Florida State Athletic Director Dave Hart issues statement on Georgia’s hiring of Head Soccer Coach Patrick Baker.

December 8, 2004

“While we certainly would have liked for Patrick Baker to continue his role as the women’s soccer coach at Florida State, and made that very clear to him prior to his visit to Athens, we accept his decision to take the job at the University of Georgia and wish him and his family the very best. Patrick did a great job during his tenure here and because of that we have a very attractive position, which we must now fill. We will begin that process immediately.”

Baker served as the women’s soccer head coach at FSU since 1999. In his six-year tenure, Baker posted an 80-46-11 record and played in five straight NCAA Tournaments. He also led the Tribe to the College Cup in 2003 after which he was named Soccer America’s National Coach of the Year.

US U-19 National Team Coach Mark Krikorian Selected to Head FSU Soccer.

Mark Krikorian was named 2002 WUSA Coach of the Year with the Philadelphia Charge.

January 12, 2005

United States U-19 National Team head coach and 2002 WUSA Coach of the Year Mark Krikorian was announced as the new head women’s soccer coach at Florida State today by Athletics Director Dave Hart. Krikorian brings 14 years of head coaching experience to Tallahassee at all levels of the game including college, pro and with the US Olympic Development Program. He is just the third coach in the history of the FSU soccer program.

“Having Mark Krikorian accept our offer to become the head coach of our women’s soccer program is certainly cause for much excitement and anticipation,” said Hart. “Mark brings a wealth of experience and knowledge from his prior positions on the college, professional and national team levels of competition. He is an accomplished teacher, coach and recruiter who will build on the success which Patrick Baker generated during his outstanding tenure at Florida State. This search produced some truly distinguished candidates, which speaks volumes about our soccer program. We welcome Mark, Linda and their children into our Seminole family.”

“I am thrilled to join the Florida State family and am looking forward to working with such an outstanding group of student-athletes,” said Krikorian. “I am excited to work with an athletic department that is committed to excellence.”

Krikorian comes to Florida State fresh off leading the United States U-19 National Team to the bronze medal while winning the FIFA Fair Play Award at the 2004 U-19 Women’s World Cup. Prior to that he spent 2003 as a scout for the US Women’s National Team preparing reports on opponents in both the CONCACAF Qualifications and the Women’s World Cup.

As the head coach of the Philadelphia Charge from 2000-2003, Krikorian had another opportunity to coach the top players in the world and he once again proved he could take talent and guide it to great heights. He coached the Charge to two playoff berths in his three seasons and was named the league’s coach of the year in 2002. Krikorian drafted and coached 10 WUSA All-Stars and coached an all-star team during his tenure with the league.

“I feel fortunate I have had so many opportunities and experiences in both the WUSA and with the US National Team program,” said Krikorian. “I feel that those experiences will be a huge benefit to us (FSU) as we continue to improve upon the outstanding foundation the Patrick (Baker) and his staff have established.”

Krikorian has achieved an equal measure of success on the college level. He coached the University of Hartford for five seasons from 1996-2000 leading the squad to an Elite Eight and two Sweet Sixteen appearances during his four consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. He recruited five National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Americans, three academic All-Americans and his squads received the NSCAA Team Academic Award on four occasions. Overall, Krikorian’s teams averaged 15 wins per season as he posted a 75-30-3 overall record while winning three conference championships. Three of his squads finished the year ranked in the NSCAA’s top 15. He coached two of his players to conference player of the year awards and three to conference rookie of the year honors.

Before taking over the Hartford program, Krikorian was the head coach at Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, NH for six seasons from 1990-1996 where his teams won two National Championships, both during undefeated seasons, and appeared in two other final fours. His squads had a remarkable 39-game winning streak and his 1995 National Championship team was 20-0. Krikorian’s teams compiled a 93-19-2 record in seven seasons. He recruited three National Players of the Year, eight All-Americans, five academic All-Americans and four national scoring champions. His team at Franklin Pierce also garnered the NSCAA Team Academic Award.

“Academics have always been very important to me wherever I coached and few schools combine the athletic and academic opportunities the FSU provides its student-athletes,” said Krikorian. “The average SAT score of an FSU student is 1200 and when you couple that with what the athletic department has to offer, FSU becomes a very attractive school to potential recruits.”

On top of his coach of the year honor from the WUSA, Krikorian was named the NSCAA’s Northeast Division I Coach of the Year in 1997, the NSCAA Division II National Coach of the Year in 1992 and 1995, the NSCAA Division Northeast Region Coach of the Year in 1992 and 1995 and was a two-time New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1995. In 1990 and 1993 he was named the Division II New England Coach of the Year as well.

Krikorian was a standout player at St. Anselm College in Manchester, NH from 1981-1983. He was a two-time captain and team MVP. In 1983 he was a New England Indoor Soccer League (NEISL) All-Star and a first-team All-New England selection.

“This is a very exciting time for our team and this program,” said team captain Kelly Rowland. “A lot of unknowns we were going through are behind us and it is good to have a coach in place. The administration did a great job and we are excited to meet coach Krikorian. I watched him coach the Charge growing up in Philadelphia so it is especially exciting for me. We are all very happy with the decision and look forward to getting started.”

Krikorian graduated with a degree in history from St. Anselm College and he earned his master’s degree in education from Keene (NH) State College in 1994. Krikorian also served as an assistant men’s coach at the University of Maine in Farmington and was a Social Studies teacher at Mt. Abram High School in Maine and Raymond High School in New Hampshire. He is married to the former Linda Mastrogiovanni. They have two children Alexandra (4) and Michael (2).

India Trotter Leads No. 7 Seminoles To 3-0 Win Over FAU At NCAA Tournament.

GAINESVILLE, FL - The second-seeded Florida State Seminoles played their fourth NCAA Tournament game in Gainesville's James G. Pressly Stadium Friday and raised their record to 3-0-1 at UF. The Seminoles (18-3-0) opened the 2005 NCAA Tournament with a 3-0 victory over A-Sun Champion Florida Atlantic (16-4-1). Seminole midfielder India Trotter scored two goals, her ninth and tenth of the year, as FSU won its record-setting 18th game of the season. The Seminoles will advance to face the winner of the Illinois/Florida match Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

The Seminole victory ended FAU's 14-game undefeated run into the tournament as FSU remained unbeaten in NCAA Tournament openers improving their record to 5-0-1 in the first game of NCAA play. FSU held the Owls without a goal for the first time in 16 games as the Seminoles established a new school record with their 11th shutout of the season. FSU also ended Florida Atlantic's shutout streak that exceeded 850 minutes before Trotter scored the eventual game winner at 43:01.

"I thought it was a very challenging game and Florida Atlantic was very organized as I expected they would be," said Florida State Head Coach Mark Krikorian. "Their commitment to defend and be organized and generate chances as well was outstanding. I don't think we were as sharp today as we can be and need to be. We were fortunate to score a goal just before half. It was a good goal in the sense of giving us some momentum. It didn't seem over the 90 minutes we were able to create a rhythm and that is a credit to FAU."

"I thought for our first time here we represented ourselves very well," said FAU Head Coach Brian Dooley. "I really don't think the 3-0 final was very indicative of the game. We were pushing up trying to get the tying goal and that exposed us in the back a little bit. A 1-0 loss doesn't help you. I was very proud of my team and they certainly belonged here. This is just the start of something big for us."

Neither team was able to get much of an attack generated in the first half as the teams recorded just two shots a piece. With less than two minutes remaining in the first period Trotter got the Seminoles on the board. Florida State defender Katrin Schmidt started the play with a dynamic run down the left side. She sent a dangerous ball to the backpost where Collette Swensen touched the ball square to a wide open Trotter who buried the shot into an open net.

"They were playing with a sweeper system and it was really effective at first," said Trotter. "We were struggling a little to find a rhythm and I think the credit goes to FAU for holding to just two shots in that first half."

Florida State started to exert itself more in the second period as they doubled FAU's shot production. Despite an 8-4 edge in second half shots, the Owls remained within a goal with just over four minutes remaining on the clock.

FSU's Holly Peltzer gave the Seminoles the cushion they were looking for at 85:51. The play was started with an unbelievable pass by Odebrecht that found Melissa Samokishyn on the right flank. The Colorado native sent a ball into the box that went under a defender's foot and right to Peltzer in front of the net. Her goal was the third of the season in Gainesville for the Lake Mary, FL forward. Peltzer scored twice earlier this season in FSU's 4-2 victory over the Gators.

"I don't know why I have had some success here," said Peltzer. "The credit goes to my teammates for great services. That is what happened tonight. Mel beat a player down the sideline. My mark was off me and she found me in the box."

"Coach had been talking to us about playing the long ball through because their defenders were following the forwards all over the field," said Samokishyn. "Viola played a great ball through and I was able to get a cross off and credit Holly for finishing it."

Trotter then struck again to put the finishing touches on the win. With just 29 seconds remaining in the match Odebrecht exposed the FAU defense which was pushing forward looking to get on the board. Odebrecht's long pass to the right side was right on to the foot of Trotter. The junior went to the back post with her shot as she recorded her first multi-goal game since September 1 in a 7-0 win over Jacksonville.

"We know what a talent (Trotter) is," said Dooley who coached Trotter in youth soccer. "She is a difficult player to play against because she can beat you in so many ways. We didn't go in specifically talking about any players but knowing she was someone we needed to worry about."

"India has just been wonderful all season long," said Krikorian. "It started with our first day of training back in August and she has made great progress all season long. She wants to be a good player. India plays hard every day and we know what we are going to get from her. I thought she had a good honest effort today and was rewarded with two goals."

No. 2 Seed FSU Soccer Moves To Round Of 16 With 2-1 Victory Over Illinois.

GAINESVILLE, FL - Despite an unusually quite stadium and an unfamiliar opponent, Sunday's 2-1 win over Illinois in the second round of the NCAA Tournament was familiar for second-seeded Florida State. For the fourth time in six NCAA Tournament trips the Seminole soccer team (19-3) has advanced to the round of 16 and each and every time it has been by identical 2-1 scores. Sunday's victim was the Fighting Illini (12-7-3) who was looking to get back to the third round for the second straight season but thanks to goals by Sel Kuralay and India Trotter it was FSU that advanced to play the winner of Cal and UTEP next weekend.

"I thought our performance was pretty good today," said FSU Head Coach Mark Krikorian. "We established a nice rhythm into the game relatively early. In the first 30 minutes we played some nice attacking soccer. Sel got a great goal for us. I give Illinois a lot of credit for the effort they put in. They were very organized and hard to break down. They made it a very exciting finish to the game."

"I have said something about this team all year long that most of the time irrespective of the result we came off the field feeling like we were the better soccer team. Today I think, credit to them, Florida State was the better soccer team," said Illinois Head Coach Janet Rayfield. "Their play in the midfield is exceptional and that is where the game was won today. This was a great NCAA Tournament soccer game."

Florida State dominated statistically in the first half taking 13 shots to just four for Illinois. The first one to find the back of the net though came in the 30th minute. Kelly Rowland made a great run and split the defense with a ball to All-ACC first team selection Kuralay. The Australian Olympian took a turn and fired from nearly 30 yards out. The shot went to the upper corner on the right side of the goal putting FSU in front 1-0.

"It was a great run in by Kelly," said Kuralay. "After taking on about 10 players, she saw I was free and played me the ball. Nobody really closed me down so I had a lot of time. I looked up, picked my spot and shot it. I like to score from range. It is one of the strongest points of my game. I am not a quick player so I kind of compensate for that with shots from distance."

The Seminoles got back on the board again in the 64th minute to go up 2-0. This time it was a great build up started out wide by Melissa Samokishyn. She found Trotter in the box. The junior All-America candidate tried to play the ball to Kuralay but it was intercepted. The deflection came right back to Trotter who was in 1-v-1 with the keeper as she scored her third goal of the NCAA Tournament.

"I tried to flick the ball inside the box to Sel but it didn't work," said Trotter. "It hit of one of their defenders and took a bounce right back to me. I was standing in front of the goalkeeper with the ball at my foot. I just tried to slot it past her.

"It feels better to win than score goals to be honest. It doesn't matter to me that I have a few goals. What matters is we are moving on in a single elimination tournament. It is a better feeling that we are going to play next weekend that me scoring my third goal this weekend."

Illinois got back into the game with less than 15 minutes on the clock. Laura Redmond played a ball inside the FSU box between two Seminole defenders. Ella Masar ran onto the pass and had an easy finish from about eight yards away.

That was as close as Illinois would get though. Despite pushing numbers forward in hopes of equalizing the match, the Seminole backline held strong. For the match they allowed just eight shots compared to 20 taken by FSU. The corner battle was fairly even with FSU holding a 5-4 edge and both teams put six of their shots on frame.

"We came to Florida looking to win a national championship," said Illini defender Kelly Campbell. "I thought we played our hearts out Friday night from the opening kickoff to winning the game in double-overtime. We played our hearts out today, but Florida State was just a better soccer team today than we were. I personally feel that this was a successful trip for us to the NCAA tournament."

FSU Soccer Headed To NCAA Quarterfinals After 2-1 Win Over Cal.

TALLAHASSEE, FL - For the second time in three seasons the Florida State soccer team is headed to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament. The second-seeded Seminoles (20-3) advanced to the round of eight Sunday with a 2-1 victory over No. 3 seed and sixth-ranked Cal (16-4-2) in Tallahassee. Juniors Kelly Rowland and India Trotter each scored goals to give the Seminoles a 2-0 lead before the Bears scored with just 37 seconds remaining in the match. Florida State will now face second-ranked North Carolina for the right to go the College Cup.

"I am just so happy for everyone involved," said junior Hermann Trophy candidate Rowland. "From (Athletics Director) Dave Hart and (Senior Associate Athletics Director) Kim Record all the way to our coaches and players, this is a credit to everyone. After everything that happened with this team in the off season, I am just so happy for everyone involved."

Florida State picked up its 20th win of the season for the first time in school history in a game that saw Cal take more shots (11-8) and put more chances on goal (7-5) but neither team was able to get on the board in the first half. In the second frame Rowland set the tone less than five minutes in as she bent a service from the far sideline to the backpost that caught the corner of the frame and bounced into the net. Trotter then cemented the game in the 86th minute with her fourth goal in three NCAA Tournament games. Cal fought back in the final minute to cut the lead in half but the Seminoles were able to run the clock out for the win.

"I thought it was a heck of a soccer game today between two teams pretty committed to going out and trying to get themselves into the round of eight," said Florida State Head Coach Mark Krikorian. "I thought in the first half Cal was better than we were. They fought harder. We weren't as prepared as we needed to be. In the second half we came out with much better focus and were able to compete a little better and score a couple of goals. This wasn't our best performance of the year and there have been two or three games where we haven't played at our highest level and still been able to win the games. That is a credit to this team."

"It was every bit of a good game that we thought it would be," said Cal Head Coach Kevin Boyd. "If you were a fan today, I'm sure you enjoyed the soccer. It was good soccer and it was competitive. It was a battle. I thought the first half we did a good job of knocking the ball around. I thought the backline played real well. We weren't thrilled with our front line. We should have been generating more dangerous chances. We had chances but not dangerous enough. Then the second half coming back down two and getting a goal in the end and continuing to battle. I thought that was a success as well."

Cal out shot FSU 8-3 in the first half but the best opportunities belonged to FSU. In the 15th minute of the game Kirsten van de Ven played a ball to Sel Kuralay. The sophomore found Trotter streaking into the Cal box all alone. FSU's All-America candidate got 1-v-1 with Bear keeper Ashley Sulprizio but was unable to put FSU in front.

"The ball hit off my shin guard," said Trotter of the missed opportunity. "I wanted to place it in the right corner but I didn't get a chance to. The goalkeeper did a really good job of cutting off the angle."

Just a minute later the Seminoles generated another dangerous chance. Viola Odebrecht won the ball 40 yards from goal. She made a run to the top of the 18 and slipped another pass between the Cal defense to Trotter. Once again Sulprizio was there as she beat Trotter to the service.

"I thought their defense was spread out and their back line liked to go forward a lot," said Trotter. "That left some gaps and Sel (Kuralay) and Viola (Odebrecht) did a great job of slipping balls through to me. That is how we created most of our chances by going right down the middle."

"Even though our performance wasn't as good as I thought it could be, we still created a couple of good chances and minimized their chances in that first half," said Krikorian. "I don't know if it was the rain or the preparation. I don't know exactly what it was. We weren't as sharp in the first half as I thought we needed to be. Certainly we give credit to Cal for part of that. They certainly came out and were inspired and did a good job. I won't use the conditions as an excuse. We just weren't sharp enough."

Although most of FSU's chances came down the middle of the pitch, it was a miraculous cross from way outside the box that changed the game. Just under five minutes out of the lockerrom Rowland gave FSU a 1-0 lead. The junior collected the ball on the right side just yards from the sideline. She laced a bending cross to the backpost looking for a teammate to latch on to the service but the cross caught the inside corner of the goal and bounced into the net putting the Seminoles in front.

"It was a wet surface and with the way the Brine ball takes off of your foot I took a chance," said Rowland of her goal. "I'll take it. Any ball that is driven at a keeper in these conditions is hard to handle. I just gave it a kick and it went in."

"What went wrong (on Rowland's goal) is probably another question," said Boyd. "We gave up that goal, where if she ever scores another one like that I would be shocked. She just drove a ball across and it happened to hit the post upper corner. It was a great goal and hats off to her. It just wasn't a very common goal."

The Seminoles continued to generate chances looking for an insurance goal but it didn't come until the 86th minute. Kuralay found a seam in the Bear backline and slipped a ball into Trotter at the top of the 18 on the right side. Trotter was in 1-v-1 with the keeper once again and this time she buried her shot over the top of Sulprizio and right down the middle.

"The goal I missed earlier was on my mind when I got that chance in the second half," said Trotter. "I got another chance and was able to finish that one. Sel (Kuralay) saw an opening and just pushed it through. I got the ball and aimed for the corner. It didn't quite go in the corner. It went in so I was happy about that."

"After that (the first goal), we started pushing and trying to get something and it opened up some holes in the back and that is how Trotter got hers," said Boyd. "She was dangerous all day anyway."

The two goals allowed by the Bear defense equaled the most they had given up all season. The only other team to score twice versus the Bears was Santa Clara in a 2-1 loss. Coming into the match Cal had surrendered just nine goals in 23 matches.

"(Assistant coach) Erica (Walsh) always says a great offense can beat a great defense and this showed our willingness to score today," said Trotter. "The chances were coming and I felt we would be able to get a goal. They are a very good team and the best defense we have seen all year. They challenged us up front but we did a good job as well of breaking them down on a few occasions."

The two second half goals boosted the Seminoles' season total to 64, which continues to build on a school record. Florida State also broke the single season record for points Sunday upping their season total to 186. Five of FSU's seven NCAA Tournament goals this year have now come in the second half.

"I thought the first goal was important but I thought the second goal was even more important," said Krikorian. "Had they scored the second goal I think it may have really changed the game but when India was able to put us up 2-0 it kind of settled the game a little bit. Obviously we didn't kill the game at the end as well as we should have and gave them a chance. It was sloppy out there and the more opportunities each team had the greater the chance a mistake could be made."

After FSU's second goal with just 4:30 remaining Cal pushed numbers forward in hopes of getting on the board. With just 37 seconds remaining they did just that. Tracy Hamm and Nkechi Kanu combined to send Katie Ratican in on the right side of the Seminole 18. The junior buried the chance but Cal was unable to mount another attack after the goal.

GOING TO THE CUP! No. 11 FSU Eliminates UNC In Shootout.

CHAPEL HILL, NC - The last time FSU and UNC played the Seminoles out shot the Tar Heels and recorded a series-high for shots on goal. They lost that game 4-1. Friday night it was the Heels who dominated the stats but FSU who is going to its second College Cup in the last three years. After a 1-1 tie, No. 11 FSU (20-3-1) eliminated the second-ranked Tar Heels (23-1-1) 5-4 in a penalty kick shootout. India Trotter scored FSU's lone goal in the 1-1 tie and Minna Pyykko saved Heather O'Reilly's PK in the shootout to help eliminate the Tar Heels.

"I want to congratulate one of our conference rivals, Florida State, for making it to the final four," said UNC Head Coach Anson Dorrance. "They never gave up in this game all the way to taking the penalty kicks. Obviously we are disappointed not to advance because I feel we played very well today. Better than the first time we played Florida State."

"We knew coming in that it would be a difficult game and difficult to establish a rhythm," said FSU's first year head coach Mark Krikorian. "I'm proud of our kids. I thought our effort was outstanding. We're pleased to move on. UNC dominated for most of the game, but our kids hung in there."

North Carolina came into the match 57-2 all-time at home in the NCAA Tournament and 17-1 lifetime versus FSU but it was the Seminoles who will advance despite the lopsided stats. The Tar Heels held a 31-7 edge in shots, a 10-1 edge in corners and put 19 shots on goal compared to just three for FSU but redshirt-junior goalkeeper Ali Mims was phenomenal all night. The Ponte Vedra Beach, FL native, in her first full season since more than 20 surgeries to repair a broken tibia in 2001, recorded a career high 13 saves in the victory.

"Usually when you have that number of shots and that number on frame you are going to sneak more than one in," said Dorrance. "That was tremendously disappointing. Give Florida State credit. Their kids scraped and figured out ways to keep it out."

"I was just doing my job out there today," said Mims. "I knew they would come at us in waves. They had a lot of shots and I had a lot of opportunities to make saves. My defense in front of me just did a phenomenal job tonight eliminating a lot of danger. I was able to do the job I was asked to do and have fun doing it."

Mims wasn't the only hero in goal for the Seminoles. After 110 minutes of heavy pressure, the FSU coaching staff made a goalkeeper change going into the shootout. The staff brought Pyykko off the bench despite the fact she had appeared in just three matches all season and played fewer minutes (106: 28) than Mims played in Friday night's game alone.

"It was something decided a long time ago," said Mims. "If we went to a shootout, Minna would go in. I had done my job so I got to sit back and watch her do hers. She did great."

Pyykko did more than great. The junior from Espoo, Finland came up with one of the biggest saves in program history. After both teams converted their first PK, all-everything forward Heather O'Reilly stepped to the PK spot. Pyykko jumped around in goal and then launched herself to the right post snaring the All-American's shot.

"The whole team did an awesome job in the field throughout the game," said Pyykko. "It was an honor for me to get a chance to play in this game and have a chance to help this team. I was a little bit nervous but for a goalkeeper in PKs the shooter has more to lose than we do.

"It is awesome to get a chance to make a contribution in a game like this. I can't find the words. Anytime I can help this team I will do it. Luckily enough I was able to help us this time."

Although the save was huge, FSU still had to make four kicks to ensure itself of advancing. One by one the Seminoles converted but the Heels did as well. That brought Melissa Samokishyn to the line. The sophomore started Friday night for just the second time since September 16 and was given the unenviable task of marking UNC's Lori Chalupny all 110 minutes. It was until seconds before the final PK that she even knew she was shooting.

"I have no idea why they (the FSU coaches) didn't tell me I was the fifth shooter until right before I shot," said Samokishyn. "I guess the coaches wanted to surprise us. They have been watching us take PKs in practice and probably had an idea of how they wanted it to go. I guess they wanted me shooting fifth."

Once again the Seminole coaching staff's instincts were right on the mark. The Littleton, CO native stepped up to the line with the shootout tied 4-4. Her kick would send FSU to the College Cup and in the first PK attempt of her Florida State career she buried it.

"I stepped up there with confidence in myself just like I was confident in the other players on my team during their PKs," said Samokishyn. "I knew I wanted to end the game right there and send us to the College Cup. I was looking for a goal and luckily it worked out for us.

"It was unbelievable to have the opportunity to send my team to the final four. It was amazing. It was a dream come true for a lot of us tonight."

For a team that saw its coach take another job in December and see all but two of its recruits stick with their commitments, the College Cup in 2005 is a dream come true. Seniors Alli Ferreri and Teresa Rivera came into the fall not even knowing who four of their teammates were before the first day of practice and now they will end their careers in College Station, TX at a College Cup for the second time in their four-year careers.

"This means the world to me," said Rivera. "I can't explain how emotional this is. Especially with everything this team went through and to still prevail and come out on top is amazing."

"This is unlike any other one," said Ferreri. "We went into Chapel Hill and left with a trip to the College Cup. That is almost unheard of. We traveled a hard road to get to the College Cup and playing a team like Carolina just makes it that much sweeter. It was a great day for this program and this group of players."

The dream of reaching the 2005 College Cup started early for FSU as just 8:25 into the match the Seminoles jumped on top. India Trotter's fifth goal of the NCAA Tournament was her second of the season versus the Heels and it put FSU up 1-0.

The play started with a long goal kick by Mims. North Carolina won the header at midfield but the momentum of the ball carried the header backwards toward UNC's goal. Trotter was there to run on to it and went in 1v1 with Heel keeper Anna Rodenbaugh. FSU's junior All-America candidate went low to the back post for her 13th goal of the season.

"One of their girls headed it backwards," said Trotter. "They play a high backline so I cheated up and received it. I was able to dribble at the keeper and was on a breakaway. I went to the lower corner and got it in.

"I knew I had to finish that one. You don't get many chances versus UNC so when you do you better take advantage. You have to capitalize. I was telling myself to stay focused so I could finish it."

Florida State held the lead for 47:59 following the goal, their longest lead ever in the series. The Heels than began to pressure and nearly evened the match. Following a UNC corner the Tar Heels had multiple shots on goal inside the six yard box that the FSU defenders kept turning away. The ball almost crossed the Seminole goal line on more than one occasion but the Heels were unable to poke the ball in.

"I never saw a series like that in my life," said Dorrance. "The ball seemed to live on their goal line for an eternity. It seemed like every player on our team had an opportunity to shoot it and they managed to block it, block it, block it and finally clear it out. If we had to point to one aspect of the game that was symbolic of our entire season, we would take that series."

After multiple shots in the middle of a scrum no more than eight yards from goal, FSU wasn't lucky enough to dodge the next bullet. Less than 12 minutes into the second half Kendall Fletcher evened the match on a header at the back post.

After Tar Heels tied the game 1-1 on Fletchers' goal in the 57th minute, neither team could break the deadlock for the next 33 minutes. Despite being out shot 31-7 for the game the match moved into overtime for just the second time in 19 meetings between the schools with the last coming in 1995. The Seminoles entered the match 2-0 in OT in 2005 and 2-0-1 all-time in overtime in the NCAA Tournament.

Both teams had great chances to end the game in extra time. Carolina's came first on a breakaway just 43 seconds into the first OT. Lindsay Tarpley got in alone on the left side of the Seminole box. Mims charged the Heels second-leading scorer and slide down low to save the shot.

"I kind of cut off the near post so I figured she would try to go far post," said Mims. "I took my chance on that and it was a 1v1. I read the play and experience led me through that situation."

Then it was FSU's chance in the second 10 minute period. Trotter who was the main offensive weapon for the Seminoles all night got in alone with the keeper but was unable to convert on two chances. Rodenbaugh came out and slide at Trotter's shot making the first save. The junior then had a chance at an open net but with defenders between her and the goal, her left footed chance went just wide at the far post.

"Oh my gosh," said Trotter reflecting on her breakaway. "I was getting some pressure from behind and I should have shot it earlier. I decided to wait and she cut the angle down really well. I had a second chance too. I hit that with my left foot and it went just wide. I was upset that I couldn't put the game away for us right there."

With the shots a much more equitable 6-4 in the OT period, the game moved into a shootout setting the stage for two unlikely FSU heroes. Pyykko was the first to step up for FSU. After UNC and FSU both made their first PKs, UNC's top goal scorer O'Reilly stepped to the PK spot. Pyykko guessed right and snared the ball to open the door for the Seminoles.

"We have been working for awhile on PKs and Minna has very good quickness and reads the play pretty well," said Krikorian. "We have been working on PKs for more than a month and have talked for a while that we would turn to Minna in this situation and let her come up with a save for us and she did that today. I thought her timing was exceptional and she showed that today."

"When you defend penalty kicks you need a good effort, concentration and a little bit of luck," said Pyykko. "I think I had all three on that save."

After Sel Kuralay, Katrin Schmidt and Teresa Rivera each converted their kicks; it was Samokishyn's turn to steal the spotlight. The midfielder did just that by ending the game with FSU's fifth straight penalty kick conversion.

"It was a team effort tonight and I was so happy to see Mel end it for us," said fellow Coloradoan Sarah Wagenfuhr. "Everyone was so willing to sacrifice everything for each other and work so hard."

"There are no words to describe tonight" added Mims. "There are no expressions to describe how it feels to be a part of this. I had watch the last time we made it to the College Cup. I was on the sidelines knowing I couldn't contribute to my team. To be able to be a part of this on the field this year is a dream come true for me and this team."

FSU's Title Hopes Come To An End In National Semifinal Versus UCLA.

COLLEGE STATION, TX - For the second time in three years the Florida State soccer team has seen its hopes of playing for a National Championship come up just one game short. The fourth-ranked UCLA Bruins (22-1-2) continued their dominant run through the NCAA Tournament Friday night with a 4-0 victory over FSU (20-4-1) in front of 6,701 fans at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. The loss put an end to the most successful season in the 11-year history of Seminole soccer.

"I am really proud of our team," said first year FSU Head Coach Mark Krikorian. "When I look at the balance of the season it is hard because I don't have a lot of perspective yet. I don't think any of us would have predicted the conclusion we came to. It's hard. It hasn't really sunk in yet after losing 4-0 to a very good team."

"First off I'd like to congratulate Florida State on an excellent season," said UCLA Head Coach Jill Ellis. "They got to this point and I watched a lot of film on them and they're a very good team. So I'd like to congratulate them on their season. I'm just very proud of my players. I thought we prepared very well. I thought we had some challenging games along the way but we're playing good soccer. Ultimately I'm pleased but now we have to move forward to Sunday."

The Bruins used a two-goal spurt in the final 6:52 of the first half to break open a game that saw FSU have more of the game through the first 20 minutes. Both goals came off set pieces. The Bruins built on the lead 13:35 minutes into the second half forcing Florida State to change its personnel in hopes of getting back into the match but they were unable to get on the board becoming the fifth straight shutout victim for UCLA in the 2005 NCAA Tournament.<> "UCLA is a good team," said Krikorian. "There were moments of the game I thought we played very well but we just weren't consistent enough in clearing balls in different situations. We gave them opportunities on two set pieces, which you just can't do to good teams. Credit to UCLA for taking advantage of that."

For just the third time all season Florida State was held without a goal. UCLA joins Virginia as the only teams this year to post a clean sheet against FSU. With its 4-0 win, the Bruins have now won their five NCAA Tournament games by a margin of 25-0 and the team now has 18 shutouts on the year.

"They are very athletic and have good organization," said Krikorian. "That combination usually means stingy defending. I think that they have good players all over the field and good athletes as well. Teams score goals because they have talented players in the right spots and prevent goals by being organized and competitive. I think UCLA certainly has those traits."

"Their backline, as Mark said, are very athletic," said Seminole junior India Trotter who was held without a goal for the first time in the tournament. "It was going to take more than just playing it behind their backline to get through. We tried get behind them tactically rather than just hitting the ball behind them but we just weren't successful. There backline being so athletic was a key to help them win today."

The game started well for Florida State as the squad generated two good scoring chances in the first 20 minutes of the match. The first came when Libby Gianeskis sent India Trotter down the right sideline. The junior got endline and served a ball to the back of the box. Mami Yamaguchi latched on to the pass and sent a driven shot to the far post but it was blocked by a UCLA defender about eight yards from the net.

The second came in the 17th minute. Yamaguchi collected the ball about 40 yards away and took a chance from distance. She laced a dipping shot that was just high over the crossbar.

Then came two costly whistles for FSU. A foul just outside the 18 helped the Bruins break on top in the 38th minute. The UCLA free kick was blocked but FSU was unable to clear the loose ball. After a scramble, Christina DiMartino got a shot off to the backpost putting the Bruins up.

With just over two minutes remaining in the half another set piece cost the Seminoles. This one came from farther out but the service found the head of UCLA star Danesha Adams. With her back to the goal, she flicked a high header that ranged over the top of Mims and bounced into the net for the second goal of the match.

"Their first and second goals were both scored off set pieces," said Mims. "On that second one, the ball was floated up in the air. I thought I could get under it. By the time I got to where the ball was going to land there were four or five people around me. UCLA's (Danesha Adams) got to it first and the header dipped right underneath the bar. It was tough. Looking back on it I probably made the wrong decision coming out but you can't go back on it now. I thought I could get to it because it was floated."

"I thought in the first half we had pretty good rhythm going," said Krikorian. "It is hard giving up goals in those time periods, right before half and right after half."

The two goals FSU gave up in the first half were the most the team had allowed in any NCAA Tournament game and the team hadn't come back from a 2-0 deficit since they defeated Duke 3-2 in overtime in Tallahassee in 2001.

"I think once we got the first goal it gave us more confidence," said Adams. "We just needed to keep pounding, keep going and not stopping, keep pounding to the end and we're just going to come through and that's what happened when we went into halftime. We were up and coach told us don't take our foot off the gas just keep going because a 2-0 lead is the most dangerous lead in soccer so just keep going after it."

The Bruins didn't let up and DiMartino got back in the action versus the Seminoles just under 15 minutes into the second period. The freshman got a clean look at the Seminole net from the top of the box on the left side. She bent a beautiful shot to the back post leaving Mims no chance to make the save. The four goals were the most ever allowed by a Seminole team in 19 NCAA Tournament games.

"We came out in the second half and did fine, created some decent chances," said Krikorian. "Probably not dangerous enough though. We had some good possession and some good movement. We just weren't quite sharp enough around the box. When they scored that third goal then it is really a very difficult situation."

With the Seminoles pushing forward in an attempt to get back in the game UCLA got back on the board. Stephanie Kron sent a great ball to the back post where Kara Lang was making a run. The Canadian National team player beat her defender to the ball and got off a shot to the back post netting the Bruins fourth goal of the match. It equaled the most goals FSU had allowed all season in a 4-1 loss to North Carolina September 22.
