FSU Names Neal Studd as Head Coach.
July 20, 2016
TALLAHASSEE, FL -- Neal Studd, a five-time Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Coach of the Year at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), has been named head coach of Florida State’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving program by Vice President and Director of Athletics Stan Wilcox today.
Studd, a native of Ipswich, United Kingdom, led FGCU’s women’s program to six CCSA Championships (2009-13, 15) and a 28-1 all-time conference record since beginning the program at the Ft. Myers, Fla., school in 2007.
“We are pleased to welcome coach Studd and his family to FSU,” said Wilcox. “Coach Studd has an outstanding reputation both within our state and nationally. He has a proven track record of success and we believe he will be a great fit to lead our highly-competitive program to the next level.”
Studd coached St. Lucia in the 2012 Olympic Games as well as his former FGCU swimmer Danielle Beaubrun. It marked his second international coaching stint with St. Lucia after serving as the country’s head coach at the World Championships in Shanghai, China in 2011.
“I am thrilled to be the new head coach at FSU,” said Studd. “It is an amazing opportunity for me professionally and for my family personally. To be in a position to lead the program at such a prestigious University that combines truly outstanding academics and athletics is really a dream come true for me.
“I cannot wait to meet and start working with the team and put my own brand and coaching style in place. When I look at the success of all the teams at FSU, I am so excited for what is possible with our swimming and diving teams. I know we can do great things here and do it the right way.”
Studd was selected to begin the women’s swimming and diving program at FGCU in 2006 after spending eight seasons with the swimming staff at his alma mater Florida Atlantic University (FAU).
An outstanding sprints swimmer at FAU from 1994-98, Studd set several varsity records, served as the men’s team captain and was a National Independent Conference (NIC) champion and two-time Olympic Trials qualifier.
Studd earned a B.S. in Finance from FAU in 1998 and his MBA from the school in 2002. He and his wife Leah have two children together, daughter Sophia (2) and
son Henry, born November 2013.

Florida State University swimming and diving has terminated their contract with their Head Coach, Frank Bradley, who had one year left in his contract with the Seminoles. After taking the job in 2013, Bradley has been the Head Coach of both the men’s and women’s team for the last 3 NCAA seasons.
Over the last 2 seasons, FSU has gone from a top 3 team in the ACC to sitting just inside the top 10. The women earned their highest rankings of the past 5 years with their 3rd place finishes at the ACC Championships in 2012 and 2014. In 2014-15, they fell to 7th before moving down to 9th at ACCs in the 2015-16 season. At the NCAA championships, they improved on their 30th place finish from 2014 with 24th overall in 2015. However, they were unable to place at the 2016 NCAA Championships, having no scoring swimmers or divers.
This season, the women were without NCAA All-American Chelsea Britt, who was a finalist at the 2015 NCAA Championships in both butterfly events. Britt took a red-shirt this year before announcing her intention to transfer out of the ACC. Along with Britt, Gracie Redding and Daniella van den Berg have also made the decision to transfer. Both Redding and van den Berg will make the move to FGCU.
The men’s team has followed a similar pattern, placing 6th at 2015 ACCs and 9th at the 2016 meet. They were consistently in the top 5 in the 3 years prior to that, earning 3rd place at ACCs in 2014. At NCAAs in 2014, they swam to 14th overall. Most recently, they tied with Hawaii for 31st at the 2016 NCAA Championships. Their only swimmer at that meet was Jason Coombs, who announced his retirement following his junior season.
Florida State Director of Athletics Stan Wilcox confirmed today that Frank Bradley will not return for a fourth season as the Seminoles’ Head Swimming Coach in 2016-17.
FSU finished ninth in the ACC in both men’s and women’s swimming and diving this past season. The men’s team went on to finish 31st at the NCAA Championships, while the women’s team did not score at the NCAA meet.
University policy on personnel decisions prevents further comment on the coaching change.
The Athletics Department will move
forward immediately with a national search to fill the position of Head Swimming Coach.

TALLAHASSEE, FL – With alumni on hand, the Florida State swimming and diving teams fell to Florida in the Sunshine Showdown presented by Fresh from Florida, in tight hard-fought battle at the Morcom Aquatics Center on Thursday, 157-143 (women), 170-130 (men).
“We fell short but we really did some awesome things today,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “It was our first time competing, but there was a lot of grit. We got beat in some places where we swam great. This was about us getting better. This was an incredible first step and it was an incredible first meet for me.”
The women’s meet started with FSU winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.56 behind the team of juniors Ariel Barber, Natalie Pierce, senior Lydia Ware and junior Alexi Smith.
The Gators answered with a one-two punch in the 1000 free, however sophomore Michelle Turek picked up her first win as a Seminole, taking the 200 free with a time of 1:49.61.
Pierce won the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.35, while junior Christina Loh followed in second with a 1:03.07.
After surrendering a one-two finish in the 200 fly, the Seminoles picked up some momentum with a sweep in the 50 free as freshman Nika Blank took home the win with a time of 23.34. Smith followed in second (23.39) and Ware was third (23.44).
Following the break, the Seminoles stayed hot in the sprints, posting another sweep in the 100 free as junior Brenna Ruth swam a 51.24, for her first career dual meet win. Blank was second (51.51) and Turek touched in third (51.59).
Florida answered with a one-two finish in the 200 back.
Loh rallied to win 200 breast with a time of 2:16.93, while Pierce grabbed third with a time of 2:17.84.
The Gators went into the final break with a 10-point lead after sweeping the 500 free and winning the 100 fly. Ware was second with a career best time of 55.48 and sophomore Lelia Johnston was third at 56.11.
In diving, freshman Ayla Bonniwell was victorious in her first collegiate meet, scoring 296.40 on 3-meter, while the Seminoles placed second, third and fourth on 1-meter as junior Blaire Mulka led with a score of 274.35. Redshirt junior Alexia Gonzalez returned to the lineup placing third (271.28) and Bonniewell was fourth (253.50).
Florida State made a push in the 400 free relay, winning with the team of Ruth, Turek, Blank and Ware with a final time of 3:23.44, but the deficit too big overcome after the Gators swept the 200 IM.
“Winning relays is huge,” Studd said. “We won some great races, on both sides which was awesome. We had alumni here cheering us on today and they’re proud of what our teams did.”
The men produced five wins and eight second place showings in the 16 events, including a sweep in the 100 free and 3-meter diving.
Senior Jason McCormick won the 100 free with a time of 44.37, just ahead of sophomore Emir Muratovic in second (45.33) and sophomore Kanoa Kaleoaloha was third.

“Somedays you’re a windshield and some days you’re a bug, today Tyler was absolutely the windshield,” FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. “He tweaked a few things over the summer and man it really showed out there. It’s early in our season but I thought our kids did well and competed hard.”
Junior Connor Kalisz won the 200 back leading from start to finish, touching with a time of 1:47.57.

History Made on First Day
December 02, 2016
ATHENS, GA – The Florida State swimming and diving teams made history on the first night of the Georgia Fall Invite at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on Friday. The men’s 200 free relay started the night by punching its ticket to the 2017 NCAA Championships with an automatic qualifying time of 1:17.33 before the women’s 400 medley relay set a new school record with a time of 3:33.43.
The team of senior Jason McCormick, sophomore Kanoa Kaleoaloha, junior Chad Mylin and sophomore Will Pisani grabbed second in the event en route to securing a relay spot at the NCAA Championships for the first time since the 2013-14 season.
McCormick led off with a personal best time of 19.45 while Mylin’s split was the fastest in the field and of his career, clocking a blazing, 18.86.
Juniors Ariel Barber, Natalie Pierce and Tayla Lovemore along with senior Lydia Ware closed out the night by taking down the school record in the 400 medley relay that was set in 2014 by Bianca Spinazzola, Samantha Pochowski, Chelsea Britt and Kaitlyn Dressel at 3:34.02.
Barber led off with a career best time of 54.22 before Pierce (57.91), Lovemore (52.25) and Ware (49.05) followed with theirs. Together, they finished fifth.
“It was just an amazing day of racing,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “Today was about a bunch of student-athletes having fun and believing in themselves. I couldn’t be prouder of what they did today.”
In addition to the pair of relays, the Seminoles had 11 performances that made the all-time top 10 list.
Individually, the men started the night with junior Calvin Bryant competing in the top heat of the 500 free, moving up to seventh with a time of 4:23.56.
Sophomore Max Polianski made his debut in the Garnet and Gold, placing 12th in the 200 IM with a time of 1:46.09.
Three Seminoles competed in the championship final as Mylin finished third in the individual 50 free with a time of 19.54 while McCormick followed in fourth at 19.57. Kaleoaloha finished eighth with a final mark of 20.23.
In the B final, sophomore Emir Muratovic set a new career best with a time of 19.98, finishing 10th while Pisani was 12th at 20.08 which was his personal best.
Three of the FSU all-time top 10 performances came in the women’s 200 IM led by sophomore Meg Brown, who won the C final with the third fastest mark with a personal best of 1:58.96. Ware also turned in her best in prelims at 1:59.08, which ranks fifth all-time. She was 13th at finals with a time of 1:59.94.
In addition to Brown and Ware, Lovemore finished 19th, posting a time of 2:00.72, which was good enough for the 10th fastest swim all-time.
Lovemore came back and won the consolation heat of the 50 free, swimming a 22.10, just missing the school record by eight-one hundredths of a second.
“This is one of our best events,” Studd said. “With those times from Jason, Chad and Tayla, we’re optimistic they’ll earn the individual NCAA invite.”
Three Seminoles earned second swims in the 500 free as sophomore Michelle Turek placed 16th with a final time of 4:54.03 after turning in her personal best in prelims of 4:50.16.
Senior Katy Stringfield and Alex Wittman competed in the C final as Stringfield placed 21st with a personal best of 4:51.27 while Wittman finished 24th (4:55.21).
In the women’s 3-meter springboard, freshman Ayla Bonniewell placed seventh with a score of 280.50 while junior Blaire Mulka was 14th at 257.10.

“It was great to see this team back on top again,” Studd said. “This was an incredible day and we can’t wait for tomorrow.”
December 03, 2016
ATHENS, GA – The Florida State swimming and diving teams continued to make history on the second day of the Georgia Fall Invite at the Gabrielsen Natatorium.
“It was just another great day for us,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “We had some amazing swims across the board. We got a few more NCAA qualifiers and more school records. I couldn’t have asked for a better day.”
The Seminoles set three school records and earned three more NCAA automatic times standards on Saturday as junior Natalie Pierce smashed the school record in the 100 breaststroke preliminary round by over two seconds with a time of 58:37. This puts her second nationally, behind 2016 Olympic Champion Lilly King of Indiana. Pierce placed second in the finals with 59:16.
She broke Sami Pochowski’s mark of 1:00.49 that was set back in 2015.
“We’ve been working on a few things,” Studd said. “But I think the key for her is she’s enjoying herself while she’s competing and having fun.”
Starting off finals, junior Ariel Barber, Pierce, junior Tayla Lovermore, and senior Lydia Ware continued their strong showing from Friday night by setting a new school record in the 200 medley relay. The team swam a mark of 1:36:58, which automatically qualifies them to the 2017 NCAA Championships.
The women’s 200 free relay team of freshman Nika Blank, Ware, Lovemore and junior Alexi Smith were just under the NCAA A standard in the morning time trial, touching with a time of 1:28.97 for another FSU record.
Sophomore Meg Brown swam in the top heat of the 400 IM, placing fifth with a time of 4:11.37 while senior Caroline Neil took 11th at 4:18.87.
Lovemore came back, posting her personal best in the 100 fly, touching with a time of 52.02, which is the second fastest all-time. Ware also scored a career best in prelims of 53.56, but touched in 13th place at finals with a mark of 54.01. Sophomore Leila Johnston followed in 15th (54.58).
Sophomore Michelle Turek was the lone Seminole competing in finals of the 200 free. She placed 18th with a final time of 1:47.74.
In addition to Pierce, junior Christina Loh followed in third with a time of 1:00.47. Loh’s new personal record was also under the previous school record by Pochowski and now ranks her second all-time.
Barber added a win in the B final of the 100 back beating her personal best by over a second swimming a 53.95.
The men’s team started the night off with a runner-up finish in the 200 medley relay behind the team of seniors Stefan Stojmenovic, Jason Coombs, freshman Nate Samson, and junior Chad Mylin finished second at 1:25:63.
Sophomore Max Polinski continued to improve in his first collegiate outing by posting a time of 3:49.48, which is good enough for fourth on FSU’s all-time top 10.
Stojmenovic placed 15th in his first of two individual races on the night, touching with a time of 47.83 in the 100 fly.
Four earned second swims in the 200 free, including sophomores Kanoa Kaleoaloha, Emir Muratovic, senior Jemal Le Grand, and junior Calvin Bryant. Kaleoaloha led the way, tying for 13th at 1:37.48 after swimming a personal best time in prelims of 1:36.88.
Coombs was back to his ways, by swimming a 52.71 finishing fourth in the A heat of the 100 breast. Senior Jason McCormick (54.18), junior Rafa Van Leeuwarde (55.13), and freshman Matt Ankerholz (55.75) finishing 11th, 15th and 16th respectively.
In diving, junior Tyler Roberge led for the men, placing second on 3-meter with a final score of 347.90. Senior Dylan Grisell followed in fifth place (339.50) while freshman Aidan Faminoff was 10th at 319.20.
The women competed on 1-meter, as Ayla Bonniwell led the way with a score of 272.85 for fifth place. Sophomore Cassidy Gebhart placed seventh with
a total of 261.15.

ATHENS, GA – The 2016 Georgia Fall Invite came to a close on Sunday night at the Gabrielsen Natatorium, but not before the Florida State swimming and diving teams could write a little more history.
“We’re just very happy with a great weekend of racing,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better first semester out of this team. I appreciate their effort and commitment to everything we’ve thrown at them. This weekend was a huge step forward.”
After junior Natalie Pierce set a new school record in the 100 breast on Saturday night, her classmate Christina Loh etched her name on the FSU record books by taking down the oldest swimming mark. Loh first swam a time of 2:12.16 in prelims to erase Emma Dutton’s 2:12.76 that was set in 2004.
However at final, Loh had her work cut out for her as she stood behind the blocks at finals and watched Pierce lower the mark to 2:11.20 after winning the B final.
Swimming in the top heat, she came back even faster touching with a time of 2:10.55, claiming back the record.
“Breaking the 200 breast school record three times today was fun between those two,” Studd added.
Sophomore Meg Brown swam in a pair of two consolation finals on Sunday, winning the 200 back for ninth place with a time of 1:56.31, which was a new personal best. She followed that performance with 10th place showing in the 200 fly, clocking 1:59.03.
In addition to Brown, junior Ariel Barber (2:00.04) and sophomore Fabiana Ingram (2:06.79) swam in the B heat, touching in 15th and 16th respectively.
On the boards, freshman Ayla Bonniwell led the Seminoles once again, scoring 221.70, placing fifth. Junior Blaire Mulka finished in ninth place with a total of 208.50.
Sunday’s finals started with the 1650 free and junior Alex Wittman placed 10th with a time of 16:49.15. Senior Katy Stringfield followed in 13th at 16:58.60 while rookie Manuella Ribas Andrade was 14th (16:59.16). Sophomore Daniella Van den Berg was just behind in 15th with a time of 17:03.26.
The Seminoles closed out the night by posting a time of 3:20.88 in the 400 free relay as senior Lydia Ware led off with a mark of 49.60 after she set a new personal best by winning the C final of the individual at 49.38.
The men’s team was fueled by a big performance from junior Connor Kalisz, who finished third in the 200 back with a new best time of 1:41.73, which was just off the school record of 1:41.11 set by Andy Hodgson back in 2009.
With that time, Kalisz will expect to earn his first-career bid to the NCAA Championships in March.
“Connor’s swim was huge,” Studd said. “It was a big highlight and that should be able to make it to the NCAA meet.”
In addition, senior Jason Coombs also stood out, placing second in the 200 breast with a time of 1:55.27.
Freshman Max Polianski posted another top eight finish, placing seventh in the 200 fly with a time of 1:45.03.
Senior Dylan Grisell took to his specialty, winning platform with a score of 371.35. Junior Tyler Roberge finished third at 337.65 while freshman Aidan Faminoff contributed seventh place points with a score of 273.35.
The Seminoles finished the meet with the 400 free relay, senior Jason McCormick, junior Joseph Plechy along with sophomore Kanoa Kaleoaloha and Emir Muratovic placing fourth at 2:53.46.
Prior to the relay, McCormick was sixth in the 100 free (43.40), while Muratovic finished eighth (43.88) after he swam his career best in prelims of 43.72. Kaleoaloha placed 10th also breaking the 44-second barrier at 43.79 and Plechy clocked a 44.03 after turning in his best performance in prelims at 43.91.
Both teams finished the meet in fifth place, as the women scored a tally of 403 points, while the men amassed 539.5.

Carlson, Medley Spark Night One.
February 13, 2017
ATLANTA, GA – The Florida State women’s swimming and diving team turned in a pair of fourth place finishes on the opening night of the 2017 ACC Championships at the McAuley Aquatics Center.
FSU first placed fourth in the 200 medley relay before freshman Molly Carlson made her ACC debut with a fourth place showing on 3-meter.
“We had a great start today, FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “We lowered the school record in the 200 medley relay and our 800 free relay improved about four seconds from the Georgia Invite, so we had a good day.”
The team of sophomore Ariel Barber, juniors Natalie Pierce and Tayla Lovemore along with senior Lydia Ware touched in school-record timing of 1:36.41.
The squad originally finished fifth in the race, but a disqualification caused the Seminoles to moved up to fourth. The team went faster than their seed of 1:36.58, a mark they set at the Georgia Invite back in December, qualifying for the NCAA Championships in March.
Carlson qualified in fourth for finals behind a score of 317.20. Diving sixth in the field of eight, she improved her score to 335.10 at night, holding her place in fourth.
“Molly dove exceptionally well today,” FSU diving head coach John Proctor said. “She’s used to the big stage and she stepped up and performed really well. In finals, she nailed five of her six dives and I’m really proud of her for that.”
Carlson scored above 50 points on five of her six dives, including a total of 68.60 on her reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck, which was the highest of the round.
Florida State added an 11th place finish in the 800 free relay with the team of sophomore Michelle Turek, sophomore Alex Wittman, freshman Paige Schendaalar-Kemp and senior Katy Stringfield with a time of 7:16.50.
Turek led the race off with a personal best of 1:46.78, which ranks as the third fastest swim in FSU history.
In the men’s meet, three Seminoles scored points as senior Dylan Grisell led with a 10th place showing on 1-meter, scoring 291.25. Freshman Aidan Faminoff made his ACC debut, placing 13th with a total of 284.95 while junior Tyler Roberge finished 21st (265.20).
February 14, 2017
ATLANTA, GA – The Florida State women’s swimming and diving team earned its first medals of the 2017 ACC Championships at the McAuley Aquatics Center on Tuesday.
Freshman Ayla Bonniwell took home the 1-meter title with a career best score of 320.85 while her classmate Molly Carlson won bronze in her second final of the meet, scoring 307.65.
In addition to Bonniwell and Carlson, junior Blaire Mulka competed in her first career ACC final, placing sixth at 281.00.
“Some days you’re a windshield and somedays you’re a bug,” FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. “Today, we were the windshield. We weren’t as good as we could have been yesterday on 3-meter and today, we brought it.”
Bonniwell brought home the sixth 1-meter ACC title in FSU history, joining Chelsie Lerew (2001, 2003), Courtney McClow (2003), Tiffany Manning (2004) and Katrina Young (2015).
After scoring only 36.4 points on her second dive, Bonniwell was at the bottom of the leader board, looking to climb out of a hole. On her next two dives, she chipped away at the leaders, which included Carlson, scoring totals of 54.05 and 57.60.
Bonniwell joined Carlson along with Miami’s Wallace Leyland and Marcela Maric in the fight by scoring 64.40 on her front 1.5 somersault with 2 twists in round five. She sat in third heading into the final round, just four points out of the lead with her teammate, Carlson in fourth after her fifth dive accounted for 42.90 points.
After Maric made a mistake on her final dive, the door opened for the Seminoles. Carlson went first, scoring a total of 54.60 on her forward 1.5 somersault with two twists, moving into medal contention with just four divers left.
Bonniwell went in the water clean on her back 1.5 somersault with 1 ½ twists, scoring 60 points, putting the pressure on Leyland.
Leyland could only net a total of 45.50 on her final dive for a total of 308.50, crowing Bonniwell as the champion and Carlson as the bronze medalist.
Bonniwell, Mulka and Carlson add to the rich FSU diving history to have three finalist in one event. The Seminoles last performed the feat on 3-meter at the 2014 meet with Young, Ariel Rittenhouse and Kelsey Goodman after Rittenhouse, Goodman and Lisi Roland were all finalists on 1-meter at the 2012 ACC Championships.
“That’s a pretty cool bit of history right there,” Proctor said, “Two of those divers represented the United States at the Olympics. That’s an incredible piece of history to be a part of and I’m proud of all our ladies for their performance tonight.”
Bonniwell (290.15) and Mulka (288.40) were second and third out of prelims, while Carlson was fifth (278.60) and sophomore Cassidy Gebhart scored 13th place point behind a total of 254.55.
In addition to the three divers in the championship final, seniors Lydia Ware and Caroline Neil and junior Tayla Lovemore competed in the final heats of individual events.
Ware and Neil qualified for the bonus final in prelims of the 200 IM as Neil posted a career best at 2:00.06 for 18th and Ware followed in 24th at 2:00.59.
At night, Ware worked from lane eight and was just near her personal best time (1:59.08), taking over the lead on the free leg, touching with a time of 1:59.15 for the bonus final victory. Neil finished in 22nd with at 2:00.51.
Lovemore placed third in the consolation heat of the 50 free with a time of 22.30, after touching with a mark of 22.22 in prelims.
The Seminoles closed out the evening finishing in sixth place in the 200 free relay behind freshman Nika Blank, Lovemore, Ware and junior Alexi Smith with a total time of 1:29.28, which was just off their NCAA qualifying time of 1:28.97.
“We’re pretty excited to move up the ranks today,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “Of course we had some incredible diving tonight. They were the stars today. We closed out the day with another good relay and we had more best times. It was a solid day and we’re hoping to build on this for tomorrow.”
Florida State sits in sixth place overall with a total of 297 points, just 18
behind Duke and 31 ahead of Virginia Tech.

“Overall we had a good day in the pool,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “We continued to have best times and we had more evening swims than yesterday.”
Working from lane two, Lovemore pushed for the early lead but touched in fourth place with a time of 52.28, which was slightly faster than her morning swim (52.38).
Pierce also was aggressive up front before touching in fifth place with a time of 59.87.
“Natalie and Tayla had good swims tonight,” Studd said. “Tayla looked really good and both ladies are going to look to swim faster at NCAA’s.”
In diving, Roberge made his move into second place after his fourth dive, which was a forward 3 ½ somersault pike that scored 74.40. It was his best dive in his final round.
The Edmonton, Alb. native followed with another gem, scoring 73.50 on his forward 2 ½ twister, hanging on to second by one point over Miami’s Briadam Herrera. On his final dive, a forward 2 ½ somersault with two twists, Roberge went past vertical on his entry, only scoring 44.20 for a total of 391.60 for fifth place.
Grisell was solid on five of his six dives in his sixth career ACC final, holding sixth place through more of the round. He scored above 60 points on three, including a 68.20 on his front 3 ½ pike.
“It was great to see those guys diving tonight,” FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. “Dylan was on five of his dives and Tyler put together one of the best rounds of his career. Overall it was a solid day.”

ATLANTA, GA – Florida State freshman Molly Carlson was awarded the 2017 ACC Diver of the Meet as the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships came to a close on Thursday night at the McAuley Aquatics Center.
Carlson added a gold medal-winning performance on platform in thrilling fashion, scoring 284.05 in Thursday night’s final, after she won bronze on 1-meter (307.65) on Tuesday and placed fourth on 3-meter (335.10) Monday.
“Molly was on fire this week,” FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. “She was so consistent throughout all three events and she just knows how to step up in big moments. I am so proud of her.”
The Toronto, Ont. native becomes the first Seminole in history to capture MVP honors since platform was added to the meet in 2008. Prior to the addition, Erin Gillooly (1995), Chelsie Lerew (2001-03) and Courtney McClow (2004) took home the award based on their performance in springboard events.
In addition to Carlson winning gold, senior Dylan Grisell earned silver in his fourth and final ACC Championship platform final, scoring a total of 391.95.
“Somedays you’re a windshield and somedays you’re a bug,” Proctor said. “Today we had three divers that were the windshield including Dylan. The guy has been in seven career ACC finals and it’s just awesome for him to get on the podium in his final ACC’s.”
Carlson started the night in sixth place after scoring totals of 55, 44.55 and 50.75 on her first three dives, finding herself in sixth place.
In round four, Carlson made her move after several divers missed as she posted 62.35 on her back 2 ½ somersault, jumping up into the lead.
North Carolina’s Elissa Dawson would take over at the top after she put down a 73.50 point scoring dive, putting the pressure on Carlson.
Carlson saved her best dive for last, a reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck, scoring 71.40 retaking the lead.
After Carlson, Frieda Lim of Clemson also put her best dive last, tallying 70.40, but her overall score of 276.25 was not enough to pass Carlson.
“My last dive is my favorite one,” Carlson said. “So I put it at the end because no matter how the competition is going I know it’s a dive I can finish strong and I did that tonight.”
In his final event of his ACC career, Grisell had to come back from an eighth place start following his first dive, which was good for 51 points.
The Toronto, Ont. native made a big move on his second and third dives, moving into medal contention with a 73.95 total on his reverse 2 ½ somersault and following that with a 71.40 inward 2 ½ pike.
Grisell held his place through his 64.40 point armstand, however he faltered slightly on his back 3 ½ somersault tuck, scoring a tally of 54.45.
Holding in third, Grisell also saved his best dive for last posting his highest total of 76.80 on his back 2 ½ somersault 1 ½ twisting pike. Grisell’s final dive was high enough to hold off two contenders for the silver medal.
Joining Grisell in his first ACC Championship final was freshman Aidan Faminoff, who qualified for the round in eighth place with a prelim score of 325.20.
Faminoff showed improvement in finals, hitting five of his six dives, including a 72 point forward 3 ½ somersault pike in the fifth round. The Victoria, B.C. native closed out his finals with an inward 3 ½ somersault pike for 57.50, placing him sixth.
“It was a good last night for us,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “We killed our point total from last season and everyone that was on the ACC team contributed points, either individually or on a relay. I think that was really cool.”
In the pool, junior Christina Loh made her A final debut, after qualifying for the top heat with a time of 2:11.55 in seventh place. She moved up to fifth at night, clocking 2:13.00.
Sophomore Meg Brown led off the swimming portion of the night with a 24th place finish in the 200 back with a time of 1:59.85 after posting a 1:58.52 in the morning swim.
Senior Lydia Ware followed Brown in the C final of the 100 free, placing 19th tying her personal best at 49.38 in both finals and prelims.
In addition to Loh, sophomore Natalie Purnell moved up in the B final, placing 14th with a personal best mark of 2:13.00 while senior Caroline Neil closed out her career with a 18th place finish, touching with a time of 2:13.86, which was her best time. Both Purnell and Neil earn a spot on FSU’s all-time top 10 list in fifth and seventh respectively.
Swimming in the final individual event of the meet, junior Tayla Lovemore made a surge in the back half of the 200 fly, touching in second in the C final with a career best time of 1:58.53, which ranks fifth in school history.
The Seminoles closed out the night with a seventh place finish in the 400 free relay behind Ware, sophomore Michelle Turek, freshman Nika Blank and Lovemore, with a time of 3:17.35. Ware led off with a personal best of 49.37, while Blank (49.05) and Lovemore (48.81) anchored with their best splits.
Earlier in the day, Florida State picked up 21st place points from sophomore Alex Wittman (16:57.05) in the 1650 free in addition to Manuella Ribas Andrade who was 23rd at a person best of 16:58.19.
Florida State finished the meet in eighth place with a total of 625.5 and freshman Ayla Bonniwell, Carlson and Grisell all took home All-ACC honors.
“We took some big steps forward this year,” Studd said. “I’m very happy about that.”

Carlson Punches Ticket to NCAA Championships.
Freshman Molly Carlson earned a bid to the NCAA Championships on Monday after placing fifth on
3-meters
March 06, 2017
AUBURN, AL – Florida State freshman diver Molly Carlson punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships by ways of a fifth place finish in a very tight 3-meter battle at the Zone B Qualifier on Monday at Auburn.
Carlson picked up right where she left off as the ACC Diving Meet MVP, showing her consistency by scoring over 50 points on nine of her 12 dives.
“Molly is such a gamer,” FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. “She’s used to those big meets and she stepped up and did what she needed to do today. I am very proud of her.”
In prelims, Carlson posted a score of 296.05 for eighth place. The Thunder Bay, Ont. native made adjustments on her misses, improving her second round score to 311.45 for a total of 607.50.
Her score placed her in the middle of the pack of NCAA qualifiers, as just 41.90 total points separated the nine divers.
“She thrives on the competition,” Proctor said. “This is a very competitive field and she loves that stage.”
Carlson will join juniors Natalie Pierce, Christina Loh and Tayla Lovemore along with three FSU relays at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. that will run from March 15-18.
In addition to Carlson, junior Blaire Mulka also dove in the finals of 3-meter, posting a tally of 559.90 for 13th place, just ahead of sophomore Cassidy Gebhart who was 15th at 550.10.
The men competed on 1-meter on Monday as junior Tyler Roberge and senior Dylan Grisell finished ninth and 10th respectively, just outside of the NCAA qualifying mark. However, if Roberge or Grisell should advance in 1-meter or platform, they will be allowed to dive 1-meter at NCAA’s due to finishing in the top 12 of the Zone meet.
“It’s not total heartbreak city for those guys,” Proctor said. “They both are better at events that are still to come, but it’s competitive and we’ll have to be better and put our foot on the gas and go.”
Roberge opened with a prelim round score of 326.05, sitting in seventh place. However, Roberge would have to work out of a hole after missing his first two dives in finals. Refusing to quit, Roberge rallied, scoring 54.60 on his forward 2 ½ somersault pike in the third round.
The Edmonton, Alb. native added 55.90 on his forward 2 ½ somersault 2 free twists before closing out the round with a pair of 60.0’s for a total of 640.15, just over six one-hundredths of a point away from the eighth place, NCAA qualifying diver.
Grisell tallied 311.20 in his opening prelim round for ninth place.
In finals, Grisell scored above 50 points on five of his six dives, improving his second round score by 10 points to 321.00 for a total of 632.20 – just over eight points shy from an NCAA bid.
Freshman Aidan Faminoff also advance to his first
career Zone B final, finishing 17th with a score of 576.75 after scoring 301.00 in prelims.
March 07, 2017
AUBURN, AL – Three more Florida State divers earned bids to the NCAA Championships on Tuesday at the Zone B Qualifier, which is hosted by Auburn.
Junior Tyler Roberge and senior Dylan Grisell will return to the NCAA meet after finishing eighth and ninth respectively in men’s 3-meter and freshman Ayla Bonniwell punched her ticket following a sixth place showing on 1-meter.
“Some days you’re a windshield and some days you’re a bug,” FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. “Today we had three kids qualify for NCAA’s, so we were definitely the windshield.”
Bonniwell started the day off by scoring 270.95 in prelims, advancing to finals in 10th place.
Needing to hold her spot in order to qualify for NCAA’s, Bonniwell improved her score in finals by over 20 points, to 291.1, performing three dives over 50 points including her highest total of 51.25 on her finishing back 1½ somersault 1 ½ twist for a total of 562.05.

Throughout his 12 dives, Roberge scored seven above 60 points, including his final two when he need it most, posting 63 points on his forward 2 ½ somersault 1 twist pike before finishing on a forward 2 ½ somersault 2 twist pike that scored 69.70. His total of 718.10 placed him eighth, advancing him to his second-career NCAA Championships.
Grisell opened with a round of 352.20 in prelims for ninth place, just behind Roberge.

With little room for error, Grisell closed out his round with tallies of 58.50 on his reverse 2 ½ somersault pike and 67.50 on his forward 2 ½ somersault 1 twist pike, which was his highest scoring dive of the day.
Both Roberge and Grisell also finished within the top 12 of Monday’s 1-meter competition, therefore will be able to compete in both springboard events at the NCAA Championships that run from March 22-25 in Indianapolis, Ind.
In addition to Bonniwell, rookie Molly Carlson finished 12th on 1-meter with a score of 541.60 after qualifying for the NCAA Championships on 3-meter on Monday. By placing in the top 12, Carlson can add 1-meter to her list.

“This is a tough Zone but our team is really strong,” Proctor said. “Zones its always kind of like getting a Wax – it’s stressful and painful, but when it’s all said and done you’ve worked through the hard part and you show up to NCAA’s feeling silky smooth.”

Bonniwell Earns All-America Honors.
March 16, 2017
INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Florida State freshman diver Ayla Bonniwell closed out her rookie season with an All-America effort on Thursday at the 2017 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the IUPUI Natatorium.
The Ithaca, N.Y., native picked up honorable mention accolades behind a 16th finish in 1-meter diving with a final score of 274.85. Bonniwell became the sixth Florida State diver to earn an All-America nod on 1-meter in school history.
“I am very proud of her,” FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. “She had one helluva freshman year and this was a great way for her to end her season.”
In prelims, Bonniwell was among 52 competitors in the field, climbing her way up from 31st to advance to the consolation heat in 13th place with a score of 279.30.
The consolation heat had five of the eight divers in the field qualify just over a point away from each other, however the scores from prelims erased.
Her final round was just off her prelim total as she opened with a tally of 49.20 on her inward 1 ½ and closed with a mark of 48.75 on her back 1 ½ somersault 1 ½ twists free for a final total of 274.85. She was eighth in the heat and 16th overall.
Bonniwell was also the lone point-scorer from the ACC as well as Zone B.
Freshman Molly Carson also competed on 1-meter, placing 31st with a total of 253.40.
In the pool, the Seminoles started off the day by finishing 23rd in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:29.73 behind the team of senior Lydia Ware, junior Tayla Lovemore, freshman Nika Blank and junior Alexi Smith.
Lovemore competed in her first individual race of the meet, placing 39th in the 50 free at 22.52.
Florida State competed in the 400 medley relay, however was disqualified due to a faulty relay exchange.
“Our relay looked great and was fast,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “We were just early. That happens, but we looked
great and we have a lot more left in the tank for Friday.”
March 17, 2017
INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Junior Natalie Pierce made Florida State history on Friday night with a fourth place finish in the 100 breast with a time of 58.26 at the 2017 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
In addition to Pierce, junior Tayla Lovemore also set the school record in the 100 fly with an All-America honorable mention performance of 12th with a time of 51.60.
“I am so proud of both Tayla and Natalie tonight,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “To be the fastest Seminoles ever in their events is something special. They did it when it counted and when they were under the most pressure. Both are very special athletes.”
Pierce’s fourth place finish is the highest at the NCAA’s in the 100 breast in school history. The Bloomfield Hills, Mich. native, became the fourth Seminole to capture All-America honors in the race and the first to accomplish the feat since Lauren Brick captured back-to-back in 2006 and 2007.
She also lowered her school record that she set back at the Georgia Invite (58.37) after she earned the No. 3 seed for finals behind a showing of 58.38 in prelims.
Lovemore erased the mark of 51.79 that was set at the 2015 NCAA meet by former Seminole Chelsea Britt. The Pretoria, South Africa native was the final swimmer to qualify for the consolation heat in 16th place out of prelims with a mark of 52.12, just two one-hundredths ahead of two swimmers tied for 17th place. In finals, she moved up four spots for 12th place.
Both Pierce and Lovemore also helped the Seminoles lower their school record in prelims of the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:36.36, advancing into the consolation heat in 10th place along with junior Ariel Barber (back) and senior Lydia Ware (free).
However, in finals, Florida State was called for an early relay exchange and was disqualified.
In addition to Pierce and Lovemore, junior Christina Loh made her NCAA debut in the 100 breast, touching with a time of 1:01.51 for 45th place.
Freshman Molly Carlson competed in 3-meter diving, as she scored a tally of 285.10 for 28th place.
After Friday’s session, Florida State sits in 24th place with 21 points.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The 2016-17 Swimming and Diving season came to a close on Saturday at the 2017 NCAA Championships, but not before freshman Molly Carlson could earn All-America honorable mention accolades behind a 14th place finish on platform.
“She had a solid day,” FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. “I think she and Ayla (Bonniwell) did a great job with training and competing this season as well as handling the stress that goes along with competing at NCAA’s.”
Carlson qualified 11th out of prelims, after finishing strong on her final two dives. In round four, her back 2 1 ½ tuck scored 62.35 points before ending with a reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck that scored 58.80.
In finals with the scores reset, Carlson fell back to eighth after her first two dives but responded by closing out her season with three that scored above 50 points for a total of 241.25.
“Molly is a gamer,” Proctor said. “She thrives in competition and it’s always impressive to see a freshman making to NCAA’s. She has flourished in her first season as a Seminole.”
In prelims of swimming, both junior Natalie Pierce and Tayla Lovemore finished on high notes, turning in career best times.
After her historical 100 breast on Friday night where she placed fourth in school record timing (58.26), Pierce placed 23rd in the 200 breast with a time of 2:10.80. It was the second fastest swim in Florida State history behind junior Christina Loh, who followed Pierce in the race with a time of 2:11.45 for 30th.
Lovemore competed in the 200 fly at 1:58.51, placing 39th.
Florida State finished the meet in 28th place with a total of 24 points as Bonniwell, Pierce, Lovemore and Carlson all picked up All-America honors by scoring towards the team total.
The Seminoles were the fifth highest team representing the ACC behind Louisville (Sixth), NC State (Seventh), Virginia (12th) and North Carolina (17th). In addition, FSU finished ahead of all the Florida schools including the Gators.
“We’re very excited to have such a great NCAA finish,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “I’m incredibly proud of these ladies in addition to our hard-working staff. We could have been higher if we didn’t lose those two relays to DQ’s, but it was still a fantastic meet.”
