Cornut-Chauvinc, Hultquist Take Home ACC Honors. April 25, 2024 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State senior Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc is the ACC Men's
Tennis Player of the Year and head coach Dwayne Hultquist is the conference's Coach of the Year, it was announced Thursday. Hultquist led the Seminoles to their first ACC Tournament championship by
defeating No. 65 Virginia Tech, No. 11 NC State, No. 7 Wake Forest and No. 2 Virginia in consecutive days. Florida State was the first school to win four matches in four days to claim an ACC title and
also became the first school to defeat the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 seeds in the same tournament. FSU's win over Virginia snapped the Cavaliers' 62-match winning streak over ACC opponents and improved
the Seminoles to 15-2 away from Tallahassee this season. Hultquist is the ACC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career, after also earning the honor in 2018 when FSU finished with 28
wins. Cornut-Chauvinc is 23-2 overall in singles this season, including 17-2 against ranked opponents. His 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 7-5 win at No. 1 singles in the final of the ACC Tournament over the No.
4-ranked player in the country completed a comeback for FSU from down 3-1 in the team match to clinch a 4-3 victory. Cornut-Chauvinc showcased his grit in his singles match, coming back from a 5-2
deficit in the third set to win the final five games and claim the program's first ACC Tournament title. The win also completed a perfect 4-0 ACC Tournament for Cornut-Chauvinc. Cornut-Chauvinc
leapfrogged his opponent from the ACC Tournament championship match to No. 3 in the national singles rankings. The Lyon, France, native has dropped only eight sets during his 25 matches in the spring
season. Cornut-Chauvinc is the third different FSU player to be the ACC's Player of the Year, earning the program's fourth ACC Player of the Year honor, and first since 2009. He also was named
first-team All-ACC in singles for the second consecutive season. Cornut-Chauvinc and junior Joshua Dous-Karpenschif earned second-team All-ACC honors in doubles. The duo, ranked 19th nationally, is
14-10 overall this season and has played all 24 matches at the No. 1 position. It is the first all-conference doubles honor for the duo. Junior Jamie Connel joined Cornut-Chauvinc on the All-ACC
team, earning third-team all-conference honors. He is 20-5 in singles this season after completing a perfect 4-0 run through the ACC Tournament that included three straight-sets victories. Connel, who
was the Southern Conference's Freshman of the Year and a first-team All-SoCon selection at Furman that season, is on the All-ACC team for the first time in his career.

Seminoles Complete Two Sweeps on Opening Day.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 20 Florida State men's tennis team began the season spotless, sweeping Mercer and Jacksonville State in a doubleheader Saturday at the FSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
"I thought it was a good first day of playing, winning all 12 singles matches we played today and winning the four doubles that we completed," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "I thought Azariah in the first match was impressive to close out while Justin took two wins on the day, showing that the freshmen can really contribute. Yusef handled both matches fairly easily, Jamie earned a couple of wins, and Alex Bulte did really well on the day too."
Florida State earned its first point of the season as the freshmen pairing of Justin Lyons and Azariah Rusher took the first match convincingly while the French duo of Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif handled the opposition.
The 97th-ranked singles player in the country Jamie Connel and fellow junior Alex Bulte dominated as they each only dropped one of their 13 games en route to wins. Azariah Rusher made quick work in his spring singles debut to earn the match-winning point while Youcef Rihane blanked Samuel MacLeod in the second set. Justin Lyons used two 6-3 sets to power through while Loris Pourroy battled well with Nemanja Stefanovic and came out victorious.
The success carried into the second match as the Seminoles faced Jacksonville State and kept the foot on the gas with two victories to take the doubles point. Connel and Bulte notched their second doubles victory early before one of the top duos in the country, Loris Pourroy and Rihane sealed the round.
Cornut-Chauvinc and Rihane dominated in their singles matches as they only dropped five games in their play while Dous-Karpenschif played proficiently to win his match.
Connel secured himself a victory after fighting off a late run by Alin Fatu while Lyons came back after dropping the first set 0-6 and crushed the remainder of the match 6-1, 6-2. Alex Bulte also fell in the first set but fought to go to a third set and pulled away in the third-set tiebreaker.
"I thought the energy was really good and it just prepares us for what we have we got it really tough stretch here," Hultquist said.

No. 20 Florida State Falls on the Road in Top-20 Matchup.
By Jack Oliaro
STARKVILLE, Miss. - The No. 20 Florida State men's tennis team was handed its first loss of the season to No. 17 Mississippi State in a Friday afternoon matchup at the Rula Tennis Pavilion.
"I thought there's two keys to the match, we didn't play good enough in the big moments and lost three 7-5 first sets that we had chances to win," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "Up and down the line it was very tight but still a disappointing loss."
The junior pairing of Alex Bulte and Jamie Connel led their match 5-4 before the doubles point was won on the other courts.
Florida State fell in the doubles matches with three close duels. Lyon, France, natives Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif fell to the 24th-ranked doubles pairing in collegiate tennis, Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez 6-4 while Loris Pourroy and Youcef Rihane dropped their match 6-3.
Cornut-Chauvinc earned a statement victory with a straight-set 6-4, 7-5 win over Jovanovic, the 13th-ranked singles player in the country. Cornut-Chauvinc took the first set before facing the threat of a third set as he was down 4-5. From there, he rattled off three straight games to take the set and lone point for the Seminoles in thrilling fashion.
Dous-Karpenschif lost in two sets with matching 6-4 defeats in both frames.
Rihane and Connel both lost their first sets by identical 7-5 scores before falling in the following set. Connel took his opponent to the brink in each set with two 7-5 losses.
Pourroy lost his first set in a tough 7-5 finish before nearly mounting a comeback from trailing 5-0 in the second frame while Bulte won his first set but lost the remaining two sets to drop the match.
"I think mainly it's converting on a couple of the early set points we had that could've really changed the match a lot," Hultquist commented.

No. 20 Florida State Wins Thriller over Alabama.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The No. 20 Florida State men's tennis team earned its first road victory of the season over Alabama in a 4-3 classic. Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc converted the winning point and shined again on Sunday afternoon at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility.
"This is a good bounce-back win from the other day and it was always going to be a challenge to win on the road and we earned that nice victory today," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "Antoine was the one that stepped up at the end and showed why he's one of the best players in college tennis."
The doubles round was a thriller as Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif defeated the 25th-ranked pairing in the country handily 6-2 before Alex Bulte and Jamie Connel dropped their matchup in a tight 6-4 set.
Loris Pourroy and Youcef Rihane exchanged leads with their opposition on Court 2 as they were neck-and-neck and came down to a tiebreak after reaching 6-6. The 52nd-ranked pairing in collegiate tennis powered through the razor-thin margin and took the doubles point for the Seminoles off a 7-5 tiebreaker.

No. 22 Florida State Handles Oklahoma.
By Jack Oliaro
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 22 Florida State men's tennis team defeated Oklahoma 5-2 on Sunday, marking the Seminoles' third straight win over opponents in the ITA Preseason Top 25.
The doubles round came down to the wire as Azariah Rusher and Alex Bulte dropped their match 6-1 before the newly named top-40 pair of Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif handled the nation's 40th-ranked doubles duo with a 6-3 win.
All hopes lied on Court 2 with Loris Pourroy and Youcef Rihane who were down early but rattled off a few games to tie the score at 4-4. Two dominant games followed and for the third straight match, the doubles point belonged to the Seminoles.
Rihane suffered an injury during the first set in singles and continued his match but dropped the match in two sets. Pourroy used his strong momentum to efficiently work through his match with a straight-sets victory 7-5, 6-3 but then came the weather.
The rain came midway through the second set and delayed the match an hour before the teams moved to the FSU Indoor Tennis Courts and resumed.
Jamie Connel lost the first set 6-4 but quickly strung together an impressive second set and swept the final frame indoors with ease. The 90th-ranked player pulled off another come-from-behind victory to put Florida State within clinching distance.
Bulte had suffered a crushing tiebreaker loss in the second set but stormed back with a vengeance and claimed the winning point in the fiery 6-1 set for his fourth straight victory.
Cornut-Chaunvinc continued his incredible start to the season as he split the first two sets but, like the rest of the team, executed precise play in the third set. The No. 8 player in the nation took the final frame 6-1 and claimed his seventh win of the season. Dous-Karpenschif dropped his third set for the final margin.
"Out of the rain break I asked the guys to win the first 10 minutes, instead we dominated the first 10 minutes and that was the biggest part of the match," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said.

After Miami tied the match at 1-1 with a win on Court 2, Bulte played at Court 5 for the third time this season and took full charge with a convincing 6-4, 6-2 straight-sets victory. Soon after, Cornut-Chauvinc fought through a first-set tiebreaker and put the Seminoles within clinching distance after a 6-4 second set.
Connel dropped his match in three grueling sets but Rihane and Azariah Rusher were each determined to clinch the decisive fourth point. Rihane split the first two sets but dominated the early portion of the third and was up 5-2 while Rusher won a long 7-5 first set and found himself in a second-set tiebreaker.
Rihane's match finished first as he clinched the final point in a 6-3 third set while Rusher was left one point away from his fifth win of the season. Rihane has now won five straight singles matches.
Florida State finishes the regular season 17-7 and 7-5 in the ACC.

No. 17 Florida State Downs Hokies in ACC Second Round.
By Jack Oliaro
CARY, N.C. - The No. 17 Florida State men's tennis team downed Virginia Tech 4-1 in the second round of the ACC Championship on Thursday and advanced to the quarterfinal round for the 11th straight ACC Tournament.
"I thought it was good that Alex (Bulte) earned the second set to reestablish our momentum and Loris (Pourroy) did a great job of bouncing back and sealing the match in a great effort today," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said.
The day began with a tight doubles match with games exchanged back-and-forth. The Hokies took the match on Court 1 before newly-ranked Loris Pourroy and Youcef Rihane dominated their match with a 6-2 victory. Virginia Tech took the doubles point off the win on Court 3.
The response to the setback was timely as Florida State began the singles round winning five first sets, including a 6-0 blanking by Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc at No 1. Cornut-Chauvinc, the nation's No. 5-ranked singles player pushed through a 6-4 second set to tie the match up at 1-1.
The momentum was in full effect as Jamie Connel battled through the first frame 7-5 to slam the door shut with a 6-1 second set to take the lead. Joshua Dous-Karpenschif followed suit with one of his most complete performances of the season, dropping just six games across two sets to put FSU within one win of advancing.
The east end of the courts all went the distance as Pourroy, Rihane, and Alex Bulte battled to three sets each. Pourroy overcame a tough end to the second set and bolted past his opponent in the third to seal the final point. Rihane and Bulte's matches were left unfinished.

Florida State Wins First-Ever ACC Championship.
By Jack Oliaro
CARY, N.C. - The No. 17 Florida State men's tennis team claimed its first-ever ACC Championship with a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over back-to-back defending national champions and No. 2-ranked Virginia on Sunday afternoon. The Seminoles snapped Virginia's 62-match winning streak over ACC opponents dating back to February 13, 2021.
The day began with a strong performance in the doubles round from Alex Bulte and Jamie Connel. The pair won three straight games off a 3-2 lead to put the Seminoles within reach. Virginia took the doubles point by claiming victories at Courts 1, 2.
Virginia extended its lead to 2-0 with a straight-sets win on Court 5 before Connel put together one of his finest performances of the season as he defeated the No. 51 player in the nation in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (0) to put the Seminoles on the board.
Youcef Rihane played a tight three-set match but ultimately dropped his match to the 45-ranked singles player in America to put Virginia within one point of the championship.
Loris Pourroy strung together a dominant 6-2 first set before dropping the second to set up the deciding set. Pourroy used incredible variation in his play to defeat the No. 36 player in the nation 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 to put FSU back within one. The next player to stet up was Bulte as he fought from a set down and dropped only five games in the final two sets to tie the match at 3-3.
The attention turned towards Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and UVA's Chris Rodesch. The titanic battle between two top-five players in the nation would decide the ACC Championship. Cornut-Chauvinc won the first set tiebreaker 7-4 before Rodesch responded with an identical second set tiebreaker 7-4. Rodesch began the championship set up 5-2 and one game of Virginia's fourth straight conference title.
Cornut-Chauvinc displayed one of the greatest moments in the tournament's history as he won five straight games to give the Seminoles their first-ever ACC Championship with a 7-6 (4), 6-7 (4), 7-5 victory. Cornut-Chauvinc, who was 4-0 in the ACC Championships to improve to 23-2 in singles this season, was named the Championships MVP.

No. 10 FSU Advances To Super Regionals.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 10 seed Florida State men's tennis team advanced out of the Tallahassee Regional with a 4-1 victory over UCF on Saturday. The Seminoles will make their second Super Regional appearance in the last three seasons and are among the last 16 teams remaining in the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in program history.
"We had a great effort from our guys to bounce back from doubles," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "We lost a tight doubles point, but we started strong in singles. Once we came indoors, we really played lights-out, and all six guys were playing good. It's exciting to advance and continue the momentum that we built two weeks ago in winning the ACC Tournament. It's hard to be one of the last 16 teams remaining. There's a lot of good teams in college and you see a lot of upsets along the way. I'm thrilled for the guys to get there and want to continue working hard and have no regrets as we see how far we can go."
The match started with a competitive doubles contest that ultimately provided UCF with the match's first point. The Knights won on court 3 before Loris Pourroy and Youcef Rihanne evened the doubles competition with a 6-3 win at No. 2. UCF's 6-4 win at No. 1 gave the Knights the point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Florida State immediately jumped ahead in singles, winning the first set on all six courts. As the first sets were wrapping up, a lightning warning stopped the competition. After rain and lightning remained in the area, the match was moved indoors and resumed following a two-hour-and-10-minute delay.
Once inside, Jamie Connel made quick work of his opponent, finishing off a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 to give FSU its first point of the match. He was followed quickly by Pourroy's 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 2 and Rihane's 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 to put the Seminoles in clinching position.
Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc, the nation's No. 4-ranked singles player, gave Florida State the point it needed with his 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1. Cornut-Chauvinc is now 25-2 this season and has won eight singles contests in a row.
"What we got from Antoine, Loris, Jamie and Youcef was tremendous," Hultquist said. "Youcef was on fire in the second set, going from down 3-1 to win the last five games. Today was a day we had to dig down again, being down, and it shows how resilient this team is. They're playing hard for each other, and that's all you can ask for."
FSU also led at No. 5 and No. 6 singles when the match was clinched. Joshua Dous-Karpenschif was serving with a 6-3, 5-4 lead at No. 5, and Alex Bulte was ahead 6-4, 3-0 at No. 6.
"One of the keys in the match was Alex being down 5-3 and he ends up winning the first set," Hultquist said. "That gave us six first sets and really established the momentum for us to finish it off. I thought Josh played really well today, too. He didn't finish but he was serving for it (when the match ended)."

STILLWATER, Okla. - Florida State's Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc rolled in straight sets over Mississippi State's Nemanja Malesevic 6-3, 6-2 during Monday's first round of the NCAA Singles Championship.
"Antoine earned a really good win today and did a great job of executing the game plan," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "Winning a bunch of points early in the match really set the tone and I love the fact that he got up quick in both sets and finished strong."
Cornut-Chauvinc, the tournament's No. 3 seed, opened the match with four straight games to take an early lead before riding out the remainder of the set to win 6-3. He broke his opponent's service game three different times in the set.
The senior won four of the opening five games in the second set to put the match out of reach and finished with a fifth service break to move past the

STILLWATER, Okla. - Florida State's Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif advanced to the second round of the NCAA Doubles Championship on Tuesday afternoon after Tennessee's pair retired during the second set. Cornut-Chauvinc's singles season came to an end after a three-set battle in the second round.
"Antoine and Joshua played incredibly sharp in the first set and held strong on the deuce points that helped establish their rhythm before the unfortunate retiring of Tennessee's pair," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "Antoine has had an unbelievable singles career here at Florida State, becoming a two-time All-American, clinching this year's ACC Championship, and being one of the most special players the program has ever seen."
The Lyon, France, natives came out firing on all cylinders, quickly gaining a 4-1 first-set lead before serving out a 6-3 victory. The duo was able to snatch two service breaks in the first set before Johannus Monday and Angel Diaz retired during the second set at 1-1.
This marks the second time this matchup was unfinished in just two weeks after a thrilling 6-6 tiebreaker back in Knoxville during the third round of the NCAA Tournament was left abandoned after Florida State earned the doubles point on Courts 2 and 3.
Cornut-Chauvinc began his singles match with a dominant 6-2 first set and climbed from 3-1 down back to 3-3 in the second set. Illinois' Karlis Ozolins pushed Cornut-Chauvinc to a third set before pulling away.
Cornut-Chauvinc finishes his collegiate singles career as one the most accomplished Seminoles in the program's history. He was named 2024 ACC Player of the Year, the 2024 ACC Championship MVP after winning five straight games to clinch FSU's first ACC championship, and is a two-time All-ACC Singles First Team selection.
Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif advance to the round of 16 and will face the winner of the match between No. 23 Jacob
Bickersteth and Gavin Young of Michigan and No. 33 Gianluca Brunkow and Pablo Masjuan of UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday afternoon.

STILLWATER, Okla. - Florida State's Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif defeated UC Santa Barbara's Gianluca Brunkow and Pablo Masjuan in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon to move on to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship. Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif equal Vahid Mirzadeh and Connor Smith back in 2011 for the deepest doubles championship run in program history.
"One of the keys to the match was that we were in every single game on the return, we broke twice in the first set and three times in the second," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "We did a great job of playing aggressive and when we faced adversity we responded right away."
The FSU pair held their serve through the first few games before going on a tear, winning four straight games to close out the first set in dominant 6-2 fashion.
The momentum carried into the second set as Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif led 4-2 midway through the set. Despite the opposing pair tying the set score at 4-4, the FSU duo cranked it a notch further, winning the last five points in the match and serving out to seal the victory.
Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif's exceptional run of form midway through the match saw an unprecedented run of winning eight of nine games. The No. 13 pair in the nation
earned their eighth nationally ranked victory of the season and claimed All-American accolades by reaching the quarterfinal round.

STILLWATER, Okla. - Florida State's Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif made history as the first Seminole pairing to reach the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship after defeating Arizona State's Jacob Bullard and Murphy Cassone in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (6) on Thursday afternoon. This marks the furthest any FSU competitor has ever advanced in the NCAA Individual Championships.
"It was an incredibly tough battle and very windy, but the rain delay helped us to clear our minds and execute with more aggression which has been successful for us," Cornut-Chauvinc said.
The FSU pair played a very cool and collected first set, holding their serve throughout the frame and finding a crucial break point to win the set 6-4.
The Seminole duo dropped their first set of the competition in the following frame 6-2 to set up the deciding 10-point tiebreaker.
Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif were down 2-1 before a brief rain shower halted play for a short period of time. After the delay, the pair unleashed some powerful play and regained the lead at 3-2 before extending their advantage to three at 7-4.
The Florida State duo outlasted their opponent and took a 10-6 victory in the tiebreaker. Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif earned their ninth ranked victory of the season and became the first Seminoles to advance to the semifinals of any NCAA Championship.
"We didn't play our best match but we connected well and found our momentum at the right time," Dous-Karpenschif
said.

STILLWATER, Okla. - Florida State's Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif punched their ticket to the NCAA Doubles National Championship match after defeating Texas' Eliot Spizzirri and Cleeve Harper in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 on Friday afternoon. This continues Florida State's deepest run in the NCAA Individual Championships and marks the first national championship appearance in program history.
"I thought we returned really well today and we were in almost every return game, breaking our opponent several times which in college matches is rare," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "We set the tone right away and both players did a great job of putting themselves in great positions."
The FSU duo began the first set with a signature break point in game one before marching out to a 4-1 lead early. They managed the remainder of the set to win 6-4, maintaining a perfect 4-0 mark in first sets during the NCAA Doubles Tournament.
They carried that momentum in the following frame with a fiery 4-0 start to the second set, winning five straight games and two service break games. The Texas pair crept back into the set with three straight games of their own at 4-3.
Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif dug deep once again and flipped the switch on momentum with two straight aces to claim a 5-3 lead before earning the fifth and final break point to send themselves to the championship.
The Seminole
pairing earned their fourth consecutive and 10th nationally-ranked win of the season.
