Knuth and Caffrey Named AVCA All-American Honorable Mentions. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State volleyball’s Taryn Knuth and Payton Caffrey were named Honorable Mention All-Americans, the
American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced on Wednesday. This marks the first All-American recognition for both players, and they become the program’s 19th and 20th players to receive an
All-American award. “I'm really proud of how hard Payton and Taryn played this year,” said head coach Chris Poole. “They are both very deserving to be recognized nationally. I know they both have
high expectations and helped lead us through this season. They are both great teammates and have a bright future.” Both Knuth and Caffrey were most recently named to the AVCA All-East Region Team,
with Caffrey taking home the region’s Player of the Year honor. This marks the eighth year Florida State saw multiple players earn and All-American recognition, starting with Brianna Barry, Jordana
Price, Mira Djuric and Rachael Morgan in 2009 – Poole’s second season at Florida State. Since then, FSU has seen at least one player earn the award every year. FSU has three Second Team honorees, one
Third Team recognition, and has now seen 23 players earn Honorable Mention. Caffrey was named the ACC Player of the Year earlier this season, after finishing the regular season leading the
conference in kills (462), kills per set (4.36), points (521.5) and points per set (4.92), all of which are ranked in the top 30 nationally. The Chuluota, Fla. native was the only player in the
conference with 300 or more kills in ACC play this season, and the only player with an average of more than five points per set. Her 346.5 total points in ACC play is more than 30 points higher than
the next player below her. Caffrey set the program’s rally scoring era record for total attacks, picking up 1,155 in 2018. Her 476 kills ranks third in the modern era, while her 4.37 kills per set
ranks second in the modern era and fifth all-time. In ACC play alone, her 305 kills and 728 total attacks this season both rank third all-time, while her 4.42 kills per set ranks fifth. Knuth built
on her impressive freshman season in her second year at Florida State. Her 188 total blocks and 1.72 blocks per set both led the conference this season, and those stats still rank second and third in
the nation, respectively. The Johnston, Iowa native’s 1.72 blocks per set ranks second in program history, while her 188 total blocks ranks ninth all-time (behind Gabrielle Reece’s 189 blocks earned
her senior year). Knuth’s 1.72 blocks per set in 2018 set the program’s rally scoring era record, and ranks second all-time. She also tied the second-most solo blocks earned in the modern scoring
era with 30, tied for fourth place with 158 assisted blocks, and earned the third-most total blocks in the modern era with 188. In ACC play, Knuth set three program records with 109 assisted blocks,
129 total blocks and 1.87 blocks per set. The ACC saw 14 players on the Honorable Mention list, with two players representing Duke, Florida State, Notre Dame and Syracuse, and three representing
Louisville and Pittsburgh.

Volleyball Drops Season Opener to No. 4 Minnesota.
The Seminoles’ young lineup wasn’t enough to hold off the Golden Gophers in FSU’s first match
of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Florida State volleyball team dropped its season-opening match against No. 4 Minnesota on Friday night, falling in three sets to the Gophers on the first day of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
While the Seminoles were able to keep up with the Golden Gophers throughout the match, it wasn’t enough as Minnesota held the lead in all three sets.
The Gophers saw 45 kills in the match while the Seminoles tallied 42, but Minnesota’s efficiency helped them out-hit the Seminoles with a .268 hitting percentage.
The two teams saw similar defensive performances throughout the match, as the Gophers earned eight total blocks (two solo), no blocking errors and 56 digs. The Seminoles saw 55 digs in the match, led by senior libero Kelsey Wicinski with 16 digs, and saw 6 blocks and two errors in the front row.
In her first career appearance, redshirt freshman setter Adrian Ell recorded a double-double with 17 assists and 11 digs, good for second-best on the team in both categories.
Set 1 – UMN 25, FSU 17
The match started off with both teams looking well-matched as the Gophers and the Seminoles
stayed tied through the first few points. Minnesota jumped out to an 11-7 lead and FSU was unable to catch up throughout the set.
The Gophers stayed tough on offense throughout the remainder of the set, outhitting the Seminoles until the end to win the first 25-17.
Set 2 – UMN 25, FSU 21
The Golden Gophers once again got out to an early lead in the second set, but Florida
State was able to tie up the score multiple times through the middle of the set. Accuracy on offense helped the Seminoles stay competitive with the Gophers’ tough front court.
Minnesota gained another lead but it was quickly closed by the Seminoles, who came back to tie it up 18-all. Although the second set saw the most efficiency by FSU, Minnesota was still able to pull out a win in the end to gain a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set 3 – UMN 25, FSU 21
The Gophers looked like they were going to run away with the third set with an early lead on the Seminoles, but
consistency and increased accuracy helped FSU close Minnesota’s lead. After trailing 6-17 in the set, FSU’s pressure at the net sent them on a 5-2 run.
Down 11-20, the Seminoles saw increased offensive efficiency and caught up to trail 19-23. At Minnesota’s set point, back-to-back kills from Caffrey and Murray held off the win, but the Gophers closed it out to win the match.

Volleyball Falls to No. 9 Wisconsin in Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
FSU took the first set but lost the next three to the Badgers. The Seminoles head to
the Colorado State Tournament next.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – In its second and final match of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, the Florida State volleyball team fell to No. 9 Wisconsin on Saturday night. After winning the first set with a dramatic 6-0 run, the Badgers took the next three sets to take the match.
Florida State saw a number of players step up over the weekend, as four different Seminoles recorded a double-double, including two new additions to the lineup – setter Adrian Ell and outside hitter Payton Caffrey – and returning seniors Christina Ambrose and Brianne Burkert.
In Saturday night’s match, both Caffrey and Ambrose tallied more than 15 kills each and added on 20 and 14 digs, respectively, as both made an impact as six-rotation players over the weekend.
While the Seminoles hit .148 in the match, FSU’s defense was able to hold Wisconsin’s offense to just a .169 hitting percentage. Through the first three sets FSU stayed competitive with the Badgers, never letting them lead by more than four points.
“Although we went 0-2 this weekend, it was against two of the top 10 teams in the country,” head coach Chris Poole said. “Six of the seven sets we played this weekend were all competitive. We had our chances, but just simply made key mistakes. At the same time, this team has a lot of potential and I believe they are going to keep improving every week we play. We have work to do, but this is a group of young ladies that are very hungry and want to get better this season.”
Set 1 – FSU 25, UW 23
The Seminoles jumped out to an
early lead in the beginning of the match, using a big offensive presence to stay ahead of the Badgers. While Wisconsin eventually passed FSU and took the lead and jumped out to a 23-19 lead, Florida
State come back to go on a 6-0 run, closing out the first set with a pair of back-to-back kills from Christina Ambrose.
FSU saw its most efficient offensive performance in the first set, hitting .310 with 14 kills on only 29 total attacks.
Set 2 – UW 26, FSU 24
The beginning of the second set stayed tight, but the Seminoles were the first team to gain a two-point lead in
the set, reaching 10-8 and holding the lead until the Badgers closed the gap to 19-18, and eventually tied it back up at 21-all, and held the momentum throughout the end of the set to tie up the
match.
Set 3 – UW 25, FSU 23
While the Badgers gained an early lead in the set, FSU was able to stay tough and let Wisconsin make its own errors. The Badgers eventually came back
to lead at 15-14 and Florida State was unable to regain the lead.
Just a point away from set point, FSU was able to regain some momentum as Wisconsin made errors, letting the Seminoles catch up. FSU saw 16 kills in the set, which was enough to keep the Badgers from running away with the set, but Wisconsin was able to stay tough on offense to close out the set for a 2-1 lead.
Set 4 –
UW 25, FSU 22
Both teams stayed within a point of each other for the first 11 points in the set until Wisconsin was able to pull ahead at 7-5. From there the Badgers never let the
Seminoles regain the lead.
A 5-0 run from FSU held Wisconsin from reaching set point, but a pair of kills closed out the match for the Badgers.

Front Row Comes Together as Volleyball Sweeps TCU.
Increased offensive efficiency and 15 team blocks held off the Horned Frogs in Florida State’s
first win of the season.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Florida State volleyball team earned their first win of the season on Friday afternoon (8/31) as the Seminoles swept the TCU Horned Frogs in the first match of the Colorado State Tournament.
The win snaps TCU’s four-match win streak and gives FSU its first victory after going 0-2 against two top-10 opponents in opening weekend. The Horned Frogs proved to be tough competition in the beginning of the match, but 15 blocks and a .361 hitting percentage helped the Seminoles keep their momentum for a three-set sweep.
Six different players saw a hitting percentage above .300 in the match, led by junior Payton Caffrey’s 12 kills on 28 attacks (.321) and sophomore Taryn Knuth’s .500 attack percentage (6 kills on 12 attacks, no errors). FSU also had six players contribute to the front-row defensive effort, led by senior Ashley Murray’s nine blocks (two solo) and Deja Williams’ six blocks (one solo).
Set 1 – FSU 25,
TCU 21
The Horned Frogs took an early lead in the first set, but the Seminoles stayed close and tied up the score seven times before pulling into the lead with a pair of blocks from senior
Ashley Murray and a kill from sophomore Tiana Jackson to gain FSU’s first three-point lead in the set. With the score tied up again at 14-14, the Seminoles held the lead until the end to take the
first set.
The Horned Frogs took more swings in the set, but the Seminoles held them to just .103 hitting in the set, using five total blocks to capitalize on their 7 hitting errors. The Seminoles’ offense was led by senior Christina Ambrose’s four kills and sophomore Taryn Knuth’s .500 hitting percentage (two kills on four attacks), while Murray slowed down the opponent with three total blocks.
Set 2 – FSU 25, TCU 17
TCU started off the second set with another early lead, but FSU caught up to tie up the score 4-4, and took the lead with a block from Murray and
sophomore Deja Williams. The Seminoles held the advantage throughout the rest of the set, increasing their offensive efficiency and holding the Horned Frogs to under .100 hitting.
FSU’s five blocks in the set helped to hold the Horned Frogs to just .074 hitting in the set, the lowest efficiency the team saw in the match.
Set 3 – Florida State 25, TCU 18
The Seminoles used
their momentum from the second set in the third, and once again took the lead in the set after the 4-4 mark. For the third set in a row, FSU was able to put up five total blocks, led by Knuth’s four
(one solo). The Seminoles saw a season-high .560 hitting percentage in the set and held the Horned Frogs to just .125 hitting in the set.
Caffrey saw her best performance in the final set, putting down seven kills on eight attacks with no errors for a .875 hitting percentage. The team’s performance in the final set helped them finish with 15 total blocks (with five in each set) and a .361 hitting percentage.

Volleyball Loses Close Battle with No. 25 Colorado State.
The five-set match was decided by only two points; junior Payton Caffrey reached the
1,000 career kill mark and set two career records on her birthday.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Florida State volleyball team came back from a 0-2 deficit to send a match against No. 25 Colorado State to a fifth set, but was unable to close out the close decision and fell to the Rams on their home court on Saturday night (9/1).
The Seminoles move to a 1-3 record this season, going 1-1 in the first two matches of the Colorado State Tournament.
While CSU held the advantage in the first two sets, Florida State cut down on errors to swing the momentum back in its favor to tie up the match 2-2. Both teams stayed within only two points of each other throughout the fifth set and tied it up 13 times, but CSU was able to win consecutive points at the right time to win the set and the match.
Colorado State was the third AVCA Top-25 team the Seminoles have faced so far in the non-conference season. The Seminoles had never seen a ranked CSU team before this weekend.
Junior outside hitter Payton Caffrey reached the 1,000 career kills mark in Saturday night’s match, hitting the milestone in the first set. Caffrey transferred to Florida State this season from West Virginia, where she tallied a majority of her kills in her first two years as a Mountaineer. She now has 1,019 total career kills.
Set 1 – CSU 25, FSU 21
The set started with both
teams looking evenly matched, as the two kept the score within only a point throughout the first ten points. Colorado State took the lead once again at 20-19, and from there Florida State was unable
to regain the lead before the Rams closed out the set.
The Seminoles earned three blocks in the set compared to the Rams’ two, but were outhit by the opponent and made more offensive errors.
Set 2 – CSU 25, FSU 11
Colorado State used its momentum from the first set to start the second off strong, leading from the beginning without letting the Seminoles catch up. While
the Rams outhit the Seminoles in the set, they also earned three blocks and picked up more kills and digs than FSU.
Florida State saw its lowest hitting percentage in the second set while CSU recorded its best percentage of the night. The second set was the only one of the five where the Rams earned more blocks than the Seminoles.
Set 3 – FSU 25, CSU 23
FSU came out
strong in the beginning of the third set, gaining the lead early and holding the advantage over CSU throughout most of the set. The Seminoles let the Rams make their own errors and cut down on errors
of their own to outhit the opponent .469 in the set – the best the team saw all night. . After the score was tied at 1-1, Florida State never let the Rams catch up and stayed in the lead until the
end.
The Seminoles did not see a single attack error until the end of the set, hitting above .500 until the Rams came back to close the score at 20-19 FSU. The increased efficiency and four total blocks helped keep CSU from finishing out the set for a win.
Set 4 – FSU 25, CSU 16
Florida State was able to stay consistent once again in the fourth set, hitting .467 with 15
kills and only one error. The Seminoles gained the lead early in the set and held it until the end to tie up the match 2-2.
While neither team picked up a block in the set, FSU was able to pick up more digs and take more swings at the ball than the Rams. Colorado State made more errors in the set than Florida State, making four attack errors and four service errors.
Set 5 – CSU 20, FSU
18
The fifth set proved to be the closest of the match from the beginning, as the two teams stayed within only a point of each other until FSU took a 10-8 lead. The Seminoles outhit the
Rams for the third straight set, tallying 14 kills on 32 attempts for a.344 hitting percentage.
In the end CSU was the first team to win two consecutive points at the right time, winning the set 20-18 to win the match.

Volleyball Falls to Bearcats in Five to Close Out CSU Tournament.
Three players tallied double-figure kills for a .331 team hitting percentage,
but Cincinnati pulled out the win at the end of the fifth set.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Florida State volleyball team lost a five-set decision on Sunday afternoon (9/2), falling to Cincinnati
in the team’s final match of the Colorado State Tournament. After going 1-2 in its second non-conference tournament, the Seminoles now have a 1-4 season record.
Both of FSU’s five-set matches this weekend were decided in four points or less in the final set, while the Seminoles also recorded their first sweep of the season with a three-set win over TCU on Friday (8/31).
Florida State hit an average of .318 across all three matches, and earned more total blocks than all three opponents. Sunday’s match against Cincinnati marked the first time this season Florida State lost when outhitting their opponent.
The Seminoles saw a number of top performers in Sunday morning’s match, as senior Christina Ambrose, junior Payton Caffrey and sophomore Taryn Knuth all hit double-figure kills. Caffrey also recorded her 28th career double-double (second as a Seminole) with 13 digs.
Set 1 – UC 25, FSU 18
While the Seminoles stayed consistent and saw a .500 hitting
percentage in the beginning of the set, errors on Florida State’s side helped Cincinnati hold the lead. FSU counteracted Cincinnati’s tough offense with consistent defense in the back row, setting up
the offense to tally more kills than the opponent throughout most of the set. The momentum shifted back to Cincinnati towards the end as the Bearcats’ offense came together, hitting .378 to close out
the set.
Senior libero Kelsey Wicinski collected nine of the Seminoles’ 19 digs in the set, helping to keep the Bearcats to 15 kills.
Set 2 – FSU 25, UC 21
Florida State
started out the set on a 5-0 run fueled by three kills, and held the lead over the Bearcats throughout the set. While UC caught up to tie the set at 18-18, FSU regained the lead and held it until the
end.
The Seminoles saw a .364 hitting percentage in the set, picking up 16 kills and only four errors. FSU’s offense was supported by a consistent defensive effort, as the front row picked up four blocks and the back row tallied 16 digs.
Set 3 – FSU 25, UC 18
Cincinnati took an early lead in the third set, letting Florida State make its own errors and capitalizing on it
with five kills through the first 20 points in the set. From there, the Seminoles’ offense came together, hitting .333 in the set with 14 kills, and using 14 digs and three total blocks to hold the
Bearcats to just .125 hitting in the set.
Set 4 – UC 25, FSU 22
While Florida State’s offense put pressure on the opponent in the beginning of the set, the team’s defense
struggled against the Bearcats’ tough swings. While FSU stayed consistent throughout the set and was able to hit .321 with 13 kills and only four errors, the Bearcats were able to penetrate the
offense with 17 kills to outhit the Seminoles.
Set 5 – UC 15, FSU 11
While FSU’s offense shined once again in the beginning of the final set, errors on the Seminoles’ side of the
net helped keep the match close throughout the first half. Florida State saw its best hitting percentage in the fourth set, putting down 8 kills with only one error for a .438 percentage, but it
wasn’t enough to hold off Cincinnati’s offense from earning 10 kills to take the match.

Balanced Offense Powers Volleyball’s Sweep of VCU in Home Opener.
Cutting down on offensive errors and staying consistent on defense led to a
quick 3-0 win in the Seminoles’ first match of the season in Tully Gym.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team came out swinging in the team’s home opener, hitting .475 to sweep VCU on Friday night (9/7). The Seminoles move to 2-4 this season, and the team is looking to even up its record with two more matches tomorrow in the Home2 Suites by Hilton Tallahassee Seminole Invitational.
The team’s season-leading offensive performance was fueled by five different players who all hit above .300 – redshirt seniors Christina Ambrose and Ashley Murray, junior Payton Caffrey and sophomores Tiana Jackson and Taryn Knuth.
By staying strong on defense to gather 32 digs and four total blocks, the Seminoles held the Rams to just .096 hitting in the match, holding VCU’s kill leader, Vicky Giommarini, to -.048 hitting. Senior libero Kelsey Wicinski picked up 13 digs in the three-set match to help a strong defensive effort that kept VCU to the lowest hitting percentage the Seminoles have seen from an opponent this season.
Florida State is the third ACC team to sweep VCU this season, and it marked the second time in only six matches this season the Seminoles won in three sets.
FSU’s second match in the tournament will be held at Tully Gym on Saturday (9/8) as the Seminoles take on Southern Miss at 11:30 am. Parking will be restricted, and fans will have to print out a parking pass in order to attend the match (details below). The remainder of the tournament will be held at Florida A&M’s Al Lawson Center on Saturday.
Set 1 –
FSU 25, VCU 12
The Seminoles gained an early lead on the Rams in the first set, leading by as much as 9-2 before VCU was able to see a few more points come in. While the Rams picked up a
pair of blocks early on in the set, FSU controlled their side of the net to reduce errors and put down 17 kills.
Florida State saw a stronger defensive effort than VCU in the set, picking up nine digs to hold the Rams to just seven kills. While the Rams caught up to break into double digits, FSU was able to run away to take the set 25-12.
Set 2 – FSU 25, VCU 17
VCU looked
stronger at the beginning of the second set, catching up to the Seminoles to tie up the score at 5-all, 6-all and 7-all. FSU was able to pull away when the Rams began making more errors and three
consecutive kills gave FSU a 12-7 lead. From there, VCU kept the score close but a block from Caffrey and Murray and a .469 offensive effort held the Rams down as FSU closed out the set 25-17.
Caffrey saw more attacks hit the ground as she totaled eight kills on 10 attacks and hit .700 in the set. The Seminoles saw their first team block of the match in the second set, and a strong defensive effort from libero Kelsey Wicinski and setter Adrian Ell tallied more digs (9) than the Rams had combined (7).
Set 3 – FSU 25, VCU 16
The opponent looked even stronger
in the first half of the third set, tying up the score 10 times and taking the lead three times. Ambrose took control of the offense to pick up a pair of kills to put FSU back in the lead, and the
Seminoles used the momentum to run away with the set.
Ambose, Caffrey and sophomore Tiana Jackson all saw a perfect offensive effort in the set, while three total blocks from Murray, Knuth and Deja Williams kept the opponent to .000 hitting in the set.

Volleyball Sweeps First Home Tournament.
The Seminoles shutout all three opponents over the weekend; Caffrey, Ambrose and Murray were named to the
All-Tournament Team.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team shutout Southern Miss and Florida A&M on Saturday (9/8) to close out the team’s 3-0 weekend at the Home2 Suites by Hilton Tallahassee Seminole Invitational. FSU improves to a 4-4 record, and has yet to surrender a single set in any of its four victories this season.
Following a Friday night victory over VCU, the Seminoles turned around to defeat the Golden Eagles on Saturday morning on their home court, and traveled across town to defeat the Rattlers on the Florida A&M Campus at night.
Over the three matches this weekend, the Seminoles saw an average hitting percentage of .409 to outhit every one of their opponents, and had fewer errors than any of the three teams they faced.
In the 16-match series against the Golden Eagles, FSU has not given up one set and has now shutout USM in every match since the series began in 1982. The Seminoles have now earned nine-straight shutouts against Florida A&M, and have won the last 24 matches in the series.
FSU def. USM 3-0
Set 1 – FSU 25, USM 16
The Seminoles held Southern Miss to a negative hitting percentage
from the beginning of the set, using a strong defensive effort and consistent hitting to stay ahead. FSU did not record a single offensive error until after they earned their 23rd point in the set.
FSU hit .484 in the set, picking up 17 kills on 31 total attacks. Sophomore Tiana Jackson saw another perfect set, picking up three kills on three attacks without registering a single error.
Set 2 – FSU 25, USM 17
While the Golden Eagles kept the score close in the beginning and tied it up twice, a block from Murray and Jackson at the 6-3 FSU mark swung the momentum back
in the Seminoles’ favor. A 3-0 run gave the Seminoles an 11-6 lead, and a solo block from Knuth in the middle and back-to-back kills from Caffrey put FSU on a 6-0 run. FSU stayed ahead in the set to
gain a 2-0 lead in the match, picking up only two errors in each set.
Set 3 – FSU 26, USM 24
The Golden Eagles cut down on errors in the first half of the set, avoiding offensive
errors for the first half to see the best hitting percentage of any of the three sets played.
While the Seminoles held the advantage throughout the set, USM went on a 6-1 run to take the lead for the first time at 23-21. A service error helped the Seminoles close the gap to just a point, but another kill for the Golden Eagles gave USM set point. Caffrey went on a run, picking up two kills and teaming up with Knuth for a block, to stop the Eagles and take the set 26-24.
FSU def. FAMU 3-0
Set 1 – FSU 25, FAMU 22
Despite picking up a few hitting and service
errors in the beginning, Florida State was able to put down 14 kills in the first set to hit .312 to start the match. The Seminoles’ tough offensive effort was led by three players who picked up
multiple kills without an error in the set – Ambrose, Murray and Williams.
While FAMU saw its best offensive effort in the first set, Ambrose, Caffrey and Williams teamed up with Knuth to put up three blocks in the set, holding the Rattlers down to keep the lead throughout the set.
Set 2 – FSU 25, FAMU 16
Reducing service errors helped FSU close out the second set faster
than the first, and a more efficient offense kept the Seminoles in the lead in the set. Knuth led the defense in the front row again, assisting in three total blocks, while Wicinski led the back row
with four digs in the set to keep the Rattlers to under .100 hitting.
Set 3 – FSU 25, FAMU 15
Florida State closed out the final set in a fitting way, hitting .500 with 19 kills
and only two errors to close out the most efficient matches the team has seen so far this season. While the Rattlers took more swings and saw fewer attack errors, Knuth’s two solo blocks and the
team’s 17 digs – led by Wicinski’s seven – kept the Rattlers to a low attack percentage and pushed the team to a quick 3-0 win.
The Seminoles’ three All-Tournament Team selections – Ambrose, Murray and Caffrey – all picked up multiple kills without registering a single error in the final set.

Volleyball Drops Four-Set Decision to No. 11 Gators.
FSU rallied to outhit its in-state rival in the third set, but the Gators’ strong presence at
the net and consistent defense held the Seminoles back from a win.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Seminoles had the home-court advantage in this year’s installment of the Fresh From Florida Sunshine Showdown, but the standing-room-only crowd wasn’t enough to hold off the Gators on Wednesday night (9/12). The two teams battled through four sets, but No. 11 Florida came out victorious in the midweek matchup.
Florida State moves to a 4-5 overall record this season with only one match remaining in before ACC play begins. Wednesday night’s match marks FSU’s third loss to an AVCA Top-25 program in the 2018 non-conference season.
The Gators got out to a quick start in the first set, staying ahead of the Seminoles from the beginning and holding it until the end. Pressure from UF’s offense helped the Gators outhit FSU in the set. Florida carried the momentum from the first set into the second, gaining and early lead and holding it until the end for a 2-0 lead in the match heading into intermission.
The Seminoles came out of intermission to start off the third set on a 7-0 run, and never let the Gators close the gap by more than four points throughout the set. Limited errors and a number of blocks from FSU gave UF the opportunity to make its own errors, keeping FSU in the lead until they were able to close out the set and send the match to a fourth.
The fourth set was close in the beginning, but the Gators outhit the Seminoles in the set once again. Four total blocks from Florida kept FSU’s attack percentage down, but strong defense in FSU’s backcourt slowed UF’s tempo. While FSU held off the match point, Florida was able to close it out and win the final set to take the match 2-1.

Volleyball Edged Out by Auburn in Four Sets.
The Seminoles put up 14 total blocks in the match and outhit the Tigers, but couldn’t hold off Auburn
in both teams’ final non-conference match of the season.
AUBURN, Ala. – The Florida State volleyball team rallied to take a set off of Auburn, but the Tigers pulled out a four-set win over the Seminoles on Sunday afternoon (9/16). FSU moves to a 4-6 season record to close out its non-conference slate.
While the Seminoles pushed harder on offense in the beginning of the match, Auburn stayed consistent to hold FSU back throughout the first two sets. For the third time this season, Florida State came back to win the third set after dropping the first two, but it wasn’t enough to hold off Auburn from closing out the match with a win in the fourth.
“We started slow in the first set again,” said head coach Chris Poole. “While I appreciate their fight in not quitting, we have to learn to finish points and finish sets. We find ourselves up a lot in points, but we don’t make the plays at the crucial part of the set.”
FSU now moves on to ACC play, where it heads into what could be one of the toughest conference seasons it has seen in a while. Ten ACC teams finish non-conference play with a winning percentage, and conference-leader Pitt currently sits in the AVCA Top-10.
“Non-conference matches are over,” Poole said. “We need to learn from our mistakes and be better. We have a lot of season remaining, and our coaching staff takes the responsibility on getting better.”
Set 1 – AU 25, FSU 20
The first set started off close as Auburn’s tough defense kept the Seminoles back from taking the lead. Consistent passing on the Tigers’
side gave FSU the ball more often, giving the Seminoles more chances to push on offense. Florida State had more kills and total attacks than the Tigers in the set, but errors on FSU’s side of the net
and a more consistent defense on Auburn’s side helped the Tigers pull out the first set.
Set 2 – AU 28, FSU 26
Florida State jumped out to an early lead in the set, earning the
first three points from kills by Knuth and Caffrey. Auburn continued to send the ball back to the Seminoles, giving FSU more chances to attack, but a number of errors from the Seminoles’ side of the
net helped Auburn catch up.
After the Tigers took the lead, the Seminoles went on a 4-0 run to tie it up at 13-all, led by Knuth in the middle as she put down a kill and teamed up with Caffrey and Ell to earn three consecutive blocks. Murray followed it with a kill and a pair of blocks to put the Seminoles back in the lead, but Auburn was able to regain the lead and win the set by two.
FSU saw nine total blocks in the set, holding Auburn to just .061 hitting with two unforced errors.
Set 3 – FSU 25, AU 16
The set stayed close once again in the beginning, but a 5-0
run by the Seminoles forced an early timeout as a pair of kills from Caffrey and a block by Ell and Knuth gave FSU a 10-6 lead. The Seminoles kept up the run to go 9-0 for a 14-6 lead, and never let
the Tigers catch up from there.
The Seminoles hit .486 in the set, earning 18 kills with only one forced error from a block. Ambrose led the offense with eight kills to hit .500, while Burkert and Knuth both hit .600 or better.
Set 4 – AU 25, FSU 23
Auburn took the lead early in the set, taking more swings and letting Florida State make its own errors once again. FSU
reduced unforced errors at the net and was able to outhit Auburn in the set. While both teams looked similar in both offense and backcourt defense, three team blocks and two aces on Auburn’s side
helped keep the Tigers in the lead and helped them close out the set for a win.

Offensive Effort Pushes Volleyball Over Duke.
The Seminoles saw one of their most efficient performances of the season in the team’s ACC opener;
FSU didn’t record a single error in the third set.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team (5-6, 1-0 ACC) starts off conference play on the right foot this season, as the Seminoles swept Duke (6-4, 0-1) on Friday night in both teams’ ACC opener.
The Seminoles saw their second best offensive performance of the season against one of the ACC’s top defenses on Friday night, hitting .438 (51-5-105) and adding on seven total blocks and 41 digs for a well-balanced effort.
Florida State has now taken the last five matches in the series against Duke, and Poole’s record against the Blue Devils moves to 12-5. The last time the Seminoles swept Duke was in 2013, with Friday night’s victory marking the sixth time FSU topped Duke in straight sets.
Set 1 –
FSU 25, DU 23
The Seminoles were faced with a tough Duke team from early on in the set, but FSU was able to stay consistent to keep the set close. Pressure on offense from the start helped
the Seminoles fight through Duke’s tough back row defense, and their ability to control the ball helped them set the tempo and stay in the lead.
While the Blue Devils recorded more kills and more digs than the Seminoles in the first set, FSU set the pace by hitting .400 with 14 kills and only two errors, and sent the ball back to Duke’s side more often to let them make their own errors.
Set 2 – FSU 25, DU 22
Florida State carried over the momentum it gained in the first set and started off strong in the beginning of the second set, letting Duke stay close but
holding the lead over the opponent until the end. A more consistent defensive effort by the Seminoles let the offense run tougher plays, and four total blocks slowed the Blue Devils’ front row.
FSU hit .395 in the set, led by Ambrose’s six kills and fueled by Burkert’s eight assists.
Set 3 – FSU 25, DU 19
An errorless set helped Florida State close out the sweep, as the
Seminoles hit .514 with 19 kills, and didn’t earn one attack, service or blocking error in the set. The ball was set to Caffrey 14 times while she put down seven of them, but Knuth led the front row
with a .800 hitting percentage (four kills on five attacks).
A well-distributed defensive effort saw 16 digs, setting the offense up for 37 total attacks in the set. The Seminoles’ kill leader of the night, Ambrose, finished it off with a pair of back-to-back kills to end the sweep.

Volleyball Sweeps ACC Opening Weekend with Rout of Wake Forest.
The Seminoles shutout both opponents in the first weekend of ACC play for the
tenth-straight season; Caffrey stayed perfect on offense against the Demon Deacons.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team (6-6, 2-0 ACC) stayed perfect in the first weekend of the conference season, sweeping Wake Forest (5-9, 0-2 ACC) on Sunday afternoon (9/23).
The Seminoles both outhit the Demon Deacons and earned more total blocks than their opponent to stay ahead throughout the match. All six of Florida State’s wins this season have come in straight sets, and FSU is now 5-2 when outhitting its opponent and 5-3 when earning more total blocks.
Junior outside hitter Payton Caffrey put on a show against Wake Forest, hitting .600 with 18 kills and not one error for the first time this season, while adding on three aces, seven digs and three blocks (one solo). The Seminoles’ second leading point scorer of the match was sophomore middle blocker Taryn Knuth, who put up six blocks (one solo) and followed Caffrey with nine kills on 16 attacks (.500).
This marks the 10th consecutive season Florida State went 2-0 in its conference opening weekend, and the first time since 2014 the Seminoles swept both matches in the first weekend of ACC play.
Florida State now heads on its first road trip of the conference season, taking on Virginia in Charlottesville on Friday, and heading to No. 9 Pitt on Sunday. The Cavaliers sit at the bottom of the ACC with a 4-8, 0-2 ACC record, while the Panthers lead the conference as the only undefeated program (13-0, 2-0 ACC).
Set 1 – FSU 25, WF 17
The Seminoles took an early lead in
the set with a 4-0 run to open the match, with Caffrey recording a pair of kills, a solo block and an assisted block to aid in three of FSU’s first four points. Wake Forest’s offense came together as
the set went on, and the Demon Deacons were able to tie it up at 9-all.
A tougher defensive effort from the Seminoles helped the offense pick up more points to take the lead, and an ace from Caffrey finished off a 3-1 run by FSU to win the set.
Set 2 – FSU 25, WF 15
Wake Forest picked up the first point in the set, but back-to-back aces for Caffrey early on fueled a
5-0 run by FSU to gain the lead. The set was a game of aces and errors, as FSU’s two aces from Caffrey was offset by two service errors from the Seminoles and three errors from Wake Forest.
Four blocks from the Seminoles and a consistent back row defensive effort held the Demon Deacons to a -.027 hitting percentage in the set.
Set 3 – FSU 28, WF 26
The third set proved to
be the closest, as the set saw 17 tied scores and nine lead changes. The Deacs jumped out to an early lead, but Florida State pushed to tie up the score at 8-8 with a solo block from Knuth.
The Seminoles used five total blocks to keep Wake Forest’s hitting percentage down, while 20 digs from the back row set up the team for 19 digs and only three unforced errors.
FSU saw match point three times as errors on the Seminoles’ side of the net kept them from closing out the final set. Eventually it was a pair of kills from Caffrey and Ell that helped FSU take the set and finish off the sweep.

Volleyball Earns Seventh Sweep in Straight-Set win over Virginia.
The Seminoles outhit UVA to earn their 11th consecutive win over the Cavaliers;
all seven of FSU’s wins this season have come in straight sets.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Florida State volleyball team (7-6, 3-0 ACC) took down Virginia (4-9, 0-3 ACC) on Friday evening (9/28), taking down the Cavaliers on the road in straight sets.
The Seminoles both outhit their opponent and used more total blocks to keep Virginia from taking a set. The Cavaliers kept both of the final sets close and even held an advantage over FSU at times, but reducing errors and staying strong on defense helped the Seminoles’ offense finish out sets.
FSU now has seven wins this season, all of which have come in straight sets. The Seminoles have hit above .300 in all of their wins so far.
Florida State now heads to Pittsburgh to take on the No. 8 Panthers on Sunday (9/30). Pitt is still undefeated this season after sweeping Miami on Friday night, moving to a program record 14-0 start. This will be the first time in program history the Seminoles will face a ranked Panthers team.
Set 1 – FSU 25, UVA 19
The first set started off close with five tied scores, but FSU was able to pull into the lead with a 6-1 run after the 7-all mark. Redshirt
senior Ashley Murray led both teams with four kills in the set, while sophomore Taryn Knuth picked up both a solo block and an assisted block.
The Cavs earned more total blocks than the Seminoles, but plays at the right time from the Seminoles and a tough defensive effort held Virginia to just .054 hitting in the set.
Set 2 – FSU 25, UVA 23
The Seminoles started the set
strong, cutting down on errors and picking up more total blocks in the set than the opponent. While FSU appeared to dominate in the beginning of the set, Virginia proved to be tough competition, using
a stronger offensive effort to keep the score close.
Just as it looked like Florida State would run away with the set, Virginia went on a 5-0 run to close FSU’s lead to 19-18, and then tied it up at 20-20 with another service error and an ace. FSU pulled into the lead again, but Virginia tied it up at 23-all, where Florida State finished it off with a kill from Caffrey.
Set 3 – FSU
25, UVA 21
A scrappy Virginia defense kept the ball in play to give the Cavaliers more chances to attack, giving them an early lead in the set. While the Seminoles were able to tie it up
at 6-all and 7-all, Virginia once again took a lead that it held throughout the first half of the set.
Florida State’s offense came together to keep Virginia down and regain the lead. While UVA held the Seminoles at set point for three points, a kill from Adrian Ell off of the Cavaliers’ block finished off the sweep.

Volleyball Falls in Four to No. 8 Pitt for First Conference Loss.
The Seminoles move to a 3-1 ACC record before returning home to host NC State
and UNC.
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Florida State volleyball team (7-7, 3-1 ACC) was faced with tough competition on Sunday afternoon, falling in four sets to No. 8 Pitt (15-0, 4-0 ACC) on the road. The Seminoles saw 15 blocks in the match to tie the team’s season record, but it wasn’t enough to hold the conference’s top team.
While the Seminoles were able to hold the Panthers to under .300 hitting, errors on FSU’s side and a number of forced errors from Pitt helped the Panthers stay ahead to close out the final three sets in the match.
“I thought we played pretty well in the first set, but our offense really broke down during the match,” said head coach Chris Poole. “We now see what the top team in the conference looks like, and we need to get to work in our training. We can improve, we just need to get better at all the little things.”
Both teams came into Sunday’s match undefeated, with each sweeping all of its first three conference opponents. Florida State handed Pitt its first set loss of the conference season in the first set, while Pitt did the same to the Seminoles in the second set.
Sophomore middle blocker Taryn Knuth was the only Seminole to earn double-digit kills, putting down 12 kills on 25 attacks (.360) and adding on four blocks. Junior outside hitter Payton Caffrey led the team with nine blocks, while redshirt senior outside hitter Christina Ambrose saw two solo blocks. Redshirt freshman Adrian Ell led the team with 15 assists, while senior libero Kelsey Wicinski led the back row with 16 digs.
Set 1 – FSU 25, Pitt
21
Florida State jumped ahead to take an early lead in the set, but Pitt kept it close and eventually took back the lead with a tough defensive effort at the net. A tough push on offense
helped the Seminoles stay in it, and a .300 hitting percentage in the set helped FSU stay within only a few points of the Panthers.
FSU went on a 4-0 run to tie it up at 18-all, and earned the next two to take a 20-18 lead.
A kill from Knuth gave FSU set point, and another deep corner kill from the sophomore middle blocker helped the Seminoles take the first set.
Set 2 – Pitt 25, FSU
20
Unforced errors on both sides of the net decided most of the first few points in the second set, but it was a tougher effort from Pitt that carried the set from there.
The Seminoles saw a turning point midway through the set as a kill and a solo block from Ambrose gave FSU some momentum, and the Seminoles were able to close Pitt’s lead to just five points. Back-to-back assisted blocks from Caffrey slowed the Panthers, but UP was able to close it out to tie up the match 1-1.
Set 3 – Pitt 25, FSU 13
Knuth picked up a pair of kills to start it off, but once
again the Panthers determined most of the points in the beginning of the set. Pitt was able to find the floor for more kills in the set, and the Seminoles’ two blocks and six digs wasn’t enough to
slow them down once they gained the lead.
While FSU looked for a late run to hold off Pitt from taking an advantage in the set, the Panthers went 10-2 at the end of the set to close it out.
Set 4 – Pitt 25, FSU 17
The Seminoles’ front line picked up four total blocks and nine kills in the final set, but a tough Pitt offense was able to put the ball down 18 times for the
best hitting percentage and the most kills it saw in all four sets.
The final set didn’t see a single lead change, as the Seminoles tied up the score at 3-all with a block from Caffrey and Murray, but the Panthers regained the lead and held it until the end.

Volleyball Earns Sweep Number Eight with Victory Over NC State.
FSU outhit the Wolfpack and used a consistent defensive effort to hold NC State to
just over .100 hitting; all eight of the Seminoles’ wins this season have come in straight sets.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team (8-7, 4-1 ACC) earned another sweep on Friday night, taking down NC State (8-7, 4-1) in straight sets. The Seminoles outhit their opponent and earned 11 total blocks in the match to sweep their opponent for the eighth time this season.
In all four of FSU’s wins in the ACC this season, they have hit above .300 and outhit their opponent, holding three of those teams to just over .100 hitting. The Seminoles have seen double-digit blocks in three conference matches this season, only three of which saw only one blocking error.
Florida State’s offense was led by junior outside hitter Payton Caffrey, who picked up 14 kills to lead both teams, and added on two blocks (one solo). FSU’s front row defensive effort was led by sophomore middle blocker Taryn Knuth, who saw eight blocks (two solo) in the match to lead the team outright in blocks for the 10th time this season.
Sophomore middle blocker Deja Williams saw a perfect offensive performance for the first time in her career, as she put down seven kills on seven total attacks (1.000). Seven kills also ties her career high record.
Set 1 – FSU 25, NCSU 17
The Seminoles saw a consistent effort at the net in the first set from early on, as
the Seminoles outhit the Wolfpack with a .400 percentage, picked up 12 kills, and used five total blocks to keep NC State hitting .000.
FSU’s offense only saw one unforced error in the set, and five players earned at least one kill without picking up an error. Taryn Knuth and Deja Williams both hit a perfect 1.000, earning two kills and three kills respectively. Payton Caffrey earned her third solo block of the season in the first set, while Danielle Pennington led the back row with four digs.
Set 2 – FSU 25, NCSU 22
While the Wolfpack cut back on attack errors in
the second set, the Seminoles picked up two blocks and held NC State back with 15 digs from nine different players in the set. While FSU’s offense stayed consistent and took more swings for more
kills, NC State’s offense was also able to come back to hit .306 in the set with 17 kills.
Caffrey found her groove in the second set, leading the team with seven kills on 12 attacks (.417). Williams also stayed perfect in the second set, picking up three kills on three attacks.
Set 3 – FSU 25, NCSU 22
The third set saw similarly efficient offensive performance from
FSU, as the Seminoles hit above .300 with 14 kills. While the offense stayed strong, it was a tough defensive effort that kept the ball in play and forced errors on the Wolfpack. FSU picked up four
blocks in the set, each of which involved Knuth (one solo, three assisted). The Seminoles also saw 11 digs in the set, which kept the Wolfpack from putting down kills.
The match ended with a pair of service errors, but the Seminoles were able to close out the final set to earn their eighth sweep of the season and fourth in conference play.

Volleyball Rallies to Take Down Heels; Reece’s No. 6 Jersey Retired in Tully.
The Seminoles’ strong defense at the net held UNC down for FSU’s
first come-from-behind win of the season.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team (9-7, 5-1 ACC) beat North Carolina (5-10, 1-5 ACC) in a four-set battle on Sunday afternoon, dropping the first set but taking the next three to claim the match.
It marked the first time this season the Seminoles were able to come back to win a set after losing a set, making this FSU’s first four-set victory of the season. The last eight of Florida State’s wins this season came in straight sets.
FSU saw a .336 hitting percentage against the Tar Heels, and has now hit above .300 in all five of its conference wins this season.
The Seminoles retired former FSU star Gabrielle Reece’s jersey prior to the match. Reece’s No. 6 jersey is the first to be retired by the Florida State volleyball program, and she is now the 26th athlete to have their number retired at FSU.
Set 1 – UNC 25, FSU 21
The Tar Heels dominated the first part of the opening set,
forcing a timeout from Florida State after gaining a 5-1 lead. UNC was able to use a strong offensive effort to keep FSU down, and they were able to hold their lead throughout the set.
While it looked like UNC would run away with the set, more consistent defense set Florida State’s offense up for a bigger presence at the net, and the Seminoles were able to hit .379 to close UNC’s gap to only a few points.
Set 2 – FSU 25, UNC 17
Florida State was able to earn the first lead in the set, although the set saw nine tie scores before the Seminoles were able to break away
after the 15-all mark. While the Tar Heels picked up three blocks to keep FSU down, a late 8-1 run from the Seminoles gave FSU set point, and an attack error from UNC gave the home team the set.
It marked the first time this season the Seminoles were able to win a set after losing a set, and the late rally gave FSU momentum heading into the third set.
Set 3 – FSU 25, UNC 14
Florida State was able to jump out to an early lead from the beginning of the third set, and the team was able to close it out with their best offensive performance of the match. The Seminoles stepped
up in the front row to pick up five total blocks led by Murray, Knuth and Burkert, and the back row saw 15 digs to hold UNC back from earning points on kills.
The Seminoles hit .462 in the set with 13 kills on 26 attacks, while their tough defense kept North Carolina to just .056 hitting in the set.
Set 4 – FSU 25, UNC 15
While the Tar Heels picked up three total blocks in
the final set to hold FSU to just below .200 hitting, the Seminoles retaliated with seven total blocks in the set, fueled by the ACC’s blocking leader, Taryn Knuth, who saw five in the set (two
solo).
FSU jumped out to an early lead once again and never let UNC come close. While errors plagued the Tar Heels at the end of the set, FSU was able to stay consistent and close out the set for its first come-from-behind win of the season.

Volleyball Edges Out Boston College in Four-Set Victory.
The Seminoles fought a close battle with the Eagles, but outhit Boston College to take
three sets off of them on the road.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Florida State volleyball team (10-7, 6-1 ACC) took down Boston College (12-7, 2-5 ACC) in a four-set battle on Friday night for the Seminoles’ third straight conference win.
Junior outside hitter Payton Caffrey led both teams with 17 kills, hitting .421 with only one error on 38 attacks. Sophomore middle blocker Taryn Knuth led both teams in offensive efficiency, hitting .438 with nine kills on 16 attacks. Knuth still leads the ACC with 1.56 blocks per set this season after earning five total blocks on Friday night.
The Seminoles conclude their road trip on Sunday afternoon in Syracuse. Both teams are tied for third in the conference with a 6-1 ACC record following Friday’s round of conference play.
Set
1 – FSU 25, BC 21
FSU held the lead from early on, but Boston College’s tough offense helped them tie it up for the third time at 12-all. While the Seminoles never surrendered the lead
throughout the set, BC stayed close until Florida State was able to pull away at the end of the set. FSU gained its largest lead over the Eagles at 21-15 until a pair of errors from BC ended the
set.
Payton Caffrey led the offense with five kills on seven attacks, while her outside counterpart Christina Ambrose took 11 swings at the ball to put down three kills. Wicisnki held down the back row with eight digs to keep the ball in play on FSU’s side.
Set 2 – BC 25, FSU 22
Boston College took an early lead in the second set, going on a 5-0 run to lead FSU 6-2 and force
a timeout from the Seminoles. The Eagles took the next point, but a kill off of a slide from Ashley Murray snapped the six-point run.
The set was tied nine times, but FSU was unable to take the lead until the 19-18 mark. The Seminoles then held the lead to be the first team to 20, but BC’s offense helped them catch up to tie up the set for the eighth time at 22-all. Three errors on FSU’s side ended the set and tied up the match at one game each.
Set 3 – FSU 25, BC 21
The Seminoles took an early lead coming out of intermission, but another consistent offensive
effort from the Eagles helped keep the set tight. After taking their first lead at 8-7, the set stayed close and saw seven more tied scores, but the Seminoles never surrendered the lead.
The third set was highlighted by more efficient offensive performance, as the Seminoles hit .317 with errorless performances by Ambrose, Murray and Caffrey.
Set 4 – FSU 25, BC 17
FSU’s
first three points in the set came off of kills from Caffrey, but Boston College kept it close with a large presence at the net to put down more kills than the Seminoles early in the set. Caffrey went
on to hit .500 in the set with five kills on 10 attacks, supported by five total blocks from Knuth (one solo), Brim and Burkert to hold the Eagles back from gaining the lead.
A kill on a slide from Knuth gave Florida State match point, but Boston College slowed the Seminoles with another kill. FSU finished it off with a block on the right side by Burkert and Mariah Brim for FSU’s ninth block of the match.

Volleyball Earns Come-From-Behind Win in Syracuse.
FSU was able to come back from a two-point deficit to take down the Orange; the Seminoles take
third place in the ACC.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Florida State volleyball team (11-7, 7-1 ACC) saw its first come-from-behind win of the season on Sunday afternoon, as the team came back from an 0-2 deficit to take down Syracuse (10-6, 6-2 ACC) on the road in a battle for third place in the conference.
Sunday’s victory marked FSU’s first five-set win after losing the first two sets since the Seminoles took down No. 11 Florida in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2016. This comes just a week after Florida State earned its first victory after losing a set, when the team took down North Carolina in three sets at home.
“That was the best match we have played in two seasons,” said head coach Chris Poole. “This is what I have been expecting from our team. I think we showed a lot of heart and relentless pursuit to win the match and it paid off. It was great to see all of them battle and we all got stronger as the match was played.”
The match was highlighted by a stellar offensive performance by the Seminoles, as the team saw a season-high 72 kills and 179 attacks for a .291 hitting percentage. It was the first time this season FSU saw four players earn double-digit kills, while two players in the match (Caffrey and SU’s Shemanova) saw more than 20 kills each.
The Seminoles sit in third place in the ACC, behind undefeated Pitt and Louisville, who are both tied for first in the conference. FSU returns home next weekend to host Georgia Tech and Clemson, two teams sitting below .500 in the conference.
Set 1 – SU 25, FSU 23
The Orange took an early lead in the opening set, but Florida State was able to tie up the score five times before taking the lead at the 8-7 mark. The set continued to go back and forth as FSU tried
to hold onto a lead over the Orange, but Syracuse was able to hold the edge over the Seminoles to close out the set.
Sophomore middle blocker Taryn Knuth led the Seminoles with five kills, earned on only six attacks without a single error for a .833 hitting percentage. Knuth also saw two blocks (one solo) in the opening set, while redshirt freshman Mariah Brim also picked up two blocks in the set.
Set 2 – SU 26, FSU 24
While the Seminoles used an increased offensive presence in the beginning of the second set, it wasn’t enough to hold off the Orange from maintaining
the lead throughout the set. Syracuse’s 14 kills in the set propelled them to a larger lead over FSU than in the first set, but reduced errors on Florida State’s side of the net helped the Seminoles
close the gap towards the end.
After holding the Orange at set point, Syracuse was able to pick up two back-to-back points to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Senior setter Brianne Burkert led the set with four kills on five attacks (.800), and added on six assists and two digs.
Set 3 – FSU 25, SU 16
Florida State came out swinging after intermission to claim the first five
points in the set, and the Seminoles were able to hold at least a two-point lead throughout the remainder of the set. Three blocks, all involving Knuth, held the Orange below .100 hitting throughout
the set, while the Seminoles hit above .300 despite taking fewer swings on the ball than their opponent.
An increased offensive efficiency in the set helped the Seminoles hold the edge over the Orange, while three total blocks and 20 digs from FSU kept Syracuse behind. Caffrey found her groove in the third set, hitting .667 with six kills and no errors on nine attacks to lead both teams.
Set 4 – FSU 25, SU 18
Syracuse took the lead in the beginning of the fourth set, but Florida State was able to catch up to tie the set at 10-all, and then take their first lead at
the 11-10 mark. After the Seminoles held the lead, SU was able to catch up twice but was never able to gain the lead.
FSU outhit Syracuse once again in the fourth set, putting down five more kills on five fewer attacks than the Orange saw in the set.
Set 5 – FSU 15, SU 12
The fifth set proved to be a close battle from the beginning, as the Seminoles took the first lead at
2-1, but from there the set saw five tie scores. Syracuse saw their only lead at the 4-3 mark, but FSU regained the lead and never gave it up after a kill from Knuth brought the score to 6-5 FSU.
The Seminoles hit .333 in the deciding set to outhit their opponent for the third straight set. The offense was led by Caffrey’s five kills (.273) and by a 1.000 hitting performance by Knuth, who put down three kills on three attacks.

Volleyball Holds Off Late Rally to Top Tech.
FSU outhit the Yellow Jackets in a four-set decision; the Seminoles have taken the last seven matches
in the series.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team (12-7, 8-1 ACC) took down Georgia Tech (13-9, 2-7 ACC) on Friday night in a close four-set battle. The Seminoles earned double-digit blocks for the 11th time this season and outhit their opponent for the 14th time to remain the only one-loss team in the ACC.
The Seminoles have now claimed the last seven matches in the series against the Yellow Jackets, with Friday night’s match marking the first four-set decision in that stretch.
The offensive effort was once again led by junior outside hitter Payton Caffrey, who put down 19 kills on 57 attacks. Her counterpart, redshirt senior Christina Ambrose, saw a .407 attack percentage with 13 kills for her fifth game of the season hitting above .400.
On defense, Florida State was led by sophomore middle blocker Taryn Knuth in the front row, as she put down six total blocks (one solo). Senior libero Kelsey Wicinski saw her fourth consecutive match with more than 20 kills as she picked up 23 on Friday night.
Redshirt senior setter Adrian Ell earned her fourth double-double of the season, and second in only two weeks, with 22 assists and 14 digs in the match.
The Seminoles will host Clemson on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers 11-11 (2-7 ACC) most recently swept Miami in Coral Gables on Friday night for the Hurricane’s third conference loss this season.
Set 1 – FSU 25, GT 21
The opening set started out close between both teams, as the score went back and forth throughout the set. Georgia Tech’s tough defensive
presence at the net kept FSU’s offense down, but the Seminoles were eventually able to take more swings to put down more kills to gain an edge in the set.
While the Yellow Jackets took the first point, the set saw eight tie scores and three lead changes until FSU was able to hold the lead after a block from Ambrose and Knuth gave the Seminoles a 15-14 lead. From there, an increased offensive presence helped Florida State close out the first set for a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set 2 – GT 25, FSU 23
Georgia Tech jumped out to an early lead in the second set, but a 5-1 run
for the Seminoles helped FSU jump out to as much as a 5-3 lead over Tech. From there, the set saw five tied scores and four lead changes. After four consecutive points helped the Jackets gain a 13-11
lead over FSU, Georgia Tech was able to hold the lead until the end to tie up the match at 1-1.
Both teams saw their most efficient offensive performance in the second set, as the Yellow Jackets hit .367 with a match-high 16 kills on their fewest attacks (30), while the Seminoles hit .40 with 14 kills on only 25 attacks.
Set 3 – FSU 25, GT 20
The Seminoles came out of
intermission with the first three points in the set, and held the lead until the end. FSU never let the Yellow Jackets catch up or tie the score, and the Seminoles held at least a three-point edge
over their opponent throughout the set.
An improved defensive performance on Florida State’s side of the net helped to slow Georgia Tech’s offense, as the Yellow Jackets saw more attempts but were unable to put down as many kills in the third set. Three total blocks from five different FSU players helped to keep Tech back, while 22 total digs (led by Wicinski’s 10) prevented the opponent from putting the ball down.
Set 4 – FSU 25, GT 23
FSU once again took the lead in the set and never handed it over, as the Seminoles earned the first three points of the final set on
two aces from Brianne Burkert and a kill from Caffrey. While the Seminoles saw a lower hitting percentage in the fourth set and picked up only one block, FSU’s back row kept the ball in play to let GT
make its own errors.
Just went it appeared FSU would run away with the final set, Tech was able to rally to go 10-2 in the end of the set to jump up from a nine-point deficit to only one point at FSU’s match point before the Seminoles closed out the set.

Volleyball Goes Six Straight with Win Over Clemson.
The Seminoles now sit in a tie for second place in the ACC behind undefeated Pitt.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team (13-7, 9-1 ACC) picked up another four-set win on Sunday afternoon, winning three straight sets to take down Clemson (11-12, 2-8 ACC).
The Seminoles have now won six straight matches, and with No. 21 Louisville’s loss to No. 6 Pitt on Sunday, FSU is now tied with the Cardinals for second place in the conference.
Clemson’s tough hitting and serving efforts kept the Seminoles off-balance throughout the match, but an even more consistent attack and an oppressive blocking effort helped keep Florida State ahead of the Tigers. Clemson was able to edge out a close 26-24 win in the first set, but the Seminoles fought back to take the next three for the match.
“I’m really happy with the two wins this weekend, but disappointed in the way we finished both matches,” said head coach Chris Poole. “We have to do a better job of focusing through the entire match until the last whistle is blown.”
Despite reducing offensive errors on their side of the net and keeping a consisted defensive presence in the front row, Clemson was able to put down a number of kills at the right times to keep FSU from running away with the match.
“We had some great performances over the weekend, and it is good to see us progress in different parts of our game. The key for us moving forward is being consistent and continuing to put pressure on the opponent with our offense and the block.”
Set 1 – CU 26, FSU 24
FSU jumped out to a quick start in the opening set, but a tough offensive effort from
Clemson proved to be a threat to the Seminoles from early on. The Seminoles seemed to struggle with serve receive and defending against Clemson’s large offensive presence, and the Tigers grabbed the
lead from early on, but Florida State was able to take it back at the 20-19 mark.
At FSU’s set point (24-22), the Tigers came back with four straight points on a number of errors by the Seminoles to take the opening set for a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set 2 – FSU 25, CU 11
The Seminoles started off strong in the beginning of the second set, going 8-0 behind a tough offensive
effort, two aces from Ambrose and a block from Knuth/Brim. Every one of the Seminoles’ attacks hit the floor through the first 11 points in the set, as FSU hit 1.000 with six kills on six attacks
until the 10-2 mark.
Florida State continued to shut down the Tigers throughout the set, and held Clemson to only 11 points in the set. It marked the fewest points CU has scored in a 25-point set this season, and the fewest an opponent has earned against the Seminoles this season in a 25-point set.
Set 3 – FSU 25, CU 17
Three errors on Clemson’s side of the net helped the
Seminoles jump out to another quick lead in the set, but the Tigers kept the set tight in the beginning with a tough offensive presence. FSU handled its own side of the net, earning only one unforced
error on offense and giving up only one Ace for CU.
By using five total blocks and a more consistent offensive performance, the Seminoles were able to grab the lead at the 8-7 mark and hold it until the end. FSU held the Tigers to just a -.068 hitting percentage in the set.
Set 4 – FSU 25, CU 23
The Seminoles took the first point in the set with a block from Caffrey and
Tiana Jackson, the team’s ninth of the match. From there, both teams proved to be tough competition for one another, and the set saw ten tie scores and six lead changes – the most of any set.
FSU held the lead after the 14-13 mark, and reached set point at 24-16 with a block from Brim and Murray. From there, the Tigers earned seven straight points, earning all three of their total blocks in that stretch before a kill from Brianne Burkert finished it off.

Volleyball Edged by Canes in Five.
The Seminoles picked up 14 blocks and held Miami to under .200 hitting, but fell in five close sets on the
road.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team (13-8, 9-2 ACC) fought a tough battle against in-state conference rival Miami (12-6, 8-3 ACC) on Wednesday, but fell in five sets on the Hurricanes’ home court.
The Seminoles and the Hurricanes battled in a high-scoring, close and nearly three-hour match, with Miami taking the first, fourth and fifth sets to take the match.
Junior outside hitter Payton Caffrey saw her 30th career double-double in the match, picking up 18 kills and 10 digs. She led the Seminoles in kills and total attacks (51), and added on a service ace and four total blocks (two solo).
Senior libero Kelsey Wicinski saw 26 digs in the match, marking her fifth 20-dig outing in the team’s last six matches.
Set 1 – UM 30, FSU 28
The Canes took the first two points in the set and put pressure on the Seminoles at the net early on. A tough offensive pressure created chaos in the middle of the court on FSU’s side, but tough
blocking defense from the Seminoles kept the Canes down and helped the set stay close.
Miami was the first to reach set point at 24-23, but a kill from Caffrey and a block from Ell and Murray gave FSU the second set point. From there, both teams traded kills and attack errors until UM was able to pull out the final two points to take the set.
Set 2 – FSU 25, UM 23
Errors
dominated the first 20 points in the set and kept each team within only two points of the other. A 3-0 run from FSU tied it up at 15-all, and another 4-0 run for the Seminoles – all from errors on
Miami’s side – helped FSU take the lead and go up by three at the 19-16 mark.
The remainder of the set saw an offensive standoff between the two teams, with Miami picking up five kills to go against FSU’s’ four to keep the set tight. In the end, a service error from the Canes gave Florida State set point, a kill from UM put them within one, and a kill from Caffrey closed out the set to tie up the match 1-1.
Set 3 – FSU 25, UM 22
A cleaner defensive performance by the Seminoles kept FSU close to Miami, and a 4-0 run helped Florida State take the lead at 9-6 to
force a timeout from UM. A consistently tough block from FSU kept Miami’s hitting percentage down, and a number of attack errors from the Canes helped keep the Seminoles in the lead.
Four total errors on both sides held FSU back from reaching set point, until a kill from Murray brought FSU within a point of taking the set. A kill on a slide from Knuth finished it off to give the Seminoles a 2-1 lead in the match.
Set 4 – UM 25, FSU 18
After the Hurricanes took the lead at the 3-2 mark, FSU was unable to come back to regain the lead. After a kill from Knuth put FSU within two at 8-6, the Canes went on a 10-0 run before a kill down the middle from Murray was able to snap the streak at the 18-7 mark.
From there, FSU went on a 12-4 run to close Miami’s lead to 22-18, but three consecutive points on a Canes’ kill, a Seminoles’ service error and a block for Miami handed them the set to tie up the match at 2-2.
Set 5 – UM 19, FSU 17
Miami’s Lukianova and FSU’s Knuth traded kills back and forth to control the first five points in the set, and a more consistent offensive presence for the Seminoles helped to keep the set tight.
Florida State was the first to eight points, and they held at least a one-point lead until Miami tied the score at 12-all.
Back-to-back kills from Caffrey brought the Seminoles to the first match point of the set, and from there both teams saw a combined six match points. At 17-16 UM a missed call had Miami winning the match, but the call was overturned. From there, the Canes won the last two points to take the set and the match.

Volleyball Routs Hokies in Three.
The Seminoles move back into a tie for second place in the ACC with No. 22 Louisville.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In the team’s fifth conference sweep of the season, Florida State (14-8, 10-2 ACC) shut out Virginia Tech (13-11, 4-8 ACC) on Sunday to remain undefeated against the Hokies in Tallahassee.
“Every match we play is crucial at this point in the season,” said head coach Chris Poole. “We have let matches slip away from us this season and we are trying to learn to be more focused and disciplined as a team.”
With FSU’s win against the Hokies and a pair of losses for No. 5 Pitt and No. 22 Louisville, the Seminoles move into a tie for second in the conference with the Cardinals – a team FSU will meet on the road next weekend.
“It was good to win in three today, and we need to play up to our fullest potential this coming weekend to get a win on the road,” Poole said.
Florida State saw double-digit blocks for the fifth consecutive match, led by Taryn Knuth’s nine assisted blocks. Ashley Murray picked up the Seminoles’ lone solo block in the match, all while recording the best hitting percentage on the team (.615) with eight kills on 13 attacks without a single error.
Two other offensive players saw errorless performances at the net, as Christina Ambrose and Tiana Jackson added to the Seminoles’ 40 kills in the match.
The Seminoles held the Hokies to just .097 hitting on Sunday afternoon; it is the lowest percentage FSU has held a conference team to this season, and the second lowest it has held any team to since VCU hit .096 (9/7).
Set 1 – FSU 25, VT 20
The Seminoles controlled of the first three points of a 5-0 run that started
off the set, with a kill and an ace from Christina Ambrose and a block from Knuth and Brim. From there, FSU was able to maintain the lead by reducing unforced errors to counteract a tough Hokies
offense.
After the Seminoles reached 20, Virginia Tech went on a 3-0 run to slow down FSU’s run, but a consistent offensive presence and a final block from Ell and Murray finished it off to give FSU a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set 2 – FSU 25, VT 17
The second set started off differently than the first, with the Hokies controlling most of the first eight points in the set
with a number of kills and unforced errors to hold the lead. A kill from Murray on a slide helped FSU’s offense kick in, and the Seminoles were able to outhit the Hokies in the set for the second
time.
A kill from Knuth helped FSU tie it up at 10-all, and a solo block from Murray and an ace from Taylor Roberts helped the Seminoles secure the lead for the first time in the set. A 6-2 run helped FSU reach 20, but a number of unforced errors slowed the Seminoles down from closing out the set. A tougher defensive presence helped FSU’s offense push harder to get points and finish the set.
Set 3 – FSU 25, VT 23
The Hokies once again took an early lead in the set coming out of intermission, holding that lead throughout the first half of the set. The Seminoles
stayed close and tied up the set nine times, until a kill from Murray tied it up at 16-all, and back-to-back blocks from Knuth, Ambrose and Jackson gave the Seminoles a lead they were able to hold
until the end.
The Seminoles saw only one unforced attacking error and two service errors in the set, helping them hit above .300 for the third straight set. With five blocks and 19 digs, the Seminoles were able to hold the Hokies to under .200 hitting for the third time.

Volleyball Fights off Irish in Close Four-Set Battle.
The Seminoles held off a late rally from Notre Dame for a big comeback win in the fourth
set; FSU is tied with Louisville for second place in the conference.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Florida State volleyball team (15-8, 11-2 ACC) took down Notre Dame (14-9, 8-5 ACC) in four sets on the road on Friday night. The Seminoles picked up 14 blocks and outhit the Fighting Irish for FSU’s 11th conference win of the season.
Florida State held a 2-0 advantage heading into intermission, but had to fight off a tough comeback from Notre Dame. After losing the third set and trailing throughout the fourth set, the Seminoles were able to fight off the Irish to close out the match.
With FSU’s win over Notre Dame and No. 24 Louisville’s win against Miami on Friday, the two teams will face off in a battle for second place in the ACC on Sunday in Louisville. The Cardinals held second place in the conference before losing to Syracuse at home last weekend.
Junior outside hitter Payton Caffrey saw 20 kills in just the first three sets alone on Friday night, and finished with a match-leading 24 kills and a .367 hitting percentage. She added on eight digs, an ace and an assisted block to earn 25 of FSU’s points.
Sophomore middle blocker Taryn Knuth saw double-digit blocks for just the second time this season, earning 10 blocks (one solo) on Friday night. Knuth has now earned five or more blocks in nine straight matches, and has led the Seminoles’ front row defense in 19 matches this season.
Set 1 – FSU 25, ND 23
A more consistent offensive presence from FSU put the Seminoles in the lead from early on, but Notre Dame saw an upswing in momentum
that kept the opening set tight. The Irish eventually tied it up for the first time at 16-all, but a huge blocking effort from Knuth and a number of errors from Notre Dame helped the Seminoles regain
the lead.
Although the Irish controlled most of the points in the second half of the set, unforced errors helped the Seminoles hold the lead throughout the remainder of the set. Florida State’s final three points all came from kills from Caffrey, as she finished the set leading both teams with a .400 hitting percentage.
Set 2 – FSU 25, ND 16
The second set stayed close,
as neither team was able to gain more than a two-point lead until the Seminoles saw a 6-0 run – fueled by three straight kills from Caffrey and back-to-back aces from Taylor Roberts – gave FSU a 15-9
lead.
The second set was fittingly ended with another kill for Caffrey, as she led both teams with 14 kills and a .462 hitting percentage through the first two sets.
Set 3 – ND 25, FSU

Notre Dame started off the set with a 4-0 run, and went on to control the first seven points in the set until a kill from Caffrey gave FSU its first earned point at the 6-2 Irish mark.
Notre Dame was able to hold the lead throughout the set, but FSU was able to stay in the match and go on a 3-0 run to force a timeout from the home team at their 22-19 mark.
The Seminoles went on to get the next point to cap off a 4-0 run, and saw seven of the last ten points in the set. In the end, Notre Dame was able to close it out to cut FSU’s lead in the match to 2-1.
Set 4 – FSU
29, ND 27
Another quick start from Notre Dame gave them an early 4-0 lead, and a tough offensive effort by the Irish helped them hold that lead and force a timeout from Florida State at
the 11-5 mark. Coming out of the timeout, FSU picked up some momentum to slow down the Irish and cut their lead to as little as three points.
The Seminoles kept pushing back, and back-to-back kills from Ambrose closed out a 4-0 run and tied things up at 19-all. Notre Dame held on to the lead, but the set saw five more tied scores before FSU was able to gain the lead for the first set point at 25-24. The momentum swung back and forth before Caffrey was able to once again put down two kills to finish off the match.

Volleyball Upsets No. 24 Louisville in Four-Set Road Battle.
Florida State won the battle for second place in the conference against the
Cardinals, picking up the team’s first ranked win since 2016.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Florida State volleyball team (16-8, 12-2 ACC) finally got what it has been looking for since the 2016 NCAA Tournament – a victory over an AVCA Top-25 program. After dominating the first two sets against the No. 24 Cardinals on Sunday, FSU was able to stay ahead and take down Louisville in four sets to close out a challenging road trip.
“I’m so proud of these young ladies,” said head coach Chris Poole. “They have continued to work hard and have improved as the season progresses.”
With the Cardinals, the Seminoles and the Fighting Irish sitting in the top 50 in the RPI, Florida State’s chances for its tenth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance are still high after FSU took down both of them on the road.
“There was a lot of disappointment in letting Miami come back on us on our last road trip after being in control of the match,” Poole said. “This is one of the tougher road trips and it was a total team effort to fight through both matches.”
FSU keeps its hopes of an ACC Championship alive with Sunday’s win, as the Seminoles now take second place behind No. 10 Pitt. By winning out the season and defeating the Panthers in Tallahassee next week, the Seminoles have a shot at either an outright or co-championship.
Florida State has taken on six ranked opponents this season, three of which were ranked in the AVCA Top-10. Despite being outhit by ranked teams, the Seminoles have earned more blocks than their opponents in those ranked matches, picking up a combined 63 total blocks (14 solo). Their ranked opponents have earned a combined 58 total blocks (11 solo) for 2.4 blocks per set (FSU has 2.6).
Of the eight sets the Seminoles saw this weekend, six of them were finished off with a kill from junior outside hitter Payton Caffrey. With her season-high 28 kills against the Cardinals, Caffrey finished the weekend with 52 kills (good for 6.5 kills per set).
A quieter force on the net, sophomore middle blocker Taryn Knuth also had an impressive weekend. The Johnston, Iowa native saw 20 total blocks (four solo), good for 2.50 blocks per set. On offense, Knuth saw 18 kills on 49 attacks for a .204 hitting percentage.
Redshirt senior Ashley Murray led both teams in hitting percentage (with 10 or more attacks) on Sunday, hitting .462 with seven kills.
In the back row, senior libero Kelsey Wicinski saw her seventh 20-dig outing of the season, supporting the offense with a match-leading 21 digs. As the only Seminole with double-digit digs, Wicinski also saw her 19th match with 10+ digs, and fourth in a row.
Set 1 – FSU 27, UL 25
After jumping out to an early start, the Seminoles were able to hold the lead with
a strong offensive presence on the outside. A more consistent attack held the Seminoles in the lead, but FSU’s defense couldn’t keep up with the Cardinals’ front line, helping Louisville tie up the
set at the 12-all mark.
From there, the set saw six more tied scores, but neither team was able to gain more than a one-point lead until Tiana Jackson’s first kill of the match gave FSU a 20-18 lead. The Cardinals continued to use a tough offensive effort to hold the Seminoles down, holding FSU at set point to earn their own at 25-24. Caffrey went on a run at the end, picking up three straight kills to finish off the set and give FSU a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set 2 – FSU 25, UL 16
The Seminoles used their momentum from the first and brought it into the second,
starting off on a 4-0 run before and unforced error handed over the ball. FSU held the lead throughout the set, but surrendered points with their own errors in the first half.
Holding the Cardinals to just .172 hitting, Florida State’s consistent defense was able to set up the Seminoles’ offense for 14 kills in the set. A 4-0 run from FSU put the Seminoles just two points away from taking the set and for the fifth time over the weekend, FSU finished off another set with a kill on the outside from Caffrey.
Set 3 – UL 25, FSU 21
Florida State’s first four points in the
set came from kills on the outside from Ambrose and Caffrey, helping FSU come back and close Louisville’s early set lead. While Louisville’s defense struggled to hold off FSU’s offense, it was the
Cardinals’ tough offense on the outside and a number of errors from Florida State that kept Louisville in the lead throughout the set.
After the Cardinals reached set point at 24-17, FSU went on a 3-0 run to reach 20 points and sent Louisville into a timeout. Another kill from Caffrey brought UL’s lead to 24-21, but a final kill from the Cardinals closed FSU’s lead in the match to 2-1.
Set 4 – FSU 25, UL 23
The Seminoles took the lead early in the fourth set, starting it off with Ambrose’s ninth kill of the match and an ace from Taylor Roberts. A consistent attack
highlighted the beginning of the set for the Seminoles, but giving the ball to the Cardinals more often gave UL more chances of running plays that earned points.
FSU was able to regain the lead at the 15-14 mark, a lead the Seminoles held throughout the set. After Florida State’s timeout at their 22-19 lead, both teams went 3-3 to close out the match, with Caffrey once again punctuating the final set with a kill from the outside.

Defense Shines in Volleyball’s Comeback Win Over Irish.
After losing the first two sets, the Seminoles came back to dominate the last three sets
to hold second place in the conference.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team (17-8, 13-2 ACC) proved its place at the top of the conference on Sunday afternoon, taking down Notre Dame (15-11, 9-7 ACC) in a five-set comeback win in Tully Gym.
While FSU’s seemingly unstoppable offense has been the center of attention this season, the Seminoles proved to be a suppressing force on defense on Sunday, holding a tough Notre Dame front line to just over .100 hitting through five sets.
Sunday’s win sets up an important matchup for Florida State’s final home match on Friday, Nov. 16, as the Seminoles host a top-10 Pitt team. The Panthers have only one loss this season overall, when No. 5 Pitt lost to Duke in four sets on the road last month. A win over the Panthers will give FSU a chance to take a share of the ACC title this season, while a loss could set up Pitt for the outright ACC Championship title.
Florida State’s defense shined in the match, picking up a season-high 95 digs in the match and the team’s 19th double-digit blocking effort of the season. When the Seminoles defense stepped up in the fourth and fifth sets, Notre Dame was unable to hit above .100 and couldn’t use the offensive effort the team has dominated their opponents with this season.
Senior libero Kelsey Wicinski saw a career-high 34 digs in the match, while freshman Taylor Roberts began making her case to take over as libero next season, picking up 20 digs and adding on three assists in the match. Sophomore Taryn Knuth held onto her spot as the ACC’s blocking leader, picking up eight total blocks in the match. She now has 160 total blocks this season, good for 1.68 per set, both of which lead the ACC.
Junior outside hitter Payton Caffrey continues to embrace her role as the leader of FSU’s offense, as she put down 20 kills and added on 11 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Her outside counterpart, redshirt senior Christina Ambrose, set a career high with 53 total attacks, putting down 16 of them for a .208 hitting percentage and tacking on three blocks and three digs.
Both of FSU’s setters saw impressive all-around performances, as senior leader Brianne Burkert picked up 25 assists, hit .444 with four kills on nine attacks, earned two aces, and added on six digs and a block. Redshirt freshman Adrian Ell saw 22 assists with four total blocks (three of which came in the fourth set alone), seven digs and five kills.
Set 1 – ND 25, FSU 20
The Fighting Irish held the advantage in the set
from the beginning, outhitting the Seminoles and using a stronger defensive effort to hold the lead. Notre Dame’s errors began to add up, keeping Florida State close until the Irish pulled away in the
end.
The Seminoles kept up with the Irish defensively and were able to run 34 plays on offense, but Notre Dame’s strong defensive effort prevented FSU from putting the ball down. Both teams battled back and forth, but the Seminoles were unable to catch up before the Irish closed out the first set.
Set 2 – ND 25, FSU 20
A more consistent back row defense on FSU’s side kept
the ball alive and kept Notre Dame’s hitting percentage down. A dump over the net from Adrian Ell tied up the score at 18-all, and a kill from Ambrose gave FSU its first lead at 19-18, and a block
from Knuth and Brim gave Florida State a 20-18 lead.
From there, Notre Dame let FSU make its own errors and used a stronger offensive presence to regain the lead. The Fighting Irish went 7-0 to close out the set, giving them a 2-0 lead in the match heading into intermission.
Set 3 – FSU 25, ND 23
Notre Dame started off the set with a tough offensive presence that kept
Florida State down, and the Fighting Irish was able to stay ahead on FSU’s errors. A tougher offensive effort from FSU’s pin hitters helped the Seminoles take the lead and hold it after three straight
kills from Caffrey put FSU up 16-14.
The Fighting Irish began to close FSU’s lead by running more efficient plays, but Florida State’s defense stayed strong behind nine digs from Wicinski in the set. Florida State’s last few defensive plays at the net helped them close out the set to hold off a win from Notre Dame.
Set 4 – FSU 25, ND 12
The first few points in the set
went back and forth, until Florida State saw a 5-0 scoring run to jump into the lead. That run saw two blocks from Murray/Ell, an ace from Burkert and a pair of kills from Murray and Caffrey. Despite
giving Notre Dame a few points, FSU was able to come back and go on an 8-0 scoring run, holding the Irish to .000 hitting through the first 21 total points in the set.
The Seminoles continued to dominate throughout the set, hitting .351 and using 23 digs and six total blocks to hold the Irish to just .050 hitting. Florida State kept rolling, and finished out the set with a block from Knuth and Brim and a final kill from Knuth.
Set 5 – FSU 15, ND 9
The Seminoles saw an even more consistent back row defensive effort in the final set, holding the Irish to .000 hitting
through the first half of the set. Notre Dame kept pushing on offense and swung at the ball 30 times, but 21 digs and two total blocks (with a solo block from Murray) on Florida State’s side held the
Irish to negative hitting in the set.
The Seminoles held Notre Dame to just nine points in the set, which is the fewest the Irish have seen in any set this season.

Volleyball Falls to Conference-Leader No. 10 Pitt.
The Seminoles took a set off of the Panthers, but fell to Pitt in four; FSU recognized its four
seniors in their final home match at Tully Gym.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team (17-9, 13-3 ACC) fell to No. 10 Pitt (27-1, 15-1 ACC) on Friday night, taking a set off the Panthers in a close four-set decision. With the win, Pitt claimed a share of the ACC Championship title for the second year in a row. Florida State now drops to a tie with Syracuse for second place in the conference.
If Florida State wins both of its next two matches and Pitt loses its next two, FSU will share the title with the Panthers.
Florida State saw 14 total blocks in the match to hold Pitt to just .195 hitting, the lowest the Panthers have seen since hitting .188 against Louisville earlier this season. While the Seminoles’ defense at the net stayed strong, it wasn’t enough to hold off Pitt’s top-ranked offense, as the Panthers put down 60 kills to stay ahead of Florida State.
The Seminoles recognized the team’s four seniors after the match after all four of them made an impact in their final game in Tully Gym. Senior setter Brianne Burkert saw 21 assists and seven digs, while redshirt senior Christina Ambrose put down six kills, an ace, four digs and two blocks in the match. The team’s two transfers, Ashley Murray (seven kills, three blocks) and Kelsey Wicinski (20 digs, four assists) added to the team’s four-set effort against the Panthers.
Set 1 – UP
25, FSU 22
While the Seminoles kept up with the Panthers, and even held the lead in the beginning of the set, Pitt held an advantage throughout the opening set with a more consistent
offensive presence. Florida State took more swings at the ball, but Pitt’s defense held the Seminoles back from scoring, using seven blocks and letting the Seminoles make two unforced errors to keep
their hitting percentage down.
FSU came within only a point of the Panthers at Pitt’s 19-18 and 23-22 leads, but a consistent offense on Pitt’s side helped them close out the first for a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set 2 – UP 25, FSU 21
Pitt started out with the advantage in the set once again, but the set saw five tied scores before FSU took its first lead at 10-9 with a 4-0
scoring run. Both teams went back and forth from there, but Florida State saw its last lead at the 13-12 mark before the Panthers regained the lead at 15-14 and held on to it until the end.
While
Florida State saw an improved hitting percentage in the set and kept up with Pitt on defense, it wasn’t enough to slow the Panthers as they put down 18 kills in the set. Caffrey led the Seminoles’
offense with five kills on 13 attacks, while Knuth Set 3 – FSU 25, UP 20
With a 4-0 run to start the set, the Seminoles secured the lead from the beginning. Florida State let Pitt
make its own errors, and capitalized on their inconsistencies with a stronger offensive presence and six blocks in the set. Caffrey saw her hitting percentage improve as she was able to put down three
kills early on in the set, and the Seminoles were able to gain as much as a 10-point lead over Pitt.
The Panthers’ offense began to click towards the end of the set, and a stronger effort at the net held Florida State back from running away with it. After FSU led at the 21-11 mark, the Panthers went 9-4 to close the Seminoles’ lead before a kill from Murray ended the set.
Set 4 – UP
25, FSU 19
Pitt started off strong in the fourth set, going up 10-0 before Florida State was able to score on a kill from Knuth. The Panthers held the lead with a tough offense, but a more
consistent back row on FSU’s side set up the offense to make more plays, putting down 10 kills in the set.
While FSU was able to battle back to slow Pitt’s run and close the gap to as little as three points, it wasn’t enough keep Pitt’s tough offense down. The Panthers saw their best hitting percentage in the fourth set, closing it out with the first kill of the night from Williams to take the match.

Volleyball Sweeps Tar Heels in Chapel Hill.
Florida State outhit UNC and picked up more blocks in a 3-0 road victory.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Florida State volleyball team (18-9, 14-3 ACC) earned its tenth sweep of the season on Wednesday afternoon, taking down North Carolina (8-19, 4-14 ACC) in the Tar Heels’ final match of the season. The Seminoles hit .330 with 10 total blocks in the 3-0 victory, led by an errorless offensive effort from middle blockers Taryn Knuth and Ashley Murray.
Florida State was met with a strong start from UNC in the beginning of the match, but by reducing errors at the net and keeping the ball alive from the back row, FSU was able to close out the match in three sets.
Murray and Knuth both saw seven kills in the match and hit above .400, while Murray led the team in blocks with five assisted blocks. Junior outside hitter Payton Caffrey led FSU’s offense once again, as she put down 16 kills and hit above .300, while adding on the only solo block in the match.
Set 1 – FSU 25, UNC 22
Florida State utilized an attack from the middle throughout the first half of the
opening set, and a productive blocking effort kept UNC’s hitting percentage down. While the Tar Heels held the lead from the beginning, letting the Seminoles make their own errors to earn points.
A 4-0 run helped Florida State pull back into the lead at the 21-20 mark, and the Seminoles were able to hang onto it until the end of the set by going 4-1 with three kills from Caffrey. Caffrey hit .571 in the set with eight kills on 14 attacks without a single error.
Set 2 – FSU 25, UNC 15
FSU took an early lead in the set on a 4-1 run fueled by a pair of kills from Tiana
Jackson, a block by Knuth and Caffrey and an ace from Taylor Roberts, but a tougher block from UNC kept the set close. The Seminoles saw success pushing their attacks deeper into the back of UNC’s
court and using the Heels’ block to pick up kills to hold the lead.
Murray saw her second set without an error in the match, hitting (4-0-6) in the second set after going (2-0-6) in the first. Knuth also remained errorless through two, picking up three kills on 7 attacks. Florida State was able to suppress the Tar Heels’ offense with two blocks and 13 digs, holding UNC to just .032 hitting in the set.
Set 3 – FSU 25, UNC 23
While FSU’s defense was able to stay consistent in the beginning of the third set, the offense was met with a large net presence from UNC. As
FSU’s offense began clicking, the Seminoles were able to take the lead at the 20-19 mark and hold it until the end.
While North Carolina saw its best offensive effort of the match in the third set and didn’t see a single unforced error, Florida State’s five total blocks and 16 kills kept the set tight and eventually helped the Seminoles close it out.

Volleyball Downs Wolfpack to Close Out Regular Season.
The Seminoles dropped only one set in its final two matches of the regular season.
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Florida State volleyball team (19-9, 15-3 ACC) took down NC State (15-13, 9-9 ACC) in four sets on the road on Friday afternoon, giving the Seminoles two wins to close out the season. With a 15-3 conference record, Florida State finishes the regular season in second place in the ACC.
The Seminoles hit .299 in the set, led by a .636 effort from middle blocker Deja Williams, a .444 hitting percentage from middle blocker Tiana Jackson, and a .433 effort from outside hitter Christina Ambrose. The offense was supported by 29 assists from Brianne Burkert and a double-double from Adrian Ell (19 assists, 10 digs).
Sophomore middle blocker Taryn Knuth had a hand in 12 of the team’s 14 total blocks, tying her career high of three solo blocks, while Burkert saw her first solo block of the season in the first set.
Set 1 – NCSU 25, FSU 19
Florida State struggled to hold off NC State’s offense in the beginning of the set as the Wolfpack
found their way around the Seminoles’ block to find the floor. Halfway through the opening set, a combination of different plays from the front row and a tighter block helped FSU slow down their
opponent.
A 3-1 run led by kills from Caffrey and Burkert helped the Seminoles close NC State’s lead to 21-18, but the Wolfpack’s consistent offense helped them close out the opening set for a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set 2 – FSU 25, NCSU
While the Wolfpack once again started off strong in the first few points of the set, an ace from Madison Sullivan started off a 6-0 run
that gave Florida State its first lead of the match and forced NC State to take its first timeout. In their 7-0 scoring run, FSU saw kills from Knuth and Ambrose, a block from the pair and three
errors from the Wolfpack.
The Seminoles held NC State to just .000 hitting with three blocks and an equally tough offense through the first half of the set. The Wolfpack saw fewer unforced errors in the last half of the set and placed kills deeper into the court to close the Seminoles’ lead, but a pair of blocks and a kill from Caffrey helped Florida State close out the set and tie up the match.
Set 3 – FSU 30, NCSU 28
Florida State took the first three points in the set with a block from Knuth and Tiana Jackson, a kill from Jackson and then an ace from Adrian Ell.
While the Wolfpack took more swings at the ball and earned more kills, three blocks from Florida State and nine unforced errors from NC State kept the set tight.
The Seminoles reached set point with a block from Knuth and Burkert and an ace from Wicinski, but the Wolfpack tied it back up at the 24-all mark. The set was tied four more times from there before back-to-back kills from Ambrose finished it off for FSU and gave the Seminoles a 2-1 lead in the match.
Set 4 – FSU 25, NCSU 19
A consistent attack from Florida State highlighted the first 10 points in the set,
as the Seminoles were hitting 1.000 with five kills on five attacks. From there, errors from the Wolfpack kept Florida State in the lead, and the Seminoles capitalized on those errors, using a strong
defensive presence to keep NC State’s hitting percentage down.
A consistent hitting effort helped the Seminoles hold the edge over the Wolfpack, as Florida State hit .462 in the set with 15 kills on 26 attempts – their fewest total attacks of the match. Three kills from Caffrey kept the team’s hitting percentage high and finished off the match for FSU.

Volleyball Concludes Season at NCAA Tournament.
The Seminoles fell to the No. 16 Florida Gators in the First Round; finishes 19th straight winning
season.
ORLANDO, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team (19-9, 15-3 ACC) ended its season in the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night, falling to the No. 16 Florida Gators (25-6, 15-3 SEC) in the First Round. The second-seeded Gators swept three-seed Florida State at UCF’s campus site, marking Florida State’s first loss to Florida in the postseason since 2010.
Junior outside hitter Payton Caffrey, the ACC Player of the Year, led FSU’s offense with 14 kills, hitting .275 in the match. The Seminoles’ defensive effort was led by senior libero Kelsey Wicinski with 14 digs, and three blocks from both redshirt senior Christina Ambrose and sophomore Taryn Knuth.
The Seminoles saw their 19th straight winning season in 2018, and made the NCAA Tournament for the 10th consecutive season – making them one of only 11 teams in the nation to accomplish the feat. The team went into the postseason sitting above 30 in the RPI for the 10th straight season, and finished as one of the top two teams in the conference for the 13th time in program history.
Set 1 – UF 25, FSU 21
The beginning of the opening set stayed tight as both teams used smart plays to put the
ball down and pick up points, but an inability to return Florida’s attacks kept the Seminoles behind on the scoreboard. FSU’s defense started clicking in the last half of the set, as the Seminoles
were able to keep the ball alive and slow down Florida’s tough offense.
While the Seminoles were able to hang in the set until the end, it was errors on both serving and serve receive that gave the Gators the points they needed to finish the set and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Set 2 – UF 25, FSU 20
The Seminoles started off the second set strong, gaining an early lead with
kills from Caffrey and Ashley Murray, and an assisted block from the pair. Attack errors and service errors highlighted the first half of the set, but a 3-0 scoring run fueled by two kills and a block
helped them regain a lead that they never surrendered.
While Caffrey’s seven kills in the set helped the Seminoles’ offense stay strong against Florida’s large offensive presence, a more consistent execution from the Gators’ front line helped them outhit the Seminoles and stay ahead throughout the set.
Set 3 – UF 25, FSU 13
The beginning of the third set stayed close, as
Florida picked up more kills than the Seminoles, but also more errors. The Seminoles saw more success getting the point on scrappy rallies and didn’t pick up a single unforced hitting error, but
Florida’s consistency helped them maintain the lead as they continued to outhit the Seminoles.
Florida controlled nearly every point until the end of the set, going on a 10-1 run to reach 20 points, only surrendering a point on an attack error. From there, a 5-2 run from the Gators helped them close out the match and advance to the Second Round.
