He played baseball for two seasons before deciding to come to college. He had an excellent spring practice and going into the fall is listed as the No. 1 strong linebacker. Very quick he also has good speed. Coaches consider him a "big play" football player who also has consistency. A fine athlete.

Wally Woodham, 5-11, 170, QB, Tallahassee

Gary Woolford, 6-1, 180, DB, Joliet, Ill. - Red shirted last season after transferring from Western Illinois. In his prep days he set an Illinois High School record in the high hurdles. Seminoles dropped 31-20.

LUBBOCK, TX – With 9:49 left in the football game, Florida State was very much in it. With 9:39 showing on the clock, the Seminoles were altogether out of it.

Scoring two touchdowns within 10 seconds of one another in the fourth quarter, Texas Tech won it 31-20 here Saturday before 35,268 fans on a cool, cloudy night that followed almost two days of continuous rain. But there was little or no precipitation during the game.

It was about as close as 31-20, and it wasn’t.

Florida State was behind 13-0 before it got up a good sweat, as Tech scored on its first two possessions.

Ironically, Florida State outgained Tech 326 yards to 290. Ironically, Florida State’s kicking game – which had seemed so vulnerable with two inexperienced players handling punting and placekicking – was almost flawless.

Defensively, the Seminoles couldn’t stop the Raider when it counted most.

Leon Bright got 102 yards in 20 runs for the Seminoles, but Tech had two backs who just about matched his production. The Raiders’ Rufus Myers got 102 in 14, and Larry Isaac 95 in 13.

For all practical purposes, Tech couldn’t pass a lick. It did it on the ground, with the veer. Trying to stop the running game, the Seminoles shifted Greg Johnson from tackle to middle guard – and held the Raiders for awhile.

Myers scored Tech’s first two TDs on one-yard runs, capping drives of 80 and 66 yards.

The Seminoles pulled to within 13-7 in the second quarter on a 17-yard pass, Clyde Walker to Larry Key and the score stood up at halftime.

On its first turn with the ball in the last half, Tech drove 72 yards, Isaac scoring from the one. But the Seminoles came right back, on a splendid daring 80-yard drive that saw two successful fourth-down gambles. Bright got the touchdown from the one, cutting it to 19-14 in the early moments of the fourth quarter.

Tech retaliated with an 82-yard scoring march, Billy Taylor going in from 16 yards out.

Bright lost the ensuing kickoff on a fumble that Tech claimed. Rodney Allison needed a single play to score from the 21 on a sweep, and abruptly it was 31-14.

Florida State, losing its first game to Texas Tech in three meetings, got a late, face-saving touchdown on Steve Mathieson’s 24-yard pass to Mike Barnes.

The Seminoles ran for 174 yards, but passing was a big key in the offensive effort. Mike Shumann made three enormously timely clutch catches for 59 yards. Clyde Walker hit on 10 of his 14 throws for 128 yards.

FSU Coach Darrell Mudra, who came down from the pressbox to the sidelines in the second half, thought Texas Tech “executed exceptionally well and they certainly didn’t make any errors.”

He added: “They found some of our defensive weaknesses, and took advantage of them. They were a lot more sure of themselves on that artificial turf than we were. When they had to have a big defensive play they got it, and when we had to have one, we didn’t get it. I expected us to play better defense.

“Ecomet Burley (Tech nose guard) played a super game. Our centers are not that bad – he’s just a fine football player.

“I am disappointed. I thought we would play better.”

Tech Coach Steve Sloan, too, referred to his Raiders’ big plays on defense. He thought Taylor’s TD run was the turning point.

David Didley. Tech center, thought FSU’s shift of Johnson to nose guard helped the Raiders. “He really didn’t know how to play the middle,” said Didley, “He was vulnerable to cut-off blocks, and we were able to make our running game go.”

Seminoles win first of year!
Utah State is outlasted 17-8.

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Forcing some mistakes, gratefully accepting some others from out of the blue, Florida State won itself a football game here Saturday night over Utah State 17-8.

The Seminoles’ sorely pressed defense, target of extensive criticism all week long, contributed at least as much as the offense that was pretty well contained in a scoreless last half.

Turning point came early. Utah State lost a fumble on its second play from scrimmage, paving a 38-yard field goal by freshman Keith Singletary.

Then Greg Van Ness, the Aggies’ lefthanded quarterback who had passed so effectively last week against Utah, saw his first throw of the night intercepted by Bobby Jackson.

That not only checked a Utah State scoring threat at FSU’s 28, it also led to the Seminoles’ first touchdown – a 79-yard drive capped by Clyde Walker and Ed Beckman collaborating for a 42-yard scoring pass.

Leon (Neon) Bright, running for 138 yards on 30 carries, spurred the Seminoles to within range early in the second quarter, and Walker connected with Larry Key on a 27-yard payoff pass, stretching the score to 17-0.

What might have been a runaway was quickly averted. Utah State came back on the next series, going 74 yards, mainly on the mighty little legs of Louie Giammona who scored on a 5-yard run. A botched snap on the point-after attempt resulted in a successful pass for two. (Utah State’s center had trouble snapping the ball all evening.)

A crowd of 28,685, some below expectations following afternoon ran, sat in dry comfort and saw the Seminoles win their first one in Campbell Stadium since Nov. 11, 1972, when Tulsa fell 23-21.

Giammona got his ninth straight 100-yard-plus game, picking up a big 155 total on 26 carries. But the Seminoles checked him well in the early going, until they were ahead 17-0, and he wasn’t the factor he might have been. It wasn’t a single-game record for a runner against FSU. In 1968 Virginia Tech sprung converted linebacker Ken Edwards for 197.

Florida State defenders – with cornerbacks Lee Nelson and Bobby Jackson plus freshman tackle Willie Jones coming up with some particularly big plays – saw to it that Utah State did not play catch-up football effectively. Repeatedly, the pass attempts of Van Ness were broken up. He hit on only seven of 17 throws for a mere 72 yards.

Utah State netted only 222 yards of offense. Though Giammona got 155, FSU defenders threw Van Ness and others for losses that resulted in a team net of only 150 on the ground.

While Utah State had six turnovers on a field dampened by preliminary rain, Florida State had only two. But the Seminoles were penalized a whopping 87 yards to the visitors’ 15.

Nelson came up with two interceptions of Van Ness throws, and Jackson another.

The Seminoles ran up 351 yards with their winged-T attack, including 229 running. Though Walker hit on only five of 12 passes, he got 110 yards and two TDs out of that. And Florida State succeeded at ball control, 70 plays to 58.

“It really makes you feel good,” said FSU Coach Darrell Mudra just after, “to come back with a performance like that. If we could ever put it all together, we could beat a lot of teams. We should have had another score or two – but maybe it’s just as well we had to struggle.

FSU gets out early as defense tightens.

Moving out fast, capitalizing much on Utah State errors, Florida State’s football team gained its first victory at home in almost three years here Saturday night.

Score was 17-8.

Not since Nov. 11, 1972 (Tulsa 23-21) had the Seminoles won one in Campbell Stadium.

The Seminoles opened short at defensive tackle. Phil Jones had not recovered, as anticipated from the flu, and did not dress out. Seminoles were late coming out of the dressing room, bringing about a 4-minute delay in kickoff.

Two plays after the kickoff, quarterback Greg Van Ness fumbled when hit as he ran wide. Randy Coffield hopped on the ball for Florida State at the 25. Cornerback Bobby Jackson’s tackle appeared to precipitate the fumble.

After Leon Bright was stopped short on two runs, a pass bounced off Fred Miller.

Whereupon, freshman Keith Singletary booted home a 38-yard field goal for 3-0.

Following series saw the Seminoles check Utah State’s running game at the 28. But a 50-yard punt, plus a clipping penalty, backed the Seminoles to their 21.

On third down Bright fumbled – a short shower hit the field about an hour before the kickoff – and Utah State claimed the ball at the 28.

Right away Jackson intercepted a Van Ness pass at the 10, got it back to the 21.

Larry Key’s third-down run for seven kept the Seminoles moving at the 37. On third-and-nine Clyde Walker hit Key with a pass over the middle, 19 to the Aggies’ 43.

Three bursts by Bright gained the 32, but another clip pushed FSU back to the 47. After a short pass to Rudy Thomas, Walker lobbed about a 20-yarder to tight end Ed Beckman, who broke through and scored on a 42-yard play. Singletary added a point for 10-0.

A surprise 11-yard pass to Paul Tippets, on third-and-one, got Utah State its initial first down, at the Aggies’ 43.

Freshman tackle, Willie Jones’ smashing of Paul Tidwell for a 9-yard loss on a flat pass stymied the Aggies. A punt placed FSU at its 22.

The Seminoles sent in their second-team backfield, and promptly Thomas busted for 22 yards as the quarter ended.

First play of the second quarter saw Thomas erupting again, 28 to the Aggies’ 28. Jimmy Heggins got 11 then three to the 14. Steve Mathieson then whipped a pass to Beckman at the two.

Really fine defensive play by Utah State – much more than anything else – netter Thomas exactly nothing after three runs. On fourth down – almost a busted play – Mathieson’s hurried pass to wingback Bobby McKinnon was broken up.

Utah State couldn’t get beyond the eight, punted up to its 40.

Bright went wide to the 26. Three plays later Key took a short pass from Walker and, with some dazzling effort, scored on a 27-yard play. Singletary kicked the point for 17-0.

On third-and-six at the Utah State 30, Louie Giammona – who had done little previously – popped free on a draw play, 32 yards to FSU’s 38. When it came up third-and-seven, Van Ness passed to Orlando Nelson, 29 to the six. Two plays later, Giammona scored from the five. A bad snap on the extra-point try saw everything come up roses for Utah State, when Don Schnell, the holder, reared up and passed to Nelson for two points, narrowing it to 17-8.

From the 15, after the kickoff, Miller picked up seven, but the Seminoles moved no further than the 23. Bill Duley punted to the Aggies’ 42 – the Seminoles’ first punt. Soon Utah State punted back, to FSU’s 23.

Bright, on successive wide runs, ripped off 30 and 19 yards to the Aggies’ 28.

On third-and-four, Beckman made a hot catch of Walker’s 17-yard throw for a first down at the five.

But, with time running out in the half, the Seminoles came up with a bad play call. With no FSU timeouts left, Bright was sent ramming into the line. No gain – and the clock ran. Walker threw out of bounds on the next play, stopping the clock. Third play saw Walker blind-sided for a loss of 10. And the half ran out before the Seminoles could get off another play.

At this point, Florida State led in first downs, 13 to 3, in rushing yardage 169 to 76, in pass yardage, 122 to 35, and in penalty yardage, 34 to 0. Bright had picked up 88 yards running, Giammona 70.

Utah State quickly forged goo position after the second-half kickoff.

Florida State couldn’t move at all on runs from its 23. A punt gave the visitors the ball at their 47.

Two Giammona runs gained the 42. Van Ness was short on a third-down run to the 34 – but a late hit drew a penalty and provided a first down at the 19.

Two plays and a holding call on the visitors put the ball back at the 34. The Aggies worked down to the 20, but it came up fourth down.

A bad snap on a field-goal try ended with kicker Tom Mayes passing – and Lee Nelson intercepting at the 14.

Three FSU runs got little. Duley punted to the Aggie 42. After three plays got but four, Utah State punted back, to the FSU 22.

Bright’s three runs for 21 led to successive first downs, up to the 47. More Bright running, along with Miller efforts, had the ball at the visitors’ 42 as the last quarter started.

Walker passed to Mike Shumann down at the 16 – but a holding penalty rubbed it out. Next play Walker lost 15 more trying to throw. Duley punted to the Aggie 21.

An interception that would have put the Seminoles in quick business again escaped Joe Camps. Next play Giammona, on a pitch, swept for 24 to the 45.

There followed an errant exchange.

First a bad pitchout resulted in a fumble that Waldo Williams claimed for FSU at the Utah State 38.

Then, two plays later, linebacker Brian Longuevan intercepted a Walker pass at the 35 and gained the 50.

Dave Porter soon caught Van Ness for an 8-yard loss, back to FSU’s 44. But Van Ness shot a 19-yard pass to Tidwell on the following play, down to FSU’s 37.

Giammona carried six straight times – to the 32, 30, 18, 6, 4 and 2. Van Ness struggled to the one, where it came to fourth down.

Fumbled snap. The Seminoles took over at the one. Six and a half minutes remained.

Bright struggled to the five, was hurt and was helped off the field.

Rudy Thomas carried to the 10, but a personal-foul penalty put the ball back at the five – with loss of down. A pass was broken up.

After the Seminoles were further penalized for delay, Duley punted from deep in the end zone, up to the FSU 42.

With 4:41 left, Lee Nelson intercepted a second-down pass, got up to FSU’s 46.

Bright got loose to Utah State’s 35, but again the Seminoles were penalized – clipping, back to misfield.

Soon Duley punted to the 15. Sharp pass defense curtailed Van Ness’s attempt to get out of the trap.

Running no risk of a fumble, FSU let the punt roll 54 yards to its 29. Only 1:02 remained.

Florida State killed time. Utah State called timeouts. Finally the Seminoles punted and the Aggies had time for a 9-yard pass before the clock made it final. Florida State had won a football game.

Iowa State 10, Florida State 6

Tribe goes boom, puff, puff, puff, puff.
Iowa State wins 10-6.

TALLAHASSEE, FL – All dressed up in hopeful clothes following an encouraging first two games, Florida State’s football team went nowhere here Saturday night – and in a most surprising manner.

Iowa State won the game 10-6.

Ready beforehand to let it all hang out, the Seminoles did.

They hung it out with a stunning opening bomb, Clyde Walker to Mike Shumann, for 78 yards and a touchdown that got them a 6-0 lead that stood for a half.

And then they hung it out with an equally stunning mistake – a squib kick that went awry to open the third quarter.

That squib kick – designed to bounce around and hopefully stay away from dangerous runback artist Luther Blue – looked like a deliberate onside attempt, but it wasn’t that.

Iowa State recovered it. Next play Mike Williams skipped 57 yards to a touchdown that put the Big Eight team in front to stay.

It was a sad night for Florida State’s kicking game, terribly suspect in pre-season but surprisingly good in the first two games. Keith Singletary, the freshman from nearby Thomasville who had fared well in those first two, had an extra-point attempt blocked, then missed chip-shot field goals from 24, 20 and again 24 yards out.

But offensive miscues –delay penalties among other things – did the Seminoles in as far as much as anything else.

Florida State’s defenders, also suspect in pre-season, played link gangbusters.

With two running backs gaining more than 100 yards apiece – Williams 129, Jim Wingender 112 – Iowa State rolled up 367 yards on the attack, including 287 on the ground. But, save for Williams’ scoring run, the defense time after time checked the Cyclones, holding after the visitors had gained a first down at the FSU 13, and later after first downs at the FSU 5 and the FSU 3. Moreover, another threat was contained by Bobby Jackson’s interception at the eight.

The Seminoles ran up and down the field – 343 yards of offense with 175 running – to repeated frustration.

Leon Bright failed in his effort to become the first back in FSU history to gain 100 yards in three successive games, ending with 71 on 15 carries. Shumann, with four receptions for 130 yards, was once more a significant offensive factor.

Fumbles figured prominently, Iowa State lost four, the Seminoles two. Florida State’s next-to-last offensive effort was stymied at midfield following the lone interception off Walker, who hit on 10 of 19 throws for 168 yards. The Seminoles couldn’t get beyond their 23 on their very last offensive movement.

A crowd of 29,333, including a possible record number of students (about 12,000), whooped in vain on a pleasant, dry evening.

Things grew rather still after Doug Lentz put through a 37-yard field goal to make it 10-6 late in the third quarter. The effort capped an 80-yard drive.

“We certainly had all kinds of chances,” said FSU Coach Darrell Mudra, “I’ve never been around a team which deserved to win more. But our mistakes were too costly.

“We stayed with too basic an offense. We should have taken more chances. We’re going to study the films, and the people who made the mistakes we’re going to replace.

“It was probably a mistake to try for all three of those field goals. Maybe we should have gone for the score on the first one.

“Our kicking was the poorest part of the game. Iowa State played about like we thought they would. We figured them to make some mistakes, and they did. We just didn’t take advantage of them.”

Earle Brice, the Iowa State coach, was exuberant.

“When you give up a touchdown on the first play of the game,” he said, “and come back to win … that’s effort. We’re going to come together now.

“The Seminoles can play football. Bright and Key (Larry) are superb running backs. The Seminoles move the football; they’re clever. They adjusted to our defense well.”

Winning its second straight, Iowa State checked out of Campbell Stadium with a 2-1 record. Florida State is 1-2 with road games ahead at Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Florida.

Georgia Tech 30, Florida State 0

10/04/1975, Atlanta, Ga.

From the Tallahassee Democrat, October 5, 1975, page 45, by Bill McGrotha.

Seminoles go puff, puff … poof!
Tech cuts out 30-0 triumph.

ATLANTA, GA - Nobody got hurt. Not much anyhow.

And that was the only thing that remotely approached any silver lining in the cloud that enveloped Florida State's football team here Saturday afternoon on Grant Field before 35,261.

Whole thing was, as Georgia Tech won 30-0, after just three turns with the football - only 26 plays from scrimmage - the Yellow Jackets had a 20-0 lead.

Spicing it all with some imaginative timely play-calling on both offense and defense, Tech quickly forced the Seminoles out of their game plan.

Tech was either smart or lucky in its play calls. Perhaps both. And Tech had the good execution. Florida State's overall effort was error-ridden.

Those Tech calls made a hero for a day out of Steve Raible, a senior offensive end who's the fastest fellow (9.6 in the hundred) on the squad.

Twice. He scored on end-around plays, from 17 and 24 yards out. Once he scored on a duck-soup pass, a 42-yard play.

"A slow-footed gorilla could have caught that pass for a touchdown," commented Tech Coach Pepper Rodgers afterwards, "I don't think speed had anything to do with it. You writers could have scored on that one - we could have made a hero out of you."

Tech, operating without a huddle in the first half, churned for 367 yards running from its wishbone formation. That non-huddling "didn't hurt us," said FSU Coach Darrell Mudra. "It seemed like," he added, "the more we saw the wishbone the better job we did. When we started to improve defensively, it was too late."

The Seminoles had first turn with football on this gray, cool afternoon, and moved the ball well to midfield. Then, on a third-down draw play, a lineman went the wrong way, failed to make his block - and that was fairly typical of the sort of mistakes that plagued FSU the rest of the way.

First time Tech got the ball it moved 87 yards in 10 plays, big David Sims scoring from the three. Next time it was 64 yards in five plays, quarterback Danny Myers springing that surprise pass to Raible in third-and-short circumstances. Third time Tech got the ball it was 80 yards in 11 plays, the TD coming on Raible's first end-around for 17 yards, and the second quarter was young.

It stayed 20-0 until Don Bessilieu kicked a 38-yard field goal well into the third quarter. With about five minutes remaining in the game, Tech went 87 yards in four big plays, the big one a 49-yard romp by quarterback Myers (leading gainer for the game with 99 in 20 carries), with Raible scoring from 24 out.

The Seminoles, who managed 272 yards of offense (207 passing), rarely threatened. They got to Tech's 25 in the third quarter, to the Tech 12 in the fourth, but in vain. Hot runner Leon Bright, apparently bothered some by cramps, got only 35 yards in 11 runs but caught five passes for 56.

As Florida State went to the air 41 times, starter Clyde Walker hit 13 of 23 for 130, Steve Mathieson six of 18 for 77. Tech intercepted a couple, both tipped passes. Mike Shumann caught five throws, got 97 yards out of it.

Tech frequently blitzed FSU passers at the right time. Rodgers had remarked after the Clemson game last week that when the foes threw short, Tech covered long, and when they threw long Tech covered short. That wasn't the case Saturday.

Florida State did appear to play well defensively, after that disastrous early going, with linebacker Aaron Carter again prominent. That TD pass was the only one of four attempts that Tech completed; it was enough.

Whatever and however, Florida State was vulnerable to the surprise play - and the Seminoles were left with no opportunity to do any surprising of their own, as plotted.

As Tech moved its record to 3-1, Florida State was left 1-3 with a Blacksburg date next Saturday at Virginia Tech, 23-16 upset victors at Auburn yesterday.

It was the first time the Seminoles had been shut out since Florida put it on them 49-0 in the closing game of '73. Way back in 1952 Florida State played Tech for the first time, and that score was 30-0, too.

"Tech certainly did an excellent job of preparing for us," Mudra said in summary. "We made a lot of errors, but this happens sometimes when things are going badly. I thought this was the first game where we didn't show improvement from the week before."

Virginia Tech 13, Florida State 10

From the Tallahassee Democrat, October 12, 1975, page 45, by Bill McGrotha.

FSU caught short again 13-10.

BLACKSBURG, VA - Almost home free, Florida State got caught at the doorstep of apparent victory here Saturday afternoon.

Wayne Latimer's 61-yard field goal - a yard short of the national collegiate record set earlier this year by Air Force's Mike Lawson - with eight minutes remaining lifted Virginia Tech to a 13-10 homecoming triumph.

The long one came just on the heels of a 36-yard touchdown run by Roscoe Coles that tied it 10-10.

During the preceding timeout, Latimer, a senior out of Richmond, had carefully lined up and judges the effort. The kick was on target, right through the center, with some room to spare over the crossbar. He had a wind of perhaps 12 miles per hour going for him.

Earlier in that quarter Latimer had missed a 32-yard try for three.

A homecoming crowd of 37,000 sat in silence much of this sunny, warm afternoon.

On Clyde Walker's quarterback sneak from the one, capping a 72-yard drive, Florida State had grabbed a 7-3 lead in the second quarter, then stretched it to 10-3 on freshman Keith Singletary's 30-yard field goal in the third period.

The Seminoles, now losers in four of five starts this season, had one late chance to pull it out, driving from their 20 to the Tech 12, where it came to fourth down - and a decision to go for victory rather than a tying field goal.

But quarterback Walker found himself under too much pressure as he threw. Rudy Thomas caught the pass out of the end zone.

The outcome denied a full-cut hero's cloak for FSU freshman tackle Willie Jones, who plagued Tech wishbone quarterback Phil Rogers all afternoon, several time dumping him for losses, once forcing a fumble that FSU recovered - probably averting a Tech score after down-deep penetration. (Just after that stand, inside their 20, the suddenly aroused Seminoles drove to their lone touchdown).

Mainly on last-half accomplishment, Tech managed 243 yards with Coles getting 89 in 17 carries, Paul Adams 74 in 18. Rogers, a dangerous one, got only 41 in 25 runs.

Florida State had a slight edge in total yardage, 310 to 269. The Seminoles got 167 running as Leon Bright picked up 92 in 21 and freshman Gator Cherry 53 in 17.

Mike Shumann caught five of the seven passes Walker completed in 15 throws, and got 129 yards out of 'em. (The Seminoles thought Shumann should have caught at least one more that would have made the winning difference. On that final push, a throw to Shumann at the goal line was broken up by defender Flash Davis, who, from FSU's point of view, appeared guilty of flagrant interference on the play).

Florida State got flagged six times for 70 penalty yards in the game - Tech only one for two yards.

Once again, linebacker Aaron Carter was a notable one on defense for the Seminoles. A pressbox accounting gave him 15 tackles, two assists.

Despite an effort that was perhaps its best of the season, Florida State was again hamstrung by errors.

For example, Tech drove the first time it got the football to a 37-yard field goal by Latimer - but only after the Seminoles first had too many men on the field as the Gobblers lined up to punt. After calling timeout to correct the situation, the Seminoles were offsides when Tech did in fact punt. The penalty kept alive Tech's initial scoring drive.

A 23-16 upset winner over Auburn last week, the Gobblers, now 3-2, hardly resembled a potent team either defensively or offensively on this day.

"It was my decision not to go for the field goal," said FSU Coach Darrell Mudra. "Our kids don't need a tie, we need a win. On that fourth-down pass attempt, we missed a block on their end - and he was right in Walker's eyes.

"We beat ourselves. We can play better than we did today. However, our kids did play hard and with a lot of enthusiasm. We're just not consistent.

"I want to look at films before I say anything about the officiating. I will say this - the officials should be consistent and call things on both sides of the field."

Tech Coach Jimmy Sharpe said the manner of victory was "not how we planned the script, but we'll take 'em any way we can get 'em." Sharpe said he had called for a punt just before Latimer got his 61-yard field goal but that an assistant (Jack White) had talked him into going for three.

Interestingly, the record boot last month by Lawson, came against another FSU opponent, Iowa State.

Paul Adams, Tech fullback, ventured: "The Seminoles were probably tougher than those Auburn guys we played last week."

No surprise: UF 34, FSU 8
Gator wishbone led by DuBose

GAINESVILLE, FL - Just say that Florida's football team won about as it was expected to win, and that Jimmy DuBose was considerably the reason why.

Say that Florida State's effort was pretty doggone vigorous - as expected, perhaps as vigorous as it could have been.

On a Saturday afternoon of splendid autumn weather Florida won it 34-8, and the sellout Florida Field crowd of 64,401 found it exciting very early and very late, but maybe not so much in between.

DuBose, a 5-11, 215-pound senior from Sarasota, ripped the Seminoles for 204 yards in 22 carries, and that was more yards than any individual ever gained running on the Seminoles. (Previous high was one night in Tallahassee in '68 when Virginia Tech turned loose Ken Edwards, a converted linebacker, for 197 yards.)

Tell you what, DuBose could have run for more.

"You can't stick an arm out," said UF Coach Doug Dickey, "and expect to tackle him."

Not that Florida State defenders were exactly sticking their arms out. "Our defensive players have nothing to be ashamed of," FSU defensive coordinator Pete Rodriguez phrased it. "They gave a good effort against one of the best offenses in the country. DuBose is the best fullback we've seen."

Florida, now 5-1 and apparently headed for somebody's bowl, has this thing going - something good happens early and the Gators go ahead quickly. It has happened in five of six gamed this year, it happened in this one.

The Seminoles fumbled on the second play from scrimmage. Florida recovered. Two plays were capped by Tony Green scoring from eight yards out, and UF led 7-0.

It stayed that way until the second quarter when Green scampered 32 yards to FSU's 31 with a punt. A half-dozen plays later Jimmy Fisher passed 10 yards to Wes Chandler for another TD and a 14-0 lead.

Fisher took over at quarterback after UF's first series, when starter Don Gaffney went out - never to return - on a hairline fracture of his left wrist. Other Gators went down early - including defensive end Mike Smith. DuBose himself was hurt but came back.

In the third quarter the score jumped to 20-0 on field goals of 51 and 50 yards by David Posey (earlier he missed a 41-yarder). UF then scored early in the fourth quarter on Larry Brinson's 2-yard run - capping a 52-yard drive - and got a late TD on Green's 6-yard burst after DuBose set it up with runs of 27 and 35 yards.

Florida State scored with 4:28 left in the game, a nifty 72-yard movement accomplished almost exclusively on Clyde Walker passes to Mike Shumann (who caught five big ones for 78 yards). Fittingly, the 2-pointer that followed was on a pass - Shumann to Beckman.

Right after, the Seminoles, then down 27-8, stirred the crowd by claiming an onside kick and probing to UF's 10 before downs ran out.

Pretty obviously, that riled the Gators. Dickey promptly sent his first unit back in, turned DuBose loose again, and got a quick touchdown.

"I felt it was time to do it," Dickey said later. "It was a women's intuition … I thought my wife would be mad at me if I didn't."

Statistics, showing UF with a over-all 404 yards and FSU with 378, were a little deceptive. The Seminoles got 242 on the ground, mostly late. Florida, No. 1 nationally in total offense, plundered for 353 running. FSU couldn't control the ball, as it had hoped. Florida managed two more plays, 71 to 69.

In the last 10 seconds, on a 45-yard Walker pass to Jimmy Everett, the Seminoles got to UF's four. But a last-play interception ended that.

Leon Bright, playing much despite a shoulder injury, was the Seminoles' primary ground threat with 62 yards in 13 carries. Fred Miller ran well, getting 52 in just six tries. But the Seminoles' running net was just 136. Walker hit on 16 of 29 passes for 217 yards. UF's Fisher threw nine times, hit three for 51 - meaning, for what it's worth, the Seminoles should retain their No. 1 national rank in pass defense.

Turnovers helped blunt what chance the Seminoles might have had; they lost four fumbles, had two throws stolen. UF had only two turnovers, a fumble plus an interception - but each probably cost the Gators a touchdown.

It was UF's 15th victory in the 18-year history of the series, as well as the Gators' eighth straight triumph over the Seminoles.

"What can you say when you get kicked like we did," said FSU Coach Darrell Mudra. "We had hoped to contain DuBose some, but as you can see we didn't."

Next Saturday the 1-5 Seminoles play Auburn in Tallahassee.

For Florida it will be homecoming here against Duke, and President Ford plans to join the festivities.

Secret Service men, who've been swarming around this city for days, mimght give some thought to keeping him out of the way of Jimmy DuBose.

Auburn 17, Florida State 14

Seminoles nullified 17-14.
Auburn wins.

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Placing Larry Key at fullback for the first time this season, Florida State's team finally got its offense untracked here Saturday night and hogged the football a whopping 75 plays to Auburn's 48.

But Rick Neel's 92-yard kickoff return and a 20-yard field goal by Neil O'Donoghue that soon followed in the third quarter got Auburn out of the trap, 17-14, in a brutal clash of hard-hitters.

In the end, once again, the Seminoles were had by their own mistakes, as much as anything else.

One Florida State touchdown - Leon Bright from the one - was knocked down by an offside penalty in the fading moments of the first half. Another Florida State touchdown - Clyde Walker's 10-yard pass to Mike Shumann - was cancelled by an offensive-interference call against tight end Ed Beckman (away from the play) with 1:25 remaining in the game.

And then when Keith Singletary lined up for a 29-yard try for a field goal with about a half minute left, a chance for a final 17-17 tie went awry. Maybe because the Seminoles had only 10 men on the field, and there was heavy pressure from tackle Steve Stanaland.

Bright's scoring run that was nullified by the offside penalty was followed three plays later by a close call from officials. On fourth down, again at the one, it seemed to many that Bright had scored - but he was ruled six inches short.

"We are very grateful for this victory," said Auburn Coach Shug Jordan. "It seems like somebody up there is taking care of us. We didn't dominate any phase of the game. And we still won."

Moving over from the wingback spot he had manned through the first six games, Key ran 19 times for 70 yards and seemingly provided - well, the key to moving the ball consistently, as the Seminoles did this night time and again. Leon Bright, at his regular running back spot, sliced for 79 yards in 26 tries, almost all in the first half.

Auburn got on the board first, wheeling 55 yards in five plays, Sedrick McIntyre scoring from the one.

The Seminoles tied it 7-7 early in the second quarter, going 79 yards with Bright on 10 successive runs spliced around a couple of offsides against Auburn. The sophomore scored from the four.

On their first turn in the last half, the Seminoles went 65 yards, Walker passing to Shumann for the final 16, and led 14-7. But for only seconds. Neel on the ensuing kickoff tied it 14-14 with his well executed runback behind a covey of blockers.

And it was just a little later that Auburn maneuvered 50 yards for the winning field goal, which came after Florida State defenders had checked Tiger runners following a first down at the four.

Its offense held to 263, Auburn scarcely threatened the few other times it had the ball. Florida State racked 315 yards including 174 passing as Walker, in all the way, hit on 12 of 23.

Mitzi Jackson spurred Auburn's 217 yard running game, getting 79 in just six carries. Big runs by him set the stage for the first touchdown and the field goal.

"Neel's kickoff return was certainly the deciding factor," said Jordan. "Except for that score, we barely had the ball for about 30 minutes from the second quarter until late in the third." … In the second quarter, Auburn had only 10 plays from scrimmage.

The Tigers, now 3-3-1, return home for a game with Florida next Saturday. Florida State, 1-6, goes to Clemson.

"We needed a couple of touchdowns which they didn't give us," commented FSU Coach Darrell Mudra, "We played like hell.

"The officials have to call the game, and they did. But if we had got either one of the scores, it would have put is in the driver's seat.

"The call on Beckman certainly didn't help the play itself. The guy who was watching Beckman certainly wasn't watching Shumann.

"We showed more poise tonight than we have all season. Our defense was outstanding; we were hurting physically, but they gave us some big plays."

"Auburn's kicking game was the difference."

A crowd of 39,344 on a warm, fair night whooped it up all the way. It was the largest Campbell Stadium turnout for a non-Florida game since Georgia came here in '65.

Florida State 43, Clemson 7

From the Tallahassee Democrat, November 2, 1975, page 41, by Bill McGrotha.

FSU goes boom, boom, boom, boom - wins 43-7!

CLEMSON, SC - Latching hungrily onto splendid, somewhat unexpected opportunity here Saturday afternoon, Florida State turned Clemson's football team every way except loose.

The stunning 43-7 score did not tell it like it really was on this sunny, cool day. For befuddled, error-prone Clemson, it was somewhat worse than 43-7.

Like it was nothing, Florida State marched 84, 70 and 80 yards to touchdowns three of the first four times it got the ball. It was 14-0 before these toothless Tigers had managed as many as four plays from scrimmage. And it was 26-7 before Clemson had run as many as 11 plays. Florida State scored in every quarter - including 20 in the first.

"it looks like we may have turned the corner with our team," said FSU Coach Darrell Mudra, who moments later had a second thought" "It's hard to tell how much we've improved because Clemson is struggling. They're not as good as they were earlier in the season."

Amassing 497 yards, with Larry Key in 15 runs getting 105 yards of a 302 total on the ground, the Seminoles extracted six turnovers from the home team as an unbelieving crowd of 33,000 gave its sullen attention.

Clemson lost four fumbles, had two passes swiped. Losing their seventh game in eight starts, the Tigers managed a bare 200 yards, only 66 in the last half. Just 46 yards came passing as four quarterbacks completed a mere four of 13 throws, and heralded freshman Willie Jordan completed none of his three attempts.

Mike Shumann caught passes for two of FSU's first three touchdowns - and those were his only receptions on a day when he might have caught 20, so easily did he get open.

Clyde Walker completed 10 of his 14 throws for 165 yards and three TDs as seven different Seminoles pulled in passes from him and Steve Mathieson.

Florida State touchdowns, in succession:

(1) Walker's 6-yard toss to Shumann, capping an 84-yard push, (2) Leon Bright's 2-yard plunge, climaxing a 70-yard movement, (3) Walker's 16-yard throw to Shumann, ending an 80-yard drive, (4) Key on a 16-yard screen pass from Walker, set up by a kickoff fumble that Jimmy Heggins claimed for the Seminoles at the Clemson 26, (5) a 2-yard smash by Rudy Thomas, finishing off an 80-yard march, (6) Mathieson's 1-yard sneak after a 52-yard trip.

It was 29-7 at halftime as Keith Singletary kicked a 36-yard field goal just before the gun.

Bright, after running for 78 yards on 15 first-half carries, played not at all after intermission, nursing a couple of jammed toes. He figures to be okay soon.

Clemson's touchdown came in the first quarter, briefly cutting the score to 14-7. Ken Callicutt ran it in from the 15. Quarterback Mike O'Cain had set it up with a 44-yard scamper and a 16-yard pass. On that one scoring push, the Tigers got 80 of their 200 yards.

Florida State controlled the ball 88 plays to 57, and out-first-downed the Tigers 29 to 12.

Tackles Greg Johnson and Phil Jones had big games, the latter claiming two Clemson fumbles. Cornerback Bobby Jackson was in the thick of everything - intercepting a couple of passes, forcing a fumble that paved a touchdown, averting a touchdown with a diving tackle on a kickoff return.

The Seminoles were obliged to punt only three times, all late in the game. Two early Florida State touchdowns were erased by penalties - but the Seminoles came right back on each of these series and scored anyhow.

It was, in short, a "laugher," the likes of which Florida State has not seen since Colorado State 37-0 in '72. It was the first game the Seminoles had won in the light of day since '72. And it was the most points racked by a Florida State team since Kansas 44-22 in '72.

The Seminoles substituted early and often. So do Clemson - out of desperation. Several Tigers went down with injuries.

"Early in this game," said Mudra, "we looked like we were aggressive and knew what we were doing. Our defense played its best game of the year.

"Walker showed why he's the starting quarterback."

Kicking off eight times in this game, the Seminoles several times kicked short - by design. They recovered one fumble that way, and came close to getting the ball similarly on a couple of other kickoffs.

Now 2-6 and gunning for 5-6, the Seminoles are home the next two weeks, to Memphis State, then Miami before closing at Houston.

Fast start keys FSU to the easy victory.

CLEMSON, SC - Scoring touchdowns four of the first five times it touched the football, Florida State won as it pleased here Saturday afternoon.

It was 26-7 early in the second quarter. Clemson was never close to being in it.

On a cool, golden afternoon, Florida State has a start at its 16 after a short return of the opening kickoff. A Larry Key run got two. After a pass missed, Key shot through, on a draw play, for 17 to the 35.

Leon Bright runs for nine, six and five led to the Clemson 43. Then Bright swung wide, got 27 to the 16.

Next play saw Clemson with 12 defenders on the field, and the Seminoles got a 6-yard penalty out of it. Bright pounded to the four for a first down. After he got two more, the Seminoles were penalized for rather obvious motion on a play that saw Bright smash into the end zone.

From the seven, Bright dug to the four but lost two on the next play. It came to fourth down, and the Seminoles went for it.

Clyde Walker passed to Mike Shumann for the touchdown. But Keith Singletary's point kick was wide, and it stayed 6-0.

Clemson couldn't move a lick from its 29 after the kickoff and a punt gave the Seminoles the ball again at their 30.

Walker's 17-yard pass to Ed Beckman started the Seminoles on another scoring march. On a double reverse, Key got seven. Bright knocked off 11 more, to Clemson's 36.

On successive runs Key got 15 and 16, down to the five. Bright cracked to the two, then scored. Florida State went for two - got it on Walker's pass to Beckman. That boosted it to 14-0 with six minutes left in the quarter.

The Seminoles followed with a short kick. Clemson retained the ball at its 34.

Promptly, quarterback Willie Jordan fumbled and the Seminoles' Willie Jones recovered at the 37.

Next play, however, Clemson safety Peanut Martin intercepted Walker's too-short bomb at the 11, wiggled up to the 20.

Abruptly quarterback Mike O'Cain got loose on a 44-yard scamper to FSU's 36.

On third down at the 36 O'Cain kept it going with a pass to Joey Walters at the 15. Next play Ken Callicutt broke off the right side and scored. Jordan's point kick narrowed it to 14-7.

Florida State then whipped 80 yards for r touchdown. On third down Bright converted Walker's short pass over the middle into a 61-yard gainer to Clemson's 15.

Rudy Thomas got seven, but Key lost three.

Walker threw to Shumann for an apparent TD but a flag had fallen and illegal procedure cancelled the play. From the 16 Walker went back to Shumann on the other side, for an easy touchdown pass. Singletary's point kick was blocked by Ronnie Smith.

Whereupon, the Seminoles went with another short squib-type kickoff. Bobby Jackson's jarring tackle precipitated a fumble that Jimmy Heggins claimed for the Seminoles at the Clemson 26.

A 9-yard run by Rudy Thomas got a first down at the 16 as the second quarter opened. After another illegal-procedure call, a short pass to Bobby McKinnon got the five yards back.

On a screen pass, Key scrambled down the sidelines for a touchdown. Sharp defensive work by Martin broke up a 2-point pass intended for Bright, leaving it 26-7.

Mostly on the running of Callicutt the Tigers probed from their 20 to FSU's 40, where they faked a punt on fourth down, the snap going to runner Leon Hope, who was stopped short after a 4-yard pickup.

Florida State moved in its second unit, Steve Mathieson quarterbacking. A 20-yard pass to Mike Marshall soon gained Clemson's 39. The running of Rudy Thomas led on to the 22, where passes failed. On fourth down, Singletary's 39-yard bid for a field goal was short.

With 1:12 to go in the half, FSU got the ball back at its 48 on a punt. Key got stopped short on a run but a personal foul call vaulted the Seminoles to Clemson's 34. Back at the 40 after a 5-yard procedure penalty, Walker threw to Beckman at the 24, then ran for the first down at the 19.

After a pass missed, Singletary entered with eight seconds showing on the clock and was true on a 36-yard field goal, making it 29-7.

At this point the Seminoles had amassed an even 350 yards, including 196 running with Key getting 79 on 10 runs, Bright 78 on 15. Walker had hit on seven of 10 passes for 135 yards. Clemson showed only 135 yards, including 110 rushing.

Almost gone on the third-quarter kickoff was Clemson's William Scott. Jackson - last man with a chance - made a diving tackle that got him at FSU's 35 after a 65-yard runback.

Three runs, the last a 6-yard keeper by O'Cain cut out a first down at the 20.

But a missed pass, a 5-yard penalty and Aaron Carter's sacking of O'Cain for a loss of four ended that.

Willie Jordan missed on a 46-yard try for a field goal.

Key, on a draw play, dug from the 21 to the 35. After Thomas got three, Key busted for 10 to the 48. A 16-yard Walker pass to Beckman gained the 34. Jim Everett snared an 8-yard throw and Thomas ran for seven and a first down at the 19.

After a pass to Key got six, Clemson jumped offside, providing FSU with a first down at the eight. Thomas powered to the three, then got one, finally hurdled over the middle for the score. Singletary's point kick brought it to 36-7.

A "fair catch" on another short FSU kickoff got Clemson the ball at its 33.

A pair of short passes reached the 50.

A punt put the Seminoles in a hole at their four. Three plays later, Florida State was obliged to punt for the first time, and Clemson got the ball at FSU's 41.

But a handoff was fumbled and Phil Jones pounced on the ball for the Seminoles at the 44. Nothing came of it. On the first play of the last quarter Bill Duley punted to the 13, and interference on a fair-catch call got Clemson up to the 28.

Soon Fuller fumbled and Phil Jones again came up with a Seminole recovery, at the 27.

Fred Miller dug for eight, and a personal-foul call on the Tigers had the Seminoles at the eight. Two more runs reached the four but Mathieson was tripped for minus-five on third down.

A fourth-down pass was well defensed, broken up.

Clemson struggled to the 22 before punting to FSU's 48.

Three runs reached the Clemson 38. A short pass to Everett got another first down at the 26. Soon Everett snared another Mathieson throw, 19 yards to the six.

Heggins reached the one on three runs. On fourth down, with 5:04 left, Mathieson sneaked over. Singletary got another point for 43-7.

After which both teams sort of wallowed around the rest of the way.

Memphis State 17, Florida State 14

From the Tallahassee Democrat, November 9, 1975, page 45, by Bill McGrotha.

Lights out for Seminoles.
Memphis State wins 17-14.

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Fate, or something, turned the lights out on everybody in Campbell Stadium before the game started.

But Florida State's football team probably turned the lights out on itself with a highly questionable gamble with 6:24 left on the clock.

And honey turned into gall as Memphis State won it 17-14 here Saturday night before 26,041 emotionally drained fans.

The kickoff was delayed more than 40 minutes by power failure that left the whole of the stadium in total darkness.

Having twice come from behind, Florida State led 14-10 and had the ball at the Memphis State 40 with 6:24 left when it came to fourth-and-one. Instead of punting, the Seminoles gambled on making the first down. Quarterback Clyde Walker was just short of his sneak.

Whereupon, the visiting Tigers took over and cut out a winning touchdown in seven plays, freshman quarterback Lloyd Patterson scoring from six yards out.

All night long Memphis defenders, as tough as touted, choked off Florida State's running game, forced the Seminoles to go to the air. Still, what had been a grinding overall defensive battle in the first half turned into an offensively explosive one.

Florida State had opportunity to "put it away" early, and could not. The Seminoles, on their first two offensive series, had starts at the enemy 44 and 47.

But it was Memphis that got on the board first on Bobby Williams' 32-yard field goal near the end of the first quarter. Florida State took the lead at 7-3 on a powerful 6-yard touchdown run by Rudy Thomas shortly before halftime, after getting a start at the Memphis 44 following a poor punt.

From the second-half kickoff, the Tigers went 70 yards in a hurry to a 10-7 lead, Patterson scored from the one after setting it up with a 39-yard run on - if you would believe - a third-and-one quarterback sneak.

When Memphis lost a fumble for the only time in the game, at its 39, Florida State quickly retaliated on Walker's 11-yard pass to Ed Beckman, and the 14-10 lead stood until that stunning 60-yard touchdown march, climaxed with 3:04 remaining.

Shortly before the fateful fourth-and-one gamble, Florida State defenders had staged a magnificent goal-line stand, holding the visitors off after a first down at the three.

Still, Florida State came close to winning it. On the passes of Walker, the Seminoles moved from their 12, with 1:40 to play, to the Memphis 14 with 12 seconds left. In those last 12 playing seconds there were two futile passes as the Seminoles ignored opportunity for a tying 30-yard try for a field goal.

"We should have punted the football," said FSU Coach Darrell Mudra of the earlier controversial decision. "We gave up field position, and gave them good position.

"They are a better defensive team than we have played lately. We couldn't run the ball, and we made too many errors."

Florida State netted just 75 yards running. Top rusher Leon Bright injured a leg in the first half, and didn't play afterwards but he managed just 21 yards on 11 carries.

Florida State errors were assorted, including roughing the punter and interference on a fair-catch punt. Eighty yards in penalties were walked off the Seminoles, 45 on the visitors.

Controlling the ball, 75 plays to 63, Memphis ran up 381 yards, including 285 rushing as Patterson got 108 himself in 20 carries and Terdell Middleton 96 in 22.

Hitting on 15 of 27 passes, Walker got 173 yards. Patterson managed 96 via air on seven strikes in 12 attempts.

The Seminoles' Bill Duley, called upon for seven punts, kept Memphis in a hole much of the night. He averaged 42.4. (One punt, partially blocked, was credited to the team - not Duley.)

It was the fifth straight time Florida State fell to Memphis State, now 6-4 for the season. Hopeful of winning two games in a row for the first time since '72, the slightly favored Seminoles fell to 2-7 with Miami coming to town next Saturday for homecoming.

"We made adjustments at halftime," said Richard Williamson, first-year coach of the Tigers.

Troubled with its punting most of the season, Memphis again ran into difficulty, and got a mere 28.2 average on six boots. One thing and another, Florida State had starts in Memphis territory five times.

"All I know," said Williamson, "is that people were hitting out there and playing hard-nosed football,"

That was so.

UM stings Tribe 24-22.
Late three-pointer blights comeback.

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Relentless pressure by University of Miami's football team took the candy out of Florida State's hungry mouth here Saturday night.

A superior kicking game also made a considerable difference, as it has in so many Seminole losses in this dwindling season.

Miami won it 24-22 on a 29-yard field goal by Chris Dennis with 17 seconds remaining, tainting an inspired Seminole comeback.

Ahead 14-0 early, then 21-6 with a quarter to play, Miami trailed 22-21 with 4:44 left as Clyde Walker came on at quarterback to spark a determined FSU charge.

Miami had set up its third touchdown by blocking a Florida State punt at the Seminole 35. And Miami got itself a last chance by putting more pressure on punter Bill Duley, who managed a mere 17-yarder that gave the Hurricanes a chance from the FSU 42 with 2:11 to go.

A soccer-style booter born in Wales, sophomore Dennis was recruited out of Ohio by Miami after losing Berl Yepremian to Florida. His winning 3-pointer was his 11th in 16 tries this season - setting a school record - but earlier in this game he had missed ones from 38 and 51 yards.

Walker, set down as a starter in favor of Steve Mathieson, entered the game in the second quarter with the Seminoles behind 14-0.

Just before halftime he guided a 56-yard movement, capped by a 1-yard plunge by Rudy Thomas, cutting the score to 14-6.

Early in the third quarter the Seminoles climaxed a 72-yard push with another Thomas run from the one.

With a homecoming crowd of 30,228 hollering for more on this clear, cold night, the Seminoles got a third touchdown on Larry Key's 31-yard run the play after recovery of a Miami fumble.

Following the last two touchdowns, Walker threw passes for two points to Ed Beckman, then Mike Shumann. For the evening, he hit on 14 of 21 passes, accounting for 156 of the Seminoles' 263 yards. Shumann snared six passes for 74 yards.

"We made too many mistakes in the kicking game," said a disappointed Coach Darrel Mudra. "I think we deserved to win. We had it won, and then managed to lose it.

"I have an opinion on that last fumble of theirs, but I want to wait and see the film."

The fumble he spoke of came from the mitts of Miami's Don Martin at FSU's 22 with 1:20 left, and it seemed that the Seminoles' Randy Coffield had recovered - but officials ruled the ball had been blown dead. Three plays, and Miami had its winning field goal.

Miami, now 2-6, with Notre Dame and Florida left, got a first-quarter touchdown on Martin's yard run at the end of a 54-yard movement on the heels of an interception of a Mathieson pass.

Next time the Hurricanes got the ball they whipped 71 yards to a touchdown that freshman Otis Anderson got on a 17-yard pass from Kary Baker. It was Anderson who led a Miami running game that netted 242 of the team's 275 yards, carrying 12 times for 77. Miami threw only a dozen times, completing six for a mere 60 yards.

After blocking that punt late in the third quarter, UM scored on Marry Cain's 2-yard scamper with a pitchout.

Thomas got 78 yards in 21 carries, and Key 77 in 13 but FSU netted only 101 on the ground.

Baker, also benched as a starter in favor of understudy Frank Glover, came in early and was in the saddle for all Miami scoring, personally contributing some key runs along with completing four of six passes.

Now ahead in the all-time series between the two, 10 games to nine, Miami has never lost in Tallahassee, this was its fourth appearance here.

Florida State, which a couple of weeks ago had visions of finishing 5-6 following a 43-7 conquest of Clemson, stands 2-8 with Houston ahead in a closing game next Saturday night in the Astrodome.

Florida State 33, Houston 22

FSU rips Cougars.
33-22 win saves job for Mudra.

HOUSTON, TX - In a football game that might possibly have been the difference in Darrell Mudra's remaining as head coach, Florida State overcame a 10-0 disadvantage and crushed Houston 33-22 here Saturday night.

The Seminoles rose up in gutty aggression in a mistake-plagued battle. Florida State won it despite four lost fumbles and 135 yards in penalties.

Starting quarterback Clyde Walker went out early in the second quarter with a peeled fingernail on his throwing thumb, and Steve Mathieson came in to direct the surprising turnabout.

The Seminoles had planned to throw early and often - even from the shotgun formation. But they found it unnecessary. Trailing 13-10 at intermission, Florida State ran all over the Cougars in the last half.

Larry Key in 22 runs got 108 yards and Rudy Thomas added 78 on 19 turns.

Houston errors - including four lost fumbles - helped more than somewhat.

In the beginning, the Cougars jumped on two Florida State fumbles to go ahead 10-0. Dyral Thomas scored on an 11-yard run after Houston claimed a Seminole bobble at the 12.

A little later Houston got another Florida State fumble at FSU's 40, moved into position for a 32-yard field goal by Leonard Coplin, who kicked a school-record number three on this night.

As a small turnout of 13,240 fans watched in the Astrodome, Florida State started its rally with a 58-yard scoring drive, Key scoring from the six.

Then the Seminoles recovered an onside kick - daring to attempt it after Houston was flagged for a personal foul on the extra point attempt following the TD, with the penalty providing a kickoff from the Cougar 45. Soon Keith Singletary booted a 38-yard field to tie it 10-10.

Houston drove 72 yards in the last moments of the half to lead 13-10 as Coplin booted a field goal from 45 yards out.

The Seminoles moved ahead to stay with a drive from the Houston 48 following a penalty on the second-half kickoff return, Thomas scoring from the two. Houston fumbled the ensuing kickoff, but Florida State got nothing out of it - as a successful 52-yard field goal by Singletary was cancelled for delay of game.

Whereupon, Houston fumbled on its first play from scrimmage, at its 23. Soon Key scored on a run from the five, making it 23-13.

A 28-yard field goal by Coplin narrowed it to 23-16.

Early in the last quarter, FSU got another Houston fumble, at the Cougar 38. Thomas again scored from two yards out. Houston came back to move within 30-22 on a 30-yard David Husman pass to freshman Randy Love.

Then FSU drove 86 yards to a 31-yard Singletary field goal.

"Maybe this is the beginning of next season," said Mudra. "We got about five guys hurt in this game, and their replacements did great jobs. Every time someone went down, somebody else came in and picked us up.

"Mathieson did an excellent job. He's big, strong, and he ran the ball well. I thought our offensive coaches did a good job of adjusting when he came in.

"I thought our defense was tough when it had to be, and I think Willie Jones did a great job of putting pressure on their passer.

"It sure was great for our kids to wind up with a victory after losing so many close ones."

The Seminoles finished 3-8, registered their fourth victory in three seasons, and only their second over Houston in 15 tries.

"We could not stop them when we had to," said Coach Bill Yeoman of his Cougars, now 1-8, "and we could not score enough points."

Florida State ran up 384 yards on offense to Houston's 283. The Seminoles got 251 on the ground, Houston only 132. Florida State was obliged to punt only twice.

Houston did manage more passing yardage (151) on the Seminoles than any other team this season, but the Cougar's throwing was erratic.

FSU opportunistic in 33-22 victory.

HOUSTON, TX - Jumping on Houston fumbles, Florida State closed out its football season here Saturday night with a 33-22 triumph before a tiny Astrodome crowd of 13,240.

Trailing 10-0 after a quarter, Florida State came back behind quarterback Steve Mathieson, who took over early in the second period after starter Clyde Walker peeled a fingernail on his throwing hand.

Houston started well in this one after taking the opening kickoff and beginning at its 20. An offside coupled with Donnie McGraw's 13-yard burst led to the 42. Runs by Bubba McGallion and Dyral Thomas spurred the Cougars on to FSU's 40.

It came to fourth-and-three at the 40, and Houston made the surprising decision to go for the first down. McGraw got it with a 4-yard burst off tackle.

But on third down Greg Johnson sliced through to deck McGallion for a loss of seven back at the 41. This time Houston punted - to the 15.

Rudy Thomas was racked for minus two. Then Larry Key fumbled, and Houston's Paul Humphreys recovered the rolling ball at the 12.

A play later Thomas scored on an 11-yard pop up the middle. It was only the second time Houston has scored in the first quarter this season. Leonard Coplin's PAT kick made it 7-0.

Key brought the kickoff back to the 32.

Florida State soon had Clyde Walker in the shotgun formation, but a pass for six to Ed Beckman was a half-yard short as it came to fourth down.

The Seminoles gambled - and cashed in when Houston jumped offsides.

Runs by Key and Thomas got FSU to Houston's 46, where it came to fourth and one. Another gamble, and Thomas shot to the 42 for a first down.

Next play Thomas fumbled and linebacker Humphreys again recovered, this time at the 40.

A 26-yard McGallion pass to Don Bass gained FSU's 32. A penalty cost Houston five, but Thomas broke for 18 to the 19 on a run. More Houston runs were checked at the 16, and Coplin came on to kick a 32-yard field goal for 10-0.

A clip on the kickoff return set FSU back to its 11 as the first quarter ended. An 18-yard pass to Shumann got FSU out of the hole, up to the 31. Another short pass to Shumann, a Fred Miller run and another Houston offsides lifted FSU to its 45.

Key, on a reverse, passed long to Roger Overby, who dropped the touchdown-labeled bomb at the 12. But Beckman caught a 23-yard Walker shot at the 32.

Walker hurt his hand on the following play, and Steve Mathieson came in. A fumble lost four. On fourth down Keith Singletary tried a 50-yard field goal - right on target but just a little short.

On second down Willie Jones slapped down McGallion for a loss of six. Soon Houston punted to FSU's 42. Once more a Houston offsides helped the Seminoles to a first down, at the Cougar 43. Shumann tucked in a 15-yard Mathieson throw at the 28. A play later Jim Everett snared a 21-yard toss at the six.

Key brushed tacklers aside as he cut wide and scored on a strong effort. Singletary narrowed it to 10-7 with a PAT kick.

A personal-foul penalty against Houston on the point play gave FSU an opportunity to kick off from the Cougar 45 - and prompted a decision for an onside kick.

Singletary's high effort was a beaut that bounced off a Cougar - and freshman Vic Fowler claimed the ball for the Seminoles at the 28.

Key, on two runs, reached the 21, but a pass was off Beckman's fingertips in the end zone. Singletary entered to kick a 38-yard field goal that tied it 10-10.

Houston got little from its 20, soon punted to FSU's 25.

An offensive pass-interference call on Shumann knocked FSU back to its 12. Key got seven, then 10 on runs before Bill Duley punted to the 28.

Thomas popped up the middle on a 26-yard jaunt to FSU's 46. Ken Bridgeon and Bass caught passes for five and 10 yards, to the 31.

With 16 seconds in the half, Coplin on fourth down was true on a 45-yard field goal kick, making it 13-10.

But Houston's onside kick was short, and FSU had a shot from the Cougar 49.

Mathieson rifled a bomb that Shumann, on a dead run, dropped at about the five. Next play Mathieson was sacked on the FSU 43 as time ran out.

At this point, Houston had a yardage margin of 147-138 with 106 on the ground. The Seminoles had 97 passing.

Start of the second half found Coach Darrell Mudra moving from the press box to the sidelines, just like last week against Miami.

Thomas hauled the kickoff back 23 yards to the 37,, and a late-hit penalty vaulted FSU to the Houston 48.

Key got nine in two cracks, and Thomas rammed to the 34, then the 29. Key spun to the 21, and Thomas broke for 13 to the six.

Two plays later Thomas scored from the two, and a Singletary boot gave Florida State the lead 17-13.

Then Delrick Brown fumbled on the kickoff runback, and the Seminoles' Jeff Ridings recovered at the Cougar 29.

But holding cost the Seminoles 15 on the next play. A short pass and a 9-yard Mathieson run regained the 35.

On fourth down a whistle blew as Singletary put through a 52-yard field goal. The Seminoles got penalized five for delay, rubbing out the long one. Duley came in, punted into the end zone.

Promptly Houston's Thomas fumbled. This time Andy Stockton recovered for FSU, at the 23.

Soon Roger Overby snagged a Mathieson pass, 16 to the siz. Thomas got one before Key pounced in from the five for the TD. A Singletary point kick was wide, leaving it 23-13.

The Cougars ushered in 6-2 David Husman at quarterback, and a pass to McGraw got 14 to the home team's 32. But successive 5-yard penalties wiped out a 20-yard pass and slapped the Cougars back to the 27.

But Lee Nelson fumbled a punt, and Houston's McGraw got the ball at FSU's 37. A third-down penalty for a personal foul got the Cougars to the 14. On fourth down Coplin kicked a 28-yard field goal for 23-16. That broke a school record. Never before had a Houston team got three field goals in one game.

A Mathieson run for nine following a kickoff return to the 34 helped lift FSU to its 45 as the quarter ended. Mathieson kept for nine more, and Miller tacked on eight to the Houston 34.

Then they swapped fumbles. Key's bobble was claimed by Houston's Randy Byrne. A play later John Housman lost the ball and the Seminoles' Jon Thames got it back at the 39.

In two runs, Thomas reached the 16. Miller hit the middle for seven. Thomas went wide to the two, then scored on the following play. A Singletary point brought it to 30-16 with 11:22 left.

Passes of 18 and 15 yards to Robert Lavergne and Eddie Foster gained FSU's 45. Willie Jones sacked Husman for minus nine, but a holding penalty soon aided Houston to another first down at FSU's 35.

Two plays later Husman threw down the sidelines to freshman Randy Love, who scored on a 30-yard play. But Coplin missed the point kick,, and it was 30-22.

An illegal block on the kickoff return backed FSU into a hole at its 14. Whereupon Thomas slipped loose for nine and Key for 15 to the 38.

A couple plays later Mathieson kept for seven, and a personal-foul call on Houston got the Seminoles to Houston's 37. Key cracked for six, then 12 to the 19. On fourth down Singletary added a 31-yard field goal, jumping the score to 33-22 with 3:31 to go.

An 18-yard pass to Foster and an interference penalty got Houston to FSU's 44.

Still another pass-interference penalty aided Houston to the 29. After Husman lost 10, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was called on the FSU bench, moving the ball to the 23.

On fourth down, Husman shot a 13-yard pass to Foster at the 12, keeping things going. But not for long. Gary Woolford intercepted Husman's next shot in the end zone, brought it out to the 19.

Wally Woodham moved in at quarterback for the Seminoles, staying on the ground for three plays, then whipped an 18-yard pass to Mike Marshall as time ran out.
