The Seminoles moved to 5-1 as they defeated Auburn 5-2 today.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Despite the cold temperature outside, the No.21 Florida State Women's Tennis Team stayed hot as they defeated the Auburn Tigers today at the Indoor Tennis Facility, 5-2.
"I'm very pleased with how the girls took care of their business today," Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. "Auburn is a very competitive and gritty team. We knew it was going to be tough for us. Our ladies did a great job of staying focused on their courts and playing solid tennis and I'm glad we're walking away with a win heading into the next phase of our season."
Only fielding two doubles teams due to injuries, the Seminoles clinched the valuable doubles point with juniors Carolina De los Santos and Amy Sargeant winning in the second position against Paulina Schippers and Plamena Kurteva, 8-5. The second and clinching doubles came from junior Francesca Segarelli and sophomore Ruth Seaborne, who moved back up to the first court and defeated Jamie Kasler and Jen Pfiefler, 8-6. "Any time you start a match with a 1-0 deficit, having to forfeit a double and a singles match, it certainly adds a little pressure." Hyde stated. "I was satisfied with how we responded. It was never an excuse or an issue for the team today. I'm proud of the attitude they brought to the match because that's what it took for us to win."
Seaborne would extend the lead to 3-1 by defeating Schippers 6-1, 6-3 for her third win on the season.
The match would be clinched on the racket of Sargeant as she rallied to outlast Kasler on the fifth court, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Sargeant is now 2-1 in three-set matches. "It helped to see Amy charging ahead in that third set in order to clinch our fourth point," Hyde said. "It certainly took some pressure off the remaining matches."
Freshman Leyla Erkan took the second court with her aggressive play, but fell to Pfiefler, 7-6, 7-5 in her first loss of the season.
Although Florida State had already sealed the match, Segarelli fought through a three-set tiebreaker in order to beat Emily Flickenger in the first spot, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 for the fifth point.
"I was proud of Fran today when she gutted out a 7-6 win in a three- set tiebreaker," Hyde said. "She needed to get a good win under her belt. Things weren't going her way throughout the match, but she hung in there and got it done."

'Noles Fall to Bulls.
The Seminoles suffer a tough loss to USF 4-3.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The No. 22 Florida State Tennis Team dropped a tough match today 4-3 at the Indoor Tennis Facility to No. 39 South Florida as the Seminoles move to 5-2 on the season.
"Today was a frustrating day for us," Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. "We just didn't compete at the level we need to and South Florida came into our facility and they wanted the match more. They dealt with adversity better than we did and they were willing to do what it took to win."
The Seminoles began the match by sweeping the doubles point with three new combinations of doubles pairs, each marking the first time this season they've played together.
Juniors Carolina De los Santos and Francesca Segarelli defeated Lucie Rey and Fanny Fracassi, 8-2 on court two. Sophomore Ruth Seaborne and freshman Leyla Erkan beat Danielle Mills and Paula Montoya in the third position 8-5. On court one, junior Amy Sargeant and freshman Mia Vriens took their match 8-6 against Ecaterina Vasenina and Loreto Alonso.
"One of the bright spots on the day was coming out and sweeping doubles," Hyde said. "We changed partnerships up and they played well together today. They communicated well, their strategies were great and they stuck to their game plans. We played some very solid doubles today."
In singles, after falling behind in the second set 5-2, Sargeant sparked a comeback to take the second set, winning the match, 6-1, 7-5 on the court six, making the score 2-0.
The Bulls snatched a point on the second court shortening the FSU lead to 2-1 as Alonso def. Vriens in her FSU debut, 6-2, 6-3.
Erkan moved to 6-1 on the season as she cranked out a victory 6-2, 6-2, on court three against Mills. The Seminoles then extended their edge 3-1.
With three matches left playing, two being in the third set, the Bulls stole another point from the fifth court with Rey defeating De Los Santos in three sets, 3-6,6-4, 6-1, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Seminoles.
Within a matter of minutes, South Florida tied it up at three with Seaborne falling to Fracassi, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 at number four.
As all eyes shifted to the first court after the match was delayed in the middle of the first set, Vasenina would finish the match by defeating Segarelli, 6-1, 6-1, stealing the match away from the Seminoles.
"We have a very short turnaround here as we prepare for Miami on Sunday," Coach Jennifer Hyde added. "I'm interested to see how the team responds to this difficult loss as we being ACC play less than two days from now."

FSU Falls to Miami.
The Seminoles dropped their match to No.14 Miami today 5-2.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The No. 22 Florida State Tennis Team lost to No.14 Miami today at the Indoor Tennis Facility, 5-2 falling to 5-3, 0-1 on the season.
"Even though we fell short today, the team definitely did a better job competing versus our effort on Friday," Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. "Today we lacked in execution in some areas, which is something that can be worked on and improved."
Miami would earn the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. Freshman Leyla Erkan and Ruth Seaborne fell to Gaby Mejia and Lina Lileikite, 8-3 on court three. After falling behind 6-2, junior Amy Sargeant and freshman Mia Vriens battled back to tie their match on court one, 6-6, with juniors Carolina De los Santos and Francesca Segarelli ahead in their match 4-3 on court two. But, Miami's Melissa Bolivar and Liat Zimmermann would hold on to defeat Sargeant and Vriens, 8-6 securing the point for the Hurricanes as De Los Santos and Segarelli would outlast Brittany Dubins and Anna Bartenstien, 8-6.
In singles, Segarelli fell to No.7 Bartenstein 6-1, 6-1 on court one, putting Miami ahead 2-0.
Sargeant would make a statement on her court, as she went on to defeat Dubins at number six, 6-2, 6-2 pulling the Seminoles to within one at 2-1.
Erkan bounced back in the second set after falling in the first, but couldn't force a third set as she lost to Mejia, 6-0, 6-4 on court two.
Minutes later, Bolivar took the match against De Los Santos 6-4, 6-4 on court four, giving the Hurricanes two quick points and the match.
Vriens forced a third tiebreak points set, but could hold on as she fell to Lileikite, 8-6, 5-7, 12-10 on court three.
Seaborne would finish out the match for the Seminoles by adding a point on court five as she overcame Zimmermann in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 making the final score 5-2.
"There's no doubt that our best tennis is ahead of us," Hyde said. "We are still in the process of getting better. We need to start coming out with a 'never die' attitude at the start of matches. We have to be better at staying in points longer and executing after we set the points up. We are slowly getting there, but there is plenty of work ahead."

The Seminoles were swept in Gainesville today, 7-0.
GAINESVILLE, FL - The Florida State Women's Tennis Team fell to the No. 15 Florida Gators today, 7-0 at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex to move to 5-4 on the season.
"I don't think that all of the scores reflect just how close some of the matches really were today," Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. "We just didn't play the big points very well when we had opportunities in those closer games."
The Seminoles were swept in doubles, with the No. 13 team of Allie Will and Sofie Oyen beating juniors Carolina De los Santos and Francesca Segarelli, 8-2 on court one. On court two, junior Amy Sargeant and Mia Vriens fell to Joanna Mather and Carolina Hitimana, 8-2. The team of sophomore Ruth Seaborne and freshman Leyla Erkan fell to Alexandra Cercone and Olivia Janowicz, 8-0.
In singles, Seaborne dropped her match to No. 39 Oyen 6-2, 6-1 on court five. On court four, De Los Santos fell to No. 49 Cercone, 6-1, 6-2.
Finishing within minutes of each other, Erkan fell to No. 23 Lauren Embree, 6-2, 6-2, while Segarelli dropped her match to No. 1 Will, 6-1, 6-2 on court one. Vriens would be the last to finish as she lost to No. 18 Mather, 6-3, 6-1 on court three.
"I think with Leyla and Fran playing in the one and two spots, we competed very well there," Hyde said. "They had a lot of opportunities and most of their games were deuce games, but they just didn't execute when we had they had a lead or had game points. The same was the case with Mia. Mia is still finding her stride on court and is still getting comfortable competing after sitting out for the last few months. Once things start rolling for her, I expect that she can do some great things this semester."

We did not play our best tennis today but finding a way to get it done down the stretch was important for this team. With this win under our belts against a solid Pepperdine team, we will get ready to head back to the east coast in order to prepare for Clemson in a few days."

The Seminoles dropped their match against Georgia Tech today, 5-2.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The No. 39 Florida State women's tennis team fell to the No.25 Georgia Tech today, 5-2 in front of an energized crowd at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
For the first time ever, both the men's and women's tennis teams played their matches simultaneously, drawing a big crowd and great display of college tennis. The men's team would defeat Clemson, 4-3.
"Today was a great environment for college tennis," Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. "With both men's and women's team playing side-by-side, that's something we've never done before. I think it was a very cool experience for the student athletes. I'm happy to see the men won their match over Clemson 4-3. I wish we could have played a bit better against Georgia Tech. We had our chances in doubles and we came up a little short. I do think things could have been different for us heading in to singles with that doubles point under our belts."
The Seminoles lost the doubles point with two matches being decided by tiebreaker. After being down 6-3, junior Amy Sargeant and freshman Mia Vriens staged a gutsy comeback to take the lead 8-7. The team of Lynn Blau and Elizabeth Kilborn would tie the match at 8 before eventually sealing the doubles point in tiebreak, at 9-8 (7-4).
Junior Francesca Segarelli and freshman Leyla Erkan would also survive a fight in doubles, as they took their match in tiebreak points 9-8. In singles, the Seminoles continued to win matches on the fifth and sixth courts as junior Carolina De los Santos won her match on court five against Angelescu, 6-3, 6-3 on court six.
After falling behind in the first set, junior Amy Sargeant found her stride as she went on to defeat Blau 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
"In singles, we need to do a better job of putting complete matches together", Hyde said. "We're not firing on all six courts right now. We're going to keep working; we still have a lot of tennis ahead of us. We have some hurdles to get over and this week will provide us with three more opportunities to do just that, with matches on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday."

Five's for Fighting.
Sophomore Ruth Seaborne staged an epic comeback on court five in order to secure the match for the Seminoles against No.39 TCU.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The No.40 Florida State women's tennis team started off their match against No.39 TCU by claiming four of the six courts, including one gutsy comeback victory as they went on to defeat the Horned Frogs today 5-2 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
"That was an unbelievably exciting match today," Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. "Considering the adversity this team is in the midst of, they did a fantastic job of stepping up in a number of different spots and across the board."
Just when it looked like the Horned Frogs were about to tie the match at 3-3, the heroic comeback on court five proved just to be the opposite. After falling in the first set, sophomore Ruth Seaborne fought back to take the second set against Federica Denti, forcing a third. Once again, the London, England native found herself in a hole as she was down 5-0 in the third set. Seaborne did the unthinkable and won seven straight games to take her match, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, sealing the victory for the Seminoles and making the score 4-2 before doubles.
"Being down 0-5 in her match and finding a way to win seven straight games was something that Ruth needed to see in herself, and also something this team needed to see." Hyde said. "This win for Ruth, and for the team, could not have come at a better time as we head in to two big ACC road matches this weekend."
Junior Francesca Segarelli put the Noles on the board first as she came away with a convincing victory over Olivia Smith 6-1, 6-2 on court three.
Continuing her court six dominance was junior Amy Sargeant as she defeated Gaby Mastrimarino 6-1, 6-1, making the score 2-0 FSU.
TCU would earn their first point on court one as Stefanie Tan beat freshman Leyla Erkan 6-3, 6-0. The Horned Frogs would tie the match at 2-2 as they claimed the match on court two with Simona Parajova defeating freshman Mia Vriens, 6-4, 6-2.
The match wouldn't stay tied for long as junior Carolina De los Santos blazed to a win on court four against Millie Nichols, 6-4, 6-2 making the score 3-2. Seaborne sealed the deal on court five for the Noles with her epic comeback.
Just minutes after her singles triumph, Seaborne teamed up with Segarelli in doubles to go on to defeat Barbosa and Smith, 8-6 on court one. Sargeant and Erkan would secure the doubles point as they beat Tan and Kelsey Sunduram 8-4 on court two.
"I hope the girls enjoy the feeling after a big win like this," Hyde said. "Because there is so much parody in college tennis nowadays, every time you step on the court and get a win it's a big win. On any given day, it seems like anyone can beat anybody. We did a great job of sticking to our guns today. I'm proud of them and I'm happy that they can enjoy this win as we head into the weekend."

RALEIGH, NC - The No.40 Florida State women's tennis team grabbed their first conference win this season by defeating NC State today, 5-2 at the J.W Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C., improving to 8-6 (1-3 ACC) on the season.
"Today was a very good day for us," Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. "We set the tone of the match by taking that doubles point. All three positions were very close and we fought ourselves out of a few holes, but in the end they found a way to get it done. We did a great job of playing fundamental and aggressive tennis in some big situations. I'm really proud of the way the team handled that today."
The Seminoles kicked things off by snatching the doubles point, claiming victories on courts two and three. Junior Amy Sargeant and freshman Leyla Erkan picked up their second win on the year as a pair by defeating Tatiana Illova and Nicole Martinez 8-6 on court two. Junior Carolina De los Santos and freshman Mia Vriens outlasted the battle on court three to clinch the double point by beating Elisha Hande and Chole Smith 9-8.
After two defaults in singles, one by each team, junior Francesca Segarelli made the score 3-1 as she went on to defeat Ashley Miller on court three, 6-2, 6-4.

All Jokes Aside.
The Seminoles won their fifth match in a row behind another solid performance.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The No.37 Florida State women's tennis team pummeled No. 66 Boston College on the way to their fifth-straight victory today defeating the Eagles 5-2, and move to 11-6 (4-2 ACC) on the season.
"We set a team goal to go 5-0 in this stretch and that is exactly what this team did." Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. "These were five competitive and very important matches for us, and I'm so happy to see the girls step up and take care of checking that goal off of their list."
For the fifth-consecutive match, the Seminoles captured the doubles point, taking the 1-0 lead into singles play. Winning on court three was junior Carolina De los Santos and Mia Vriens as beat Ina Kappilua and Katarina Gajic, 8-3.
Junior Francesca Segarelli and sophomore Ruth Seaborne held on to defeat No.38 Alex Kelleher and Olga Khmylev on court one 8-6. Seaborne and Segarelli have knocked off ranked opponents in consecutive matches en route to their tenth win on the season as a pair.
"We handled another big doubles point today." Hyde said. "Mia and Caro took a quick lead and No. 3, and Ruth and Fran jumped out to a 7-1 lead as well. We let them back in at No.1 for four or five games, buy they did well to clinch the win."
In singles, Segarelli dominated in her match on court four as she defeated Kelleher 6-0, 6-2. Moments later, Seaborne rolled on to victory on court two against Wacnik, 6-2, 6-3. The pair of Seminole wins made the score 3-0 in favor of FSU.
Snatching the fourth and match sealing point would be junior Amy Sargeant on court six as she defeated Kelly Barry 6-2, 7-5 for her 12th singles win on the spring.
The Eagles would steal a point as Gajic defeated Vriens on court three 7-6 (7-3),6-2 making the score 4-1.
On court five, De Los Santos fell into a 5-2 hole in the second set, but rallied back to take her match against Khymlev 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).
Despite falling in the first set, freshman Leyla Erkan battled back from a 3-1 deficit in the second to force a tiebreak set on court one. Erkan would fall in the tiebreak points against Kikuchi, 6-2, 6-7, 1-0 (10-5) making the final score 5-2.
"As we head into this next phase of the season, we have to focus on playing emotionally consistent tennis," Hyde said. "Being emotionally consistent each day we compete is something we can continue to work on during this stretch leading into the ACC Championships. I'm so proud of the team and how they've performed during this 5-0 streak. That speaks a lot for the progress that's being made. We still have a lot of learning and growing to do, but we're right where we need to be heading into these next four big matches."

Tar Heels Take Noles.
The Seminoles fell to No.8 North Carolina 4-0.
CHAPEL HILL, NC - The No.31 Florida State women's tennis team fell to No.8 North Carolina today, 4-0 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C., moving to 11-7 (4-4 ACC) on the season.
The Seminoles surrendered the doubles point as the Tar Heel won all three doubles matches. Junior Amy Sargeant and freshman Leyla Erkan dropped their match on court three 8-1 to Gina Suarez-Malaguti and Caroline Price. On court two, No. 7 Haley Hemm and Tessa Lyons defeated freshman Mia Vriens and junior Carolina De los Santos, 8-2. Junior Francesca Segarelli and Ruth Seaborne fell 8-4 on court one to No.4 Shinann Featherston and Lauren McHale.
"UNC came out very hot in doubles today, and we made a lot of errors across the board in doubles," Head Coach Jennifer Hyde said. "We have to get back to playing doubles like we did during the five matches prior to this."
Play was stopped after North Carolina had clinched the match, however the Seminoles forced third sets on three courts.
Segarelli was handed her first loss on court four of the spring as she fell to No.98 Price 6-1, 6-2. Seaborne would retire her match to No.33 McHale, 7-6, 4-1 ret. Sargeant lost on court five to Lyons, 6-3, 6-3, giving the Tar Heels the 4-0 win.
"In singles, with one exception, every match was very close," Hyde said. "Although we had a 4-0 loss, we split sets in three different positions and those matches were all stopped when UNC reached four points. The final score does not tell an accurate story of how very close this match was. We all see that fact and we hope we can get another shot at UNC at the ACC Championships in a few weeks. We will see how that pans out later, but for now we need to get ready for another big competition tomorrow against Duke."

TALLAHASSEE, FL - The No.33 Florida State women's tennis fell in their last regular season match today 4-3 to No.15 Virginia at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
"Today's match is definitely a stinger," head coach Jennifer Hyde said. "After winning that doubles point and having a couple leads in the match slip away definitely hurts. We were poised for that big win of the season that we've been looking for. We had it within our grasp and we came up a little short today."
After freshman Leyla Erkan and Mia Vriens fell to No.32 Lindsey Hardenbergh and Emily Frasier 8-2 on court two in doubles, juniors Carolina De los Santos and Francesca Segarelli completed a comeback on court three. In singles, Sargeant gave the Seminoles a 2-0 edge as she defeated Molly O'Koniewski on court six, 6-1, 6-1.

On court two, Erkan would drop her match to No.38 Hardenbergh 6-1, 6-3, tying the score 2-2 with three close matches still in play.
After falling big in the first set, Segarelli came back to take her match in three sets against Vierra on court four, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. At this point, Florida State regained the lead at 3-2 with two matches left.
"Fran got herself in a hole," Hyde said. "She fought her way out by playing very solid second and third sets of tennis."
Florida State would give up the next two points as Vriens fell to No.109 Tomlijanovic in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 on court three.
The Seminoles would fall with a final score of 4-3 after De Los Santos dropped her match to Pertez, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
"Despite the tough loss today, we are already looking ahead to our first round match at the ACC Championship this Thursday and will know later today who we will see in that match at noon against Virginia Tech. We still have so much ahead and much to prove in the next 5 weeks. This time of year is why you play college tennis, and Championship season is now directly in front of us. I can't wait to get this team to Cary, NC and make a run at another title again this year. This is by far the most exciting time of the tennis season."
