No. 16 Women's Tennis Team Takes Down No. 14 Washington In Season Opener.
HONOLULU, Hawaii - The No. 16 ranked Florida State women's tennis team (1-0) starts their season off with a thrilling 4-3 victory over No. 14 Washington Huskies (4-1) at the UH Tennis Complex.
"What a way to kick off the spring season," said head coach Jennifer Hyde. "That match was an absolute dogfight on both ends of the net from start to finish. Today took a complete team effort with everyone contributing at certain spots during the day and that's what it takes to be successful in college tennis. As individual as this sport is, at the end of the day the team effort is what gets those big wins. I am just so proud of that team effort for our first match of the year. Everyone had a hand in that win and for that to be our first win of the season coming against a very talented and competitive No. 14 Washington team is just really impressive by our squad."
Junior Petra Hule and freshman Victoria Allen got things started in doubles, cruising to a quick 6-0 win on court two. The Huskies fought back with a win of their own on court one (6-3). Junior Emmanuelle Salas and freshman Sasha Hill responded with a 6-4 victory on court three to capture the doubles point for FSU.
In singles, the Garnet and Gold jumped out to take four first sets on courts one, three, five, and six. Allen took advantage of her first set win and got the job done on court five 6-3, 6-3. UW responded on courts one and four to tie the match at 2-2.
Senior Nandini Das didn't let the Huskies lead for long as she dominated to a 6-3, 6-4 win on court three. With FSU now up 3-2 in the match, senior Andrea Garcia headed into the third set on court six with the opportunity to clinch the upset victory for Florida State. The set was tied 4-4 but Garcia proved resilient as she led the Noles to victory defeating Washington's Weil 6-4.
"We are going to enjoy this win for a couple of hours because getting big wins like this is really tough to do, so we want to celebrate every second that we can," said Hyde. "We also know that there is a lot of room for growth and maturation both individually and as a team. That starts with having a repeat performance tomorrow against a very hungry and ready Hawaii team. Our focus needs to quickly shift to recovery, hydration, and getting our heads right for the next battle tomorrow morning before we head back home."

No. 16 Women's Tennis Team Improves To 2-0 On The Season.
HONOLULU, Hawaii - The No. 16 Florida State women's tennis team pulls out the win over Hawai'i after battling to a 5-2 victory on Saturday. The Seminoles improve to 2-0 on the season after their win against the Rainbow Wahine at the UH Tennis Complex.
"To walk out of this weekend 2-0 feels very good heading into ITA Kick-Off back in Tallahassee next weekend," said head coach Jennifer Hyde. "Today's 5-2 win over a very dangerous Hawai'i team was equally as difficult given the quick turnaround from beating Washington less than 24 hours before. The girls did a brilliant job of completing another team effort to get the W's. We went out to Hawaii knowing very well that this was a business trip for us, but we were able to have some fun along the way as well. To do that and be able to be so successful in our competitions as well, gets us really fired up for this season. The win today against Hawai'i backing up yesterday's significant win was so great to see. The girls didn't take their foot off the gas pedal and they knew the importance of the week."
The Garnet and Gold jumped out of the gate hot in doubles to earn the first point of the day. First to finish was court three where junior Emmanuelle Salas and freshman Sasha Hill defeated UH's Satsuki Takamura and Michelle Pits 6-2. While junior Petra Hule and freshman Victoria Allen clinched the point on court two following a 6-2 decision over Hawai'i's Rebecca Ehn and Bojana Markovic.
The battle began as the Noles and Bows split singles first sets 3-3. Senior Andrea Garcia gave the Seminoles their second team point after making quick work of UH's Lea Romain 6-2, 6-2 on court six. Hawai'i earned a point on the board with a win on court one resulting in a team score of 2-1 with FSU still in the lead.
The Bows tied it up with a win at court five, but Florida State quickly regained the lead as senior Nandini Das stepped up to take court three 6-4, 6-3. With the Seminoles now leading 3-2, Salas and Hill continued their battles on courts two and four as they headed into third sets.
Salas took care of business defeating No. 91 Bojana Markovic (UH) 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 to win the match for Florida State. After clinching the match Hill would go on to complete the win with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 victory on court two.
"We are leaving a better team and knowing the things we have to work on," said Hyde. "I am very proud of all of the girls in setting the tone for what's going to be the next 5 months of a grind of a season. I'm glad they get to reap the rewards of their commitment to getting the job done this week. Now it's time to recover and prepare for two huge matches coming up this weekend at home."

No. 14 Women's Tennis Defeats UCSB 4-1.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 14 Florida State women's tennis team (3-0) took down UC Santa Barbara (1-1) 4-2 on Saturday in their home opener and advance to the championship match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Seminoles will face No. 18 Texas A&M on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.
"We had some slow starts in singles and that's the one thing that we have to take from today and make a quick switch for tomorrow," said head coach Jennifer Hyde. "We need to make sure that we start a little hotter out of the gate. Finishing sets today was important and we were a little hesitant to close but tomorrow we will change that. When we get the leads we need to go for it to make it a little easier on ourselves."
The Garnet and Gold started the match by capturing the doubles point with ease against the Gauchos. Junior Petra Hule and freshman Victoria Allen dominated on court one, taking their match 6-3. The senior duo of Nandini Das and Andrea Garcia clinched the doubles point for the Noles 6-4, defeating UCSB's Anastasia Goncharova and Dominika Paterova.
UCSB bounced back in singles quickly taking court two to tie the match. Allen turned things around immediately by taking down Juliana Valero (UCSB) on court five 6-1, 7-5. The Noles never looked back as Das defeated Paterova of UCSB 6-4, 6-4 on court three.
Junior Emmanuelle Salas captured the doubles point on court one in a three set battle. After losing the first set, Salas fought back to take the second set against UCSB's Amit Lev-Ari 6-3. In the third set, Salas lead the Seminoles to their first home win of the spring season with a 6-2 victory.
"Manu (Emmanuelle Salas) had a slow first set but finally in the second set she did a great job of finding her range and making the girl work hard and I was really proud of that effort on her part," said Hyde.
Florida State has an opportunity to advance to the ITA Indoor Championship in Chicago, Ill. when they face No. 18 Texas A&M on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.
"We don't ever see Texas A&M during the regular season so we know it's going to be a battle," said Hyde. "Qualifying for the sweet 16 of indoors takes a lot of work and it's going to be a dog fight to get there."

No. 14 Women's Tennis Makes School History By Advancing to ITA National Indoor Championship.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 14 Florida State women's tennis team (4-0) swept No. 18 Texas A&M (4-1), 4-0, to win the championship of the Tallahassee ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Sunday at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center. With the victory, the Seminoles advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships for the second time in school history in Chicago, Ill.
"We definitely raised our level today," said head coach Jennifer Hyde. "We knew this was going to be an absolute dog fight. Texas A&M was a very good team, they chose to come here thinking we might be an easier one seed to advance through and the girls really stepped up to the occasion and that just shows how tough we are. This was probably one of the best all-around competitions that we have had from the squad this year and we knew that was what it was going to take in order to advance to Chicago. I felt like today's match was very back and forth. I think the difference was in doubles, we were more aggressive today and that was important to set the tone of the match. Those quick starts matter. I am very proud of the squad for raising the level of tennis today and getting it done."
The Seminoles came out hot in doubles and earned the point from wins on courts one and three. The first came from the duo of junior Emmanuelle Salas and freshman Sasha Hill on court three, 6-3. On court one, junior Petra Hule and freshman Victoria Allen won 7-5, to give the Garnet and Gold the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
Florida State won four of the six first sets to start off singles play. Salas was first off the court and registered a 6-1, 6-3 win against Katya Townsend on court one. Courts two through six were in a dog fight as the Seminoles battled to four third set matches.
On court four, Hill fought back from falling 6-2 in the first set to No. 114 ranked Dorthea Faa-Hviding. She showed her determination as she earned the Noles third point of the match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

No. 9 Women's Tennis Take Down No. 15 UCF in a 4-3 Thriller.
LAKE NONA, Fla. - The No. 9 Florida State women's tennis team (5-0) battled to a 4-3 win over No. 15 UCF (2-2) on Saturday at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, Fla.
"That was a gutsy, gritty college tennis match," said head coach Jennifer Hyde. "Both teams on both ends of the court were playing very high-level tennis. I am so impressed with how we competed."
The Noles captured the first doubles win as senior duo Nandini Das and Andrea Garcia dominated on court two 6-1. On court one, junior Petra Hule and freshman Victoria Allen put on their own show as they defeated the No. 3 ranked UCF doubles pair 6-3 to clinch the doubles point for the Seminoles.
"Credit to Victoria (Allen) and Petra (Hule) for knocking out the No. 3 ranked doubles pair," said Hyde. "We knew whoever was going to win that doubles point was going to be the school that was going to win the match. If we're more offensive and more aggressive it's going to be hard to beat us."
As singles began FSU and UCF were battling back and forth on all courts. The Garnet and Gold were tied in the first set on four of the six courts when the rain started to pick up at the USTA National Campus. The singles matches quickly resumed indoors as Florida State was able to take the first set on courts three, four, and five.
UCF grabbed their first point on court six 7-5, 6-1, but Florida State bounced back as Allen took care of her opponent on court five 7-5, 6-4. The match continued to go back and forth with UCF earning another point on court two 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 to tie things up 2-2.
The Seminoles would then go on to win two straight singles points, Das posted the third point for FSU on court three with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over No. 54 Marie Mattel of UCF.
The fourth point for Florida State came from a hard-fought battle on court four as Hill went up against UCF's Nadja Bay Christians. She won the first set in a tie break 7-6 (7-5). The second set wasn't much different as the two went point for point eventually leading to another tie break. With the match on the line, Hill stepped up and clinched the win for the Seminoles 7-6 (7-3) in set two.
"Huge clinch for freshman Sasha (Hill) she stepped up and stayed in there, not feeling great, but played really well," said Hyde "She hung in there mentally and it was such a strong performance from her."

The Seminoles took down No. 7 Texas (4-1) in a thrilling 4-3 victory that ended with No. 86 ranked Senior Nandini Das coming in clutch and winning the match for the Noles.
"Another complete team effort got the win again tonight," said head coach Jennifer Hyde. "That did not come easy, both teams played unbelievably well on all courts. It was going to come down to a couple of points and the mental fortitude of the players. This is a huge win for our program, I'm just really happy that the team believes in each other and has confidence in one another. We are going to enjoy this one as long as we can, but we know that we have to jump right back on the court and take on a very good UCLA team."
The Garnet and Gold started the match by taking an early 1-0 lead after rallying from behind to earn the doubles point. The Longhorns struck first by taking court one 6-2. Junior Emmanuelle Salas and freshman Sasha hill came back from being down 4-5 to win on court three 7-5. The senior duo of Das and Andrea Garcia clinched the point by fighting off a 2-4 deficit to win the match 7-5 on court two.
In singles, freshman Victoria Allen dominated on court five 6-3, 6-1 to give the Noles a 2-0 lead over Texas. The Longhorns didn't back down as they proceeded to take court one 6-3, 6-1 and court two 6-1, 6-1 to tie the match 2-2.
Garcia took care of business on court six 6-4, 6-4 to give Florida State the 3-2 advantage. Once again, Texas struck back with a victory on court four where Hill came up short after battling to a first set tie break 7-6 (7-4) to later drop the second set 6-0.

No. 9 Women's Tennis Falls to No. 4 UCLA 4-0.
CHICAGO, Ill. - The No. 9 Florida State women's tennis team (6-1) dropped a hard-fought 4-0 decision to No. 4 UCLA (6-0) in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at XS Tennis Village.
"All the credit to UCLA they played really well, they played the big points better than we did," said head coach Jennifer Hyde. "They were relentless with pressure and did a good job of commanding the big moments very well. We backed off a little bit in a couple spots and it made a big difference in allowing them some space to take over. We fought hard and competed really well, they were just a little bit better than us today."
The Garnet and Gold started off strong in doubles but were unable to hold onto their leads as UCLA later claimed the doubles point. Senior doubles pair of Nandini Das and Andrea Garcia jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but their match went unfinished as they were up 5-4. The senior duo of Nandini Das and Andrea Garcia showed their maturity by getting the job done on court three 6-4 to clinch the doubles point.
The Garnet and Gold got off to an unusual start in singles as the team was forced to switch up their entire lineup. The Seminoles had to move everyone up a court and bring in freshman Alice Amendola on court six who has only played in one dual match all season. With the Noles getting familiarized in their new roles the Cavaliers tied the match up early in singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win on court four.
Das quickly responded with an impressive 6-3, 6-2 win on two against UVA's No. 47 Rosie Johanson. Once again, Virginia didn't back down as they won two straight with wins on court one and five to take a 3-2 lead.
With the match on the line, it all came down to two freshmen in Allen and Amendola to clinch the match over a top-10 opponent on the road. On court six, Amendola battled to take the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-2). She was down 2-5 in the second set but fought back to win five straight games and take the final set 7-5.
With the match now tied at three, the Seminoles once again turned to a freshman to step up and get the job done on court three. No. 80 ranked Allen lost the first set 7-5 but rebounded to easily take the second set 6-3. In the third set, Allen came in clutch and fought off four match points late in the set to win 7-5 and clinch the match for Florida State.
