FSU Splits Season Opener.
DELAND, FL – The No. 3 Florida State sand volleyball team opened its 2015 season on Saturday splitting its two matches. The Seminoles defeated Stetson (W, 3-2), but dropped a tight battle against FIU (L, 3-2).
“It’s always great to get those first two matches in,” head coach Danalee Corso said. “We have a disadvantage because we have two players who play indoor volleyball, where the other teams are filled with indoor players and have the entire first semester to compete, which makes it very difficult. These indoor teams play together all year long. We need to get more experienced to match that.”
Florida State started off the day winning on three straight courts to clinch the match against Stetson and post its first victory of the season.
Redshirt sophomore Katherine Plessy was back in the sand for the first time since 2013 because of an injury that sidelined her all of last season. Plessy teamed up with freshman Vanessa Freire and got the Noles on the board first with a victory over Stetson’s Madison Atkins and Claudia Kalin, 21-17, 21-15.
The pair with the most experience playing together for Florida State was impressive in both of their matches on Saturday. Senior Melanie Pavels and junior Julie Brown have played 66 matches together and were on fire out of the gates against Stetson’s Madison Tormey and Kaylee Anderson, winning the first set, 21-7. After dropping the second set, Pavels and Brown got back to their dominating ways in the third-set tiebreaker to finish off Tormey and Anderson, 21-7, 18-21, 15-4. In their next match against Darija Salmaric and Aren Cupp of FIU, the veteran pair continued their strong play with a straight set victory, 21-14, 21-13. Pavels and Brown now have an all-time record of 49-19 when playing together.
Seniors Jace Pardon and Sarah Wickstrom proved they might be one of the best tandems in the nation adding two victories on Saturday. Pardon, a two-time All-American, and Wickstrom, a one-time All-American, were named All-Americans when pairing together in 2013. The partnership is back and they won all four of their sets in their two wins. Pardon and Wickstrom first got by Kaley Melville and Julie Bassett of Stetson, 21-18, 21-16. In their second match, they defeated FIU’s Arja Licka and Maryna Samoday, 22-20, 21-16.
“Jace and Sarah are a very confident and strong team,” Corso said. “They definitely played well, but they still have room to improve.”
The Seminoles have now won four straight home openers dating back to their inaugural season in 2012.
“Everybody is getting better,” Corso said. “We don’t take anybody lightly, ever. FIU gave us our first loss in four years against an East Coast team. Hopefully we can come out strong in California with this competition under our belts.”

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA – The No. 4 Florida State sand volleyball team began its West Coast road trip on Tuesday.
The Seminoles got victories over Irvine Valley College (W, 5-0) and No. 5 Long Beach State (W, 4-1) at the IVC Invitational to improve their record to 3-1 on the season.
“The girls were a little nervous the opening match [against Stetson and FIU],” head coach Danalee Corso said. “Everybody was hungry today and we wanted it more. We had the best warmup before our match in the history of our program and we came out strong from top to bottom. We had a great day.”
Florida State started the day off with a dominating win over Irvine Valley College. The Noles swept the Lasers by winning all five courts without dropping a set.
The Seminoles had a tougher time against the Beach, going to a third set on three of the five courts. FSU jumped out to a quick start by winning the first set on four courts, which eventually led to a 2-0 lead. Long Beach State fought back and closed the score to 2-1 before Florida State strung together victories on the last two courts that went to a third set.
Seniors Jace Pardon and Sarah Wickstrom continued their winning ways on Tuesday. Pardon and Wickstrom won both of their matches including all four sets in impressive fashion. In their first match, they defeated Irvine Valley College’s Marisa Doran and Annie Mitchem 21-9, 21-11. Pardon and Wickstrom got Florida State on the board first in its match against Long Beach State as the senior tandem rolled passed Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Chelsea Cabrajac 21-13, 21-12. FSU’s top pair moved to 4-0 on the season and have yet to drop a set.
Florida State’s most experienced duo also moved to 4-0 on the season. Senior Melanie Pavels and junior Julie Brown added a pair of wins to their record on Tuesday. After their strong start to the season, Corso moved them up a spot in the lineup to play on Court 3. Pavels and Brown made the most of that opportunity with a victory over Hailee Earnest and Hannah Matt of Irvine Valley College 21-9, 21-7. The veteran pair had a more difficult time in their second match against Long Beach State’s Jenelle Hudson and Bre Mackie. The match went into an epic third-set in which the pairs went back-and-forth until Pavels and Brown edged out Hudson and Mackie to win 21-17, 14-21, 22-20.
“It was great volleyball,” Corso said. “It was really close. The pair from Long Beach State played very similarly to Julie and Mel. It was almost like they were playing themselves. It was very dynamic and very stressful, but a really fun match. That was a huge win for Julie and Mel.”
Junior Annie Montgomery made it into the starting lineup for the first time this season. She played on Court 5 with freshman Vanessa Freire and they were able to come out with two victories. Montgomery and Freire had wins over IVC’s Hailey Jones and Shaelyn Perez, and Rachel Nieto and Sammee Thomas of LBSU, both by the same score of 21-11, 21-13.
The Seminoles earned their first ranked victory of the season in their defeat of the Beach, 4-1.
“We need to capitalize on our momentum,” Corso said. “We had a great day today. We are looking forward to the matchups tomorrow. We have our work cut out for us to beat Pepperdine on their home court. We know we are capable of doing it. TCU will also be interesting because they are a brand new program.”

Noles Unable to Get Revenge
ZUMA BEACH, CA – The No. 4 Florida State sand volleyball team defeated TCU (W, 5-0), but fell against No. 2 Pepperdine (L, 4-1) on Wednesday. Both of the Seminoles losses have been against ranked opponents this season.
Florida State was unable to get its revenge against Pepperdine. The Wave defeated the Seminoles last year at the AVCA National Championships, 4-3. Pepperdine hosted Florida State on Wednesday and the Wave proved to be too much for the Seminoles to handle.
“I knew that Pepperdine was going to be very good,” head coach Danalee Corso said. “They have a bunch of experience and it was on their home turf. We now know what the bar is and what we have to do. We are learning how to travel and play on the road. Unfortunately we fell short today.”
FSU won the first set on the bottom three courts but lost the second set on all five courts, giving Pepperdine the momentum.
Junior Kristina Pellitteri and freshman Victoria Paranagua gave Florida State its lone point of the match when they defeated Sophie Asprey and Taylor Rachich 21-15, 19-21, 16-14. Pepperdine tied the third set at 14-14 before Pelliteri and Paranagua rallied off two points, which included a block by Pellitteri to clinch the victory.
Florida State took on TCU in its next match of the day in the inaugural season for the Horned Frogs.
“TCU is new this year,” Corso said. “They are a much tougher challenge than people could imagine starting a brand new sport. I love seeing the sport grow.”
The Seminoles made quick work by sweeping the Horned Frogs. FSU only allowed more than 11 points in a set once, while each pair won in straight sets.
“We didn’t play our best today,” Corso said. “We need to get more consistent and get some rest. LMU and USC is going to be two more tough matches. We are going to have to regroup and learn from each match. Hopefully we can come out victorious.”

FSU Gets another Ranked Win.
LOS ANGELES, CA – The No. 4 Florida State sand volleyball team finished the dual match portion of its West Coast road trip on Friday. FSU defeated No. 6 LMU (W, 3-2) in its first match, but fell to No. 3 USC (L, 4-1) in its second match of the double header at Merle Norman Stadium.
“It is really difficult to play on the road,” head coach Danalee Corso said. “We have played with four different brands of balls, all kind of different scenarios, formats and all different types of beaches. I think this is why we do so well at the end of the year because this is a very tough trip for us, but we learn and grow so much.”
Florida State clinched the match quickly against Loyola Marymount by getting wins in straight sets on the first three courts that finished for its sixth victory of the season.
Junior Annie Montgomery and freshman Vanessa Freire got the Noles on the board first with their victory over Kristen Castellanos and Taylor Scioscia 21-11, 21-11. Freire is now tied for second on the team with five wins this season.
In their first match together this year, senior Taylor Nyquist and redshirt sophomore Katherine Plessy pulled out a win on Court 3 against Avery Brown and Anne Marie Taylor 21-15, 21-18.
The Seminoles started in a hole against the Trojans in their next match with an injury forcing them to forfeit on Court 1.
Junior Nina Pellitteri and freshman Tory Paranagua kept their impressive play going on Friday by adding two more wins to their record. Pellitteri and Paranagua started the day with a victory over LMU’s Rachelle Suaava and Hannah Tedrow 21-15, 21-19. They followed that performance with another straight set win against Nicolette Martin and Allie Wheeler of USC 21-19, 21-19. After dropping their first two matches of the season, Pellitteri and Paranagua have won six matches in a row.
“It has been a very grueling trip both mentally and physically,” Corso said. “I think the entire country has gotten better. There has been a significant difference from the quality of play from a year ago. It is going to make it a very interesting rest of the season, but we are excited for it and we will be ready. We know what we have to work on. Our focus now is to win the East region.”

Pairs Tournament Concludes West Coast Road Trip.
LOS ANGELES, CA – The No. 4 Florida State sand volleyball team competed in the 2015 USC Pairs Tournament on Saturday to conclude its West Coast road trip. The Seminoles had six different pairings come away with wins and had four of the eight teams in the quarterfinals.
“Pairs events are always interesting because it allows us to play the majority of our team and it gives them the opportunity to perform,” head coach Danalee Corso. “We played really hard today. One of our strengths is flexibility and practicing with different partners. We have the ability to make adjustments.”
Junior Nina Pellitteri and freshman Tory Paranagua continued their success out west by reaching the semifinals at the pairs tournament. Pellitteri and Paranagua won their first two matches of the day to extend their match winning streak to eight before falling in the semifinals to USC’s No. 1 tandem and eventual champion Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes, 21-15, 21-15.
In the Round of 16, junior Annie Montgomery and freshman Vanessa Freire won in the highlight match of the day. Montgomery and Freire went toe-to-toe with USC’s No. 2 pair Sophie Bukovec and Alexa Strange. The match went into an epic tiebreaker with the Florida State duo pulling out the upset victory, 31-29.
“Annie and Vanessa had an incredible growth spurt this week,” Corso said. “They played better than I have ever seen them play today. They played great individually and great as a team. They incorporated a ton of the new techniques that we have been using. I am so proud of how confident they looked and the teamwork that they played with.”
Junior Kayla Joyce and sophomore Katie Horton won two of their three matches to reach the quarterfinals, including an upset victory over LMU’s No. 2 pair of Taylor Akana and Litara Keil, 28-20.
The Seminoles’ top tandem was the fourth FSU pair to reach the quarterfinals. Senior Melanie Pavels and junior Julie Brown was dominate in their only win of the day. The experience duo defeated Lindsay Carr and Kristen Castellanos of LMU, 28-8.
The Seminoles played six dual matches in a four-day span in three different cities. They went 4-2 over the course of their West Coast trip with the two losses coming against teams ranked in the top-3 in the country.
“It has been a grueling tour of nine days of travelling, but we got better every single day,” Corso said. “The girls got some very valuable experience.”

FSU Starts Strong at the Gamecock Invitational.
COLUMBIA, SC – The No. 4 Florida State sand volleyball team was able to win both of its matches on Friday. The Seminoles defeated Arizona State (W, 4-1) and Tulane (W, 5-0) in the first day of the Gamecock Invitational.
“It is great to have these wins after a long and grueling trip to California,” head coach Danalee Corso said. “We have learned a lot. We still have to continue to work, but experiencing these different environments will help us in the long run.”
Due to injury, Florida State is without Jace Pardon and Stephanie Pellitteri. Despite losing two of its top players, the Noles didn’t lose a step as they won nine of their 10 matches in the double header.
“It is always a loss when two of your best players are not in the lineup due to injuries; however, one of our best traits is that we have a lot of depth,” Corso said.”
Junior Nina Pellitteri and freshman Tory Paranagua continued their impressive play with a pair of victories. The duo moved up to the top-spot in the lineup and didn’t disappoint. In their first match they took down Arizona State’s Jordan Checkal and Bethany Jorgensen in straight sets 21-15, 21-19. Pellitteri and Paranagua followed that performance with a win over Tea Juric and Jackie Wegner 21-11, 24-22. The young pair have now won a team-high 10 matches this season, including 10 of their last 11.
“Nina and Tory continue to be a hot team,” Corso said. “They are playing very well.”
With players missing, Florida State had to shake up its lineup on Friday.
Senior Taylor Nyquist and junior Kayla Joyce played together for the first time. The new partnership cruised to both of their victories in dominating fashion by holding their opponents to under 13 points in three of the four sets they played. Nyquist and Joyce defeated Frances Giedraitis and Andi Lowrance of Arizona State 21-8, 21-12. In their second match they played Tulane’s Miah Diirell and Sarah Strasner and won 21-5, 21-17.
“Taylor and Kayla were a pair that we put together on the fly,” Corso said. “They did very well considering that they haven’t had a day to practice together.”
Senior Sarah Wickstrom had a new partner as well because of the loss of her usual partner, Jace Pardon. Wickstrom teamed up with sophomore Sierra Sanchez and went 2-0 on the day, winning all four of their sets.
“We are very excited to be on the SEC Network tomorrow,” Corso said. “It is great to come to a site that is very professionally laid out. Seeing the TV cameras is very exciting for our team.”

Noles Conclude Gamecock Invitational.
COLUMBIA, SC – The No. 4 Florida State sand volleyball team split its two matches on Sunday in the final day of the Gamecock Invitational. The Seminoles defeated Carson-Newman (W, 5-0) but fell to Georgia State (L, 3-2).
“There are no easy dual matches anymore,” head coach Danalee Corso. “Everyone is closing the gap. The rallies are very long because everybody is playing great defense, so the matches are a lot more taxing than they have ever been. We have to learn to play better when fatigued and to play within those conditions. It will come with experience.”
FSU dropped its first match to Georgia State. The Noles had a 2-1 lead, but were unable to close out the Panthers.
“We have had a very exhausting last two weeks,” Corso said. “Our match against South Carolina ended last night around 9 p.m. and our match against Georgia State this morning was at 9 a.m. Some of the girls had a difficult time and Georgia State played great.”
In Florida State’s next match, they bounced back after the loss to Georgia State and rolled over Carson-Newman with the clean sweep.
Sophomore Annie Montgomery and freshman Vanessa Freire continued their strong play on Sunday winning both of their matches. In their first match, they defeated Georgia State’s Natalie Wilson and Delaney Rohan 21-15, 21-19. Montgomery and Freire followed that victory with a straight set win over Taylor Lowe and Kristina Hill of Carson-Newman 21-13, 21-14. The FSU pair has now won six straight matches.
Senior Taylor Nyquist and redshirt-sophomore Katherine Plessy also won both of their matches. They got passed Jessica Fourspring and Alexis Townsend of Georgia State in straight sets 21-17, 21-18 and Carson-Newman’s Lindsey Wells and Morgan Harlan 21-8, 21-6.
Florida State concluded the Gamecock Invitational by winning five of its six matches.

“This weekend was a great time for all of our pairs to compete," head coach Danalee Corso said. "It was very competitive. We are still working on some different lineups due to injury. The fact that Taylor and Melanie found quick chemistry was great. We are continuing to grow each week as a team.”
Nyquist and Pavels finished the day winning all four of their matches. The pair defeated Florida State’s top tandem Tory Paranagua and Nina Pellitteri in the Gold bracket final, 21-15, 21-11.
Redshirt sophomores Blyss Harkness and Katherine Plessy were winners of the Silver bracket. The duo went 4-1 on the day, including a three-set victory over Meghan Conway and Kayla Joyce in the finals 21-15, 17-21, 15-12.
The Seminoles went a perfect 7-0 against Gulf Coast State College pairs.
“We are showing a lot of depth," Corso said. "It was nice to see the players from Gulf Coast State College come out and get a taste of playing some sand volleyball. We always want to help grow the sport in our community.”

Noles Sweep in Home Opener.
TALLAHASSEE, FL – The No. 5 Florida State sand volleyball team won both of its matches in its home opener on Tuesday. The Seminoles defeated ULM (W, 4-1) and LSU (W, 4-1) to remain undefeated all-time when playing at the FSU Sand Volleyball Complex.
“It was just so fun playing out here,” senior Sarah Wickstrom said. “We had a couple fans which was great to see. We were home and it is always fun to play on your home court. Playing with Sierra was awesome. It was a really fun night.”
FSU got off to quick starts in both matches, going up 4-0 in each of them.
All five of Florida State’s pairs got wins, with three different pairs winning both of their matches.
Junior Annie Montgomery and freshman Vanessa Freire dominated both of their opponents in convincing fashion. In their first match against ULM’s Kaitlyn Shearer and Taylor Zaeske, Montgomery and Friere won 21-13, 21-16. They gave FSU its first point against LSU when they defeated Emily Ehrle and Laura Whalen 21-7, 21-10. Montgomery and Friere have won nine of their last 10 matches.
On Court 3, senior Sarah Wickstrom and Sierra Sanchez clicked on all cylinders in their first match against Hadley Swartz and Bayleigh Hoffmann of ULM 21-11, 21-10. They were equally as impressive in their second match when they took on LSU’s Helen Boyle and Cheyenne Wood and won in straight sets 21-18, 21-14.
Florida State has started to get into a groove and has now won seven of its last eight matches.
“We are peaking at the right time,” Wickstrom said. “We are heading into a long weekend at Siesta, then from that point on its trying to get to nationals. I think where we are at right now is really good. I feel like we are recovering a little bit, at one point we were really tired, and now we are stepping it back up. I am looking forward to what we will be able to do.”

FSU Captures Fiesta Team Cup for Third Time in Four Years.
April 11, 2015
SIESTA KEY, FL – The Florida State sand volleyball team concluded the first day of competition at the Fiesta on Siesta Key tournament by winning the 2015 Fiesta Team Cup for the third time in four years. The Seminoles had a 32-12 combined record throughout the all-day event, including finals appearances in two Team Cup brackets.
“I am very proud of our team,” head coach Danalee Corso said. “Because of our depth, all of our players get a lot of attention and an opportunity to develop in a tournament like this. We rested up well for this event and played strong throughout the long day.”
Florida State was led by junior Annie Montgomery and freshman Vanessa Freire. The pair reached the Team Cup Gold Bracket finals and posted a 6-1 record on the day. Freire and Montgomery were winner in 10 of their last 11 matches heading into the tournament. Last year, Montgomery won the Silver Bracket with partner Julia Thompson.
“Annie and Vanessa are the most improved individuals and pair on our team,” Corso said. “They almost beat Loyola Marymount’s No. 1 team earlier this season, which is the best team in the nation. They beat a lot of good teams today and I am expecting them to have a great rest of the season.”
The Noles also got help from junior Julie Brown and redshirt sophomore Katherine Plessy who reached the semifinals, and from indoor volleyball players’ sophomore Katie Horton and freshman Cecilie Woie who made it to the quarterfinals in the Gold Bracket.
Junior Karlie Hauer and freshman Meghan Conway both played extremely well and made an appearance in the Team Cup Bronze Bracket finals. Today was the first time the pair has played together all season and they won four straight single elimination matches to reach the finals.
“This was the first time all of the indoor girls have played in a beach volleyball tournament for Florida State,” Corso said. “They had a hard time with the sun and the long day, but the surface of the beach allows them to move and jump better. I think that they had a great time and that is what excites me -- to introduce beach volleyball to people who have never played it before and for them to fall in love with it. I think it was a very successful day in that regard for the indoor girls that play on our team.”
The day started with the first matches of pool play for the Fiesta Pairs Competition, which consists of the top-3 pairs from each school. The Fiesta Pairs Competition bracket play will begin on Sunday to determine the top-pair in the tournament.
The Seminoles had a strong showing in the Pairs pool play, winning seven of the nine matches played.
Florida State’s No. 1 duo of seniors Taylor Nyquist and Melanie Pavels swept their pool with three straight victories and will compete in the Fiesta Pairs Gold Bracket.
Senior Sarah Wickstrom and sophomore Sierra Sanchez, and junior Nina Pellitteri and freshman Tory Paranagua dropped their first match in pool play, but won their next two matches to set themselves up nicely for bracket play.
“These long days help us get better leading up to National Championship,” Corso said. “Tomorrow is another opportunity to get stronger as a team.”
April 12, 2015
SIESTA KEY, FL – The Florida State sand volleyball team finished the 2015 Fiesta on Siesta Key tournament in impressive fashion. After winning the Team Cup on Saturday, the Seminoles won both Gold and Silver brackets in the Fiesta Pairs Competition on Sunday.
On the final day of competition, all nine of FSU’s pairs combined for a 22-3 record in their 25 total matches played. For the entire tournament the Seminoles went 54-15, including the Team Cup and titles in the Fiesta Pairs Gold and Silver brackets, the tournament’s three most coveted awards.
“This was a great weekend for our team,” head coach Danalee Corso said. “We have struggled against some of the East Coast teams this season, which is different than what we are used to in years past. All of the top East Coast schools participated in this tournament, so for us to do what we did this weekend, it will help build our confidence as National Championships quickly approaches.”
Florida State’s top pair of seniors Taylor Nyquist and Melanie Pavels struggled in their first two matches, dropping the first set in both. The experienced duo fought back and came out victorious to reach the Gold bracket finals. Nyquist and Pavels defeated Tulane’s Tea Juric and Jackie Wegner in straight sets 21-17, 21-18 and were crowned champions of the Gold bracket. They won all six matches in the tournament they played in.
“They kind of had a rough start and that has been one of their weaknesses,” Corso said. “If we can overcome that, they end up being a very experienced team who can take down anybody when they are at their best. Luckily we were able to get through that first match because they ended up winning the tournament just as they did in Panama City two weeks ago. I like seeing those seniors in the top position because that is when experience prevails.”
The only tandem who has played every match together this season for the Seminoles is junior Nina Pellitteri and freshman Tory Paranagua. They had to get passed their own teammates, senior Sarah Wickstrom and sophomore Sierra Sanchez in the semifinals in order to reach the finals. Paranagua and Pellitteri defeated Wickstrom and Sanchez 21-19, 21-14. In the finals, FSU’s No. 2 pair dominated Maddie Frome and Julia Mannisto of South Carolina to win the Silver bracket 21-9, 21-17. Paranagua and Pellitteri have a team-high 22 wins this season.
“This pair has huge potential to play great when everything is going right,” Corso said. “They make good adjustments, but being a split-blocking team they have to master all skills. It was great for them to play so many matches this weekend and play strong all the way through. As long as we can keep their bodies fresh, we are going to see great things from them the rest of the season.”
Junior Julie Brown and Katherine Plessy, and junior Annie Montgomery and Vanessa Freire combined for a 5-0 record in match pool play on Sunday.
The Seminoles looked strong in invitation pool play posting an 8-2 record and had three of the four pairs go undefeated.
“This is the only event where we can play all nine of our teams,” Corso said. “It is great that we have so many athletes and it was on display today. Depth is one of our strengths and I am proud of how everyone on our team played this weekend.”
“The way we set up the schedule with these pairs events is to have lots of different matchups and challenging competition,” Corso said. “These tournaments enable us to peak at the right time, going into National Championships. We are hoping we can use what we learned this weekend into next weekend and moving forward.”

Seniors Shine on Day 1 of FSU Pairs Tournament.
April 18, 2015
By Billy Clark, FSU Sports Information Intern
TALLAHASSEE, FL – Led by outstanding performances by seniors Melanie Pavels and Taylor Nyquist, the No. 5-ranked Florida State sand volleyball team collected 16 victories on Day 1 of the FSU Pairs Tournament. During the match, the Seminoles honored five seniors: Jace Pardon, Stephanie Pellitteri, Sarah Wickstrom, Pavels, and Nyquist.
Pardon, Pellitteri, Pavels and Wickstrom are the first athletes to play four years of collegiate sand volleyball at Florida State. The quartet were members of the inaugural FSU sand squad in 2012.
“This is the first group of players that I have had for four years so it is really fun to see them grow up,” FSU sand volleyball head coach Danalee Corso said. “I’m new to the NCAA scene so I saw them at 18 years old and now they are young women and leaders. It’s definitely a special group for me.”
On a humid day at the FSU Sand Volleyball Complex, Florida State welcomed No. 7 Georgia State, UAB and Eckerd College for 36 pool play matches.
The four teams will compete for the Team Cup on Sunday with the squad with the most points capturing the trophy. The point scale will work as follows: first place in the Gold pool will earn 12.5 points, second place will earn 12 points, third place 11.5 points and fourth place 11 points. The winner of the Silver pool will be awarded 10.5 points and so forth down the finishes of each pool.
Playing at the No. 1 position, Pavels and Nyquist led the way for the Noles and will compete in the Gold Division on Sunday.
“Melanie and Taylor are playing at the No. 1 spot for us as seniors and Sarah has played well for us too for all four years,” Corso said. “It’s always great to have the seniors in those top positions because we really need experience at that level. Everyone is good, but there is something that is different that a four-year or a five-year senior brings to the table and that’s important for our success to have them out there.”
Pavels and Nyquist cruised to a 3-0 mark on Saturday to start their final regular season competition. The duo defeated UAB’s Rachel Fairbanks and Sara Rishell (21-19, 21-17), Georgia State’s Milani Pickering and Majda Dostalova (21-15, 21-13) and Emily Carpenter and Madison Whiting of Eckerd College (21-8, 21-5).
“We ended really well by winning all of our matches today,” Pavels said. “To be a senior and to become a four-year student-athlete, especially coming here during the inaugural year, it’s been really cool to end it this way.”
Pavels and Nyquist continue to build momentum as the season comes to a close. Following Sunday’s competition, the veteran pair will lead the Seminoles at the fourth-annual AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships from May 1 to May 3 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
“The No. 1 thing for us is energy conservation,” Pavels said. “We have to ice up and rest so you can be playing at your best even if it’s the last match of the day. We are staying focused and keeping our eyes on the prize – which is the national championship.”
FSU’s No. 2 pair of junior Nina Pellitteri and freshman Tory Paranagua finished with a 2-1 record, defeating pairs from UAB and Eckerd, but falling to Georgia State’s No. 1 pair of Jansen Button and Sara Olivova 22-20, 21-14.
Wickstrom and sophomore Sierra Sanchez also went 2-1 on the day, taking down the No. 1 pairs from Eckerd College and UAB.
Junior Annie Montgomery and redshirt sophomore Blyss Harkness battled hard in FSU’s final match of the day, but fell in three sets 14-21, 21-17, 19-21 to Georgia State’s Jessica Fourspring and Alexis Townsend. Montgomery and Harkness posted a 1-2 overall record.
Florida State had two other pairs finish 3-0 in addition to Pavels and Nyquist.
Sophomore Katie Horton and freshman Cecilie Woie as well as juniors Karlie Hauer and Kayla Joyce both finished undefeated without dropping a set in pool play.
Junior Julie Brown and redshirt sophomore Katherine Plessy also competed for Florida State on Saturday, finishing with a 2-1 record. Their only loss was to Georgia State’s Delaney Rohan and Natalie Wilson.

TALLAHASSEE, FL – The No. 5-ranked Florida State sand volleyball team captured its second consecutive Team Cup Championship at the FSU Pairs Challenge on Sunday at the FSU Sand Volleyball Complex.
The event ended because of severe weather over halfway through Sunday’s competition. However, two-thirds of the matches were completed before the storm descended upon Tallahassee, giving the Seminoles enough time to cement themselves as the two-day event’s champion.
Florida State finished with 47.5 points to cruise past No. 7 Georgia State (40.5), UAB (32) and Eckerd College (26.5).
FSU’s No. 1 pair of seniors Melanie Pavels and Taylor Nyquist and No. 2 duo of junior Nina Pellitteri and Tory Paranagua both finished 2-0 in the Gold Division pool which featured the top four teams. Both tandems defeated Georgia State’s top two pairs.
“Today was a great day,” Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. “We had a couple losses on Saturday that we shouldn’t have had, and we won those matches today.
“We need to learn how to come out strong the first day like we are the second day. We are learning that and we are getting better. We have a few more weeks to continue to improve.”
The strongest performance on Sunday came from Pellitteri and Paranauga. The Garnet and Gold pair capped Saturday with a two-set loss to Georgia State’s top tandem of Jansen Button and Sara Olivova, but avenged that loss with a convincing 21-13, 22-20 victory over the Panthers duo to seal the top two spots in the Gold Division for the Seminoles.
“We struggled a little bit yesterday in our last match so today we had to come out a lot stronger,” Pellitteri said. “It was pretty windy so we had to focus on ball control and hitting fast. We played really well and got our groove back.
“It was very good for us to win that last match (against Georgia State). It’s good to keep playing tough matches to prepare for the national championships.”
Pellitteri and Paranagua were scheduled to face Pavels and Nyquist later in the day to decide the individual pairs champion, but Sunday’s storms will force that matchup to practice later this week.
Pellitteri and Paranagua finished the weekend with a record of 5-1, while Pavels and Nyquist went 6-0.
Also winning Team Cup divisions were senior Sarah Wickstrom and sophomore Sierra Sanchez (2-0 in the Silver), junior Julie Brown and redshirt sophomore Katherine Plessy (1-0 in AAA) and junior Annie Montgomery and sophomore Julia Thompson (2-0 in AA).
The Seminoles were so dominant on Sunday that their only loss came in a match against themselves. FSU finished 10-1 on Day 2 and 26-6 overall for the weekend with two of the losses against itself.
Playing at the No. 6 spot this weekend, sophomore Katie Horton and freshman Cecilie Woie also finished undefeated, going 4-0, including an impressive 23-21, 21-19 victory against Georgia State’s No. 5 duo.
The Seminoles lost two-time All-American and World University Games gold medalist Jace Pardon and team captain Stephanie Pellitteri to season-ending injuries earlier this season, but appear to be rolling into top form as the postseason approaches.
The Team Cup victory over Georgia State should place the Seminoles into their fourth consecutive AVCA Collegiate National Championships field on Monday, and also atones for the 3-2 loss to the Panthers suffered earlier this season.
Despite missing arguably its top two players for the majority of the season, Florida State is on track to compete for a fourth straight Final Four appearance at Gulf Shores, Ala., in two weeks – a testament to the Noles’ depth and coaching this season.
“It’s all about how you finish,” Corso said. “We have a very short season so there is not a lot of room for error. We have to make corrections quickly and we’ve been able to do that every year. We are always better at the national championships than we are at the beginning of the season. We play our best and peak at the right time, and we are hoping to continue that this year.”

Noles Fall at Sand Nationals.
GULF SHORES, AL – The No. 6 Florida State sand volleyball team dropped both of its matches at the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships on Friday. The Seminoles fell to No. 3 FIU (L, 5-0) and No. 2 Hawai’i (L, 3-2) to conclude its dual match season.
“It was a tough weekend,” head coach Danalee Corso said. “We are not used to losing like this. We had some injuries early on that kind of put us in a partner tailspin. Still, we probably should have had a stronger weekend. It is what it is. We have to take that to help motivate us for next year. Everybody is playing great. Unfortunately it just wasn’t our day.”
FSU failed to avenge its loss to FIU earlier in the season. After dropping three first sets, the Noles bounced back to force a third-set on three courts but was unable to avoid the sweep by the Panthers.
The Seminoles suffered another loss in a must-win match against Hawai’i with the loser being eliminated from the tournament. The Warriors clinched the match after winning the first three courts. Florida State won on courts 4 and 5 to finish the match as its season came to an end.
Junior Annie Montgomery and freshman Vanessa Freire nabbed FSU’s first point with a victory over Mikayla Tucker and Ka’iwi Schucht 18-21, 21-18, 15-9.
In their first competitive match playing together, junior Julie Brown and freshman Cecilie Woie looked very strong in both matches. The pair defeated London Chow and Hannah Zalopany 21-10, 18-21, 17-15.
“It was really important for me and Cecilie to come back stronger in our second match,” Brown said. “We were bummed about losing the first one, but we talked about what we needed to fix and we fixed it. We actually played really well together.”
Florida State finishes the season with a 13-6 record.
“I think we are all ready for summer, to play together and improve then get back to Tallahassee next fall,” Montgomery said. “We are going to come back strong next year and be ready to compete.”

Season Ends in Pairs Tournament.
GULF SHORES, AL – The Florida State sand volleyball team had its top pair participate in the AVCA Sand Volleyball National Pairs Championship tournament on Sunday. Seniors Taylor Nyquist and Melanie Pavels fell to Georgia State’s Jansen Button and Sara Olivova in a tight three-set match 21-14, 18-21, 15-13.
After dropping the first, Nyquist and Pavels were able to recover and win a close second set to force a third. The Noles got out to a quick 7-5 lead in the final set. Button and Olivova fought right back to tie the match at 13-13 before a pair of consecutive points gave Georgia State the win.
The match eliminated Nyquist and Pavels from the tournament and ended Florida State’s season.
The experienced duo had a successful season, posting a 15-4 record and earned some hardware when they won the Gold bracket at the Fiesta on Siesta Key Pairs Challenge.
The top overall seed, Sara Hughes and Kelly Claes of Southern California, won four matches in a row en route to claiming the Pairs title. Hughes and Claes defeated Loyola Marymount’s Betsi Metter and Sarah Sponcil in straight sets 21-12, 21-18. USC also claimed the Team title on Saturday.
Florida State completed the season with a 13-6 record and a tie for seventh finish at the AVCA Sand Volleyball National Championships.
