Hunter Opens Regional With FSU's Eighth No-Hitter Of The Year In 4-0 Win.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - On a night where All-American Jessica van der Linden became just the second FSU player ever to record 50 RBIs and Veronica Wootson scorched Long Island (27-27) with three hits and three runs scored, it was junior hurler Casey Hunter (33-3) that stole the show. The junior baffled the Blackbirds all afternoon as she pitched her fourth no-hitter of the year and the fifth no-no of her career. She led No. 4 FSU (58-9) to a 4-0 win over LIU in NCAA Region Four play as she fanned six hitters while issuing just two walks. Hunter faced just one batter over the minimum and no LIU batter made it past first.
"I think it is great we as a team started the tournament off the right way," said Hunter. "It wasn't my best day but I was able to hit the corners enough to get the job done. None of my pitches were consistent throughout the game."
"Hunter pitched a very nice game and obviously we didn't hit too many balls hard," said Long Island head coach Roy Kortmann. "I thought Jackie Brown did a pretty good job. She kept the ball in pretty good spots I think Florida State hit three or four balls relatively hard other than that most of their shots found little alleys or holes. My hat's off to Hunter."
Florida State's All-American van der Linden went 1-for-2 with two RBIs including her 19th game-winning RBI of the year as she continued to plate runs at a record pace. Wootson provided the spark for the FSU offense all day long as she went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a triple. Elisa Vasquez drove in a run as did Tatiana George who went 2-for-3 on the day. The win was a big one for the Tribe after dropping its first game of 2003 regional play on its way to a 0-2 showing.
"The first game of any tournament is the one you worry about the most," said Florida State head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf. "We were favored and I didn't want our kids to be lackadaisical and they did a great job really paying attention to the game. Long Island has a great ball club and they are very aggressive. They don't give up.
"Obviously Casey throwing a no-hitter definitely helped. Veronica was the sparkplug of the day getting the first two runs. That kind of set the stage for us to get a head and we relaxed a little bit."
The Seminoles took an early lead in the first off LIU starter Jackie Brown (10-8). All-region freshman Wootson led the game off with an infield single and then swiped second. Natasha Jacob's fly ball moved her to third and Wootson came home on van der Linden's 50th RBI of the year. She is only the second Seminole ever to record 50 or more RBIs. Lesley Palmer followed with another infield single and pinch runner Carly Brieske moved to second on a walk to Elisa Vasquez. Tatiana George then singled to short but Brieske was thrown out at home trying to score on the play to end the inning.
"Veronica is a very instinctive base runner and with her speed you want to be aggressive," said Graf. "Anytime you score the first run with our pitching staff and our defense it gets you up a little bit. Veronica has been our sparkplug and our leadoff all season long. She has done a great job and she did that again today. She is the one player that ignites us and gets us going."
The top of the Tribe line-up went back to work in the third as Wootson and Jacob both reached on infield singles. van der Linden then drove in her second RBI of the day with a single up the middle but Jacob was thrown out at third on the play. After a line out to left, Elisa Vasquez reached on an error putting runners on the corners but Brown got out of the inning on a foul out.
Wootson led off the fifth with her third hit of the game and her seventh triple of the season. Jacob followed with a bunt single, which she advanced to second on when nobody was covering the bag. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Brown got the first out when she struck out Carly Brieske. Vasquez got the job done though as her deep fly to center plated the Seminoles' third run of the contest. Tatiana George scored another run off Brown when her single to left field scored the Tribe's fourth run of the game.

van der Linden Two-Hits Northridge As No. 4 Seminoles Down Matadors 1-0.
Seminoles hand Cal State Northridge just their third shutout of the
season.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Seminole senior Jessica van der Linden continues to make her case to become the next USA Softball Player of the Year. The 2003 All-American went 2-for-3 at the plate, drove in her 19th game-winning RBI of the year and shutout a Cal State Northridge team (34-18) that had been shutout just twice all season. The senior leader struck out 12 and walked just two as she picked up her 26th win in leading FSU (59-9) to a 1-0 victory at the 2004 NCAA Region No. 4 tournament.
van der Linden was simply rough as nails despite three errors behind her including two in the seventh inning that loaded the bases for CSUN. The Cerritos, CA native struck out her 11th batter of the game with runners at second and third and then got leadoff hitter Laura Hovestreydt watching strike three to keep FSU in the winner's bracket and set up a showdown with No. 2 seed Oregon Saturday at noon.
"I think she (van der Linden) has a lot of guts. Jessica has been a fighter her whole career at Florida State," said head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf. "She is leaving it all on the field. Jess gave it everything she had. It was an outstanding performance today against a great hitting team. Cal State Northridge is a great hitting team. It was an exceptional performance.
"We (these two teams) played about as good a softball game as anyone will ever see. Both teams played well, both teams played with a lot of heart. One hit by either team would have made the difference. We saw no quit in either team. Cal State Northridge did a great job and I felt our kids did a great job. Exceptional, exceptional ball game. I think Cal State Northridge will hang around in this tournament for awhile."
The Seminole offense worked to perfection in the top of the first versus Matador starter Kia Fennell (18-10). Veronica Wootson drew a walk and was moved to second by Natasha Jacob on a sac bunt, her team-leading 18th of the year. Then van der Linden came up and did what she has done more than 50 times this season. The ACC Player of the Year drove in a run with a single to left center. The hit drove Wootson home from third after the freshman moved up on a passed ball and the RBI was the 52nd of the year for van der Linden who is now one away from tying the single season school record.
After delivering at the plate in the top of the first, van der Linden worked her magic in the bottom of the first inning. Two illegal pitch calls on strikes seemed to throw the All-American off at first as she lost the first batter and eventually loaded the bases with one out on an error and a hit by pitch. The senior came back and struck out her second and third batters of the inning as Cal State Northridge couldn't cash in and left the bases full in the first.
"The first thing was Jess (van der Linden) getting out of the first inning without giving up a run. If you have to pick a single thing that won the game, I think that was it," said Graf. "If they score two or three runs and we only score one, they win. I think she did a great job, maintained her composure and got out of that inning with no runs scored."
The Matadors looked to even the game in the bottom of the fifth. Fennell started the inning by reaching on a leadoff walk before an infield fly gave the Tribe its first out of the frame. Cal State Northridge then put pinch hitter Monique Lovell in the game. The senior sent an infield shot to second where Tatiana George scooped up the ball, tagged second and then completed the double play with a strike to Beth Wade at first to end the inning.
The DP seemed to spark the offense as Wootson started the inning by smashing a liner to first that was snared before back-to-back hits by Jacob and van der Linden put FSU back in business. A walk to Lesley Palmer then loaded the bases but Elisa Vasquez's pop out and Tatiana George's ground out ended the threat and kept CSUN alive in a 1-0 game.
The Seminoles looked to get an insurance run in the top of the seventh as they once again put runners on second and third but Fennell worked her way out of another jam. The CSUN hurler once again bent but didn't break as FSU stranded it sixth and seventh runners of the day.
"Our kids are trying a little too hard. We talked about it in the locker room; you can't make something happen that isn't there," said Graf. "Instead of trying to hit a sac fly, we were trying to hit it out of the park. We just have to try to make contact with the ball and try and get that one run home at least. Another run would have been huge. It could have made the difference. That is just something that we need to improve on."
The Matadors put the tying run on base with one out in the seventh as Fennell came up looking to help her own cause. The hurler looked as if she had hit into a double play but a booted ball at short put runners on first and second with still just one away. van der Linden's 11th K of the game brought FSU within one out of advancing in the winner's bracket. The All-American came within one strike of closing the game before another error cost the Tribe and loaded the bases. The hurler once again came within one strike of closing out the Matadors and this time she took care of business herself as she ended the game with her 12th K.
"I think our team has it in the back of our head about the 7th inning. We are just so excited about trying to win the game ourselves, or to try and help our pitchers out, because they are throwing their heart out and we are trying too hard to be right there with them," said George. "We got out of that because Jess came up big."

Wootson's Walk-Off Hit In The 12th Sends FSU To Regional Championship.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Saturday's winner's bracket game at the NCAA Region 4 Tournament between No. 4 FSU and No. 12 Oregon (40-20) had it all. There was a big inning, a big comeback, high drama and a bases loaded walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning as FSU (60-9) downed the Ducks 5-4. Veronica Wootson recorded the game-winning hit and Jessica van der Linden (27-6) pitched nine scoreless innings in relief as the Seminoles moved into a regional championship game for the fourth time in the last five years.
The Seminoles, whose 60th win is the third-most in school history and the most in the nation, fell down early as Oregon jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The Tribe used a three run inning of its own to later tie the game and after leaving two runners on base in the ninth and three on base in the 11th, Wootson's RBI single sent FSU into the regional championship game. Wootson went 3-for-5 on the day with three RBIs including two that tied the game and the one that won the contest.
"I think you saw just an unbelievable ball game," said FSU head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf. "Both teams played well. Our kids showed a lot of heart coming back from being behind four runs, just keeping after it even after we missed some opportunities in the game. That really showed a lot of heart and I'm glad we don't have to play again tonight."
"First of all, congratulations to Florida State. They played great," said Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen. "They came from behind. They put relentless pressure on us. I thought we made some incredible stands. Finally, we just got broken down after awhile. They are a great team. (Jessica) van der Linden did a super job. They came up with the hits when they needed them. We played a great game and we played a great team. To me it was an epic battle that one team was going to win, and it was going to be a disappointment to the other team. It could've easily been us."
van der Linden once again showed why she is a finalist for USA Softball Player of the Year honors. After starter Casey Hunter surrendered four runs in just three innings, van der Linden relieved her with one batter on base in the top of the fourth. She went on to allow just two hits, walk two batters and strike out 11 Oregon batters. It was the seventh time in her last ten appearances that she has fanned double digit batters and it is the 18th time she has done it in 37 appearances.
The senior also got the job done at the plate when the Ducks allowed her. She went 2-for-4 with an RBI but was walked intentionally twice in extra innings with runners in scoring position. Her third-inning RBI tied a single season record as she now has 53 on the year.
"I think van der Linden is very good; she's an all-American," said Arendsen. "She is player of the year and all those other things for a reason. She's excellent. I don't think we made a lot of adjustments very well, but give her a lot of credit. They made some good defensive plays, and dog-gone it, she just made some good pitches."
"We had it in our mind that if either pitcher, whichever game they start, if they got in trouble early we're going to bring the other one in because we have great confidence in both of them," said Graf. "It just seemed like they were really hitting Casey (Hunter) pretty well, so once they got up, we decided even down four runs, we still, with our hitters, had a chance to win the game. We weren't giving up on the game at that point at all. That's why we made the decision to bring Jess (van der Linden) in. A different kind of pitcher, hopefully could keep them a little off balanced."
A hit by Beth Boskovich and a controversial call put the Ducks in good position in the third in what was the beginning of the end for Hunter. With one away and a runner on first, Goddell pooped a ball up between short and the pitcher. Tatiana George made a diving grab, which she thought was good for the second out. The umpire ruled it was trapped putting runners on first and second for Ashley Richards, UO's leading hitter. The call ended up hurting FSU as Richard's doubled to left field plating two runs and putting the Ducks in front 2-0. Jenn Poore then added to the Oregon lead as her single to right scored Richards with the third run of the game. The inning looked like it was over on a grounder to short but the Seminoles' fourth error of the weekend cost them a run this time as Oregon went up 4-0.
The Seminoles looked to answer back in the bottom of the third against Duck starter Ani Nyhus. LaShaun Davis started the frame with a walk and Wootson followed with a base knock up the middle putting runners on first and second with nobody away. Davis got caught off the bag on a bunt and run for the first out before Wootson moved up on the pick off and then got to third on a wild pitch. Natasha Jacob's walk put runners on the corners for van der Linden, the Tribe's leading hitter and RBI producer. With the USA Softball Player of the Year finalist at the plate Oregon went to the bullpen and made a pitching change bringing in Amy Harris. The first pitch she threw to van der Linden was blooped into right field scoring Wootson and putting runners on first and second with still just one out. Harris got Lesley Palmer swinging at strike three for the second out and then she got Elisa Vasquez swinging also as she finished off the Seminoles in the third.
As soon as Oregon led off the fourth with a hit, Hunter was pulled in favor of van der Linden as the Tribe looked to pull out all the stops to stay in the winner's bracket. A sacrifice moved the runner, Breanne Sabol, to second then as walk to Boskovich put two runners aboard for Goddell. After a sac moved both runners into scoring position Richards stepped in looking to add to her two RBIs already in the game. van der Linden got the leading Duck hitter to pop out to Wootson behind first to end the inning and keep FSU within striking distance.
After van der Linden set the Ducks' 3-4-5 hitters down in order in the top of the fifth, Davis led off the home half with an infield single to first. Wootson recorded the first out on a fielder's choice and Jacob then singled into center field putting runners on first and second with just one away for van der Linden. The senior was unable to get on base though as she grounded out to Harris while moving the runners up a base in the process. Harris then worked her way out of another jam as she got Palmer swinging at strike three.
FSU put another base runner on in the sixth as George drew a one-out walk. An error on the Duck shortstop then put two Seminoles on with pinch hitter Katie Fricke coming up to the plate. Fricke was hit in the leg loading the bases as the Tribe once again looked for the big hit that has eluded them all afternoon. Harris uncorked a wild pitch that moved both runners up and allowed George to come home and cut the lead to 4-2. Oregon re-entered Nyhus who was pulled in the third to try and set down the Seminole uprising. The Oregon hurler couldn't dig herself out of the 2-0 hole she inherited and ended up walking Davis to load the bases for Wootson who was hitting .357 with the bases loaded coming into the game. The freshman delivered a single through the left side scoring two runs and tying the game but Davis was thrown out at third for the second out of the frame. Wootson, who advanced to second on the throw then swiped third with Jacob at the plate versus new UO pitcher Anissa Meashintubby (11-4). The hurler got the ground ball out to end the inning.
van der Linden set the Ducks' 1-2-3 hitters down in order as she ended the frame with Richards looking at strike three setting the stage for the bottom of the seventh where she led off the inning with another hit, this one up the middle. It was her fifth hit of the tournament and the second of the day. Palmer tried to sacrifice the runner but fouled two pitches off before watching three straight balls. Meashintubby got Palmer to ground into a fielder's choice wiping van der Linden off the bases. Vasquez was called out on an attempted sacrifice as the ball hit her on her way to first and George then struck out to move the game into extra innings.
Oregon led off the eighth with an infield single but FSU cut down the lead runner on an attempted to sacrifice for the first out. van der Linden then recorded her fourth K of the day for out number two before a pop out to short ended the top of the eighth.
Another FSU error put the Oregon leadoff runner on base in the top of the ninth as Sabol reached on an errant throw that allowed her to move to second. A passed ball moved the potential winning run 60 feet from home. A walk to the number nine hitter put runners on the corners for the top of the UO line-up. Boskovich recorded the first out when she got caught watching strike three. After a stolen base put both runners in scoring position, a missed suicide squeeze allowed Vasquez to cut down the runner at third for the second out of the inning. She then ended the threat with her sixth K of the inning to move to the home half of the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, FSU sent its first three hitters to the plate. The trio came into the inning owning five of FSU's seven hits in the game. Wootson got on via a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. Jacob popped out to second on a slap hit bringing up van der Linden and her 53 RBIs. The Ducks wanted no part of the All-American intentionally walking her and bringing up Palmer. The junior grounded to short but the ball was booted and Wootson was sent home from third on the play. Oregon nailed her trying to score and end the game. Meashintubby then ended the rally with her fourth K of the game.
The Ducks went down in the tenth in order thanks to two more van der Linden K's as she raised her total to eight in seven innings. The Seminoles followed with a 1-2-3 winning of their own as the game moved into the 11th.
Oregon started the top of the inning striking out for the ninth time versus van der Linden before a single put a runner on at first. A fly out to right and the hurler's 10th K brought the top of the 11th to a close.
Davis started the home half of the 11th with a hit as she singled on a chopper just a couple feet in front of the plate. Wootson's sacrifice bunt moved Davis to second before an error at short on a Jacob hopper put runners on the corners with one away. van der Linden was intentionally walked for the second straight time to load the bases as FSU once again had the winning run just 60 feet from home. Meashintubby once again pulled a Houdini act as she struck out Palmer and got Vasquez to ground out as the Tribe stranded its 13th base runner of the afternoon.
The third error of the day for FSU allowed Oregon to put a lead off runner on base to start the 12th inning. A line out and a sacrifice bunt put a runner on second with two away but the threat came to an end when Richards got called out watching strike three.
Tatiana George led off the 12th with a single over third and Wade reached on a fielder's choice but the Ducks were unable to put George out at second. An error loaded the bases with nobody out as FSU looked to close out the game once again. Davis' fielder's choice kept the bases loaded but also kept the game tied as Oregon recorded the force out at home. That opened the door for Wootson who chopped a shot over short to score the game-winner. It was her sixth of the season and the second-most on the team behind van der Linden's 19.
"It was stressful. I went up there and I wasn't trying to force anything. I was relaxed and I knew I had a job to do and I wanted to get it done regardless of what I did," said Wootson. "I wanted this game, not only for myself but for my team. I put my heart into this game, honestly."

ONE MORE GAME: No.12 Oregon Forces A Second Game At NCAA Tournament.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The fourth-ranked FSU softball team doesn't do much the easy way and if they want to get to the school's seventh Women's College World Series they have to take the hard route. The Tribe (60-10) dropped just their second game at home all season as they fell to No. 12 Oregon (42-20) 1-0 in the first game of championship Sunday at the NCAA Region 4 Tournament. The teams will meet one more time at 3:35 to determine the regional champion and Women's College World Series participant.
Ace Jessica van der Linden (27-7) looked like she picked up right where she left off versus Oregon Saturday when she pitched nine innings in relief and allowed only two hits. The back-to-back ACC Player of the Year struck out four of the first six batters she faced moving the game into the third tied 0-0.
Beth Wade then opened the third with her 12th double of the season, which tied her for the team lead. The senior was replaced on the bases by sophomore Carey Galuppi who was sacrificed to third by Kim Hoffer who recorded her 12th sac of the season. Ani Nyhus (25-12), who picked up the win, worked out of trouble though as she got LaShaun Davis swinging at strike three and then popped up Veronica Wootson to end the threat.
Oregon put its first runner of the game on base in the bottom of the fourth as van der Linden issued her first walk of the game. After recording her sixth K, Ashley Richards broke up the no-hit bid with a hard hit single into left center putting runners on first and second. van der Linden came back and got Jenn Poore on a foul out to the catcher for out number two. Dani Baird then singled down the right field line. Boskovich charged home on the play and Davis' throw from right beat the runner to the plate. The home plate umpire called the Oregon runner safe indicating the tag at home was not applied. A walk loaded the bases as the Ducks looked to break the game wide-open with two away but van der Linden got the third out to keep the game within a run at 1-0.
In the top of the sixth, Natasha Jacob reached on a two-out bunt single. It was the first base runner for FSU against Nyhus since Lesley Palmer reached on an error in the fourth. The Seminoles were unable to cash in though as Oregon moved within three outs of forcing a second and deciding championship game.
Lesley Palmer tried to spark a Seminole rally when she led off the top of the seventh with a single up the middle. Carly Brieske pinch ran for the junior with the torn ACL and was moved to second on a perfect sac bunt by Vasquez. Tatiana George then singled over third on a hard chopper and advanced to second on the throw. With runners on second and third with just one away, FSU sent Wade to the plate in search of the tying run. The Ducks opted to load the bases and issue Wade a free pass. Pinch hitter Katie Fricke then stepped in looking to tie the game up or give FSU its first lead of the day but Nyhus was too tough and she ended the game on back-to-back ground outs.

FSU Headed To Second WCWS In Three Years After Beating No. 12 Ducks 2-0.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Just when you thought she had done it all, senior Jessica van der Linden put her team on her back and led them to their second Women's College World Series in the last three years. The All-American pitched both games for No. 4 FSU (61-10) Sunday recording 13 innings of work and limiting No. 12 Oregon (42-21) to just one run and four hits in two games. Her two-hit shutout in the deciding game was a thing of beauty as she retired 20 of the last 22 batters she faced as the Tribe downed Oregon 2-0 to advance to the WCWS for the seventh time in school history.
van der Linden was dominant picking up her 19th shutout of the year and raising her single season strikeout record to 366. She let just one base runner advance past first and in the final game she struck out eight and didn't allow a single walk. For the regional van der Linden went 3-1 with a 0.24 ERA in 29 innings of work. She allowed just one run and eight hits while fanning 38 batters. At the plate she led FSU hitting with a .462 average, four RBIs and a .611 on base percentage. She was walked five times and all five were intentional. For her efforts, van der Linden was named the NCAA Region 4 most outstanding player in a unanimous vote of SIDs and media.
"Well it is fun to be on the winning end. A gutsy performance and again, it's kind of been our season-long mantra but after losing the first game 1-0 and we didn't really hit the ball until the last inning, the kids just rebounded awesome and they came back," said head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf. "For Jessica (van der Linden) to pitch both games the whole time, I mean what a performance because it was hot, hot, hot out there. She had a lot of guts and I think did a great job and we got enough runs to win the ball game - one more than we need because they didn't even score and that's a credit to our defense and our pitching staff."
"Jess is a real champion, a real fighter," said Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen. "We saw (USF pitcher) Leigh Ann Ellis throw two games back-to-back yesterday but not in the same circumstances. She's tough. She didn't make mistakes, has great location and probably some of the best poise I've seen. Obviously, how she goes, is how Florida State goes and she was very, very good in the second game."
While van der Linden was doing her job on the hill the Ducks were not going to let her beat them at the plate as they intentionally walked her twice in the championship game after singling in her only at bat. That opened the door for unsung hero Natasha Jacob to step in. The burgeoning sophomore drove in both runs for FSU in the win as she finished the regional hitting .412 with a double and two RBIs in the final.
"Great games. I think these are two incredibly evenly matched teams. In great games like that, it always one mistake or one base hit that makes a difference," said Arendsen. "(Natasha) Jacob was outstanding against us all weekend. She was one of their key hitters against us and she stepped up huge. I didn't even know she had that kind of power but she stepped into one and got it. And that's the difference. That's the way it goes."
After recording just two hits in the first game of the day versus van der Linden and four hits in the last 16 innings, Oregon recorded the first hit of the championship final just two batters in as Breanne Sabol singled to left field but she couldn't get past second as van der Linden fanned the next two hitters.
The Tribe didn't wait long to get their first hit of the day either as van der Linden sent a two-out single up the middle in the first against Ani Nyhus (28-7) but FSU was unable to capitalize. The next Tribe hit came with one away in the third and it was off the bat of LaShaun Davis. Davis moved to second on a ground out before Jacob blasted a double to deep right center plating Davis and giving FSU its first lead of the day. Oregon didn't wait long to make a move in response to the double as they brought Amy Harris into the game after intentionally walking van der Linden for her third IBB of the weekend. Harris then got Palmer swinging at strike three as Oregon continued to have the big hitter's number this weekend.
"LaShaun (Davis) came up with a great hit," said Jacob. "The whole game I was kind of topping the ball and I was looking for something to drive in the outfield and the outfield was playing in, maybe anticipating the slap or something. I saw a pitch that I liked and I just drove it. I was thinking, 'Please drop, please drop.' It was hanging for awhile but their outfield was playing pretty far in and I was just wanting Shaun (Davis) to score."
"After the seventh inning in the first game, I was a little upset that I didn't come through (leaving the bases loaded) but in the next game, I was still just as confident and I knew we were going to have to get it done a different way," said Davis. "I knew in the second game, we'd get it done and I had the opportunity to help. It was great. I was so happy because I knew that after I made it to second base; I knew Tasha could do it or whoever else came behind. I have a lot of confidence in my team and I knew if I could just get on base and get us going, we'd score."
van der Linden continued to do everything in her power to help the 1-0 lead stand up as she retired 14 straight batters after giving up a hit in the first inning. FSU was unable to break through versus Harris either until the bottom of the fifth when Veronica Wootson chopped a single down the third base line and got all the way to third on a throwing error. Then the hero of the day once again came through as Jacob lined a shot up the middle and into center field driving in the second run of the game for FSU. The hit brought in the second run for FSU and the third pitcher of the day for the Ducks as Allison Meashintubby took the circle. Jacob advanced to second on a wild pitch before a fourth IBB put van der Linden on first. The Tribe was unable to build on the two-run lead as the game moved to the sixth and FSU moved within six outs of the school's seventh WCWS.
After retiring her 15th straight batter, a throwing error put a Duck on base for the first time since the first inning but van der Linden recorded the second out on a pop up to short and ended the top of the sixth on a ground out to second.
"I thought their defense was exceptional," said Arendsen. "They just made some great plays. Their shortstop made a couple really nice plays. They played great. They deserved the championship."
The Tribe went quietly in the home half of the sixth as they moved to the seventh and just three outs from a trip to Oklahoma City. Oregon sent the heart of its order to the plate in the inning and Jenn Poore got on board with a one out infield single but there was nothing doing versus van der Linden who was not going to let a second trip to the World Series slip through her fingers.
"Throughout the game, I didn't know what inning it was 'cause in my head I'd already had it in mind it didn't matter. I was just going to go until we were done," said van der Linden. "I just kind of had that mentality. Every pitch counted. There wasn't any batter in their line up that I could ease up on. They're all terrific hitters. I had to stay focused and my teammates played excellent defense behind me and I was so happy with that."

No.2 Cal And Hurler Kristina Thorson Set Down No. 4 FSU 4-2 At WCWS.
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - It may be a new Cal Bear team but the results are the same. The Golden Bears (51-11) continued their mastery over the fourth-ranked Seminoles (61-11) at the 2004 Women's College World Series as sophomore ace Kristina Thorson (28-3) was virtually unhittable. The Washington native held FSU to just two hits, it's fewest since the second game of the 2003 season, in leading Cal to a 4-2 opening round win at the World Series. The win was the 11th for Cal in 12 all-time meetings between the schools and it sent FSU into the loser's bracket where the Seminoles will face No. 7 Washington Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
"We didn't really hit well tonight at all," said FSU head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf. "Jessica (van der Linden) had the only two hits in the game and I told the team a few minutes ago, everybody else has got to pick it up with the bats. We were only down two runs. We are pretty confident that we can score two runs so I didn't feel we were ever out of the ball game, but we just didn't make it happen at the plate."
The Bears had the Tribe's number all night as Thorson struck out 12 batters and issued just one walk. Florida State had just one hit, van der Linden's two-run homer, through the first five innings and the only Seminole hitter to get a hit all night was the two-time first team All-American who singled again in the seventh to break Thorson's streak of 17 consecutive Seminole batters retired.
"Kristina (Thorson) really settled down after the first inning and I think van der Linden was the only person who ended up getting the two hits so I really give her a lot of credit for not only pitching a great game, but for her effort at the plate," said Cal head coach Diane Ninemire. "She is truly an outstanding player."
"I give her (Thorson) credit, she's a good pitcher," said FSU first baseman Beth Wade. "I think she's All-American. She did her job keeping us off balance pretty well. That's her job. We didn't make the adjustment as hitters."
On the hill, van der Linden (28-8) struck out nine and didn't issue a walk until the seventh inning but a three-run top of the third where she gave up four hits was her downfall. The Bears touched van der Linden for nine hits, the most she has allowed since 2002 when she gave up 13 in an 8-1 loss to Cal State Fullerton at the Kia Klassic.
"Being able to contribute my first at bat was really good," said van der Linden. "It wasn't my best pitching performance. I made some mistakes. They took advantage of that, and that's what you've got to do."
Cal got off to a great start as the Bears led off the game with a double and a bunt single on an attempted sacrifice. With runners on the corners, the Bears then swiped second putting two runners in scoring position with nobody away. van der Linden fanned the next two batters, and then escaped the threat on a fly out to shallow left field.
The Tribe couldn't have asked for a better start themselves versus Thorson. Natasha Jacob drew a one-out walk, the only one Thorson would issue all game, to start off the first bringing up newly named USA Softball player of the year van der Linden. The senior, who has homered just three times all year, bombed a Thorson offering over the fence in left center for the 2-0 lead. It was her fourth HR of the year and the fifth of her career. The HR raised van der Linden's RBI total to 55 on the year, which is a new FSU single season record.
The Bears broke through against van der Linden in the third as four hits, three singles and one triple, plated three runs and put Cal back on top 3-2. It was just the second time all season that van der Linden allowed two extra-base hits in a game.
"I thought we got in trouble in the first inning and Jess (van der Linden) got us out of it," said Graf. "Then she hit a two-run home run. At that point I thought we had our momentum going pretty good, but in the third they came back and scored three runs."
The bottom of the Bear line-up then extended the lead in the next inning. Light hitting Roni Rodrigues, who entered the game with a .191 batting average, launched a 1-0 van der Linden offering over the fence in center field. The two run cushion was more than enough for Thorson who allowed just one runner the rest of the way.
Florida State's next game versus Washington will be shown live on ESPN2, an Internet broadcast will be available at Seminoles.com and live stats can be accessed at the official website for NCAA Championships at ncaasports.com.
"We're going to play a really good team in Washington," said Graf. "We played them earlier this year. I think Washington is going to come out and try to prove the same thing we are. We're a better team than we (showed) tonight and I think Washington is going to try to prove that they're a better team than they (showed) tonight. It'll be a battle and both teams will play hard and give it everything they have."

van der Linden Shuts Out No. 7 Washington As FSU Advances At WCWS.
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - So far the 2004 World Series has been the Jessica van der Linden show as far as Florida State goes, but the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year finally got some help Saturday in an elimination game versus No. 7 Washington (40-19) at the 2004 WCWS. While van der Linden (29-8) went 2-for-3 at the plate and shutout Washington for just the fourth time all year, it was Tatiana George's two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning that won the game for No. 4 FSU (62-11). The Seminoles advance to the quarterfinals where they will face No. 3 LSU (55-11) tonight at 8:30 p.m. CT.
"We played a great game," said Dr. JoAnne Graf. "This was an elimination game, and we weren't quite ready to go home yet. I thought it was a great performance by Jess (van der Linden). They have a scary hitting lineup. They have hitters all the way up and down their lineup. Any one of their kids can put it out of the park. They did a good job attacking, we did a good job defending and pitching. It was a great game."
Coming into the Washington game, George hadn't recorded a home run since April 18 but a line-up change moved the shortstop up from sixth to fifth. The move paid off in a big way for coach Graf as George's hit was just the second by a Seminole not named van der Linden at the WCWS.
"We've been struggling the last couple of weekends with our four-through-eight hitters," said Graf. "We just wanted to shake it up a bit, and mix it up. Tatiana (George) was kind of stroking the ball and hitting it pretty solid, so we wanted to move her up and some other people down. I think everybody did their job that inning."
"One of my main goals starting today was to just be patient, let the ball get there, and just see it," said George. "I wasn't expecting a home run, but it was nice to make solid contact finally."
Speaking of van der Linden, the senior was huge once again for Florida State as she recorded her 20th shutout of the season, which is tied for second-most in FSU history. She struck out 10 batters and has now registered double digit K's in 19 games this season. In her 14 innings this season against Washington, van der Linden has 24 K's and just three walks and is 2-0.
"Today was more indicative of the level she (van der Linden) pitched at regionals," said Graf. "Against Cal she struggled a little bit. You get kind of spoiled sometimes by great players that you get used to them playing at an excellent level all the time. I think Jess (van der Linden) has done a super job to bounce back from the Cal game."
The Seminoles did put a runner on base in the first when van der Linden was plunked by UW ace Ashley Boek (29-13) but the Tribe couldn't advance her. Washington got its first hit of the game in the home half of the first when Aimee Minor doubled to the gap in left center. Sarah Hyatt followed with a single and Kristin Rivera was intentionally walked to load the bases. van der Linden fought back to get the second out with her first K of the game and then ended the threat with her 377th strikeout of the season.
"We got a couple of pop-ups to Tat (Tatiana George)," said van der Linden. "My defense played well behind me, and I was very excited to get out of it (the first). I definitely don't have my 'A' game with me right now. But it's coming."
Washington got its third hit of the game in the second and then sacrificed the runner over to second base. The three hits were more than the Huskies recorded in all seven innings the last time the teams met. An attempted sac put runners on the corners when van der Linden looked to third to get the lead runner and couldn't get to first in time. The fielder's choice put UW in business again but another strikeout and a pop to short ended the second with van der Linden keeping the shutout alive but living dangerously.
Boek set FSU down 1-2-3 in the top of the third and Washington put another runner on in the home half with a walk to All-America Kristen Rivera. Unlike the first two innings, UW couldn't move her off first as the Huskies stranded their sixth runner of the game and van der Linden continued to keep her Seminoles in the game.
The two-time first team All-America opened the fourth with a bloop single into right for FSU's first hit of the day against Boek. Lesley Palmer sacrificed van der Linden to second and then George took Rivera over the fence down the left field line putting the Tribe up 2-0. The homer was her sixth of the year and drove in her 25th and 26th runs as the junior tied her single season RBI record. Beth Wade followed with a single up the middle as the middle of the FSU order showed signs of breaking out of its 0-18 slump.
Washington looked to answer back in the bottom of the fourth as the Huskies led off with an infield single to short. A sacrifice moved Amanda Oleson to second with just one away before van der Linden got the second out as Rita Roach watched strike three. She then finished the inning with her fifth K of the game.
LaShaun Davis drew a one-out walk in the fifth but Washington turned a great double play to end the top of the inning and stay within striking distance. The Huskies sent their 2-3-4 hitters up in the bottom half of the fifth and van der Linden started the frame off with her sixth strikeout of the game. She then got a fly out to right field and the inning seemed to end on a ground out to third but an overthrow put a runner on second with still two away in the fifth.
Washington entered the sixth trailing 2-0 and was 0-13 on the season when trailing in the sixth inning. van der Linden tried to make the mountain a little harder to climb as she sent a one-out single up the middle moving her to 2-for-2 on the day and 4-for-5 at the WCWS. The Seminoles were unable to increase the lead though as FSU moved six outs from advancing in the 2004 WCWS.
The Huskies first two hitters in the sixth went down on a ground out to third and on their eighth K of the game. van der Linden then grazed the jersey of Courtney Jeffries putting a base runner on for the sixth straight inning but another great play by Kim Hoffer ended the inning.
van der Linden started the bottom of the seventh in familiar fashion as she fanned her ninth batter of the game as UW sent the top of the order to the plate. She then got her 10th K off the game when Minor watched strike three and a ground out to short put a close to the four-hit gem.

No.3 LSU Ends Softball's National Championship Dream With 2-1 Victory.
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - It seemed like the theme of the 2004 Women's College World Series for No. 4 Florida Sate was a lack of hitting and that ended up being the team's downfall in Sunday's quarterfinal. The Seminoles (62-12) could muster just four hits versus LSU ace Kristin Schmidt (37-6) as the Tigers (56-11) beat the Seminoles, 2-1, marking their second win over FSU this year, and eliminated the Tribe from the 2004 WCWS.
Florida State, which had one of its most prolific years at the plate entering the World Series, could muster just 10 hits in three games and the team struck out 27 times in 21 innings. The 10 hits overall were just one fewer than Cal and LSU each recorded in wins versus Florida State.
"We have to credit LSU," said FSU head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf. "They called a great game against us. I felt like with only giving up two runs to their team and getting out of a couple of jams, I felt pretty good because we hit their pitcher pretty good early in the game, but it seemed our hitting got worse as the game went on. I don't think we were really swinging at good pitches, letting a lot of good pitches get by. I thought they (LSU) did a great job."
When the Seminoles did get hits at the WCWS most came from All-American Jessica van der Linden who went 5-for-7 and accounted for half of the Seminoles' hits at the WCWS. Three of the 10 hits were home runs as the Tribe homered in every game at the World Series. FSU came to Oklahoma City 29-0 when it hit a home run but was 1-2 this weekend in that situation.
"Great softball game," said LSU head coach Yvette Girouard. "Kristen Schmidt, what can I say about her that I haven't said about her? All year long, she's just done a phenomenal job for us. We came out attacking in the first inning and I thought that set the tone for us. I guess our kids wouldn't be denied today. This was a great Florida State team and I think we took a little wind out of their sails, but then they battled right back."
LSU opened the first with a hit right away as Lauren Castle blooped a single over short and into shallow left field. All-American LaDonia Hughes then followed with a slap sac beating out the throw to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Camille Harris followed with a single through the middle to load the bases but an error on the throw to home allowed everybody to move up a base and put LSU in front 1-0. FSU starter Casey Hunter came back to get the next two outs via a grounder and a strike out before loading the bases on a hit by pitch. The Seminoles seemed to be out of the inning on the next play as Stephanie Hill pounded a ball into the ground right in front of home plate. Instead of just touching home and ending the inning on the force out, catcher Elisa Vasquez turned to first and Hughes barreled into the back of her and the umpires called everyone safe. After a protest from head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf, the umpires reversed their call and ruled a force out on the play wiping the run off the board and ending the inning.
"If they scored two or three in the first inning, I would have felt different, but I think the umpire, once she got convinced, made the right call," said Graf. "I felt pretty good at that time."
After all the controversy settled down in the top of the first, Veronica Wootson kept it simple in the home half of the inning. The freshman All-American led off the game with a bomb over the fence in left field. It was her team-leading eighth homer of the season and it was the second time this year that Wootson led off the game with a home run.
Hunter almost made it out of the second with just the third 1-2-3 inning for FSU in the entire WCWS but a wild pitch on a third strike allowed Lauren Castle to reach but she was called out when she left base early as LSU's would-be fifth hit landed in shallow left field. The play was ruled dead and the inning was over.
Schmidt struck out the side in the bottom of the second as the bottom of the Tribe line-up, which was 6-for-8 versus Schmidt in the first meeting, struggled early in the game.
The Tigers continued to pressure the Seminoles defense as Hughes chopped a hit down the third base line that looked to be heading foul but Kim Hoffer tried to field it and the ball hit off her glove and allowed Hughes to get all the way to second. The All-American couldn't advance off second on a shallow fly ball to center field for the first out but she did move up on the second out, which was a grounder back to the hill. Hughes ended the inning standing on third as a foul out to catcher Elisa Vasquez ended the top of the third.
Schmidt retired the first two Seminoles she faced in the third raising her streak to seven straight Seminoles retired before she issued a two-out walk to van der Linden but the Tribe left her sitting on first as Lesley Palmer popped out to the catcher to end the third.
For the 16th time in the last 18 innings FSU's opponent put a runner on base and for the third time in four innings versus LSU it came in the first batter of the inning. Leigh Ann Danos started the inning with a hit into right center and pinch Lauren Uhle was sacrificed to second. She then moved to third on a ground out to short but Hunter couldn't close down the threat as nine hole hitter Sara Fitzgerald singled through the left side plating the go-ahead run for the Tigers.
Once again FSU was unable to get the opponent out 1-2-3 as another error on what would have been the third out put a Tiger on base for the fourth time. Hunter did get out of it on the next pitch though as a ball was sent between the hurler's legs and shortstop Tatiana George fielded it and touched the base simultaneously to end the top of the fifth.
FSU again put the leadoff runner on base in the sixth as Hunter walked Danos to start the inning. Then a double moved the runners to second and third and ended the day for Hunter. That brought van der Linden in the circle as FSU tried to keep its National Championship dream alive. van der Linden lost the first batter she faced to load the bases as LSU threatened to break the game open. The USA Softball Player of the Year got the first out on her first K of the game. A huge gaff on the bases allowed van der Linden and FSU to get out of the mess as a pop to short got FSU its second out and the runner on third for some reason did not return to third where George threw to complete the double play and end the inning.
"I wasn't really on my game today," said Hunter. "I made a few mistakes and they took advantage of it as hitters should. I don't think I felt rusty, but of course, I wasn't on top of my game."
After she bailed FSU out of the bases loaded jam, van der Linden sent a one-out double into right center for her fifth hit of the WCWS. The All-American had five of the 10 hits for FSU at the World Series. The double was also the 10th of the year for van der Linden who now has 10 or more doubles all four years at Florida State. No other Seminole could figure out Schmidt though as the LSU senior fanned the next two batters to end the threat and move three outs from eliminating FSU from the WCWS.
After van der Linden K'ed Hughes for the first time in her last 76 plate appearances, another error by the Tribe defense put another Tiger runner on base. Leslie Klein then sent a slow roller to short that she beat out at first. Both runners moved up a base on a double steal before a foul out gave the Tribe the second out of the inning. Another foul out, this one to catcher BillieAnne Gay ended the threat as LSU stranded its 10th base runner of the game.
The Tribe tried to rally in the seventh as pinch hitter Katie Fricke singled with one away but once again Schmidt was dominant getting two more strikeouts to end the game.
"You can't say we didn't get our breaks and our opportunities," said Graf. "We just didn't put any pressure at all on their defense. We just did not put the ball in play. I thought Casey (Hunter) and Jess (van der Linden) did a great job.
"I don't feel like we hit consistently well up and down through our batting order as we have all year," continued Graf. "Again, you face better pitching when you get here sometimes than what you face during the season but we've got to get people on base. Ultimately that's what cost us. We didn't get enough runners on base."
