Joe Piane Invitational, 5th place

Best Times Pace Women's XC at Joe Piane.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The RV/RV Florida State cross country teams competed at the historical Joe Piane Invitational on Friday morning at the Notre Dame Golf Course.

Running in ideal conditions, the women's team finished in fifth place with a total of 175 points, just behind four top 10 teams that included No. 1 NC State (55), No. 3 New Mexico (68), No. 10 Alabama (70) and No. 8 Notre Dame (146).

The Seminoles finished ahead of No. 27 Oregon State (256) and every other team that received votes in the week three USTFCCCA poll.

"The ladies absolutely showed up to compete today," FSU women's distance coach Baylee Mires said. "To place fifth at this meet with so many top contenders in the country is an incredible place to be. I'm really excited about the momentum we are building as a group and we can't wait to compete again in two weeks at Wisconsin."

Eight of the nine Noles that raced turned in personal best times at the 5K distance, led by Emmy Van den Berg, who crossed the line in 17th place at 16:24.7. Alyson Churchill followed shortly behind in 22nd (16:33.9) and Agnes McTighe took 35th at 16:49.2.

Yasmine Abbes finished 51st (17:05.5) and Caitlin Wilkey followed in 53rd (17:07.0) to round out the scoring five. Rebecca Pottorff (17:14.8) and Rebecca Bergnes (17:15.5) were included in FSU's top seven, finishing in 68th and 69th place.

Churchill, McTighe, Pottorff, and Riley Bahr (17:31.8) all turned in their fastest Notre Dame Golf Course 5K times.

Fearghal Curtin continued to shine, leading the Noles in the men's 5-mile race at 23:24.7 for fifth place.

Curtin started the race in the lead pack and paced with the top runners throughout the entire 5-mile run.

Zach Leachman turned in his best 5-mile race time, finishing in 49th place (24:11.5) followed by Cooper Schroeder in 59th (24:16.0), who also ran his best time.

Paul Stafford (24:21.3) finished in 65th place and Zach Cloud rounded out the scoring five in 89th at 24:34.36.

As a team, the Seminoles finished in 11th place with a score of 267 points.

"It was a tough one for our guys," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "Jacob (Holmes) got knocked down and Gabe (Curtis) lost a shoe, all in the first third of the race. Fearghal was truly outstanding today. That performance was a top 10 national performance for him. As a team, we have to learn from this experience and be on our game at Wisconsin."

Career Bests Power Noles at FSU Invite.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The NR/No. 24 Florida State cross country teams competed in the sole home meet of the season on Friday at the Apalachee Regional Park. Racing in ideal conditions, the Noles certainly excelled on their home course as nine scoring runners logged personal best collegiate times.

The men took second place, scoring 87 points in the 8K, led by redshirt junior Matthew Newland in seventh place. His time of 24:34.9 was a personal best along with Anderson Ball (24:46.7), Coleman Cronk (24:58.6), and Wynne Thomas (25:04.1).

Ball finished next in 14th followed by Colby Otero in 18th, Cronk in 21st, Thomas in 27th, and Matthew Owens in 59th (25:42.4).

"I was really pleased with the guys," said head coach Bob Braman said. "Several of these guys have a chance to be on our ACC team, so we looked at this race as a hard effort and we trained through it and ran hard. Most of the guys ran personal bests on tired legs. Our depth is even better than we thought it would be."

Dani Thompson spearheaded the women to a fourth-place finish in the 5K with her personal-best time of 17:56.0, landing her at 14th place among the field. Abby Schrobilgen (18:25.6), Haley McCloskey (19:13.4), Paola Bencosme (19:25.5), and Sarah Magee (20:27.7) also recorded personal records.

Junior transfer Anna Sentner (18:12.8) continued her positive start to the season for the Noles with a 22nd-place finish. Freshman Jane Eiselstein (18:20.30) finished not far behind in 27th followed by Schrobilgen in 34th (18:25.6) and Annika Pfaff in 68th (18:54.5) to round out the scoring.

"It was so great to be on our home course," explained women's distance coach Baylee Mires. "We had multiple ladies run 20 to 30 seconds better than they've ever run. It's a great step in the right direction for the squad. Dani Thompson broke 18 (minutes) for the first time, ever, so that was a big win. It's just fun to be able to come out and perform on a course where we train all the time."

Noles End Regular Season at Nuttycombe Invite.

MADISON, Wisc. - Known as the most competitive and toughest race in the regular season, the NR/No. 24 Florida State cross country teams closed out the 2022 regular season at the Nuttycombe Invitational, which was held on Friday at the Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wisconsin.

The 24th-ranked women's team stepped to the line for the 6k race alongside 35 other teams. FSU was one of the 28 squads carrying a national ranking or receiving votes.

In a field of 263 runners, the Seminoles were aggressive at the start as three runners went out with the lead pack.

Alyson Churchill paced the Noles, crossing the finish line in 51st with a time of 20:33.0, which was her personal best.

Emmy Van den Berg followed in 83rd at 20:46.9 ahead of Agnes McTighe (20:57.5) in 111st. Rebecca Pottorff was the fourth runner for the Noles at 21:19.3 (167) and Caitlin Wilkey rounded out the scoring (186), posting a time of 21:28.40, which was just off her career-best (21:26.5).

"Our ladies did what I asked of them today," FSU women's distance coach Baylee Mires said. "They went out hard and we were fearless through 3k. We have been working really hard the last few weeks, so this was a tough course and tough conditions on tired legs. We will be better in two weeks."

Facing a similar caliber field in the men's 8k, Fearghal Curtin led the Noles, finishing in 54th place with a time of 23:48.4. Zach Leachman followed at 24:29.5 (162), just off his personal best.

Cooper Schroder was the third runner in at 24:34.2 (173) ahead of Paul Stafford at 24:56.4. Samuel Field returned to the lineup and was the fifth scoring runner at 25:03.4.

"Obviously it was a really tough day for our guys," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "They might be a little overtrained, but we'll need to freshen up and get ready for ACCs. I still believe we can rally and make nationals, but we have to go out and prove it."

The women's team finished 24th with a score of 588 points, picking up ranked wins over No. 23 Utah State in 28th and No. 30 Harvard in 29th. The men placed 30th at 788 points.
