Craig entered the tournament as a wild card entry and was tasked with a top-100 ranked opponent to begin his fall campaign. Craig and Connel Advance Past NCAA Singles First Round.
November 19, 2024
By Jack Oliaro
WACO, Texas - The Florida State men's tennis team saw both singles entries advance past the first round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship. The Seminoles have had a player advance to the singles second round for a second consecutive season.
Corey Craig came into the fall season as a wild card entry at the ITA All-American Championships and used a sensational five day run as he knocked off several ranked opponents to reach the quarterfinals of the competition. The Boston University transfer was recognized as one of the UTR Sports Ones To Watch as he exceeded a 13.0 UTR rating and sealed a UTR Pro Tennis Tournament title in Japan over the summer.
Craig dropped the first set tiebreaker to Oklahoma's Oscar Lacides and faced an early elimination. He won four straight games down 2-1 and secured the second frame to force the crucial third and final set. Despite falling to a 5-2 deficit, he dominated the following two games and tied the set after winning four straight points.
He was tasked with the match tiebreaker and exchanged points back-and-forth. Lacides' second serve on match point was over the line and Craig secured his spot in the second round. Craig has collected five third-set victories for the garnet and gold and has won all but one match when dropping the first set.
Jamie Connel came into the season off a fiery run of form to end the spring season including a defiant victory on Court 3 against No. 2 Virginia to help secure the program's first-ever ACC Championship.
The All-ACC honoree entered the ITA Southeast Regional Championships as a seven seed and won his first three matches with just one dropped set before upsetting No. 14 Thomas Paulsell from Georgia in three sets. He clinched a finals berth with a dominant straight-sets win over No. 43 Martin Katz of Miami. He was the 2024 ITA Southeast Regional singles co-champion.
Connel kicked off his individual postseason debut with a dominant first set over Mississippi State's Niccolo Baroni, winning the first five matches to win the first frame 6-1. He continued his run into the next set with a 2-0 start and paced himself to a 6-4 frame to clinch his spot in the second round.
Both singles players will continue their
journeys in the singles championship tomorrow, Craig will face UCLA's Emon van Lobel Sans while Connel looks to secure a second victory this season over No. 14 Thomas Paulsell from Georgia.

WACO, Texas - Corey Craig claimed his first career ITA All-American honor by reaching the third round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship. The Seminoles have three All-Americans in one calendar year for the first time in program history.
Craig was tasked with UCLA's Emon van Lobel Sels for his second round match after completing one of his many three-set comebacks in the first round. The two exchanged service games back-and-forth at 2-2 before Craig found his rhythm and recorded two service breaks to rattle off four consecutive games and win the first set 6-2.
Craig continued his form with another four game win streak to take a demanding hold of the match and blanked his opponent in the final game to secure his spot in the third round. The Boston University transfer has ascended into one of the fastest growing stars in collegiate tennis as he was awarded his first career All-American title in his first semester as a Seminole.
Jamie Connel was also looking to secure his spot in the next round and met No. 14 Thomas Paulsell for the second time this season. Connel upset the Georgia player in the ITA Southeast Regional Championships before becoming co-champion of the tournament.
Connel shook off a tough first set by notching the opening three games of the following set and finished with three consecutive games to earn a dominant 6-1 second set. Paulsell won five consecutive games to seal his spot into the third round.
Youcef Rihane and Alex Bulte began their doubles run with a first round battle against a top-25 ranked pairing from Columbia. The Seminole pairing was able break two service games and won the first set 6-3.
Rihane and Bulte pounced on the set lead opportunity and opened with an incredible 4-0 lead in the second frame. The senior pairing made quick work of their opponent and secured their
place in the second round. This marks a second consecutive season with a Seminole pairing in the NCAA Doubles Round of 16.

The two players traded games back-and-forth in the first set before Inchauspe pulled away in the set tiebreaker. Craig had overcome five different set deficits and had dropped just one second set the entire fall campaign. Craig stormed out to an early 4-1 lead in the next frame and leveled the match at one set apiece with a 6-2 win.
Craig came into the match with an unbeaten record in third sets and continued to wear down his opponent. He won six consecutive games to seal his spot in the quarterfinals of the singles championship. Craig secured his highest ranked victory of his career and notched his sixth consecutive three set victory.
Rihane and Bulte came into the match off four consecutive doubles victories including two top-50 victories. The Seminole pairing had worked through the match and found themselves level at 3-3 before winning three straight games to close out the first set. Liberty's pairing of Joaquim Almeida and Siwanat Auytayakul responded accordingly with a 4-0 second set lead looking to equalize the match.
The Seminole pairing fought back with three games of their own while dropping just two points in that stretch. Liberty blanked the Seminoles in the following game to put themselves within touching distance. Rihane and Bulte responded with an otherworldly performance, winning four consecutive games to claim the second set, advance to the quarterfinals, and earn their spot in Seminole history. Rihane and Bulte became the 11th and 12th All-Americans in program history.
Florida State earned two All-American honors last season with Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif.
Cornut-Chauvinc earned five total All-American honors including four singles honors. Corey Craig claimed an All-American honor on Wednesday before seniors Rihane and Bulte claimed the fourth and fifth
honors of the calendar year.

WACO, Texas - The Florida State doubles pair of Youcef Rihane and Alex Bulte earned a 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (7) victory Friday to advance to the semifinal round of the doubles bracket at the NCAA Men's Tennis Individual Championships.
Rihane and Bulte extended their winning streak to six consecutive doubles contests, including all three of their matchups in the NCAA Tournament, by defeating Luciano Tacchi and Luca Pow from Wake Forest. After dropping the first set, the FSU duo pulled away from a 4-4 tie in the second set. The Seminoles took a 5-4 lead by holding serve at love and then won the deuce point in the next game to finish off the second set.
In the deciding super-tiebreaker for the third set, Wake Forest jumped ahead 2-0 before back-to-back points from FSU tied the frame at 2-2. Wake Forest won the next point and took its final lead of the match at 3-2. Rihane and Bulte responded by winning four straight points for a 6-3 lead. The next 10 points of the set were traded two at a time as Wake Forest twice cut FSU's lead to one point only to see the Seminoles pull ahead with consecutive points each time, culminating in a 10-7 final margin.
Newcomer Corey Craig, the 2024 Patriot League Player of the Year at Boston University, completed his first fall in the Garnet and Gold dropping a 6-3, 6-2 decision to No. 26 Dhakshineswar Suresh from Wake Forest in the quarterfinal round of the singles bracket. Craig, who earned the highest-ranked win of his collegiate career in the Round of 16 with a win over the nation's No. 11-ranked singles player, finishes the fall season with an 8-2 record in singles play.
All three of Florida State's
quarterfinalists have earned All-America status, giving FSU a program-record five All-Americans in the 2024 calendar year. Craig, Rihane and Bulte pushed Florida State's all-time All-America total to

FSU Seals 2025 Season Opener At Hawaii.
By Jack Oliaro
HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Florida State men's tennis team kicked off the 2025 campaign with a dominant 6-1 victory at Hawaii, claiming all six singles matches in two sets. The Seminoles have won 24 consecutive season opening matches dating back to 2002.
After dropping the doubles point, the Seminoles took complete command of the match and didn't drop a set in singles play for the first time since January 13, 2024 against Mercer. This marks two consecutive season opening matches with six two-set singles victories.
Azariah Rusher made his first career appearance on Court 5 and plowed through his match to earn the first team point of the season. Rusher won the five straight games to earn the first frame before finishing his day with six consecutive wins.
Alex Bulte began his senior season sweeping the first set of his match before pulling away and winning four straight games to claim the first lead of the season. Bulte made just his second appearance on Court 3. Fellow senior Joshua Dous-Karpenschif followed suit with a near identical match to Bulte, a first set sweep over his opponent before winning the second set 6-2.
Florida State's two incoming transfers, Corey Craig and Erik Schiessl, each made their first appearances as Seminoles and capitalized with strong performances. Craig opened the first set with five straight wins before closing out the match with six consecutive wins in the final frame to clinch the match victory. Schiessl handled his business in the first set before fending off a late charge from his opponent to win in straight sets.
Jamie Connel made his debut appearance at Court 1 and was tasked with top-100 opponent Azuma Visaya. The battle swung back-and-forth before Connel sealed the first set with two consecutive games and won six of the last seven games to earn his first career victory on the main court.

No. 9 Seminoles Complete Two Sweeps In Home Opener
By Jack Oliaro
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 9 Florida State men's tennis team completed two clinching sweeps over Florida Gulf Coast and Alabama State in its home opening matches at the Indoor Tennis Courts. The Seminoles have won 39 consecutive home opening matches dating back to 1988.
"Playing three matches in one week is always a challenge, but coming off a Hawaii match thousands of miles away and sweeping two opponents at home is rewarding," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "We played nine members of the team today and they've embraced the chances."
The Seminoles began the day with superb doubles play over Florida Gulf Coast. Youcef Rihane and Alex Bulte cruised to an early set lead before finishing the match at 6-2. The reigning NCAA Doubles semifinalists earned their first dual match victory of the season. Joshua Dous-Karpenschif and Erik Schiessl followed suit with an identical 6-2 scoreline to clinch the first point of the day.
Justin Lyons earned his first singles win of the season after a strong 6-1 first set and pulling through to win straight sets. Dous-Karpenschif took complete command to seal a 6-2, 6-1 straight sets victory. Dous-Karpenschif has won all four sets in singles play to start the year.
Jamie Connel clinched the match off a 6-1, 6-4 victory on Court 1. Connel has claimed two main court victories in one week in his first-ever appearances.
FSU carried the momentum into the afternoon match against Alabama State. The top-50 pairing of Connel and Corey Craig made their spring debut as a pairing and made quick work on Court 3 to allow Rihane and Bulte to clinch the doubles point. This marked the first appearance of three ranked pairings for FSU.
The underclassmen took their opportunities and ran with it. Lyons pulled away after a tight start in the first set before burying any chances of a Hornet comeback in the second set with a second win on the day. Lyons maintains his perfect record on Court 5, earning six career wins.
Freshman Jan Sebesta earned his first career singles victory off a dominating match, winning 12 of the 15 available games. Sophomore Azariah Rusher blitzed through the first set 6-1 before pushing through the second frame to clinch the match victory and his maiden win on Court 4.
The Seminoles have won their last nine indoor matches dating back to January 28, 2024.
