Georgia Tech left the Metro Conference and was replaced by Virginia Tech. The seven members of the conference were Cincinnati, Florida State, Louisville,
Memphis State, Saint Louis, Tulane and Virginia Tech.
Emotional farewell for Hugh Durham.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - In an emotion-choked, 60-second telephone call, ultra-successful basketball coach Hugh Durham Friday morning severed a 22-season love affair with Florida State, and then, in the afternoon, enthusiastically embraced the University of Georgia which had wooed him for the past two weeks.
Durham, only the third coach in Florida State history, made his resignation telephone call from Athens, Ga., to Athletic Director John Bridgers at 9:30 Friday morning, and barely got the words out.
"It was very difficult for him," Bridgers said. "It took him a while to say it, and then he choked up."
Bridgers, after requesting some advice on finding a successor for the man who turned FSU into a national contender, quoted him as saying: "Don't make me talk now, John. I can't talk. I'll call you later."
Durham hung up.
Later in the day, Bridgers himself only partly composed, said, "It's days like this that I wish I wasn't the athletic director."
And, all the while secretaries all over the athletic department were shedding emotional tears.
Then one of them typed up Bridgers' official statement:
"Florida State is losing a great basketball coach in Hugh Durham," he said. "He has done an outstanding job of building a basketball program here, and we're fortunate to have had him as an assistant and head coach for the past 19 years.
"We wish him success and happiness in his new position."
Then Bridgers, tugging at his thin hair, said: "You know, there's not many like him."
It wasn't much of a day for words around the FSU athletic department.
Words, however, flowed a little easier in Athens, where there was a happier atmosphere for an afternoon press conference when two of the Durham children showed up wearing University of Georgia T-shirts. However, there was still a hint of sentiment in the air from the old days when Durham told reporters that "it was not an easy decision. … Just because it was the right decision, it doesn't make it any easier."
Durham, in a telephone conversation early Friday night, revealed how his wife Malinda and sons David, Doug and Jim, who had been brought into Athens by private plane, agonized over the changes of roots most of Thursday night.
Durham called it "the toughest decision I ever had to make in my life,"
And then said why.
"Anytime you're trying to make a decision with your head and your heart gets involved its tough," he explained.
Durham likened it to the breakup of a romance.
"I've had a long love affair with Florida State," he said, "and people who've never been in love, can never know the hurt you can have."
Then, with a stiff upper lip, he composed himself and spoke of the opportunity and challenge and the reasons behind his decision to take the job at Georgia, which has not had a winning basketball team in half a dozen seasons and has never finished higher than second in the Southeastern Conference. The Bulldogs have not had a 20-game winning season since 1932.
"That makes it a challenge," he said. "And, I accept the challenge because I am convinced that Georgia, from the president on down, has made the total commitment to have a competitive basketball program … and, if we can be competitive in the Southeastern Conference, we can be competitive on a national level."
Georgia officials, who said Durham signed a five-year contract worth $35,000 a year, appeared downright delighted with their selection.
Durham carved a 230-95 record in 12 years as head coach of the Seminoles, and that ranks him among the top 15 active coaches in the country with a 70.7 winning percentage.
But, he leaves seven short of equaling the 237 victories compiled by the late Bud Kennedy, the man he played for, coached with and succeeded to the head coaching job in 1966.
Durham had just one losing season, his first, in those 12 years.
As it turned out, his last FSU team gained almost as much national attention as the 1972 runnerup, as Durham turned in perhaps his best coaching job ever as the Seminoles ran up a 23-6 record, won the regular season Metro Conference title after being picked to finish fourth, and then threw a scare into No. 1 ranked and eventual national champion Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
UK, ironically, will be one of those SEC powers Durham will have to contend with twice annually now. He had worshipped the Wildcats as a youngster when he was growing up in Louisville.
Indeed, one of his early heart-rendering decisions came when he opted to attend FSU on a basketball scholarship instead of UK on a football grant.
Fortunately for Seminole basketball, he chose Florida State.
In three years as a player, he etched his name all over the record book. Even though he is not now a record holder in any category, his name appears 16 times among the all-time leaders.
He stands No. 7 on the all-time scoring charts with 1,381 points in 73 games, which averages out to 21.9, third best in all FSU history.
And, ironically, one of the greatest games he ever played came when he scored 36 points, the ninth highest scoring performance ever by a Seminole player, against the Bulldogs in Athens in 1958.
Memories like that, and a million more, all helped trigger the flood of tears which overwhelmed all those close to a man that left a big
foot print in Tully Gym.
Joe Williams comes back to Florida State.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Joe Williams has returned to his adopted state to fish, walk in the sand and coach Florida State's basketball team for $35,000 a year.
The modishly-dressed Williams, bedecked in a blue-and-white checked suit, was paraded before a press conference Saturday afternoon to officially confirm what Williams himself called "the worst-kept secret in the state for the last three or four days" - that he would, indeed, succeed Hugh Durham as the Seminoles' head coach.
"We lost a great coach in Durham," Athletic Director John Bridgers told the press conference. "But we've found an equally great coach in Joe Williams. His personal charm, recruiting ability and leadership are among his best assets."
Williams, who started his coaching career at the junior high level, said it was "like coming home," even though home could be most anywhere for the 44-year-old coach who was born in Oklahoma, did some growing up near the Florida Everglades, played college ball at Oklahoma City under Abe Lemons, graduated from SMU and got his masters degree in English from the University of Florida.
He comes back to FSU after leading Jacksonville University to national prominence and Furman to five Southern Conference championships in eight years.
He said he didn't plan to make a lot of changes in Florida State basketball, but said he wanted to create a lot of basketball interest in the state and one way to do that was to play Florida, Jacksonville and South Florida on a home-and-home basis. He also suggested that "it would be interesting" to play a home-and-home series with Georgia, where Durham went to coach.
After the press conference he talked some about his coaching philosophy, recaqlling his eaelier days at Florida State as a graduate assistant and rehashed the glory days when he was coaching FSU rival Jacksonville U.
Earlier he had said he would be achieving "two of my goals in life" by returning to FSU, where he started his college coaching career in 1962 on the same staff with Durham and at the same time football coach Bobby Bowden was here as a graduate assistant.
"It's nice to be back in Florida," he said in opening his remarks to the press. "I've pictured myself as eventually living here, and why not now … you know once you've had the sand between your toes …
"And, being able to live in Florida and have one of the finest basketball programs in the country will allow me to fulfill two of my goals."
Williams, who lived in a house on the lake in Greenville, S.C., said however that it still wasn't an easy decision.
"It was, indeed, a very difficult decision," he said. :I couldn't find many negative things in either place … there was good fishing there … I really love to trout fish, but the deep sea fishing here is great, too."
Williams, however, left a clear impression that the fishing would have to wait until after he met with the current FSU players this afternoon and until after future Seminole players were procured.
"Recruiting is the No. 1 priority," he said later. "I just got here and we're short on players … and, no doubt about it, our recruiting has been hurt. … The national signing day was last week and we're a little late, but will go after what's left."
Actually, Williams was on the recruiting trail Friday night for the Seminoles, then at a previously committed speaking engagement at a coaching clinic in Virginia Saturday morning (accompanied by FSU sports information director Mark Carlson, forcing a late arrival back in town Saturday after signing a five-year contract Friday afternoon.
Williams said he would seek the best players available.
Williams will now have to wait 21 days before hiring his assistants, in compliance with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare's affirmative action program.
"I have no color quota," he said in private talks. "I'll recruit white kids and I'll recruit black kids."
Whatever, he said his philosophy was "to fit the style of play to the player and use every player to the best of his ability."
"We want to build on our strengths and hide our weaknesses," he said.
Williams, who has a 234-148 record in 14 years as a college coach at JU and Furman, said he had enjoyed a lot of success with a "tempo control" system in the last few years.
"We try to upset the opposition's patterns," he said, "by changing tempo to fit our capabilities.
"But, if everything was equal, I'd prefer an all-out pressure defense to force the opposition out of their game … and use an offense that is basically team-oriented, but one that gives players a chance to do things they do best."
That pretty much describes Williams' national runnerup team at Jacksonville in 1970, that featured Artis Gilmore and Rex Morgan in the classic shootouts with FSU and Dave Cowens.
That JU team, on the surface, appeared to be a free-spirited one that caught the fancy of the national sportswriters.
Williams reflected on that team's misleading image late Saturday.
"The press had a preconceived idea what we should be," he said. "And, we went along with it. … The players laughed and joked about it. … "But, I remember what Ed Jucker (ex-Cincinnati coach and TV announcer at the time) had to say when someone asked him what he thought about our team's lack of discipline.
"He said, 'it's the best disciplined team I've seen so far. … I haven't seen them take a bad shot yet,' and that's the way it was.
"That team had a lot of charisma and they enjoyed playing the game, so we let them have a lot of freedom, because they did everything I asked them to do, and that's discipline."
Williams said he never believed in strict rules or relied much on the honor system.
"I've found that the professors had the honor and the students had the system," he said.
Williams, who took the head job at JU in 1964 after serving as assistant at FSU and Furman for one year each, compiled a 92-61 record with the Dolphins while lifting them from small college to major college ranks.
He said he had been on Bud Kennedy's FSU staff "because I could afford it," as a graduate assistant.
"They gave me a scholarship less laundry money," he recalled. "I was getting less than the players. I learned a lot."
He apparently learned enough to make him a consistent winner, suffering just two losing seasons in his 16-year coaching career that got started at a Jacksonville junior high school.
"I was teaching English and coaching the eighth grade team free," he recalled. "We were county champions."
The next year he coached Ribault High School in Jacksonville to the Gateway Conference title and then came to FSU as a graduate assistant for one year. Then he spent one year ar full pay as a Furman assistant before being named head coach at JU.
He returned to Furman as the head coach in 1970-71 after taking JU to the national championship game against UCLA.
At Furman he compiled a 142-87 record for a winning percentage of .620, best among all Furman coaches.
He had three 20-or-more victory seasons with the Purple Paladins and once, over a two-year period, won 26 straight Southern Conference games.
He said he may have left his best team at Furman, "one that will be ranked in the top 20" in preseason.
"There was not really any reason to leave," he said. "I just felt I had to do what's best for my life.
"The decision to come to Florida State was based on a personal feeling of what I would like to do. Building this program to its highest would be more satisfying to me than anything else."
Running a close second surely would be a little fishing or, perhaps, a barefoot walk in the Florida sand.
