Seminoles Advance To Second Round Of The NCAA Tournament With 4-1 Victory.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The 14th-ranked Florida State soccer team continued their historic season Wednesday night as they defeated Jacksonville University 4-1 in the first round of the 2000 NCAA Soccer Championships. FSU is now 13-7-2 on the season and they set the season record for wins with Wednesday's victory. FSU will travel to Gainesville Sunday to face the 11th-ranked Florida Gators for the second time this season.
"I am very excited that we won tonight," said head coach Patrick Baker. "At this time of the year it is all about survival and I think we survived tonight. Jacksonville had some great chances to score tonight, as did we, ours just happened to find the back of the net."
The Seminoles came out strong in the first five minutes of the game and they created some chances but they were unable to finish them. After that, the game settled down with both teams playing in the middle of the field. FSU out-shot JU 12-2 in the first-half but was unable to get on the board.
"We came out hard in the first ten minutes," said Amber Tollefson. "After our good start, we started to get a little bit antsy. Something just wasn't clicking for us and we were missing our shots. We went into halftime and coach Baker calmed us down and we played the way we should of."
Tollefson, a freshman from Boca Raton, got the Seminoles on the scoreboard with less then five minutes gone in the second half when she took a cross from April Murphy and buried it in the lower left corner of the goal. Tollefson also scored the first goal of the match when the Seminoles defeated the Dolphins 3-0 during their first game in August.
"We felt coming into this match that we could expose the flanks of their defense," said Tollefson. "April gave me a beautiful cross and it was bouncing right there for me. It was just the keeper and me and I was able to pop it in. We needed something to spark us and after that goal we started to pick up our play."
Just over five minutes later, All-ACC first team selection, Emma Breland, took a pass from senior Rachael Watkin and was able to escape a defender and dribbled past Jacksonville keeper, Melissa Cancio, to give the Seminoles a 2-0 lead. The goal, and an assist on the game's first score, gave Breland the Seminole record for points in a season with 30.
"I don't think about individual records," said Breland. "I play to have fun and a win like we got tonight is fun. Individual records are not important because you could play a great game and never score a goal. Our defenders go out and play awesome every game and they never get any credit. I come out and stick a goal and get all the credit. We are winning as a team and that is what is important."
FSU was able to extend their lead to 3-0 when freshman Kristin Boyce took a shot from about 18 yards away on the left side of the box and beat Cancio with a goal in the far right corner of the net. It was the defender's first goal since she scored the game-winner in overtime against North Carolina October 17.
Jacksonville was able to answer the goal just :22 later when Dolphin freshman Erika Chapman took the ball at the top left of the FSU box and turned and fired the shot into the right corner of the net beating Sarah Crawford and ending the Seminole's shut-out bid.
Crawford, a senior from Liliburn, GA, came up with big saves on numerous occasions to keep the Seminoles alive in the NCAA Tournament. She made a save in the 55th-minute when she stopped a shot by JU forward Stine Kloster by batting the ball in the air twice before pulling it down. Crawford also stopped Kloster on a one-on-one break-a-way in the 66th minute. Jacksonville's best opportunity, late in the game, came off of a free kick inside the FSU penalty box that was turned away by defender Meredith Jones.
"You have to give Sarah Crawford some credit for her play tonight" said Baker. "She closed down angles and tipped a great shot and made a fantastic one-handed save. We weren't as clean in the back as I would have liked to been but I give our group credit for settling down after the first half."
The Seminoles were able to close the game out in the 83rd-minute when Breland and Cindy Schofield put together a give-and-go in the box and put FSU up 4-1. Breland's pass beat a diving Cancio and Schofield buried her fifth goal of the season. Breland's assist added to the season points record she broke earlier in the evening.
"I don't think the things that hurt us the first time (we played FSU) hurt us tonight," said Jacksonville head coach Michael Johnson. "They (FSU) executed four good goals. I think we were a lot better tonight and we still lost by three goals."

GAINESVILLE, FL - The Florida State Seminoles (14-7-2) continued their record-breaking season Sunday as they advanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2000 NCAA Soccer Championships with a 2-1 victory over the 11th-ranked Florida Gators (16-8). The Seminoles will now head to No. 5 Clemson Friday, November 17 for a 7:00 p.m. rematch with the Tigers.
"This was just unbelievable," said head coach Patrick Baker. "This is so exciting. To have come to Gainesville last year and been soundly beaten and then have people thinking it would be a cakewalk for Florida today with their full compliment of players, its just amazing to advance and get past the Gators for the second time this season."
Florida State got off to a quick start when senior Rachael Watkin scored her fifth goal of the season in the game's sixth minute off of a cross from sophomore Cindy Schofield. The sequence started when freshman Summer Corum took on two defenders, beat them and set Schofield up for a dangerous cross to Watkin. Schofield beat the keeper with the cross and Watkin tucked the ball into the net.
"We knew the first 20 minutes were going to be crucial," said Watkin. "Last year we were down 2-0 after 10 minutes so it was important for us to get off to a good start this time. I think the goal set the tone for the entire game."
The SEC-champion Gators wasted no time in responding to the FSU goal when freshman Robin Fulton took advantage of a loose ball in the Seminoles box and put a shot past FSU keeper Sarah Crawford. The goal, just a minute and a half after the Florida State's first score, reminded many of the first match when FSU responded to the Gator's first goal in 24 seconds.
The game remained tied 1-1 through the rest of the first half with Florida out-shooting Florida State 6-3 but both teams only placed one shot on goal. Neither team took a corner in the first 45 minutes and both keepers finished the half with two saves.
The Seminoles put the pressure back on Florida when they reclaimed the lead just 2:58 into the second half. Freshman Amber Tollefson fed a ball to junior Marte Vik Edvardsen who sent a high cross through the Florida box and freshman Summer Corum rocketed a volley past the UF keeper. The goal gave FSU their second lead of the game and only their third-ever lead against the Gators.
"It was just an awesome feeling," said Corum. "I am so excited. It's overwhelming. I would never of dreamed I would hit the game-winning goal that sends us to the Sweet 16."
Florida began to play more players up-front as time wound down on their season. The Gators managed 10 shots against the Seminoles in the second half and created a few dangerous opportunities. Crawford, co-captain and the only FSU's keeper to ever play every minute of every game, came up big for Florida State all afternoon long and smothered a dangerous rebound in the 66th minute to help preserve the Florida State lead.
"Florida brought it all day long and we were able to answer all of their challenges," said Crawford. "Our defense was awesome and they played the best game of the year today. Everyone of our defenders was just awesome today."
The win marks just the second time that Florida State has defeated the Gators and both wins came this season. The Gators have now been eliminated in the second round of the NCAA tournament twice since winning the national championship in 1998.
"This was a tough loss," said Florida head coach Becky Burleigh. "I think we are better than this. FSU played well and deserved to win. This certainly was not the way we wanted to end our season."
The Seminoles now move on to the Sweet 16 where they will face a team they've already played once this season for the fifth time. The Seminoles and Tigers met September 10 in Tallahassee with Clemson scoring a game-winning goal with 1:30 on the clock. Clemson's 3-2 win was one of only two home losses for FSU this season. The match will mark the fourth time two ACC foes will play in the 2000 NCAA Soccer Championships.
"Our team plays in the best conference in the country and it's like playing in the NCAA Tournament every week," said Baker. "We got our biggest road win ever today and I would never of thought we would have achieved so much so quickly this season."

14th Ranked Seminoles fall to No. 5 Clemson 2-0 in Sweet 16.
Florida State soccer ends unprecedented run and historic season Friday night.
CLEMSON, SC - The No. 14 Seminole soccer team (14-8-2) was eliminated from the 2000 NCAA Soccer Championships Friday night when No. 5 Clemson (19-2-1) got past the Seminoles 2-0 in a third round match. The loss ended a historic season for FSU, which included the school's first-ever post-season play.
"Clemson was as good as expected tonight," said head coach Patrick Baker. "They not only played well but they forced us to play uncharacteristically. I give our team credit for never giving up and keeping the game close."
The teams played almost 40 scoreless minutes before Clemson's Tatum Clowney took a pass from Julie Augustyniak and beat Seminole keeper Sarah Crawford to give the Tigers the lead right before half. The goal was Clowney's third of the season and her second against FSU this season.
The Tigers turned up the pressure in the second half and out-shot Florida State 15-1 with six shots on goal. Clemson then added to their lead 18 minutes into the second half when freshman Allison Mitchell took a pass from sophomore Heather Beem and staked Clemson to a 2-0 lead that they would never relinquish.
"We could never manufacture anything tonight and that is a credit to their overall team speed and team defense," said Baker. "They just did a great job tonight."
Clemson becomes the first team in five tries to sweep two games from the Seminoles this season. The Tigers defeated Florida State 3-2 in Tallahassee earlier this season.
"They played very well tonight and their team speed really showed against us more tonight than it did in Tallahassee," said All-ACC first team player Emma Breland. "We got forced backwards and that made us defend in our half most of the evening. They played awesome tonight."
Florida State heads into the off-season after accomplishing more in one season than had been accomplished in the previous five seasons of the program. FSU spent every week of the 2000 season in the national rankings and enjoyed a run in the NCAA tournament that found the team in the Sweet 16 in their first tournament appearance.
"Clemson was in the Elite Eight last year and this is familiar territory for them and unfamiliar territory for us," said Baker. "We got a little taste of what post season play is like tonight and we hope we can get back to this this point, or further, next year."
