Aceless plan works for FSU.
Seminoles stop Tar Heels 4-2 in Series opener.
OMAHA, NE - Here's to FSU head coach Mike Martin's contention that he doesn't have an ace.
The Florida State pitching staff's version of Avis, Gar Finnvold, tried a little harder Friday, and he helped the Seminoles beat North Carolina 4-2 in the opening game of the College Baseball World Series.
FSU's plan now sends Clyde Keller (12-0) against free-swinging Wichita State on Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. EDT. Top-seeded FSU, 53-16, has won 11 in a row.
Martin's decision to use Finnvold (10-3) instead of Keller in the Series' opening round might have been construed as a gamble, but it was part of the strategy Martin and pitching coach Mike McLeod devised during a pre-CWS meeting.
"I was assuming we were going with Clyde until about two days ago," McLeod said, "'til Coach woke up with one of those visions he has."
Martin's hunches have ranged from the interesting to the bizarre. But in using Finnvold against a Tar Heel team similar to FSU in taking lots of pitches, and working pitchers over, Martin had a guy who gets better as he throws more.
"It made sense," McLeod said. "After 10 minutes, I agreed."
After getting out of a first-inning jam by allowing only one run, Finnvold settled down and struck out five and walked only two in 7 1/3 innings, retiring 10 consecutive batters during one stretch.
He ran into a wall in the eighth, giving up a single, a walk and a sacrifice bunt with FSU up 4-1. In came Ricky Kimball, who overcame a walk, a sacrifice fly and a hit batter to retire the Tar Heels' power man, catcher Jesse Levis, on a fly out to left with the bases loaded.
"I couldn't have asked for a better situation than having Jesse Levis at the plate," said Tar Heel coach Mike Roberts. Levis leads the team with a .351 average and had six homers coming in.
"My slider was working real well," said Finnvold, the only FSU pitcher to stay in the rotation all year. "Earlier, toward the end of the season, I struggled with it a little bit, so it's been good to have it back," Finnvold lost two decisions in a row before strong starts against Southern Mississippi in the Metro championship (no decision) and a win in the Atlantic Regional.
FSU got yet another tidbit of power from designated hitter Buddy Cribb. He continued a barrage with his 12th homer of the year, a solo shot over the 343-foot mark in left-center that tied it, 1-1, in the second. Rosenblatt Stadium, the home of the Kansas City Royals' Class AAA team, has rarely been known as a hitter's ballpark, and FSU isn't known for its power.
"It was a crazy thing it happened early, but a key was Cribb's homer," Martin said. "That got our feet on the ground."
Said Cribb: "I heard you can't get any out of here, so when I hit it, I started running because I didn't know how far it was going to go."
The homer was one of only six hits off Tar Heel starter John Thoden (12-1), but allowed FSU to gather momentum, scoring two in the third on Bob Reboin's single and a double play. They added another run in the seventh when Rob Bargas doubled, moved to third on a Chris Brock bunt and then scored after catcher Levis hit him in the back with a wild pickoff-attempt.
Finnvold looked as if he were going all the way until he struggled in the eighth. And when Kimball struggled, that 4-1 lead looked very weak.
"It's been a while since I'd thrown in a game, about a week," Kimball said. "The background (behind the plate) in Omaha is different from any I've seen. It doesn't give you very good perspective, and it obviously showed."
After Kimball retired Levis, he retired the side in the ninth, converting on his ninth save opportunity without failing once.
"We're right where we want to be," Martin said, "with Keller going against the winner of (the second game)."

Seminoles stop Shockers.
Keller pitches FSU to 4-2 win.
OMAHA, NE - For whatever happens today in the free-agent draft, Clyde Keller has done his part.
So has Florida State, riding Keller's pitching - sprinkled with a little defense here, power there - to advance further in the College World Series. Keller threw a four-hitter with two walks, and Pedro Grifol added an insurance ninth-inning homer, as FSU edged past Wichita State 4-1 Sunday before 15,800 at Rosenblatt Stadium. It was the largest crowd FSU has played in this season.
The Seminoles, 54-16, get two days off before facing the winner of Tuesday's rematch between Wichita State, 64-16 and Arkansas on Wednesday at 8:10 p.m. If FSU wins Wednesday, it will win the East Division of this two-bracket tournament and will be able to play for the championship. They won their 12th straight game for the first time since the 1986 team did it twice.
It was a fairly typical FSU win: Solid pitching, timely defense, some manufactured runs and an occasional homer. But, far away, it was Keller, who said his tricky palmball pitch wasn't as effective as usual. But Keller, harder than others on his performances, still upped his record to 13-0, still got his fifth complete game, still was awesome on Sundays (8-0). He remains the only undefeated starter in this series.
All with the pro scouts watching, and seeing what they've seen his entire career, against a Shocker team that boasted a .327 batting average coming in.
"I wasn't throwing like I'd like to," Keller said. "I struggled the first four, five innings, and just tried to hit the spots after that."
FSU coach Mike Martin was much kinder.
"The key to the game was Clyde Keller," Martin said. "Clyde was in total control of the situation."
Just ask the Shocker hitters, who got tangled up like the other 13 victims. And that 82-mile-an-hour fastball kept looking faster as the game went on.
"It's a good pitch," said catcher Eric Wedge, who went 1-for-4. "He took quite a bit more off it than a regular curve. Then, in my last (at-bat) I saw seven fastballs."
Keller retired the last 11 batters he faced after getting into some mid-game trouble. He walked Jim Audley with one out, then a run-scoring double to P.J. Forbes that was helped by Brian Gilliland's error on the throw in from Brad Parker. The ensuing run-scoring groundout to Wedge began the string of 11 retired batters.
It wasn't enough for Wichita State, which couldn't answer FSU's first-inning run when Bob Reboin scored on Rob Bargas' infield grounder. That was thanks mainly to picture-perfect defensive play. After Audley led off with a walk and went to second on a groundout, Wedge hit a shot to deep right. Chris Brock caught the ball on a long run, and immediately whipped the ball into second baseman Rocky Rau. Audley was trying to stretch his tag-up from second, but Rau made the perfect throw home to Grifol for the out.
"Some players tend to admire the catch, but Brock immediately threw the ball back," Martin said.
So, what about today for Keller? As usual, he was realistically optimistic.
"I didn't really have any incentive tonight except to go out and throw as well as I could. Hopefully, I'll get drafted, but if I do it will be pretty low."

Seminoles must win, or it's over.
By David Lee Simmons
OMAHA, NE - Suddenly, Florida State's back is to the wall.
So here comes Mike Martin, bounding down the steps of the Marriott hotel lobby, looking fresh and relaxed.
"This might sound a little crazy," Martin began, as the sportswriters scribbled away, "but I slept the best last night since I've been here."
Why? FSU had just lost a 7-4 heartbreaker to Wichita State Wednesday night in the College World Series, forcing a third meeting between the two teams tonight. Another loss, and FSU is eliminated from its 10th CWS without a title.
Because, forced or not, FSU wants confidence.
"There are a lot of things you can say about last night that could make you frustrated," Martin said thoughtfully. "But the best thing is for us to react to a situation in a positive way."
In other words, forget about the last game, worry about the next. Martin's been preaching that to this 54-17 team all season long.
The Seminoles are trying to break out of an offensive slump that makes its postseason success all the more surprising, and are trying to rebound in their most crucial hour.
This one is for the ticket to the championship game Saturday at 1 p.m., before a nationwide television audience, complete with Brent Musburger and CBS.
Now, more than ever, FSU must rebound.
Wichita State coach Gene Stephenson knows exactly where Martin's coming from. Just as FSU did this year, Wichita State came into the third game last year undefeated.
In that game, Wichita State came within one strike of a shot at the championship game before blowing a 3-1 lead to Arizona State and lost 4-3 in 10 innings.
Unable to recover, the Shockers got pounded by the Sun Devils 19-1 two days later.
"Having 40 hours to stew about it really had a negative effect on us," Stephenson said. "Based on what happened last year, I figured if we won (Wednesday) night, we can win the series."
But, unlike FSU, the Shockers last year didn't have Clyde Keller pitching after the Wednesday loss. Keller, 13-0 in 15 starts this season, remains the only unbeaten starter in the CWS. He has the infamous palmball, and he has the cool.
"Clyde Keller is certainly the man we want to have the ball," Martin said. "He won't get rattled."
Keller feels the same way.
"I don't feel any pressure because I still feel we're in a better situation than they are," Keller said. "They're into their down-the-line pitching and we have our bullpen ready to go."
Indeed, Martin noted that only starter Gar Finnvold is unavailable for duty.
So what about the FSU bats? In three games, two of them against Wichita State, FSU is batting .229. It has scored four runs in each of those games.
Can they come back with the same confidence that Martin and Keller seem to possess?
Probably not, if the two mainstays of the offense this year, centerfielder Marc Ronan and left fielder Brad Parker, don't come around. The two roommates are a combined 1 for 18 in the series.
While Parker has been prone to bouts of streak hitting, Ronan was a model of consistency before being hit in the Atlantic Regional with a severe case of strep throat.
Consider this: Ronan scored 60 runs in FSU's first 60 games. In the postseason, Ronan has scored three runs in nine games.
"The whirlpool timer hasn't gone off yet," Martin joked. "They've left their bats in the whirlpool, so we're hoping the timer goes off soon."
But seriously, folks.
"Marc is surprising because, for the first time since coming to (FSU), he's truly pressing," Martin said. "He's putting too much pressure on himself. But we'll take care of that at practice. We're just getting our ball club out of the hotel, take some batting practice, doing some chewing and spitting."
And staying as confident as possible. There is little choice. Martin wants this one. Badly.
"This ball club wants it more than any ball club I've been associated with," Martin said. "I believe we're going to win it this year."

A shocking finish.
Wichita State eliminates FSU.
By David Lee Simmons
OMAHA, NE - An early exit by Clyde Keller could mean nothing less than an exit by Florida State in the College World Series.
Keller, undefeated coming into this third matchup with Wichita State, gave up five runs in five-plus innings as the Seminoles lost 12-9 to the Shockers Friday night before 15,667 at Rosenblatt Stadium.
FSU, ending the season at 54-18, failed in its bid for a third trip to the CWS championship game, which pits Wichita State and Texas today at 1 p.m. It was FSU's 10th appearance in the CWS without a title, and Coach Mike Martin's fourth trip with the same result.
Poor relief pitching by Tim Nedin and Ricky Kimball didn't help Keller as Wichita State took a 4-4 game and broke it open, 11-4. But a five-run rally by FSU in the eighth kept it close.
It was Keller's first loss since May 29 of last year, a 7-2 decision to Stetson in a regional.
Shocker starter Pat Cedeno got revenge on in his rematch with Keller, overcoming a four-run second and a three-run homer by Brad Parker in the eighth to improve to 14-4. Cedeno got tagged with Sunday's 4-2 loss to FSU.
Keller even gave up a run in the first, an RBI double to Mike McDonald.
But the game was still in control when Keller left, with the score tied 4-4. Martin pulled Keller after the senior had given up a leadoff single to Pat Meares, who had singled during Wichita's three-run fourth.
Martin went to Nedin, whose first pitch to Todd Dreifort was a high fastball went off the glove of catcher Pedro Grifol for a passed ball, moving Meares to third. Nedin followed that by allowing RBI doubles to Dreifort and Mike Jones.
Nedin came out after successfully fielding a grounder by Mike Wentworth, and Kimball got the last tow outs to end the inning.
Kimball didn't do much better in the eighth, giving up three hits, three walks and a wild pitch as the Shockers pulled ahead, 11-5.
