LSU rallies to beat FSU in 10 innings.
OMAHA, NE - Down in Florida State sports history, it will go as The Slip.
As FSU center fielder Ronald Lewis planted his feet to make a routine catch, he fell. Along with him, went the Seminoles in the opening round Friday night of the College World Series.
The Seminoles, 54-17, will play Arizona State on Sunday at 5:10 EDT in an elimination game. The Sun Devils lost 8-3 to Oklahoma State in the first game Friday.
"it was one of the best baseball games I've seen for nine innings," said FSU coach Mike Martin, "then it got ugly."
The 10-inning fiasco began with some tough hitting by LSU first baseman Pete Bush. After falling behind 0-2, he fouled off five pitches to work Lewis for a walk. Then Richie Vasquez hit a line drive right at Lewis in center. As he was falling, Lewis desperately knocked the streaming drive down with his bare hand, putting runners at second and third with none out.
Richie Lewis struck out Terry Belle, but Mike Papajohn laid down a squeeze bunt for the go-ahead run. The trouble got serious when Lewis let the bunt roll under his glove as he desperately tried to make a play at the plate.
Things deteriorated from there, Rob Hartwig bounced out as Vasquez was tagged out in a run-down. But Andy Galy bounced a two-run single to center to make it 4-1. Deflated, Lewis walked only his third batter of the game and then was knocked out when Jack Voight tripled off the glove of the freshman Ronald Lewis on the warning track in dead center.
"We made some mistakes, and I feel very badly for the young man who made it," said Martin. "My job is to not let that young man get down."
FSU struggled in the bottom of the 10th, eventually bringing the tying run to the plate twice in the inning. But reliever Barry Manuel struck out Edwin Alicea and Jose Marzan to end it.
LSU starter Gregg Patterson would have been the story of the game, if not for Blackwell's homer and The Slip. He pitched 9 1/3 innings, allowing only seven hits. He walked none, a huge factor, and struck out six.
Patterson did a number on the running game Martin said this team must have. FSU did not steal a single base.
"I don't know if that has happened all year," said Martin. "That's a credit to Patterson. He must have thrown over to first base 30 times."
With the running game gone, they had to hope for the homer that almost saved them. The running game was jammed because Patterson is a lefthander, and FSU has not run nearly as well on lefties. Secondly, Patterson threw strikes, limiting baserunners.
Patterson stayed tough. He got FSU in order in the eighth, but the ninth was tougher.
Blackwell homered, his 11th of the season, on a 2-1 waist-high fastball.
"I was upset because he hit a bad pitch," said Patterson.
The momentum had swung, or so it appeared.
"I was proud of this team, the way it came back to the dugout blew it off, and came back," said LSU coach Skip Bertman. "And we came back against Richie Lewis, and he has to be one of the finest college pitchers who has ever pitched."

Pollack shuts Sun Devils out of the Series.
OMAHA, NE – The Seminoles are still alive here on the Great Plains. For that they can thank Chris Pollack.
Pollack threw the first complete-game College World Series shutout since 1983 to lead Florida State past Arizona State 3-0 on Sunday in the second round of the College World Series. Don Erickson’s safety-squeeze bunt and Ed Fulton’s two-run homer provided the only offense.
And in a strange twist, each FSU infielder made an error. But those same defenders turned three double plays to back Pollack. And that’s not to mention the show-stopping diving catch by center fielder Ronald Lewis that ended the seventh inning.
The Sun Devils, unimpressive in two games here, finished their season at 40-27, FSU, 55-17, will play the loser of Tuesday night’s Texas-Stanford game Wednesday night at 8:10. As it was Sunday, the loser goes home.
“Certainly Chris Pollack dominated the game,” said FSU coach Mike Martin. “He’s done that three or four times this season. This was about as well as he has thrown.”
Calvin Schiraldi, then of the Texas Longhorns, threw the last CWS complete-game shutout at James Madison. “It couldn’t have come at a better time than here at the College World Series,” said Pollack, 10-4.
The senior lefthander did a masterful job of pitching out of trouble when he had to. In each of the first five innings, Pollack stranded a Sun Devil runner in scoring position.
At the same time, side-arming righthander Mike Schwabe was baffling FSU for six innings. In the seventh, with some help, the Seminoles broke through.
Barry Blackwell, nearly the hero of the first round with his ninth-inning homer against LSU, started it. His roller to second was misplayed for an error. Marc Giordano, who has continually produced when he’s in the lineup, bounced a perfect hit-and-run single to right and Blackwell went to third.
With one run meaning so much and with the next hitter, Don Erickson, in the death-grips of a 1-for-37 slump, the call was obvious. It still required the execution.
A skilled bunter, Erikson pushed the safety-squeeze for a hit past the mound. A chance to break it open, however, was wasted. Deion Sanders, who had the game’s only two-hit effort, lined a single to center. Giordano, who stayed near second until the ball cleared the infield, was sent home by third-base coach Chip Baker. Giordano was an easy out.
As things turned out, that gaffe was not so important. The Sun Devils could do nothing with Pollack. When they put two on with one out in the fifth when Erickson made FSU’s fourth error, Pollack simply got Tony Peralta to bounce into an easy double play.
In the sixth, with the game still scoreless and tense, Tim Spehr singled with one out. But Mike Burrola, bunting for a base hit, popped it up at the plate. Spehr was easily doubled off first.
And Lewis really took the wind out of them in the seventh. With two outs, John Finn hit a long blast to the warning track in right-center. The speedsters, Sanders and Lewis, converged at full speed. Amazingly, as Sanders was flashing by, Lewis stretched out and caught the ball as he tumbled on the track and up against the wall.
“That was probably the biggest pickup of the game,” said Pollack of the catch.
Fulton made it almost comfortable in the eighth. After Edwin Alicea had walked, stole second, and was picked off second base for the second out, Jose Marzan patiently worked a walk. With Schwabe concerned about Marzan taking off, he made a big mistake to Fulton, who turned it into his 18th homer of the season.
“It was just the opposite of where I wanted it,” said Schwabe. “It was supposed to be low and away, but instead it was high and tight, right in his wheelhouse.”
Pollack, a finesse pitcher relying more than usual on his fastball, closed it out for his first complete nine-inning game of the season. He had twice thrown seven-inning complete games.
“The main thing a pitcher like him has to do is have an absolute command with both pitches,” said Arizona State coach Jim Brock. “He did that about as well as I have seen.”

Longhorns steer FSU back home.
OMAHA, NE – The pre-game talk was all about The Guarantee. Richie Lewis said flatly that he would win this game whether the opponent was No. 1 Texas or No. 2 Stanford.
“It will by fun, and I will have an attitude, and we will win this game,” he said Tuesday at a press conference.
Though it may not go down in sports history with the called shots of Babe Ruth and Joe Namath, Lewis put his best stuff where his mouth was. This time it wasn’t enough.
The Texas Longhorns scored two in the top of the 10th and held off Florida State 6-4 on Wednesday night to eliminate the Seminoles from the College World Series.
The Rosenblatt Stadium public address man Jack Payne announced at game’s end that it was one of the best games in CWS history. It was hard to argue with that.
Lewis, 15-4, struck out 13 in a heroic performance. But this time he was matched by Texas pitchers Mark Petkovsek and Curt Krippner, 14-1.
FSU ended its season at 55-18. Texas, 60-10, will play Oklahoma State on Friday. The game time will be determined by the outcome of tonight’s Oklahoma State-Stanford game.
The Lewis guarantee looked shaky very early. On the fourth pitch of the game, Texas center fielder Elanis Westbrooks took a fastball into the strong crosswind toward right. It carried out for his second home run of the season.
Lewis worked through that shocker, retiring the side in order, two on looking third strikes. Except for a few mistakes by each pitcher, the game settled into a showcase for two of the nation’s best pitchers and best teams.
Texas starter Mark Petkovsek was every bit as impressive as Lewis. But he made a mistake with a fastball to fastball-hungry Ed Fulton. The Seminole designated hitter launched it well over the right-center-field fence in the bottom of the first.
Fulton, stung by lasting until the 16th round of the major-league draft Tuesday, took out his frustration on that fastball. It was his team-leading 19th homer of the season, and second in the last two CWS games.
Texas jumped ahead again in the top of the third. Lewis walked lead-off man Rusty Crockett. He raced around to score when Brian Johnson rocketed an opposite-field double to right.
The Seminoles answered quickly in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Edwin Alicea launched a solo homer, a blast well over the right-field wall. He stood at home plate to admire his 16th homer of the year, then strolled into a homerun trot. That may have escalated a war of words between the teams that flared after the first inning when Lewis screamed into the Texas dugout.
But for the next four innings there was only eye-popping pitching. Lewis, in one of his favorite situations, got into a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth. He struck out Crockett and Brian Johnson, and got Westbrooks to bounce out.
Petkovsek matched that. The Seminoles put the lead-off hitter on base for each of the next four innings. When their running game is clicking, that usually translates into runs. Not this time.
Barry Blackwell and Marc Giordano singled to open the fourth. But after failing to sacrifice, Don Erickson struck out. Petkovsek then escaped. Again, high fives all around.
It got more dramatic in the fifth. The Seminoles loaded the bases with none out. But Fulton popped out, Blackwell struck out and Giordano bounced out.
Petkovsek helped himself by picking Deion Sanders off first base with one out in the seventh. That hurt FSU in a big way. Jose Marzon followed with a triple to left-center, a long shot on which the Texas outfielders miscommunicated. Petkovsek worked out by striking out Blackwell.
Lewis, in the meantime, had taken complete command. He retired 11 Longhorns in a row until he hit Westbrooks with an 0-2 pitch with two out in the seventh. That set off more talking, and eventually sent first-base umpire Jon Bible to the Texas dugout to settle things down.
While the Seminoles were spinning their wheels, Texas broke through in the eighth. Scott Coolbaugh, Texas’ impressive third baseman, singled with one out. After Lewis struck out Kevin Garner, Coolbaugh stole second. Two pitches after Lewis began walking off the mound with what he thought was a third strike, Todd Haney doubled a 3-2 pitch down the left-field line for a 3-2 lead. Mike Patrick followed with a line single into center to make it 4-2.
Neither of these teams looked to have any intention of going home. The Seminoles struck back. Giordano doubled to left, and Erickson singled him home. Erickson, who had two hits after striking out twice, entered the game in a massive 2-for-39 slump.
Erickson advanced to second when Westbrooks let it bounce away as he tried to rush for a play at the plate. Sanders bunted him over to third, and after Curt Krippner relieved, catcher Brian Johnson’s passed ball allowed Erickson to score with the tying run.
