Florida State went 2-1 in the first day of its season-opening home tournament; the Seminoles face
South Carolina and Tampa tomorrow afternoon to close the tournament.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 3/4 Florida State beach volleyball team went 2-1 in the first day of the 2019 season, earning a pair of ranked wins against the No. 18 Green Wave and No. 6 Mustangs, but falling to the No. 7 Tigers at the Home2 Suites by Hilton-Tallahassee State Capitol Invitational.
Florida State saw a number of new players in the lineup in the first weekend of the season, as graduate transfer Payton Rund played at the No. 1 position with Brooke Kuhlman throughout the day, freshman Kate Privett teamed up with Molly McBain and sophomore Avery Poppinga stayed consistent with Macy Jerger at No. 5. FSU indoor star Payton Caffrey also made her beach debut on Saturday, playing with Sara Putt at the No. 4 position. Freshmen Jenna Johnson and Lexi McKeown both made their collegiate debuts in exhibition matches.
The Seminoles started off with a conference win against No. 18 Tulane, and picked up another huge ranked win against No. 6 Cal Poly in the afternoon. FSU is now 2-1 against teams from California in Tallahassee, as the Seminoles went 1-1 against Pepperdine in 2017.

FSU saw the highest ranked opponent it will see this weekend in its second match of the day, as the

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. – The No. 4 Florida State beach volleyball team (10-2, 6-1 CCSA) impressed on the first day of UCLA’s East Meets West Invitational, beating No. 3 Pepperdine in a huge 4-1 decision and edging out No. 5 Hawaii in a close 3-2 match that came down to one tiebreak set. The two wins on Saturday brings FSU to seven top-10 wins so far this season.
FSU’s win over the Waves marks only the team’s second win over Pepperdine in program history (both have come under head coach Brooke Niles), and FSU’s first 4-1 win against them. This win snapped a three-match win streak against the Seminoles for the Waves.
By winning the last two team points to win the match against the Rainbow Wahine, Florida State marked its third consecutive win over Hawaii, and eighth in program history. The last time the Seminoles beat Hawaii was in the NCAA Championship semifinals – sophomore Madison Fitzpatrick and her partner clinched both that match and today’s win over the Rainbow Wahine.

The Seminoles’ first point came from McBain/Privett in the No. 3 position, a quick straight-set decision that gave FSU an
early lead. Jerger/Johnson followed close behind with an even more dominating win, setting up Kuhlman/Rund at the No. 1 position to clinch the match. Putt/Caffrey followed it with a resilient
three-set win to bring FSU its fourth team point, but the Waves followed through at the No. 2 position to earn their lone point of the match.

Hawaii earned the first team point with a win at No. 3, but FSU retaliated with
a quick win at No. 4 by Putt/Caffrey to tie it up 1-1. As the Rainbow Wahine regained the lead with a point at the No. 1 position, Jerger/Johnson earned their second win of the day to tie it up. With
all eyes on the third set on Chacon/Fitzpatrick’s court for the second time this week – FSU’s midweek match against USC was decided in the third set on their court – the sophomores came up clutch and

Beach Dominates Opening Day of East Meets West Invitational.
The Seminoles earned a pair of top-five wins against Pepperdine and Hawaii.
The last time the Seminoles beat Hawaii was in the NCAA Championship semifinals – sophomore Madison Fitzpatrick and her partner clinched both that match and today’s win over the Rainbow Wahine.

three-set win to bring FSU its fourth team point, but the Waves followed through at the No. 2 position to earn their lone point of the match.
FSU is only the second team to beat Pepperdine so far this season, as the Waves had previously lost to UCLA twice.

With
all eyes on the third set on Chacon/Fitzpatrick’s court for the second time this week – FSU’s midweek match against USC was decided in the third set on their court – the sophomores came up clutch and
closed it out for the win.

Beach Volleyball Defeats Stetson 4-1 to Cap Off a perfect Seminole Beach Battle.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 3 Florida State beach volleyball team (14-4, 6-1 CCSA) capped off a perfect weekend with a 4-1 win over No. 10 Stetson (11-4).
“This weekend was great because we were home,” said head coach Brooke Niles. “Teams played us really tough and we battled. Stetson is a top-10 team and they have had a lot of big upsets every weekend, so that match was a big challenge for us. We have some new pairings and that was a challenge for us because we have not had a lot of time to practice them against competition. Our team fought really hard and I am really proud of them today.”
The Noles jumped out of the gates hot, gathering straight-set wins from pairs four and five in the first wave of competition. Juniors Molly McBain and Payton Caffrey finished off their weekend with their second win together in the four’s slot. The Seminole duo won the first set 21-9 before taking the second set and the match 21-15.
Senior Macy Jerger and freshman Kate Privett gave the Noles a 2-0 lead with their third win together of the season and third of the weekend. They jumped out to an early 14-7 lead before turning that into a 21-13 first set win. In the second set, they fell behind 15-14 but battled back winning seven of the last 12 games to take the second set 21-19.
“We realized that we have all the pieces we just need to find the right pairs,” said Niles. “We definitely can compete with anybody.”
Florida State jumped out to take two of three first sets in the second wave of matches. For the third time this weekend, sophomores Madison Fitzpatrick and Alaina Chacon clinched the match for the Seminoles at the one’s position. They took the first set 21-17 and the second 21-15 on their way to giving FSU a 3-0 lead.
Grad transfer Payton Rund and redshirt junior Sara Putt gave the Garnet and Gold a 4-0 lead with a straight-set win on court four. They fell behind early in the first set before coming back to take it 21-18. In the second set, they jumped out to an early lead and kept it on their way to taking the set 21-15.
Stetson finished off the match with their only point of the match on court two.
“We are so competitive at every spot,” said Niles. “The message to this team is that we compete so hard at practice for spots, that sometimes when we play we relax a little bit. Those spots we compete for in practice we have to transition into the games and compete out there as well. We are doing a great job and I am really proud of this team, especially with so many new people in the lineup.”

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Florida State beach volleyball team (29-6) wrapped up day one of the NCAA Championship with 3-0 loss to second-seeded UCLA.
“We don’t have to clean up much after today, it was really close,” said head coach Brooke Niles. “At some points in the game, we were not as aggressive as they were from the service line. It is a double elimination tournament and we are going to be ready to battle tomorrow and try to chug through this tournament. We played really tough and they played really tough, it was a battle on all five courts. That was the closest it has been all year. We have to wash that match away and move on to tomorrow. We have to be resilient and bounce back.”
The Noles took three first sets before all five matches got sent to third sets. Juniors Payton Caffrey and Molly McBain were the first match to finish on court four. The Seminole duo took the first set 21-13 before losing the second set 21-19. The Noles fell behind 12-11 in the final set and could not come back losing 15-12.
The Bruins extended their lead to 2-0 with another three-set win on court one. Sophomores Madison Fitzpatrick and Alaina Chacon were in a dogfight in the first set before coming away with a 21-19 win. In the second set, UCLA bounced back to take the set 21-19. Florida State then fell behind 7-0 in the final set before losing it to the McNamara twins 15-7.
UCLA then clinched the match with their third three-set win on court five. Senior Macy Jerger and freshman Kate Privett lost the first set 21-13. They came back to take the second set 21-18. Privett and Jerger jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the third set but the Bruins came back to take the set and the match 15-13.

Noles Fall to USC to End Run at Nationals.
GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Florida State beach volleyball team’s season came to an end on Saturday with a 3-1 loss to USC (30-5). This senior class ends their Florida State career as the winningest senior class in program history.
“They really fought hard today,” said head coach Brooke Niles. “I know they did not want it to end like this. Today was not our day. We had a tough draw and those are things we have to deal with in a championship tournament. I would have liked to have started a little stronger and come out here with nothing to lose and something to prove. We got in too big of a hole on some of the courts.”
“The seniors have done a great job. I came in their freshman year and did not recruit any of them. They really bought into what I was doing and the culture of the program. I love those girls. It is going to be tough to see them go since they have been a staple of the program since I have been here. Change is good though and we have to move on and start building for next year.”
The Seminoles (29-7) got off to a slow start losing four of five first sets. Senior Macy Jerger and freshman Kate Privett continued to impress as they had all tournament long. They took the first set 21-16, leading the whole way. The two jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the second set and did not turn back as they won 21-12 for the Seminoles' only point of the match.
USC jumped out to a 2-0 lead with wins on courts one and two. Jerger and Privet narrowed the USC lead to 2-1 as juniors Molly McBain and Payton Caffrey forced a third set on court two. Caffrey had an incredible set as she and McBain climbed back from an early 4-1 deficit to take the second set 21-18.
Their effort was not enough as USC clinched the match with a 24-22, 21-17 win on court three.
“We are really young,” said Niles. We have three seniors starting and one of them has only been here a few months. Moving forward we have a lot of potential and a lot of stuff to work on. I am proud of this team overall. It is a difficult moment losing especially when you know what it feels like to be in the national championship game.”

HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. - Florida State beach volleyball capped off play at the USAV Collegiate Pairs Championship with a second place finish by volunteer assistant coach Jonathan Justice and his partner Bryce Estes and a fourth place finish my Madison Fitzpatrick and Alaina Chacon.
Justice and Estes’s second-place finish gets them invited to train with the college beach training team.
Jonathan Justice made his second straight appearance in the finals of the USAV Collegiate Pairs Championship. Last year Justice along with FAU’s Adam Wienkowsi won the pairs championship and represented Team USA in the World University games. This year Justice teamed up with Bryce Estes of Nicholls State. The two went 2-0 in pool play to capture the two seed in the single elimination bracket.
After a first-round bye, Justice and Estes earned two three-set wins to make an appearance in the championship match. In their first two matches, the duo lost their first set and came back to take the final two sets and the match.
Justice met up with former teammate Wienckowsi and UCLA’s Tim Brewster in the final. Just like the previous two matches, the pair lost the first set, 21-17. They bounce back to force a third set like the last two times with a 21-13, dominant performance in the second set.
The championship came down two a thrilling third set that needed more than just 15 points to decide it. Justice and Estes took an early 7-3 lead but their opponents came back and tied it at 12. Justice and Estes then served an ace to get their first of four match points but that was not enough. The two teams continued to swap points until Wienkowsi and Brewster came away victorious 23-21.
Madison Fitzpatrick and Alaina Chacon went 0-2 on the day losing to LSU’s Claire Coppola and Kristin Nuss in straight sets and Loyola Marymount’s Emman Doud and Savannah Slattery in three sets.
