Michael Polite
Florida State left the Metro Conference and joined the Atlantic Coast Conference. The nine members of the ACC were Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Virginia and Wake Forest.

Derrick Myers, 6-1, 185, G, Pittsburgh, Pa. - Enters his first year with the Seminoles in contention for vacant point guard position...seasoned veteran at point guard who knows how to play the game...very determined individual with quickness and talent to be a fine guard can push the ball up the floor or work half court sets...very strong player who can penetrate against most defenses...loves the game and plays with reckless enthusiasm...likes to quarterback the club and keep the offense in sync...key for him will be how quickly he picks up Kennedy's offensive philosophy...coaches like his defense as much as his ballhandling...should give the Tribe the backcourt quickness they have lacked over last few seasons...led Allegheny to a 36-2 record and the national championship for junior college division II...averaged 19.8 points and eight assists per game as a sophomore at the Pittsburgh school...was named most valuable player of the national championship tournament and an All-American last season...second all-time leading scorer in Allegheny history with 1,545 points...set school record with 21 assists in a single game last year...scored an average of 20.0 points, eight rebounds and eight assists per game as a freshman...earned first all-state honors as a senior at Frew Mill High School in New Castle, PA...set school record for assists in a career and points in a season with 536 as a senior...averaged 25.6 points and 13 rebounds per game as a senior...dished 5.5 assists per game for the Longhorns...led team to state 1A playoffs his senior year...majoring in criminal justice...Roommate: Rodney Dobard...Hobbies: a proficient, self-taught gymnast...Born: May 30, 1969, in Philadelphia, PA.

Andre Reid, 7-0, 220, C, Miami - Potential is the best word to describe Reid as he enters Florida State...coaches feel that he has all the natural ability needed to be a great one but his lack of experience at the game may slow his development...runs the floor extremely well and is an excellent passer...coaches are optimistic that he can pick up the system and contribute early on the young Seminole team...terrific defensive player who set records for blocked shots in high school...smooth shot and rebounding instincts will help development...needs to build up physical strength for rebounding battles of big time college basketball...averaged six blocks a game as a senior en route to setting a new state record for career blocks with 432 while at Sunset High in Miami...averaged 20 points and 15 rebounds a game last season...an all-county selection as a junior and senior...scored an average of 19.4 points and 12.4 rebounds as a junior...had accumulated 253 blocked shots after his junior year...never played organized basketball before enrolling at Sunset High...plans to major in business management...Roommate: Jesse Salters...Notables: parents were born in Jamaica...Nicknames: "Big Play" and "Dre"...Born: January 23, 1971, in Bronx, NY.

Jesse Salters, 6-6, 195, F, Tampa - Among the state of Florida's most accomplished players, he should be a valuable player in the Seminole scheme...excellent shooter who works extremely well around the goal...outside shot will be the key to playing time in initial season...quick learner with excellent attitude...good rebounder who uses ball fakes well on the inside...should mold perfectly into Kennedy's system...runner up in last year's voting for the state's "Mr. Basketball" award after standout career at Tampa's Chamberlin High...two time Tampa area player of the year as well as athlete of the year...second all time leading scorer in Hillsborough County (Tampa) history with 2,222 points...led the Chamberlin Chiefs to back to back state tournament appearances after the school had never before made it to tournament...named first team all state as a junior and senior...averaged 32.6 points and 13.5 rebounds per game as a senior...excellent shooter who hit 80 percent of his field goals in six post season games last year...selected for Team Florida as both a junior and senior...voted Tampa player of the year over All-American Clifford Rozier...averaged 25.1 points, 13 rebounds and five assists per game in leading Chamberlin to a 28-2 record his junior year...plans to major in communications...Roommate: Andre Reid...Notables: visited Russia with USA All-Star team...Nickname: "Air Assault"...Born: September 10, 1971, in Tampa, FL.

FSU won for just the ninth time in 31 attempts in Freedom Hall. Holding USC guard Harold Miner to 16 points - eight below his average - was a big part of the victory.

LOUISVILLE, KY - Pat Kennedy was a young Iona assistant coach learning his trade under Jim Valvano when Florida State last won a game in the NCAA tournament.

Now after taking some advice from his former head coach, and implementing some defensive strategy of his own, the Seminoles again can boast of an NCAA first-round victory.

Florida State, the No. 7 seed in the Southeast Regional, turned back Southern California 75-72 Thursday night. The Seminoles will face either Indiana or Coastal Carolina on Saturday night at about 8:30 p.m.

"He (Valvano) always seemed to have his teams ready for the tournament, have them loose," Kennedy said of Valvano, who won a national championship at N.C. State.

FSU had not won a game in the NCAA tournament since 1980, when the Seminoles defeated Toledo 94-91 in the first round. And this will mark just the third time in seven tries that FSU has advanced to the second round.

FSU (21-10) advanced by winning in Freedom Hall for just the ninth time in 31 attempts. FSU last won here in 1989, beating Louisville 81-78.

The Seminoles defeated the Trojans with a well-executed defensive strategy that helped limit Trojan guard Harold Miner to just 16 points.

Miner, however, had a different opinion. "I had quality shots," Miner said. "They just didn't fall."

Miner, who averaged 23.8 points a game and shot 48 percent from the floor during the season, made just 7 of 27 attempts for 16 points.

Making sure Miner had an off-night was a key for FSU as it struggled offensively in the second half after taking a 55-44 lead on Charlie Ward's 3-pointer with 16:17 remaining. Southern Cal was outscored 15-6 during four minutes that stretch.

But the Trojans than answered with their own run, albeit a less impressive one.

While FSU did not make a basket in nearly 4 ½ minutes that followed Ward's basket, USC scored six points to cut the lead to 55-52 with 12:24 remaining.

The Seminoles, despite making only one field goal in the final 10:42, built a more comfortable lead before allowing the Trojans back in it.

It was Miner, after he missed yet another 3-point attempt with 1:01 remaining, who hit a 3-pointer with 43 seconds left to cut the FSU lead to 71-68.

FSU missed five free-throw opportunities in the first half, but made the ones necessary to win.

Douglas Edwards led FSU with 24 points.

"He's obviously one of the top young talents in the nation," USC's George Raveling said.

The Seminoles tied Southern California 38-38 at halftime when Edwards made a strong move to the basket before dishing the ball off to Dave White for the dunk.

White also played a role in defending Miner. Because Kennedy decided to challenge Miner with physical defensive play, players like White, Polite and Boyd were called upon to defend him.

Miner didn't make his first basket until the 11:39 mark, when his 3-pointer tied the score at 18. The sophomore made just 4 of 14 field-goal attempts and scored just nine points be the half.

Big season ends under second-half Indiana flurry.

LOUISVILLE, KY - Florida State had better athletes and size, and for one half a lead over No. 3 Indiana Hoosiers.

But that was before a double-dose of Indiana's favorite color did the Seminoles in 82-60 before 18,946 in Freedom Hall.

RED-hot shooting from the perimeter, and RED-hot shouting by Hoosier fans was exactly what Indiana needed to counter FSU's height advantage, and a 11-point deficit.

Indiana's strategy to put Pat Graham, Calbert Cheaney and Greg Graham on the perimeter, coupled with FSU's 33.3 percent shooting in the second half, helped knock FSU out of the NCAA's Southeast Regional.

"We hoped they didn't heat up, and not only did they heat up, but they got the crowd right back in it," FSU head coach Pat Kennedy said.

The loss ended an eight-game winning streak for FSU and what otherwise was an excellent finish to the Seminoles' basketball season. FSU finished 21-11, its best record since the 1988-89 season when the Seminoles finished 22-8.

For Indiana, its seven-game winning streak puts it in the Southeast Regional's semifinal against Kansas at Charlotte, N.C.

After getting back into the game (38-32) with two-straight 3-pointers to end the first-half, Indiana made its first-four 3-pointers after halftime to lead FSU 45-40 with 16:30 left.

It was a lead Indiana never relinquished as Graham stayed hot, and FSU's Rodney Dobard and Charlie Ward got into foul trouble.

"We told our guys (at that point) they are known as an outstanding second-half team," Kennedy said.

Pat Graham led the early surge in the second half by scoring eight of Indiana's opening 10 points. He finished with 13 points, 10 of which came in the second half. Calbert Cheaney led Indiana with 24 points - 14 after halftime.

"We were a little unsure about trying to stay in the zone or going to man-to-man," Kennedy said. "Once the momentum shifted, we started missing offensively."

In sharp contrast, at least near the basket, was FSU's first half. The Seminoles dominated underneath before halftime, outrebounding Indiana 24-14.

"They were very aggressive and confident in the first half," Indiana coach Bobby Knight said.

Again, it was offensive rebounding in particular that helped FSU overcome poor shooting (3 of 13) during the opening six minutes.

"We did a great job controlling the boards in the first half," Kennedy said. "We needed the type of first half that we had. "Even though (Indiana) shot 50 percent, they didn't hurt us from the perimeter. At that time we were very pleased."

It was the play of Edwards, whose four offensive rebounds equaled Indiana's first-half total in that category, that helped FSU to an 11-point lead with just 1:41 remaining.

FSU's play was maybe as good as it can get during the middle 10 minutes of the first half.

Edwards finished with a team-high 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Ward, despite fouling out, had eight points, four rebounds and five steals. Michael Polite added 12 points and nine rebounds.
