Florida State gets the luck of the Drew.
Freshman J.D. Drew homers in the ninth to lift FSU past Oklahoma.
By Steve Ellis
OMAHA, NE - Leave it to a rookie.
In the College World Series where experience is everything, freshman J.D. Drew crunched a two-run, ninth-inning homer to lift Florida State to a 3-2 victory over defending national champion Oklahoma on Friday.
"We've never won a game like that in the College World Series," said FSU coach Mike Martin, in his 10th appearance her as a player and coach. "We've never even won a game late."
Until Drew took Oklahoma left-hander Mark Redman's fastball over the left field wall, All-American pitchers and first-round draft choices Redman and Jonathan Johnson, waged a tremendous pitching duel.
Drew's homer made the Sooners (42-15) losers for the first time in their past 13 NCAA postseason games. Redman (15-3) had won six of those games.
Drew's heroics salvaged winning pitcher Johnson's six-hit effort and puts the No. 2 seed Seminoles (54-14) into the winner's bracket. FSU faces the Miami Hurricanes on Sunday at 2:36 p.m.
Earlier in the season, Drew was benched during some games against left-handed pitching. But on Friday, he had three hits and three RBIs before 13,000 fans at Rosenblatt Stadium.
"(Martin) told me right before: 'Go out there and win this thing.'" Drew said. "I didn't want to hit into a double play. I was looking fastball and trying to hit it to the left.
"It was by far my biggest at-bat. I was stunned."
So was Redman.
"I went outside and just hung the pitch," Redman said. "It was great hitting on his part and I made my one mistake of the game."
Until Drew's big hit, his 14th homer of the season, two pitches by Johnson had seemed destined to put FSU into the loser's bracket of the College World Series again. Now the Seminoles (52-14) have a chance to win two straight in the College World Series for the first time since 1989.
Ryan Minor hit a game-tying homer in the fourth inning and then Brian Shackelford's blast put Oklahoma ahead 2-1 in the eighth inning. Both pitches by Johnson (12-3) were low curve balls and were well thrown, according to Martin.
"J.J. never lost his composure and pitched an outstanding game," Martin said. "He did an excellent job of keeping them off balance.
"It would have been very difficult for us to live with a loss after the way J.J. pitched."
FSU first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz claimed the Seminoles of a season ago would have folded in a similar spot.
But after stranding seven runners, including two in the eighth, FSU rebounded on Scott Zech's walk and Drew's homer.
FSU first squandered opportunity came in the second inning when the Seminoles loaded the bases with two outs. Redman walked in Drew for FSU's first run before striking out Brooks Badeaux and Mickey Lopez.
Mientkiewicz had a chance to score in the eighth inning when Oklahoma outfielders lost Jeremy Morris' double in the sun. But Mientkiewicz, who was on first, was not given the green light to head home.

FSU blown into losers' bracket.
Florida State loses to Miami to fall into a familiar spot at the College World Series.
By Steve Ellis
OMAHA, NE - Florida State nemesis Danny Buxbaum and pitcher J.D. Arteaga combined Sunday to drop the second-seeded Seminoles into familiar territory at the College World Series.
The Seminoles, defeated 4-2 by No. 3 seed Miami before 12,000 at Rosenblatt Stadium, are once again in the losers' bracket by the third game.
"Obviously, it's a tough loss, but it's not the end of the world," FSU coach Mike Martin said. "It's going to be difficult from here, but it's not impossible."
FSU, 1-1 this trip, has made it to a fourth game just four times in 13 CWS appearances. Tuesday at 3:36 p.m., the Seminoles (53-15) face Southern Cal, which eliminated Oklahoma on Sunday night. Jonathan Johnson probably will start for FSU.
The Seminoles must win three more games to play in the championship game Saturday. They would have to beat Miami twice.
Starting pitcher David Yocum (12-3), who said a sore back could not be blamed for his shortest outing at FSU, gave up four runs on five hits in 1/3 of an inning.
Last year, he gave up a grand slam against Georgia Tech in his only College World Series appearance.
Despite stellar defense - the Seminoles turned a CWS-record five double plays - FSU is one game from elimination.
That's mostly because Arteaga, after failing to earn a decision against FSU in two excellent appearances this season, survived an 1 1/2 -hour rain delay and two Seminole rallies.
Of Arteaga's 99 pitches, 74 were for strikes. Although FSU hit well off Arteaga (11-2), especially in the eighth inning, the left-hander allowed no walks and seven hits in the complete game.
After taking four of six against Miami during the regular season, and winning eight straight overall during the postseason, FSU once again ran into Buxbaum.
"We really get pumped up for games against Florida State," Buxbaum said.
No kidding.
The Miami first baseman homered off Yocum for the third time this season. Buxbaum's fourthhomer, and 10th hit in 28 at-bats against FSU this season, stayed about two feet fair down the left-field line.
The three-run homer on Yocum's 2-1 breaking ball put Miami ahead 3-0. The Hurricanes scored a run on Michael Torti's sacrifice fly.
"I went out there feeling all right," Yocum said. "I made one mistake to Buxbaum, but that was our only mistake all day. We had some tough breaks, but Buxbaum had been doing that to us all year."
As they did against Southern Cal on Friday, the Hurricanes had five hits in the first inning, which was enough to chase Yocum.
"They cotton-pickin' get five hits in the first inning and that's the difference," Martin said. "You've got to really credit Arteaga."
From there, Charlie Cruz held Miami scoreless on seven hits in 8 2/3 innings as the Seminoles came through defensively. Their five double plays, also a school record, broke the mark of four set by Southern Cal in a 12-inning game during the 1949 College World Series.

FSU's Series of disappointment.
A late rally falls short as Southern Cal racks up a 16-11 victory and sends the Seminoles home
early from another College World Series.
By Steve Ellis
OMAHA, NE - Florida State, despite the inspiring hitting of Doug Mientkiewicz and J.D. Drew, departed the College World Series Tuesday in familiar fashion:
Ringless.
The No. 2 seed Seminoles, abandoned by their usually strong pitching, lost a 16-11 slugfest to Southern Cal and were sent packing in the double-elimination tournament.
"We haven't been humiliated like that all year," FSU coach Mike Martin said. "(But) they had a chance to throw in the towel out there but just kept fighting. We gave them a battle."
A 14-2 deficit dug by four FSU pitchers in four innings was too much to overcome. Not even the five-home run combination of Mientkiewicz and Drew, or Phil Olson's two-hit pitching in the final 3 2/3 innings could counter the 17-hit barrage of Southern Cal.
As a result, FSU extended to 14 its dubious record of making the most CWS appearances without winning a national title. The Seminoles (53-16) finished fifth for the sixth time, the most in CWS history.
FSU, 1-2 in this year's series, failed to make a fourth CWS game for the ninth time. The Seminoles have been eliminated in three or fewer games in their past four appearances.
Martin gambled on starting Scooby Morgan (4-3) instead of ace Jonathan Johnson, a move defended by his players. But it wasn't just Morgan and FSU that felt the sting of USC's hitting this series. The Trojans have 45 hits in three games.
"We felt we had a better matchup with Scooby against their (left-handed hitters) than me with three days rest," Johnson said. "I never thought it would happen, that 11 runs would not be enough for us to win."
The Trojans' 15 runs were the most allowed by FSU since 1984 when Alabama scored 16. The 17 hits tied the most given up by FSU this season.
For a second straight game, FSU's starting pitcher made an early departure after struggling in the first inning. David Yocum was shelled by Miami on Sunday.
Morgan gave up two hits and a walk to help Southern Cal to a 2-2 tie with no outs in the first.
"I felt fine before the game," Morgan said. "I just didn't have it."
Morgan's replacement, Chuck Howell, didn't have it either. He allowed the Trojans to take a 6-2 lead after one inning.
Freshman Randy Choate experienced an equally harroeing appearance, giving up four runs in the fourth inning.
In just one game, FSU's five pitchers allowed 16 earned runs, just 22 less than given up in 190 previous innings by the five pitchers.
Southern Cal scored in every inning through the seventh, building a 16-5 lead after five innings.
"We had all the confidence in the world we would come back," Olson said. "We fought all the way. We can't leave here with our heads hanging down the way we fought back."
In addition to poor pitching, FSU contribute to its downfall in other ways. Right fielder Randy Hodges, who committed just three errors all season, made two against Southern Cal. The Trojans scored one run when FSU failed to call timeout.
No one could blame FSU's offense, despite stranding 10 runners. The 11 runs were the most ever by FSU in the College World Series.
Drew and Mientkiewicz combined for seven of FSU's 17 hits and produced all 11 of the Seminoles' RBIs.
Mientkiewicz's two homers put him seventh on the all-time FSU list with 35.
The freshman Drew, who replaced Morris at cleanup, set the series record with three homers on Tuesday and had four in three games.
"His performance was spectacular," Southern Cal coach Mike Gillespie said. "He's a premiere young player with a tremendous future."
Because of that duo, Southern Cal was left crossing its fingers as Hodges launched a shot to the warning track with two on during the ninth. It was caught and FSU's last attempt for the greatest comeback in CWS history failed.
Southern Cal starter Brian Cooper limited FSU to two hits in four innings before FSU rallied but fell short.
"It was a hitter's day," Gillespie said.
