Women's Tennis Wins Four Flight Championships At The Seminole Invitational.
Florida State concluded the tournament with four championships and five second place finishes.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The 2006 Seminole Invitational concluded today, October 28 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The tournament was able to conclude play; therefore, no matches will take place on Sunday. Florida State's women's tennis team was able to pull off four championship wins and five runner-ups.
"It was great to have so many people in the finals and those that won in the finals," stated head coach Jennifer Hyde. "Being in the finals and being the flight champion is something that they are demanding of themselves."
The day began with doubles matches as Florida State won the White Doubles Draw. Junior Tapiwa Marobela (Gaborone, Botswana) and sophomore Suzanna Mansour (Greenacres, Fla.) defeated Jacksonville's Sulyos/Soldatova 8-6 to win the flight championship.
Senior Miranda Foley (Cambridge, England) and freshman Jessica Wente (Whitehouse, Texas) defeated Bethune-Cookman's Polakova/Kendrick 8-1 to advance to the finals. They fell to South Florida's one seed Sweeting/Duch 4-8 to take home second.
In the Garnet Draw senior Nicola Slater (Ayr, Scotland) and freshman Lauren Macfarlane (Ogden, Utah) bounced back from their loss yesterday with two wins. They defeated Stetson's Canady/Leonenko 8-5 and then routed Bethune-Cookman's Ruislova/Powell 8-4. Junior Carolin Walter (Bingen, Germany) and sophomore Ania Rynarzewska fell to USF's Cruz/Rai 5-8 and then lost to North Florida's Castillo/Torres 6-8.
Singles took the court after the completions of doubles play. Slater defeated teammate Walter in the Garnet Draw by 6-4, 6-3 in the finals.
Macfarlane faced AUM's Veverkova in the Gold Draw. She went on to win 6-4, 6-2 in the finals. In the Black Draw, Rynarzewska defaulted because of an injury in the finals to USF's Duch.
In the White Draw, Wente defeated AUB's Lysak 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2 to advance to the finals. Foley lost to USF's Sweeting 5-7, 6-0 in the semifinals. In the finals, Wente faced Sweeting and won 6-4, 6-2. Foley faced AUB's Lysak for third place and defeated her 6-4, 7-5.
"The freshmen did a great job, really playing smart tennis," continued Hyde. "It was good to see them just continue to progress."
Mansour played a very dramatic match against AUB's Zuzolova in the flight champion. Zuzolova ended up winning 7-6, 5-7, 6-2.
In the Pink Draw, Marobela fell to Jacksonville's Soldatova 6-4, 5-7, 3-6 in another impressive match for the championship.
"It was a pretty good tournament," concluded Hyde. "The wins are defiantly coming in comparison to years past. It may not always be pretty, but they are getting it done and they are to be commended for that. I think that everyone may have been still a little warned down from last weekend's regional tournament. I think it did affect their focus and concentration. It will be nice to have tomorrow off after finishing the tournament in two days instead of three to get ready for the Miami Invitational in two weeks."
Nicola Slater and Lauren Macfarlane will travel to the 2006 National Indoor Championships this week.

Slater/Macfarlane Upset The No. 2 Doubles Team In The Nation.
On the first day of competition at the ITA Indoor National Championships, the duo topped the number two team in the nation.
Nov. 2, 2006
COLUMBUS, OH - The Florida State women's tennis duo of senior Nicola Slater (Ayr, Scotland) and freshman Lauren Macfarlane (Ogden, Utah) arrived in fashion at the 2006 Indoor National Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Today, November 2, the pair upset the No. 2 team in the nation.
In the first round of doubles competition, Slater and Macfarlane defeated Suzie Babos and Zsuzsanna Fodor of California, 8-6. The match was very intense with a lot of long games and long points.
"Nic and I are very excited," stated Macfarlane. "It was a good confidence builder. It was a very intense match. The great thing about tomorrow's match is that we know we can play better. It was really nice to get here a day and a half early. We played a practice match yesterday and it was good for us to get a few points in before the tournament."
"I don't think there are any words really," said Slater. "I think the shaking and the smile from one ear to the other is basically all I can say right now. I think Lauren and I are working in the best possible way; not only on the court, but off the court. We're just basically looking after one another and that is showing on the court as well. If I'm down, she does a great job of pumping me up. If she's frustrated I pump her up. We are working the best way a doubles partnership would work."
Tomorrow the doubles pair will face Notre Dame's Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m.

Florida State Falls To No. 16 Georgia 6-1.
Nicola Slater upsets No. 20 Darya Ivanov as the Seminoles lose their first match of the season.
ATHENS, GA - Senior Nicola Slater (Ayr, Scotland) upset No. 20 Darya Ivanov as No. 61 Florida State fell to No. 16 Georgia Saturday, Feb. 3, 6-1 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The Seminoles took their first loss of the season against the Bulldogs. FSU's record fell to 1-1 while UGA's record increased to 5-0.
In singles play, the lone point came from Slater's 7-6, 7-5 win over Ivanov in the No. 3 spot. Junior Carolin Walter (Bingen, Germany) fell to No. 44 Natalie Frazier 1-6, 1-6 while No. 58 freshman Lauren Macfarlane (Ogden, Utah) lost to No. 88 Monika Dancevic 3-6, 3-6. Freshman Jessica Wente (Whitehouse, Texas) fell 2-6, 2-6 to Yvette Hyndman in the No. 4 spot. Junior Tapiwa Marobela (Gaborone, Botswana) fought hard but fell 4-6, 4-6 against Kelley Hyndman. Senior Miranda Foley (Cambridge, England) faced Naoko Ueshima in the No. 6 spot but fell 1-6, 0-6.
"Nicola (Slater) did a great job today," stated head coach Jennifer Hyde. "She went out and got a win that has been a long time coming for her, personally. She raised the level of her game when she had to. She played the big points a little bit better then her opponent at critical times and it made the difference."
Florida State fell in doubles 0-3 losing the game point. No. 27 Macfarlane/Slater fell 2-8 to Y. Hyndman/Ivanov while Foley/Wente lost 4-8 to No. 42 Dancevic/K. Hyndman. Frazier/Ueshima defeated Walter/Marobela 5-8.
"It was a pretty good effort on our part," continued Hyde. "I don't think we played our best tennis today up and down the line. We did compete well in singles; in a number of positions we were very close. Lauren (Macfarlane), at number two, played a pretty solid match. Taps (Tapiwa Marobela) was neck and neck with her opponent and she could have very easily won it. We just came up a little short today. I'm please with our competitive effort."
The Seminoles hit the court again when they travel to Rice next week on Friday, Feb. 9 and Houston Feb. 11.

"I think today was an all around team effort, everyone one got their point," stated head coach Jennifer Hyde. "When that happens, when we start getting into a habit of that, we can get pretty excited. Everyone contributed in some way today and made this team better. It was the first time we had a true team effort in a match through and through. I am really proud of the girls and the way they handled themselves in a professional manner in that environment."

"Everytime you come to LSU you can expect a very rowdy crowd and today was no different," finished Hyde. "That is something our team likes to play against. They like it when we have that chaos and feed off of it. They handled it fine and enjoyed it."
The Seminoles won two doubles matches to earn the doubles point highlighted by Slater/Walter's upset of No. 11 Falcon/Robinson 8-4. Senior Miranda Foley (Cambridge, England) paired with Wente to defeat Murdock/Tiffany Tucker 8-1.

Florida State Women's Tennis Fall Short To Florida 4-3.
No. 50 Florida State women's tennis earn one doubles and two singles ranked wins after falling to No. 3 Florida.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Florida State women's tennis ended their five game winning streak on Wednesday evening as the No. 50 Seminoles fell short in 4-3 decision to the No. 3 Florida Gators. Florida State's overall season record slips to 6-2 while in-state rival Florida remains undefeated at 9-0.
Seminoles came out strong in doubles competition beginning on court number three where freshman-senior duo Jessica Wente (Whitehouse, Texas) and Miranda Foley (Cambridge, England) defeated the Gator's Csilla Borsanyi and Anastasia Revzina 8-3. Florida State clinched the doubles point on center court where senior Nicola Slater (Ayr, Scotland) and junior Carolin Walter (Bingen, Germany) captured a ranked win over UF's #20 Whitney Benik and Nina Suvak 8-4. Florida's only doubles victory took place on court two where the Gator's #39 Megan Alexander and Diana Srebrovic defeated sophomore Ania Rynarzewska (Inowroclaw, Poland) and freshman Lauren Macfarlane (Ogden, UT) 8-4.
"We made some switches in doubles a few weeks ago and it's good to see we're getting the doubles point," head coach Jennifer Hyde said. "That's the whole point. That's the reason we had some changes and it's working and working well."
Seminoles found a change of direction for the match in singles as Walter fell on court four to Florida's Benik 6-1, 6-3 while #63 Nicola Slater captured a ranked win on center court over #34 Diana Srebrovic of UF 6-4, 6-4. In position six Florida's Anastasia Revzina defeated Wente 7-5, 6-3 as Marobela fell in a tight match to UF's Nina Suvak 6-4, 7-6 (0). Clinching the overall victory for Florida was #26 Megan Alexander defeating #52 Rynarzewska in position two 6-3, 7-5.
"It's a heartbreaking loss, it's no question," coach Hyde said. "It's heartbreaking for everyone involved, the whole team. They know they can win that match and should have won that match. The great thing is, a year ago we lost to Florida 7-0 in a pretty quick and decisive match and today we had our opportunity to get the win against them and they just came up a little short. The effort was there, the heart was there, the fight was there, but we just came up short. We had chances at every position to be successful today one through six singles included."
Ending on a positive note, Florida State picked up three ranked wins through out the evening which included Macfarlane's defeat over the Gator's #55 Csilla Borsanyi 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
"Number one doubles had a ranked win as did Nicola [Slater]," coach Hyde said. "She just beat the number 34 player in the country and freshman Lauren Macfarlane beat number 55 in the country. Those are definitely high notes for the day. It's a big day today for Nicola today as a senior for her final home match against Florida to have a day like she did. Even though we had the loss, she has a lot of positive things to take from today, as does everyone."
Florida State women's tennis prepare to hit the road this weekend as they travel to Florida International on Friday, March 2 and later Sunday, March 4 the Seminoles will take on the Miami Hurricanes in Florida State's first Atlantic Coast Conference match of the season.
"We've got to keep doing what we've been doing and that's just hitting the courts as much as possible and getting individual hits in," coach Hyde said. "I have a very specific practice planned everyday keeping things competitive and just continuing to work because without the work we're not going to put ourselves in position to win."

Seminoles Pull Out Win In Dog Fight Verses FIU.
No. 50 Florida State wins final four singles matches to upset No. 28 Florida International.
MIAMI, FL - The No. 50 Florida State women's tennis team increased their record to 7-2 with a win over No. 28 Florida International (6-4) on Saturday, March 5. The Seminoles battled hard to win the final four singles matches to come on top of the Golden Panthers.
"The conditions today were a little difficult," stated head coach Jennifer Hyde. "We had to adjust to the wind; in all of the positions we did a pretty good job of playing with the windy conditions. More then anything, I don't think we played our best tennis, but we played with complete heart, tons of heart and that is why we won today. We just had a little bit more heart then they did. We were willing to stay out there for one more ball."
FIU received the doubles point with two wins over FSU. Senior Nicola Slater (Ayr, Scotland) and junior Carolin Walter (Bingen, Germany) won 8-4 against Egle Petrauskaite and Priscilla Castillo. Sophomore Ania Rynarzewska (Inowroclaw, Poland) and freshman Lauren Macfarlane fell 3-8 to Paula Zabala and Nikkita Fountain.
Although freshman-senior duo Jessica Wente (Whitehouse, Texas) and Miranda Foley (Cambridge, England) fell 7-9 against Shilla D'Armas and Marijana Cutuk, they were down 5-1 at one point and fought back to 7-5 and had a few match points to win the match but ended losing.
Singles matches began with losses for Slater and Rynarzewska against Zabala and Petrauskaite, respectively. Rynarzewska fought a tough second set but fell 0-6, 4-6. Slater went down in a tough battle as well losing 5-7, 3-6. At this point of the match, Florida International was winning 3-0.
Wente came off of the courts next for the Seminoles with a decisive win over Maria Dolores Pazo 6-4, 6-2. Shortly after she won, Macfarlane clinched her win in the three spot over Cutuk 6-2, 6-4. Walter had a solid first set and then went neck and neck in the second set winning 6-2, 7-6.
Junior Tapiwa Marobela (Gaborone, Botswana) clinched the winning point by battling it out with Priscilla Castillo. Marobela won the first set 6-2, fell in the second set 6-7 and came back in the third set to win 7-5. In the second set, she was down one point at 2-5 and came back but fell short. Marobela had a very good service game and solid return game. Three hours and thirty minutes later, Marobela served it out for the 7-5 win.
"It was a big win for our program today," continued Hyde. "FIU is a very good team, very deep team and very competitive team. At the end of the day it was a battle of will for Tapiwa (Marobela) with the last point and everyone off the court and the team score tied 3-3. It was a battle of will of who wanted it most and who was willing to hit one more ball on the court. She had a tremendous amount of fight today. Having all that pressure on your shoulder is something that each girl is going to experience in their career and Marobela handled it very well today."
Florida State stays in south Florida this week with a match against the University of Miami on Tuesday, March 6 at 11 a.m.
