FSU Places Two On All-ACC Teams.

May 1, 2023

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State men's tennis had two players earn All-ACC recognition as Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc was unanimously voted first-team All-ACC for singles and Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif earned third-team all-conference honors for doubles, it was announced Monday.

Cornut-Chauvinc led Florida State with 16 dual wins this spring while playing at No. 1. With 11 wins over nationally ranked opponents, Cornut-Chauvinc anchored Florida State's singles lineup and ascended as high as No. 2 in the national singles rankings, earning the highest singles ranking in program history.

Some highlights from Cornut-Chauvinc's record-setting season include a match-clinching victory in a 4-3 win over Miami and defeating the No. 1 overall player Ethan Quinn in straight sets in a 5-2 win over No. 7 Georgia.

Cornut-Chauvinc was recognized three times during the season, earning ACC Player of the Week and Doubles Pair of the Week on January 17 and being named the conference's Player of the Week again on January 31.

Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif led the Seminoles with doubles victories despite not making their first doubles appearance together until March 12th. The duo has a 10-2 doubles record this spring including a 3-0 record at No. 1.

The pair's late-season doubles dominance, finishing the season with six straight wins and a 9-1 record in their last 10 appearances, helped Florida State finish the season with seven wins in its last 10 matches. Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif's win streak included four ranked wins, including a 6-1 victory over the No. 13 doubles pair from North Carolina in the ACC Quarterfinal.

by Amanda Cover

DESTIN, Fla. - The Florida State men's tennis program excelled at the Destin Invite this weekend as Youcef Rihane claimed the individual championship. Rihane competed alongside Josh Dous-Karpenschif who earned second place, Alex Bulte, and Maks Silagy.

"I thought Youcef did an outstanding job winning the tournament," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "I thought he really controlled points, and I was very pleased with how he closed out the match today in the second set not getting broken at all."

Rihane, the sophomore from Algiers, Algeria, was 5-1 overall on the weekend with a perfect 3-0 record in singles. Sunday's singles match against Middle Tennessee State's Pavel Motl determined the overall winner.

"It was an incredible weekend for everyone," Rihane shared. "I am very happy with how I played and fought this weekend to get this trophy."

The Seminoles were outstanding across the board this weekend, finishing 12-4 overall including a 5-1 doubles performance.

"I thought overall we had good performances from Josh, Alex, and Maks," Hultquist added. "I thought they did a great job representing us against some very good teams."

Dous-Karpenschif also recorded a 5-1 record this weekend, including a perfect 3-0 showing in doubles with Silagy.

Cornut-Chauvinc Shines at ITA All-American Championships.

October 7, 2022

by Amanda Cover

TULSA, Okla. - The Florida State men's tennis team competed at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa this week, led by Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc who advanced to the singles Round of 16.

"We showed that we have a lot of good players, and we showed that we're one of the better teams in the country," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "Having 10 ranked wins, beating some top seeds and people that are ranked high shows that we have made some good progress."

Cornut-Chauvinc, the 105th-ranked singles player in the preseason rankings, entered the tournament in the qualifying round where he won three straight matches, including victories over No. 75 Gavin Young from Michigan and No. 125 David Stevenson from Memphis.

In the first round of the main draw, Cornut-Chauvinc was paired up against the No. 2 seed in the tournament and No. 3 ranked player in the country, Cannon Kingsley from Ohio State. After dropping the first set, Cornut-Chauvinc won nine straight games from 3-4 to close out the second set and sweep the third.

Cornut-Chauvinc earned his fourth ranked win of the tournament and fifth overall against No. 79 Tyler Zink from Oklahoma State to advance to the Round of 16. He is the first Seminole since Lucas Poullain in 2017 to advance to the Round of 16 at the All-American Championships.

The Round of 16 matchup featured the 2022 preseason top newcomer, Ethan Quinn from Georgia, against the 2021 preseason top newcomer in Cornut-Chauvinc. The two battled in a close match, but Cornut-Chauvinc fell just short in three sets.

"Antoine showed why he's one of the best players in college tennis," Hultquist added. "I thought that he played better as the tournament went on. He lost in a very tough match. He beat the No. 2 seed and had multiple other ranked wins."

Florida State excelled as a program in this tournament. The Seminoles were one of only two programs to see two players advance from singles qualifying to the main draw. Florida State was one of five schools with three players competing in the singles main draw.

Collectively, Florida State finished 21-11 in singles and earned nine wins over ranked singles opponents. Youcef Rihane accounted for three of these as he advanced to the singles main draw after ranked wins over No. 55 Ryan Fishback from Virginia Tech and No. 104 Noah Berry from California Polytechnic. He then defeated No. 22 Filippo Moroni from Wake Forest in the main draw consolation round.

"I'm very pleased with Youcef," Hultquist mentioned. "He racked up four wins, three in qualifying and one in the main in consolation. It really shows that he's emerging. He's off to a good start and is upping his game from a year ago."

Loris Pourroy also earned a significant ranked win in the main draw consolation round against No. 11 Brian Cernoch from North Carolina. Alex Bulte secured a ranked win during qualifying over No. 45 Tim Zeitvogel from Pepperdine. During prequalifying, sophomore transfer Jamie Connel finished 4-0 to advance to the qualifying round.

"Any time you advance from one level draw to the next is a good accomplishment, and Jamie did that," Hultquist said. "I thought he got stronger and played well on the second day and dominated both opponents, then picked up a win in the qualifying consolation.

Cornut-Chauvinc Finishes Second at ITA Regionals.

October 24, 2022

by Amanda Cover

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida State men's tennis team hosted the ITA Southeast Regional Championships at Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center from October 20-24. Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc advanced to the singles final which qualified him for the ITA Fall Championships in November.

"We followed up the Tulsa event with having some more strong showings this week," head coach Dwayne Hutlquist said. "I'm pleased that Antoine will make it into the main draw at Fall Championships in San Diego. We're looking forward to him going out there to compete against the best 32 players in the country."

Cornut-Chauvinc continued his success in ITA tournaments this fall with his stellar performance at regionals. On his way to the finals, seventh-seeded Cornut-Chauvinc defeated the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Dan Martin from Miami, who is currently ranked 38th in the country.

His experience showed in difficult matches, including a first-set sweep of Jonah Braswell from Florida in the semifinals. After winning five straight matches, Cornut-Chauvinc fell in a tight match against ninth-seeded Blake Croyder from Georgia.

Sophomore Youcef Rihane also had an excellent showing at the regional tournament, advancing to the singles semifinals. Rihane beat two higher seeded opponents in Nate Bonetto from Florida (No. 4) and Teo Giusca from Georgia (No. 5). Both of these players are currently ranked in the ITA national rankings at No. 91 and No. 93, respectively.

Rihane demonstrated his ability to keep fighting in tough matches as he climbed back from 0-40 to win the game and eventually win the second set against Giusca.

"Youcef really showed that he's making some great strides and improving as a sophomore this year," Hultquist added.

Florida State was the only school with three players competing in the main draw singles quarterfinals. Andy Petrovic, the eighth seed in the tournament, earned three straight-set victories to reach the quarterfinals.

"If you look back through the draw, we were the only team to have two in the semifinals, only team to have three in the quarterfinals, and the only team to have four in the round of 16," Hultquist explained. "I thought as a team we played well and had some significant wins along the way."

Sophomore JB Bernard had a successful showing in the singles back draw, reaching the quarterfinals with wins over Gabriele Datei from Georgia State and Lucas Dini from Mercer.

In doubles, Cornut-Chauvinc and Josh Dous-Karpenschif teamed up for the first time this fall and advanced to the round of 16.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. and SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Florida State junior Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc advanced to the semifinals at the ITA Fall Championships and sophomore Jamie Connel won the Bedford Cup in action this weekend.

Cornut-Chauvinc won three matches at the ITA Fall Championships in San Diego and advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament. Cornut-Chauvinc has produced phenomenal results all fall, beating six ranked opponents on his way to a 13-3 record in singles with all three losses coming to the eventual champions of each tournament. Connel won the Bedford Cup with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Florida Atlantic's Kevin Huempfner in the final, completing a run through the bracket in which he only dropped one set in four matches. Connel opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 victory and followed that with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the quarterfinal round. The Edinburgh, Scotland, native earned a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win in the semifinal to advance to the championship match. He also teamed with redshirt sophomore John Bernard to win the doubles consolation bracket.

No. 16 Florida State Defeats No. 7 Georgia Again.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The 16th-ranked Florida State men's tennis team won its home opener and improved to 3-0 this season with a 5-2 victory over No. 7 Georgia on Sunday afternoon.

"Georgia has a great team," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "To beat them here is great for our program. This is two years in a row we've beaten them. We feel like we have a very good team, and we have a lot to prove here early in the year. We have lots of tough, high-ranked teams that we play but we did that by design. We're thrilled to get this win. It was awesome having a huge crowd out here today, and I think people will want to come back and watch more of that."

The Seminoles jumped out to a 1-0 lead by defeating both of Georgia's nationally-ranked doubles pairs to claim the initial point. Maks Silagy and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif earned the first win with a 6-3 decision over No. 55 Britton Johnston and Blake Croyder at the No. 2 position. Georgia then evened doubles with a 6-3 win at No. 3 to set up the deciding contest at No. 1. Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Barnaby Smith finished off an exciting, 7-6 (3) victory over the 19th-ranked doubles pair in America, Ethan Quinn and Trent Bryde, and gave FSU the early lead.

Cornut-Chauvinc, the nation's No. 12-ranked singles player, defeated Quinn, the country's No. 1 singles player, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 to extend Florida State's lead to 2-0. After Georgia claimed a straight-sets win at No. 2, FSU's lead grew to 3-1 when 53rd-ranked Jamie Connel defeated No. 21 Croyder 6-4, 7-6 (7) at No. 5.

"Georgia is one of the best teams in the country, so this was a big goal for us and we are excited for it," Cornut-Chauvinc said. "We all fought on the court. I'm pretty proud of the team. Last year, I was watching the guys and wanted to be on this court. It's so nice not only for me but for the team to clinch the doubles point with Barnaby and seeing all the guys around, then I had a really good match with Ethan so I'm pretty happy."

Georgia closed the gap to 3-2 with a win at No. 6 singles, but that was the final point for the Bulldogs. Youcef Rihane, the 24th-ranked singles player in the nation, earned a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 106 Bryde at No. 3 to clinch the team victory. Minutes later, Andreja Petrovic completed a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over 70th-ranked Teodor Giusca at No. 4 for the final margin of victory.

"It's always good to win at home, especially in our first match here in Tallahassee," Rihane said. "I'm very excited and looking forward to what's next."

Florida State defeated Georgia for the second time in as many contests. The Seminoles knocked the 11th-seed Bulldogs out of the NCAA Tournament with a 4-3 win in Athens in the second round last season. Sunday's match was the first time Georgia traveled to Tallahassee since 1975, and FSU improved to 11-7 all-time at home against the Bulldogs.

"I was really proud of Youcef; he was cramping a little bit in the third set but was able to finish it off," Hultquist said. "There were a lot of ups and downs and we kept plugging away. Jamie had match point earlier in the set and came back and won the tiebreaker after being down three. I was proud of how we competed and played together as a team."

No. 10 Florida State Earns 6-1 Win Over FAU.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The 10th-ranked Florida State men's tennis team earned a 6-1 victory over FAU on Saturday afternoon at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.

"I was pleased with how we came out in singles and took control in a bunch of sets," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "We won five first sets and continued that momentum. We only dropped one set in singles and won 12 of 13. I think FAU has a good team; they got a couple of good wins last weekend so this was another good win for us as we prepare for ITA Kickoff Weekend at Baylor next weekend. That's really going to ramp up our season, and next week we'll have the challenge of playing on back-to-back days."

Florida State improved to 4-0 this season after sweeping the Owls in singles. Junior Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc, the 12th-ranked singles player in the nation, gave FSU its first win with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over 112th-ranked Kevin Huempfner at No. 1. All four of Cornut-Chauvinc's singles wins this season have come against ranked opponents. Sophomore Jamie Connel, ranked 53rd nationally, gave Florida State the lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5, and junior Loris Pourroy quickly brought the Seminoles to the brink of victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2.

Junior Andreja Petrovic clinched the team win with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3. Sophomore Youcef Rihane, the 24th-ranked individual in the country, finished off his 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 4 to extend FSU's lead to 5-1. The final point came down to No. 6, where senior Barnaby Smith was completing a come-from-behind, three-set victory by a score of 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) for the final margin.

FAU earned its only point by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

"We came back really strong after losing doubles," Hultquist said. "FAU really dominated our region in doubles during the fall. They won the region and had another doubles team make the semifinals. They play really strong doubles, and they got the doubles point."

Florida State Defeats South Alabama, 5-2.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 15 Florida State men's tennis team defeated South Alabama with a 5-2 win on Friday afternoon at the FSU Indoor Tennis Center.

"I thought we got stronger as the match went on," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "I thought we had a good chance to win the doubles point but ended up losing on a deuce point. We got three first sets. To me that was the time in the match where we got stronger. South Alabama played us tough, they are a strong indoor team."

Florida State rallied after being down 1-0, with Youcef Rihane's dominant 6-1, 6-2 win at Court No. 3 tying the match. Rihane is ranked 38th in the nation in singles play and has six wins on the season.

No. 3-ranked Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc remains undefeated on the season at Court No. 1 after his 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sebastien Collard put the Seminoles in the lead. Cornut-Chauvinc is now 7-0, with five of those wins coming against ranked opponents.

Joshua Dous-Karpenschif battled back for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win on court No. 1 to give FSU a 3-1 lead. The Seminoles continued to fight, with two courts requiring third sets to be played.

With Florida State leading South Alabama 3-1, Florida State only needed one victory to clinch the match. Louis Pourroy came back from a 4-1 deficit in his second set, winning the set 7-6 after winning 7-5 in the tiebreaker, to clinch the match for the Noles.

Alex Bulte finished the night for the Seminoles, after a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6 gave Florida State the final point of the afternoon. After losing the first set, Bulte found himself down 5-4 in the second set and facing match point before he won three straight games to win the second set and went on to win the third set 6-3.

"I'm really happy for Alex Bulte, getting in the lineup" Hultquist said. "He was down a set at the break, and then came back. It was a great effort on Alex's part, I'm really proud of him. It would be easy to hang your head, the other guy was playing really well, and Alex stepped up and made his shots. He won 6-3 in the third, and even the games he didn't win were deuce games and he battled and didn't hold back at all."

South Alabama won the doubles point after winning 6-4 on Court No. 3 and 7-5 on Court No. 1. Florida State won 6-2 on Court No. 2.

"It was a good battle and we got to get ready for Sunday" Hultquist said. "Sunday is a big match, SEC versus ACC, so we have to go get ready and I'm ready to have a good crowd out there."

No. 15 Florida State loses close contest to No. 24 Mississippi State, 4-3.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 15 Florida State men's tennis team fell to No. 24 Mississippi State 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.

Mississippi State jumped out to an early lead after winning the doubles point and getting victories on Courts No. 2 and No. 3, requiring Florida State to obtain victories on all four remaining courts to win the match.

"We did a good job battling back in doubles and getting an opportunity to win, but when we didn't get the doubles point, Mississippi State did a good job getting up on three of the courts" head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "We got up on three of the courts, but ended up playing from behind all day. Certainly, the match could've been very different, we had match point on Court 6, and if we get that it's three all playing for the match."

No. 71-ranked Jamie Connel earned the Noles first point of the afternoon after his 6-2, 7-5 win in straight sets on Court No. 5. Connel won three straight games after being down 5-4 in the second set.

Youcef Rihane, ranked 38th in the nation, defeated Ewen Lumsden 6-4, 7-6 (6) in straight sets. Rihane's victory on Court No. 4 was his seventh win of the season.

No. 3-ranked Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc remains undefeated on the season at Court No. 1 after his 6-1, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (7) victory over Nemanja Malesevic earned Florida State its third point in the match. Cornut-Chauvinc is now 8-0, with five of those wins coming against ranked opponents.

After Mississippi State won the first doubles match 6-3 on Court No. 2, Florida State struck back after Alex Bulte and Loris Pourroy came back from a 3-2 deficit, securing a 6-4 win on Court 3. The doubles point came down to Court 1, but Cornut-Chauvinc and Rihane's rally fell short as Mississippi State clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win.

"Mississippi State is one of the better teams in the SEC" Hultquist said. "They're a very strong team but we put ourselves behind. We were down match points in the doubles, and we staved off five match points to win that and battled back. We got a good effort from third doubles, and we just need to be a little more consistent in our doubles play. We had several guys have good matches today, we just needed to get the fourth point."

"It was a very hard-fought match; not often do you have a match where all six games go to a third set," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "It was important how we played doubles. They are a very good doubles team and for us to get the doubles point was very critical. They are a top-25 team and will be even better later in the year."

"After Antoine lost the first set, and bounced back to clinch the match, Youcef loses first set, and also was at match point to clinch, those guys coming from behind and battling was really key," Hultquist said. "We showed a lot of toughness, gained momentum from the second rain delay and pulled away to get the win. Everyone in the ACC is tough and we've got to get ready for Notre Dame on Sunday."

"It was a really good college match; I thought that getting a 4-0 win was excellent for us," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "Doubles were split one apiece and the last court was tied at four before Loris Pourroy and Andreja Petrovic stepped up and got us the doubles point which was a great start against a quality opponent."

Florida State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after it won the doubles point.

Maks Silagy and Barnaby Smith's 6-2 victory gave FSU its first doubles win after their win on court No. 3. Petrovic and Pourroy then clinched the doubles point for the Seminoles with a 6-4 victory at No. 2.

The match was clinched on court No. 5 by Petrovic in a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 come-from-behind victory, giving the Seminoles a 4-0 win.

No. 18 Florida State Falls To South Carolina In Second Round Of The NCAA Tournament, 4-1.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The No. 18 Florida State men's tennis team fell to No. 8 South Carolina 4-1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Carolina Tennis Center.

"I thought it was a really hard-fought match with a lot of momentum swings," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "I felt like the rain delay in doubles helped South Carolina and they came out playing better after it. We were up a break and had serve and had opportunities to break after that and South Carolina played very well there to take the doubles."

"We had a very tough draw up here, especially given where we were ranked," said Hultquist. "We've done a lot of really good things this season and had a number of great wins. I'm really proud of our guys but disappointed to see the season end."

South Carolina secured the doubles point and a 1-0 lead after winning on court No. 2 and court No. 3.

The Gamecocks extended the lead to 2-0 after a 6-1, 6-1 win on court No. 1.

Florida State continued to fight, winning four first sets including winning three tiebreakers on courts No. 2, No. 3 and on No. 6.

Joshua Dous-Karpenschif put the Seminoles on the board making it 2-1 behind a 6-4, 6-4 straight-set win on court No. 4. This was Dous-Karpenschif's second victory over a ranked opponent this season.

With all remaining courts in third sets, the Gamecocks took a 3-1 lead after a victory on court No. 5.

The match was clinched by South Carolina after a 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2.

When the match was clinched Youcef Rihane led 5-4 in the third set on court No. 3 and Jamie Connel was winning 2-1 on court No. 6.

"I am pleased at how hard we fought in first sets," Hultquist said. "We were down two sets and ended up winning four first sets, three of them at the same time. That put us in a good position heading into the key part of the match where South Carolina got early leads in the second sets and took these matches to three sets."

Florida State finishes with a 20-9 record on the season. Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc is the No. 7 seed in the NCAA Singles Tournament, which begins May 22 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando. Cornut-Chauvinc and Dous-Karpenschif are the No. 2 alternate in the NCAA Doubles Tournament.
