Opening-day feast puts FSU in winner's bracket.
By Steve Ellis
OMAHA, NE - A win. Anything else that happened on Saturday for Florida State was like A1 sauce on an Omaha steak.
Matt Diaz's two home runs added spice. And Chris Chavez's stellar work out of the bullpen left a good taste with every Seminole.
But it was a rare opening-round win that could have stood alone as a feast for FSU fans famished for a College World Series win.
After being eliminated from the CWS in two games last year and in three games in 1996, FSU is in the winner's bracket with a 7-3 win over Texas A&M on Saturday.
"You hear all the jokes about two and barbecue and I'm about tired of that," Diaz said. "So the first one was a big one."
It was just the third time in their last seven trips to the College World Series under Mike Martin that FSU won its opener. The next challenge for FSU is to make it past the third game, something accomplished just twice in Martin's 10 previous appearances in Omaha.
FSU will play either Stanford or Cal State Fullerton on Monday at 3:30 p.m. EDT.
Nobody, not even Diaz, came up bigger for FSU than reliever Chavez. The senior pitched the Seminoles out of a no-out, bases-loaded situation in the fifth inning on just 14 pitches, 11 of which were strikes.
"The ballgame came down to when Chavez came in and took control," Martin said. "Let's not lose sight of what Matt Diaz did, but it's still pitching and defense."
Chavez (7-5) allowed no runs and just one hit in five innings of relief. Texas A&M coach Mark Johnson said Chavez's sidearm motion gave his team fits, especially in the fifth.
"He bulldogged his way through," Johnson said. "The bases loaded was a critical one for us. He has good stuff. Unique stuff. He has a unique delivery we don't see very often."
Second-seeded FSU held a 4-3 lead when starter Nick Stocks was lifted after he walked three consecutive Aggies to open the fifth. Chavez protected the lead and Diaz and Company extended it with two runs in FSU's half of the inning.
"It was a big momentum shift in the game to come in and get three outs without them scoring," said Chavez, fifth nationally with a 2.20 ERA.
Diaz added: "We definitely had a little hop in our step after that, and I knew we wouldn't have to hear (Martin) yell 'dadgummit' so many times."
Chavez did what Stocks could not in quieting a Texas A&M team that had 42 extra-base hits, including 19 home runs, in eight regional and super regional games. The Aggies (52-17) had one home run and just three extra base hits on Saturday but got to Stocks early.
Stocks started to get his pitches up in the third inning and paid for it. Shawn Schumacher sent a Stocks fastball into the right-field bleachers to cut the lead to 4-2. That third-inning shot was the 14th Stocks has given up this season.
"Nick was just not sharp," Martin said. "We can't win a national championship with our starter going four innings."
An error by Marshall McDougall - Dell Lindsey's bouncer slipped under the second baseman's glove - allowed Texas A&M to cut the lead to 4-3 in the fourth inning.
Stocks was pulled after four innings. He threw 80 pitches, and the seven hits he allowed was the most since April 17 against Miami.
A win on Monday would guarantee FSU at least two more games in the CWS and give it two chances to move into the championship game on Saturday.
If the opener is any indication, this College World Series may finally be different for the Seminoles (54-12).
FSU overcame Stock's shaky start by living up to the expectations of the national television audience, which had tuned in for a home run show. FSU hit three home runs on Saturday, bringing its total to 101 for the season, making this team fifth in school history to hit at least 100 in the season.
Diaz led the way with his third and fourth home runs in three games. Diaz, a sophomore, has ripped 13 home runs in 12 NCAA postseason games dating to last season. In addition to a solo shot to open the fifth inning, he put FSU ahead 4-1 in the second on a two-run blast into the right field bleachers.
FSU also picked up a home run from freshman Ryan Barthelemy in the second inning that preceded Diaz' home run.
Another key hit for FSU came in the fifth when Brett Groves added a two-out, RBI single as part of an effort that put FSU ahead 6-4.
FSU didn't chase Aggies starter Casey Fossum (12-7) until the eighth, after he had thrown 144 pitches.
The Seminoles and Aggies wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Fossum walked in a run in the first inning and Texas A&M used three hits, including Lindsey's RBI single, for a 1-1 tie at the top of the second.

Stanford's 10-6 win puts FSU in loser's bracket.
By Steve Ellis
OMAHA, NE - You know the drill.
Get your hopes up after another incredible display by Florida State in the regionals - only to be disappointed at the College World Series.
This time, FSU delayed what always seems to be the inevitable at Rosenblatt Stadium. After beating Texas A&M on Saturday. FSU was sent into the loser's bracket with a disheartening 10-6 loss to Stanford on Monday.
"We're not throwing in the towel," Mike Martin said. "We are too good of a baseball team."
FSU must now defeat Cal State Fullerton, a 4-2 winner over Texas A&M on Monday, to keep alive its chances for a first-ever national title in 17 tries. Zach Diaz will start in the 7:30 p.m. game tonight, but other pitchers, including Mike Smalley, will be available. It will only be Diaz's sixth career start and second this season.
FSU would have started Blair Varnes tonight, but he tore a knee ligament during the pileup after FSU won the super regional against Auburn.
"I don't believe in making excuses for injuries," Martin said. "That is up for us to overcome it. Now if you want to talk about the football team, now I'll make the excuse we had to play with the backup quarterback (in the Fiesta Bowl). Because we would have won the national championship if we had (Chris) Weinke."
In baseball, the Seminoles haven't opened the College World Series with a 2-0 start since 1989.
FSU didn't succumb to history without a fight - twice. The Seminoles, trailing 10-5, loaded the bases in the ninth inning but managed just one run to fall out of the winner's bracket.
Before that flirtation with a history-changing comeback, FSU struck big in the seventh inning. FSU was down 8-1 when it scored four runs. And if not for a controversial call by second base umpire Ken Couch, the damage could have been more.
Second-seeded FSU (54-13) opened the inning with a single and walk when John Halliday hit a potential double-play grounder to Stanford shortstop Eric Bruntlett. Bruntlett dropped the baseball and then tossed it to second. A replay showed Brett Groves, on first base, had easily beaten the throw. Couch, who has done a number of FSU's Atlantic Coast Conference games this season, called him out.
Martin would only comment: "I ain't touching it, Ladies and Gentlemen."
From there, FSU scored on Marshall McDougall's single and a balk by Cardinal starter Justin Wayne to cut the Stanford's lead to 8-3. Then McDougall, a potential hero with three hits, made a base-running blunder. McDougall was on second and John-Ford Griffin on third when Matt Diaz hit a grounder to shortstop. McDougall took off and was thrown out easily at third. That made it two outs and FSU managed just one more run before the rally was ended with FSU still trailing 8-5.
"Nobody gave up," McDougall said.
FSU stranded nine runners over four innings, including the seventh and ninth.
"Am I pleased with the way we fought?" Martin said. "Certainly, we fought back and had the tying run at the plate in the seventh, but that is something that is expected at Florida State."
Stanford added a run in the eighth anf ninth innings and the Cardinal bullpen finished the job Wayne (10-1) could not.
"I was very pleased that after they got those four runs, we scored ones in the bottom of that inning and the next," Stanford coach Mark Marquess said. "The difference today was our clutch hitting."
The Seminoles now find themselves in a very familiar spot - facing elimination in the third game. FSU has been eliminated in three games in four of its last five appearances.
For FSU, all the disappointments of previous College World Series were awakened with one swing of the bat. Designated hitter Craig Thompson ripped a bases-clearing double in the second inning that put FSU in a 4-1 hole.
"He did a great job on an 0-1 count and did a very good job of staying closed and hitting a change-up," Martin said.
Thompson's three-run double sailed over the first base bag, just an inch or so fair. Starter Jon McDonald and the Seminoles were in trouble.
"I had to get the ball down and I wasn't," McDonald said. "I was getting the ball up and out over the plate."
The sophomore, working out of a lower delivery motion, threw 36 pitches in the second inning and still had a few more in him that were to Stanford's liking. The Cardinal opened with two hits in the third inning. Josh Hochgesang brought in one run on a sacrifice fly before McDonald's wild pitch scored Joe Borehard to put Stanford ahead 6-1. Stanford added another run in the fourth inning and another in the fifth on John Gall's home run.
The seven-run deficit was bigger than any FSU had overcome this season, and too much on Monday. By the time McDonald was yanked after 4 1/3 innings, he had given up eight runs on eight hits while striking out five.
"It's very disappointing, mysterious," Martin said. "But we must understand now that if we can win (tonight) those two young men have a very good chance of showing what they are about. If we win, we'll play Thursday night with Stocks against Stanford and then see where Jon is for Friday (if FSU makes it to Thursday and wins)."

Diaz, McDougall provide back-to-back home runs.
OMAHA, NE - Chris Chavez woke up Wednesday morning with a headache and nausea. Brett Groves complained of a sore hamstring.
But neither could have felt better than they did on Wednesday night. The same goes for a Florida State team that usually departs its third game in the College World Series feeling downright lousy.
The Seminoles have never before won Game 3 in the College World Series after starting 1-1. That was 0-7 before Wednesday night. Now for the first time in seven CWS trips since 1989, FSU will leave Omaha with at least two wins.
Chavez, Groves and back-to-back home runs provided by Matt Diaz and Marshall McDougall saw to that.
FSU played up to its No. 2 seed with a 7-2 win over Cal State Fullerton to remain alive in its quest for the elusive national championship.
That's enough to cure a headache.
"Last night I went to the casino before curfew and I was doing pretty good (at the tables) and forgot to eat," Chavez said. "I guess that's the only thing I can think that didn't make me feel good. I woke up and was kind of worried that I wouldn't be able to pitch. I felt better about 1:30 or 2 p.m."
Mike Martin's team must beat Stanford twice to reach the third championship game in school history.
Ace Nick Stocks (12-2) will pitch for FSU tonight at 8:30 p.m. (EDT) in a repeat of Monday's winners' bracket game which Stanford won 10-6.
Too bad FSU can't just continue to use Chavez. After limiting Texas A&M to no runs on one hit in relief on Saturday. Chavez (8-5) came back three days later to throw a complete game. He limited Cal State Fullerton to two runs on seven hits while striking out six. He threw 122 pitches.
It was just Chavez's third start this season. He had given up seven runs on nine hits in 12 2/3 innings in his previous two starts.
"Florida State did a fantastic job," Cal State Fullerton coach George Horton said. "Chris Chavez had a lot to do with our frustration. I didn't see that he wasn't feeling good.
"He's a bulldog pitcher, and they played great defense behind him like they always do. Chris is very hot and pitched very well for them in the first game. I knew we were in for a tough go, and he throws from a lot of angles."
Groves provided Chavez some important early offense after the Titans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Groves, hitting just .167 (2 for 12) in his previous four games, ripped a two-run single in the second inning to give FSU a lead it never relinquished.
Then came the McDougall-and-Diaz Show. Diaz wondered on the eve of the CWS opener last week when he and McDougall would finally get hot in the same game. In the third inning, FSU's leading home run hitters sizzled.
For the third time this season, the two hit back-to-back home runs. They accomplished the feat also against Georgia Tech and Miami.
First came McDougall and his powerful shot over the left-centerfield wall to put FSU up 3-1. Next was Diaz. His home run would be his third this CWS and fifth in his last five games after hitting just two in the 21 games before he got hot.
It was also the sophomore's 14th home run in 14 NCAA postseason games.
Diaz is now tied for second in most career home runs in CWS history with four.
Two batters later, Cal State Fullerton starter Jon Smith (7-1) was gone after giving up four runs on seven hits while striking out just one.
McDougall would make his own history in the fourth inning. He followed John-Ford Griffin's pinch-hit, RBI double with a walk. When he scored on Kevin Cash's single to make it 6-1, McDougall had become just the fifth Division I player to score 100 runs, have 100 hits and 100 RBIs in a single season in NCAA history. J.D. Drew also did it in his career.
Cal State Fullerton will leave the College World Series with just one win for the first time in 10 all-time appearances. The Titans have gone 0-2 three times and have won at least two or more games six times in the CWS.
The Seminoles (55-13) have been booted in three games from the CWS in four of their past five appearances. And it was a California team that eliminated FSU from the CWS in four of those five appearances.
Cal State Fullerton sent FSU packing in 1992 and 1994. Long Beach State did it last year and Southern California eliminated FSU in 1995. Stanford will try to do it tonight with freshman right-hander Brian Sager (6-0, 3.98 ERA) on the mound. He will be making his first appearance since May 30.
"We know we've got an uphill battle but we are also excited," coach Mike Martin said. "It's like the Bee Gees - just staying alive.
"Dadgum, I haven't been here in a long time. We're in the Thursday and Friday stuff now."

The Seminoles rally for six runs in Thursday's games to force another game today against Stanford.
By Steve Ellis
OMAHA, NE - Florida State was where it wanted to be under the circumstances.
In a must-win situation, the Seminoles had their ace on the mound and a snarl on their faces. But another disappointing effort by Nick Stocks in the College World Series turned FSU's furrowed brow into a more familiar frown.
Then smiles broke out like FSU bats in the late innings on Thursday night. FSU combined to score six runs in the sixth and seventh innings to rally past Stanford 8-6 and see another day in the College World Series.
"We played well tonight, but there is a lot of baseball left," FSU coach Mike Martin said.
"We are hanging in there," Martin said.
If FSU defeats Stanford today at 3:30 p.m. (EDT) on ESPN2, it plays in its first CWS championship since 1986 - against arch-rival Miami.
And for the first time since 1986, FSU has won three games in the College World Series. Jon McDonald (9-2) is scheduled to start for the Seminoles today.
FSU is 3-1 in this CWS, mostly because of its relief pitching and clutch hitting from its power hitters, especially Marshall McDougall and Matt Diaz.
Diaz's older brother, Zach, also played hero on Thursday night when he limited Stanford (50-14) to one hit in 4 ½ innings. The senior was charged with no runs, and allowed just one walk in his biggest appearance as a Seminole.
The Seminoles (56-13) used an RBI double by McDougall and a towering two-run home run by junior-college transfer Sam Scott to overcome a 6-2 deficit in the sixth inning and tie the game.
The shortstop Brett Groves opened the seventh inning with a double. Ryan Barthelemy reached on an error by Stanford reliever Dan Rich, who bobbled a dribbler down the first-base line. With Groves on third and Barthelemy on first, Karl Jernigan hit into a double play, but that scored Groves with the go-ahead run.
FSU was not done. Diaz hit a one-run double off the center-field wall to put FSU ahead 8-6.
Stocks was out of the game by the time FSU woke up at the plate. He gave up six runs on eight hits in just 4 2/3 innings. It was an effort hauntingly similar to Saturday when Stocks, a first-round "sandwich" pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in the recent Major League Baseball draft, allowed three runs on seven hits in just four innings.
As it did Saturday, FSU responded to Stocks' effort with a stellar effort from the bullpen and pop from the top of its order.
FSU had its opportunities early but continued a trend that almost proved to be season-ending. The Seminoles stranded nine runners in the first five innings - and 16 in the game, one shy of a CWS record - but were still able to chip away at Stanford's 3-0 lead.
Even when it scored two runs on fielder's choices by Barthelemy and John-Ford Griffin in the fourth, FSU stranded two runners as Matt Diaz lined out to left field.
Stanford had its missed chances too but struck first when another controversial call played a part in an FSU-Stanford game. On Monday, television replay showed an incorrect call was made at second base during FSU's four-run seventh inning. The call resulted in FSU's first out.
"The last time we played them, we got a lot of clutch hits. It was a turn-around tonight," Stanford coach Mark Marquess said. "They were the ones that got those clutch hits tonight. We had a couple of chances, and (Zach) Diaz did a great job stopping us."

FSU's reward: Miami.
After an exhausting 14-11 win over Stanford, FSU will play Miami for the championship today.
By Steve Ellis
OMAHA, NE - Coach Mike Martin called it another "ho-hum day at the yard."
He was kidding. And giggling and cheering and dancing and doing all the wonderful things he rarely gets to do on the day before the national-championship game.
The Florida State baseball team, for just the third time in 17 trips to Omaha, will play today for the elusive national title. Rested arch-rival Miami awaits an FSU team both exhilarated and exhausted by a 4 ½-hour, 13-inning roller-coaster ride that certainly will go down as a College World Series epic.
"This is a baseball game that will be talked about for a long time in this city," Martin said. "It was a tremendous day for us."
Center fielder Karl Jernigan, just 1 for 6 in the CWS when he stepped up to the plate in the 13th inning, ripped a three-run home run to send Stanford packing with a 14-11 loss.
"I was just doing my job," Jernigan said in an understatement.
For the first time since going to a new bracket format in 1988, the College World Series will have the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds facing each other in the title game. Martin has no idea who he will start on the mound, but his choices are limited to freshman Chris Whidden and Chris Smith or seldom-used sophomore Mike Smalley.
FSU ran out of pitching on Friday. But it didn't run out of heart - and certainly not home runs.
The second-seeded Seminoles crushed sic of them against Stanford on Friday. None was more important in FSU's 52nd year of baseball and in Martin's 20 years as head coach than the one Jernigan sent into the left-field bleachers in the 13th inning.
He tore into a 1-0 fastball and sent his teammates into a wild celebration at home plate unlike any FSU had ever held in Rosenblatt Stadium. It came after freshman Bobby Spano walked and freshman Ryan Barthelemy singled, giving the Seminoles runners on first and third with none out.
"When you see the freshmen step up, it's so exciting," Martin said. "Spano had such a great at-bat in the 21st inning or whatever it was. Barthelemy gets on base, and then K.J. (hits it out)."
With Jernigan's home run, Martin flashed back to his youth. He rolled in the grass, did a dance and led FSU fans of mostly players' families in the 'Nole cheer.
"You might have seen an "N" or an "O," but you didn't see the whole thing," Martin said.
Martin would like to finish that cheer today.
The Seminoles join the 1970 and 1986 teams in making it to the title game - which FSU has never won.
They did it with power.
"They came up with some huge swings, and they didn't do it just once," Stanford coach Mark Marquess said. "This was a classic game. There were so many ups and downs."
FSU squandered a 7-2 lead in the seventh and then had to come back three times after Stanford either led it tied it late in the game.
FSU almost needed as many home runs as it did pitchers. The Seminoles tied a CWS record by using seven pitchers in one game. And seven was the lucky number for FSU as Nick Stocks (13-2), who has struggled as a starter in Omaha, shut down Stanford in the 12th and 13th innings and got the win.
"I'll do whatever it takes," Stocks said. "We had no more pitching left. I had to beg him a couple of times (to let him in the game)."
Stocks' effort - two hits and no runs in two innings - set up Jernigan's heroics.
Before that, there were plenty of home runs and heroics for both sides. After Stanford took a 9-7 lead with seven runs in the seventh, Kevin Cash sent the game into extra innings with a two-run homer with none out in the bottom of the ninth to make it 9-9.
"This game was all about who wanted to out-clutch who," Cash said.
But after Cash's home run came more trouble for FSU. Stanford broke the tie on Josh Hochgesang's RBI single in the 10th off Chris Chevez, who is a big reason FSU made it this far. Then Mike Smalley, in for Chavez, gave up an RBI single to Damien Alvarado to put Stanford up by two in the 10th.
Even then, down 11-9, FSU was not done. Maybe it would have been that way for previous FSU teams. Not this one.
"We showed a lot of fight," Martin said.
Marshall McDougall crushed his second home run of the game and 28th of the season to bring FSU within one. The solo shot tied J.D. Drew for most total bases in a CWS game with 12. It secured his place as the nation's RBI and hits leader - and in Seminole lore.
Two batters later, Sam Scott hit a solo shot that tied the game again. Neither team scored in the 11th or 12th.
Then came Jernigan's home run.
The Seminoles had been on the verge of being a victim to all the bad stuff that sooner or later haunts them in the College World Series.
This time, they almost were done in by a bad decision.
Martin left reliever Mike DiBlasi in the game three batters too long, and FSU nearly left Rosenblatt Stadium broken hearted.
The Cardinal scored seven runs in the seventh inning. Six were charged to DiBlasi, who replaced starter Jon McDonald with a 7-2 lead.
After McDonald walked the first batter, DiBlasi walked the next two to load the bases.
DiBlasi remained in the game, and John Gall sent a 1-1 pitch one seat into the left-field bleachers after it apparently grazed the glove of Chris Smith at the wall as he struggled with a fan to grab it. FSU 7, Stanford 6.
"He's pitched great for us all year," Martin said of DiBlasi. "Who would think he would get bombed. He got bombed."
And still DiBlasi remained.
A strikeout and a walk later, Nick Day followed with a triple off the center-field wall that Karl Jernigan appeared to have a chance to grab. Instead, Stanford had tied the game.
DiBlasi, who had given up just two home runs all season, wasn't done. Neither was Stanford and Edmund Muth, who launched a two-run home run over the right-field wall to make it 9-7, Stanford.
Finally, it was over for DiBlasi. But not for FSU. The Seminoles went three-up, three-down in the seventh and eighth innings.
But Stanford starter Jason Young could not finish what he stared an arm-tiring 167 pitches earlier. Cash saw to that.
Since losing to Stanford on Monday and dropping to 1-1, FSU has outhit opponents 46-32 and outscored them 28-19 in three straight wins. FSU hit 26 extra-base hits including nine home runs during that stretch.
"We haven't had an offensive Florida State team like that out here ever," Martin said.
FSU also picked up two solid starts during a three-game winning streak, including McDonald's effort on Friday after he fell to Stanford on Monday.

Miami ends FSU's emotional run through the College World Series with a 6-5 win.
By Steve Ellis
OMAHA, NE - Florida State finally ran out of heroes. It may be another day before the Seminoles run dry of tears.
One of college baseball's premier rivalries came down to one run, just as it did four times during the regular season and just as it should in a game to decide the national championship.
FSU fell 6-5 to Miami on Saturday to cap a memorable and emotional College World Series for the Seminoles.
"I'm going to cry sometime during the day, and then I'm going to church (on Sunday) and play golf," said coach Mike Martin, who is now 14-22 in the CWS.
Matt Diaz had already let the tears fall as he watched Miami celebrate its first national title since 1985 near the pitcher's mound.
"Second place is first loser, and I feel that way right now," Diaz said. "It stings."
FSU, which lost to Miami despite the valiant effort of gimpy-legged Blair Varnes, leaves the College World Series without a title for the 17th time. The Seminoles hardly go home empty handed.
They departed Omaha with their best effort in the CWS since finishing second in 1986, and with much more. After falling to 1-1 in the CWS, staring eyeball-to-eyeball at elimination, this team earned new fans. The Seminoles also put a new face on their CWS tradition of underachieving.
On this trip, FSU overcame injuries and deficits with the youthful exuberance of Varnes and the steady nerves of College World Series MVP Marshall McDougall.
"I call them winners," pitching coach Jamey Shouppe said of the entire FSU team.
FSU, in just their third title game, came as close to finally winning it all as it ever has. It lost the title in 1970 by one run, 2-1 in 15 innings against Southern California.
"We went out fighting, and that's all anybody can ask for," catcher Jeremiah Klosterman said.
Martin said, "What a great week we had in Omaha, We will leave with our heads high."
Miami, on the strength of two huge hits by Kevin Brown, can do FSU one better - it can hold the 1999 national-championship trophy high. It also took the monkey off the back of coach Jim Morris, who had not won the title in five consecutive trips in Omaha leading up to this season.
Brown accounted for four of Miami's six runs on a double and a home run.
FSU could not match Miami here for hero, although McDougall gave it a try in the eighth inning. His team trailing 6-5, McDougall dug into a Michael Neu fastball and launched it to left field.
"I kept saying 'Oh no, oh no,'" Neu said. "Then all of a sudden the wind came our way, and it held the ball in the park."
"There's no doubt in my mind we were going to win," Martin said moments after the game. "Kevin Brown kind of did a number on us today. That was a turning point of the game, but I didn't give up then, no sir.
"I never had a ballclub like this. It was a tremendous effort on our part."
No effort was more impressive than Varnes'. He winced his way through the Miami lineup and gave up six runs on eight hits.
"Was that gutsy?" Martin said. "Is that what it's all about? That's typical of our baseball team all year."
Varnes, a heartbroken observer for most of the series because of a torn knee ligament, was the surprise starter against Miami. He mastered the Hurricanes with the exception of Brown and really two pitches. Yet he left the game with FSU trailing 6-4 after six innings.
The freshman quietly pitched in practice this week, including a good workout on Wednesday. Varnes' mobility had improved since he injured his knee in celebration pileup after FSU beat Auburn in the super regional.
Team physician Steve Jordan determined that Varnes could not do further damage to his knee. So with one look, the decision was made to start Varnes.
"I hadn't pressed him to throw," Shouppe said. "I didn't think it was a possibility.
"I turned around to him, and he smiled and said, 'I hope you are going to ask me what I think you are.'"
The question was "Can you pitch?" and the answer was yes.
Unlike the slugfest between Stanford and FSU game the day before, several pitches determined the national championship. None was bigger than a 2-2 pitch to Brown in the fifth inning.
The teams were locked in a pitchers' duel when Varnes threw a fastball on the corner to Brown. With the bases loaded and two outs, the Miami first baseman found the gap between right and center field for a bases-clearing double that put Miami ahead 6-2. It followed yet another controversial call.
On the pitch before, with the count 1-2, Brown apparently swung at Varnes' pitch. The first-base umpire, on the appeal, ruled it a check-swing.
"I thought he swung," Martin said.
On Brown's second chance, he changed the game.
FSU added two runs in the sixth and one more with the help of Ryan Barthelemy's triple on the eighth.
FSU struck first in the second inning when Griffin singled to right field to drive in Brett Groves, who scored when catcher Greg Lovelady could not handle a one-hop throw from Manny Cre4spo. Brown hit a home run to tie the game 1-1 in the second before FSU countered with a home run by Sam Scott, who put FSU ahead with yet another clutch hit.
But not for long. FSU, again went home without a title.
"I know how they feel," Morris said, "because I've been there."
