Noles Split Home Opener vs. Georgia Tech.
by Layne Herdt
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The (No. 18/RV) Florida State swimming and diving teams split the 2020 season opener against (RV/NR) Georgia Tech on Friday afternoon at the Morcom Aquatics Center.
The men (1-0, 1-0 ACC) outlasted the Yellow Jackets, 152-147, while the women (0-1, 0-1 ACC) fell 176-124.
"I thought we did really well," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "I thought we fought really hard. We had some of our top athletes out. 2020 is different and we've got to go with what we've got. I'm excited with how they competed in this first meet of the year."
In the men's meet, the Seminoles jumped out to an early lead, winning five of the first seven swimming events, including four by ways of first and second place.
Florida State started by taking major first and second place points in both the 200 medley relay and 1000 free.
The team of freshman Mason Herbet, junior Izaak Bastian, sophomore Domen Demsar and junior Jakub Ksiazek (1:29.01) won the 200 medley relay ahead of junior Jackson Lucas, senior Jackson Seith, freshman Rush Clark and sophomore Blake Moran (1:31.62).
Rookies David Quirie (9:25.31) and Zach Smith (9:25.80) paced with each other and swam a one-two showing in the 1000 free.
Georgia Tech won the 200 free, the Seminoles answered with another one-two finish as Herbet led the charge in the 100 back (48.20) ahead of Lucas (50.28) in second place.
Bastian added a victory in the 100 breast (55.40) and Ksiazek (20.69) and Demsar (20.87) closed the early portion of the meet by placing first and second in the 50 free.
Senior Joshua Davidson led the Noles in 1-meter diving, scoring 325.50 for first place, ahead of freshman Jesco Helling (273.53) in third place and rookie Darwin Nolasco (270.83) in fifth.
The Yellow Jackets gained ground by winning the next two events, but sophomore Nick Vance dominated the 200 back, winning with a time of 1:48.57. Redshirt freshman Noah Young made his debut in the Garnet and Gold, touching in third place at 1:54.03, ahead of Jackson (1:57.52), who secured key fourth place points.
Bastian turned in a second place finish in the 200 breast (2:04.23), but Georgia Tech would not quit and added a one-two punch in the 500 free.
The Seminoles surrendered a victory in the 100 fly, but thanks to the depth in the event, the Noles were able to limit the damage as junior Max McCusker (48.56), Herbet (48.75) and Demsar (50.60) finished in second, third and fourth place, respectively.
After the final break, Vance (1:49.76), Herbet (1:51.66) and Lucas (1:54.04) placed second, third and fourth in the 200 IM, just putting the meet out of reach for the Yellow Jackets heading into the final relay.
FSU would take second place in the 400 free relay behind, McCusker, Ksiazek, Demsar and sophomore Aziz Ghaffari (2:59.87), taking the meet by five points.
Without key swimmers in the women's meet, the Noles had to switch around the lineup and call upon its freshmen to step up.
The Seminoles bested the Yellow Jackets in the sprints, finishing in first, second and third place in the 100 free behind senior Rebecca Moynihan (51.73) leading the way, followed by freshman Gabrianna Banks (52.46) in second and senior Emma Terebo (52.53) in third.
Prior to the 100 free, Moynihan (23.56) and Banks (23.84) added a one-two punch in the 50 free.
Rookie Samantha Vear was the winner on 1-meter in her collegiate debut, scoring a tally of 253.30.
"We've been back for three full weeks of practice," FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. "We're on the second sentence of the first paragraph of page one. I think they did a great job. There were certain points that we didn't think that any of this was going to happen and here we are. It's nice to be back in here and for these guys to have to opportunity to do what they love to do."
Freshman Phoebe Griffiths turned in a pair of close runner-up finishes, touching with a time of 1:51.60 in the 200 free, just four-one-hundredths off the win. She later took second in the 500 free at 4:57.12 by one one-hundredth.
Her countryman and classmate Pia Murray also added two second place showings in the backstroke events, touching with a time of 56.02 in the 100 and 2:01.94 in the 200.
FSU added a victory in the 400 free relay to close out the meet behind senior Ana Zortea, Griffiths, Terebo, and Moynihan with a time of 3:28.32.
"All-in-all, I'm excited with what we saw today," Studd added. "We still have things to fix and but it's great the season is here and we're getting things going. We're thankful and grateful we get to do this. We're happy we're back and it's nice to get a win."

No. 16 Men Defeat LSU, No. 22 Women Tie.
The 200 medley relay, David Quirie and Peter Varjasi set Morcom Aquatics Center pool.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No.16 Florida State men's swimming and diving team (3-0, 1-0 ACC) picked up its third win of the season on Friday, defeating RV LSU 170.5-91.5 at the Morcom Aquatics Center. The No. 22 FSU women (1-1-1, 0-1 ACC) tied the RV Tigers 131-131 as both teams competed in swimming events only.
"I thought we had a pretty good day," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "We've only been back in the water this week and I liked what I saw. We lost at LSU last year on the women's side, so for us to tie is a step in the right direction. We had some great swims from both teams and I am really proud of the effort."
The men's team set three Morcom Aquatics Center records in the win, as the team of freshman Mason Herbet, junior Izaak Bastian, sophomore Domen Demsar and sophomore Peter Varjasi started the meet off with a new record of 1:26.85 in the 200 medley relay. The Noles took down the mark of 1:27.30 set by Alabama on Jan. 12, 2018.
Varjasi also set a new record in the 50 free at 19.76 and freshman David Quirie set the new standard in the 1650 free at 15:29.19. Varjasi erased Chad Mylin's 19.90 (Jan. 27, 2018) and Quirie took down Alabama's Nico Tome-Hernandez's mark of 15:38.90 (Jan. 12, 2020).
Varjasi also won the 100 free (43.69) and was a part 200 free relay (1:19.76) team victory.
The Seminoles won 10 of the 14 events against the Tigers, including a pair sweeps.
FSU finished first and second in the 100 back behind Herbet (48.05) and senior Jackson Lucas (48.42).
Lucas also led the one-two showing in the 200 back with a time of 1:47.54, followed by sophomore Nick Vance (1:49.16).
Vance led from wire-to-wire in the 200 fly, touching at 1:46.64. He was also the runner-up in the 200 IM at 1:49.86.
FSU swept the 50 free as sophomore Blake Moran (20.37) and junior Jakub Ksiazek (20.39) finished second and third behind Varjasi (19.76).
Sophomore Adrian Aquilar picked up his first collegiate dual meet victory, winning the 500 free from lane one with a time of 4:31.79. Quirie followed in third place at 4:34.64 and freshman will Hoogenboom took fourth (4:37.05).
The Seminoles put up a complete sweep of the 100 fly, as junior Max McCusker was the winner at 47.19, followed by freshman Rush Clark (48.70) in second, Herbet (48.76) in third and Demsar (48.82) in fourth.
The women jumped out to an early lead after finishing in first and second place in the 200 medley relay.
The team of sophomore Tania Quaglieri, freshman Zsofia Kurdi, senior Elise Olsen and junior Kertu Alnek touched with a time of 1:40.09 ahead of senior Emma Terebo, junior Madison Blakesley, freshman Jenny Halden and senior Rebecca Moynihan at 1:40.69.
Freshman Phoebe Griffiths (17:04.74), junior Maggie Emary (17:10.56) and junior Stephanie Holmes (17:11.72) placed second, third and fourth, respectively in the 1650 free.
After LSU won the 200 free, the Seminoles answered with a one-two showing in the 100 back, led by junior Maddie McDonald in first (54.53) and Quaglieri (55.15) in second.
The Tigers claimed the 100 breast and 200 fly, but FSU answered with another first and second place performance in the 50 free, as Moynihan touched first (23.14) and Terebo (23.24) second.
Alnek (50.86), Moynihan (51.39) and Terebo (51.52) were second, third and fourth in the 100 free before McDonald won her second event of the meet, claiming the 200 back (1:58.09) ahead of freshman Pia Murray (1:59.22), who placed second.
"Maddie had a very nice meet," Studd said. "She had two really solid swims and a great anchor leg of the relay."
The Tigers picked up big points after sweeping the 200 breast, and 500 free, claiming the slight edge over the Noles 107-100.
FSU pulled back ahead after Halden (54.50) and Olsen (54.59) posted another one-two finish.
"Elise has really stepped up," Studd added. "After being injured, she's having a great comeback season."
However, LSU answered with a one-two finish in the 200 IM, leaving the meet to be decided by the final 200 free relay.
"We went for the win," Studd said. "We are deep in the 50 free and we switched a few things around in order to try and get the W."
LSU led for the first two legs of the 200 free relay, but the team of Kurdi, Alnek, Halden and McDonald pulled out the win with a time of 1:31.36.
The Tigers followed in second (1:32.04) and the team of freshman Gabrianna Banks, Olsen, Quaglieri and Moynihan took third, tying the meet.

Divers Close Out Regular Season at Georgia Tech.
ATLANTA, Ga. - The Florida State divers concluded regular season competition on Saturday with one final contest against ACC foes Georgia Tech and Miami. The two-day meet was hosted at the McAuley Aquatic Center.
"This was a good tune-up for our divers before we start championship season," FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. "Both Miami and Georgia Tech have some of the best divers in the conference and I'm glad our guys had the opportunity to compete in this setting before we head to the big show."
On Friday, both teams competed in both 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events.
Senior Joshua Davidson led the way for the No. 15 Noles, finishing third in both 1-meter (342.65) and 3-meter (379.15).
In his first event, Davidson had three dives that received marks of 7.0 or higher, including a 68.20-scoring inward 2 ½ somersault in the final round. He later came back to tally 379.15 on 3-meter, as five of his six dives went for 6.5 or higher.
His freshman teammate Jesco Helling followed just behind him in fourth place on 1-meter with a score of 327.15. Helling put together one of his best rounds of the year, scoring 6.0 or higher on four of his dives. On 3-meter, Helling was seventh with a total of 346.20.
Freshman Darwin Nolasco tallied 280.95 for eighth place on 1-meter and followed that performance with a score of 353.70 on 3-meter.
The No. 21 women first competed on 3-meter and were led by freshman Kayleigh Clark in sixth place with a total of 271.45, scoring her best marks on her back 2 ½ somersault tuck that went for 58.80 total points.
Clark also put up the highest score on 1-meter with a tally of 275.55 for third place. All six of her dives scored above 40 points, and it was her highest 1-meter total in competition this season.
Freshman Vivian Johnson followed Clark in in seventh place on 3-meter (268.15) and her classmates Brooke Goedel (247.00) was 10th and Samantha Vear (237.15) was 12th.
Johnson was also seventh on 1-meter (243.30) followed by Goedel in ninth (236.95).
On Saturday, both teams competed on platform.
Clark performed all of her five dives between the 5-meter and 7-meter platforms, scoring 221.75 for fifth place.
Goedel (208.95) finished in sixth after her back 2 ½ somersault twister from 10-meter scored marks of 6.5.
Vear was seventh (196.95) and Johnson (192.00) took eighth.
Nolasco was the lone platform diver in the men's competition for the Noles, where three of his dives went for marks of 6.0 or higher. His best dive came in the third round, tallying 67.50 points on a front 3 ½ somersault from 10-meter. He finished seventh with a total of 288.45.

Noles Off to Solid Start at ACCs.
February 17, 2021
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The RV Florida State women's swimming and diving team had a strong showing in two relays at the 2021 ACC Championships on Wednesday evening at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
The Seminoles opened the night by winning the second heat of the 200 medley relay from lane two behind sophomore Tania Quaglieri, junior Hannah Womer and seniors Elise Olsen and Rebecca Moynihan with an NCAA provisional time of 1:36.97.
FSU would finish the race fourth overall behind Virginia, NC State and Louisville after dropping nearly two seconds from their seed time (1:38.90).
Quaglieri also clocked her career best 50 back split at 24.26, which was the fastest leadoff in the race in school history.
"We had an amazing 200 medley relay," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "The ladies came in and crushed it and moved us up big time. We had great splits across the board and a special 21.6 from our captain to anchor it home."
The Noles came back in the 800 free relay to finish eighth behind freshman Phoebe Griffiths, Quaglieri, Womer, and junior Kertu Alnek with a time of 7:13.57.
Griffiths led off with a personal best in the 200 free at 1:46.54, which is the second fastest time in school history behind the record holder Katilyn Dressel at 1:45.13, which was set back in 2015.
"That race was a huge improvement for us from last year," Studd said. "We dropped nine seconds. The 200 free is a new event for Tania and she was awesome. Hannah was solid too, but her 50 breast split in the medley was very nice."
Men's diving also took place on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Joshua Davidson finished in sixth place on 1-meter with a score of 332.20.
Davidson advanced to the final in third place after scoring 343.55 in prelims.
In finals, Davidson sat in seventh place before slipping to eighth after the third round. The Tomball, Texas, native, rallied and scored 58.50 points on his front 2 1/2 somersault to move back into seventh.
Davidson added 54.00 points on his front 3 1/2 in the fifth round to climb to sixth, before finishing with a 69.50-scoring inward 2 1/2 for a total of 332.20.
Freshman Darwin Nolasco finished in 12th place, scoring 306.20, while his classmate Jesco Helling scored 17th place points at 292.90.
"Our guys had a solid first day," FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. "Darwin and Jesco were right on the brink of making finals as freshmen. They have both improved so much. Josh was his usual old faithful self and did a good job in prelims, just wasn't able to finish it off today. All three are very much looking forward to 3-meter tomorrow."
"Overall it was a great start for us," Studd added. "We are going to make the most of it and compete hard tomorrow."
After three events, the Seminoles are in 10th place with a score of 96 points.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior Rebecca Moynihan lead the RV Florida State swimming and diving team on the second night of the 2021 Women's ACC Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Moynihan swam the four fastest times in the 50 free of her career that included an eighth place finish behind her best of 22.38 in her first ACC Championship final.
The team captain later matched that time, leading off the 200 free relay that finished in fifth place with a time of 1:29.28 along with freshman Zsofia Kurdi, sophomore Tania Quaglieri and senior Emma Terebo.
Individually, Moynihan's performance was an NCAA B standard and now ranks fourth in school history.
Moynihan came into the meet seeded 22nd at 22.99 and established a new personal best at 22.45 in prelims, to qualify in seventh place, becoming the first to compete in the A- Final of the event since Kaitlyn Dressel won bronze back in 2015.
The Palmerston North, New Zealand, native, also added a time trial of the 50 free at the end of the night, touching in at 22.49, which was still faster than her previous personal best of 22.75.
"We had another great day," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "The ladies were awesome. Rebecca had some great swims today and she really deserves it. She works so hard every day. We're looking forward to what should be a strong day for us tomorrow."
In addition to Moynihan, the Seminoles were represented individually by senior Emma Terebo, junior Hannah Womer, freshman Phoebe Griffiths and Kurdi at finals.
Griffiths qualified for the consolation heat of the 500 free in 12th place out of the heats, with a time of 4:46.59, which was slightly off her best (4:46.16).
Working from lane six at night, Griffiths took over the lead at the 150-yard mark, but was challenged and passed by Louisville's Liberty Williams near the turn at the 350. Griffiths touched in second in the heat and 10th overall with a personal best of 4:44.91, which is an NCAA B standard and fourth fastest time in school history.
Womer turned in her best time in the 200 IM in prelims at (NCAA B) 1:59.74, which ranks ninth in school history. In the B-Final, The San Jose, California, native touched in seventh for 15th overall, holding her place, with a time of 2:00.17.
Kurdi made her ACC debut by finishing 15th in the 50 free with a time of 22.71 after clocking her personal best in prelims at 22.70. Terebo added 22nd place points with a time of 22.62, which was a season best. Both Seminoles swam NCAA B standards in the event.
Senior Joshua Davidson along with freshmen Jesco Helling and Darwin Nolasco competed on 3-meter.
Helling led the way for the Noles, finishing in 13th place with a score of 319.25 just ahead of Davidson in 14th at 318.60. Nolasco was 24th with a total of 290.00.
Florida State sits in ninth place with a total of 214 points, trailing closely behind Miami (238), No. 14 North
Carolina (244.5), No. 13 Notre Dame (276) and No. 24 Duke (290).

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Florida State sophomore Tania Quaglieri became the fastest Seminole in history in the 100 back, clocking a time of 52.17 at the 2021 Women's ACC Championships and the Greensboro Aquatic Center on Friday.
Quaglieri advanced to the championship heat of the 100 back in eighth place after swimming a personal best of 52.97 in prelims.
Working from lane eight at night, Quaglieri used her speed in the front half of the race to set the tone.
The Nonatola, Italy, native, touched in sixth place (52.17), dropping almost two seconds from her seed time (53.90) in order to set the school record. She took down McKayla Lightbourn's mark of 52.39 that was set back in 2014.
"Tania was something special today," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "I'm so excited for her and the new school record."
In addition to Quaglieri, freshmen Ginevra Molino and Phoebe Griffiths swam in their first career ACC Championship finals. It was the first time FSU had three compete in A-Finals on Friday of ACCs since 2015.
Molino qualified in sixth place with a time of 4:14.25 out of prelims, which was slightly off her personal best (4:13.73).
Swimming in lane seven, Molino was in a tight race for sixth during most of the race. She finished strong in order to touch seventh with a new best time of 4:13.54, which ranks fourth in school history.
Molino was also the first Seminole to race in the 400 IM A-Final since Julia Henkel in 2014, who finished sixth after taking bronze in 2013. Henkel was also the last rookie to swim for gold in the race in 2011.
Griffiths posted a time of 1:47.07 in the morning heats, qualifying sixth for the top heat. The London, England, native was just off that mark in finals, touching seventh at 1:47.17.
Earlier in the meet, Griffiths swam her personal best as the lead-off leg of the 800 free relay earlier in the meet at 1:46.54, which was the second fastest time in school history.
The Seminoles started off the night with two swimmers in the consolation heat of the 100 fly.
Freshman Jenny Halden clocked a 53.62 in the heats to qualify 10th, while senior Elise Olsen touched with a season best of 53.01 for 13th. At night, both Seminoles were just off their prelim times, as Halden placed 11th at 52.84 ahead of Olsen in 14th at 53.10.
Sophomore Sydney VanOvermeiren put together a strong back half of the 400 IM, touching in third place of the consolation heat with a time of 4:14.82, which was just over a half-second faster than her performance in the morning (4:15.39). Junior Maggie Emary made her first appearance in an ACC final heat, posting a career best for 19th place at 4:18.77.
Junior Kertu Alnek swam in the bonus heat of the 200 free, where she improved to finish in 22nd place with a time of 1:48.51 after qualifying in the last spot a 1:49.37.
Freshman Zsofia Kurdi saw a big drop in the 100 breast in finals, touching at 1:01.50 for 18th place overall, which was a career best. Her performance was the 10th fastest in school history.
The Seminoles showed their depth in the 100 back as three others competed in the final heats in addition to Quaglieri.
Senior Emma Terebo and junior Madeleine McDonald battled in the B-Final of the 100 back, while freshman Pia Murry competed in the C-Final.
Terebo came off the last turn as one of the leaders and surged to the finish to get her hand on the wall first, behind a season best of 53.01 for ninth overall.
McDonald finished in 16th place at 53.53, which was also a season best. Murray clocked a 54.22 for 21st, which was just off her career best in prelims at 53.85.
The Seminoles competed in the 400 medley relay, but was disqualified.
"We had a really great day," Studd said. "We scored a lot of points and we had a lot of lifetime bests. The ladies have been doing an awesome job. We look forward to finishing strong tomorrow."
FSU remains in ninth place with a score of 380 points, trailing closely behind Georgia Tech
(391) and No.13 North Carolina (399.5).
February 20, 2021
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The 2021 Women's ACC Swimming and Diving Championships came to a close on Saturday night for the RV Florida State swimming and diving team at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
The Seminoles had 10 scoring individual swims in addition to the 400 free relay on the final night of the meet in order to jump No. 13 North Carolina (516.5) and Georgia Tech (498) to finish in seventh place with a score of 551.
"We finished off really well," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "Passing two teams in overall points and we only scored four points less than last year without divers and we DQed a relay. We're really excited for the future of this team."
Junior Maddie McDonald led off the night with a personal best time in the 200 back at (NCAA B) 1:55.33 for 11th overall. The time moves her up to third on the FSU All-Time Top 10 list.
The Seminoles had six swimmers score in the 100 free for the first time in school history.
In the consolation heat, sophomore Tania Quaglieri, junior Kertu Alnek and senior Rebecca Moynihan qualified next to each other in lanes one, two and three while freshman Zsofia Kurdi swam in lane six.
Quaglieri used that early speed from the outside and held on to win the heat with a career best of 49.17, just ahead of Moynihan in second at 49.26.
Quaglieri's time now ranks her fifth in school history, while Moynihan is seventh. Both are NCAA provisional times.
Kurdi also clocked a personal best at 49.45 placing 13th with an NCAA B standard, just ahead of Alenk in 14th at 49.58.
In the bonus heat, senior Emma Terebo also went out for the lead from lane one and would touch first behind a season best of 49.23. Sophomore Jenny Halden placed 24th at 50.34 after clocking a 50.22 in prelims.
Junior Hannah Womer swam a personal best in the 200 fly in prelims of 1:58.97 in order to qualify for the C-Final. At night, Womer was off her seed time, finishing 23rd at 2:00.44. Her morning swim is the eighth fastest in school history.
In the early heats of the 1650 free, freshman Phoebe Griffiths swam her best time at 16:33.57 for 11th place just ahead of sophomore Maggie Emary in 14th at 16:39.39, who also swam her lifetime best after a strong back half of the race.
Griffiths' time was good for seventh on the FSU All-Time Top 10 list.
The team of Kurdi, Terebo, Alnek and Moynihan closed out the night finishing fifth in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:17.43.
Freshmen Darwin Nolasco and Jesco Helling competed in the men's platform event this afternoon. Nolasco took ninth place, while Helling scored 13th place points.
"For being freshmen and having to train all year in a pandemic, they did a really good job today," FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. "Darwin was just two points out of the final and Jesco just went out there and did a list without training."
After his first two dives from 5-meter, Nolasco was near last place with a total of 67.50 points, however on his next three dives from 10-meter, he received marks between 5.5-6.5 in order to climb into 13th place with one round to go.
Nolasco finished with a 6.0-scoring back 2 1/2 somersault twister that went for 57.60 points, bringing his total to 298.80 for ninth place, just under two points shy of the final.
"Darwin was one dive away from that final," Proctor said. "When he got here, he needed to learn how to do a few dives. If he gets 4.0's instead of 2.0's on that back 2 1/2 from 5-meter, he's in that final. But he got back on track with his next dive and he climbed out of that hole. The rest of his dives were solid."
Helling has been sidelined all season from platform due to injury, however the German felt he could compete.
"He came to me after 3-meter and said he wanted to try platform," Proctor added. "He did a lead up on 5-meter and didn't feel any pain and wanted to go today. So he threw together a list and wasn't too far off the final either."
Doing all six rounds from 5-meter, Helling scored 6.0 on five of his dives for a total of 293.50.
