No. 4 Beach Volleyball Stays Ahead on Day One of Spring Fling.
Florida State picked up a pair of wins over conference opponents Florida Atlantic
and South Carolina on Friday. The Seminoles will play Georgia State and Stetson in the second day of the Stetson Spring Fling.
DELAND, FL - The Florida State beach volleyball team topped two conference opponents in the first day of the Stetson Spring Fling, sweeping No. 16 FAU and No. 8 South Carolina on Friday (Feb. 23).
"I think we had a great day today," said head coach Brooke Niles. "I was really proud of the team the way they competed."
The Seminoles won their first two matches for the third season in a row, in the same number of years under Niles. Competing against two conference opponents in its opening weekend allows FSU to check out the CCSA field early in its quest for a third consecutive conference title.
"We're just focused on our side of the net because it's still early on and we don't know much about the teams, so we're just trying to execute," Niles said. "The good thing is we still have a lot we can work on as the season progresses."
Florida State saw a veteran lineup in both matches, while certain players took on different roles. Junior Macy Jerger played at the No. 1 position for the first time in her career, and freshmen Alaina Chacon and Madison Fitzpatrick took to the sand in an exhibition match against FAU.
"Macy [Jerger] and Tory [Paranagua] were really clean and in system almost every time, and they were really putting a lot of pressure on teams with their serves," Niles said.
No. 4 Florida State def. No. 16 Florida Atlantic, 5-0
The Seminoles started off strong in the first match of the
day against the Owls, with Luke/Horton and McBain/Torruella picking off their opponents in two sets at the No. 4 and 5 positions, respectively. Freshmen Alaina Chacon and Madison Fitzpatrick also
picked up their first win as Seminoles, defeating Barker/Lewkowicz in an exhibition match.
Macy Jerger and Tory Paranagua finished off a quick 21-12 first set, followed by a pair of 21-16 first-set wins from Kuhlman/Freire at No. 2 and Goncalves/Putt at No. 3. The Seminoles at the No. 1 position dropped the second set, but it was Goncalves and Putt that wrapped up a quick 21-19 set to defeat FAU's Navarro/Grant to clinch the match for FSU.
The Seminoles carried out the sweep with a two-set win from Kuhlman/Freire at No. 2 and a three-set win from Paranagua/Jerger at No. 1, taking down Florida Atlantic 5-0.
No. 4 Florida State def. No. 8 South Carolina, 4-1
Florida State saw closer competition in its second match of the day, taking down No. 8 South Carolina 4-1
on Friday afternoon.
Although the first set stayed close, the pairing of Luke/Horton was able to take the first team point for the Seminoles with a quick 21-11 win in the second set at the No. 4 position.
McBain and Torruella followed up with the next team point with a three-set win. After some long first sets in the first three positions, it was the No. 1 duo of Jerger/Paranagua that was able to clinch the win for the Seminoles with a 21-14, 21-14 win over Williams/Denney.
FSU followed up with another quick win at the No. 3 position from Goncalves and Putt, but the Gamecocks were able to hold off another sweep for the Seminoles with a three-set win at the No. 2 position.

The Florida State beach volleyball team swept the St. Petersburg Titans twice on
Friday in their first home event of the season.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Day one of the FSU Invitational saw two sweeps for No. 4 Florida State, one upset win and two five-court decisions. The Seminoles took down St. Petersburg College twice on Friday (March 2), defeating the Titans 5-0 and later 4-0.
The back-to-back matches against the Titans marks the first time in program history the team has seen an opponent twice in one day. With the opportunity to play the same team, the Seminoles saw a number of new players entering the lineups, with Bailey Reardon, Alaina Chacon and Lauren Anderson all winning their first matches at FSU.
"It can be hard playing the same team twice," said head coach Brooke Niles. "I thought our team did a great job of coming in prepared and executing our game plans on our side of the net. Right now we're really just trying to be better at a lot of things in our overall game."
FSU's Saturday opponents, Stetson and College of Charleston also had an eventful day, with the No. 15 Hatters taking down College of Charleston a match that ended 3-2 in a three-set decision, and the Cougars earning a ranked win against No. 11 FIU earlier in the day.
"College of Charleston had a big win against FIU, so the coaches are all going to go back and scout most of the night and prepare our team for a game plan," Niles said. "I think we just have to be ready to compete and not take anyone lightly."

While the two teams saw a number of highly contested sets at a number of different positions, the Waves were able to push through it and hand FSU its first loss of the season.
Match #2: No. 5 Florida State 4, No. 3 Hawaii 1
A new lineup for the Seminoles helped
them start off on top in their second match of the day, taking all but one of the first sets. While the Rainbow Wahine came up with a quick win at the No. 2 position for a 1-0 lead, the Seminoles took
the lead back with a pair of wins from McBain/Fitzpatrick and Kuhlman/Goncalves.

Seminoles Dominate West Coast Competition in NCAA Championship.
The beach volleyball team took down No. 5 USC and No. 1 UCLA to stay perfect on
the first day of the NCAA Championship, tying the program record for season wins.
GULF SHORES, AL - The fourth-seeded Florida State beach volleyball team stayed perfect on the first day of the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship, taking out No. 5 USC and No. 1 UCLA. FSU handed the defending champions their first loss in the championship to start the day, and toppled the top-seeded team in the event for the first time in program history.
"We're the underdog, we're not expected to win," said head coach Brooke Niles. "We have everything to gain and nothing to lose, and that's how we're playing."
The Seminoles started off the day against No. 4 Southern Cal, a team that had gone 8-0 in the Championship prior to facing the Seminoles. The Seminoles took down the two-time defending national champions in a 3-1 decision, coming out of the first round of the only East Coast team to earn a win.
FSU snapped a six-match run for the Women of Troy in the series between the two teams, and earned their first win over USC since 2016.
The next round of the Championship matched the Seminoles with No. 1 seed UCLA, where FSU was able to close out the match in another 3-1 decision. It marked the largest upset in a defeat of the top-seeded team, with the last time a No. 1 seed fell was when the No. 1 Seminoles fell to No. 2 USC twice in 2016.
With all six of FSU's losses in the regular season coming to West Coast teams, the Seminoles went into the tournament looking to prove themselves against four of the teams they had lost to earlier in the season.
"'All In' isn't about winning or losing, it's about sacrificing yourself for the team and doing it day in and day out, whether it's mental training, physical training, making changes on the court, listening to the coaches. They've been doing that all year and we've been getting better and better at it, I'm so proud of them."
With 32 wins this season, FSU now ties its program record for most wins in a season. The record was set in 2016 when Niles took the helm and led the Seminoles to a 32-3 record and a runner-up finish in the inaugural NCAA Championship.

Championship Bound: FSU Tops Hawaii in NCAA Semifinal.
FSU earned a 3-2 win over Hawaii in the winners bracket semifinal to head to the NCAA
Championship final on Sunday; their 33-6 season record sets the program record.
GULF SHORES, AL - With the dual tied at 2-2, spectators flocked to the fifth court to watch the match that would determine the winner of the first NCAA Championship semifinal. Freshman Madison Fitzpatrick and sophomore Francesca Goncalves were battling out a third set at No. 5, with a win sending FSU to the finals. The pair was able to close out the victory to give the fourth-seeded Seminoles a 3-2 win over No. 3 Hawaii.
Four of the five courts in the dual were decided in three sets, as the Seminoles saw the closest match of their tournament run this weekend. Florida State has stayed undefeated in the Championship this season, taking out two-time reigning champion USC, No. 1 overall UCLA, and now No. 3 Hawaii to advance to the title match.
"Madison [Fitzpatrick] really stepped up and she's been great," said head coach Brooke Niles. "When we told her, 'hey, it's going to come down to this game,' she got this big smile on her face and she was so excited. She's just a freshman and she's just excited to be here, but also, she's a grinder and that's firing through her. We've had so many people step up in different spots throughout the whole year. I think everybody really feels like they're part of this team and they've helped us get here."
This is the first time in program history the Seminoles will head into the NCAA Championship match undefeated in the tournament. Their previous best run was in 2016, when the Seminoles fell to USC in the winners bracket semifinal, and then came back to meet them again in the final.
"Every point counts and whether we're the first team to get a point on the board or the third, or the other team is picking up the slack for us," said Goncalves. "It's a team sport and everyone matters just as much as everyone else. It couldn't be a more beautiful system."
With 33 wins this season, FSU sets the program record for most wins in a season. The record was first set in 2016 when Niles took the helm and led the Seminoles to a 32-3 record and a runner-up finish in the inaugural NCAA Championship.
Florida State snapped a 32-match win streak for the Rainbow Warriors with Saturday's victory. Hawaii's last loss was to FSU earlier in the season, when the Seminoles won 4-1 in their only victory of the East Meets West Challenge.

Beach Volleyball Concludes Season as National Runner Up.
Horton and Luke were named to the All-Tournament team after the Seminoles fell to UCLA
for their only loss in the 2018 NCAA Championship.
GULF SHORES, AL - With a record-setting 33-7 season and the best NCAA Championship run the team has ever seen, the Florida State beach volleyball team fell in the finals to No. 1 overall UCLA to finish as the NCAA National Runner Up for the second time in three years.
The Seminoles went undefeated in the tournament to reach the title match, marking their best championship run to date. The team's previous best finish was in 2016, when they fell in the winners bracket semifinal and finished as the runner up to then-undefeated USC.
"We had a great experience here," said head coach Brooke Niles. "We stayed in the winners bracket longer than any other team. We lost once and so did UCLA. It has been a great tournament. Congrats to them. They played great, but I'm really proud of my team and we fought till the very end."
FSU was the team to hand UCLA its first loss of the Championship in the second round, sending the Bruins to the elimination bracket. The top-seeded team was able to survive the lower bracket to make it to the finals to see the Seminoles again. It marked UCLA's first win over the Seminoles in the NCAA Championship.
The final match was split into two rounds, with the No. 4 and 5 pairs up first. The Seminoles rolled through both of the first sets, but couldn't compete with a couple of UCLA pairs that found their groove in the second sets. After Goncalves/Fitzpatrick dropped the third set on five, Brooke Kuhlman and Molly McBain earned the first win for the Seminoles with a three-set win to tie up the match 1-1.
In the second round of play, the top of the lineup was paired up with three tough Bruins pairs. UCLA took the first set on all three courts, and then closed out the win with victories on three and one.
"This postseason tournament is something really special," Goncalves said. "It's a lot of pressure, but in the best kind of way. Really getting to use everything you've learned throughout the season and all the hard work to play these games against the top teams every single time is what's important. I just had the best experience playing with Madison and I'm just so proud of everything she's done in this post tournament. It's heartbreaking at the end, but it's all been worth it this season."
Florida State marked a historic postseason in 2018, handing USC its first loss in the Championship, becoming the first No. 4 seed to knock off the top-seeded team, and ending a 31-dual win and 32-dual win streak for UCLA and Hawaii, respectively.
Following their impressive performance at the Championship, Katie Horton and Hailey Luke were named to the All-Tournament Team.
