Seminole Softball Advances At NCAA Tournament With 2-1 Win Over Auburn.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - After watching the No. 1 and No. 2 seed's upset in the opening round of play at the 2002 NCAA Tallahassee Regional, the 21st-ranked Florida State softball team (50-12) avoided a similar fate with 2-1 win over No. 4 seed Auburn (38-26). The win moves Florida State to the next round where they will get a rematch with No. 5 seed and ACC foe Georgia Tech.
This was the third consecutive season FSU has opened the NCAA Tournament with a first round win and the victory gets the Tribe to the 50-win mark for the 15th time in program history. Senior Leslie Malerich pitched her 31st complete game of the year and notched 30 wins for the second time in the last three years. The loss sends Auburn into an elimination game where they will face the survivor of tonight's elimination game between No. 1 seed Florida Atlantic and No. 2 seed Alabama.
The game started inauspiciously for FSU with Malerich walking the first batter she faced. Malerich came back strong though as she retired the next three batters in order to retire the Tigers and send the game into the bottom of the first inning. After retiring lead-off hitter Tatiana George, Auburn hurler Kristen Keyes (21-11) issued a one-out walk to Shundra Colzie but she was thrown out trying to swipe second. Keyes then retired Jessica van der Linden on a long fly out to end the inning.
Malerich cruised through the top of the second as the Seminoles attempted to get something going in the bottom half of the frame. All-Southeast Region first teamer Brandi Stuart led off with a single that bounced over the shortstop and into center field. She was followed by Kimmy Carter who drew a walk giving FSU runners on first and second with no outs. Stuart took off from second looking for her 53rd steal of the season but Tiger catcher Deni Zeigler once again gunned down a would-be Seminole stealer for the first out of the inning. Keyes then got the next two batters to end the Seminole threat.
Auburn looked for the game's first run in the third as a lead-off single and a sac bunt gave them a runner in scoring position with just one out. Malerich recorded the second out of the frame before surrendering a hit to second baseman Kelly Sutton. Lindsey Chitwood attempted to score on the shallow hit to left but van der Linden fired a perfect shot to the plate and Carter tagged her out to end the inning.
Keyes struck out the side in the third and Auburn led off the fourth with back-to-back hits, a double and a single. The Tigers next loaded the bases on an infield single as they looked to take a lead with no outs in the inning. Malerich retired the next batter and then got a fielder's choice scoring a run to put Auburn up 1-0 but leaving the Tigers with two outs. The hurler struck out Lindsey Chitwood to end the top of the fourth.
Florida State tried to get the run back in the bottom of the inning as van der Linden drew a walk on five pitches bringing up All-American candidate Stuart and her 44 RBIs. Stuart drew FSU's fourth walk of the game and she and van der Linden were moved to third on a Carter sacrifice bunt. After Keyes struck out Wade for the second time on the day, senior Monique Marier sent a two-out, two-run single through the left side of the infield putting the Tribe in front 2-1.
Malerich responded after the Tigers scored to retire the side in order in the fifth bringing up Auburn's No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 hitters in the top of the sixth. Malerich got the first Tiger to pop out to short before allowing a one-out bloop single up the middle to No. 4 hitter Sara Dean. Dean was the first Auburn batter to reach safely in the last six at bats against the right-hander. The Tigers were unable to capitalize though as Malerich got the next two hitters to fly out as they moved within three outs of the team's third straight win in an NCAA Regional opener.
The Garnet and Gold went in order in bottom of the sixth as the Tigers came up looking for the tying or winning run in their final at bat. Malerich started off with two straight K's before losing the lead-off batter on a walk but Carter picked her off on first with a strong throw and Stuart blocking the bag. With one down, Malerich continued to cruise as she got the next two hitters she faced to end the game and advance the Tribe into the winner's bracket.

ACC Rival Georgia Tech Downs FSU Softball At NCAA Tournament.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - In 15 trips to the NCAA Softball Tournament, the 21st-ranked Seminole softball team had never faced an ACC school and after Friday's 7-0 loss to Georgia Tech they hope they won't ever have to again. The Yellow Jackets (51-16) capitalized on three FSU errors in handing the Tribe (50-18) their worst loss since an 8-1 defeat at the hands of Cal State Fullerton March 15. It has been 97 games since the Garnet and Gold have lost by more than seven runs dating back to April 9, 2000 when Florida State lost 9-0 to Southern Mississippi in Tallahassee, FL.
This is just the sixth time FSU has been held scoreless in 2002 and two of the six have come against the Yellow Jackets. The Seminoles have now lost three of their last four games and four of their last six since facing Florida Atlantic in the last series of the regular season.
After Jessica Sallinger (27-7) retired the Seminoles in order in the first, Tech got to work in the bottom of the frame loading the bases off Jessica van der Linden (16-6) with no outs on two walks and a double. Catcher Lindsay Wood then singled to shallow left field to score the game's first run as the bases remained full with no one out. The Jackets added to the lead on two infield errors as they moved out to a 3-0 lead and still no outs in the inning. After Leslie Malerich came in to relieve van der Linden, the Seminoles got a force out at home, a pop out to the pitcher before another run scored on a shallow hit to left field. With Georgia Tech now up 4-0, Malerich got the last out of the inning on a pop to second.
The Yellow Jackets added to their 4-0 lead in the fourth as they utilized another FSU error and a walk to put two runners on with one away. Malerich got the next batter on a deep fly to left before Tara Knudsen lined a shot into left field scoring Georgia Tech's fifth run of the afternoon. She was followed by Lindsay Wood who sent Tech's fourth double of the game into the gap in right center clearing the bases to put the Yellow Jackets in front 7-0.
Florida State could muster just three hits on the day with two coming off ACC Rookie of the Year Sallinger. Shundra Colzie, Jessica van der Linden and Brandi Stuart were they only Seminoles to have any success at the plate as the team's overall batting average fell to .171 in two games at the 2002 NCAA Tallahassee Regional and the Tribe is hitting just .193 in the ACC and NCAA Tournaments. Freshman hurler Casey Hunter closed the game out with two innings of shutout ball.

FSU Softball Needs Eight Innings To Advance To Championship Game.
Seminoles Meet ACC Rival Georgia Teach With An Invitation To The WCWS On The
Line.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Florida State softball entered NCAA Regional play Sunday knowing they needed to win three straight games to keep their College World Series dreams alive and they took care of step one. The 21st-ranked Seminoles (51-18) needed eight innings but eliminated UTC (44-15) on an error with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth. The 1-0 win sent FSU into the regional championship for the third consecutive season where they will face ACC rival Georgia Tech for the fifth time this season.
Chattanooga put two of the first three hitters on base in the top half of the first on an infield single and a walk off Tribe starter Leslie Malerich (31-12). Jada Pescatore then lined a shot to first baseman Beth Wade who snagged the shot and then stepped on the bag to double off Melissa Ramierez to end the inning.
The Lady Mocs threatened again in the second as they put runners on second and third with just one down. Malerich once again fought back and got a foul out and a strike out looking to end the Chattanooga rally and keep the game even at 0-0.
Second baseman Dana Reed once again got UTC off to a good start in the third inning as she laced a one-out double down the left field line. Malerich, a senior from Merrillville, IN, shut down the threat as quickly as it started. She got the next batter she faced to line out to third and then got Pescatore to pop out to end the inning.
Starter Awbrey Winckler (18-8) held the Seminoles hitless through three innings before right fielder Shundra Colzie laced a single into right field. Jessica van der Linden sacrificed her to third before the Lady Mocs intentionally walked All-American candidate Brandi Stuart. With two outs and two on, FSU was unable to draw first blood as Winckler got Kimmy Carter to pop out to second.
The Lady Mocs put another runner in scoring position in the fifth as a bloop single over the head of Seminole third baseman Robyn Larson and a sacrifice bunt landed Ashleigh Herman on second with one out. After a walk to Grace Pickett and a fielder's choice, UTC's leading hitter came to the plate. Ramierez, who was hitting .404 on the season entering the game, flew out weakly to left field to end the Lady Moc threat.
The Seminoles mounted a threat of their own with the bottom of the order in the fifth. Elisa Velasco sent a one out single through the left side and Beth Wade sent her to second on a sac bunt. Pinch-hitter Jackie Hirschfeld drew a walk to put runners on first and second but Winckler worker her way out of the jam as both teams continued to search for the game's first run.
Chattanooga came right back with a rally of their own using a single and two FSU errors to put runners on first and second with two outs. As had been the case all afternoon, Malerich bailed her team out by retiring Herman looking at a called third strike and ending the inning sending the game to the bottom of the sixth.
The game moved into the eighth with neither team being able to get a runner across the plate. Malerich seemed to get stronger and stronger as the game went on. The senior set the Lady Mocs down in order in the seventh and eighth after retiring the side 1-2-3 just once in the previous six innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, FSU got the lead-off hitter on for the first time in the game as Hirschfeld sent a shot to short which took a bad hop and allowed the third baseman to reach safely. After Hirschfeld was replaced by pinch runner Shandra Colzie, Tatiana George drew a walk to put the Seminoles on first and second with no outs. Chattanooga ace Beth Alexander replaced Winckler in hopes of getting out of the jam and sending the game to the ninth. Shundra Colzie reached safely on what was intended to be a sacrifice bunt which loaded the bases with no one down for van der Linden. With the outfield drawn way in, the sophomore popped out to second for the first out of the frame. All-everything second baseman Stuart next came up trying to give FSU its second win of the regional. The All-Southeast first teamer missed a squeeze bunt attempt and Shandra Colzie was caught off of third as she was running on the play. Chattanooga catcher Herman threw to Ramierez who dropped the ball allowing Colzie to come home with the game-winner.

Seminole Softball Downs Tech To Force Final Game For World Series Trip.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The Seminole softball team was one strike away from going to the 2001 Women's College World Series and they were just two outs away from getting the opportunity to play for a trip to Oklahoma City, OK Sunday evening. The Seminoles (52-18-0) were up 2-0 on Georgia Tech (52-17-0) in the bottom of the seventh before a two-run rally brought the Jackets back to even things and send the game into extra innings where the Seminoles went on to win the game.
Monique Marier had her second game-winning hit of the 2002 NCAA Regionals as she laced a RBI double to the warning track in right in the top of the ninth to put FSU ahead. Senior Leslie Malerich (32-12) closed out the game as she pitched her second complete game on elimination Sunday for Florida State. The All-American allowed just one earned run in the two victories as she gave FSU the chance to play for its sixth Women's College World Series this evening against the Jackets. In the process, FSU handed Jessica Sallinger (28-8) her first loss since April 18th.
Unlike the previous two meetings with Georgia Tech, FSU jumped on ACC Rookie of the Year Sallinger in the top of the first inning. Florida State, with a re-worked batting order, struck first and scored just the second run off Sallinger in the 2002 NCAA Tallahassee Regional. Shundra Colzie walked to lead things off and senior Kimmy Carter, hitting in the No. 2 spot for the first time all season, sacrificed Colzie to second. A Jessica van der Linden ground out to second moved Colzie to third with two outs in the frame. All-American candidate Brandi Stuart then came through with a huge hit as her two-out RBI double down the left field line scored Colzie and put FSU up 1-0. The RBI was the 45th of the year for Stuart as she continues to add to her record for the most doubles ever amassed in three seasons at FSU.
Starting pitcher Malerich got into a little bit of trouble in the bottom of the inning as Tech attempted a first inning rally of its own. The Jackets loaded the bases with two outs in a bid to get right back into the game but the senior hurler shutdown the threat as she struck out Sara Wissman on three straight pitches to retire the side.
Both teams collected a hit in the second with Carter's two-out double, which just missed leaving the park by a couple of feet, being the most dangerous. Tech sophomore Tara Knudsen also got a two-bagger when she hit a soft shot down the right field line that was just deep enough to allow her to get to second.
Despite the hits, the game remained 1-0 into the top of the fourth as the Tribe once again attempted to add to its 1-0 lead. Stuart drew a lead-off walk and Elisa Velasco laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Stuart to second. The junior took off on contact and didn't stop until she launched into a head-first slide into third beating the tag. The Cerritos, CA native was called out on the exact same play during the ACC Tournament on what most seemed to consider a very close call. The gamble paid off this time as Stuart broke for home as the Jackets were throwing to first to get the next batter out. Katie Donovan threw home to try and get Stuart but the throw sailed over the catcher's head putting FSU up 2-0.
Tech staged another comeback attempt in the bottom of the fifth as they put together back-to-back singles with one out. With runners on first and second and power hitter Lindsay Wood at the plate Malerich once again came through with a little help from a great defensive play by new starter at third Robyn Larson and Stuart. Wood smashed a line drive at Larson who corralled the shot and threw to Stuart at second for the inning-ending double play. Stuart, who ran over to cover the bag, had to reach high up to get the throw but hauled it in to kill the Yellow Jacket rally.
With a 2-0 advantage in the sixth, the Garnet and Gold went in search for more runs as van der Linden sent a one out shot to center field but Sallinger was once again equal to the task. She retired the next two batters to get out of the top of the frame still trailing 2-0. As was the case most of the day, Tech once again tried to crawl back into the game this time in the bottom of the sixth. Two singles and a ground out put the Yellow Jackets on second and third with two down in the inning. Tech brought in pinch hitter Tasha Waugh to face Malerich but the senior Seminole got her to pop up to Stuart standing on top of second base and leaving GT with just three outs to avoid a winner take all game.
With just one more chance to avoid a second game, the Jackets started things off with an infield single to short and a bloop single into left flied. With two runners on and nobody out, Malerich got Knudsen to hit into a fielder's choice with FSU cutting down the lead runner. Wood then singled to left scoring Tech's first run of the game and slicing FSU's lead to 2-1. An error on the next play loaded the bases for Tech with just one down in the frame. A sacrifice fly to right by Wissman tied the game and a Malerich walk loaded the bases moving the World Series clinching run to third but Malerich got a fly out to shallow center ending the Tech rally and sending the contest to the eighth.
The Jackets had posted a 7-2 record in extra inning contests while the Tribe had gone 3-3 including an eight-inning win earlier in the day versus UTC. Florida State went quietly in the top of the eighth but Georgia Tech got a runner on by virtue of a one-out single through the left side. Donovan followed her with her fourth single of the game as the stage was set for Knudsen with one out and runners on first and second. The Jacket's top-hitter struck out swinging leaving Malerich one out away from getting out of the jam. Wood, who was already 1-for-2 on the day with an RBI, tapped a check swing pitch that slowly rolled down the line and ended up loading the bases when she beat out the play at first. Malerich finished the threat though as she got Jamie Frost to ground out to first and end the inning.
Florida State tried to make something happen in the ninth with their 3, 4 and 5 hitters due to come to the plate. Van der Linden started things off by drawing a lead-off walk but Sallinger bounced back and got Stuart swinging for the first out of the inning. Velasco followed with a hot shot right at Sallinger but the freshman couldn't handle the ball and both runners reached safely. That brought up Marier, who had the game-winning RBI versus Auburn in the first game of the regional, who sent a deep shot to the warning track in right field that landed over the head of Soraya Reddick. The double scored van der Linden and put runners on second and third with just one out. Sallinger showed why she was the ACC Tournament MVP as she bounced back to retire the side and move the game to the bottom of the ninth with FSU up 3-2.
Malerich got the first out of the inning but Tech began to claw its way back when Reddick laced a warning track double to left field to put a runner in scoring position with just one out. Tatiana George got the next out when she climbed the ladder to reel in a soft liner that was headed to the outfield.

WORLD SERIES HERE WE COME! FSU MAKES ITS SIXTH TRIP TO OKLAHOMA CITY.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Win three games in one afternoon and you get to go to the Women's College World Series. That was the daunting task facing the 21st-ranked Seminole softball team (53-18-0) when they arrived at the park on Sunday and they did just that. Florida State completed its improbable run to the school's sixth World Series by downing No. 5 seed Georgia Tech 6-1 in the final game at the 2002 NCAA Region 8 tournament. The win was FSU's second of the day over the Yellow Jackets (53-18).
Florida State was once again led by NCAA Regional Most Valuable Player Leslie Malerich (33-12). The senior All-American picked up her third consecutive win on the day en route to MVP honors. She threw 320 pitches and allowed just two earned runs while posting a 0.67 ERA in going 3-0.
Just as they did in the first game, FSU jumped on top of Tech and freshman ace Jessica Sallinger 28-9). After the starter got the first out in the bottom of the first, Kimmy Carter singled to center field. Jessica van der Linden ripped a triple to center field, her fifth of the year, scoring Carter and putting the Tribe up 1-0. After the Jackets intentionally walked Stuart and she stole her 53rd base of the season, Sallinger came back to get the next two batters to limit the damage.
The Seminoles looked to build on their lead in the second as they singled and drew two walks. With two outs, van der Linden came to the plate. The sophomore, who was 1-for-3 against Sallinger in the first game, lofted a bloop double along the left field line that scored Tatiana George and Shundra Colzie to give FSU a 3-0 lead. The three runs were as many as FSU scored in nine innings in the previous game. The Garnet and Gold looked to add even more as the Jackets intentionally walked Brandi Stuart for the second time to once again load the bases. Elisa Velasco then chased an outside fastball for the third strike and third out of the inning. The three earned runs were the most given up by Sallinger since April 20, 2002.
As the game entered the bottom of the fourth, FSU once again looked to build on their 3-0 lead. Shundra Colzie led the inning off with a bunt single and Carter sacrificed her over to second bringing up van der Linden for an opportunity at her fourth RBI of the game. Sallinger retired the sophomore for the first time in the game and Tech went on to intentionally walk Stuart for the third time. Florida State couldn't capitalize though as Sallinger retired the side and ended the threat.
After pounding out 15 hits in a 3-2 loss to FSU in the early game, Georgia Tech didn't get its first hit of the championship game off Malerich until there were two outs in the third inning. Another Yellow Jacket didn't reach base until an error with two outs in fourth allowed Soraya Reddick to get on base. The Jackets were able to touch Malerich up for a run in the fifth as Sara Wissman sent a solo shot over the fence in right to bring the Jackets within two runs at 3-1. After a Tasha Waugh double, van der Linden came in to relieve Malerich. The senior All-American pitched 21 consecutive innings Sunday and allowed just two earned runs and left the game with a chance to move to 3-0 on the day. Van der Linden closed the door on Tech sending the game to the bottom of the fifth with the Tribe holding on to a 3-1 lead.
In the sixth, Monique Marier started things off with a single up the middle and pinch runner Skyla Cox came in to run at first. After Beth Wade drew a walk, pinch hitter Jackie Hirschfeld reached on an error to load the bases with just one out in the frame. After Sallinger induced a pop out, the team's RBI leader Carter laced a triple to deep left field clearing the bases and extending FSU to a 6-1 lead with Tech down to just six outs. The three RBIs moved Carter into first place all-time in FSU history with 133 in her four-year career and ended any hope the Jackets had of advancing to the school's first-ever WCWS.

FSU Softball Stuns No. 1 UCLA In Extra Innings At 2002 World Series.
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - For the first time in more than 10 years, the No. 1 seed in the Women's College World Series lost its first game of the tournament as the eighth seeded Florida State softball team (54-18) downed top-ranked UCLA (54-8) 2-1 in nine innings. The win over the Bruins sent UCLA to just the program's second-ever opening round loss in 18 trips to the Women's College World Series.
Senior Monique Marier hit a game-winning home run in the top of the ninth and Leslie Malerich picked up her fifth consecutive postseason win as FSU won just its second WCWS opener in six tries. The win was the program's first-ever versus a team ranked No. 1 in the nation and moves the eighth-seeded Tribe into the winner's bracket where they will face the winner of Oklahoma/Cal tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. EST.
"It was obviously a tough, tough opening game," said head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf. "I had a lot of confidence that the longer the game went the better chance we would have of upsetting them. I think the kids came through. Big, big hit by Mo (Monique Marier) with the big home run that really propelled us and good defense at the end that pulled us through the game."
The ninth-inning blast was Marier's ninth of the year and she has now accounted for seven of FSU's last 11 bombs. It was also her third game-winning RBI in the Garnet and Gold's last five wins as she had the hit that downed Auburn and Georgia Tech in the NCAA Regionals paving FSU's way to the College World Series. "I guess I just keyed in after taking a good cut at the high rise ball," said Marier. "When I was running to first I thought it was going to go foul and it was like, 'oh nuts'."
Malerich was once again masterful inside the circle. After throwing 320 pitches and winning three games on championship Sunday at the 2002 Tallahassee Regional, the Merrillville, IN native held the Bruins to just one run after UCLA averaged almost six runs per game coming into the World Series. She picked up her 34th win and 34th complete game of the season as she moved within one victory of tying her career high with 35 wins.
"I wasn't nervous and I think that's what was running through my mind just like regionals," said Malerich. "Knowing that they were an excellent team and that that they can pull through anything. I just knew I had to hit my spots. I'm just putting the ball where it needs to go and my teammates are helping me out."
The Seminoles got the lead-off batter on in the first inning off of UCLA first team All-American Keira Goerl (31-4). Shundra Colzie reached on a throwing error by Bruin third baseman Toria Anuela but the Tribe was unable to sacrifice her to second as UCLA cut down the lead-off runner on the next two plays.
The Bruins answered immediately as shortstop Natasha Watley singled and stole second putting a runner in scoring position with no one out in the bottom of the first. Malerich got the next hitter, Amanda Freed to ground out before walking Tairia Mims to put runners on first and second. Malerich got the second out of the frame by retiring UCLA's top hitter Stacey Nuveman on a pop up to Brandi Stuart in shallow right field. The Bruins were able to get on the board though as Claire Sua sent a slow roller up the middle that bounced off the second base bag and scored Watley with the games first run.
With the Garnet and Gold down 1-0, Goerl rolled through the top half of the second inning getting the side in order on two strike outs and a ground out. Malerich matched her by setting the Bruins down in order also. Newly named first team All-American Stuart recorded all-three putouts on pop-ups to second. With the three putouts in the inning, Stuart recorded four of FSU's first six putouts in the game.
The Seminoles recorded their first hit of the game in the third as Colzie sent a 1-1 offering from Groel up the middle. Florida State was unable to advance Colzie though after the two out single as the UCLA sophomore hurler recorded her fifth K of the game to end FSU's half of the inning.
After Watley reached for the second time in the game and stole her second base on the day in the bottom half of the frame, Malerich once again knuckled down and kept FSU within a run. She induced two more pop outs, her fifth and sixth of the game, and a ground out to send the game into the fourth with FSU's No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 hitters coming to the plate.
Stuart, after recording four of FSU's nine putouts defensively, got things going offensively as she sent a one-out single to right and was sacrificed over to second by Tatiana George. As she has done all season long, Stuart made things happen for FSU on the base paths. The junior stole her 54th base of the year as she swiped third and came around to score when Nuveman tried to nail Stuart but her throw sailed over the head of Watley. Stuart advanced home to tie the game as she scored her 63rd run of the year and moved into second for the most runs scored in a single season at FSU.
The Bruins tried to regain the lead in the bottom of the fourth as they advanced Stephanie Ramos, who drew a lead-off walk, to third with two outs. Malerich once again kept UCLA at bay leaving Ramos standing just 60 feet away as the game moved in to the fifth inning.
Goerl came out strong in the fifth as she struck out the side and picked up her 10th K of the game. The Bruins looked to build on that in the bottom of the fifth as Watley once again got on base on an infield hit and was sacrificed over to second as UCLA searched for the lead run. Mims followed with a single to shallow left field moving Watley to third with just one out and Nuveman coming to the plate. The NCAA's career home run leader with 89 bombs in her career was intentionally walked to load the bases. Florida State got a force at home on the next play leaving UCLA with two outs and the bases still full. Malerich got her first strikeout of the game to end the Bruin threat as Casey Hiraiwa watched strike three.
Colzie led off the sixth with her second consecutive hit and she became the first FSU player to record two hits in a game versus the Bruins in more than 10 years. Florida State was unable to capitalize though as the opener of the 2002 College World Series moved into the bottom of the sixth with the game still tied 1-1.
The game entered a weather delay in the bottom of the sixth as lightning began to strike beyond the outfield at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium. The delay, which began at 11:58 a.m., ended 36 minutes later with Toria Auela drawing UCLA's fifth walk of the game. The Seminoles erased Auela off the bases when catcher Kimmy Carter threw down to first and Stuart blocked the bag picking off the Bruin base runner for the second out of the inning. After a walk and Watley's fourth hit of the game, Malerich retired the side on a shallow fly out to center field.
As the game moved into the seventh still tied 1-1, FSU lead off with a base runner for just the third time all game but for the second consecutive inning. The Tribe was unable to advance George as a fielder's choice cut down the lead runner. With pinch runner Skyla Cox on first, senior pinch hitter Jackie Hirschfeld drew her 12th walk in 21 at bats putting two Seminoles on base for the first time all game. The runners moved to second and third on a Elisa Velasco ground out bringing up pinch hitter Bryttani Lindheim. Goerl got Lindheim to pop out to second with the potential winning run unable to advance from third.
The Bruins went into the seventh with their No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 hitters coming up with a chance to win the game. Malerich, who allowed just six hits through six innings, got Mims to line out to Beth Wade for the first out of the seventh bringing up Nuveman. Malerich got her to ground out to second keeping her hitless on the afternoon with two walks. Sua drew a two-out walk as UCLA continued to avoid extra innings against the No. 8 seed. Ramos then sent a shot into the gap in left with Sua running on contact. Jessica van der Linden tracked the ball from her center field position and laid out to make a diving stab to send the game into the eighth inning.
Goerl got the Seminoles in order in the top of the frame as she retired Colzie, Carter and van der Linden on two ground outs and her 11th strikeout of the game. Malerich started the bottom of the frame off by inducing two ground outs to shortstop George before walking No. 9 hitter Monique Mejia. Malerich ended the threat when she retired Watley for the first time on the day as she snared a line drive right back at her. Through eight full innings, the senior allowed just three of UCLA's batters to reach via a hit.
The Seminoles looked like they were going to go quietly in the ninth as Gorel retired the first two batters on just four pitches and she moved out to a 0-2 advantage on Marier. The senior sent a shot over the fence down the left field line as the 190-foot blast just curved around the foul pole giving FSU its first lead of the game. It was the Clearwater, Fla. native's ninth home run of the season and she has hit seven of FSU's last 11 homers.
Malerich came out looking to close out her fifth straight postseason victory and opened up by getting Freed to line out softly to short. After Mims reached on an error, the winning run came to the plate in Nuveman. The senior drew her third walk of the game putting runners on first and second with one down. Sua next grounded out to short moving the runners up a base and moving the Seminoles one out away from the school's first ever win over the No. 1 seed in the World Series. The Bruins looked as if they were going to tie the game with two outs as Ramos sent a soft liner to left field that was threatening to drop in front of Marier. The hero from the top of the ninth laid out and just wedged her glove between the grass and the ball to make the final out and secure the win.

Seminole Softball Falls To Cal 1-0 At College World Series.
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - For the eighth time in nine tries, the Cal Golden Bears got the best of the 21st-ranked Seminoles (54-19), this time it was in the second round of the 2002 Women's College World Series. The Bears (54-19) only run of the day came off a solo blast from a batter that was called out just two pitches earlier by the third base umpire before given new life when the ump behind the plate reversed the call. The home run just two pitches later by Chelsea Spencer turned out to be the lone run of the game.
"That was really tough," said third baseman Becky Brock. "One second you have retired a tough batter and you are one out closer to getting out of the inning and two seconds later she hits the game-winning home run. I thought it was a fair ball that we threw her out on but I wasn't sure. It was just heart-breaking."
Yesterday's hero on the mound for FSU, Leslie Malerich (34-13) was dominate again Friday as she scattered five hits over seven innings and recorded two strikeouts. For the 12th time in her last 12 appearances, FSU failed to score more than three runs for her as the team was shutout for just the seventh time all season.
"I felt pretty good but I still feel pretty shot from pitching three games Sunday," said Malerich. "I thought I did pretty well except for the one pitch. I probably left it up a little more than I would have liked but it wasn't straight down the middle or anything. That was the only pitch that hurt me. I always seem to get a little tired in the middle innings and that was no different today.
"My whole team and coaching staff is behind me because they know we haven't really been hitting that well lately so the pressure is on me to be perfect. They keep telling me how great of a job I am doing. I don't think I did good enough though. I take a lot of the blame because it was my pitch that went over the fence."
The senior hurler came out in the top of the first and struck out the second batter she faced after recording just one K in nine innings in Thursday's upset of top-ranked and first-seeded UCLA. Malerich went on to set the Bears down in order in the top of the first.
Florida State came up to get its first look at Cal ace Jocelyn Forest (26-12) and the right-hander lived up to her reputation setting the Tribe down in order in the bottom of the inning. Cal looked to get something going in the second as Malerich pitched around power-hitter Veronica Nelson and issuing the first walk of the game. After Cal replaced her with a pinch runner, which they can only do once per game, the senior hurler and the FSU defense closed out the inning in dominant fashion. Malerich retired the second batter of the inning on a ground ball up the middle as she cut down the lead runner. First baseman Beth Wade took care of the rest as the redshirt-sophomore snagged a liner headed down the right field line and stepped on the bag for the double play.
The Tribe looked to get on the board in the bottom of the second as Tatiana George was hit by a pitch and moved over to second on Monique Marier's sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Beth Wade looked to put the Garnet and Gold up as she sent a deep shot to left field. The potential homer curved foul and Forest worked her way out of the inning with the score still 0-0.
In the top of the third, Malerich faced the minimum amount of batters for the third time in three innings. She induced a ground out to start off the inning and then corralled a short pop to the mound to retire the second batter. Malerich then got Kristen Bayless swinging for her second strike out of the game and through three innings she had already doubled her K total from her opening day victory over UCLA.
Cal lead-off hitter Kaleo Eldredge got the first hit of the day on a soft shot up the middle. The Bears put together back-to-back singles as last year's NCAA Tallahassee Regional hero Kristen Morley beat out an infield single to put runners on first and second with no one out. The Bears tried to move the runners up as Eldredge took off for third but Kimmy Carter gunned her down as shortstop Tatiana George completely blocked the bag on the attempted steal and applied the tag. Malerich retired the second hitter as Beth Wade snared a soft liner in foul territory bringing Nelson to the plate. The Seminoles intentionally walked the clean-up hitter and elected to face Courtney Scott with two on and two down in the fourth. An error by the FSU defense loaded the bases as Malerich tried to bail her teammates out. The pitcher induced a ground out and George threw out the runner at third to retire the side and end the threat.
The Seminoles broke up the Forest no hitter in the bottom of the frame. The Bear ace retired the first two batters she saw with one coming on a smash to first that Jessica van der Linden almost beat out. All-American first team selection Brandi Stuart then laid down a perfect bunt towards first and easily beat the throw to give FSU its first base runner of the day.
Cal jumped out to the lead in the fifth when shortstop Chelsea Spencer led-off the inning with a deep shot over the left field fence. The homer almost never came to pass as Spencer seemed to be thrown out on a great defensive play by Becky Brock two pitches earlier. The home plate umpire called the ball foul after Spencer was already heading to the dugout when the umpire gave her new life and she took advantage of it. The home run was just the second allowed in 60 innings of postseason play by Malerich and the last home run she allowed was in the Regional Championship when FSU defeated Georgia Tech 6-1 to earn a ticket to the Women's College World Series.
The Garnet and Gold were unable to answer the Golden Bear score in the bottom of the fifth as the game moved to the sixth and Cal once again led the inning off with a hit for the third inning in a row. Candace Harper moved to second on a ground out but Malerich got out of the inning on a great defensive play at third by Brock and then getting an out on a ball sent right back to the mound to retire the side.
Florida State, down to its last six outs, sent pinch hitter Elisa Velasco to the plate to start things off in the sixth. The sophomore laced the first pitch she saw into the corner into left field but Cal had her played perfectly as leftfielder Bayless snared the shot retiring Velasco. After Forest got Colzie on a line out to third, Carter hit another Forest offering very hard to center but the Golden Bears were in perfect position again to make the out and end the frame.
Malerich set the Bears down one, two, three in the top of the seventh bringing up the heart of the FSU order in the bottom of the frame with just the Tribe down to its last three outs. Van der Linden started things off with a ground out to first that she nearly beat out on a head first slide. That brought up Stuart who had FSU's only hit on the day in the fourth. The junior from Cerritos, CA blasted a shot to short that Spencer was unable to handle for her second hit of the day and just the team's second hit off of Forest. The Bears got George swinging bringing up Marier with the chance to win her second straight game for the Seminoles but Forest was just too much for FSU to handle as she got Marier to ground out ending the game.
"I just saw the ball today and tried to hit it well," said Stuart. "I knew from seeing her (Jocelyn Forest) last year that I was going to have to be very disciplined today and have a lot of patience. Jocelyn (Forest) is a great pitcher and I am not going to take that away from her. Do I think she is beatable? Yes. We just have to be more patient the next time around."

Florida State Softball Reaches Final Four With 4-3 Win Over Huskers.
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - For the first time since 1990, the Florida State softball team has advanced into the final four at the Women's College World Series as they downed Nebraska (50-14) 4-3 in an elimination game Saturday night. The win sends the Seminoles (55-19) into the semifinals where they will face defending national champion Arizona at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 26. The Tribe's 55th win of the year marks the fifth most in a single season in school history.
The Seminoles utilized a big fifth inning as they scored all four of their runs on four hits and three Nebraska errors. Kimmy Carter's two RBI single and Jessica van der Linden's RBI double were the key hits which drove in three of the four runs. Leslie Malerich was a warrior once again as she equaled a career best with her 35th win and became just the second FSU pitcher to ever win two games in a Women's College World Series. She is now 6-1 in the NCAA Regional and World Series.
Nebraska ace Peaches James (22-9) opened up the first by snaring a Shundra Colzie liner up the middle that looked like it was headed for the outfield. The leaping grab brought co-captain Kimmy Carter to the plate who James retired on her first strikeout of the night. Van der Linden next sent a deep drive to right that looked like it might make it over the 190-foot fence in right but just didn't have enough to get out of the park as FSU went down 1-2-3 to open the game.
The Huskers got off to a good start after FSU starter and ace Malerich (35-13) opened up the game going 0-2 on Nebraska lead-off hitter Kim Ogee. After Lisa Wangler sacrificed Ogee to second, regional No. 7 MVP Amanda Bucholz came up with a runner in scoring position and just one out. Bucholz drew a walk on a 3-2 count giving Nebraska runners on first and second. The senior fought back to get the next batter on a pop up and then recorded her first strikeout of the game to end the Husker threat.
First team All-American Brandi Stuart got the Seminoles going in the top of the second as she laced a double off the wall in left field. After Stuart was sacrificed to third by Tatiana George, the Seminoles tried to manufacture a run on a squeeze bunt but Monique Marier's attempt didn't get far enough away from the plate and Husker catcher Amber Burgess picked it up and tagged out Stuart as she was coming home with the potential lead run.
Nebraska once again got off to a good start in the second as pitcher James led things off by singling through the right side of the infield. Florida State and Malerich bounced back by cutting down the lead runner on an attempted sacrifice and then got the runner on first out when she left early. Malerich then recorded her second strikeout of the game to end the inning and keep the game tied at 0-0.
With two down in the top of the third, Colzie drew the first walk of the game off of James as she watched a 3-1 pitch sail high sending her to first. That brought up FSU's leading RBI producer in senior catcher Carter. The co-captain came into the game with 50 RBIs on the year. Before Carter got a chance to drive in Colzie, the junior college transfer took of and stole her 13th base of the season. With the count 3-2, Carter smashed a hard hit liner to deep left field that Wangler was in perfect position to make the catch and end the Seminole uprising.
For the third straight inning, the Cornhuskers got their lead-off hitter on base as Malerich issued her second free pass of the game bringing up Ogee who singled in her first at bat. The senior lost Ogee on a 3-2 pitch to issue her second walk of the game and put Nebraska in great position with two on and nobody out. Wangler advanced the runners on a ground out to second putting both Nebraska base runners in scoring position with just one out. Bucholz next sent a deep drive to left the Monique Marier hauled in but the shot was deep enough to score the first run of the game on the sac fly.
The game moved to the top of the fourth with the Huskers up 1-0 and the heart of the Seminole order coming up to the plate. Van der Linden got things started with her first hit of the World Series as she drove a ball just to the left of James who got a glove on it but could not handle the smash putting the sophomore at first. James then got Stuart to foul out to the catcher for the first out of the inning and George then reached via a fielder's choice with van der Linden getting cut down on her way to second. James then retired the side as she corralled Marier's pop out.
Malerich cruised through the fourth picking up her third strikeout while setting the Huskers down in order for the second time in the game. Malerich's third K matched her total for the entire World Series.
After James retired Elisa Velasco to start the fifth, Beth Wade recorded her first hit of the 2002 WCWS bringing up pinch hitter Jackie Hirschfeld. The senior sent a grounder through the left side for her first hit of the Series also. That brought in Seminole killer Leigh Ann Walker who has defeated the Seminoles three times in her career with two runners on board and one out in the inning. Colzie next loaded the bases on an error at third as the junior smashed a shot right at the Nebraska third baseman. The Seminoles, who are 2 for 5 in the postseason with the bases loaded, sent Carter and her single season record 50 RBIs to the plate. The co-captain sent a drive through the left side of the infield scoring two runs but two Nebraska fielding errors on the play allowed all three runners to score giving FSU the 3-1 lead. Van der Linden, after going hitless in seven at bats coming in to the game, got her second of the game as she sent a double to left center plating Carter and putting FSU in front 4-1. The Seminoles two hits off Walker in the fifth equaled the total they recorded in seven innings against the hurler last season in Tallahassee when the two teams faced off.
Malerich seemed to feed of the big inning as she came in and recorded her third K in a row by setting down the first two batters she faced swinging. Her five K's through five innings against the Huskers were more than the three strikeouts she had amassed in two games against UCLA and Cal at the World Series. The Huskers answered back though as they drew a walk and put together back-to-back hits to load the bases with two outs. Nicole Trimboli then singled to left scoring two runs but FSU got her at second as Becky Brock threw down to Stuart as the Husker over ran the base when she thought an FSU overthrow would allow her to advance.
With the Huskers back within a run at 4-3, Walker came out and set the Seminoles down in order as two Seminoles watched strike three and Brock popped out to second. Nebraska looked to even the game or take the lead in the bottom of the sixth after touching Malerich for more earned runs in the fifth than she had given up all World Series in 16 innings of work. Nebraska led off by walking on Malerich's 99th pitch of the night. The hurler induced a ground out for the second out of the inning before getting another ground out to the mound to end the sixth.
Carter, the FSU hero in the fifth, tried to help the Seminoles add to their advantage as she drew a one-out walk in the seventh. After a fielder's choice cut down Carter on her way to second, Stuart came up with two outs and a runner sitting on first but Walker got the All-American on a ground out to third to move the game to the bottom of the inning.
As the game entered the bottom of the frame, the Garnet and Gold moved within three outs of their first semi-final berth since 1990 as the Huskers sent their No. 9, No. 1 and No. 2 hitters to the plate in an attempt to stave off elimination. Malerich started things off with her sixth K of the night as Cindy Roethemeyer watched strike three. That brought up Ogee who was 1-for-1 with two walks and a run scored. The centerfielder grounded out to George with Wangler the only thing separating the Seminoles from the semifinals of the College World Series.

Seminole Softball Takes Arizona To 11 Innings Before Falling At WCWS.
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Florida State went further than most expected at the 2002 Women's College World Series. While perennial powers like UCLA, Arizona State, Michigan, Oklahoma and Nebraska were sitting at home, FSU was in a tie game in the 11th-inning versus the defending National Champions. But Arizona was just a little too much in the end as the Wildcats (55-11) used four runs in the top of the 11trh inning to end the Seminoles magical run to the semi-finals of the 2002 Women's College World Series. The loss left FSU at 55-20 on the year as they tied a record for the farthest advancement into the World Series in program history.
"I think this was a phenomenal run for us," said head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf. "We played about as well as we played all year and these kids really pulled together and did a great job.
"To come out here and go head-to-head with these teams they earned the respect of people around the country. We've always known how good these kids are and they really proved it here. They came and battled every single inning of every game. They were warriors."
The Seminoles gave the Wildcats everything they could handle as they lead the game at one point and then came back to tie the game just a half-inning UA took the lead. Florida State became just the second team to extend the Wildcats to 11 innings this year and the first team in five College World Series games to score two runs against Arizona.
"This was a great experience and there is no group of people I would have rather done it with," said Brandi Stuart. "We surprised some people but we never shocked ourselves. I am really not surprised. We should have done well in the World Series because this is a great team with a lot of talent.
"We were never intimidated. Coming in as an underdog was the worst thing that could have happened to the teams we faced because we had nothing to lose and all the other teams had the pressure on them. We have fun. We play our game. We had a good time and really enjoyed our experience here."
Sophomore Jessica van der Linden got the start in favor of Leslie Malerich (35-14) who had started every College World Series game and thrown 704 pitches in the last seven days. The Cerritos, CA native got off to little bit of a rough start as Wildcat lead-off hitter Lovieanne Jung singled the second pitch of the game into left field. Jung ended up on third with two down in the inning after a sacrifice and Jennie Finch ground out. Van der Linden next walked Leneah Manuma giving the Cats two on with two out. She issued her second walk of the inning to Mackenzie Vandergeest to load the bases and put Arizona in business. The sophomore got the next hitter to pop out to short ending the threat and sending the game to the bottom of the frame.
Two-time first team All-American Finch (34-5) retired Shundra Colzie on an attempted bunt before senior Kimmy Carter worked the count full and drew a walk. After getting van der linden swinging, first team All-American Brandi Stuart came up to the plate. The junior who came into the game hitting .400 in the World Series couldn't get around on a Finch fast ball as the hurler recorded her second K of the inning to retire the side.
The Florida State hurler seemed to get over the jitters that come along with a first-ever College World Series start and settled down in the second. She retired the first two hitters she faced on ground outs before Lisha Ribellia slapped a single to short and stole second. Van der Linden rebounded and induced her third ground out of the frame to retire the defending National Champions.
After Finch struck out the side in the bottom of the second, van der Linden got back to work. She retired the first batter she faced on a fly out to Skyla Cox who was making the first start of her career in the field playing in right. She then got Finch to foul out and then retired Manuma to set down Arizona's No 2, 3 and 4 hitters in order in the third.
The Seminoles finally broke through against the reigning national player of the year in the third as designated player Elisa Velasco smashed an infield single to short. After pinch runner Shandra Colzie replaced her at second, Finch retired Brock bringing up Shundra Colzie. The junior college transfer, who registered two hits versus UCLA's Keira Gorel, sent a soft liner into left for FSU's second hit of the inning and placing runners on the corners with just one out. Last night's hero, Carter then came up and recorded her third RBI in two games sending another single to left putting the Tribe up 1-0. The run was the first scored off of Finch in four games in the World Series dating back to the 2001 National Championship game when she shutout UCLA and covered 27 scoreless innings.
Arizona looked to get the run back in the fourth as the Cats led-off the frame with a hard hit double to center. Van der Linden then went to battle with freshman Jackie Coburn. The sophomore hurler took a 0-2 lead before eight pitches were fouled off with two balls mixed in before she got a pop to second base to get the first out of the inning. Vandergeest moved over to third on a ground out as van der Linden looked like she was going to get out of the inning without the lead-off double hurting her. But on the next pitch she threw one in the dirt that got away from Carter allowing Vandergeest to score from third to tie the game. Van der Linden walked the next two batters she faced before getting a fly out to end the inning but not before the tying run came across.
Marier drew the second walk of the day after seeing 12 pitches from Finch, fouling off six of those pitches. That brought up Beth Wade with one down and one on base. Finch got Wade on the All-American's eighth strike out of the game bringing up Velasco who got the first hit of the game off Finch in the third. The sophomore sent a shot deep into center but Crystal Farley, who seemed to be playing very shallow, made up ground and hauled in the fly ball for the third out of the fourth inning.
The Wildcats looked like they were in business in the top of the fifth as Courtney Fossatti started the inning off by smashing a 3-2 pitch right back at van der Linden. The pitcher batted the liner down but was unable to throw her out in time on the single. The Seminoles erased the base runner though as Fossatti got caught too far of the bag. Carter threw a snap throw to Stuart who put up a wall in front of the bag and picked off the Wildcat. Finch flew out to left before the Cats threatened to take the lead for the first time on the day. Manuma singled up the middle and went to second on an error in the FSU infield. Jackie Coburn then sent a hard shot to short that Tatiana George couldn't handle, which scored an Arizona pinch runner putting UA up 2-1 as the game moved to the bottom of the fifth.
As quickly as Arizona took the lead, Florida State tied things up. After Brock was retired leading off the inning, Shundra Colzie came to the plate. The outfielder hadn't hit a homer since April 13th, a stretch that covered 25 games. Colzie took a 3-2 pitch and sent it out of the park clearing the fence in left field 210-feet away. It was her fifth homer of the season and the first in 25 games since she lead-off game one versus Georgia Tech April 13th by going deep. The bomb was also just the 12th given up by Finch all season long and the first since May 10th when the NCAA's career homerun leader Stacey Nuveman took her yard.
Neither team mounted a serious threat in the sixth as the game headed to the seventh. Florida State ace and World Series star Malerich came into the game for FSU to try to send the game to the bottom of the inning with the score still tied. The first batter she saw got on base on the first error of the World Series by third baseman Brock. Manuma came up to sacrifice the runner over but FSU was unable to cut down the lead runner as the Wildcats now had runners on first and second with nobody out. The Seminoles did cut down the lead runner on the next play for the first out of the inning. Malerich got Coburn to pop out for the second out of the frame as Jenny Gladding came to the plate to try and put Arizona in front. The senior hurler got her looking at a called third strike as FSU moved to the last inning with a chance to win the game.
Finch was perfect though in the bottom of the seventh. She retired the side in order for the third time in seven innings and recorded her 11th strikeout of the game. Malerich was equally as good as she got the Cats 1-2-3 on a pop out to first, a ground out to third and a fly out to center.
The game moved into the top of the ninth with neither team threatening seriously in the eighth. The Wildcats started off the top of the ninth with a lead-off walk and the heart of the UA order waiting on deck. After Malerich struck out Finch looking, Manuma sent a slow roller to short that went through the legs of George, putting runners on first and second with just one out. Malerich got Vandergeest looking at a called third strike as she moved within one out of ending the Wildcat threat. She did just that as she notched her third K of the inning and fourth of the game.
The Seminoles looked like they would get something going in the bottom of the ninth as George started the bottom of the inning off with a single to left. Marier tried to bunt her to second but the Wildcats made a great defensive play not only gunning down the lead runner but turning the double play by getting Marier, which ended the FSU rally before it even got started.
The Florida State hurler set the Cats down in order in the 10th as she got a ground out, a fly out and her fifth strikeout of the game. The game moved into the bottom of the frame as FSU once again looked to end the game and force a second game on the day. After Velasco drew a one-out walk, she advanced to second on a Finch wild pitch moving her into scoring position with still just one out on the board. Finch though rebounded and showed why she is one of the nation's best by striking out the next two batters she faced for her 13th and 14th of the game.
The Seminoles seemed to be ready to move into the bottom of the 11th after Malerich got the first two hitters she faced bringing up Finch. The senior had been 0-for-5 on the day but she took an 0-1 pitch and deposited her 16th homerun of the year over the fence down the left field line. After a walk and a batter put on due to a hit by pitch, the Wildcats put the game away on a three-run shot by Coburn over the fence in left center extending the Wildcat lead to a 6-2 advantage. The four-run 11th was just too much for FSU to overcome in the bottom of the inning.
The Seminoles will lose five seniors off this year's team, which finished third in the nation in the national tournament. Starters Carter, Brock, Marier and Malerich played their last game as Seminoles Sunday along with Jackie Hirschfeld and this senior class had a big part in returning FSU softball to national prominence. The Tribe hadn't been to a College World Series since 1993 or a Regional Championship since 1996. This class went to three straight regional championships and a College World Series.
