Soccer Earns Last Minute Win Over No. 9 Texas A&M.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The top-ranked Seminole Soccer team (1-0) opened up the season with a win over No. 9 Texas A&M (0-1). The game was scoreless for just over 88 minutes before Clara Robbins put one in the back of the net to give the Seminoles a win on opening day.
"They had a couple of good looks at our goal but fortunately we persevered and fought hard and took advantage of the one chance that ended up in the back of the net," said head coach Mark Krikorian.
Florida State is now 10-0 at home on opening day under head coach Mark Krikorian and 16-1 all-time on the first day of the season.
The Seminoles dominated possession of the ball throughout the game holding on to it for 73 percent of the first half and 69 percent of the game. This led to a 14-2 shots advantage for the Noles with seven of those on frame.
Florida State got its first shot off in the 18th minute by Beata Olsson. It came off the second of four first-half corner kicks by FSU. It was not until the 42nd minute that the Noles got a shot on frame. Emma Bissell fired one in from the right side but it was saved.
The Garnet and Gold outshot TAMU 10-1 in the second half, but it was not until the last shot of the game that FSU scored.
Emily Madril made a strong run down the right side of the field and into the box. She passed one through a crowded middle of the field and connected with Clara Robbins who got off a shot that was blocked by a Texas A&M defender. She got the rebound and took another shot that was saved. Once again Robbins got her own rebound, this time finding the back of the net with just a minute and 31 seconds left in the game.
"It was a great effort by Emily to bring the ball forward," said Robbins. "Organizing our runs in the box was key to that goal and then following the rebounds. We were fortunate to get one in."
"She had a few whacks at it didn't she," said Krikorian. "It is a really good opponent to play against and all the respect to G and his staff and his kids for coming in here and battling us very hard. We learned a lot of lessons tonight and we are going to get better because of it, that is why you schedule these top games."
It was the redshirt senior's seventh goal of her career, after scoring six a season ago.

Soccer Cruises Past Alabama 4-0.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The top-ranked Seminole Soccer team (2-0) dominated the Crimson Tide (1-1) on Sunday afternoon. Florida State scored four goals on 17 shots while shutting out Alabama, limiting them to only three shots with one on frame.
Florida State controlled the first half, possessing the ball for 75 percent of the half while getting off seven shots compared to Alabama's one. This led to the Seminoles having a 2-0 lead heading into the half.
FSU's first goal came in the 21st minute and it was an own goal by Alabama. Florida State had three straight corners before Jenna Nighswonger curled one in from the right side. Alabama goalkeeper and former Florida State Seminole Brooke Bollinger went to punch the ball out of the box but the ball ricocheted into the net, giving FSU a 1-0 lead.
12 minutes later, in the 33rd minute, Maria Alagoa scored her first career goal as a Seminole. Lauren Flynn brought it up the left side and passed it off to Alagoa who took five steps towards the center for the field and fired one into the top right corner of the net from 22 yards out.
Two more firsts happened in the second half as Beata Olsson and Gianna Mitchell both scored their first goals at FSU to make it 4-0. Olsson scored in the 63rd minute off an assist from Clara Robbins and Mitchell capped off the game with a goal in the 83rd minute. Jody Brown passed a nice ball to Ran Iwai in the middle of the field, which she redirected to Mitchell making it 4-0.

Soccer Dominates South Alabama, 4-0. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The top-ranked Seminole Soccer team (3-0) shut down the Jaguars of South Alabama (2-1) on Thursday night, winning 4-0.
The Noles dominated the game from start to finish, not allowing a single shot the entire game while possessing the ball for 76 percent of it. FSU got off 27 shots with 15 of those on goal, resulting in four FSU goals.
"I thought that overall we had a really good performance," said head coach Mark Krikorian. "What an effort by South Alabama though. Their kids came in and were extremely organized and committed to their game plan and they fought and hung in there. It was quite challenging. They hung in there and they had a few counterattacks. With a little more luck they could have got one in behind us. Overall, I thought it was a solid performance for us."
Florida State came out of the gate firing, getting off its first shot just 46 seconds into the game. They took 11 shots in the first 30 minutes but it was not until the 12th shot that FSU got on the board. Jenna Nighswonger capitalized off of a blocked Jaelin Howell shot and ripped one into the right side of the net from 20-yards out.
The Seminoles headed into the half with just a 1-0 lead after taking 18 shots. That would change in the second half as three FSU goals were scored on nine shots.
The first goal of the second half came just under eight minutes in as Beata Olsson scored her second goal of the season on an assist from Gabby Carle. Carle dropped in a nice pass to Olsson about 15 yards from the goal and she turned around and put one into the right side of the net to make it 2-0.
A little over 10 minutes later, the Garnet and Gold made it 3-0 after Yujie Zhao scored her first goal of the season. Zhao got the rebound after the South Alabama goalkeeper deflected a Nighswonger cross. She stepped up to an open net at the PK spot and made it 3-0.
Gianna Mitchell capped off the 4-0 shutout with her second goal of the season on a beautiful header. Ran Iwai served one in nicely from 30 yards out to Mitchell who came flying in and headed the ball into the net.

Soccer Earns First Road Win of the Season, 2-1, Over Colorado.
BOULDER, Colo. - The top-ranked Seminole Soccer team improved to 4-0 on Sunday with a 2-1 win over Colorado (2-1) in their first road match of the season. The Seminoles played in front of 2,536 fans, the second-largest crowd ever at Prentup Field.
The Seminoles dominated possession of the ball once again, holding onto it for 65 percent of the entire game. In the first half, FSU got off nine shots compared to Colorado's zero. In the second half, it was not much different as the Noles outshot the Buffalos six to one.
Even though the Seminoles had nine shots in the first half only two of them were on goal. Those two were kicked directly at the Colorado goalkeeper, Dani Hansen who ended the game with four saves.
In the second half, the Garnet and Gold got off an early shot in the 51st minute by Lauren Flynn that was saved by Hansen. Just over a minute later Jaelin Howell got a shot off on goal that too was saved.
It took 12 shots and three in the second half for the Seminoles to finally score. Kirsten Pavlisko scored her first goal of the season and her second career goal on an assist from Clara Robbins in the 54th minute. Pavlisko's last goal came on September 2, 2018, against UCLA. Pavlisko dropped off a pass to Robbins who redirected the ball back to Pavlisko as she made a run into the right side of the box. She cut towards the middle and fired one at the keeper from about 10 yards out. Hansen would get a hand on it but it was not enough as Pavlisko gave the Seminoles a 1-0 lead.
Just 10 minutes later Florida State made it 2-0 with Gabby Carle's first goal of the season on an assist from Yujie Zhao. Zhao stole a Colorado pass just outside the 18-yard box and made a run to the 6-yard box before passing the ball back to Carle at the PK spot. Carle took a quick one-touch shot into the back of the net.
Colorado would continue to fight as they narrowed the lead to one after scoring a goal in the 71st minute on a header by Allie Palangi on an assist from Jade Babcock-Chi. This would be the only shot the Seminoles would let up all game.

Soccer Improves To 10-0 With Shutout Of Louisville.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The top-ranked Seminole Soccer team (10-0) wins their 13th straight ACC game, ninth straight road game and 20th straight regular-season game with a 3-0 win over Louisville (6-2-1).
The Garnet and Gold have also gone without a loss in the first 10 games of the season for the fourth time in program history and improves its road record to 43-15-8 since 2013.
There was not much going on in the first half as there were only two shots in the entire half, even though the Seminoles controlled the ball for a majority of the half.
The second half was a different game as the Seminoles put up three goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half. Beata Olsson scored first for the Seminoles, the sixth of the season for the Florida transfer, in the 53rd minute. After Jody Brown was fouled on the right side of the box, Jenna Nighswonger took the free-kick and flung in a nice ball to the top of the six-yard box that Olsson was able to get her head on and score.
The Seminoles' first goal of the game made it the 26th consecutive game that FSU has scored a goal, tying the second-longest streak in program history.
Just under 10 minutes later, FSU made it 2-0 with a goal by Jody Brown, her first of the season and sixth of her career. Jaelin Howell made a nice pass from the middle of the field to Clara Robbins on the right side who with a one-touch passed laid it off to Brown making a run from the right side. Brown fired the ball past the Louisville keeper, making it 2-0.
Jody Brown became the Seminoles 16th different goal scorer this season, tying the program record set in 2012.
Just over two minutes later FSU scored its third goal in under 12 minutes. Amelia Horton earned her first points as a Seminole when she assisted on Nighswonger's second goal of the season. Horton sent a cross to the far post to a running Nighswonger who was able to get a foot on the ball and send it between the Louisville keeper's legs.
Nighswonger scored or assisted on five different goals during this week's games against Pitt and Louisville.

Soccer Improves to 5-0 in ACC Play.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The top-ranked Seminole Soccer team (12-0) wins their 15th straight ACC game, 12th straight home game and 22nd straight regular-season game with a 5-0 win over Syracuse (4-7-1).
The Garnet and Gold had their seventh shutout of the season improving Mark Krikorian's home record to 177-15-9 since his first season in 2005. The Seminoles found the back of the net five times, making this the eighth game this season with four or more goals.
The Seminoles have been unstoppable with 17 different players scoring goals this season, breaking the program record from 2012. Amelia Horton scored the first goal of her career making her number 17 on the list.
Scoring opened up for Florida State in the 36th minute with Horton's goal off of a corner from Leianni Nesbeth. Nesbeth placed the ball onto Emily Madril's head in which it deflected off and rebounded to Gianna Mitchell. Mitchell sent the ball towards the goal and Horton was there to clean it up.
The second half proved to be more rewarding for the Seminoles with four goals scored by three different players. In the 52nd minute Clara Robbins threw in the ball in Syracuse's final third to Jody Brown's feet. Brown challenged her defender and fed the ball back to Robbins. With a one-two touch, Robbins sent a fast-paced ball on the ground into the bottom left corner of the net. It was Robbin's fifth goal of the season.
The third goal resulted from an own goal on Syracuse. Nesbeth placed a corner kick near post to Madril who challenged Syracuse's defender that ultimately headed the ball into her own goal in the 62nd minute.
Less than two minutes later, Kirsten Pavlisko scored her fourth goal of the season off of a cross from Brown. Brown placed the ball inside the 18-yard box after a scramble with the Syracuse defense. Pavlisko ran onto the ball, took one touch and knocked the ball off of the upper post and into the goal in the 64th minute. This was the third consecutive game this season with a goal scored within three minutes of the prior goal.
Maria Alagoa added to the tally with her fourth goal of the season in the 85th minute. After stripping a Syracuse defender of the ball, Alagoa took on two defenders and pulled up to shoot right outside the 18-yard box, placing the ball into the right side of the net.
The Seminoles outshot the Orange 21-1 and maintained 73% of the possession. Mia Justus recorded one save and her fourth shutout of the season.

Soccer Ties No. 7 UNC 2-2.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The top-ranked Seminole Soccer team (14-0-1) remained unbeaten for the 18th straight ACC game with a 2-2 tie to No. 7 North Carolina (10-2-3). The Seminoles 18 game ACC unbeaten streak ranks second in program history and their 12 game road unbeaten streak ranks tied for the second-best streak in school history.
The Garnet and Gold have also gone without a loss in the first 15 games of the season for the third time in program history and improved its road record to 45-15-9 since 2013. Florida State's 15 game unbeaten streak to open the 2021 season is tied for the third-longest unbeaten streak in FSU soccer history.
It did not take the Seminoles long to get on the board as Beata Olsson scored her 10th goal of the season just 58 seconds into the game. A long ball was sent into the middle of the field by Lauren Flynn after a foul by UNC. The ball was headed by Kristina Lynch and Olsson found the other end of the header. After gathering the ball, she fired a rocket from close to 30 yards out, giving the Noles a quick 1-0 lead. It was Olsson's second goal this season that came less than a minute into the game. She scored just 29 seconds into the game against No. 10 Auburn earlier this season.
North Carolina tied the game up in the 32nd minute after a goal from Isabel Cox, assisted by Emily Murphy. It was just the third first-half goal of the season allowed by the Seminoles.
The Tar Heels scored once again in the 62nd minute to take a 2-1 lead. Isabel Cox scored her second goal of the game off the bench. The goal was assisted by Emily Moxley and Same Meza. UNC's 2-1 lead marked just the second time in ACC play and the third time this season that the Noles trailed in a game this season.
The Seminoles tied it back up in the 80th minute after Olsson's second goal of the game and 11th of the season. Yujie Zhao passed the ball to Jenna Nighswonger in the middle of the field about 25 yards from the goal. Nighswonger dropped one into Olsson between several Carolina defenders as she made a run into the box. While running to her right, Olsson shot the ball across the face of the Carolina keeper and into the back of the net. It marks Olsson's third multi-goal game this season.
The game was tied at the end of regulation as the Garnet and Gold headed to overtime for the first time all season. After no shots were taken by either team in the first OT, FSU got off two in the second overtime both saved by the UNC keeper. With a minute left in the game, North Carolina got off their only shot of overtime and Cristina Roque secured the tie with her second save of the night.

Clara Robbins was named the ACC Tournament MVP for the second straight year and she was joined by Maria Alagoa, Emily Madril, Lauren Flynn and Cristina Roque on the All-Tournament Team.
The Seminoles threatened early in the sixth minute after some nice passing by Beata Olsson and Jody Brown. Olsson received the ball in the middle of the field and sent a nice pass between a pair of Virginia defenders to hit Brown in stride. Brown's cross back to Olsson was intercepted by the Virginia keeper.
UVA retaliated quickly getting off the first shot of the game in the seventh minute but Cristina Roque was able to get in front of the ball after a nasty hop. Two minutes later, Virginia's Haley Hopkins had another look but it would go off the left post.
The Seminoles took the lead in the 10th minute off a perfect shot by Clara Robbins, for her sixth goal of the season. She intercepted the ball off a Virginia throw-in and turned around and fired an absolute rocket from over 30 yards out into the top of the net over the outstretched arm of Virginia's goalkeeper. It is the second straight season that Robbins has scored a goal in the ACC Championship game as she scored two last season against No. 1 North Carolina on her way to being named the ACC Tournament MVP.
Virginia was more aggressive in the second half as they were able to come away with eight shots compared to their three in the first half. The Seminoles' defense remained stout as they held Virginia off the scoreboard with great defensive play and a pair of fantastic saves by Roque. With FSU's shutout victory they held Virginia scoreless for just the second time all season.

Soccer Advances to Second Round of NCAA.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The number one ranked Seminole Soccer team (17-1-2) started NCAA tournament play at home with a 3-0 win over South Alabama (12-5-3).
The Seminoles beat South Alabama for the second time this season in front of 2,125 fans, the third-largest home crowd of the season. The Noles improve to 20-0-1 in first-round NCAA appearances. Tonight's match was the fifth time that the Jaguars and the Seminoles have met in the NCAA postseason. The Seminoles have not conceded a goal to South Alabama and have tallied 20 goals against them in postseason play.
Scoring opened early in the first half with a goal from Jody Brown during the 23rd minute. Jaelin Howell drove through South Alabama's defensive line, sending a ball across the goal to the top of the six-yard box to Clara Robbins. Robbins redirected the ball to Brown waiting on the far post. With one touch, Brown scored her second goal of the season.
The second goal for the Seminoles came three minutes later from Beata Olsson. With her 12th goal of the season, Olsson is now tied for the second-most goals scored in a season for a Seminole since 2015. The scoring drive started with Jenna Nighswonger finding Maria Alagoa in the attacking midfield. Alagoa played a two-touch ball through the Jaguar backline to Yujie Zhao. Zhao placed a ball one touch to Olsson at the penalty mark, who finished one touch past the South Alabama keeper.
The Seminole backline not only earned their 10th shutout within 20 games but also earned their 11th goal of the season by Emily Madril. The goal came in the 82nd minute off of a corner from Nighswonger. Nighswonger sent the ball to the back post where Lauren Flynn redirected the ball with her head. The South Alabama keeper made a diving save, but couldn't contain it when Madril came in for the rebound placing the ball into the back of the net.

Soccer Dominates SMU, 5-1, to Advance to the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The number one ranked Seminole Soccer team (18-1-2) kept their season alive with a 5-1 win against No. 25 SMU (12-6-2) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Seminoles continue to feel comfortable hosting as they move to a 19-2 record in second-round NCAA Tournament appearances and 49-2-1 at home, during NCAA postseason games. Tonight's matchup was the first time Florida State and SMU have met in the NCAA postseason. This was the eighth time that the Seminoles have scored at least five goals in NCAA Tournament play, the last time was in 2017 against Ole Miss at home in the first round.
The defensive line continued to add to Florida State's attacking efforts with one goal and two assists accredited to three of the starting back four. Gabby Carle's goal in the 71st minute was assisted by fellow defender, Emily Madril. Kirsten Pavlisko picked up the other assist with a pass to Kristina Lynch in the closing minutes of the match. The defensive line now has a combined to score 12 goals with four from Pavlisko, three from Madril and Carle, and two from Lauren Flynn. Combined, the backline has scored 21 career goals and earned 25 assists.
In the 21st minute, Yujie Zhao scored the first goal of the game off of a free-kick just outside the 18-yard box. Zhao's strike hit the left goal post and bounced across the goal into the right side of the net.
Just over five minutes later, the Seminoles struck again with a goal from Jody Brown. Brown earned her second consecutive goal in NCAA postseason play with pure speed. Jenna Nighwonger sent a ball past SMU's backline, who were not fast enough to hold off Brown. Brown drove toward the keeper and after a fake and a touch beating the keeper, Brown passed the ball into the back of the net.
Beata Olsson scored her team-leading 13th goal of the season with an individual effort in SMU's defensive half. SMU attempted to pass the ball back to a central defender when Olsson intercepted it and gave herself an open breakaway on goal, beating the goalkeeper one on one.
The defensive duo of Carle and Madril combined in the 71st minute for FSU's fourth goal of the game. Madril dribbled the ball deep into the Mustang's half of the field before passing the ball to Carle on the left side of the field. Carle took one touch and hit the ball from outside the 18-yard box with her left foot, placing it across the goal in the right upper corner.
SMU scored their only game on a penalty kick in the 80th minute. Lindsey Whitmore firmly placed the ball into the upper left corner. The Seminoles responded two minutes later with a goal from Lynch. Pavlisko played a ball across the goal from the touchline to Lynch inside the six-yard box. Lynch redirected the pass into the open goal, scoring her second goal of the season.

Soccer Advances to The Elite 8 With a 1-0 Shutout of Pepperdine.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The number one ranked Seminole Soccer team (19-1-2) moves on to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament following a 1-0 win over No. 19 Pepperdine (17-4-1) at the Seminole Soccer Complex.
Today's win marked the 50th Seminole win at home in NCAA postseason history. Florida State improved to 69-18-5 overall postseason and 15-3-1 in third-round matchups.
Meeting Pepperdine for the first time in postseason play, the Seminoles displayed a masterclass of defense, earning their 11th shutout of the season. Kirsten Pavlisko, Emily Madril, Lauren Flynn, Gabby Carle and Jaelin Howell helped Cristina Roque hold the Waves to only four shots during the game.
Jody Brown has continued her streak of goals in postseason play with the game-winner in the fifth minute. Brown has scored one goal in each of the last three games. The goal started with Howell flicking the ball with her head on to Clara Robbins down the right side. Robbins sent a one-touch ball deep into the Waves' half in the direction of Brown. Brown showed off her impressive speed, outworking Pepperdine's defense inside the 18-yard box. Brown cut back to the left and struck the ball to the far left post before bouncing in on the right side of the net.
The Waves managed to keep the Seminoles out of the back of the net during the second half despite many close chances. The Noles had a streak of close offside calls inside the Pepperdine 18-yard box.
Beata Olsson had the best chance of the half on a breakaway play. Olsson approached the keeper one on one and attempted to place the ball on the far left side. This time, the post was not in favor of the Seminoles and the ball bounced back out into play.

Soccer Books Ticket to College Cup.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The number one ranked Seminole Soccer team (20-1-2) moves on to the College Cup following a 1-0 overtime win against No. 9 Michigan (18-6-3) at the Seminole Soccer Complex.
The Seminoles will travel to Santa Clara for their second straight College Cup appearance. This will be the eighth time that the Seminoles head to the College Cup in the last 11 years and their 12th appearance in program history. The 1-0 win in the first overtime was the Seminoles' 20th win of the season and concluded their 12 game unbeaten streak at home this season. The Noles' Elite 8 record improved to 10-4-2. Florida State has won six games in overtime in NCAA postseason play, with only two wins coming within the first overtime period.
Cristina Roque came up big with four saves, tying her season-high against Virginia. The formidable backline of Jaelin Howell, Lauren Flynn, Emily Madril, Kirsten Pavlisko and Gabby Carle helped keep Michigan out of the net the entire 99 minutes of play. Today's match marked shutout number 12 of the season.
The first half consisted of many quality chances on goal for the Seminoles. Beata Olsson found the back of the net in the ninth minute but it was recalled for being offside by mere inches. The next best chance was in the 16th minute off of a corner from Jenna Nighswonger. Nighswonger bent the ball towards the goal inducing a slight scramble among Michigan's goalkeeper and defenders. The ball looked as though it had bounced over the goal line and was called for official review. After review, the referee determined that there was no goal, and play continued.
In the second half, the Seminoles created a stronger push in the offensive half, totaling seven shots in comparison to only two in the first half. Nighswonger and Clara Robbins led the team in shots with two apiece, followed by shots from Howell, Madril, Olsson, and Yujie Zhao. A saved penalty kick from Michigan kept the game tied in the 74th minute. 90 minutes was not enough time for either team to produce a goal and the Seminoles headed into their 13th postseason overtime game.
In the 99th minute, with one minute left in the first overtime period, the Seminoles finally found the back of the net. With a strong push forward and heavy presence in the box, Howell served the ball from the right corner of the 18-yard box to the back post. With a diving effort, Carle kept the ball from going out and flicked it back toward the field of play. The Michigan goalkeeper left her line to challenge Carle, leaving Olsson unmarked on the goal line. Olsson finished Carle's saving play with one-touch into an open net. The team stormed the field and celebrated their 10th quarterfinal win.

Soccer Advances to National Championship.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The number one ranked Seminole Soccer team (21-1-2) won 1-0 against No. 5 Rutgers (19-4-2) in the semifinals of the College Cup in Santa Clara, California.
Florida State will advance to their third National Championship in the last four years. The Seminoles' semifinal record improved to 5-6-1, leading them to their sixth championship match in program history. Tonight's match tallied shutout number 13 of the season, with the Seminoles outscoring their opponents 66-13. The Noles' all-time NCAA Tournament record improved to 71-18-5. Florida State now ranks second in the nation for all-time NCAA Tournament wins behind only North Carolina.
The first half remained scoreless as the Seminoles and the Scarlet Knights could not find the back of the net. The Seminoles' best chances of the night were stopped short by the Rutgers' defense. Clara Robbins created a goal-scoring opportunity by beating her defender one on one in the right corner of the field. She crossed the ball to Ran Iwai on the back post. Iwai headed the ball to Beata Olsson in the middle of the six-yard box. The crossbar was not in favor of the Seminoles as Olsson's header bounced off the top crossbar. LeiLanni Nesbeth tried to clean up the rebound before the Rutgers' defense dove in, blocking the shot and creating a corner kick for the Noles.
The second half consisted of many close chances from both teams. Cristina Roque came up big with a diving save against Rutgers' leading scorer early in the half. In the 77th minute, Roque made two more big-time saves. Rutgers broke through the Florida State defensive line and took a shot on goal. Roque deflected the shot and popped right back up to smother the rebound effort from Rutgers.
The Seminoles finally connected on a corner kick to gain the lead in the 71st minute. Jenna Nighswonger took the corner kick from the right corner. Nighswonger sent the ball into a mix of Seminoles and Scarlet Knights. Captain, Jaelin Howell was there to clean up the scramble with a shot into the back of the net. Howell's lone goal proved to be enough to ensure the Seminoles another trip to the National Championship.

Florida State Soccer Crowned National Champions for the Third Time.
Seminoles and Cougars settle the championship in penalty kick shootout.
By Elliott Finebloom
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - For the third time in the last 10 years, the top-ranked Florida State women's soccer team has won the NCAA National Championship. FSU downed No. 13 BYU Monday evening in Santa Clara in a penalty kick shootout to win the Women's College Cup. FSU (22-1-2) now has the second-most NCAA titles in the history of the sport and is one of just two teams to ever win three titles in an eight-year span.
Florida State, which lost the 2020 title in a shootout, wouldn't fall victim to the same fate in 2021. Goalkeeper Cristina Roque came up with saves on the second and fourth BYU PKs and Yujie Zhao sealed the title hitting the final PK to give the Seminoles the title 4-3.
"I feel like I had a lot of trust in my teammates, everyone who was stepping up to kick the ball especially (Zhao) finishing it off" said Roque. "I feel like everyone is behind me no matter which way it goes just how last year it didn't just go our way and everyone was behind me then. I knew whatever happened this year they were going to be behind me. I'm not gonna lie it does feel better here."
"That was a great feeling," said Zhao about hitting the winning penalty kick. "I have a faith...It's a little unfortunate we didn't score a goal in the regular time but I have a faith that we are going to win in PKs."
With the 2021 title in hand, Florida State has cemented its legacy among the greatest programs in the sport. Only North Carolina has won more NCAA women's soccer national championships as FSU is now tied with Notre Dame and Stanford for second on the all-time list for most championships.
"It feels quite nice to be sitting on this side of it," said FSU Head Coach Mark Krikorian. "Last year I thought that we were quite good and we had some unfinished business we needed to address."
BYU, which came into the match averaging 3.5 goals a game, was facing an FSU team that hadn't allowed a goal in the run of play all tournament. Neither team was able to breakthrough in 110 minutes of play as the Seminoles shut down the potent BYU attack, shutting out the Cougars for just the third time this season.
"Everyone that was here was treated to a heck of a soccer game with two very good teams," said Krikorian. "I thought BYU gave us everything we could handle. Extremely proud of our group. I thought we played well, played smart, played hard but BYU matched us all the way. Heck of a national championship. Heck of a final."
The Cougars had a couple of good chances to take the lead in the first half. The first was a goal that was waved off due to an offside call. The second was thwarted by a key defensive stop by MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist Emily Madril whose sliding tackle just eight yards in front of the FSU goal negated a serious scoring opportunity.
With just under 20 minutes remaining in regulation, Jody Brown had a piece of individual brilliance to create a dangerous chance. The Jamaican national beat two BYU players and worked her way four yards out from goal but from a difficult angle she was unable to get her shot on frame.
As the clock clicked under 10:00, BYU had another scoring opportunity. A Cougar deflection in the box landed right in front of an attacking Jamie Shepherd who one-timed the shot just over the crossbar keeping the game even.
With just 1:00 remaining, FSU almost cemented the game off a Zhao corner. The Cougars attempted to clear the cross but the Cougars' header went off the crossbar and bounced back to Brown. The sophomore fired from three yards out but couldn't get past the bodies in the box and her shot was deflected off a BYU defender.
In the 102nd-minute Heather Payne looked like she had sent the game-winning assist into the box. The Irish national sent a beautiful ball into the middle of the box where Beata Olsson had her shot blocked at point-blank range. Brown was there and looked to have a chance to follow up but slipped down before she could get a chance off.
Just three minutes later it was Jenna Nighswonger that had a chance to end it but her shot ended up right on the BYU keeper who made the stop.
