the 15. Whereupon, defenders Isaac Williams and Garth Jax teamed to sock Campbell for a short loss on the next play. On the next play Washington fumbled and fell on the ball at the 19.
Fourth down, and McGinty booted a 36-yard field goal for 10-3.
Rosie Snipes’ 16-yard run lifted FSU to its 42. Hassan Jones nabbed a pass for 10 at the Tiger 39. Three runs squeezed out a first down at the 29.
But on the first two plays of the second quarter, Thomas was sacked in succession for losses of 5 and 10 yards, the latter time by linebacker Gregg Carr. That left the Seminoles at the 40 and Louis Berry’s punt was out of bounds at the 6.
Fullwood led to a first down at the 19, but the Tigers got no further than the 23 with three more runs.
When Colbert punted, Lenny Chavers slashed through and blocked it. The ball rolled out of bounds at the 3.
Illegal procedure cost FSU 5. Cletis Jones pounded the middle for 1, to the 7.
Next play Thomas hit Pete Panton with a low pass over the middle as the tight end slipped into the end zone. Schmidt’s point following the TD tied it 10-10.
A kickoff return to the 31 – and then sudden lightning! On a pitchout, Collis Campbell sailed toward the sidelines, broke free as he got loose from tacklers and went 69 yards for a touchdown. But McGinty missed the point kick, and Auburn led 16-10.
Things worsened from that point.
On the kickoff, Hassan Jones suddenly stopped on his runback and threw across the field to Jessie Hester, who raced down the sidelines to Auburn’s 45 – but Jones was flagged for passing forward on the play designed for a lateral. In the pressbox, it appeared that he had in fact thrown forward.
Now backed to the 4, FSU could not get out of the trap. Eventually, Berry punted – the ball at the 3. A 7-yard Trey Gainous return gave Auburn a shot from the Seminole 39.
A pass to Weygand gained the 25. On third down at the 30, Gainous – from nearby Cairo – came up with a superb catch of Washington’s throw at the 10. On the play, the ball was shifted to the 5 after Florida State drew a penalty for too many men on the field.
On a pitchout, Fullwood scored easily. Trying for two points, Washington missed on a pass, leaving it 22-10.
More poor field position as Snipes got just to the 17 on a kickoff return. Hester caught a 10-yarder at the 27.
Then, on a fake option, Thomas threw deep to the streaking Hester, who cuddled the bomb and scored on a 73-yard play. Schmidt’s point narrowed it to 22-17 with 5:03 left in the half.
Florida State’s aroused defenders checked the Tigers at their 20, bringing a punt that gave FSU the ball at its 40 with 2:21 to go.
Hester’s 16-yard catch attained the Auburn 41. On the reverse, Holloman sped to the 25.
The Seminoles stalled. A pass interference call on the offense moved the ball back to the 40. On fourth down with 23 seconds in the half, Schmidt tried a 57-yard field goal.
Gerald Robinson, the hot defensive end, blocked it. Auburn was at FSU’s 42, and had time for a last futile pass before the horn blew.
At this point, yardage was strikingly even, FSU leading 242 to 240. But the Tigers had chocked off FSU’s tough running, and 156 of the FSU total came on nine completions of 13 Thomas passes. Auburn, meanwhile, had run for 142 of its sum.
Hester had 99 yards on three receptions, but Allen only 21 on six runs.
There was more thunder on the last-half kickoff. Fullwood ripped out of the end zone to the 30 – and fumbled. The ball rolled forward. Ed Graham picked it up at about the Auburn 40 and danced 60 yards to a touchdown on the odd, 100-yard play. McGinty added a point for a quick 29-17.
From the FSU 31, Panton got 11 on a pass. Allen ran for 5, Thomas 9 to the Auburn 41. Allen slashed for 19 to the 22. More runs got a first down at the 10.
On a reverse, Holloman – behind a big Thomas block – scored on a 10-yard scamper. Schmidt’s point cut the score again, to 29-24.
From its 20, Auburn’s offense got not a yard on three downs after the kickoff. A punt placed the Seminoles at their 41.
Pat Carter pulled in an 18-yard pass at the Tiger 41. Three straight Tony Smith runs reached the 23. But a faulty exchange from center on third down found Thomas falling on a fumble for a yard loss.
On fourth down Schmidt was wide left with a field goal try from 40 yards out.
Again the defense allowed Auburn nothing, forcing a punt. This time FSU got the ball at its 38.
Second down at the 42, and Thomas, evading a hard rush, threw long to Hester, who pulled the ball in before falling at the 13 on the 45-yard play.
Promptly, Hassan Jones caught a 13-yard pass in a corner of the end zone for the touchdown. Going for two, Thomas got it on a pass to Hester, and FSU led 32-29.
Auburn maneuvered from its 20 to the 30. On a first-down bomb, Washington hit Weygand with a 61-yarder at FSU’s 19.
A run got 3. On a rollout, Washington appeared to score – but a flag had fallen. It was for clipping.
But as a raging Pat Dye threw his cap at the feet of an official, another flag fell. Auburn was penalized 15 for that unsportsmanlike conduct.
After all that, Auburn found itself abruptly back on its own 41.
And two futile plays later it punted to the 18.
Snipes came stepping for 12. Hassan Jones caught a 20-yard throw at Auburn’s 44.
It came to fourth down at the 37, with FSU going for it. Suddenly, FSU shifted into shotgun formation – and Auburn was pulled offside by the surprise move. That slick play got the first down at the 32.
Three plays later, third down at the 29, Thomas kept for 9 to the 20. Smith whipped to the 14 as the quarter ended.
Third down at the 12, and Thomas was sacked at the 17. Schmidt entered, kicked a 34-yard field goal for 35-29.
On a pitchout, Kyle Collins got 17 to Auburn’s 40. Two plays later, Washington, on a keeper, slipped away for 23 to FSU’s 33. Jesse got seven, and Campbell 12 to the 15. Taking a third-down pitchout, Collins swept wide for the touchdown from the 10. McGinty’s point gave Auburn a 36-35 lead with the clock showing 10:47 to go.
Snipe dashed for 15, to the 39. Hassan Jones snared a pass at Auburn’s 44. Third down at the 39, ans Snipes took a handoff and sliced off tackle, 23 to the 16.
From the 15, Thomas again passed to Hassan Jones in the end zone for a TD. A 2-point try failed as Thomas got sacked trying to pitch to Snipes, leaving it 41-36.
The clock showed 7:44.
Auburn struggled to its 37, where passes failed. A punt gave FSU possession at its 24 with 5:56 remaining.
Snipes got just 2. Herb Gainer slipped and fell as Thomas threw – incomplete.
As Snipes ran to the 37, holding was called and FSU set back on its 17.
But on third down, Snipes took off on the run, got 19 and the first down at the 35. It came to fourth and one, 3:28 to go as FSU called timeout.
Making as though to go for it, the Seminoles tried the shotgun shift again – but Auburn was not fooled. FSU stalled until it drew the planned delay penalty when that failed, and Berry punted to the 24.
It came to fourth ad four at the 30. Keeping, rolling, Washington got the first down at his 36.
On third down he found the irrepressible Weygand with the big one – a pass that gained 22 to FSU’s 22. Four plays later Fullwood scored from the 3, rambling wide. A pass for two failed, leaving it 42-41 with 48 seconds.
A start at the FSU 37 was in vain. In rapid succession, Robinson sacked Thomas for 12 and 15 yards.
And a last-play pass to Gainer around the Auburn 40 was too little, too late.

Wave crashes.
Two blocks too much for Tulane as FSU wins 27-6.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - It was as though Florida State defensive forces got angry, and decided to bring an abrupt halt to the foolishness.
Tied 6-6 at halftime and impaled upon their own mistakes, the Seminoles blocked back-to-back punts for touchdowns that quelled Tulane 27-6 here Saturday night.
Len Chavers blocked the first punt and Joe Wessel picked it up at the 10 to score.
Jesse Solomon blocked the next one, then fell on the ball in the end zone for a TD that gave FSU a 20-6 lead.
Still it was tense - until Stanley Scott claimed a Tulane fumble at FSU's 2 with 7:24 to go.
And Quarterback Eric Thomas experienced his first interception following 130 throws without one this season - a ball that bounced off teammate Pat Carter.
In the beginning, Tulane wasted no time putting the ball up. On the game's first two scrimmage plays, from the Tulane 20, Ken Karcher hit Larry Routs and Mark Savini with passes of 21 and 9 yards to the 50.
On the draw, 232-pound fullback Joe Caravello pounded to the FSU 42. But on the following play, a faulty exchange from center brought a fumble that Henry Taylor claimed for the Seminoles at the 44.
Greg Allen, on a draw, soon got 16 to Tulane's 36. A short Eric Thomas pass and keeper got another first down, at the 26. Allen popped, on a run, to the 14.
After Allen was stopped on a following run, Thomas moved wide and threw to a wide-open Hassan Jones for what seemed a touchdown - but the quarterback had gone out of bounds just before the throw, officials ruled.
Fourth down at the 15, and Derek Schmidt kicked a 32-yard field goal for 3-0.
A 26-yard pass, Karcher to Savini, lifted the visitors to their 46. On third down Craig Harrison caught an 18-yarder at FSU's 34.
Three runs led on to the 15. But Isaac Williams caught Lester Lavalais for a loss of 3 on third down.
As Tony Wood missed a 34-yard field goal, a delay flag had fallen. That provided another chance, and Wood made good on a 40-yard shot, tying it 3-3.
Rosie Snipes gathered the kickoff at the goal line, and scooted 52 yards on the return to Tulane's 48. Soon after, Snipes got 11 and Thomas 13 in a movement to the 17.
Three plays later the Seminoles were back at the 24. Cedric Jones had gotten three, Thomas nothing. Then Jones had lost 10 on a screen pass.
Whereupon, Schmidt kicked a 41-yard field goal, making it 6-3.
As the second quarter opened, Florida State defenders hemmed up Tulane inside its 30 following three futile plays that included a sack of Karcher by Gerald Nichols and Stanley Scott.
A punt traveled to midfield - but a Florida State offside provided another opportunity. On this punt, a clipping flag fell as Darrin Holloman returned to midfield, and the Seminoles found themselves in a hole at their 14 after the yardage was walked off.
Allen broke runs of 6 and 12, leading to the 35. Hassan Jones snared a pass at the FSU 49. Following a procedure penalty, Thomas kept for 11 to the Tulane 45.
Pass interference by Tulane on Jessie Hester at the goal line got the Seminoles to the 30.
Two short runs and a pass that failed left FSU with a fourth down at the 24. Schmidt's 42-yard bid for a field goal was wide left.
Caravello got 7, and Jones 10 - to the 41. Route pulled in a 19-yard pass at FSU's 42, and Caravello sprung on the next play for 15 to the 27.
The drive stalled at the 25. On fourth down, Wood tied it 6-6 with a 42-yard field goal.
From the 23 after the kickoff, Florida State struggled to its 35 on the running of Rosie Snipes.
A Thomas run for 7 left the Seminoles a foot short on fourth down. Going for it, the Seminoles got it by a couple of inches on a Thomas keeper. Third down, needing 8, and Herb Gainer caught a 10-yard pass at the Tulane 42. Two plays later, Snipes sailed for 20 on a pitchout but a penalty moved the sticks back to the 33. On the next play Snipes took a pitchout the other way and got 20 to the 13.
Following timeouts by each side, Snipes picked up 4. A pass failed. Thomas was short at the 7 on a run.
Ignoring a field-goal attempt, Florida State went for the 2 yards. Trying to throw, Thomas was pressured by strong safety Treg Songy - who forced a fumble that Tulane covered.
Time for a single play before time ran out in an odd first half that had seen Florida State punt not once, but put only 6 points on the board.
At this point, Florida State barely led in yardage, 195 to 156. But 170 of the Seminoles' yards came on the ground, with Snipes getting 64 in nine.
From their 32, the Seminoles moved little after Allen's opening burst of 6 yards. After Cedric Jones was stopped and a pass missed, Louis Berry boomed his first punt - a 44-yarder that left Tulane at its 24.
Three downs, including a pass for 8, had Tulane at the 33.
When Sammy Amarena punted, nose guard Len Chavers slammed through to block the ball. Safety Joe Wessel picked it up at the 10 and scooted on in for the touchdown. Schmidt added a point and FSU led 13-6.
From its 22, Tulane got discouraged when Garth Jax struck Caravello for a loss of 3 on first down. Karcher could not connect on two passes.
When Amarena punted again, here came linebacker Jesse Solomon - blocking the ball, then falling on it in the end zone for the touchdown. Another Schmidt conversion and FSU was ahead 20-6.
The running of Jones spurred the Green Wave to its 35. Then Karcher was sacked by Nichols for 10. On the next play, pressured by Nichols, the quarterback was sacked by Darryl Gray for 10 more back to the 15.
But when Amarena punted, it was a high beaut that Darrin Holloman fumbled. Eliapo Sala recovered for the visitors at the Seminole 40.
Runs by Caravello and Jones gained the 27. But again Karcher could not hit his passes. On fourth down, Wood missed a 42-yard field-goal kick.
Snipes ran for 10, then Cletis Jones for 19 to the Tulane 47. Two plays later, clipping set FSU back to its 42. Thomas scrambled for 10 but Snipes was stopped cold.
Berry punted to the 16, and the Seminoles were penalized 5 for interference with the catch.
But shortly, Brian McCrary intercepted a Karcher bomb at FSU's 28.
On the reverse, Holloman sprinted to the 40.
Two plays later Allen was chased down trying to find running room, and lost 20 - back to the 25. On the opening play of the last quarter, Berry punted to the 26.
As David McLaughlin moved in at quarterback, Tulane turned to the run. Lavalais and Jones quickly had Tulane at its 44 following three snaps. That was it as linebacker Paul McGowan led a defensive stand.
A 43-yard punt placed Florida State in trouble at its 11.
Third down at the 19, and a Thomas pass bounced from Carter's hands and into those of Benny Burst for an interception that gave Tulane a shot at its 35.
McLaughlin's third-down pass to Route for 9 gained the 19. Two Caravello slams and one by Jones reached the 8. Pass-interference against Martin Mayhew on a ball that seemed uncatchable provided a first down at the 2.
But Jones fumbled when he hit the middle of the line, Stanley Scott recovering for FSU at that 2.
Allen carried four straight times - for 4, 5, 8 and 16, up to the 35.
There the Seminoles bogged down, as Thomas got racked on second down for a loss of 5. Eventually, Berry punted - backing Tulane to its 18 with 5:08 remaining.
Route caught a 13-yarder at the 31. A following completion for 7 and run by Caravello had the Green Wave at its 47.
Joe Wessel's third-down interception of a McLaughlin shot was nullified by holding again FSU, and Tulane vaulted to the Seminole 42.
After Gray sacked McLaughlin for 14, Tulane got just 6 yards on a fake-punt run b y Burnell Dent and yielded the ball to Florida State on that fourth-down play at its 42.
Promptly, Allen took a pitchout, cut wide behind good blocking, and scored on a romp down the sidelines. Schmidt added a point that made it 27-6 with 1:34 to go.
McLaughlin moved Tulane to FSU's 46 on two passes before Gray again sacked him.
A fourth-down throw to Savini for 18 gained the 25, and holding put the ball on the 15 with 14 seconds left. And there it ended.

FSU survives 52-44 shootout.
TEMPE, AZ - Behind 17-0 before 68,754 fans got comfortable in their seats, Florida State rallied behind a superb kicking game and the stunning quarterback work of Kirk Coker to triumph 52-44 here Saturday night in an amazing football game.
With starter Eric Thomas nursing a hip-pointer, Coker came in with the Seminoles trailing 20-10 shortly before halftime. In his first four series, Coker led the team to four touchdowns as he completed eight of his first 10 passes for 203 yards.
Tailback Greg Allen had one of his great nights, scoring on an 81-yard run and gaining 223 yards in 23 carries.
Allen scored on a pitchout from the one to cut the score to 20-17 with just seven seconds left in the half.
Then the Seminoles exploded for 21 points in the third quarter - a period that lasted 53 minutes.
A blocked kick by Lenny Chavers seemed to ignite the Seminoles in the second quarter. Joe Wessel picked up that attempted punt and ran it in 8 yards for a touchdown. Later, Wessel blocked a punt himself. He ran that one in too, on a 34-yard play.
In a game of many key plays and more than 100 yards in penalties against Florida State, one of the big moments came when Jesse Solomon intercepted a pass after Arizona State got a first down at FSU's 11 with the Seminoles leading 38-30 in the early moments of the last quarter.
The 3,762 fans who watched the game on closed-circuit TV in the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center and those at the stadium saw a contest marked by some amazing offensive statistics, Arizona State accounted for 651 yards total offense, the most ever against Florida State - the ols record, 606, was set by Houston in 1973. Florida State gained 568 yards, giving the two teams a total of 1219 yards, another FSU single-game record. That old record, 1063 yards, was set in the FSU-Auburn game on Oct. 13.
Arizona State quarterback Jeff Van Raaphorst completed 38 of 59 passes for 532 yards and four touchdowns. The yardage ranked him eighth on the NCAA all-time single-game list.
At the start, Arizona State moved vigorously from its 21 following the opening kickoff.
After two Darryl Clack runs gained little, quarterback Jeff Van Raaphorst found flanker Aaron Cox with a 38-yard pass to FSU's 37. Clack's running led on to the 26. Then Cox pulled down a 21-yard pass at the 5 for a first and goal.
Florida State stiffened, stopping three runs off the right side. Fourth down at the 1, and Luis Zendejas kicked an 18-yard field goal for 3-0.
A Greg Allen run for 4, and Jessie Hester's catch of an Eric Thomas toss for 7 got FSU from its 21 to the 32. But the bid played out short of the 40, and Louis Berry punted to the Arizona State 25.
Up the middle came Clack for 12. Then Clack snared a pass for 22, and Cox grabbed another - this one for 15 at FSU's 27. Two Mike Crawford runs attained the 16.
Third down at the 13, and Doug Allen hauled in another Van Raaphorst missile for the touchdown. The drive had consumed just eight plays and the home team led 10-0, after a point kick, with five minutes remaining in the quarter.
As Allen twice got stopped short - netting a bare yard - the Seminoles did little from their 20, and Berry had to punt again. This time the Sun Devils began at their 35.
On third down Allen collared a Van Raaphorst pass at FSU's 49. Clack banged for 7, and tight end Stein Koss caught a pass at the 33. Soon after, Clack turned receiver again, taking one at the 20. And Koss tucked a throw in at the 10 as the quarter ran out.
Three more plays and it was Raaphorst to Doug Allen for another touchdown on a 4-yard play that moved the score to 17-0.
Again the Seminoles were without good field position, starting at their 16 following a kickoff return from the 3 by Dwayne Denson.
On a sweep, Allen sailed to the 29.
Three more plays gained to the 37 before Berry punted 49 yards, placing Arizona State at its 24. Clack got 9 on a first-down run, but Raaphorst failed with a long pass and Crawford got nothing with his third-down run.
When Jim Meyer tried to punt, Len Chavers ripped through to block it - and Joe Wessel picked up the rolling ball at the 8 and scored. Derek Schmidt added a point, cutting the score to 17-7.
It was Florida State's seventh blocked kick of the season - and the third by Chavers. Arizona State got little on a run and two passes from its 26.
But as Meyer punted, a flag fell. Arizona State got new life at its 48 following a penalty. The Seminoles had too many men on the field.
On the following play, Van Raaphorst passed 23 yards to Allen at FSU's 29.
It came to fourth down at the 21, and Zendejas kicked a 38-yard field goal to shift the score to 20-7.
From the 18, Cletis Jones got 5. Thomas kept to the 29, and a late-hit penalty on the play lifted the Seminoles to their 44. Hit hard when he ran on a following play, Thomas fumbled but the ball rolled out of bounds at the Sun Devil 46. On a pitch, Allen rambled to the 39. Third-and-one at the 30, and an offsides moved FSU back to its 36. Thomas, apparently shaken from man earlier hit, missed on a screen pass.
With 4:26 left in the half, Schmidt booted a 52-yard field goal, cutting it to 20-10.
On a first-down play from the 20, Coker aired it out - throwing 45 yards to Hassan Jones at the Arizona State 35. After Allen got 5, Hassan caught a short one at the 24. Then Pat Carter, the freshman tight end, caught one at the 3.
Cletis Jones slammed to the 1. Coker missed with a surprise wide pass. Allen was short as the Seminoles called a timeout with 10 seconds remaining in the half.
On fourth down, Allen took a pitchout and scored on a sweep to his right. Schmidt's point cut the score to 20-17.
The clock showed just seven seconds. Arizona State had time for one incomplete pass, following the kickoff, before time ran out.
Outgained in the first quarter, 206 yards to 25, Florida State trailed in this department 284 to 162 at halftime on the strength of its rally.
Thomas, when he went out, had completed just one of six throws for 7 yards. Coker quickly connected on three of five for 72 in that one drive. Van Raaphorst, at this point, showed 16 completions of 25 throws for 212 yards.
With Cletis Jones popping 19 yards on successive runs, Florida State quickly moved from its 20 to its 45 at the start of the second half. Then Hassan Jones got a 23-yard pass at the Arizona State 31. Following an 8-yard grab by Hassan at the 23, Allen spun wide and got 17 to the 6.
Offsides cost the Seminoles 5. On a nifty cutback up the middle, Allen seemed to score - but clipping was called, apparently against Carter, and the Seminoles were put back at their 29.
After Allen got a yard, Coker hit Jessie Hester in the corner of the end zone for the touchdown on a 28-yard play, and Florida State was ahead for the first time 24-20.
Very quickly, a 28-yard pass to Cox vaulted Arizona State to midfield. Cox caught a pass and got loose on an apparent scoring run - but was out of bounds at FSU's 20.
Another pass gained the 12, but outside linebacker Brian Williams racked Clack for a loss of 5 at the 17 on third down. In came Zendejas to kick a 34-yard field goal that narrowed it to 24-23.
After Coker lost a yard, Allen took a handoff at the Florida State 19 and quickly broke clear, with Hassan Jones throwing a block at about the Arizona State 30 that helped spring him on an 81-yard scoring run. Schmidt swung his toe and FSU led 31-23.
After the Florida State defense checked the Sun Devils at their 27, a 51-yard punt left FSU at its 24.
Third down at the 31, and Hester pulled in a Coker throw just over midfield as a defensive back fell down - and abruptly the senior speedster was loose on a 69-scoring run. Another Schmidt point put the Seminoles up 38-23 with 3:51 left in the quarter.
Three lightning passes, the big one 19 to Allen, got Arizona State to FSU's 39.
Soon Allen caught a 21-yarder at the 14. Next play fullback Vince Amoia pulled in a 14-yard touchdown pass, narrowing it to 38-30.
Unable to move with runs from its 20, FSU punted. Under pressure, Berry's effort was a 34-yarder to the Sun Devil 42.
Crawford ran for 5 as the quarter ended.
Allen's 20-yard reception moved the sticks to the 33. Crawford ran for 11 and a personal-foul call against the Seminoles moved the home team to a first down at the 11.
But as Van Raaphorst threw under heavy pressure from Isaac Williams, he got intercepted by linebacker Jesse Solomon, who steamed up to the 23.
Two runs left FSU a yard short at the 32, and Coker sneaked for it, up to the 35. Two more Allen runs left the Seminoles a foot short, and again Coker sneaked for the first down, to the 46.
Soon Allen shot free on a 32-yard romp to the 18. The following play saw Allen hit the middle on a run to the 2. Whereupon, Cletis Jones literally walked in for the touchdown - the way it looked. The middle was that wide open. It jumped to 45-30 with 10 minutes to go.
With a bit over nine minutes left, Arizona State punted from its 34. Wessel tore through to block the boot, then picked up the ball and scored. That made it 52-30.
The clock showed 7:32 as the Sun Devils scored on a 4-yard pass to Cox. A try for two points failed, and it was 52-36.
Amoia got a touchdown from the 1 with 2:43 left, and Crawford followed with a two-point run that brought the score to 52-44.
Arizona State followed with an onside kick, but Florida State recovered.
Behind the running of Rosie Snipes, Florida State drove to the 2-yard line before yielding the ball with 11 seconds left as Coker was stopped at the 1 on fourth down.

Slip up.
FSU slides to 38-26 defeat.
COLUMBIA, SC - In this gone-crazy city, they called it the single most important football game in South Carolina history. One newspaper heralded it as the game of the century.
But what it was for Florida State was Frustration City.
The unbeaten Gamecocks put a hurting on the Seminoles like they have not known in a while, winning 38-26.
It could have been - maybe should have been - worse for a Florida State team that offensively, was nowhere near itself.
Final statistics will show you that FSU outgained South Carolina, 493 yards to 474. If ever figures lied, these do.
With Kirk Coker, the starter at quarterback, nursing a hip pointer and, later, a cut chin, and with Eric Thomas, the regular at the position, nursing a more severe hip-pointer, Florida State could get little going when it really mattered.
South Carolina's 17-7 halftime lead and 31-7 margin in the third quarter are more relevant numbers.
In addition to Coker and Thomas, the Seminoles called on red-shirt freshman Danny McManus at quarterback. Between them, they were intercepted seven times - four by the pesky senior free safety Bryant Gilliard. Coker was 12-for-23 for 207 yards and was the victim of three thefts. Thomas was 5-for-16 for 86, with two interceptions, and McManus 5-for-9 for 41 yards with two of his tosses stolen.
FSU often seemed to be tentative on offense. South Carolina was able to apply great pressure on Coker, who was making his first start. Greg Allen nursed a sore knee, and his circumstances scarcely helped. He ran five times for minus-1 yard.
Meanwhile, Rosie Snipes, going much of the way at tailback, raced for 151 in 19 carries. Another busy fellow for the Seminoles was Jessie Hester, who snared 10 passes for 170 yards.
While South Carolina capitalized on a whopping nine FSU turnovers - two fumbles plus the interceptions - the Seminoles collected just four, all on fumbles. None of 18 Carolina passes were intercepted.
Thomas Dendy, with 113 yards in 14 carries, became the first back to run for as much as 100 yards against the Seminoles in this unusual season.
Florida State took an early 7-0 lead on a 3-yard scamper by Snipes. It lasted for less than two minutes. From its 20, the home team scored in four plays, Dendy breaking loose for the final 57.
Soon a 27-yard field goal by Scott Hagler had South Carolina in front for good at 10-7. It jumped to 17-7 by intermission as Dendy's 2-yard run capped an 86-yard movement in just eight plays. Florida State, in that first half, had first downs at Carolina's 13, 26 and 33 but got nothing. Derek Schmidt, the freshman kicker who had been so true in early season, missed a pair of 39-yard tries for field goals, as well as a 56-yarder later.
And then Raynard Brown broke it open with a 99-yard scoring return of the second-half kickoff, after it seemed that Billy Allen had him stopped. That made it 24-7.
It climbed to 31-7 on an 8-yard pass, Allen Mitchell to Bill Bradshaw. This one had been paved by an FSU fumble at its 44.
And it became 38-7 as Danny Smith took a 4-yard pass from Mitchell to polish off a 60-yard drive with 5:28 still left in the third quarter.
Only then was FSU able to rally.
Hester scored on a 16-yard toss from Thomas with three minutes remaining in that wild quarter.
Later Schmidt got a 26-yard field goal, and Stanley Scott a safety as he tackled quarterback Mike Hold in the Gamecock end zone. That made it 38-20.
It became 38-26 with 3:02 remaining as Pat Carter took a 3-yard pass from McManus.
"A great win," said Joe Morrison, a happy winning coach. "It wasn't pretty. We played well in that first half - very well. Then we got the big kickoff return in the second half.
"That was probably the biggest play of the game."
Some thought Brown's knee touched the ground on that pivotal play. "I got under it, and I caught it," said Brown. "The ref didn't say anything. So I ran."
Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden seemed puzzled, disbelieving.
"I can't remember us playing like that," he said, 'in a long, long time."
Bowden alluded to the numerous slips of receivers and runners, as well as other obvious mistakes.
"We were not quite ready," he said, "I might have had 'em too tight.
"It was just one of those nights."
While 9-0 South Carolina covets a berth in the Orange Bowl, the 6-2-1 Seminoles' best bet now may be the Dec. 22 Citrus in Orlando. There should be some options, but with this loss Florida State may expect no bowl as bug as the Gator.
On the other hand, it may still be able to choose from among a few others.

Chattanooga chewed 37-0.
FSU churns out homecoming win.
TALLAHASSEE, FL – Running the ball 64 of 82 times, as it pretty well was determined to do, Florida State’s football team won 37-0 here Saturday night, as it pretty well figured to do.
And now 7-2-1, the Seminoles very probably nailed down a berth for themselves in the Dec. 22 Citrus Bowl.
Tennessee-Chattanooga was not that bad, just out of its Division 1-AA league.
The 6-4 Moccasins, champions of the Southern Conference, have some post-season action awaiting, too – in playoffs that start next Saturday.
“After playing these guys tonight,” said Coach Buddy Nix, “anybody that we should play will look like they’re in slow motion.”
As Bobby Bowden moved his homecoming record to 9-0 for his Florida State head-coaching time, a crowd of 55,443 saw the Seminoles roll to 454 yards on the ground – not quite a school record, but close to the 479 against Western Carolina in ’81.
The nation’s leading scoring team going in, FSU came as close as possible to matching it’s 37.2 average.
Two backs – Rosie Snipes and Cletis Jones – gained more than 100 yards, and Cedric Jones almost made it. On 22 carries, Snipes got 151 yards and two touchdowns, Cletis 111 in 14 and Cedric 86 in just seven.
Apparently having had his fill of high-scoring games on both sides, Bowden said his players – particularly the defense – needed a game like this.
“Somebody said it was our first shutout in 44 games,” said Bowden.
Correct. Going back to a 17-0 opener against Louisville in ’81.
FSU’s defense restricted the Moccasins to 165 yards, seven times sacking the quarterback. Gerald Nichols and Isaac Williams got him twice. Fred Jones, Billy Allen and Stanley Scott had one apiece.
It most likely was just the sort of effort Florida State wanted prior to its big Dec. 1 date with Florida – including, perhaps, some rough spots that will better enable the coaches to get the players’ attention.
Eric Thomas (hip pointer) never played and Kirk Coker went most of the way at quarterback, spelled by freshman Danny McManus on a final drive that netted a late touchdown.
“Coker did well, and we were glad that Eric did not have to play,” said Bowden. “It means extra time for Thomas to heal.
“What we did tonight was just basic football.”
Most of the evening, Florida State moved methodically. But the yardage kept growing. With a total of 618, FSU averaged 7.5 per snap.
It was 10-0 after a quarter as the Seminoles scored on Derek Schmidt’s 31-yard field goal and a 6-yard run by Snipes following a weak punt that provided field position at the Tennessee-Chattanooga 38.
FSU was obliged to punt only once – following the game’s opening series.
Twice Florida State fumbled – the only turnovers by either team all evening – deep in Moccasin territory, following first downs at the 3 and the 24. Still, FSU put points on the board five of the first seven times it got the ball.
In the second quarter, 10 more points came on a 43-yard Schmidt field goal and a 3-yard Snipes run following a 29-yard punt return by Darrin Holloman to the Tennessee-Chattanooga 28.
From 20-0 at halftime, the score jumped to 27-0 on a Coker pass of 47 yards to Jessie Hester. For the night, Coker hit 10 of 17 tosses for 164 yards and Hester grabbed seven for 117.
The third quarter had one special saving grace. In contrast to the previous two the Seminoles had played, it lasted only 30 minutes. The one at Arizona State had gone 53, and the one at South Carolina 56.
Ten last-quarter points finished it off. Schmidt popped through a 22-yarder for three, and Cedric Jones got a touchdown from the 3 as freshman Danny McManus directed a smooth, 89-yard scoring drive in 13 plays that featured the running of Jones – a starter at fullback last season but hobbled for a very long while by injuries.
“Florida State has a great football team,” said Nix. “I told our kids in the locker room we had better get used to playing teams like this because we are going to play a bunch of them in the next few years.”
Nix said it may come as a surprise to the people back home, but he had actually felt his team could win.
Bowden probably need not worry about any fat-cat feeling by his team from this game. There were some good moments, and some not-so-good ones.
On Saturday, with a victory over Kentucky as Mississippi State lost to LSU, the Gators were assured of a final perch atop the Southeastern Conference standings – unless the league takes that away because of the school’s NCAA probation.
“I’m so happy they finally won that thing,” said Bowden. “They deserve it.”
“They kept coming in here every time they lost it, and taking it out on us.”

Gators do the gigging.
Seminoles slosh to 27-17 defeat.
TALLAHASSEE, FL – Going in, Bobby Bowden considered three factors the stuff of nightmares.
And all three – heavy rain, turnovers, a trio pf slashing runners – hit his Florida State team where it hurt as the best football team University of Florida has ever known prevailed 27-17 here Saturday.
Only in the first half was Florida State in it. Reaching deep, particularly on defense, the Seminoles repeatedly threatened to get back in it – and in the second quarter came to within 7-3. Otherwise, about all they did was threaten.
“We were just not good enough,” Bowden summed up. Short. Simple.
That might have been so under almost any circumstances, but when a severe thunderstorm burst two minutes into the first quarter, it transformed Campbell Stadium back into the swampland it once was – and perhaps sent what chances the Seminoles had down swollen drains.
The first of four Florida State turnovers – a fumble that came ominously just as the rain started – paved a 7-0 Florida lead. And a second turnover – again a fumble – ruptured a stunning 94-yard drive when it came on first down at the Gator 2.
“You’re not going to beat anybody – not anybody good – when you play like that,” said Bowden of the two costly early fumbles.
Both teams found the ball hard to handle on the wet field – the rain tapered to a light sprinkle in the second half – but Florida lost only one of its fumbles, while the Seminoles gave up three. Each team had a single pass intercepted.
Of 330 total yards, Florida got 259 running, and its three big-and-fierce backs got 254 of that. Lorenzo Hampton and Neal Anderson got 94 each – the latter getting 62 of his on one run – and John L. Williams 66.
“I have not seen anybody close to having backs as hard to bring down as Florida’s are,” said Bowden.
Yet the Seminoles did a fine job of stopping Florida’s running game where it had been most effective – inside. Williams popped his 62-yarder outside.
In one sense, that running did not hurt all that much. Kerwin Bell completed only five of 14 passes for 71 yards, but two completions were rippers. Frankie Neal caught a 33-yarder over the middle for the first touchdown, and Williams got the second on a 5-yard pass play.
“It probably would have been a funner and a more emotional game except for the rain,” said Bell. “The rain made it a workman’s game.
“These were the worst conditions I ever played in. It was an inch deep out there. It messes up your passing game a lot.”
Several Florida players, in the dressing room afterward, said they were not up for this game and saw the rain as a big asset.
Whatever, Florida won its fourth straight over the Seminoles and took a 20-6-1 lead in this series before a crowd of 58,930 – biggest ever in Campbell. The Gators closed 9-1-1 for their best-ever regular season, and left Florida State 7-3-1 for its Dec. 22 Citrus Bowl date with Georgia.
Galen Hall, the Gators’ pleased first-year coach, said he thought his team merited No. 1 rank no matter happened in any of the bowls.
“I thought our defense played well all the way,” he said. “Anytime you hold Florida State to 17 points, it is a great defensive game.”
For a little while there, it seemed this might be anything but a defensive struggle. And, for a little while there, it seemed Florida State had figured a way.
After they stopped the Gators on the game-opening series, good field position came at the 50 following a punt. But on third down, quarterback Kirk Coker pitched out poorly under pressure, and Florida’s Mark Korff claimed that fumble at Florida State’s 48.
A couple of plays later Bell found Neal free over the middle for a 33-yard TD pass. Cornerback Eric Riley had slipped, and safety Brian McCrary missed a diving tackle.
After a punting exchange backed FSU to its 6, the Seminoles drove on the ground against Florida in a way no one thought any team could, Rosie Snipes led that charge, culminating with a first down at Florida’s 2 – and a fumbled exchange as Coker moved to hand off to Cletis Jones. Florida tackle Tommy Duhart recovered.
In that first quarter the Seminoles gained 100 yards rushing – most of it on that drive in the rain. The rest of the way FSU netted only 78 on the ground. Snipes finished with 108 on 20 runs as the Seminoles totaled 274 yards on offense. Passing brought just 96 yards, with Coker 5-for-11 and 48, Eric Thomas 4-for-7 and 48.
In the second quarter FSU got a shot from the Florida 9 after Roger Sibbald, trying to field a punt, had the ball wrestled away from him by freshman linebacker Paul McGowan. Unable to penetrate beyond the 6, the Seminoles settled for Derek Schmidt’s 23-yard field goal.
Florida retaliated immediately as Anderson went wide for 62 yards to the FSU 16. Three plays later Williams took a 5-yard pass for a touchdown that made it 14-3.
It became 17-3 after a Ricky Easmon interception put Florida in business at FSU’s 30. Eventually, after a penalty rubbed out an apparent touchdown, Bobby Raymond booted a 34-yard field goal. Just 48 seconds remained in the half.
Florida made it 24-3 on its first opportunity of the third quarter – an opportunity paved by Ricky Nattiel’s 27-yard punt return to the FSU 37. Two Bell passes gained the 8, and Hampton took it in from there.
A McCrary interception gave FSU a shot from Florida’s 27. Coker’s 11-yard pass to Hester brought the touchdown and a 24-10 score.
The defense backed Florida up and produced punts that gave FSU chances from its 47 and 41, but the Seminoles failed to get much going.
A Snipes fumble at the FSY 32, with Sibbald recovering, led to a 26-yard Raymond field goal in the fourth quarter.
With 6:27 to go, Thomas took FSU on a drive from its 9 to a touchdown that came on his 8-yard pass to Hester.
Flags flew throughout, Florida drawing 116 yards on 14 penalties, FSU 52 on eight.
“The only way we could have won was to play errorless ball,” said Bowden. “Our effort was excellent. Our execution was not.
“We got some big plays defensively. We could not get ‘em offensively.”
Florida’s Hall wished the Seminoles well in their bowl.
“It is a great tribute to them,” he said, “that it was this tough of a football game. They fought hard all game.”

’Noles block Bulldogs’ victory.
Big plays salvage 17-17 tie.
ORLANDO, FL – Lenny Chavers and Joe Wessel, two special teams’ specialists, became the unlikely heroes in an even unlikelier finish Saturday, helping struggling Florida State salvage 17-17 tie with Georgia in the 39th annual Florida Citrus Bowl.
Chavers rescued the Seminoles when he blocked a Georgia punt, allowing Wessel to scoop it up and run 14 yards for the touchdown that set up a tying two-point conversion with 3:58 to play.
A capacity crowd of 51,821 watched in Orlando Stadium, along with the bowl’s first national television audience, as the two Southern football powers failed to generate much offensive consistency.
Until Chavers’ heroics, stubborn Georgia basically had stuffed the vaunted FSU scoring machine. The big-gun offense that was third in the nation with a 35-point average had no pop.
“Somebody had to step forward and make the big play. We couldn’t wait much longer,” Chavers said. “We’ve been doing it all year. I guess it was just my time again.”
Those kinds of plays are FSU’s trademark this season. The Seminoles usually win – or lose – by the big play. This time they tied by it.
It was Florida State’s ninth blocked punt of the season and Chavers’ fourth. Six of those blocks resulted in touchdowns. So did this one. Chavers, a nose guard from DeLand, blew through the middle of the line and had no problem batting away Chip Andrews’ kick.
The touchdown closed the gap to 17-15, and FSU was ready with another gizmo play. On the two-point conversion, quarterback Eric Thomas pitched right toward tailback Tony Smith, but wide receiver Darrin Holloman intercepted the pitch on a reverse and streaked around the left side for the tying score.
After Florida State tied the score, neither team could mount a serious threat, and with the scoreboard clock not functioning – it went out early in the final period. – there was confusion on both sidelines.
Georgia lined up to go for a first down on a fourth-and-1 at the Bulldogs’ 29, and quarterback James Jackson bobbled the snap. But a dead-ball foul negated the play, and the Bulldogs punted again. Florida State’s Jessie Hester was dropped for a 19-yard loss on an end around, forcing FSU to punt it right back.
With less than two minutes remaining, Wessel made his first career interception during one of his relatively infrequent appearances as a defensive back. Jackson’s pass went through the hands of receiver Jimmy Hockaday and right to Wessel.
The Seminoles, though, had run out of tricks and punted the ball back to Georgia again with 21 seconds left. After two deep incomplete passes, Georgia turned to Kevin Butler, who fell agonizingly short – perhaps 3 or 4 yards – on a 71-yard field goal attempt.
“You have ties that you’re pleased with and ties you’re disappointed with,” Georgia Coach Vince Dooley said. “This one was so disappointing because we really should have won.”
Georgia (7-4-1) played its best game since beating Kentucky, 37-7, Oct. 27. Its defense was solid, pressuring Thomas all day, limiting FSU’s passing attack to 85 yards.
Georgia’s offense, anemic in the final three losses of the regular season, showed some spark under the guidance of Jackson, who replaced starter Todd Williams midway in the first period and wound up the game’s most valuable player. Williams hyperextended his knee and didn’t return.
“I felt like we played well enough to win,” Dooley said. “But we didn’t execute on the punt. It cost us the game. This was one of those losing ties.”
Florida State (7-3-2) showed some flashes of brilliance but no consistency. The Seminoles drove 83 yards on their opening possession, but Smith fumbled a pitch by Thomas on the Georgia 8-yard line, and Georgia’s Andy Loy recovered.
Florida State tried a variety of plays in the first half – a pass by receiver Hassan Jones, an end around, a couple of long passes – but trailed, 14-0 at halftime. It was the first time FSU had been shut out in a half since 1976.
“Our offense was like a nightmare out there in the first half,” FSU Coach Bobby Bowden said. “We had no communication out there. I think we tried to outsmart ourselves.”
Georgia scored on touchdown runs of 4 and 1 yards by freshman tailback Lars Tate, who was the game’s outstanding player. Jackson set up Tate’s first score with a 50-yard pass to Fred Lane.
Georgia cornerback Kevin Harris of Eustis set up the second touchdown when he intercepted a pass by Thomas at the FSU 13 just 1:22 before halftime. Harris, named the game’s outstanding defensive player, also intercepted a pass in the first period.
FSU used a different game plan in the second half, throwing passes under Georgia’s coverages and employing option running plays. With Roosevelt Snipes out with a sprained ankle, Smith started running more effectively.
The Seminoles took the first second-half possession and drove 67 yards before Derek Schmidt kicked a 33-yard field goal. The drive was stopped by an ineligible receiver penalty, one of eight penalties against FSU.
Smith atoned for his fumble by scoring from the 1 with 14:21 to play, capping a 9-play, 39-yard drive. Now trailing 14-9, FSU went for a two-point conversion, but Thomas was stopped cold on an option play.
Butler kicked Georgia into an eight-point lead on the next possession with a 36-yard field goal. A penalty was called on the play when a diving Wessel roughed Butler. Georgia decided to let the field goal stand rather than take the penalty and try for a touchdown.
