Aubry Boyd, 6-6, 172, G, Macon, Ga. - Satisfied one of Pat Kennedy's prime objectives in that he is a prominent guard that put FSU in the national spotlight...listed in several scouting and college basketball publications as the number one point guard prospect in the nation...gifted athlete who has all-star potential...comes from excellent basketball background...should adjust easily to Seminole style and could see early action...one of the premier guards in the country...played along side Eric Manuel (Kentucky) to form what most considered to be the top high school backcourt in the nation last year...fundamentally sound ball player with great athletic potential...signed during the early signing period prior to his senior season at Southwest High School in Macon...Coach Don Richardson is considered to be one of the best in the country and Southwest High has produced some of the nation's top talent including: NBA stars Norm Nixon and Jeff Malone as well as Georgia All-American Terry Fair and FSU graduate assistant Michael Hunt (a former Furman standout)...believed to be one of the keys to FSU's emergence as a regular top 20 team...listed in the Hoop Scoop's Top 45 and Basketball Weekly's Top 15 guards list...starred for the U.S. East team in the Dapper Dan Roundball Classic over the summer...averaged 12.0 points, 7.8 rebounds and eight assist's per game as a senior...roommate: Tat Hunter...hobbies: Basketball, swimming...nicknames: A.B., Black...notables: grew an inch since signing with FSU...birthdate: January 7, 1969.

Tony Dawson, 6-7, 215, F, Kinston, N.C. - Another of the real national standouts in this recruiting class...considered to be a forward with unlimited scoring potential...works extremely well around the basket...gets a lot of offensive rebounds for points...satisfied a need for scoring with departure of Randy Allen and Pee Wee Barber...a prolific scorer who should gain national recognition as a Seminole...one of the most interesting backgrounds in college athletics...consecutive auto accidents resulted in breaking the same leg three times as a child resulting in noticeable limp...many wondered if he would walk again...most college recruiters were scared off by his injury...recognized as one of the top junior college prospects in the nation last year while starring for Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City...named first team All-American and Florida Junior College Player of the Year for 86-87...averaged 30 points per game for Coach Jim Oler, who is still FSU's all-time leading scorer...shot 68% from the field and grabbed an average of 12 rebounds per contest...scored 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting in Junior College all-star game...starred at Kinston High School in Kinston, North Carolina...played center position at high school level winning all-state recognition by several polls...came from same high school that produced NC State center Charles Shackelford and local press believes he had the most talent...high school area produced some of the nation's top talent including former Seminole Mitchell Wiggins...College Major: Communications...roommate: Derrick Mitchell...summer job: Internal Revenue Service...birthdate: August 25, 1967.

Brad Johnson, 6-6, 195, F, Black Mountain, N.C. - Although he joined the basketball team late in pre-season drills, he is expected to see playing time...a redshirt quarterback on the Seminole football team...excellent shooter with great basketball knowledge...was a top basketball prospect who chose to play both football and basketball for FSU...could see role as a zone buster early in the season...3A Player of the Year in the State of North Carolina...starred for four years as the quarterback and all-state forward at Owen High...twice selected Western North Carolina player of the year...named to the Greensboro News and Record all-state team as a senior...averaged 26.3 points and 8.5 rebounds during senior year...led team to a 24-5 record and berth in state playoffs...finished his outstanding two-sport career with 2,293 points in basketball and over 4,500 yards as the Warhorses' quarterback...named to All-Western squad in football and basketball for the past three years...president of both the senior class and FCA at Owen...roommate: Gene Houpe...hobbies: movies, jumping rope, music...notables: longtime friend of FSU linebacker Terry Warren since both fathers worked summer camps together...heavily recruited as a pure college basketball player as well as a blue chip football recruit...birthdate: September 13, 1968.

Blake Miles, 6-6, 195, C, Tallahassee - Brings excellent basketball background and could play several spots...played mostly guard in high school for FSU assistant coach Tom Carlson...an all-state selection who should prove valuable to the Florida State squad...could have early adjustment problems to college game but coaches feel his solid fundamentals will key success...holds Maclay High School records for a career in points (1,506), rebounds (1,136) and assists (806)...will be reunited with high school coach Tom Carlson, now an assistant on Pat Kennedy's staff...earned all-state honors after leading Maclay to the championship round of the state regional tournament...listed among top 45 small forwards by Cage Newsletter...averaged 15.1 points, 11.2 rebounds and 7.1 assists last season...played on Team Florida's AAU squad...brother Bobby played for the Seminoles in early '80's...College Major. Derrick Mitchell, 6-3, 190, G, Jacksonville - Seasoned veteran that lends experience at point guard spot...one of the state's top junior college prospects...not a flashy style but gets the ball where it should be on floor...good defensive player with reputation for stealing the ball...gives young backcourt some immediate leadership...led his Florida Junior College (Jacksonville) team to a ranking of 17th in the nation last year...FJC was ranked number one in the state of Florida most of the season before an upset loss in the first round of the state tournament...led the state with an average of 5.7 steals per game...averaged 20 points per game last season...was a three-sport star at Raines High School in Jacksonville...named to prestigious all-city team in football, basketball and baseball...talented enough to play either guard or wing position in high school...College Major: Criminology...roommate: Tony Dawson...hobbies: playing ball, music, movies...nickname: "D"...career plans: hopes to work for the FBI...birthdate: January 29, 1967.

Iowa ends FSU's season.

LOS ANGELES, CA - It looked so good with three minutes left.

That's when George McCloud made a 3-pointer to give FSU a one-point lead. That was the last time it would look good.

The Seminoles didn't score again until it was as good as over. Iowa did, and the Hawkeyes beat FSU 102-98 Friday at Pauley Pavilion.

FSU overcame a 16-point deficit and took a 93-92 lead on McCloud's shot. Then it suddenly lost him and Tony Dawson to fouls, and the comeback was doomed.

FSU finishes the year 19-11, while the Hawkeyes improved to 23-9 and advance to the second round of the NCAA Western Regional.

The big pregame talk was about Iowa's fullcourt press, but FSU had little problem getting the ball upcourt. Its trouble began once Iowa settled into a zone which all but eliminated the Seminoles' inside attack in the first half.

So what does a team do when it can't score from the inside? It scores from the outside. A riskier proposition, but a profitable one if it works.

It was working splendidly for the Seminoles during one sizzling stretch midway through the first half. They hit four straight 3-pointers in two minutes to take a 23-17 lead with 13:14 left.

Then Iowa got into the long-range act with B.J. Armstrong and Jeff Moe making 3-pointers to cut into the lead. Armstrong gave FSU big problems because he could penetrate and draw fouls as well as he could shoot.

He made two free throws with 10:18 left to cut FSU's lead to 27-26, then Roy Marble put in an offensive rebound to give the Hawkeyes a shortlived lead.

It was shortlived because Tharon Mayes drilled another 3-pointer, then he broke free for a basket on an inbounds play. McCloud followed with another 3-pointer to make it 35-28 with 6:45 left. The Hawkeyes had more than a press to get them by. Jones, Roy Marble and Kent Hill continually exploited FSU's inner defense for baskets and offensive rebounds, while Armstrong carried them the rest of the time with his slick play. He sparked a decisive run after FSU had taken a 41-33 lead with 5:03 left.

The Seminoles would score only five more points in the first half while Iowa threw in 18. It was 51-46 when the buzzer sounded, then the real trouble began.

FSU was slipping into foul trouble, and it seemed unlikely that the 3-point magic would continue all night. And how long could the Seminoles stay cool against Iowa's relentless defensive pressure?

Kennedy had said his team had to shoot well for 40 minutes, or else. A dry spell could be deadly because the press makes Iowa ultra-explosive. The demolition started in the second half.

The Hawkeyes had a 62-54 lead with 16:30 left, then almost everything FSU tried went sour. Over the next four minutes it was Iowa 15, Tony Dawson 5.

The Hawkeyes' press finally started getting to FSU, and even when the Seminoles got a decent shot, they found that they're once-golden outside touch had turned colder than an Iowa winter.

Hills' tip made it 77-61 with 12:30 left. The Seminoles were officially in trouble. But just when the matter seemed just about settled, they came back to life.

Brad Johnson made two straight 3-pointers to end a three-minute FSU scoring drought. Dawson and Armstrong traded baskets, then McCloud nailed another 3-pointer and it was 81-72 with 10:22 left.

FSU had quickly made the game interesting again, but could it make it any closer before Iowa righted itself?

You betcha.

The Seminoles hung within 10 points for the next five minutes, then went on a 10-0 run. McCloud's 3-pointer from the corner gave FSU a 93-92 lead with 3:01 left.

Iowa had every right to be stunned, but Armstrong wouldn't have any of it. He went right back and made a baseline jumper to give the Hawkeyes the lead again, then the foul trouble really caught up with the Seminoles.

McCloud was called for a charge, his fifth foul. Iowa went down and missed, but Horton got the rebound and Dawson fouled him on the follow shot.

It was good, as was his free throw. The Hawkeyes had a 97-93 lead. More importantly, it was Dawson's fifth foul.

Suddenly FSU had been stripped of its two biggest offensive threats. That was all the Hawkeyes needed.
