Walk-off Wins On Opening Day Over UNC And No. 1 Alabama.
The No. 8 Seminoles start the JoAnne Graf Classic with extra-inning wins over North
Carolina and No. 1 Alabama.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Two games, two exciting finishes on Opening Day for the Seminoles as No. 8 Florida State (2-0) opened the 2020 JoAnne Graf Classic with a pair of wins over RV North Carolina (0-2) and No. 1 Alabama (1-1) on Friday afternoon.
Freshman Kiersten Landers placed an RBI bunt single in the bottom of the eighth to carry the Noles over the Tar Heels, 2-1, in game number one, while a grand slam from Dani Morgan capped a five-run comeback in the bottom of the seventh against the Crimson Tide, allowing Elizabeth Mason to drive home Landers for the winning run in the eighth for the 8-7 victory.
Landers finished the day 6-for-9 from the plate with a double, three RBI and three runs scored as the redshirt freshman made her collegiate debut on Friday. Senior Cassidy Davis earned the win in relief in both games as she combined for 3.0 innings without allowing a hit and posting five total strikeouts.
"It was definitely exciting," said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. "And I think that's what we are all about, building our journey and seeing what we are as a team. A lot of people came up in a lot of different positions and Cassidy Davis was huge coming in to close out the games. It is just day one/game two, but what a way to start off. It is a long journey ahead for us. The grit that the team had tonight is a maturity piece, and we are a very young team, so if they already have that, then this season could be really exciting for us."
Game 1: No. 8 Florida State 2, RV North Carolina 1 (8 innings)
Landers got
things started as she lined a double into the left field corner to begin the top of the first, and later came in to score on an RBI single by Mason as the Seminoles took a 1-0 lead.
Landers also showed off her short game in the third inning, dropping a perfect bunt in front of the plate for a single.
Caylan Arnold also shined early in her FSU debut, as the senior transfer struck out the first four batters she faced and retired nine Tar Heels in a row to start the game, before Destiny Middleton reached on an error to begin the top of the fourth inning. A wild pitch moved the UNC runner to third and an RBI single by Kristina Burkhardt tied the game at 1-1.
Both offenses struggled in the middle innings as the teams combined for just two baserunners from the next 22 batters spanning from the fourth until the top of the seventh.
Florida State got the winning run on base to begin the bottom of the seventh as Sydney Sherrill worked back from a 1-2 count to draw a leadoff walk, but a groundout and a pair of strikeouts sent the season opener to extra innings.
UNC's Abby Settlemyre led off the top of the eighth inning with a single through the right side and moved up to second base with one out on a stolen base. Davis entered the circle to relieve Arnold and retired the next two batters to end the threat.
Sophomore Josie Muffley started the FSU half of the eighth inning with a ground ball to third base that was thrown wide of the bag at first, allowing Muffley to advance to second. A groundout moved Muffley to third with two outs and Landers drove in the winning run with a bunt single in front of the plate.
Arnold allowed just four hits over 7.1 innings with one unearned run, zero walks and seven strikeouts in the no decision. Davis (1-0) picked up the win in relief, retiring both batters she faced, including a strikeout.

Game 2: No. 8 Florida State 8, No. 1 Alabama 7
Alabama took advantage of
multiple FSU miscues to stake a 3-0 lead after the top of the first. Skylar Wallace was hit by the first pitch of the game from FSU's Kathryn Sandercock, and Alexis Mack followed with an infield
single. A groundout moved the runners to second and third and a wild pitch allowed the first run to score. After a strikeout, the inning continued on an FSU throwing error and KB Sides drove in
another Alabama run with an RBI single to make it 3-0 Tide.
Alabama added two more in the top of the third inning on a two-run home run by Taylor Clark to push out to a 5-0 lead.
Alabama starting pitcher Montana Fouts began by retiring six of the first seven batters she faced, before Chloe Culp started the bottom of the third by reaching on a Crimson Tide throwing error. Culp moved to third base on a groundout and scored on an infield RBI single by Landers to cut the lead to 5-1.
Freshman Brianna Enter came in to pitch to begin the top of the fourth inning for Florida State, ending Sandercock's day in the circle. A leadoff walk moved to third on a pair of groundouts and scored on an RBI infield single by Alexis Mack. Alabama added another run in the top of the fifth after Savannah Woodward lined an RBI double to left center to make it 7-1.
The Seminoles managed just one baserunner over a span of 3.2 innings as Fouts, a NFCA Second Team All-American in 2019 as a freshman, stymied the Florida State offense.
The Noles broke through with another run in the bottom of the sixth as Mason drew a walk and came in to score on an RBI double by Davis, cutting the lead to 7-2.
Fouts initally left the game after 6.0 innings pitched, allowing just two runs, one earned, on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts, as Krystal Goodman entered to pitch the seventh for the Crimson Tide.
Freshman Devyn Flaherty led off the frame with a single up the middle and an Alabama error off the bat of Muffley, along with a walk to Morgan Noah, loaded the bases with nobody out. Landers drove in a run on an infield RBI single, prompting Alabama to bring Fouts back into the game. Morgan fouled off four pitches and crushed a grand slam to left to tie the game at 7-7.
The inning continued on a walk by Mason with one out, and after she stole second, Davis was intentionally walked. Kaia LoPreste grounded out, moving the runners to second and third with two away. An intentional walk to Flaherty reloaded the bases and Muffley nearly beat out a ground ball to short, but was retired to end the inning and send the game to extras.
An FSU error and a sacrifice bunt gave Alabama a runner on second with one away in the top of the eighth, but a nice play by Sherrill on a ground ball at third and a strikeout from Davis ended the inning.
Noah opened the bottom of the eighth with a single to left, ending Fouts' day in the circle. Lexi Kilfoyl, winning pitcher in Alabama's game against UNC earlier in the day, entered and Landers put down a bunt single in front of the plate. Morgan hit a sharp ground ball to third, which turned into a double play, leaving Landers at second. After Sherrill was intentionally walked, Mason lined a single through the right side, scoring Landers from second to secure the 8-7 victory.
The Seminoles recorded three double plays against Alabama on Friday night, doubling off runners at second on line drives to Landers and Morgan, along with a strikeout/caught stealing in the sixth inning involving Davis and LoPreste.
Sandercock gave up five runs, three earned, on four hits with one walk and one strikeout over 3.0 innings and did not factor in the decision. Enter tossed 2.2 innings of relief, surrendering two runs on three hits with three walks and a strikeout. Davis closed out the game, tossing 2.1 innings without allowing a hit, issuing just one walk and posting four strikeouts in the relief win.

No. 8 FSU Posts Run-Rule Wins Over No. 1 Alabama & Detroit Mercy.
The Seminoles combined for 30 runs on Saturday with a 22-0 win over the Titans
and a 8-0 victory versus the Crimson Tide.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - While Friday's games each lasted eight innings, the Seminoles only needed five per game on Saturday as No. 8 Florida State (4-0) posted run-rule victories over Detroit Mercy (0-2) and No. 1 Alabama (1-2) in the second day of the JoAnne Graf Classic. The Noles defeated the Titans by a score of 22-0, before blanking the Crimson Tide, 8-0.
The 22 runs against Detroit Mercy set a school record in run scored, surpassing the 20 runs that Florida State plated against Bethune-Cookman on February 10, 2013.
"We knew that we had a special group this year, and that we were going to be young and talented, so it's been more about opportunities to play and develop kids in certain situations," said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. "Very proud of that, and it is day by day right now. It is so early in the season, and obviously you are happy about being 4-0, and being excited for the kids. But we have a long way to go and need to keep growing. But it is really cool to see how mature we are as a young team."
Game 1: No. 8 Florida State 22, Detroit Mercy 0 (5 innings)
The Seminoles jumped out to
an early 13-0 lead against Detroit Mercy in the first inning and 11 of the 13 runs were unearned as the Titans committed three errors in the frame. Senior Anna Shelnutt highlighted the offense with a
three-run home run and was also hit by a pitch. Dani Morgan drove in an RBI in each of her at-bats in the inning, bringing home Sydney Sherrill on a single and also scoring Elizabeth Mason on a
sacrifice fly. Cassidy Davis also recorded an RBI in each of her plate appearances, reaching on an error with the bases loaded and also drawing a bases-loaded walk. Freshman Chloe Culp lined a two-run
single to right field and redshirt freshman Kiersten Landers followed with a two-RBI single of her own.
Sherrill opened the FSU third inning with a hit-by-pitch and quickly scored on an RBI triple by Devyn Flaherty. Morgan drove in another run with an RBI single up the middle and was pinch-run for by Kaley Mudge. Josie Muffley walked and Culp brought in Mudge with an RBI single to left. Landers closed out the scoring with a single up the middle as the Seminoles extended their lead to 17-0.
Extra-base hits were on the menu for Florida State in the bottom of the fourth as Sherrill and Flaherty hit consecutive solo home runs, while Mudge and Kaia LoPreste followed with back-to-back doubles. Culp gave the Seminoles a school record in runs scored with her third hit of the game, a two-run home run to center to make it 22-0 Florida State.
Sophomore Kathryn Sandercock (1-0) got the start in the circle for the Seminoles and was perfect in her 3.0-inning appearance with a pair of strikeouts. She finished with just 26 pitches in the win, including a four-pitch inning in the second.
Bianca Cruz pitched 1.1 innings of relief in her collegiate debut, striking out two while allowing one it. Kara Bilodeau closed out the game for the Noles, retiring each of the two batters she faced.

Lonni Alameda Earns Career Win No. 700.
No. 8 Florida State closed out the JoAnne Graf Classic with a 12-0 win over Detroit Mercy.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - In her 17th season as a head coach, and 12th at the helm of Florida State, Lonni Alameda earned her 700th career win on Sunday with a 12-0 win over Detroit Mercy (0-4) in the final game of the 2020 JoAnne Graf Classic. The No. 8 Seminoles (5-0) defeated the Titans by a score of 12-0, in five innings. Alameda now holds a career mark of 700-318-2 (.687 winning percentage), with a 543-160-1 record (.772) at FSU.
"I had no idea about it," said Alameda. "I don't really pay attention to some of those things, but when I saw the water bucket coming, I figured something was going on.
"It was a great surprise and a special weekend with this team. When you reflect on a milestone like this, you think about how many people have been a part of this program, from players to staff, and I'm really lucky to be able to coach."
Brianna Enter made her first career start for Florida State on Sunday and she allowed a double and a single to the first two batters she faced. The freshman settled in and recorded consecutive strikeouts and induced a pop out to keep the Titans off the board.
Devyn Flaherty opened the FSU second inning with her second triple of the season and scored on an RBI single by Chloe Culp. A fielder's choice by Josie Muffley and a walk to Morgan Noah loaded the bases with nobody out. An RBI single by Kaia LoPreste and an RBI groundout by Kiersten Landers made it 3-0 Florida State.
A double by Sydney Sherrill and a walk to Cassidy Davis allowed Flaherty to record her second extra-base hit of the inning, launching a three-run HR off the scoreboard in right center to make it 8-0 Florida State.
The Noles added four more in the bottom of the fourth as Landers put down a bunt single to lead off the inning. Sherrill's second double of the day brought her in to score and moved Sherrill into sole possession of fourth place on the FSU career list with 49 doubles. Leslie Farris pinch ran at second for Sherrill and scored on an RBI triple by Kaley Mudge. Culp closed out the scoring with a two-run home run to left for the 12-0 final score.
Kathryn Sandercock (1-0) entered to pitch the third inning and retired six of the seven batters she faced. Bianca Cruz faced two batters in the fifth inning and struck out both of them, while Kara Bilodeau closed out the game by getting the batter to pop out.

Seminoles Top Florida A&M, 10-2.
Freshman Chloe Culp led Florida State with four RBI in the win on Wednesday night.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - There was production up and down the lineup on Wednesday night for the Seminoles as No. 5 Florida State (6-0) defeated Florida A&M (0-5) by a score of 10-2, in five innings. Ten different FSU batters had at least one hit, run scored or RBI on the evening, led by freshman Chloe Culp, who finished 2-for-2 with a triple, a home run and four RBI.
Prior to the game, FSU head coach Lonni Alameda and former FSU head coach JoAnne Graf led a presentation to honor the career of Florida A&M head coach Veronica Wiggins, who will be retiring after the 2020 season.
"What a special night to celebrate and honor a person that means so much to the game of softball and to Tallahassee," said Alameda. "Coach Wiggins welcomed me with open arms when I came here and has been so involved with the NCAA and our coaches association, so it is nice to honor someone like that. Some of my most special moments over the years with her haven't even been on the field, but when we run into each other at Publix and we'll just sit in the aisle and talk softball. I just really appreciate that and love Tallahassee for that. It is a very small-town feel, but with big-time athletics on both sides for Florida State and FAMU."
Florida A&M got runners on the corners with two away in the top of the first on an FSU error and a single, but Kara Bilodeau got out of the jam with a groundout to end the inning.
Kiersten Landers began the FSU first inning with an infield single and quickly stole second base. After a walk to Sydney Sherrill, her eighth of the season, Elizabeth Mason launched a home run off the scoreboard in right center to put the Seminoles in front, 3-0.
After a 1-2-3 second inning from Bilodeau, Florida State added a pair of runs in the second inning to push its lead out to 5-0. Freshman Devyn Flaherty led off with a single up the middle, stole second and came in to score on an RBI triple by fellow freshman, Chloe Culp. Culp later scored on a wild pitch for her sixth run scored of the season.
Kathryn Sandercock entered to pitch the third inning for Florida State and retired the Rattlers in order, while in the bottom of the inning, the Seminoles scored four more runs for a 9-0 lead. Mason opened the inning with a walk and stole second, while Anna Shelnutt followed with a walk and was pinch-run for by Maegan Tomlinson. Culp battled an eight-pitch at bat and finished it with a home run to center, her third HR of the season. Josie Muffley walked and was replaced by Morgan Noah, who quickly stole second base and later scored on an RBI single by Dani Morgan.
The Rattlers scored an unearned run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 9-1. An FSU error with two outs allowed Kyaira Jones to reach base and she scored on a ball in the left-center gap by Seriah Brokenborough.
Kaia LoPreste reached on a two-out error by Florida A&M in the bottom of the fourth and scored on a pinch-hit RBI triple by Savannah Parker as the sophomore hit it off the top of the wall in center to extend FSU's advantage to 10-1.
A single, a walk and an RBI double allowed Florida A&M to add another run in the top of the fifth, but Cassidy Davis retired the final batter with a strikeout to close out the game, 10-2.
Sandercock (3-0) picked up the win after 2.0 innings of relief, giving up an unearned run on one hit. Bilodeau struck out two and allowed one hit in her 2.0-inning start, while Bianca Cruz gave up a run and a hit in 0.2 innings of relief.

Seminoles Shutout By No. 1 Washington, 7-0.
No. 5 Florida State dropped its first game of the 2020 St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational.
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Missed opportunities plagued the Seminoles on Friday as No. 5 Florida State (6-1) was defeated by No. 1 Washington (7-1) by a score of 7-0 in FSU's first game at the 2020 St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational. The Noles had baserunners in all seven innings, including the leadoff batter in five of the seven innings, but couldn't take advantage as FSU batted a combined 1-for-19 (.053) with runners on base.
"That's why we come down to a tournament like this, is to play against quality opponents," said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. "There are winners and learners, and there were a lot of learning moments this afternoon. We'll go back to the hotel, regroup and focus on Minnesota tonight."
The Seminoles got a pair of runners in scoring position in the first inning, but couldn't push across a run in the opening frame. Dani Morgan singled through the left side, stole second and Sydney Sherrill followed with a walk. Both runners moved up a base as Elizabeth Mason was retired on a fly out to left. Morgan broke for home as a pitch by Washington's Kelley Lynch got by the catcher, but the backstop was close enough that the ball bounced back to the catcher and Lynch was able to tag Morgan out to end the inning.
FSU starting pitcher Caylan Arnold issued a walk to start the bottom of the first inning, but a line drive to third base was caught by Sherrill to start a double play. Arnold retired the next batter on a fly out to end the inning.
Washington took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a three-run home run by Kelley Lynch. The Huskies got a pair of runners on base with a two-out single and a hit-by-pitch, and Lynch hit her first HR of the season to left to put Washington in front.
Josie Muffley led off the top of the third with a double to center and Kiersten Landers followed with an infield single. After Landers stole second, Morgan drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out. The Noles couldn't push a run across as the next three batters were retired on a pop out and a pair of strikeouts.
Washington added another run in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by SilentRain Espinoza to make it 4-0 Huskies.
Kara Bilodeau entered to pitch for the Noles in the bottom of the fifth inning and Washington added another run after a one-out triple to right and an RBI sacrifice bunt, extending its lead to 5-0.
Cassidy Davis began the FSU sixth inning with a walk and was pinch-run for by Kaley Mudge at first. Mudge stole second and Devyn Flaherty followed with a one-out walk. Washington brought in Gabbie Plain to pitch and she ended the inning with a pair of strikeouts.
Washington added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth after Bianca Cruz allowed all three batters she faced to reach on a pair of walks and a single. Brianna Enter came in to pitch for FSU and allowed a run to score on a bases-loaded walk and another after an FSU fielding error to make it 7-0 Washington.
Landers led off the seventh with an infield single and Sherrill reached on a Washington error, but a strikeout by Plain, her third of the game, secured the win for the Huskies.
Arnold (1-1) gave up four runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts in the loss, while Bilodeau allowed one run on two hits in her 1.0 inning of relief.

No. 5 FSU Walked Off By No. 13 Minnesota.
The Seminoles fall to the Gophers, 7-6, as Minnesota scores twice in the bottom of the seventh.
CLEARWATER, Fla. - In a back and forth battle that lasted nearly three hours, No. 5 Florida State (6-2) came up on the short end as No. 13 Minnesota (4-3) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 7-6 victory. Minnesota posted an early 2-0 lead and the Seminoles went in front 6-2, before the Gophers scored the final five runs of the game.
"Tough battle tonight, but I loved the fight from the kids," said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. "We are going to continue to learn and grow as a team and get after Northwestern tomorrow."
Both offenses were quiet until Minnesota led off the bottom of the second with a double by Emily Hansen and Sydney Strelow made it 2-0 Gophers with a home run to center.
The Seminoles cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth as Elizabeth Mason and Cassidy Davis hit back-to-back singles and Devyn Flaherty put the Noles on the board with a two-out RBI single to left field.
Florida State took the lead in the top of the fifth, plating five runs to move in front 6-2. Josie Muffley started the inning with a walk and Kiersten Landers followed with an infield single. Sydney Sherrill tied the game with an RBI single up the middle and Mason fouled off a pair of two-strike pitches before singling up the middle to put the Noles up 4-2. After a walk by Kaley Mudge, Anna Shelnutt lined a two-run double into the gap in right center for a 6-2 Seminole lead.
Minnesota got three runs back in the bottom of the fifth after a leadoff double, a hit-by-pitch and a two-run double by Carlie Brandt. Following an infield single and an FSU error that allowed another Gopher run to score, Brianna Enter came in to replace Kathryn Sandercock in the circle. She issued a walk to the first batter she faced, but ended the inning with a pair of strikeouts as FSU held a 6-5 lead after five full innings.
Enter added two more strikeouts in a scoreless sixth inning and was replaced in the circle after allowing a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh. An RBI triple tied the game at 6-6, and Davis induced a pair of groundballs to retire Minnesota runners at the plate. Strelow lined a 1-2 pitch into right field for an RBI single to win the game.
Sandercock gave up five runs, four earned, over 4.1 innings with six hits, zero walks and five strikeouts, including striking out the side in the fourth inning. Enter had four strikeouts in 1.2 innings of relief, allowing one run and one hit, while Davis gave up a run on two hits with a walk in 0.2 innings.

No. 5 Seminoles Fall To No. 23 Northwestern.
Florida State is defeated by the Wildcats, 6-2.
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Playing a ranked team for the fifth time in the first nine games of the season, No. 5 Florida State (6-3) was defeated by No. 23 Northwestern (4-4) by a score of 6-2 on Saturday at the 2020 St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational.
"Saw some good things from today, though definitely not the outcome we were looking for, but we are going to continue to grow," said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. "We came to this tournament, and purposely schedule difficult games in February, to get challenged. It is important for us to play some elite level softball and to learn how to play on the road in different conditions and situations. Learning to play consistently is a key that we are trying to focus on as a coaching staff. That's what this tournament does so well, is challenge you from the first inning to the seventh inning. We'll take the things we did well and work on the things we can do better and continue to attack pitch-by-pitch tomorrow."
Offense was at a premium in the early going as the two teams combined for four total hits through the first four innings. The Seminoles struck first against the Wildcats as Cassidy Davis hit a solo home run to center in the bottom of the second inning to put FSU in front, 1-0.
FSU added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning, after Elizabeth Mason drew a walk and a single by Dani Morgan was misplayed by the NU centerfielder, which allowed Mason to score from first base and extend the FSU lead to 2-0.
Northwestern got a run back in the top of the fifth as Kenna Wilkey hit a solo home run to center to lead off the inning. A double by Gracie Huff was erased by Kaia LoPreste, as the freshman retired Huff at third base on a steal attempt to keep FSU in front, 2-1.
Brianna Enter started the top of the sixth in the circle for the Seminoles and faced just two batters, hitting one and walking another, before Kathryn Sandercock entered in relief. A bunt single by the Wildcats loaded the bases and a two-run single by Morgan Newport gave Northwestern a 3-2 lead. Sandercock retired the next two batters with a strikeout, but a single and double brought in three more runs for Northwestern to make it 6-2 Wildcats.
Arnold finished with 5.0 innings pitched, giving up one run on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts in the no decision. Sandercock tossed 1.2 innings of relief for the Seminoles and allowed three runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Kara Bilodeau retired the only batter she faced with a pop out.

Seminoles Top Liberty On Sunday.
Florida State posted a 7-1 win over the Flames at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational.
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Led by Cassidy Davis, who went 3-for-4 from the plate with a double, a home run and three RBI, No. 5 Florida State (7-3) posted a 7-1 victory over Liberty (1-9) on Sunday afternoon at the 2020 St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational.
"Nice win today and glad of how we bounced back from Friday and Saturday," said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. "Caylan pitched a great game for us and our defense played outstanding behind her as well. Cass Davis was swinging it well today and helped sparked the offense. Pleased with the win and looking forward to another challenge tonight against UCLA."
Florida State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning as Davis hit her third home run of the season to right, scoring Sydney Sherrill who reached on a walk. Dani Morgan followed with a bunt single, stole second and a fielding error off the bat of Devyn Flaherty put runners on the corners with two outs. Flaherty stole second and Morgan Noah brought in a run with an infield single. Noah stole second, and Liberty tried to pickoff Flaherty at third, but the throw went into left field which allowed Flaherty to score. Josie Muffley drew a walk and stole second, but ended up being left on base.
Liberty had a leadoff double in the top of the second, but a line drive to Noah started a 4-6 double play. The Flames got runners to second and third after a single, an FSU error and a wild pitch, but a pop out to second kept Liberty off the board.
Kiersten Landers led off the FSU second inning with a triple to left field and scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Sherrill as the throw home was not in time, extending the FSU lead to 5-0.
The Flames got a run back in the top of the fourth, as Emily Sweat hit a solo home run to center to cut the FSU lead to 5-1.
Florida State added two more in the bottom of the fourth inning as Sherrill began the frame with a single to center. Chloe Culp followed with a walk and Davis drove in a run with an RBI single to center. A wild pitch moved both runners to second and third, while a sacrifice fly from Morgan brought in another run to make it 7-1 Noles.
Caylan Arnold (2-1) tossed a complete-game victory, allowing just one run on five hits with zero walks and two strikeouts.

No. 5 FSU Drops Sunday Finale To No. 2 UCLA.
The Seminoles wrap up the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational with a 3-2 loss to the
Bruins.
CLEARWATER, Fla. - A close, back-and-forth battle between two Top-5 teams was everything as advertised on Sunday night, as No. 5 Florida State (7-4) was narrowly defeated by No. 2 UCLA (11-0) by a score of 3-2 in front of nearly 1,500 fans at the final game of the 2020 St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational.
The Noles led 2-1 in the top of the seventh inning before the Bruins took the lead on a two-out, two-run double by Aaliyah Jordan which went off the glove of Kaley Mudge as she ran into the wall in left field. The Seminoles had the game-tying run on base in the bottom of the inning, but couldn't bring them in.
"It was a hard-fought battle tonight and I am really proud of the team," said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. "This was a very tough tournament and we are getting a lot out of it and growing as a team. Dani had a great day with some gritty at bats, Flaherty coming through as well. It was great to see the pitchers get out there and execute, and Kat shut them down through the middle innings. It was a good game and now we need to get on the road, get some rest and make some adjustments for our next opportunity."
The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a pair of doubles by Jenavee Peres and Alyssa Garcia. FSU starting pitcher Brianna Enter struck out the next batter and got out of the inning with a groundout to second base.
Dani Morgan helped spark the FSU offense in the second inning as the Noles tied the game at 1-1. The senior battled a 12-pitch at-bat and capped it off with a single to left, and the throw in by the UCLA left fielder was off target, allowing Morgan to take second on the play. Devyn Flaherty followed with an RBI single up the middle to tie things up after two full innings.
UCLA led off the top of the third inning with a single, ending Enter's time in the circle as Kathryn Sandercock took over as the FSU pitcher. After another single, a ball back up the middle tipped off the edge of Sandercock's glove and went to Morgan Noah at second base, who fired home as the UCLA runner tried to score from second on the play for the first out of the inning. Sandercock got out of the inning with a pair of groundouts to third base.
Sydney Sherrill put the Noles in front in the bottom of the third inning, as her solo home run to right field gave FSU a 2-1 lead. It marked the first time that UCLA has trailed during the 2020 season. Cassidy Davis followed with a double to right center, but was left stranded.
Sandercock was in control through the middle of the game, retiring 12 of 13 batters from the third to the sixth inning.
The Bruins led off the top of the seventh with double to right field by Seneca Curo, and she was bunted over to third with a sacrifice bunt. A groundout to shortstop gave UCLA its last chance, before Jordan's two-run double.
Josie Muffley led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single up the middle, but would not advance beyond first base as the next three batters were all retired to end the game.
Sandercock (3-1) took the loss, giving up two runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout. Brianna Enter tossed 2.0 innings in her second career start, scattering five hits and one run with zero walks and a strikeout.

Caylan pitched really well against Baylor in the morning, but we weren't take advantage of our opportunities offensively. Excited to come back out tomorrow and make some adjustments.
Game 1: No. 19 Baylor 2, No. 8 Florida State 1
Baylor opened the scoring
in the top of the first as a walk and a double put runners on second and third with one out for the Bears. A sacrifice fly to right field by Josie Bower gave Baylor an early 1-0 lead.
The Bears added another run in the top of the third inning as a leadoff walk by Alyssa Avalos and a two-out double by Aliyah Pritchett made it 2-0.
Florida State had runners on base in each of the first four innings on singles by Kiersten Landers, Cassidy Davis, Sydney Sherrill and Elizabeth Mason, along with walks by Devyn Flaherty and Dani Morgan, but the Noles were unable to get beyond second base until the bottom of the fifth inning.
Landers reached on a Baylor fielding error with one out in the fifth and stole second base for her sixth SB of the season. Sherrill lined an RBI double to left center to cut the BU lead to 2-1. It marked her 50th career double, which moved her into a tie with Jessica van der Linden (2001-04) for third-most in FSU history.
Six of the final seven FSU batters were retired as the Seminole comeback came up short.
Caylan Arnold (2-2) pitched well, despite taking the loss on Friday. The senior allowed two runs on five hits with just two walks and a season-high 11 strikeouts. It marked the third-most strikeouts in her career, trailing a pair of 13-strikeout performances in 2018 while at Tennessee.

The No. 8 Seminoles defeat Kent State, but fall to No. 19 Baylor.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Back on the diamond for the first time in nearly two weeks, the Seminoles split their two games on day one of the 2020 Wooo Pig Classic. No. 8 Florida State (8-5) dropped a close game with No. 19 Baylor (16-2) by a score of 2-1, before posting an 11-1 victory over Kent State (7-4) to close out the day.
"It was nice to get back out on the field and play again," said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. "We are still working on a few things, but pleased with how we came back in game two against Kent State. Caylan pitched really well against Baylor in the morning, but we weren't take advantage of our opportunities offensively. Excited to come back out tomorrow and make some adjustments.
Game 2: No. 8 Florida State 11, Kent State 1
A pair of doubles from FSU
freshmen put the Seminoles on the board in the top of the second inning against Kent State. Flaherty drew a walk and stole second, while Josie Muffley was hit by a pitch with two outs. Kaia LoPreste
opened the scoring with a two-run double to the wall in left center, and Landers brought her in with an RBI double of her own, as FSU staked an early 3-0 lead.
The Noles added two more in the top of the third as Morgan led off with a single, stole second and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Mason. Flaherty followed with a solo home run to right center, hitting the first pitch of her AB out of the park for her third round-tripper of the season to push the Seminole lead to 5-0.
Consecutive singles in the bottom of the third inning put Kent State runners on the corners with nobody out. FSU starting pitcher Kathryn Sandercock struck out the next two batters and got out of the inning with a groundout to second base.
The Golden Flashes got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run by Brenna Brownfield.
Sherrill reached on an error by the Kent State RF and got all the way to third base to begin the top of the fifth, before scoring on an RBI groundout by Davis to make it 6-1 Seminoles.
Flaherty drew her second walk in the top of the sixth and also stole her second base of the game to move into scoring position. It didn't matter which base she was on, as she scored on Morgan Noah's first home run of the season, a towering shot to right field to extend the Seminole lead to 8-1.
Sherrill walked to begin the top of the seventh and was pinch-run for by Maegan Tomlinson. Tomlinson stole second and Kaley Mudge followed with a walk. Davis lined a two-run double to left center and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Flaherty for the 11-1 final score.
Brianna Enter pitched the final inning for the Noles and allowed just one baserunner on a walk to close out the game. Sandercock improved to 4-1 on the year, scattering three hits and one run over 6.0 innings, along with zero walks and a career-high six strikeouts. She retired 12 of the last 13 batters she faced on the afternoon.

Softball Tops No. 19 Baylor.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - A complete team win on Saturday as eight different players either recorded a hit, scored a run or drove in an RBI as No. 8 Florida State (9-5) came from behind to post a 5-3 win over No. 19 Baylor (16-4) in day two of the 2020 Wooo Pig Classic.
"Loved the fight out of the team today after falling behind early," said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. "We were more focused and executed in our offensive opportunities. Kat pitched a great game in relief and kept Baylor off balance, while our defense made some nice plays as well. Looking forward to coming back tonight to take on Arkansas."
Baylor took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Kyla Walker led off with a single and scored on a two-run home run by Aliyah Pritchett.
The Seminoles rallied with three runs in the fourth inning as Devyn Flaherty led off with a single and scored on an RBI triple by Dani Morgan. A sacrifice fly by Elizabeth Mason later in the inning tied the game at 2-2. Morgan Noah continued the inning with a two-out single to left and scored on an RBI double by Josie Muffley.
After making plays offensively in the top of the inning, Flaherty flashed the leather in the bottom half of the fourth with an impressive play in the gap in right center, making a catch at a dead sprint to rob an extra-base hit.
Following a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth inning for Baylor, a line drive to Sydney Sherrill at third base was caught and fired back to first for a double play, FSU's eighth double play of the season.
Cassidy Davis opened the FSU sixth inning with an infield single and was pinch-run for by Leslie Farris. Mason hit a ground ball to third, but a Baylor error allowed everyone to be safe. A sacrifice bunt by Noah moved the runners to second and third with one out and Muffley drove in her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to left. Kaia LoPreste made it 5-2 Seminoles with an RBI double to center, her second hit of the ballgame.
Baylor hit a leadoff single to begin the bottom of the seventh inning, and a pair of groundouts moved the runner to third with two away. Maddison Kettler flared an RBI single to left to make it 5-3, before a fly out to right field ended the game.
Brianna Enter gave up two runs on three hits in a 0.2 inning start, while Kathryn Sandercock (5-1) tossed 6.1 innings of relief and allowed one run on seven hits with zero walks and two strikeouts, while retiring 16 of the first 19 batters she faced, including double plays by the Seminoles in the fifth and sixth innings.

No. 8 Florida State Earns Road Win At No. 21 Arkansas.
The Seminoles defeat the Razorbacks, 2-1, at Bogle Park.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - In their first true road game of the season, the Seminoles survived a pitcher's duel against the Razorbacks as No. 8 Florida State (10-5) defeated No. 21 Arkansas (14-4) by a score of 2-1 on Saturday night in front of nearly 2,000 people at Bogle Park.
"Another tough-fought win tonight," said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. "Caylan set the tone in the circle for us and we came through with some key hits to get the win. Outstanding atmosphere here tonight and loved all the experience we gained in a close ballgame in front of a hostile crowd. One more game tomorrow morning and we're looking forward to close out the weekend on a good note."
The Seminoles struck first in the top of the second inning as Cassidy Davis drew a walk and was replaced at first base on a fielder's choice by Elizabeth Mason. Josie Muffley hit her fourth double of the season off the wall in left center to score Mason and put FSU up 1-0.
Florida State threatened in the third inning as Kiersten Landers led off with an infield single, stole second and advanced to third with nobody out on an Arkansas error. Landers was thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice off the bat of Sydney Sherrill, and the next two batters were retired to end the inning.
Arkansas got a leadoff single from Valerie Ventura to start the bottom of the third and she moved up to second base on a sacrifice bunt. A walk by FSU starting pitcher Caylan Arnold put a pair of runners on base, but she struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
FSU added another run in the top of the sixth inning to make it a 2-0 game. Dani Morgan reached on an error by the Arkansas shortstop and scored on an RBI double by Mason.
After a leadoff single to begin the bottom of the sixth inning, Kathryn Sandercock entered to relieve Arnold in the circle. An infield single, followed by a wild pitch and an FSU throwing error allowed Arkansas to score a run. Sandercock got out of the inning with a fly out and a groundout to keep the Seminoles in front, 2-1.
Arnold allowed one unearned run on four hits and just one walk over 5.0 shutout innings. Arnold has not allowed an earned run in her last 9.1 innings and has 14 strikeouts over that span.
The Razorbacks got a runner in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out infield single, but Sandercock retired the next two batters to secure the win and earn her first save of the season. The sophomore finished with two hits over 2.0 innings of relief with one walk and one strikeout.

Seminole Comeback Falls Short Versus Villanova.
Florida State ends the weekend with a 9-6 loss to the Wildcats.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Although they brought the tying run to the plate twice in the bottom of the seventh, the Seminoles' comeback came up short on Sunday as No. 8 Florida State (10-6) dropped its final game of the weekend to Villanova (11-9) by the score of 9-6. The Wildcats used an eight-run third inning, scoring all of them with two outs, to take a lead that they would not relinquish.
Villanova pitcher Paige Rauch won her 10th game of the season on Sunday and is also batting .439 with 10 home runs at the plate this season, as the junior is one of the 50 players on the Watch List for the 2020 USA Softball National Player of the Year.
"Tough way to close out the weekend, but we are still learning and growing," said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. "We can't dwell on this and will need to get refocused for another week full of games in Tallahassee and Orlando this coming week. Overall, a lot of great learning moments and opportunities for the entire team this weekend and I'm looking forward to where we go from here."
After retiring the Wildcats in order in the circle in the top of the first inning, FSU starting pitcher Cassidy Davis helped her own cause in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run home run to left, scoring Dani Morgan who reached on a two-out single. It was her team-leading fourth HR of the season as the Noles took an early 2-0 lead.
Morgan Noah led off the bottom of the second inning with a single to right and scored on a two-out, two-run home run to center by Sydney Sherrill, the 31st HR of her career to make it 4-0 Seminoles.
Davis retired eight of the first nine batters she faced, including a double play in the second inning, but Villanova took the lead in the top of the third with eight runs, all with two outs. After a pair of walks and a pair of RBI singles, Brianna Enter relieved Davis. Enter issued a pair of walks, had a run score on a passed ball and gave up a three-run home run as Villanova went in front, 7-4.
Davis came back in to pitch and gave up a single and an RBI triple, before Kathryn Sandercock took over in the circle. The sophomore got the Noles out of the inning by catching a hard line drive back to the circle.
The Seminoles got a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the fifth inning with singles by Sherrill and Devyn Flaherty, but a fly out and a strikeout left them both stranded on base.
Sandercock faced the minimum through her first 2.1 innings of relief, including a double play in the fifth inning, before a pair of doubles in the top of the sixth inning extended Villanova's lead to 9-4.
Kaia LoPreste opened the FSU seventh inning with a single to center and was pinch-run for by Maegan Tomlinson. After a groundout moved her up to second with one out, Tomlinson scored on an RBI single to center by Sherrill, her third hit of the game.
The inning continued with a walk by Flaherty and Morgan was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Davis hit a sacrifice fly to make it 9-6 with runners on the corners and two outs, but a pop out ended the game.

Freshmen Carry Noles Over Holy Cross.
No. 11 Florida State posted an 8-0 win on Tuesday night against the Crusaders.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Back at home for the first time in 20 days, the Seminoles improved to 7-0 at JoAnne Graf Field this season as No. 11 Florida State (11-6) posted an 8-0 win over Holy Cross (0-6) on Tuesday night. The contest was an FSU softball reunion, as Holy Cross head coach Jen Lapicki played for the Seminoles in 2010-11.
The FSU freshmen shined against the Crusaders as seven of the 11 hits, including two doubles and a triple came from newcomers, as Devyn Flaherty, Chloe Culp and Kaia LoPreste each had two hits and Kaley Mudge drove in the final run of the game with a single.
"It was really special to have Jen back here this week," said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. "Because we are here every day, sometimes you don't realize what it means for players to come back. It's nostalgic for them, but also great to see someone that you've coached develop and move on with something they love.
"We've talked from the beginning about growth and getting better as a team every day and every at bat. I think the fans look at the wins and losses, but a coach or someone within the program looks at who is having moments. So, whether they succeed or fail, they are having moments to impact a game. When you start to become comfortable in those moments, regardless of the outcome, you are able to be present for your team. It was nice to see our growth tonight, especially from the freshmen."
The Seminoles quickly staked a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sydney Sherrill drew a walk and quickly scored on an RBI triple to right center by Flaherty, her team-leading third triple of the season. An infield single by Elizabeth Mason with two outs scored Flaherty to make it 2-0 FSU. It is the seventh time this season that Florida State has scored in the first inning with the Noles plating 27 runs in the opening frame, more than any other inning so far in 2020.
Culp and LoPreste opened the FSU second inning with a pair of singles, but the next three Noles were all retired to leave them stranded.
Cassidy Davis showed off her speed in the bottom of the third inning with an infield single, followed by stealing second base for the first stolen base of her career. Davis scored on a rare sacrifice fly from second base, as Mason's fly ball to right center was caught as the right fielder ran into the wall and momentarily lost her balance. It gave Davis enough time to round third and score all the way from second on the play to make it 3-0 Seminoles.
The inning continued with a walk by Morgan Noah and Culp lined the first pitch of her AB off the wall in center for an RBI double, extending the lead to 4-0.
Kathryn Sandercock entered to replace FSU starting pitcher Caylan Arnold in the top of the fourth inning. Arnold was perfect in her 3.0 innings of work, striking out six of the nine batters she faced. The senior pitcher extended her streak to 12.1 innings without allowing an earned run, dating back to February 28 against No. 19 Baylor.
Sherrill made it 5-0 Seminoles with a solo home run to left center in the bottom of the fourth, her fourth HR of the season.
Sandercock (6-1) allowed just one baserunner on an infield single in her 2.0 innings of relief, while recording a pair of strikeouts. Brianna Enter pitched the top of the sixth inning and allowed one hit and had a strikeout.
Florida State closed out the game in the sixth inning as LoPreste singled up the middle and Maegan Tomlinson came in to pinch run at first. A single by Sherrill and an RBI double by Flaherty made it 6-0 FSU. A sacrifice fly by Dani Morgan brought in a run and a game-ending RBI single by Mudge secured the 8-0 win for Florida State.

Seminoles Top No. 22 UCF On The Road.
No. 11 Florida State posted an 8-3 victory over the Knights on Wednesday night.
ORLANDO, Fla. - Improving to 2-0 on the season against ranked teams on the road, No. 11 Florida State (12-6) defeated No. 22 UCF (16-3) by the score of 8-3 on Wednesday night at the UCF Softball Complex. Seven different Seminoles scored a run in the victory, as FSU and UCF were able to play the game that was originally scheduled for February 26 in Tallahassee.
"So proud of the team's focus and mindset tonight," said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. "To have a game last night at home and then turn around and get on a bus this morning and play such competitive team on the road, that showed a lot of maturity. And we are going to need a lot of that in the coming weeks as we will be in the grind of several road trips. We executed in a lot of difficult situations, both offensively and defensively, and we can continue to grow that heading into this weekend's tournament."
The Seminoles opened the scoring in the top of the third inning as Morgan Noah lined a single to center and moved up to second on a walk by Sydney Sherrill, her 19th walk of the season. Dani Morgan followed with an RBI single to left, scoring Noah to put FSU in front, 1-0.
UCF threatened in the fourth inning as the Knights got runners on first and second with one out after a hit-by-pitch and a bunt single, but FSU starting pitcher Caylan Arnold struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
Florida State extended its lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning, as Cassidy Davis and Josie Muffley each hit solo home runs to center and left field, respectively. It marked the second time this season that the Noles have hit back-to-back home runs, joining Sherrill and Devyn Flaherty on February 8 against Detroit Mercy.
Kathryn Sandercock entered the circle to pitch for Arnold in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sandercock retired the Knights in order in the frame, including a nice play at first base by Flaherty and a diving catch in left field by Kaley Mudge to end the inning.
The Noles added two more runs in the top of the sixth as Mudge opened the inning with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on an infield single by Sherrill. A fielder's choice of the bat of Flaherty scored Mudge with the first out of the inning. Flaherty moved up to second when Morgan was hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI single by Muffley.
Florida State closed out its scoring with three runs in the top of the seventh on a three-run home run by pinch hitter Chloe Culp. Mudge hit a two-out double to right center and Sherrill continued the inning with her fourth walk of the game, before Culp launched her fourth HR of the season over the wall in center to put FSU up 8-0.
UCF rallied in the bottom of the seventh and scored three runs for the 8-3 final score. A single and a double brought in a run before Sandercock retired the next two hitters. The Knights used a walk and a pair of RBI singles to bring in the last two runs.
Arnold (4-2) extended her streak to 16.1 innings without allowing an earned run, as the senior tossed 4.0 scoreless innings with two hits, one walk and five strikeouts. Sandercock earned her second save of the season, giving up three runs on four hits with one walk over 3.0 innings of relief.

Noles Shutout Longwood.
Florida State posted a 6-0 win over Longwood to begin THE Spring Games.
LONGWOOD, Fla. - Opening its weekend at THE Spring Games with a victory, No. 11 Florida State (13-6) posted a 6-0 shutout of Longwood (5-10) on Friday night at Boombah-Soldiers Creek Park in Longwood, Fla.
Kathryn Sandercock allowed just one hit over 6.0 innings as the sophomore improved to 7-1 with the win. She allowed a total of three runners in the game on a walk and a hit-by-pitch and also recorded a strikeout.
"Nice way to start the weekend," said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. "Kat was commanding in the circle tonight and our lineup continually put pressure on them throughout the game. Quick turnaround with a pair of games tomorrow morning, and excited for the opportunity."
Sydney Sherrill opened the top of the first inning by lining the first pitch off the wall in left for a double. It was her fourth double of the season and 51st of her career, moving her into a tie with Jessie Warren (2015-18) and Alex Powers (2014-17) for the FSU career record.
Kiersten Landers opened the FSU third inning with a walk and Sherrill followed with an infield single. Josie Muffley put the Seminoles on the board with a single through the left side to make it 1-0 FSU. A walk by Cassidy Davis and a double steal put Seminole runners on second and third with two outs, by a fly out ended the inning.
Sandercock retired each of the first seven batters she faced, before issuing a one-out walk in the bottom of the third inning. That baserunner was quickly sent back to the dugout as a groundball up the middle was fielded by Morgan Noah and the sophomore stepped on second and fired to first for the inning-ending double play.
The Seminoles broke the game open in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs to extend their lead to 5-0. Kaia LoPreste opened the scoring in the inning by hitting a solo home run to left field, her first career HR, to make it 2-0 Noles. Noah reached on a Longwood error, stole second and moved up to third base on a passed ball. After another walk by Landers and a stolen base by the freshman, Sherrill drove in both runners with a single up the middle. Dani Morgan continued the inning with a single to left field, and Muffley closed out the scoring in the frame with a sacrifice fly to center.
Florida State added another run in the top of the sixth inning, as Noah led off with a walk and Landers followed with a bunt single. Kaley Mudge drove in a run with an RBI single up the middle.
Sandercock did not allow a hit through the first 5.1 innings of the game before a one-out double in the bottom of the sixth by Leah Powell. Softball Takes Two On Saturday At THE Spring Games.
LONGWOOD, Fla. - Earning a pair of come-from-behind victories on Saturday afternoon, the Seminoles extended their winning streak to five games as No. 11 Florida State (15-6) defeated Creighton (10-9) by the score of 2-1, and posted a 10-5 victory over Charleston Southern (9-9) at THE Spring Games in Longwood, Fla.
Dani Morgan hit a home run in both games, including a two-run HR in the bottom of the sixth inning against Creighton to put the Noles in front. She finished the day 3-for-6 with a walk, three RBI and three runs scored.
"Nice to see the team stay in it and work through some adversity this afternoon," said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. "Caylan and Kat pitched really well in each game, allowing the offense to get back in the games. We had a lot of players in a lot of different positions and situations today, so it was good to see everyone gain experience and develop. Two more games tomorrow morning to close out the weekend."
Game 1: No. 11 Florida State 2, Creighton 1
The Seminoles got a pair of runners on with two outs in the second inning with a
walk by Kaia LoPreste and a single from Morgan Noah, but a strikeout left them both stranded.
FSU starting pitcher Caylan Arnold retired each of the first six batters she faced, until a leadoff single by Kiara Mills to start the top of the third inning. Mills moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a two-out RBI double by Ashley Cantu. The run snapped a streak of 19.0 innings without allowing an earned run for Arnold, dating back to February 28 against Baylor.
The Bluejays got another runner to second base in the fifth inning on a hit-by-pitch and a stolen base, but Noah made a great catch on a ball destined for extra bases to end the inning.
Creighton threatened in the top of the sixth, getting a runner third base with one out after a single, a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Arnold got out of the jam with a strikeout and a pop out.
The Seminoles took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Cassidy Davis hit an infield single with two outs in the inning and Morgan followed with a two-run home run to left center to make it 2-1 Florida State.
The Bluejays got the leadoff runner on base in the top of the seventh inning via a hit-by-pitch, but Arnold retired the next three batters in order to close out the victory for Florida State.
Arnold improved to 5-2 on the season in the complete-game victory, scattering three hits and one run over 7.0 innings, with zero walks and nine strikeouts.

Game 2: No. 11 Florida State 10, Charleston Southern 5
Charleston Southern opened the scoring in the bottom of the first
inning as FSU starting pitcher Bianca Cruz allowed a bunt single and an RBI double to the first two batters she faced. Kathryn Sandercock entered to pitch for the Noles and the Buccaneers hit another

The Noles bounced back and took the lead in the top of the second as Dani Morgan drew a walk, followed by consecutive singles by Devyn Flaherty, Chloe Culp and an RBI single by Morgan Noah to tie the game at 1-1. A fielder's choice by LoPreste and a CSU error allowed another run to score and Sydney Sherrill closed out the scoring with an RBI single to left field to make it 3-1 Florida State.
The Seminoles loaded the bases with one out in the third inning on singles by Cassidy Davis and Morgan, along with Devyn Flaherty reaching on a catcher's interference. All would be left stranded on a pair of groundouts by FSU.

Sandercock retired 11 of the 12 batters she faced until a leadoff single from Madison Koger in the bottom of the fifth inning. She would be sent back to the dugout as a ground ball to Leslie Farris was flipped to Josie Muffley at second and fired to Flaherty at first for FSU's 14th double play of the season.
The Seminoles scored an unearned run in sixth inning after a double by Davis and a Charleston Southern error allowing Davis to score and make it 7-1 FSU.

Seminoles Fall On The Road At Florida.
No. 10 Florida State drops its first road game of the season on Wednesday.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - In a back and forth battle between two of the Top 10 teams in the country, No. 10 Florida State (17-7) came up short on Wednesday night as No. 7 Florida (23-4) earned a 5-2 win over the Seminoles in the first game of the annual Sunshine Showdown against the Gators. Florida scored the first four of their runs with a pair of two-run home runs, both with two outs, by Charla Echols and Kendyl Lindaman.
"Tonight was everything we had expected it to be," said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. "A very competitive game and we were able to get a lot of our newcomers in a numerous postseason-like situations. I thought Caylan pitched well tonight and Florida did a good job of taking advantage of their opportunities. It will be fun to see how both teams have grown and changed when we meet again in Tallahassee in several weeks."
Florida State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a solo home run by Elizabeth Mason, her fourth of the season. It was the first HR allowed in 2020 by Florida starting pitcher Rylee Trlicek, who entered the game with 48.2 innings pitched.
The Gators threatened in the bottom of the first, getting runners to second and third with one out after a pair of walks and a passed ball. Caylan Arnold left them both stranded after a strikeout and a groundout to third base to end the inning.
Florida took the lead in the bottom of the third inning on a two-out, two-run home run by Echols, scoring Lindaman, who reached earlier in the inning on a single.
Morgan Noah opened the FSU fifth inning with a double to left field and quality situational hitting, along with aggressive baserunning, allowed the Noles to tie the game. Freshman Kaley Mudge put down a sacrifice bunt to move Noah to third with one out, while a high chopper to the right side of the circle by Leslie Farris scored Noah as the sophomore got in under the tag at the plate, squaring the game at 2-2.
After a two-out double in the bottom of the fifth inning by Hannah Adams, Kathryn Sandercock entered to pitch for Arnold. The Gators went back in front as the next batter, Lindaman, hit a two-run home run to right field.
Florida added an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the leadoff batter reached on a Seminole error and scored on an RBI single to left. Brianna Enter came in to relieve Sandercock and retired both batters she faced to end the inning.
Arnold (5-3) took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Sandercock allowed two runs, one earned, with two walks and two hits over 0.2 innings of relief.
