FSU Sand Volleyball improved to 2-0 with 5-0 win at Tulane.
NEW ORLEANS, LA - Two days after winning the nation's first-ever collegiate sand volleyball match in dominating fashion, the Florida State sand volleyball team captured another impressive victory on Monday afternoon at Tulane. The Seminoles didn't drop a set en route to defeating the Green Wave, 5-0, at the Coconut Beach Volleyball Courts at The Dock In Slidell.
FSU improved to 2-0, as the Seminoles also claimed a 5-0 victory at UAB on Saturday. In two matches, FSU has dropped just one set.
"The team played well again," head coach Danalee Corso said. "They all played great. We have a lot of depth and Tulane is still building their sand volleyball program. Part of winning is preparation. Florida State has spent a year planning and practicing, and it's paying off."
Senior Visnja Djurdjevic posted some eye-popping statistics in a return to where she started her collegiate volleyball career. The three-time indoor volleyball All-American, who played for the Green Wave from 2008-09 before transferring to Florida State, tallied a match-high 20 kills to go along with five aces and eight digs. She and freshman Melanie Pavels (14 digs) nabbed a 21-11, 21-14 win over Milena Dragovic and Anna Wruck in the No. 3 team spot.
Because of limitations at the Coconut Beach facility, the Nos. 4 and 5 teams began the match, and the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 tandems followed.
In the afternoon's most lopsided matchup, the team on Jeassica McGregor (10 kills) and Sarah Wickstrom (11 kills) breezed past Tulane's Shefali Arora and Amber Bennett, 21-8, 21-6 at No. 5.

Junior Aurora Newgard's 14-kill, 20-dig double-double led FSU's No. 1 squad of her and sophomore Brittany Tiegs past Lilly Wolfe and Cori Marton, 21-15, 21-12.
At No. 2, senior Kate Stepanova (10 kills) and freshman Jace Pardon cruised by Grace Weaver and Nikki Osuna, 21-7, 21-11, behind Pardon's 14 kills and 11 aces.

Inaugural Sweep.
The FSU sand volleyball team swept Tulane in a home-opening doubleheader on Tuesday.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Not even mother nature can halt the dominant run the Florida State sand volleyball team is on to begin the inaugural season of the NCAA's newest emerging sport.
The Seminoles weathered a one-hour, 22-minute lightning warning delay in the middle of its first match against Tulane before sweeping the Green Wave, 5-0, in both matches of a home-opening doubleheader at the Seminole Sand Volleyball Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
Florida State improved to 6-0 and continued its incredible stretch of having won every dual match without dropping a single set.
"It was a blast," Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. "Every day we are making history. I'm really proud of our team. We got a head start, but these teams are closing the gap on us. We've played Tulane three times now, and they've gotten better each time. Our team still maintained a high level throughout both matches and that's all I can ask from them."
The closest Florida State came to dropping a set came on court No. 5, but sophomore Jeassica McGregor and junior Lacey Blackman were able to edge Tulane's pair of Milica Jovic and Shefali Arora, 21-18, in the first set thanks to six aces - including four straight at one point - from McGregor. The FSU duo then went on to win the second set, 21-11. In the second match, the pair had a much easier victory, cruising past Arora and Amber Bennett, 21-12, 21-11.
Arguably the most impressive win for the Seminoles was the 21-4, 21-14 smackdown freshman Stephanie Pellitteri and senior Mallory Kiley put on Tulane's Olivia Utt and Azarri Badwai in the first match. Pellitteri had 14 kills and Kiley tallied 10 kills. The duo moved up to court three in the second match and defeated Anna Wruck and Lilly Wolfe of the Green Wave in straight sets (21-16, 21-11).
Florida State had the first match nearly locked up when a lightning warning delayed the competition at 4:37 p.m. Play resumed at 5:59 p.m. Still, many fans stayed for the second half of the event.
"I thought today went really smooth," Corso said. "We had a great time. I'm hoping we can grow from here. Hopefully more and more fans can jump on the Seminole bandwagon and come support us. We'd love it!"
The Seminoles' pair of senior indoor volleyball All-Americans, Jekatarina Stepanova and Visnja Djurdjevic, also had fantastic performances in the sand.
Stepanova teamed with freshman Jace Pardon to win on court No. 1, 21-8, 21-13, versus Cori Martone and Grace Weaver in the first match before drilling Tulane's second-best squad, Milena Dragovic and Nikki Osuna, 21-6, 21-8, on court No. 2 in the second match.
Stepanova had 13 kills and a doubleheader-best 14 digs in the second match.
"It was definitely exciting," the Riga, Latvia, native said. "We're making history. It's great."
Djurdjevic teamed with freshman Melanie Pavels and won at court No. 3 over Wruck and Wolfe, 21-13, 21-7, in match one before routing Utt and Badawi, 21-7, 21-9, on court No. 4 in match two.
Djurdjevic recorded the afternoon's highest kill total (16) in the second match.
Junior captain Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs grabbed dominating victories at both the No. 2 and No. 1 spots for the Seminoles.
The pair hammered Dragovic and Osuna, 21-6, 21-7, on court No. 2 in the first match, and defeated Martone and Weaver, 21-11, 21-13, in the second match on court No. 1.
Pavels was able to perfectly sum up the Seminoles' feelings after the first-ever sand volleyball match on FSU's campus.
"This first home match was great" Pavels said. "We had a lot of fans here. I think a lot of people want to know what sand volleyball is and learn the culture. It was a lot of fun. It's exciting. We've been working so hard and to have it pay off like it has is a great accomplishment."
In six dual matches to start the season, the Seminoles have a perfect 30-0 mark against their opponents.

The Seminoles finished runner-up in the team competition at USC's tournament on Saturday.
March 17, 2012
LOS ANGELES, CA - Led by the No. 2 tandem of junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs, the Florida State sand volleyball team finished second in the team competition on Saturday during day two of USC's three-day, four-team tournament held at Santa Monica's Annenberg Community Beach House.
Pepperdine won the team title with 18 points in the double elimination flight play, while the Seminoles followed with 12. USC and Long Beach state each scored 10 points.
All four schools had one of its five pairs teams in each of the five flights, with all of the No. 1 teams grouped together and all of the similarly ranked teams in the same flights, as well.
Newgard and Tiegs survived unfavorable rainy and windy weather conditions as well as any duo in the tournament. The tandem picked up a pair of three-set wins over USC's Katie Fuller and Natalie Hagglund (19-21, 21-17, 15-12) and Pepperdine's Lilla Frederick and Kim Hill (21-17, 13-21, 15-12), before claiming the No. 2 flight championship with a 21-19, 21-9 victory over Frederick and Hill again.
"Brittany and Aurora figured it out today," volunteer assistant coach Brian Corso said. "The team that was able to make the adjustments to the weather today was going to get the win and they were able to do that. We had a great day overall. We were battling the weather as well as the opponent."
Saturday's competition lasted over six hours and featured a pair of 30-minute weather delays.
Senior Jekaterina Stepanova and freshman Jace Pardon finished second in the No. 1 flight, while the Seminole duo of senior Visnja Djurdjevic and freshman Melanie Pavels earned runner-up in the No. 3 flight.
Stepanova and Pardon finished 2-2 in their flight with both of their losses coming against Pepperdine's top team of Catilin Racich and Summer Ross.
Djurdjevic and Pavels also tallied a 2-2 mark in their group with both losses coming to the Waves, including a hard-fought, three-set defeat to Victoria Adelhelm and Kellie Woolever.
FSU's No. 4 team of senior Mallory Kiley and freshman Stephanie Pellitteri and No. 5 team of junior Lacey Blackman and sophomore Jeassica McGregor both finished fourth in their flights.
Sunday's final day of play will be single elimination bracket play to crown a pairs champion among all 20 pairs teams in the tourney.
Florida State won two of the five pairs flights, while Pepperdine took the other three, during pool play on Friday. The Waves posted an overall record of 12-3 during day one. Florida State went 8-7, followed by USC at 7-8 and Long Beach State at 3-12. The results of Friday's pool play, which saw one pairs team from each school compete randomly in each of the five pools, determined the seedings for Sunday's bracket play.
The pair went undefeated at the four-team tournament in Santa Monica.
March 18, 2012
LOS ANGELES, CA - A third-seed, an early deficit, a two-time world champion and terrible weather conditions didn't faze Florida State junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs on Sunday on the final day of USC's four-team tournament at Santa Monica's Annenberg Community Beach House.
The duo completed an undefeated weekend by capturing the pairs championship over first-seeded Caitlin Racich and Summer Ross of Pepperdine in three sets, 16-21, 21-16, 15-10.
Newgard and Tiegs were massive underdogs, not only because the duo is FSU's No. 2 team and it was facing Pepperdine's No. 1 squad, but because Ross is widely considered one of the world's best beach volleyball players.
Ross won world championships in both the under-19 division and the under-21 division in 2010 and was named USA Volleyball Beach Female Athlete of the Year that same year.
"It was a huge win," Tiegs said. "Our ball control was great. That's what was key. The weather affected everyone, but we just kept our passes low. Mentally, we weren't scared of anybody and physically, we had no doubt we were prepared today. We were seeded (third) and were underdogs. It feels phenomenal."
Tiegs and Newgard defeated their teammates, senior Jekaterina Stepanova and freshman Jace Pardon in the semifinals of the single-elimination 20-team tournament. Five teams from each school (FSU, Pepperdine, Long Beach State and host USC) competed.
Newgard and Tiegs began the day by dispatching Long Beach State's Tyler Jackson and Janisa Johnson, 21-17, 21-15.
In the quarterfinals, the FSU pair took out Caitlin LeDouz and Tara Roenicke of LBSU, 21-16, 15-21, 15-5 to set up the semifinals match with Stepanova and Pardon.
Stepanova and Pardon, FSU's No.1 team, were seeded second and defeated Seminole teammates Mallory Kiley, a senior, and Stephanie Pelliterri, a freshman, in the round of 16. Kiley and Pellitteri won a play-in game over Long Beach State's Lauren Minkel and Jocelyn Neely, 18-21, 23-21, 15-10.
Stepanova and Pardon defeated Pepperdine's No. 2 duo of Lilla Frederick and Kim Hill, 21-19, 21-19 to advance to the semifinals.
Newgard and Tiegs grabbed a 21-14, 21-10 victory over their teammates to make the final, avenging a loss to Stepanova and Pardon at last weekend's Clash of the Collegians event.
Weather on Sunday was cold (around 50 degrees) and winds were high. FSU head coach Danalee Corso and Tiegs estimated gusts to be at 30 miles per hour at times.
But like all of the other factors, the weather was no match for Newgard and Tiegs.
"They were able to stay tough mentally," Corso said. "That's what it was all about today and this whole weekend. Nobody expected us to come here and perform like we did against the West Coast teams. Nobody expected us to win. This was a huge success, but these other teams are going to keep getting better - so we can't take this performance for granted."
Seedings for Sunday's play were determined by Friday's (March 16) pool play, which saw one pairs team from each school compete randomly in each of the five pools. Pepperdine dominated that first day of play, as three of its five pairs teams won all three of their pool play matches to help the Waves post an overall record of 12-3 (Florida State went 8-7 on Friday, followed by USC at 7-8 and Long Beach State at 3-12).
Florida State finished second in Saturday's team competition with 12 points, behind Pepperdine's 18. USC and Long Beach State had 10.

FSU Takes Team Title at Home Event.
The Noles went 3-0 against USC, FGCU and Stetson.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The Florida State sand volleyball team continued its undefeated streak in dual matches by going 3-0 on Saturday during Day 1 of competition at the inaugural Seminole Sand Battle held at the Seminole Sand Volleyball Complex.
The four-team event features Southern California, Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson along with the host Seminoles.
Florida State captured the team championship by picking up a pair of 5-0 victories over both Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson before handing the Trojans a 4-1 loss in the day's final match. Over 500 fans showed up to support Florida State's newest sport throughout the day, as the event was pushed up by two hours to 8 a.m. to start because of storm threats.
"I'm pleased because USC is an awesome team," FSU head coach Danalee Corso said. "We saw them last week, and this week it was less windy. Nonetheless, our team played great. I'm very proud of them. It's been very exciting to see how many people in Tallahassee our following us. It doesn't hurt that we are playing well. It's fun to follow a team that is winning. I think FSU has given us every resource to be successful so far. The team has been working hard and we've been putting it all together. It's a great combination."
Both FSU and USC came into the final match having swept their previous two matches over the Eagles and the Hatters, so their matchup was expected to be a tough battle.
The Seminoles jumped out to win the first set on four of five courts, however, and cruised to victories on Courts Nos. 1, 2 and 5.
Graduate Student Caitlin Haworth and sophomore Jeassica McGregor flew past USC's Megan Thornberry and Kati Duddridge, 21-10, 21-10, on Court 5 to put FSU ahead 1-0.
After senior Mallory Kiley and Stephanie Pellitteri dropped FSU's only match of the day to USC's Sam Hirschman and Kendall Bateman on Court 4, 21-6, 21-11, the Seminoles quickly clinched the team title by grabbing straight-set wins on Court 1 and Court 2. FSU's No. 1 tandem of junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs made quick work of USC's Sara Show and Geena Urango, 21-14, 21-17, while the Seminoles' No. 2 pair of senior Jekaterina Stepanova and freshman Jace Pardon defeated the Trojan duo of Natalie Hagglund and Katie Fuller, 21-17, 21-14.
FSU's fourth point came in a thrilling three-set win as senior Visnja Djurdjevic and freshman Melanie Pavels grabbed a hard-fought 21-19, 14-21, 15-13 victory over USC's Kelly Irvin and Kirby Burnham.
"It feels so amazing to win in front of this big crowd today," Haworth said. "We have a ton of talent and skill, and we're ready to play. Everybody put themselves in great position for tomorrow, and we're hoping to come up with some more big wins."
The three wins on Saturday give the Seminoles an unblemished 9-0 mark in duals and a 44-1 record in individual pairs matches in duals.
Newgard and Tiegs will earn the No. 1 seed in Sunday's double-elimination "Gold Bracket" featuring the event's top 10 teams. The bottom 10 teams will play in a single elimination "Silver Division" bracket.
"It feels good being the top seed," Newgard said. "It's great to have some momentum and go into Sunday strong."

Tiegs and Newgard Win Again.
FSU's No. 1 pair captured its second straight championship on Sunday at the Seminole Sand Tournament.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - After losing in their first match of the pairs tournament on Sunday at the Seminole Sand Tournament, junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs faced an uphill battle in the double-elimination "Gold" division at the Seminole Sand Volleyball Complex.
Good thing, FSU's No. 1 duo was up for the challenge.
After falling in three sets to their teammates, senior Visnja Djurdjevic and freshman Melanie Pavels, in their first match of the day, Tiegs and Newgard rebounded to win five consecutive matches to capture their second straight pairs championship. They also won the pairs title at the USC Tournament last weekend.
"It was so fun to be out here playing against these great teams at our home courts," said Tiegs, who was named the event's MVP in a vote of the coaches. "Aurora and I play so well together. We'll have our off games, but when we click we are hard to beat."
Following their loss, Newgard and Tiegs cruised through three consolation matches, before narrowly defeating another set of FSU teammates, senior Kate Stepanova and freshman Jace Pardon, 21-13, 21-23, 15-13, in the semifinals.
Pavels and Djurdjevic also won in the semifinals, capturing a two-set victory over USC's Kelly Irvin and Kirby Burnham, 21-16, 21-16, setting up an exciting all-Nole final, and a rematch from earlier in the day.
Hungry for payback, Newgard and Tiegs jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first set of the "Gold" final against their teammates, and cruised to a 21-16 win in the first set, as Newgard was all over the court tallying 11 kills and 14 digs.
The second set was tied 14-14, before Newgard and Tiegs ended on a 7-1 run to win 21-15 and grab the title.
"Survival of the fittest is what that final match was right there," Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. "Brittany and Aurora are so lean and mean, and strong. They are so well conditioned. They work really hard in the weight room, on the track and on the court. They deserved the title. I'm also proud of our No. 3 team - Visnja and Melanie. They had yet to make a final and did today. Both teams played six matches today, and the play was still great."
Sunday's pairs tournament was broken into two different divisions with the top 10 seeded teams competing in the "Gold" bracket and the bottom 10 seeded squads in the "Silver" bracket. In addition to Florida State and Southern California competing in the tournament, Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson were also at the competition.
FSU's No. 5 team of sophomore Jeassica McGregor and graduate student Caitlin Haworth wrapped up an undefeated weekend by cruising through the "Silver" bracket to win the title in that division.
In the "Silver" final, the pair breezed past USC's Megan Thornberry and Katie Duddridge, 21-13, 21-19. It was McGregor and Haworth's first tournament playing together. The pair went 7-0 over two days.
"We communicated really well together and stayed consistent in our hits and our sets," McGregor said. "We had great chemistry. We went into the weekend with the goal of not letting our opponents score 15 on us. It was a great tournament. We had a ton of fun. The crowd provided us with great energy."
The weekend was an overall huge success for the Florida State sand volleyball program. Nearly 1,000 fans came to the FSU Sand Volleyball Complex courts to catch the action. The Seminoles also captured the event's team championship on Saturday, going 3-0.
"Jeassica and Caitlin played great today, too," Corso said. "I'm extremely proud of them, and proud of the whole team. The depth of our team is why we are doing so well. We have 15 solid players and they battle it out every day in practice. It's awesome. This was just a great weekend all-around."

FSU Sweeps Hawaii, Remains Undefeated.
The Seminoles captured back-to-back 4-1 victories over the Rainbow Wahine to improve to 11-0.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State sand volleyball team kept its undefeated streak intact on Thursday at the Seminole Sand Volleyball Complex, capturing back-to-back 4-1 victories over Hawaii in an afternoon doubleheader.
The Seminoles improved to 11-0 in dual matches in the inaugural collegiate sand volleyball season, and have all but locked up one of four spots at the AVCA National Championships, which will be held from April 27-29 in Gulf Shores, Fla.
"Hawaii was the one team we expected to be really good that we hadn't seen yet," Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. "We beat them 4-1 twice, so I feel good about where we are at. I just need to keep the team sharp, energized and healthy for the next four weeks until we get to the national championships."
Only FSU's No. 1 team of junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs had an off day, losing their two matches to the Rainbow Wahine.
FSU's other four teams made short work of Hawaii.
The Seminoles started out the day by winning the first set on every court in Match 1, and three Garnet & Gold tandems breezed to straight set victories.
Senior Jekateina Stepanova and freshman Jace Pardon defeated Hawaii's Larissa Nordyke and Ashley Lee, 21-17, 21-17, on Court 2 and senior Mallory Kiley and freshman Sarah Wickstrom cruised past the Rainbow Wahine's Mita Uiato and Elizabeth Blake, 21-9, 21-14.
Freshman Melanie Pavels and senior Visnja Djurdjevic put the Seminoles ahead 3-0 to clinch the win on Court 3 after Pavels delivered her third ace of the match to give the duo a 22-20, 21-18 win. Pavels also had the match-clinching point in the second end of the doubleheader.
"It felt good that I could finish out a match," Pavels said. "It's also awesome to win."
Graduate student Caitlin Haworth and Jeassica McGregor edged out a three-set win on Court 4 in Match 1, defeating Monica Stauber and Alex Griffiths, 21-6, 17-21, 16-14. McGregor tallied a staggering 32 digs and 18 kills in the match.
Newgard and Tiegs fell to Hawaii's No. 1 team of Elizabeth Stoltzman and Emily Hartong, 17-21, 21-17, 15-12.
FSU showed no rust in the second match after a 20-mintue break. The Seminoles won in straight sets on four of five courts. Only Newgard and Tiegs dropped a match, losing to Jane Croson and Ashley Lee, 21-18, 21-19 on Court 2.
Stepanova and Pardon moved up to the No. 1 Court for the second match where they dismantled Stoltzman and Hartong, 21-9, 21-11.
"Hopefully we can continue to play this well," Pardon said. "We'll have to face Hawaii again this weekend. We have to stay humble and focused, cool and collected. It was a great match. It feels good to defeat such a strong team. We had to battle it out."
Haworth and McGregor improved to 9-0 as team with their two wins on Thursday. The pair moved up from Court 5 to Court 4 against the 'Bows.
"We have three really, really good teams - that are capable of winning a tournament," Corso said. "I finally feel like I may have figured out our Nos. 4 and 5 teams with our combinations, too. Caitlin and Jeassica are undefeated. They're playing fantastic. We've had some good chemistry from the beginning."

Sand Volleyball Dominates Day 1 at UNF.
Pool play will resume at 8 a.m. on Sunday in Jacksonville.
March 31, 2012
JACKSONVILLE BEACH, FL - The Florida State sand volleyball team dominated the field during pool play on Day 1 of the UNF Sand Invitational presented by Chicago Pizza and Metro PCS on Saturday at the Jacksonville Beach courts.
Competition was suspended at around 7 p.m. and a few more pool play matches will be played starting at 8 a.m. Sunday morning.
In what is becoming a theme in this inaugural sand volleyball season, the Seminoles spent a lot of time waiting for the weather to cooperate. Saturday's northern Florida storms caused four separate weather delays and much of the play was spent under showers.
Those are playing conditions FSU has become accustomed to, however, and the Garnet and Gold didn't let the severe weather have an effect on their play.
"It was a mentally fatiguing day for the players," head coach Danalee Corso said. "It was start-stop, start-stop. That's tough. The weather has been following us, but that's part of the game. You've got to ride the wave. I'm really proud of the team. These courts are really hard to adjust to, and a lot different from our courts. We are pretty handedly in first-place, though. Hopefully, we can close out strong, and win the team competition tomorrow."
Saturday's competition featured seven pools of five teams. The top two finishers in each pool along with the top two third place finishers advance to Sunday's gold bracket play. A 12-team silver bracket and a seven-team bronze bracket will also be contested on Sunday.
The Seminoles are at the top or near the top of each of their pools. Leading the way on Saturday were the duos of senior Jekaterina Stepanova and freshman Jace Pardon and senior Visnja Djurdjevic and freshman Melanie Pavels. Both teams went 3-0 and neither dropped a set.
"It was a pretty good day," Stepanova said. "Luckily, Jace and I didn't have any of our matches get delayed. We didn't have to run off the court and take cover while were playing. We got our full matches in. This is a pretty good site. It's fun to be at the beach."
The tandem of junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs was the only Garnet and Gold tandem to play all four of its games, winning three and tying (splitting a pair of sets) with UAB's No. 1 squad.
Graduate student Caitlin Haworth and sophomore Jeassica McGregor wrapped up the day 1-1-1 (one win, one loss and one tie), while senior Mallory Kiley and freshman Stephanie Pellitteri went 2-1.
Tiegs and Newgard finished runners-up in the pairs championship.
April 1, 2012
JACKSONVILLE BEACH, FL - The Florida State sand volleyball team ran away with the team title and grabbed second- and third-place finishes in the pairs tournament on Sunday at the UNF Sand Invitational presented by Chicago Pizza and Metro PCS at the Jacksonville Beach courts.
The Garnet and Gold wrapped up Saturday's weather-delayed pool play early Sunday morning by winning all four of its matches in straight sets to finish with a 34-6 (sets won - sets lost) mark among seven pools to easily win the team championship.
All five Seminole tandems advanced to the top-16-team gold bracket pairs tournament. No other team placed more than two squads in the gold bracket.
Junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs lost a hard-fought, three-set battle to Hawaii's Jane Croson and Ashley Lee, 21-16, 19-21, 15-11, in the pairs championship. The FSU duo nearly won its third consecutive tournament pairs title, and now has two runner-up placements and two victories in four tournaments this season.
"It was an arduous weekend," head coach Danalee Corso said. "One of our top players (Jekaterina Stepanova) went down with a sprained ankle, but we still took second and third in the individual pairs championship, and we won the team championship by a large margin. I'm really happy. I'm really proud of Brittany and Aurora. They're playing great. Hawaii had a fantastic team. Jane Croson is a world champion who I used to train on the national team, so I knew they'd be good. We had wonderful volleyball in the final, and that's something to be excited about."
Tiegs and Newgard defeated Jacksonville's top duo in the semifinals, 23-21, 21-16. The pair went 6-1-1 on the weekend.
"Brittany and I didn't play as well on Thursday against Hawaii in Tallahassee, but throughout the weekend we really focused and made sure we were prepared," Newgard said. "We communicated well and we were clicking out there on the court. It was a great weekend. We had some weather trouble on Saturday, but today the weather was great. All of our teams played well today. We faced some really good competition. It was a lot of fun."
Tiegs and Newgard, the fifth-seed in the gold bracket, were joined in the semifinals by senior Visnja Djurdjevic and freshman Melanie Pavels, the third seed.
Djurdjevic and Pavels won their first six matches on the weekend before falling to Croson and Lee, 21-12, 21-14, with the finals berth on the line.
Tiegs, Newgard, Djurdjevic and Pavels were all named to the all-tournament team.
The foursome likely would've been joined by Stepanova and freshman Jace Pardon if Stepanova hadn't sprained her left ankle during the first round of the bracket tournament. The pair had steamrolled the competition all weekend and was the gold No. 1 seed, but had to withdraw midway through the second set against Jacksonville after winning 21-9 in set one.
Senior Mallory Kiley and freshman Stephanie Pellitteri (11th-seed) placed sixth, pushing Djurdjevic and Pavels to three sets in the quarterfinals, while graduate student Caitlin Haworth and sophomore Jeassica McGregor took ninth. Haworth and McGregor (12th-seed) unfortunately drew their teammates, Tiegs and Newgard, in the first round, and fell, 21-11, 21-17.
After Saturday's competition was sporadically interrupted by storms, Sunday's weather couldn't have been better.
The sun was out all day and temperatures stayed consistently in the mid-80s. Groups of beachgoers stopped by the courts and created a fun, raucous atmosphere - especially in the final.
Tiegs and Newgard avenged one of their losses from Thursday's dual against Hawaii in the quarterfinals, routing the Rainbow Wahine's No.1 squad of Elizabeth Stoltzman and Emily Hartong in straight sets, 21-13, 21-17.
Sunday's final gave the FSU duo another chance to atone for its only other non-FSU loss on the season against Croson and Lee.
Croson and Lee jumped out to a big lead and never looked back in set one, however. FSU opened up a large lead of its own in set two. The Seminoles let the `Bows back in the set late, though, and trailed, 19-18, when Tiegs had a vicious block that tied the second set at 19-19 and sparked FSU to the 21-19 second set win.
Croson's jump serve and hammer were too much in the third set of the finals. Tiegs and Newgard cut Hawaii's lead in the final set to 1, 12-11, but Croson's ace spurred three consecutive points for the Rainbow Wahine.
"We had great weather today and fantastic crowds for the finals," Corso said. "There was a great crowd for Hawaii and a great crowd for us. What's impressive to me is the level of volleyball for these young women. I'm really excited for USA Volleyball in general and for what collegiate sand volleyball is going to do for the sport. It was a great, fun weekend competing at the beach."

FSU Improves to 13-0.
Seminole sand volleyball sweeps both Stetson and FAU.
DELAND, FL - The Florida State sand volleyball team improved to 13-0 in dual matches on the season on Friday with a pair of 5-0 wins over Stetson and FAU at the Stetson Sand Volleyball Complex.
The Seminoles dropped only one set over 10 games in two dominating performances.
"We had a tough week of practice, so I'm happy with the results today," head coach Danalee Corso said. "Having us play tired this week was part of my plan. That's what we are going to have to do to win at Nationals in a few weeks. We played great today."
Junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs, FSU's No. 1 duo, defeated Stetson's top squad of Julie Bassett and Kaley Melville, 21-13, 21-11, before cruising past the Owls' No. 1 duo, 21-18, 21-13.
Moving up to the No. 2 position in place of freshman Jace Pardon and senior Jekaterina Stepanova was the tandem of senior Visnja Djurdjevic and Melanie Pavels. The duo routed Stetson's second team, 21-14, 21-14, and FAU's two tandem, 21-18, 21-13.
Freshman Stephanie Pellitteri replaced Stepanova and paired with Pardon as FSU's third team. The pair defeated Stetson, 21-17, 21-14, and FAU, 21-4, 21-11, earning praise from Corso.
"Stephanie and Jace really stepped up today," Corso said. "That was a great win. They probably stepped up the most of anybody today because they haven't really played together."
Stepanova suffered an ankle sprain last weekend at the UNF Sand Invitational and was held out of Friday's competition.
Sophomore Jeassica McGregor and freshman Sarah Wickstrom had the closest call of the day, taking three sets to beat Stetson's Katie DiGirolamo and Stephanie Marin, 21-16, 19-21, 15-10, in the battle of No. 4's. The pair followed up the win by hammering FAU, 21-4, 21-8, on court five.
Graduate student Caitlin Haworth and senior Mallory Kiley picked up victories at No. 5 versus Stetson (21-10, 21-15) and at No. 4 against FSU (21-5, 21-8).

Newgard and Tiegs Lead Noles to Fiesta Sweep.
The Seminoles swept first, second and third places in both brackets on Saturday.
SIESTA KEY, FL - Led by junior Aurora Newgard's dominant performance, the Florida State sand volleyball team swept both brackets and won the team competition at the Fiesta on Siesta Key on Saturday.
Newgard paired with sophomore Brittany Tiegs to capture first-place in the top-level "Fiesta" bracket, defeating teammates, senior Jekaterina Stepanova and freshman Jace Pardon, 28-16 in the final. Senior Mallory Kiley and graduate student Caitlin Haworth upset FSU's No. 3 team of senior Visnja Djurdjevic and freshman Melanie Pavels to take third-place.
It's the third pairs championship of the season for Newgard and Tiegs, who also won the FSU Sand Tournament and the USC Tournament in March.
"Everything clicked today," Newgard said. "Brittany and I played real well. We kept the ball low. In pool play, we kept almost every team under 10 points. We had a lot of energy. It's always kind of a bummer when you play your teammates in the final, but it also shows how well our team is playing - to have two teams in the finals. Hopefully we can take this momentum to Nationals in two weeks."
FSU sand volleyball head coach Danlee Corso described Newgard as an "All-World" performer for the Seminoles during the competition, hammering her jump serve and putting on a dazzling display with her passing and defense. She was also impressed with FSU's three tandems that played in the second division, "Siesta" bracket, which the Noles also took the first three places in.
Sophomore Jeassica McGregor and junior Fatma Yildirim didn't drop a match en route to grabbing the title. Junior Marija Milosavljevic teamed with the College of Charleston's Taeler Davis to finish second. Senior Amanda Saxton and junior Lacey Blackman took third.
The tournament featured 210 participants and 23 teams, one of the NCAA's largest events of the year and the largest sand volleyball competition in the country this year.

Sand Volleyball Wins a Pair, Finishes 15-0.
The Seminoles head to the national championships next weekend.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The Florida State sand volleyball team wrapped up the regular season on Saturday at the Seminole Sand Volleyball Complex in familiar fashion.
The Seminoles dominated the competition.
FSU picked up a pair of 5-0 victories, dropping just one set, over UAB and FAU to finish 15-0 in dual matches in 2012.
The Garnet and Gold have one event left in the inaugural collegiate season next weekend - the first-ever Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Saturday's doubleheader was a great tune-up for the Noles.
"We finally figured out our strongest lineup, and the team played fantastic today," head coach Danalee Corso said. "It's a great way to walk into the national championships. We're ready as long as everybody can stay healthy. I think we'll be even better after a few days of practice next week.
Before the match, Florida State honored seniors Jekaterina Stepanova and Visnja Djurdjevic and graduate student Caitlin Haworth, who will cap their careers as Seminoles in Gulf Shores.
"Kate, Visnja and Caitlin all played awesome today," Corso said. "They all bring so much maturity to our matches and our team as a whole. It will be hard to fill their shoes. That's how it goes. Hopefully our younger players will step it up."
Stepanova teamed with freshman Jace Pardon at the No. 2 spot to easily pick up wins over UAB (21-13, 21-10) and FAU (21-10, 21-11). The pair is the No. 5 seed in the pairs portion of the national championship and has a sterling 37-6 record on the season, including a 13-0 mark in duals.
"It was exciting, but it also was bittersweet because it was my last match as a Seminole at home," Stepanova said. "It was good to pick up a couple of victories before Nationals." Djurdjevic paired with freshman Stephanie Pellitteri for the first time this season, and the duo grabbed straight set victories versus the Blazers (21-12, 21-7) and Owls (21-10, 21-10) on Court 3. Djurdjevic went 15-0 in dual matches this season.
Haworth and her partner, senior Mallory Kiley (who is expected to compete next year as a graduate student), may have been the competition's most dominant duo on Court 4, handling UAB's Ally Slaughter and Kate Morrell (21-10, 21-12) before annihilating FAU's Lauren Jones and Chandler Hatton (21-6, 21-12).
"Today was extremely exciting," Haworth said. "Mallory and I came ready to play. We took charge right away. This was my last home game at FSU and it was exciting to win our matches decisively."
Florida State's No. 1 pair of junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs improved to 45-6-1 on the season with victories over UAB's top tandem of Heather Thomas and Kirsten Gallagher (21-9, 21-10) and FAU's No. 1 team of Joanne Marras Tate and Alessia Pizzocheri (21-13, 21-12).
The only set FSU dropped on the day came on Court 5 against UAB. Junior Fatma Yilidirm and Jeassica McGregor lost the second set to the Blazers' Michele Simmons and Becca Howard, but won the match - 21-16, 17-21, 15-4. The FSU duo followed that match by hammering FAU's fifth squad, 21-4, 21-17.
In Saturday's third match, UAB edged FAU, 3-2, as the game came down to the third set on Court 2.
The Seminoles travel to Gulf Shores on Wednesday and will begin competition on Friday with pool play for the 16-team pairs championship. In addition to Stepanova and Pardon competing in that portion of the weekend, Newgard and Tiegs are the favorites, earning the one-seed.
The team championship will be decided by a double-elimination bracket on Saturday. Long Beach State, Pepperdine and College of Charleston will also be battling for the team title.
The national championships wrap up next Sunday, April 29, with pairs championship bracket.

Seminoles Build Momentum with Undefeated Day 1 at Nationals.
Florida State faces Long Beach State at Noon CT to start the team championship Saturday.
GULF SHORES, AL - At Thursday's practice Florida State sand volleyball head coach Danalee Corso said great performances from her top two pairs on the first day of the Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship would be key to provide the Seminoles with momentum heading into Saturday's team championship.
The Garnet and Gold got just that out of the tandems of junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs, and senior Jekaterina Stepanova and freshman Jace Pardon on Friday on the beaches of Gulf Shores, Ala.
The Noles went a perfect 6-0 and won a trio of three-set battles during pool play of the 16-team pairs portion of the weekend. Stepanova and Pardon captured the No. 3 seed in Sunday's pairs championship by winning Pool D. Tiegs and Newgard grabbed the No. 4 seed by winning Pool A, including capturing the day's final match, an epic three-setter over Hawaii's No. 1 tandem of Jane Croson and Ashley Lee.
Most importantly, the exciting and successful first day will give FSU a strong push into the four-team double-elimination team championship that begins Saturday at 11 a.m. CT when first-seed Pepperdine takes on fourth-seed College of Charleston. The second-seeded Seminoles will face third-seed Long Beach State at 12 p.m. CT.
"This will give us momentum, but those two teams will be a little tired," Corso said. "Thankfully, we are very well conditioned. The goal is to become the first-ever collegiate sand volleyball national champions tomorrow."
Tiegs and Newgard dropped their first set to of the day to Long Beach State's Haleigh Hampton and Chelsea Cabrajac, 21-19, before cruising in the next two sets, 21-17, 15-8, to win. The Nole pair then blew past College of Charleston's Emily Shelton and Kelly Kolich, 21-10, 21-17.
Tiegs and Newgard had been looking to gain revenge against Croson and Lee since the Rainbow Wahine tandem downed the Seminole duo in three sets at the UNF Invitational pairs final on April 1.
Friday's match was another three-setter. After Tiegs and Newgard handedly grabbed the first set, 21-18, Croson and Lee outlasted the Garnet and Gold pair, 30-28, in set two. Trailing 13-9 in the final set, the FSU tandem dug deep, fought back to snag an emotional 16-14 to keep FSU undefeated on the day.
"That was a phenomenal win," Tiegs said. "We'd been gunning for them, and they had been gunning for us. We got our revenge and finally beat them. We started off a little slow, but that happens. We definitely picked it up for sure as soon as we got our momentum going. It's great to go 3-0 in our pool."
Pardon and Stepanova also had an impressive three-set victory over Hawaii of their own in their second match of the day. After routing UNF's Dagnija Medina and Emily Strack, 21-10, 21-17, the Seminole pair dropped its first set to the Rainbow Wahine team of Emily Hartong and Elizabeth Stoltzman, 21-19, but rallied to take the second set 21-14. The FSU tandem was down 13-11 in the third set, before scoring four straight points to win the match.
Pardon and Stepanova ended their day with a straight-set 21-14, 21-17 victory over Southern California's Geena Urango and Sara Shaw.
"Today was amazing," Corso said. "Brittany and Aurora were spectacular. They're not the most physical team here, but they have so many tools in their repertoire. They used every one today. They've won three of five tournaments this season. To win major events is a skill in itself. They have that. They proved today they are mature players, and so did Jace and Kate today."
Pepperdine's top two teams won Pools B and C without dropping a set to grab the first two seeds of Sunday's pairs tournament.
The Seminole teams will be on opposite ends of the pairs bracket and wouldn't meet until the finals.
Also competing for the Noles on Saturday will be the No. 3 team of senior Mallory Kiley and graduate student Caitlin Haworth, the No. 4 duo of senior Visnja Djurdjevic and freshman Stephanie Pellitteri, and the No. 5 squad of junior Fatma Yildirm and sophomore Jeassica McGregor.

Florida State Sand Volleyball Finishes Third at National Championships.
FSU's top two tandems can still win a national title in the pairs championship Sunday.
GULF SHORES, AL - The Florida State sand volleyball team's quest to become the first collegiate sand volleyball champion came up short on Saturday at the hands of Long Beach State, as the Seminoles finished third on the beaches of Gulf Shores, Ala. at the inaugural Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships.
FSU dropped a pair of matches, 4-1 in the first round and 3-2 in the semifinals, to the 49ers. The Garnet & Gold downed College of Charleston 4-1 in the quarterfinals.
The Seminoles wrap up the season with a 16-2 dual match record.
FSU's top two tandems of junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs and senior Jekaterina Stepanova and freshman Jace Pardon give Florida State another shot at a national championship in Sundays' 16-team single-elimination pairs tournament.
"I had very high expectations this season and the team exceeded them in terms of how hard they worked and how much they improved," Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. "I knew these indoor players from the West Coast would close the gap on us, they just needed time in the sand. I don't think the team was expecting Long Beach State to improve this much. Congratulations to Long Beach and Pepperdine. I still think we've had a successful season. I definitely plan on challenging this team more next year so we are prepared for this national championship."
Stepanova and Pardon captured the third seed, while Tiegs and Newgard snagged the fourth seed in the pairs tournament. Both duos will play at 8 a.m. CT on Sunday with first round matches against 13-seed Kelly Kolich and Emily Shelton of College of Charleston and 14-seed Dagnija Medina and Emily Strack of UNF, respectively. The quarterfinals matches will be at 9 a.m., the semifinals will start at 11 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., and the championship will start at 1:30 p.m. All times are Eastern.
"There are a lot of good teams out here, so it's not going to be easy by any means," Corso said. "It's definitely possible to win. Our top two teams are very strong."
After Pepperdine defeated Long Beach State to capture the first-ever sand national title, the inaugural 10-member class of All-Americans were announced, featuring FSU's Stepanova, Newgard and Tiegs.
Stepanova and Pardon were absolutely dominant during Saturday's team competition, winning all three of their matches in two sets. The pair will be among the favorites for Sunday's pair championship.
The Seminoles got off to a slow start in their opening round match against Long Beach State, losing the first set on three of five courts. Stepanova and Pardon routed Chelsea Cabrajac and Halie Hampton, 21-17, 21-13. Newgard and Tiegs won the first set against Caitlin Ledoux and Tara Roenicke but dropped the second set before forfeiting in the third to conserve energy after FSU's third through fifth teams all lost in two sets.
The Noles took out their frustration following their first dual loss of the season on the College Charleston, winning easily on four courts, before forfeiting on court four to rest up for a rematch with Long Beach State.
Again, the 49ers were too much for the Seminoles in the semifinals match. Stepanova and Pardon smoked Cabrajac and Hampton for a second time, but the Noles' Nos. 3 through 5 teams couldn't win a set, despite Visnja Djurdjevic and Stephanie Pellitteri and Sarah Wickstrom and Fatma Yildirm leading in both sets.

Pardon and Stepanova advance to the semifinals in the national pairs tournament.
GULF SHORES, AL - The Florida State sand volleyball team's inaugural season ended in the semifinals of the National Championships pairs tournament on Sunday on the beaches of Gulf Shores, Ala.
Senior Jekaterina Stepanova and freshman Jace Pardon lost in a hard-fought semifinal to Long Beach State's Caitlin Ledoux and Tara Roenicke, 21-19, 17-21, 15-8.
That same 49ers' team knocked junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs out in the semifinals, 21-17, 21-16, earlier in the day.
The Seminoles wrap up the season with a 16-2 final record and a third-place team national championship finish on Saturday. Stepanova, Tiegs and Newgard all captured All-America awards, as well.
"Long Beach is a strong team," FSU head coach Danalee Corso said after the semifinals. "I think if we could've won that first set, it would've been a different match. It was a great match, and this weekend was a great tournament. I'm really proud of Jace and Kate, and I'm really proud of the whole team.
"I think it was great for everyone to be here. I talked about it the whole year - that these West Coast teams with the indoor players would get better as they learned how to play in the sand."
Stepanova and Pardon fought back with a dominant second set against 49ers that included back-to-back points from the 6-2 Riga, Lativia, native who scored a point on a back dump before an ace gave the Noles an early 8-4 lead that set the tone for the rest of the set.
Roenicke and Ledoux had just a little more left in the tank to advance to the finals in the third set, however.
"Long Beach State deserves to be in the final," Stepanova said. "It was a close game, and we tasted the final so it's frustrating. We were so close, so it's kind of sad. Personally, I've had a great career at Florida State. This weekend was a great way to close out my senior season."
After winning set one, 21-17, Stepanova and Pardon were down 18-14 in the second set of the quarterfinals to USC's Kirby Burnham and Kelly Irvin before rallying to defeat the Trojan duo, 23-21, and advance to the semifinals. Stepanova had a powerful block to put the Seminoles ahead on a point before the Trojans hit the ball into the net to give the Garnet and Gold duo the set and the match.
The duo also routed UNF's Dagnija Medina and Emily Strack in the opening round 21-14, 21-13.
Newgard and Tiegs defeated College of Charleston's Emily Shelton and Kelly Kolich, 21-15, 21-16 in the first round.
