Florida State Hires Sara Tisdale To Lead Lacrosse Program.
July 29, 2024
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Sara Tisdale, an experienced developer of programs and proven winner, has been hired as Florida State's inaugural women's lacrosse head coach, Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford announced Monday.
"This is an exciting time for Florida State athletics as we welcome Sara Tisdale to lead the launch of our intercollegiate women's lacrosse team," Alford said. "She brings a wealth of experience in establishing programs and has experienced early and sustained success everywhere she's been. Coach Tisdale's focus on developing an incredible culture within her programs was evident to me during our time together at Central Michigan and reinforced through the hiring process. Her teams win on the field and prioritize academics. She will fit right in with the standard of comprehensive excellence here, and I'm very excited to welcome Sara, Becca and Emma to the Florida State family."
Tisdale, who coached the first lacrosse games at Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Augustana, comes to Tallahassee to establish FSU's lacrosse program after two seasons at Eastern Michigan.
Tisdale is 114-86 in her 12-year career and has won four regular-season conference championships and three conference tournament titles. She has coached 34 all-conference selections, three Offensive Players of the Year, one Defensive Player of the Year and three Freshman of the Year honorees. In addition to their success on the field, Tisdale's teams have been honored nine consecutive times with the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association Honor Squad recognition for their work in the classroom and produced 118 individual academic all-conference selections.
"I am humbled and honored to join the Florida State family as the first head women's lacrosse coach," Tisdale said. "I would like to thank Michael Alford and Dr. McCullough for this incredible opportunity. Building a women's lacrosse program at one of the most revered athletic and academic institutions in the country will attract elite lacrosse student-athletes to Tallahassee. The minute I stepped foot on campus it was obvious that everyone is invested in the success of Seminole student-athletes and the programs they are part of. Building Florida State lacrosse into a championship-caliber program with a culture that upholds a high standard in the classroom, on the field and in the community will be the immediate goal, and I cannot wait to get to work!"
The 2024 Eagles led the MAC in scoring offense, averaging 11.0 goals per game, and also led the conference in points per game, shots on goal per game, ground balls per game, draw control percentage and draws per game. EMU had the conference's Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year while placing three on the all-conference team and two on the All-Freshman Team. Tisdale's 2024 squad posted a five-win improvement from the program's inaugural 2023 season, ending the season tied for the highest winning percentage among MAC teams, and played in the semifinal round of the conference tournament.
Tisdale joined Eastern Michigan after starting the women's lacrosse program at Central Michigan, where she coached for seven seasons and directed the Chippewas to 54 wins, two conference championships and the 2022 MAC Tournament title that earned CMU's first NCAA Tournament berth in program history.
The 2022 team won a program-record 12 games and shared the regular-season conference championship before its conference tournament run. In 2021, CMU's first season in the MAC, the Chippewas' nine wins included a victory over Oregon. Tisdale oversaw the development of the MAC Offensive Player of the Year in both 2021 and 2022 as Natalie Karlen earned the honor in 2021 and Audrey Whiteside followed in 2022.
In 2019, Central Michigan set program records for goals, points, shots, shots on goal, draw controls and saves. Jocelyn Lamay was named the Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Year, the program's first such honoree. In 2018, the Chippewas brought home the program's first conference championship by posting a 4-1 SoCon mark during a season that included a program-record six-game winning streak.
Tisdale became the head coach at Central Michigan in the summer of 2014 and began preparations for the first season of competition in 2016. Prior to CMU, she was hired in 2010 to develop the program at Augustana College in Illinois.
In three seasons at Augustana, Tisdale boasted a 51-8 record, including a dominant showing in 2014. That year, the Vikings won their first 19 games and led all Division III schools in scoring margin and total points. Augustana won the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference regular-season and tournament championships for the second straight season and advanced to the third round of the Division III NCAA Tournament. Tisdale was named the MWLC and Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year. The 2013 team swept the MWLC regular-season and tournament titles in its second year as a program and first as an MWLC member. Tisdale's first team in 2012 put together a 15-3 campaign while playing as an Independent.
Tisdale earned her bachelor's degree in education from Central Michigan in 2006. She and her wife, Becca, have one daughter, Emma.
The Florida State women's lacrosse program will play its first season of NCAA competition in the spring of 2026.

Florida State Lacrosse Defeats Stetson 14-4 in Inaugural Game.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State lacrosse team won its inaugural game against Stetson 14-4 on Saturday afternoon at the Seminole Lacrosse Complex.
The historic game began with a ceremonial first draw between Lydia Ward and Stetson's Sydney Jenkins, who were accompanied by Florida State President Richard McCullough, First Lady Jai Virtikar and Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford.
The game began with FSU winning the opening draw control and the Seminoles went on the attack. Five minutes into the opening quarter, Summer Harrell took her first shot of the game and scored the first goal in program history to give FSU a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, the Hatters shot hit the crossbar, and a successful Seminole clear set up a Harrell assist to Meg Kenny scoring the game's second goal, as FSU went ahead 2-0.
Stetson responded and cut the lead in half halfway through the first quarter.
Ward scored a pair of goals to extend the FSU lead to 4-1. A Stetson goal concluded the first quarter with FSU holding a 4-2 lead.
Brynn Perkins earned a free position shot to begin the second quarter and scored her first career goal to extend the Seminole lead 5-2. Stetson responded again with a goal, for a 5-3 game.
The Seminoles would go on a seven-goal scoring run until the Hatters stopped the bleeding with 34 seconds left to play in the third quarter.
FSU held a 12-4 lead entering the final quarter of play. Perkins captured her second goal of the game 33 seconds into the quarter and the scoring was capped off by Amelia Brite, scoring her second goal of the game with six minutes left to play as the Noles went on to win the game 14-4.
The Seminoles were led on the offensive attack by Ward's four goals in the game. Lola Mancuso, Brite and Perkins also had multi-score games. Faith Wooters, Katherine Rathjen, Kenny, and Harrell each scored one goal in the contest.

Lacrosse Falls on the Road at Cal.
BERKELEY, Calif. - Florida State lacrosse (2-1, 0-1 ACC) fell to California (2-1, 1-0) 10-9 in its first conference game of the season Friday afternoon at California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, California.
Both offenses were stagnant to begin the contest. After 10 minutes of play in the first quarter, the Seminoles earned their first free position shot of the afternoon which was converted by Lola Mancuso, giving FSU a 1-0 lead.
A California green card gave the Noles a man up opportunity and Meg Kenny took advantage, extending the Seminoles lead. Just two minutes later, Kenny found the back of the net for her second goal of the afternoon, and FSU held a 3-0 lead.
The FSU defense shut out Cal for the first 20 minutes of the contest, until a Golden Bear goal cut into the Seminole lead with 10 minutes remaining in the half.
Kenny responded for FSU, scoring her third goal of the game. California answered with two goals of their own before Kenny caught fire again, with four first-half goals to give the Seminoles a 5-3 lead. Summer Harrell extended the lead 6-3 with a goal right before halftime.
California went on to score three unanswered goals in the third quarter to tie the game at 6-6. Harrell scored her second goal of the game to give the Seminoles the lead, but one minute later the Golden Bears retaliated to enter the fourth quarter tied 7-7.
Two quick fourth quarter goals kept the game deadlocked 8-8 until Cal scored its second goal of the period to take a 9-8 lead.
Trailing for the first time this season, Lydia Ward drew a foul to earn a free position shot which she would convert to tie the game 9-9.
Cal scored with 1:38 remaining in the game to earn the 10-9 victory.
Kenny scored four goals in the game, to give her seven on the year. It is FSU's second four-goal scorer of the season. Harrell would finish with two goals on just two shots while also recording two assists.

Lacrosse Falls at Louisville.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Florida State lacrosse team (2-6, 0-4 ACC) fell 15-5 to Louisville (3-4, 1-3) on Wednesday
afternoon at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky.
The game began with the Cardinals scoring two quick goals. Alyssa Deacy answered with a strike from the 8-meter arc with a feed from Brooke Long to make it a 2-1 game.
Due to inclement weather in the area, the game was delayed for an hour and 50 minutes.
Out of the delay, Louisville scored eight straight goals to take a 10-2 lead. With 8:02 remaining in the half, Brynn Perkins ran around the back of the crease and found space to score her ninth goal of the season. The Seminoles trailed 12-2 at the break.
Summer Harrell scored her ninth goal of the season in the third quarter, but the Cardinals tallied two more goals to extend their lead 14-3.
Meg Kenny opened the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal, her team-leading 13th of the season. Following another Cardinal goal, Deacy mirrored her first-half goal, firing another shot from the 8-meter line and finding the top of the net to score her second goal of the game.
Julia Ward recorded a career-high and single-game program-record 11 saves in the net for FSU.

Kenny Tallies Five as Seminoles Down Kent State 14-5.
KENT, Ohio - The Florida State lacrosse team (4-11) secured its first road win in program history with a 14-5 victory over Kent State (6-7) on Tuesday afternoon at Dix Stadium.
Sophomore Meg Kenny led the way for FSU, tying a program record with six points and matching the single-game record with five goals. The outing marked her first career five-goal game and her seventh multi-goal performance of the season.
Freshman attacker Summer Harrell also tied a program record with six points, recording a career-high four assists to go along with two goals. Her four assists mark just the second time this season a Seminole has reached that total in a single game.
Sophomore midfielder Lydia Ward added four points with two goals and two assists, notching her team-leading third multi-assist game of the year.
Florida State featured a balanced offensive effort with seven different goal scorers. Junior midfielder Alyssa Deacy recorded her third two-goal game of the season, while freshmen Amelia Brite, Brynn Perkins, and Emily Barnett each found the back of the net.
Junior attacker Faith Wooters matched her career high with eight draw controls, while senior defender Superia Clark led the defense with career highs in both caused turnovers (4) and ground balls (5). Clark continues to lead the team with 23 caused turnovers on the season.
As a team, the Seminoles set single-game highs in assists (10), shots on goal (30), and clears (25).
Florida State wasted no time getting on the board, scoring its fastest goal of the season just 46 seconds into the game as Harrell connected with Brite. Kenny followed with the first of her five goals, assisted by Ward, before Ward added another goal less than one minute later off a feed from Kenny. Wooters then found Deacy cutting to the goal, and Kenny added another score to cap a 5-0 run in the opening 6:45. Kent State closed the quarter with two goals to make it 5-2.
Deacy opened the second quarter scoring with her second goal of the game, and after a six-minute scoring drought, Kenny completed her first-half hat trick to extend the lead to 7-2. Both teams traded goals in the final minute of the half, giving Florida State an 8-3 advantage at the break.
Ward opened the second half with a goal, driving from the 8-meter arc to the crease for a goal less than two minutes in. Kent State responded, but the Seminoles answered with the final two goals of the quarter to take an 11-4 lead into the fourth.
Kenny added her fifth goal early in the fourth quarter, courtesy of Harrell's fourth assist of the game. Barnett converted a free-position opportunity, and Perkins added an unassisted goal en route to the 14-5 win.

Seminoles Fall to No. 9 Clemson in Regular Season Finale.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State lacrosse team (4-11, 0-9 ACC) fell 16-7 to No. 9 Clemson (13-4, 7-3) on Thursday afternoon at the Seminole Lacrosse Complex.
Sophomore midfielder Meg Kenny led the Seminoles with four points, recording two goals and two assists. Kenny closed the regular season with a team-high 43 points on 30 goals and 13 assists, adding her eighth multi-goal game and third multi-assist performance of the year.
Freshman attacker Summer Harrell also turned in a strong outing, finishing with two goals and one assist for three points. Harrell ended the regular season second on the team with 37 points (26 goals, 11 assists) and recorded her eighth multi-goal game of the season.
Brynn Perkins, Brooke Long and Lydia Ward each added a goal for Florida State, while senior defender Erin Schaefer contributed a strong defensive effort with two caused turnovers and four ground balls.
The Seminoles opened the game with a 2-0 lead, as Harrell assisted Perkins on the game's first goal before Kenny set up Harrell less than 30 seconds later. The FSU defense held Clemson scoreless for the first 10:52, but the Tigers closed the quarter with four straight goals to take a 4-2 lead.
Florida State kept pace in the second quarter, matching Clemson with four goals. After an early Tiger score, Long assisted Kenny to make it 5-3, then converted a free-position opportunity to cut the deficit to one. Clemson answered with two goals before Kenny capitalized on a free-position chance following a yellow card. Kenny later connected with Harrell again to bring FSU within one, but Clemson netted the final goal of the half to take an 8-6 lead into the break.
The third quarter turned into a defensive battle, with Clemson scoring the only three goals to extend its lead to 11-6 heading into the fourth.
Ward accounted for Florida State's final goal with 48 seconds remaining, scoring unassisted for her 18th of the season.
