OMAHA, NE - Southpaw Ed Drapcho silenced Florida State's bats with a three-hitter and handed the Seminoles their first shutout of the season as Penn State won a 7-0 decision in the opening round of the NCAA College World Series here today.
The Seminoles still have a chance in the double-elimination tournament, however. They meet Connecticut at 11 a.m. Sunday. Connecticut lost to favored Texas, 3-0, today.
Two Big Doubles
While Drapcho handled Florida State with ease, the Nittany Lions clubbed three Seminole hurlers for 11 hits - two of them doubles with the bases loaded.
A four-run outburst off starter Jerry Boxer gave Penn State a comfortable lead in the second inning. Two walks, a pair of singles and a double by Carl Emery did the work.
A lone run came in the sixth inning on a walk, a fielder's choice and two more singles. Boxer retired at that point and was replaced by lefty Bobby Waits.
Two in Ninth
Penn State added a couple of insurance runs in the ninth off Waits and Fred Kenney. A walk, a single and another walk loaded the sacks again and Guy Tirahassi came through with a two-bagger.
Drapcho, not fast but with a good curve ball and fine control, fanned eight Seminoles and walked only two. Only FSU batters to hit safely were Pfil Hunt, Gerald Philp and Dale Koch.
Boxer and Waits issued seven walks between them. Three Lions - Steve Baidy, Don Stickler and Ron Rainey - got a pair of singles each.
It was Penn State's 20th victory in a row, Drapcho's 11th. Boxer's record dropped to 7-3.
FSU Coach Danny Litwhiler is expected to pitch righthander Tom Garcia (4-0) against Connecticut Sunday. Southpaw Jack Bristol (7-1), who would have gone against Penn State since five Lions batted lefthanded, still is out with a pulled side muscle.

OMAHA, NE - Florida State's baseball team was traveling the long road back to Tallahassee today after being bounced from the National Collegiate tournament, 5-3, by Connecticut University here yesterday.
Trailing 5-0 entering the last inning, the Seminoles scored three on a bases-loaded triple by pitcher Frank Slusser. They got the tying runs on base with only one out but couldn't count again.
The Seminoles had fallen, 7-0, to Penn State on Saturday. Following their second loss yesterday in the double elimination affair, the team was feted with a steak dinner by the Omaha Jaycees, who "sponsored" them in the tourney.
Behind Early
Connecticut went ahead 1-0 in the first inning on two walks and a single by Ken Cullum.
With two out in the fifth, Connecticut erupted for four big runs.
The bases were loaded and it looked like the Seminoles were safely out of it when Dick Howser received an easy grounder at shortstop. He started to throw to second for the force but Pfil Hunt was absent from his post and Howser ran for the bag instead. His effort wasn't in time - all runners had been moving on a 3-2 pitch. Howser then threw to first, but that bid to get the batter was also late. One run scored.
Bill Stephens singled and two more runs crossed. Then centerfielder Owen McCarron erred on Nick Briante's fly and the fourth run came in before Tommy Garcia finally pitched his way out of it.
Garcia gave way to Slusser after pitching the sixth.
One-Out Rally
With one out in the ninth pinch-hitter Jerry Coach started the rally, drawing a base on balls batting for Johnny Sheppard. Bob Rosell singled and McCarron beat out a drag bunt for a hit that loaded the bases. Slusser then slashed a 3-bagger that cleared the sacks.
Howser walked to keep things going. But Hunt flied out and Mike Copps popped to the catcher.
The Seminoles left 10 runs stranded, Connecticut nine.
