Four Noles Post Victories at Clemson Opener.

by Tim Hofmann

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Florida State track and field team got off to a strong start for their indoor season with four individuals picking up wins in their respective events Friday at the Clemson Opener in Clemson, S.C.

"Overall, it was a good meet for us," head coach Bob Braman said. "We haven't competed in December before, and I really liked how it kept us motivated through fall training. We're not where we are going to be in February and March, but we got some good work in."

Alonie Sutton led the way for the Noles with a win in the triple jump (12.86m) and a third-place finish in the long jump (5.91m).

Jacore Irving had a stellar day with a great early-season mark of 15.84m in the triple jump to win the event. Irving also finished second in the long jump with a mark of 7.20m.

Ashley Seymour and Ediong Odiong each had solid days in the sprints for the Noles. Seymour took home gold in the 200m dash with a time of 24.18 - her best indoor time as a Nole. Seymour also finished third in the 60m dash (7.50) right behind Odiong (7.45).

Amari Douglas also got a win in the 800m run with a time of 1:58.94, and Tyson Williams ran a personal best of 8.01 in the 60m hurdles to take third.

The Noles ended the meet on a strong note with a couple of impressive 4x400m relay performances. The men's squad had two teams compete with the 'A' team of Damarre Martin, Sean Watkins Jr., JoVaughn Martin and DaeQwan Butler taking first with a time of 3:09.71. The 'B' team of James Rivera, Tyson Williams, Riley Ott and Amari Douglas finished fourth with a time of 3:19.54.

On the women's side, Michelle Petit-Pointe, Ashley Seymour, De'Andreah Young and Savyon Toombs combined to finish third in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:50.74.

Other top five finishers include Darryl Gay in the 60m dash (6.82), Megan Cook in the weight throw (16.75m), De'Andreah Young (1:36.18) and James Rivera (1:22.44) in the 600m run, Savyon Toombs in the 300m dash (38.74) and Riley Ott in the 400m dash (49.18).

"Lauren did a fantastic job in the 5000m run tonight in Boston," head coach Bob Braman said. "Many of the best runners in the country were competing, and she finished seventh among collegiate athletes. Her time will likely qualify her for the NCAA Indoor Championships."

In just her second indoor meet as a Seminole, the Brighton, Australia, native broke Militsa Mircheva's record of 15:43.30, which she set in 2019. Ryan posted a time of 15:40.40 to finish ninth in the field. Ryan is now the fourth current Seminole to crack the top 10 list in the 5000m run, joining Rebecca Clark (No. 5), Elizabeth Funderburk (No. 7) and Alyson Churchill (No. 9).

"It's a good starting point, and it was my fastest 5k opener ever," Ryan said. "I'm excited to get back to work to keep improving throughout the track season."

Wildschutt Takes Fourth; Two Noles Final on Day One of NCAA Championships.

March 11, 2022

by Tim Hofmann

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Adriaan Wildschutt led the way on a successful day one of the NCAA Indoor Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.

Wildschutt continued his stellar career as he earned a podium finish in the 5000m run for the second straight year. Wildschutt finished fourth in the race with a time of 13:21.23. Wildschutt is the only Nole in school history to record back-to-back top five finishes in the indoor 5000m run.

"A real gutsy race from Adriaan," Head Coach Bob Braman said. "He gave everything he had and made every move to give himself a chance to win."

Trey Cunningham continued his quest for a national title after a 7.50 time in the 60m hurdle preliminary race. Cunningham's time was a full 0.13 seconds faster than the next fastest qualifying time.

In his first race since Jan. 15, Don'dre Swint punched his ticket to the finals in the 60m dash, clocking in at 6.60. Swint's had the eighth-fastest qualifying time but his season best time of 6.53 ranks second among the finalists.

Ahmed Muhumed battled back in the 5000m run after being tripped up near the halfway mark of the race. Muhumed finished 15th with a time of 13:58.91.

Senior Isaac Grimes was slated to compete for a national title in the long jump, but he did not compete due to an injury suffered in warmups.

Trey Cunningham Captures National Championship Crown.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - One of the greatest hurdlers in world history finally got his title.

Senior Trey Cunningham got the monkey off his back Saturday night winning the 60m hurdles national title in front of several teammates, coaches, family members and friends at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.

Cunningham left no doubt in the championship race clocking in a staggering 7.38, bettering his previous personal best time of 7.40. Cunningham's time is the 11th-fastest time in the history of the sport and was just 0.03 seconds off the collegiate record. Cunningham became the first Nole to win an indoor national title since Dentarious Locke in 2014. Cunningham is also just the second Nole to win a title in the 60m hurdles, joining Drew Bunson who won the title in 2008.

"I'm so happy for Trey to finally win the NCAA title. Until today, he was probably the greatest collegiate track athlete ever to not win a national title," Head Coach Bob Braman said. "He's No. 2 all-time indoors, and he has a chance to be the best ever in outdoors."

Don'dre Swint was the only other male athlete to compete for the Noles on the final day of competition. After the starting block sensors malfunctioned, officials elected to rerun the race with all but two athletes already completing the full 60m race. In the second go around, Swint finished seventh with a time of 6.68. The men ended the meet with 17 points and tied for the 13th.

"I'm really pleased with our men. They've fought through adversity all year, and the crew here in Birmingham ran to their utmost abilities," Braman said.

Lauren Ryan capped off a phenomenal indoor season with another solid race in the 3000m run. Ryan finished fourth with a time of 9:01.37 in her first-ever NCAA Indoor Championships to earn first team All-America honors.

"I'm really pleased for Lauren. With this being her first NCAA Indoor Championship, she handled herself well and ran a tactical race. I'm really excited for her to chase a national title in the outdoor season," Braman said.

by Tim Hofmann

DURHAM, N.C. - The Florida State track and field team got off to a terrific start Thursday at the ACC Outdoor Championships. Isaac Grimes (long jump), Lauren Ryan (10,000m run) and Ahmed Muhumed (10,000m run) each took home ACC titles on the first day of competition. The men currently lead the team standings with 33 points while the women are fourth with 24 points.

Grimes led a trio of FSU jumpers in the long jump competition. The Noles went first, second and fourth in the event to score 23 points in a single event. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Florida State track and field team punched two more tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Championships Thursday afternoon at the NCAA East Preliminary in Bloomington, Ind.

"Our ladies had a really good day today. Obviously, the highlight was our two javelin throwers punching their ticket, but our sprinters had a fantastic day along with solid performances from Ruby [Stauber] and Maudie [Skyring]."

Kelechi Nwanaga and Sara Zabarino will return to Eugene in the javelin after they each posted a top five finish in the event. Nwanaga posted a solid mark on her first of three throws with a mark of 54.72m to finish second. That mark was Nwanga's best mark since Mar. 24 at the FSU Relays where she threw a personal best 55.06m. Zabarino posted a solid mark of 52.16m to finish fifth in the event.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Florida State men's track and field team put together some phenomenal performances on their final day of competition at the NCAA East Preliminary in Bloomington, Ind. A total of eight Noles and two relay teams will be headed to Eugene, Ore. for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

"I was really pleased with our performances today," said Head Coach Bob Braman. "The 4x100m relay got us off to a great start with a really good time on a wet track on a cold night, and we had some guys gut it out to punch their ticket to nationals. We have set ourselves up really well to compete for a title in Eugene."

The 4x100m relay started the night off with a bang as Taylor Banks, Amir Willis, Don'dre Swint and Jo'Vaughn Martin combined to run 38.51 on a cold and wet night. That time is No. 2 in the NCAA this season, was a meet record and also put the group No. 2 of FSU's all-time list.

Trey Cunningham put together one of the most special performances in 110m hurdle history. Cunningham reclaimed the fastest time in the world with a new personal best 13.07 into 1.5m/s headwind. According to the USTFCCCA, only five athletes in world history have run the 110m hurdles faster into a headwind, and Cunningham's time was the third-fastest in world history into a headwind of 1.5m/s or stronger. Cunningham now has the fifth-fastest time in NCAA history.

In the triple jump, Jeremiah Davis and Jacore Irving solidified their spots at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Davis jumped 15.99m while Irving posted a season-best mark of 15.84m.

In the 100m dash, Banks and Martin ran 10.17 and 10.18, respectively to move on to the semifinals in Eugene in the event.

The Noles ended the night with the 5000m run and the 4x400m relay and will have representatives at Hayward Field in both events. Adriaan Wildschutt (13:39.33) finished fifth overall, and Ahmed Muhumed (13:44.42) finished 12th to become the first pair in school history to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 5000m run.

In the 4x400m relay, Sean Watkins Jr., Willis, James Rivera and DaeQwan Butler combined to run 3:05.33 to finish third in their heat and secure and automatic spot into the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

EUGENE, Ore. - Sara Zabarino led the way for the Noles earning First-Team All-America honors in the javelin on the second day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

"I thought we competed really well today. We had a school record in the 4x100m relay and two No. 2 FSU all-time performances with Blessing and Sara. We have the opportunity to put it together and maybe get to top 10 or top 15 team performance on Saturday," Head Coach Bob Braman said.

Zabarino shined under the bright lights of Hayward Field Thursday night. Zabarino threw 55.61m on her third throw of the day to finish fifth. Zabarino now holds the top two marks in school history as she broke the school record at the ACC Outdoor Championships with a mark of 55.66m. This is the first time Zabarino has earned First-Team All-America honors after she earned honorable mention last season in the event.
