Florida State took first place in both the men's and women's races at the Covered Bridge Open hosted by Appalachian State.
Boone, NC - The Florida State men's and women's cross country teams saw their first action of the season as they swept the Covered Bridge Open in Boone, N.C. This is the second year in a row that both the men's and women's teams have won the Covered Bridge Open to begin their season.
Senior Andrew Lemoncello (St. Andrews, Scotland/ Stirling) and sophomore Laura Bowerman each took home individual meet titles and helped the Seminoles to 29 and 38-point wins, respectively. The men's team edged out Appalachian State by four points whereas the women's squad beat out their next closest competition, Davidson, by 13 points.
On the men's side, FSU took four of the top five spots. Lemoncello crossed the finish line to win the meet title in 25:41.62. Senior Sean Burris (Rockledge, FL/ USF) was close behind him as he finished in second place (25:48.63). Junior Tom Lancashire (Bolton, England/ Turton) was the next Seminole to cross the finish line as he took home fourth place (25:57.37). In his first race as a Seminole, junior Phil Nichols (Wolverhampton, England/ Birmingham) finished the race in 25:58.37, good for fifth place. Eric Critzer (Falmouth, MA/ Flamouth) rounded out Florida State's scoring as he finished in 19th with a time of 26:58.93.

Senior Andrew Lemoncello and sophomore Laura Bowerman led the Florida State men's and women's cross country teams to their second consecutive team championships this season.
Tallahassee, Fl - The Florida State men's and women's cross country teams continued to impress as they each won team championships for the second time this season. The No. 20 FSU men's team had a season low 26 points en route to their victory. Auburn was their next closest competition and they finished 23 points behind the Seminoles. The No. 32 FSU women's squad recorded a season low 33 point win and finished 60 points ahead of their next closest competition Texas A&M.
Senior Andrew Lemoncello (St. Andrews, Scotland/ Stirling) claimed his second consecutive meet title of the season. Lemoncello got out to an early lead and never looked back as he finished the 8K in 24:39.51.
"I knew it was going to be a good work out today," said Lemoncello. "It was my first time running this week. We had a good chance to see what we have to work with as a team. We have five really strong guys that can be up there in the big races now."
The 2004 ACC Champion was followed closely by Sean Burris (Rockledge, FL/ USF) who finished the race in 25:07.40. Coming down the final stretch Burris was in the fourth position but he ran down the Auburn runner ahead of him to finish the race in third place.
"He was in our region and I didn't want another guy from our Region beating me," said Burris. "I just went out there and put a good hard effort in."
Junior Tom Lancashire (Bolton, England/ Turton) was the next Seminole to finish as he claimed fifth place in 25:15.35. Junior Phil Nichols (Wolverhampton, England/ Birmingham) and senior Kevin Cook (Fern Park, FL/ Lyman) rounded out the Seminoles' scoring as they each finished in 25:36.85 and 25:38.74, good for eighth and ninth place, respectively.
"The guys ran very well," said head coach Bob Braman. "Kevin Cook is really rounding into form at the right time. Phil Nichols is over coming some injuries and he looked good. Those two guys backing up Tom, Sean and Andrew today was really good. If Luke (Beevor) gets back into form then we can be a pretty special team. Right now we are in the process and to come up with five in the first nine today was probably more then I expected."
Sophomore Laura Bowerman (Temple Terrance, FL/ King) led the women's team as she finished in third place (17:56.45) and only 18 seconds behind All-American Angela Homan from Auburn and eight seconds behind former FSU cross country star and former All-American Natalie Hughes, who ran the race unattached.
"Our team ran really well today," said Bowerman. "We were all up there working together trying to past people and we finished off strong."
Junior Jessica Crate (Brights Grove, Ontario/ Arizona State) was right on Bowerman's heels as she crossed the finish line in fourth place (18:01.26). Junior Abbie Wilshire (Bristol, England/ Birmingham) had an impressive debut for the Seminoles as she finished the 5K in 18:12.90, good for seventh place. Freshman Lydia Willense (Forest, Ontario/ St. Christopher) ran another solid race for the Seminoles as she took 13th place in 18:24.01. Junior Kara Newell rounded out Florida State's top five as she claimed 15th place in 18:36.59.
"I was really please with the ladies," said Braman. "Jessica Crate had as good as a race as anybody. Laura (Bowerman) was her usual self as she led the pack and also trained really hard prior to race. Abbie Wilshire's first race as a Seminole was very strong. She is still getting adjusted to the training but was a solid number three for us. Lydia Willemse and Kara Newell did a great job for us as well. Kirsten Hagen is a lot like Laura in the fact that she is just training so hard and she is going to get better as the season on. I think we up our stock a little bit today."

The Florida State No. 17 men's team finished in seventh place of 33 teams with 255 points and the women's team finished in 13th place of 36 teams with 371 points.
Terre Haute, Ind. - The Florida State No. 17 men's and women's cross country teams made a huge impact at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday, October 15, 2005. The men's team finished in seventh place of 33 teams with 255 points and the women's team finished in 13th place of 36 teams with 371 points.
"I felt like we had solid efforts on both sides today," said head coach Bob Braman. "The women should be ranked third in the regional now and the men should be a solid number two. They are getting better and have trained hard. We made a lot of progress today."
The men's team finished 6 points ahead of their next closest competition, No. 21 Indiana, who finished in 8th place with 261 points. The women's team finished 75 points ahead of their next closest competition, LaSalle, who finished in 14th place with 446 points.
Stanford won the men's 8K with 89 points and Michigan won the women's 6K with 86 points.
Senior Andrew Lemoncello (St. Andrews, Scotland / Stirling) finished the race in fourth place with a time of 23:49, one second shy of tying his collegiate personal best 8K. At the 2004 Notre Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Lemoncello ran a collegiate personal best 8K of 23:48.
Senior Sean Burris (Rockledge, Fla. / USF) was the next Seminole to cross the finish line, as he placed 37th in a time of 24:27. Junior Tom Lancashire (Bolton, England / Turton) also crossed the finish line with a time of 24:27 in 39th place. Junior Phil Nichols (Wolverhampton, England / Birmingham) was just seconds behind Burris and Lancashire as he finished the 8K in 24:43 in 60th place. Sophomore Luke Beevor (Luton, England / Icknield) rounded out the Seminoles' top five as he placed 115th with a time of 25:14.
"I feel like we did a really good job through four, and we are getting there at five, six and seven," said Braman. "There was a big gap between the fourth and fifth spots today and that is how Virginia beat us there by 3 points. So at the conference meet that puts Virginia there as the favorite and that puts us right there behind them."
Sophomore Laura Bowerman (Terrance Temple, Fla. / King) set a collegiate personal best 6K with a time of 20:41 as she finished in seventh place. Bowerman's previous collegiate personal best 6K was 21:19.70 which she ran at the 2004 NCAA South Regional Champions in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Junior Abigail Wilshire (Bristol, England / Birmingham) was the next Seminole to finish as she took 69th place with a time of 21:48. Freshman Lydia Willemse (Forest, Ontario / St. Christopher) was steps behind Wilshire as she finished in 21:52, good for 76th place. Sophomore Kirsten Hagen (Blacksburg, Va. / Christiansburg) and freshman Amanda Hahn (Gainesville, Fla. / Gainesville) rounded out Florida State's scoring as they finished in 95th place (22:07) and 124th place (22:25), respectively.
"We are pretty excited about the up coming championship season and that is where our focus is," said Braman. "I think we are right where we need to be."

The Florida State men's team finished second for the third year in a row while the women's team placed seventh at the 2005 ACC Cross Country Championships.
Tallahassee, Fla. - Florida State senior Andrew Lemoncello (St. Andrews, Scotland / Striling) won his second consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Individual Championship on Monday, October 31, 2005 and led the No. 19 men's squad to a 38 point second place finish. The Florida State women's team finished the conference meet in seventh (196 points).
"I see a lot of positives," said head coach Bob Braman. "We had four in the top ten which has never happened at Florida State. Phil (Nichols) really stepped up today and got up there with the lead group. Kevin Cook had a big PR. We really closed the gap between our third and fifth runners."
"I knew exactly what I wanted to do," said Lemoncello. "The course played right into my hands. This year I went in knowing that I had run faster than everyone. I wanted to go in and control the race and that was exactly how it went."
This was the third year in a row that the men's team has finished in second place. Their score of 38 points is the lowest in school history and is the lowest point total ever for a team finishing in second place in an ACC Cross Country Championship since FSU joined the ACC in 1991.
"We have solidified our team for nationals," said Braman. "If we finish top three or four at regionals then we will be okay but if we ran like we did today then we could win regionals."
Lemoncello's time of 23:43.1 in the 8000m was the fastest in FSU history and also a new collegiate personal best for him. The previous fastest time in FSU history was held by Larry Greene (23:47 -1980). Lemoncello's previous best was 23:48 which he ran on October 1, 2004 at the Notre Dame Invitational.
"I really did not expect to run a personal best on this course since it isn't very fast," said Lemoncello. "I feel like I'm improving every week and if I'm running as fast as I am then that should bode well for regionals and nationals."
The next Seminole to finish was junior Tom Lancashire (Bolton, England / Turton) who took third place with a time of 23:51. Junior Phil Nichols (Wolverhampton, England / Birmingham) finished ninth (24:12.6) and senior Sean Burris (Rockledge, Fla. / USF) took tenth (24:13.4). Senior Kevin Cook (Fern Park, Fla. / Lyman) rounded out FSU's scoring as he finished 15th in 24:26.4.
Lemoncello, Lancashire, Nichols and Burris earned 2005 All-ACC honors for their top 14 performances. It is the second year in a row that FSU has had four All-ACC performers. In 2004, Lemoncello, Lancashire and former Seminoles Eddy Rodriguez and Ian Hornabrook received the honor.
On the women's side, Sophomore Laura Bowerman (Temple Terrance, Fla. / King) was the first Seminole to finish the 5750m course as she took 17th place (20:07.9). Junior Abbie Wilshire (Bristol, England / Birmingham) was the next Seminole to cross the finish line as she claimed 39th with a time of 20:42.7. Freshman Lydia Willemse (Forest, Ontario / St. Christopher) and Kirsten Hagen (Blacksburg, Va. / Christiansburg) finished 46th (20:56.0) and 47th (20:58.8), respectively. Junior Jessica Crate (Brights Grove, Ontario / Arizona State) rounded out the Seminoles' top five as she finished in 52nd (21:06.5).
Virginia won the men's title with 30 points while Duke won the women's championship with 20 points.

Florida State Men's Cross Country Finishes Second while Women Take Third in NCAA South Regional
The FSU men's team clinched an automatic bid to
the NCAA National Championships while the women's squad still has a chance at an at-large bid.
Gainesville, Fla. - The Florida State No. 22 men's cross country team locked up an automatic bid to the NCAA National Championships after finishing in second place at the NCAA South Regional in Gainesville, Fla. on Saturday, November 12. The women's team finished in third place with 118 points and still has an opportunity to receive an at large bid.
"It was a really good day," said head coach Bob Braman. "I think that we really ran our toughest race of the year for both teams."
The men's team finished with 47 points and only seven points behind Alabama. The Seminoles were led by senior Andrew Lemoncello (St. Andrews, Scotland / Striling) who finished the 10K in second place with a collegiate personal best time of 29:42.22. Junior Tom Lancashire (Bolton, England / Turton) was the next Seminole to finish as he took seventh with a time of 30:24.06. Senior Sean Burris (Rockledge, Fla. / USF) crossed the finish line in 13th (30:40.15) and was followed closely by junior Phil Nichols (Wolverhampton, England / Birmingham) who took 14th (30:46.88). Senior Kevin Cook (Fern Park, Fla. / Lyman) rounded out the Seminoles scoring as he took 20th in 31:13.26.
"That was the best performance that my men's team has ever had since I have been at Florida State," said Braman. "It was a top ten type effort for our guys. Our seniors Burris, Cook and Lemoncello just did phenomenally well and obviously Nichols and Lancashire ran well, but I have to hand it to those three seniors for stepping up and really making the difference. Those guys ran at their absolute best."
Lemoncello, Lancashire, Burris, Nichols and Cook earned All-South region honors for their top 25 finishes. Sophomore Luke Beevor (Luton, England / Icknield) finished just four spots outside of the All-Region team in 29th with a time of 31:40.77 and classmate Chris Nickson (Pensacola, Fla. / Booker T. Washington) was the Seminoles' final participant as he took 61st place with a time of 32:52.73.
The women finished just 20 points behind second place finisher Georgia. The Seminoles were led by two All-South region team honorees sophomore Laura Bowerman (Temple Terrance, Fla. / King) and Abbie Wilshire (Bristol, England / Birmingham). Bowerman finished the race in seventh place with a collegiate personal best 6K time of 20:52.59 while Wilshire finished 14th with a time of 21:29.50. Sophomore Kirsten Hagen (Blacksburg, Va. / Christiansburg) took 28th with a time of 22:02.75. Right behind Hagen was freshman Lydia Willemese (Forest, Ontario / St. Christopher) who placed 31st with a time of 22:06.79. Junior Jessica Crate (Brights Grove, Ontario / Arizona State) rounded out the Seminoles' scoring as she claimed 38th in 22:13.91.
Freshman Amanda Hahn (Gainesville, Fla. / Gainesville) finished in 22:27.48 while junior Kara Newell (Tallahassee, Fla. / Boston University) took 53rd with a time of 22:36.01.
"On the women's side, we almost pulled it off," said Braman. "I'm really proud of the effort that our women gave. As third place we have a chance at an at large bid but it is a hope for the best kind of situation."
If the women's team does not get selected for an at-large bid, Bowerman still has an opportunity to get selected for one of the two individual at-large selections.
